Where are these, like, toxins hidden? How are we getting them in our bodies?
Catherine
They're in everything from your face creams to your toothpaste deodorant that interfere with our natural biology.
Sahara Rose
Fertility. That is something a lot of women are struggling with right now. What do you feel this could be related to?
Catherine
The brain has the most mitochondria in their cells. The second highest concentration of mitochondria are women's eggs. It takes a lot of energy to think and it takes a lot of energy to make a baby. The trouble with a lot of supplements is they're inorganic and you get into a toxicity situation.
Sahara Rose
It's funny because I never take supplements, but I was thinking yesterday I should get some.
Catherine
No, don't take spirulina chlorella instead. I've been taking spirulina and chlorella every day for 17 years.
Sahara Rose
Do you not take any other supplement?
Catherine
No other supplements.
Sahara Rose
What's the difference between spirulina?
Catherine
They're very different. They're essential, but for different reasons.
Sahara Rose
Welcome back to the Highest Self podcast. My name is Sahara Rose and on this podcast I love to talk about spirituality, but make it modern, fun, grounded and relatable so it can actually serve your needs. So I have had a glow up over the past few years and a lot of you guys have been asking me questions on how. And it wasn't from Botox, it wasn't from fillers, it wasn't from peptides or whatever they're trying to sell you these days. It was from connecting to earth in a deeper way. And that's the shit they don't want to tell you that's really going to make all the difference. I'm talking about nature, sunlight, plant based foods, superfoods, fruits, vegetables, good energy, samba music, cute Brazilian boys. I'm talking about the beautiful things in life. And you know, when we can connect to the things that have always healed us intergenerationally, when we can go back to the way our ancestors used to live and eat more of those foods. And you know, I'm such a water baby. I love, you know, I'm, I'm a mermaid. And so I've loved seaweed, chlorella, spirulina, things like that. I've been taking it for a really long time. I lived in India more than 10 years ago and I remember in Auroville they were making this spirulina and I remember I got this, this giant bag of it and it was huge, like it was like multiple kilos. That was like the Minimum you had to get because they were like wild harvesting it. And I would just eat it with my hands, like I was just eating. And it tasted really good. It kind of tasted like Parmesan cheese, I would say. And then I would just add it on everything. And that's just how I live my life. So I was so excited to meet Catherine because she literally created a company that is all about pure spirulina and chlorella. But deeper than that, it's about how we can naturally cleanse ourselves from the toxins and the things that we are always, you know, being exposed to in society and how this is actually related to our deeper spiritual selves. Because a globe comes from within. You know, it comes from being in touch with your true self. And when we feel better, we look better. And some of these superfoods actually create a psychic shift in our, in our way of being. They change how we feel, how we speak, how we show up in the world. And I was really excited because I know lots of us are green witches and you know, we love learning about all the plants and the herbs and things like that. And you know, I was just on in this island in Brazil called Floripa, which is island of the witches. It's where the witches escaped from Portugal. And so like the, the plant life there was so active. And it's something that I want to continue to bring in my life here and to share with you guys of how we can not just heal, but glow with nature. And before we get started with this episode, I saw that over 50% of you guys are not yet subscribed to the podcast, which, don't worry about it. I'm not offended, but I'd love to keep hanging out. I'm having a good time with you, so just subscribe to it wherever you're listening to this on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts. It helps me reach more people, reach you with our upcoming episodes and get this message out into the world. So be sure to hit subscribe. And now let's get into the episode. So without further ado, let's welcome Katherine Algae Spirulina, Plant based expert detox expert here on the Highest self podcast.
Catherine
Welcome. Thank you so much, Sahara. Yes. I'm so glad that the world is starting to, including myself, learn more about plant based nutrition. Because it's our gift from mother Nature, Mother Nature, God, the universe, it's really all the same energy.
Sahara Rose
So how did you come across these especially like spirulina, chlorella, these different kinds of algaes?
Catherine
I Was led to it. It was certainly not on my radar. And just to give you a little bit of background, I'm Canadian by birth, but have lived in Boston, Massachusetts for 37 years. Recently moved to Miami so I could be warm. But I mentioned the Canada part because I haven't had an MBA and was doing international business. And I have two sisters who are both in Canada I'm very close to. And my younger sister, out of the blue 18 years ago developed breast cancer. She's fine now, but her oncologist in Canada told her as she was preparing for chemo, she needed to change her diet to an alkaline diet because it would help with her healing. Didn't tell her what it was or why she needed to change it, what it would do. So the first, first call she made was to me, I knew nothing. But I'm a good researcher and I love my sister. So I said, I will find out. Turned out to be a plant based diet because the chlorophyll and the phytonutrients that build your immune system. And she was going through chemo. She said she wanted to have a strong immune system. But then I also learned that from research. There was a German scientist from the 40s who discovered that cancer could not exist in cells that were alkaline. So I have to believe that that was part of the reason. So nobody was talking about it then I felt compell do something about it. It was not in my background, but I was drawn to it, I was led to it. So then I enrolled myself into a school called the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I got a health coaching certificate. I taught plant based nutrition for a year. Hospitals, companies. And this is what truly led me to algae. Because I was teaching people the importance of eating more plants, more vegetables. But people complaining, they didn't like them, it was too much work, it gave them gas, their children wouldn't eat them. So I thought I need to find something that gets them the nutrition of plants into people without any work, without any flavor, without any gas. It didn't go bad. And bottom line is, ultimately I went back and found algae because it was one of the things I'd found for my sister. Spirulina and chlorella particularly, because these were two foods. First life on earth. In fact, I told you when I came in, spirulina is actually a bacteria. It's called a cyanobacteria and it's documented as the first life on Earth. Almost 4 billion. You can only be the first life on Earth once. So I call spirulina spiritualina. So I was led to this by helping my sister, realizing I could help more people. And then I literally had a download one day that said, you are going to bring algae to the world. Algae that had been here for 4 billion years. It's an agricultural crop. It is not a supplement. It's a whole food. It's grown in Asia. 99% of algae is grown in Asia, used in Asia. People outside of Asia know about it. So my mission was and is to educate people about algae, what it does for you, why you desperately need it, women in particular. And then I had to create a company that grew a safe, pure form of it, because I can't just educate you about something that's important and then send you off to the wild and let somebody sell you something that's full of toxins and doesn't work. So I formed Energy Bits as the company to grow very safe, pure spirulina and chlorella algae tablets. And so that's what I do.
Sahara Rose
I love it. So something that I learned from your writing is that spirulina helps build and chlorella helps detox. Can you share a little about, like, because I feel like we categorize as the same thing. What's the difference between spirulina?
Catherine
They're very different. So spirulina nutrition in morning, afternoon, for sure. Chlorella is a wellness algae. So we called ours recovery bits. So you can recover from your day, recover from toxins, recover from alcohol, recover from sports. And it does it by has a hard cell wall that attaches to heavy metals. Glyphosate pesticide, highest chlorophyll in the world, which kills bacteria. And then it also builds your immune system. And as I mentioned, this is brain health, but this is very much a gut health issue. So this is very much a gut health elimination detoxing algae. And it works in partnership with spirulina, which is nourishing in and a brain algae. And they're connected by something called the vagus nerve. So as you heal one, you certainly help the other. And vice ve they're essential, but for different reasons.
Sahara Rose
So I want to talk about toxins. I feel like we are exposed to things. So I noticed that in Brazil, I was eating so much more and I was losing weight, and the only thing I could think of were the toxins in the food in the United States that were causing me to gain weight. And so I'm curious, like, where are these, like, toxins hidden in Our food supply, oils. Like, how are we getting them in our bodies?
Catherine
Well, I'm writing a book right now, and there's a whole chapter on toxicity and what's happened in the environment. And there's something like 100,000 chemicals have been released into our world since World War II. And originally, these toxins, they were actually chemicals that were put into food was to extend shelf life because after the war, there was a baby boom and there was a need for food. And so they wanted to make it easy. So the toxins are in are chemicals that interfere with our natural biology. And they're in everything from your face creams to your dental, your toothpaste, your deodorant rent, your clothing, carpeting, the air, whether it's from car fumes or fires. And you can't live in a bubble. You want to live happily, but you also need to live defensively. And the way to do that is with things that are natural, like chlorella. We were talking earlier about people on GLP1, and they're losing weight, but they're not happy. Well, with the losing weight thing. Our bodies naturally store toxins in our fat because, you know, fat doesn't do a whole lot. It stores them in other places, but it's. It definitely stores them in our fat. So if you're losing weight, the body goes, well, I guess, you know, you get rid of the fat and then all those toxins are released. And what happens with toxins I used to live in, as I mentioned, in Boston, and in the wintertime, people are very protective of their parking spots because snow blocks everything. So if somebody's in your parking spot, you can't park your car. Think of toxins as taking up your parking spot on your cell, which has a lipid cell. They have these things called cell receptors that allow certain nutrients to get in through those receptors. Think of, like them as windows that open and close. But if there's a toxin sitting in your cell receptor, it's like someone stole your parking spot. And so chlorella is like the tow truck or the police force that pulls the toxin out. So now the nutrition can get in. So you need to get rid of the toxins, because even if you put in good nutrition, a lot of it can't get in because something is blocking it and nothing works properly. Your cells won't communicate properly, Your digestion won't work properly. Some toxins are actually even natural. There's lectins and oxalates that are found in certain plants. And these are sharp proteins that can puncture your stomach lining.
Sahara Rose
Like raw tomatoes, right?
Catherine
Rot tomatoes, spinach, kale spinach, or any, I think any kind of spinach, sadly. So you need to be very careful of those. Some people are sensitive, but then gets into your bloodstream and can trigger autoimmune. You know, in sports, they have what's called a playbook that shows how to do a play on the field. And I just want people to have their own playbook in the game of life. And for me, it's like a recipe. I don't cook very much. I have two sisters that I mentioned, and they're excellent cooks. So they don't even need a recipe. I need a recipe if I'm going to cook something. So I go, I get my recipe and I get everything that's needed in the recipe. And then when I cook it turns out pretty well. We just want everyone to have a recipe. Once you know what you need to help your body function properly, get back to homeostasis. Everything else starts flowing better. There's less static from the toxins, the nutrition can get in where it needs to go. And you can have a better, more richer, energized life. And you'll sleep better, you'll poop better, you'll think better.
Sahara Rose
So you mentioned autoimmune, and I feel this is a huge thing so many people are struggling with. And I want to talk about. They say that a lot of women who have a hard time sharing their voice, you know, being a bitch, often it manifests as autoimmune. Have you seen that? Like, what do you feel that this huge rise in autoimmune is related to?
Catherine
I think there's so much noise in our world about what we should do. We're like a ping pong ball. Your mother wants you to do this, your friends want you to do that, society wants you to do that. And. And we're not listening to our own voice. And anytime there's strain, whether it's pulling a rope or straining a muscle and you do it too much, there's going to be a problem. It's going to manifest somewhere. And so I came on my journey because against all odds, I had no nutrition background, no money, no nothing. It made zero sense. But the voice inside me said, you need to do this. You can do this. I felt at peace. I felt joy, and I felt at peace. And so I thought, I know this doesn't make any sense to anybody else. It doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm going to do it. I'm Going to see where it takes me. And so for autoimmune, literally for anything, I would just encourage people. And it has nothing to do with allergy, to quiet your mind, quiet the noise, and just listen to. To yourself, sit with yourself and not apologize for what it tells you. Maybe it tells you need more sleep. Maybe it tells you need to move to another city. It told me that that's why I moved to Miami. Maybe it tells you you need different friends, a different diet. People won't listen to it. Because the thing is, often you have to make change. And, you know, when we were younger, change didn't scare us. We have to start embracing change as something positive. As adults, we think of change as something. And, you know when you see a child learning how to ride a bicycle and they keep falling off and falling off, do they ever give up? No, because they want it, and they're not afraid of what's going to happen. Falling off the bike. I know because I felt it myself. At a certain age, we do not embrace change. We do not embrace the unknown. And that's because we assume it's going to be negative and it was going to hurt us. Maybe we could just flip the script and assume maybe there's something better on the other side. And maybe algae seems really weird to you. You think of it as pond scum. I did, too. But the more I learned about it and the science and the international endorsements by NASA, the United Nations, I kept lifting the hood and exploring, and I found out that there was a world there that nobody outside of Asia knows about. But I'm just using that as an example. Never would I have ever thought I would make algae. My, my, my. And I'm so happy and so at peace, and this is my path. And I just wish the same for everybody else.
Sahara Rose
Yeah, I feel when we take that time away from the noise, we can just receive these downloads that were, like, right in our periphery, but we just couldn't hear it. And it can radically shift the course of your entire life. And you're like, wow, had I not taken that walk without, you know, texting the whole time or whatever that thing was, I wouldn't have had this whole new iteration. And, Dharma, you know, your North Star is. Is your soul's purpose. And I feel even the autoimmune and that it's. When we listen to ourselves, I think a lot of, like, our own body's inner guidance will say, this is what you need to heal. You need you maybe spend more time in the sun or go to A river or whatever the thing is. But we're just looking for an authority, a doctor or someone to tell us what to do. And what we've seen is sometimes the things that they're telling us to do, then later they're like, actually it wasn't safe to do that because you can't outsmart Mother Nature.
Catherine
You can't, and you don't want to. You don't want to. This is where our ego gets in the way. We think we know better. No, we don't. I love yoga. And some of the poses are very. They bring you to Earth so that you can say, you know, I know I don't know better. Guide me. There's, I think we're so proud, and I used to be too, that I can do this myself. No, I can't. And I don't want to. I would rather be guided. And so I am just a channel. I am just a vessel bringing the knowledge that I have accrued from my few 14 years of studying algae. Mother Nature studied it for 4 billion years. And when you see that you're just a vessel and just a channel, and that your soul is. And your intent is pure, then you stop being afraid. Because there are no mistakes when you are doing it that way. When we're striving for perfection because we might not be accepted, that means we, we don't believe we're perfect. We are all perfect at all times. And there's no judgment. The only judgment that counts is your own. But if you don't love yourself, here's the great thing. When you love yourself, you need nothing else. Everything else is a bonus because you don't need it. You might like it, but you don't need it. And that takes the pressure off every experience and every person. And so then you start giving yourself over to the natural things that surround you, whether it's earth or plant based medicine or things like algae. I like to tell people, you know, everyone loves a smile. Smiling at people is free. It's effortless. They feel better and you feel better. And I came up with this analogy. Algae is like giving your body a smile from the inside. It's. It's effortless, it's not completely free, but it's very affordable. And it just makes you feel better. And then you want to tell other people about it. But we have to be open to these things. Because I know nobody here in America grew up with algae, so they think it's weird. I did too, but there's a lot of things that you didn't grow up with, like, spirituality, maybe that is not weird. It's just that you don't know about it. So it's not new, it's just new to you?
Sahara Rose
Absolutely. What are some other things your sister did to help heal her cancer?
Catherine
Well, she's more conventional. So, I mean, she followed her oncologist's advice. She did change her diet, so she eliminated all the acidic foods and she still does. And she's 16 years cancer free. So that's what triggered my destiny. And it was so funny because here I thought I was helping her. And ironically, this is what, in retrospect, she was helping me because the universe knew exactly that I would jump in and it guided me to the this. And I used to argue with the universe when I first started this, like, find somebody else with science background. Because there's a lot of science in what this stuff does. There's 100,000 studies documenting what spirulina and chlorella do. But the trouble is, and the science has been around for decades, scientists don't know how to talk to consumers. Scientists are rewarded for writing papers because the papers either get them tenure or bonuses. They are not rewarded for talking to humans. So all of this rich science has been around for decades, but nobody has been able to explain it to us mere mortals. I'm a great communicator. I always have been. And I taught myself the science. So there's a gap, and I'm filling the gap between the science and you. I'm not doing this to make myself feel important. I am here on a mission because we are in a nutritional crisis, a health crisis, a spiritual crisis, environmental crisis, and strangely, as it sounds, algae will save will contribute a large part of the solution. But somebody has to explain it and help people understand why they need it, how to use it and what it does. So that's what I do.
Sahara Rose
And in terms of healthy lifestyle, what are some lifestyle shifts we can make to just, you know, we were talking about being in the sun. More like, what are some other things that you do?
Catherine
Give yourself a couple hours, a day of just slowness. It could be sitting. It could be sitting outside looking at art, looking at leaves. A droplet on a leaf is magical. Just examine the petal of a flower, look at the clouds drifting by, Anything that will bring you to the present, because that's all you have. And when you enjoy the present and feel the energy from the present and your presence in the present, that will bring you more moments like that. And then you will learn to put boundaries around yourself because you remembered how wonderful it felt to be present. And so when you get all that noise telling you to rush and do this and make decisions and take that and buy that, you'll have more jurisdiction over yourself to say either no or not now. I tell my team sometimes they want something. I say, it's not a no, it's just a not now. So I just want people to take back their power. And you can only do it by being in the presence. And you are giving yourself a present by being present, right?
Sahara Rose
Absolutely.
Catherine
Sleep is my other number too, for sure. You should never apologize for asking for more sleep. It's restorative. That's when your body gets restorative of toxins. That's when you do repair. And if you can't get into a deep sleep, you can't repair. If you don't get a deep sleep, you're not. You're going to be hungry. Your leptin triggers are going to be off melatonin. So it helps you get into a deep sleep. And that's also a precursor to serotonin, which is the happy mood neurotransmitter that's made in your. In your gut. So sleep is so restorative. Your. Your skin will be better. You won't be triggered by foods, by sugar, by anger, by the noise. You'll be able to stay present longer by sleeping longer.
Sahara Rose
Yes. Yesterday I was feeling so jet lag after Brazil, and I'm like, oh, my God, when I am tired, I can't even think. I can't function. It's hard to do anything. And yeah, then I was just kept eating, you know, because your body's like trying to stay awake and I'm just like eating all these things I'm not even hungry for, and it makes such a difference. And then I actually had some of the spirulina and it felt like this energy shot. And it was quite different than other spirulinas I've had before, where you don't really feel anything, you know, And I was like, oh, wow. This is actually what pure spirulina feels like, because it feels like. Like a stimulant kind of. And it went super fast. But I noticed the energetic shift the
Catherine
way I describe people when they take spirulina. And you need at least 15, really at a time. 30 is better for therapeutic purposes. But the way you feel is. Is fresh. That's it. You just feel alert. It's not like a stimulant. Like there's no rush or crash you just feel alert and who doesn't want to feel alert? And, and so that's why generally you take it in the morning or the afternoon.
Sahara Rose
For example, I was looking at these protein bars today and there was this protein bar that had like very high protein, low calories, but it had, you know, all these sugar alcohols in it, all these different things in it. And then there was like another one that had just died dates and maybe like eggs or something else. Less ingredients, but it had more calories and less protein. I was like, I don't know what to choose, you know, and it's very confusing. And I do feel probably why I felt so good in Brazil was because I was eating more. Just simple one ingredient things. That was like beyond the macros. My body could just recognize it. And when it comes to these different superfood powders, I did not know that the heat that they're using heat. How are they using heat to mix up a bunch?
Catherine
Well, there's so many ingredients, you have to, to put it together. Most supplements, your body doesn't absorb them because they're mostly made of synthetics and so your body can't recognize them and so they can't even absorb them. Somebody might be taking a multi and a C and an E and a bunch of different things. It's like listening to different soloists playing different instruments, different music in different rooms. And it's cacophony. It doesn't work. Algae or whole food, the nutrients all work together because they came intact with algae. And it's 40 vitamins and minerals, but there's also coenzymes and enzymes and factors and co factors. It's like listening to the symphony. When you put all those instruments together, the strings and the brass and the pianist and the soloist, you get this rich experience that you can't get from all the individual soloists. So algae is the symphony and it does everything collectively and gives you a richer experience. That's why you don't have to worry about how to take it with some supplements. You have to take it with fruits or citrus. Sometimes you have to take some with fats. You don't have to worry about any of that. Algae does all the heavy lifting for you. Mother Nature crafted this for us. Again, we just grow it and dry it so carefully to preserve what she came up with and make sure that it's toxin free and very concentrated. And we do third party lab tests here in the U.S. so do you
Sahara Rose
not take any other supplement?
Catherine
I have not been taking any other supplements. I don't Take any medications and in fact I'll share with you. I turned 77, 0 in a couple of months. In my age group, 80% of people have three medications and a couple of chronic diseases. I have none, I take none. So I'm a sample of one. I realize that, but I have been taking spirulina and chlorella every day for 17 years and no other supplements. I'm not suggesting that everyone throw all of their supplements away, but I would suggest getting rid of a fish oil. I would suggest getting rid of a multivitamin. I would suggest.
Sahara Rose
So is there fish oil in algae?
Catherine
No, but fish oil basically concentrated. Concentrated, the omega 3. And I tell people, well, where do you think the fish get the Omega 3 from? They get it from algae in the ocean. But fish oil very often goes rancid. So it's supposed to be anti inflammatory, but when it's rancid it's inflammatory. You know, there's not a lot of Omega 3 in Spirulina. There's really none in chlorella. But spirulina has other essential fatty acids as well. And you can, you can still take, try to get another other form of omega 3, maybe a plant based form if you want to still take an Omega 3.
Sahara Rose
But so you wouldn't recommend fish oil. You would do like flaxseed oil or something.
Catherine
Yeah. Or you may not need it at all. So no, I haven't been taking any other supplements except when I travel I take vitamin C and magnesium because there's no vitamin C in the spirulina and magnesium really helps. Just with so many enzymatic activities including bowel movements. And when you're traveling, things are off. By the way, wait. If anyone has constipation, chlorella is the best way to do that because it tryptophan is the precursor to serotonin and serotonin stimulates bowel movements. It's all scientifically, it's called motility. So chlorella is really great for improving bowel movements. You don't take stool softeners or any of that stuff. This is the natural way. And if you want to take it one step up, I have another great tip for you. Also a food, fresh pineapple. The bromelain in fresh pineapple helps with digestion and with elimination. Those two will solve every single problem. If you have any kind of constipation, please don't go to the pharmacy and get any of those things on the shelves. Chlorella and fresh pineapple are your go tos.
Sahara Rose
And another thing I've noticed is I barely have any smell when I sweat.
Catherine
Yeah.
Sahara Rose
Because I've been, I've been taking spirulina for like more than 10 years, every day as well, and barely have any smell. But I notice if I eat something like with a little off, like it has like onions or just something different, like my. All of a sudden I'm like, wait, what? Like, this isn't me. Like it doesn't smell like me anymore. And so it's so fascinating because I know chlorella is amazing. Inner detoxifier.
Catherine
Yes.
Sahara Rose
And so, so many women are like, concerned with how they smell and are bouncing around from deodorant to deodorant trying to find the right one. But I feel if we just took spirulina and chlorella, we wouldn't have this.
Catherine
You wouldn't. I haven't used deodorant literally in, well, since I started the company. 15, 20 years. Chlorella, the chlorophyll kills bad bacteria. It kills it in your mouth, it kills it in your colon, it kills it anywhere. They used to use it during World War II on wounds. They would put liquid chlorophyll on wounds to help with the healing, stop with the smell. And it's been used for centuries for that, for that reason. So, yeah, get rid of the deodorant. Just take, make sure you're taking chlorella because the chlorophyll is what will kill the bacteria and it's this and that's what's causing the smell. What else can you eliminate? Probably a multivitamin. If you take the two of them, you won't need as much food because you're not going to be as hungry, especially with the spirulina. If you're on a GLP1, please take 30 of these a day to protect your muscles and to get all the proteins that you need. Even if you aren't on a GLP1, this will nourish your body way. United nations had a global conference on Spirulina 50 years ago and declared it the answer to world hunger. You can go online and find, find the conference paper because of the high protein and it's a sustainable, eco friendly crop, zero negative footprint.
Sahara Rose
So I recently saw this study that they found lead in almost all tampons.
Catherine
Oh, Jesus. Yeah, I'm not surprised.
Sahara Rose
Does this help clear with heavy metals?
Catherine
Oh, chlorella will pull aluminum, heavy met mercury. We work with biological dentists because they pull out those silver fillings. Guess what's Silver, it's mercury. And so that release, when you pull them out, you get mercury released. And when you're swallowing, you're going to get a little bit of mercury every single time. So yes, any kind of heavy metals, there's lead in our pipes, water, water pipes. Aluminum from any kind of vaccines, all have aluminum in them. There's aluminum everywhere.
Sahara Rose
Even like coffee pots are made of aluminum.
Catherine
Coffee pots, plastics, microplastics, which cause release toxins. This will pick up the toxins from the microplastics. I couldn't imagine living without chlorella because I don't want to withdraw from the world, but I need to protect myself. So it's like having a protective shield around yourself, except on the inside. The other thing thing is one of the things that another nutrient in both of them, but mostly chlorella, is vitamin K2, which removes excess calcium out of soft tissue and into your bones. Arteriosclerosis, which is hardening of the arteries is excess calcium. Calcium also calcifies your pineal gland. So for a spiritual person, you want. That's the connection to the higher universe. So we want to make sure that's clear. And also calcium causes wrinkles in your. You're. I mean ladies, we want to look great. And you can do that with the rich protein. Because your face is made of collagen, your skin is collagen and elastin. But you need to get rid of the excess calcium that can damage them and also damage your, your organs.
Sahara Rose
So excess calcium can cause wrinkles?
Catherine
Yes, because it damages your elastin. Elastin is like the scaffolding that holds up the collagen. The collagen is like the stuffing. The collagen, the, the elastin is like the scaffolding and it can damage the scaffolding just like free radicals can.
Sahara Rose
Wow, I had no idea.
Catherine
Also, even with skin we were talking about earlier, there's so much chlorophyll in here. They've studied chlorophyll and found that it will. It acts as a natural sun protector. So you can be in the sun, maybe not at high noon for three hours, but you won't get a burn. I don't, I have never used. This is the only thing I've never used used sun protector. I wear a hat all the time and I try not to be out at high noon, but I don't get burned.
Sahara Rose
I do the same thing. I just wear a hat. And sometimes if I like know I'm going to be like at the beach, I'll do a little spf. But I even ask my. It's like almost like I don't really know if it's doing anything or not. But I feel, and I've actually heard and anecdotally that when you're wearing a lot of spf, it can actually cause you to then burn because of the chemicals, something around that. And so it's this addictive loop that you're in of like, oh my God, I burned. I didn't do enough spf. And then you do more and then, you know.
Catherine
Yeah. And they're made from chemicals, so that's another layering of chemicals. It's just. We're in a chemical soup. The average adult In America has 700 chemicals in them. They're now testing placentas of newborns. They have almost 200 toxins in their bodies the day that they are born. So. So if you're 20 or 30 or 40, think about how many more toxins you've accumulated.
Sahara Rose
I think the microplastics is probably the biggest micro.
Catherine
And you know, I drink a lot of tea. Fortunately, most of my tea I make at home and I've always bought it with loose leaves and I use a mesh filter. But when I'm traveling, I have tea bags. Those tea bags are made of plastic.
Sahara Rose
Oh, yeah.
Catherine
The plastic is just crazy. And there's heat. Right. That's another tip. So if you're a tea drinker like me, try to use loose leaves, travel with them. I have my own little filter thing I travel with. And my bag of. I, I drink yerba mate a lot and also green tea, but I always make it loose where I can.
Sahara Rose
Do you drink coffee?
Catherine
I like the smell of it and I like the taste of it. But it's. It's so acidic. If. Unless it's a really good bean, then, then I. But I do enjoy it occasionally. Yeah, but I, I drink mostly green tea or. And some black tea occasionally.
Sahara Rose
And I want to talk about fertility because that is something a lot of women are struggling with right now. What do you feel this could be related to?
Catherine
We talked about stress and your body is so in tuned with you, it's not going to let you have a baby if you are really stressed out. The other thing is, I mentioned earlier, maybe it didn't. Your brain has the most mitochondria in their cells. That's why we consider spirulina brain food because it has an antioxidant that protects the mitochondria called superoxide dismutase. The brain has 2 million mitochondria per cell. So this really heals the brain. Brain. So depression, anxiety, anything to do with the brain, that's spirulina. The second highest concentration of mitochondria are women's eggs, the ocelites. And the third, by the way, is your heart. The highest concentration of mitochondria are where the greatest energy needs are. It takes a lot of energy to think, and it takes a lot of energy to make a baby. So if you are trying to have a baby, I would certainly spend more time being quiet and listening to your soul and trying to bring the noise and the stress level down. And I would absolutely add spirulina. You'd probably want 30 a day because you want to bring back the mitochondria health of your eggs. I would encourage your partner to take them as well, because they're also finding sperm. Men's sperm just don't have the juice in them anymore. They also also can't seem to make the trip to the eggs to fertilize. So the eggs is so critical. Just a little side note, you know, we all have our regular genes, and half of those genes, the DNA came from men and half came from women. The DNA in mitochondria all come from women. How cool is that? And it just reminds me that women are always working in the background. Mother Nature's working in the background. Your mitochondria came from. The DNA came from your mother. And women do so much without recognition, which can also cause some stress. But we want you and your eggs to be as nourished as possible. But you have to be. Your body needs to be nourished. Your mitochondria need to be healthy. You want to take as many of the stress triggers out of your life. And I really think that will probably help a lot. Lot.
Sahara Rose
What you just said about the amount, I definitely have not been taking enough.
Catherine
Oh, yes.
Sahara Rose
So how much spirulina and Carlos should we be taking every day?
Catherine
If you want to just get started, and we have them in large bags with a thousand tablets and we have a discount code. And if you took 10 a day, that would work out to about a dollar a day, which, with your code, which is pretty terrific. So you could start with 10 a day. We have little pouches that have 30 in them. But if you're trying to correct a condition, you want to prevent a condition, maybe you had cancer, are worried about cancer, or you want to lose weight, 30 would be the therapeutic amount. Now you don't have to take them all 30 at one time. You could take 10 in the morning, maybe have 10 at lunch. Everybody I know other than me has a slump of energy around 2 o'. Clock. You'll never get that slump with spirulina. So 10 or 15 would be a starter amount daily to have a really great experience. 30. But remember, when you're taking 30, you can eliminate about 5 of your other supplements and you won't need as much food because you're not. So your grocery bill will go down. Chlorella, similar sort of thing. 10 or 15 will give you the chlorophyll and the phytonutrients, the tryptophan. But for detox you need closer to the 30 tablets. Now, because your body goes through a detox repair cycle with when you're sleeping, we generally recommend this before bed. You can take it any time of day. I do, but I always take it before bed as well. So I call spirulina your nutritional insurance and I call chlorella your health insurance. They work completely differently, but they both will help you regain what you've lost or protect what you have. And that's what we want.
Sahara Rose
So powerful. So we have a Coupon code for 20% off, which is great. Coupon code Sahara on energybits.com and you can find that link in the show notes and super excited for people to give it a try.
Catherine
Particularly these are good for women going through perimenopause and menopause because as your estrogen levels drop, nobody's told you probably that estrogen is also acts as an antioxidant for your mitochondria and also it keeps your serotonin receptors active. So this is one of the reasons why women get depression and anxiety when they enter perimenopause and menopause. First of all, they're not having the protection for their mitochondria, which we can give you back with the superoxide dismutase. And also their serotonin receptors aren't working as well and they aren't having the protection of the estrogen. Both of those working again with the combination of the two. So don't suffer in silence when there are solutions that have been provided to us by Mother Nature. She's got your back. We just need you to learn about it and find a really clean, safe source to use.
Sahara Rose
And what I love about plants is you can take it and it will work on what you need. So maybe you don't know that you're low in a specific vitamin or nutrient or you're Dealing. And it's like the intelligence of that, like an adaptogen. It's adapting to you. And so I love that about plants because I think sometimes we try to be this, like, scientist of like, oh, I need this vitamin and these all these obscure things and you've never heard of them. And then it feels. Feels like, oh, me, I probably have that problem too. And it's like, just take a plant and we'll work on where it needs to work in your body. And it will probably shift over time.
Catherine
Yeah. And all these nutrients are what's called organic. So the trouble with a lot of supplements is they're inorganic. So a lot of iron supplements are literally iron shavings from a rock. And you can get into a toxicity situation that never happens.
Sahara Rose
So is there iron in there?
Catherine
Is some iron, but it's organic. It comes from a plant. So if you don't need it, your body will not absorb it.
Sahara Rose
Because I'm always low in iron. I think a lot of, like, younger women are, so I. It's funny because I never take iron supplements, but I was thinking yesterday I should get some.
Catherine
No, don't, please do not take iron supplements. Take spirulina chlorella instead. And iron is what carries oxygen in your hemoglobin, your red blood cells. So that's why you're fatigued. If you don't have enough iron, you're not able to hold enough oxygen in your blood, which means your cells aren't getting the respiration, aren't getting the oxygens they need to perform optimally. And also this just helps heal your blood because of the chlorophyll, which is. This is the same chemical composition of your blood. So both of them have chlorophyll in them. So we can give you back, give you the iron, give you the chlorophyll that will heal your hemoglobin so that you can carry more oxygen in the iron. And also the alkalinity protects the blood.
Sahara Rose

Sahara Rose
Well, thank you so much for all the research that you've done into it. I'm excited for it to support so many people with their health Yeah. I think it's just such a reminder that there is so much that we can do around our healing, and it's not around more chemicals, more drugs, more whatever the thing. And it's just coming back to nature. Like, you know, like, algae is the most natural thing that we see on every rock. You know, like, you go to waterfalls, it's the algae. You go to ponds, it's the algae. It's. It's everywhere. It's like, kind of like mushrooms. It's like one of those things. It's a. It's a fabric of life, and so. And the oldest. That's crazy.
