Your Sugar report. Here it is, a REC Radio Letter from home brought to you by youy Sugar from Home, a girl whose film portrayals run the gamut from light comedy to serious drama. One of Hollywood's Most popular actresses, Ms. Brenda Marshall.
Brenda Marshall
Hello and thanks for inviting me. From all reports, I hear this is one of the more pleasant radio chores, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this week with you. I'll try to include the same kind of items in this radio letter so that you'll be kept up to date on the news of music and musicians, news or radio and the radio personalities here at home and the latest on Broadway in the stage shows. Our special feature page for today has already been prepared and it will concern the hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The music, just as it always is, will be the most recent performances of the top entertainers in the country. And right down that groove, here's something made especially for this program by Tony Pastor, who's now playing here in Hollywood at the Palladium. It's Tony Pastor and his band playing Dancing room Only. What's happening on Broadway? Well, let's take a look. Sonya Haney, looking very cute in her GI Uniform, spent the other night bidding farewell to her many Broadway pals before embarking on her overseas tour. Ida Lapino, the star did a good deal to glamorize the box seat section of the Yankee Stadium the other day. And what's more, she threw figure worries to the wind and watched the game over lots of hot dogs and pop bottles. Mae west is leaving the main stem and is heading for the West Coast. Nat Moss, owner of one of Broadway's bigger night spots, just gifted Benny Goodman, the bandleader with a solid gold baton for his birthday. Joey Adams, doing the show at the Capitol, was flabbergasted and terribly pleased to see a tremendous line in front of the theater at 8am the morning he opened. But he had a rude awakening. The customers were all faced the other way towards Schultes cigar store on the corner. Dolores del Rio, headliner for many years, is leaving Broadway and heading for Mexico. Al Jolson, just arrived in town, spent most of the other night showing his new bride to Broadwayites. Kathleen Windsor, the lovely gal who wrote the bestseller Forever. Amber is back in town and working on another novel. Between working and worrying about two new theatrical ventures, Billy Rose, the producer, managed to put in a couple of hours the other night, whipping up his new Diamond Horseshoe show. It will be labeled Toast of the Town and feature the popular Anne Pennington and Helen Kane, former screen star. The big news on Broadway is that Derbingle Crosby is due in town shortly. Jimmy Dorsey has left his band to play out its engagement and departed for Hollywood for a long rest. It's a rare day when Caesar and Napoleon have lunch together on Broadway, but it happened the other day. Songwriter Irving Caesar was enjoying a sandwich and some coffee with Napoleon Reyes, third star baseman of the New York Giants. Barney Ross, the former champ will make New York his permanent residence. Phil Brito, the singer, just returned to Broadway from Ohio. He was invited to attend the sixth annual banquet of the Ohio Phonograph Owners association, who incidentally voted him as the most up and coming male vocalist in the country. Hildegard, the ever popular satirist, is going into a new show which will also feature singer Perry Como and Ted Steele in his orchestra. Memphis Bound, a new Broadway extravaganza, opened with the usual fanfare and flourish. Bill Robinson, the dancer, is the star, but even so, the show wasn't too well received. French Oton, the Hollywood star, who's been appearing on Broadway for a few seasons, is finally locking up shop and heading for the coast. Gracie Fields, the star, is leaving Broadway for a trip to New Zealand, India and Manila. And now, also from Manhattan, we have one of those special musical items. It's one of the newest recorded items by Lena Horn and the film Moore 4. This was recorded in New York, but the records themselves have not yet been released. So this is just for you. Lena Horne and Phil Moore singing How long has this been going on?
Lena Horne
I could cry salty tears where have I been all these years? Little one, tell me now how long has this been going on? There were chills up my spine and some thrills I can't define Listen sweet I repeat how long has this been going on? Oh, I feel like I could melt into heaven I'm hurled I know how Columbus felt Finding another world so kiss me once and then once more what a dance as I was before what a break for heaven's sake how long has this been going on? Oh, I feel just like I could melt up into heaven I'm heard I know how Columbus felt Finding another word Kiss me once and then once more what a dance I was before for what a break for heaven's sake. How long has this been going on? How long has this been going on?
Brenda Marshall
That very latest song sung by Lena Horne and Phil Moore. Now let's see what else is new in the music world. Corporal Van Horne, will you take a look for us?
Corporal Van Horne
I sure will, Brenda. Early this month, throughout the country, Glenn Miller Day was observed. Motion picture theaters everywhere commemorated the musical and morale contributions of the late Major Miller. At the Paramount Theater in New York, Glenn Miller Day was one of the greatest events ever promoted to sell war bonds. Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Cab Calloway and many others participated in a concert. Admission was secured only by the purchase of war bonds, and the price was from $25 to 10,000. Gene Krupa has asked his draft board's permission to take his band overseas. The matter has been taken under advisement. Krupa, who is 36 and up until recently 1A, has for a long time been wanting to take his aggregation across. The final word should be given within two weeks. The charioteers who are heard on Crosby's program these days have just cut a record. And who is the leading vocalist? Why, Frankie Sinatra. Johnny Scat Davis is now rehearsing a new crew. He's been working as a single since the draft cut up his old band. Jane Harvey, the former vocalist for Benny Goodman, has left BG to do singles and recording work. Francis Wayne, who you will remember having done such a great job on that old Black Magic, has hit it again with a new tune, Happiness Is a Thing Called Jo. She is consistently a top performer, but every once in a while a piperoo comes along that really puts them in the aisles. It's been said that there's a Sigmund Romberg tune being played somewhere in the world every minute of the day. Since he wrote his first song to win a $25 bet, Romberg has composed about 3,000 songs and made a fortune. Singer Jane Froman is just learning to walk again after months in a wheelchair as a result of a clipper crash at Lisbon, Portugal, two years ago, which cut short an overseas entertainment tour. Now Jane is taking shots in preparation for another try at entertaining the men abroad. And singer Martha Stewart, who left the band business and has started out on her own as a vocalist, is really turning out some fine tunes. Here's a great old ballad to her very latest, Martha Stewart singing She's Funny that Way.
