Joseph
We saw you from back there. We wanted to make sure you were okay.
Angel
It's my wife.
Mary
She is pregnant. It would be great news, except I'm not the father.
Gabriel
I was doing some chores around the house and I noticed something. That's when I saw him. You found favor with him, Mary.
Emily
What?
Gabriel
Favor with who? With God. He has chosen you for something incredible. You're going to have a son, and his name will be Jesus. God's spirit will come upon you and his power will make this possible. I don't understand any of this. But if this is what God wants, then I'll trust him. Whatever he needs, I'm his servant.
Emily
It's so hard to believe, you know? An angel, a miraculous child. It all sounds like a story. One that's too good to be true.
Gabriel
Faith doesn't remove the questions. It just gives us the courage to keep walking with them.
Azariah
I believe that in every journey the Almighty has a lesson for us, even in the smallest ones. Sometimes he calls us to search for others. And along the way, we discover he's leading us closer to himself. It'll be getting dark soon. And tonight feels different.
Shepherd
Different how?
Azariah
I don't know. You travelers, the lost sheep. It all feels like it means something more. I feel as though we're on the edge of something. Holy.
Joseph
Mary, are you all right? You look like you need some rest.
Mary
We're not far from a small well. When we reach it, we can refill our water and take a rest.
Emily
That would be nice.
Gabriel
Are you okay, Emily? You seem like a million miles away.
Emily
Yeah. Sorry. I guess I didn't realize how far we'd actually be. Walking gives you a lot of time to think.
Gabriel
Yeah.
Joseph
It's kind of amazing, isn't it? We're actually here, walking to Bethlehem. Like it's real.
Emily
Um.
Gabriel
You okay? Like really okay?
Emily
I'm alright. It's just this experience. It's hard not to think about how different everything is.
Gabriel
Sometimes being away from everything, you know, makes you see things a little differently.
Emily
Yeah.
Gabriel
It's good to reflect on where we've come from. Each step forward holds a piece of our past. Our hopes, our hurts. They shape us. It can be hard to look back. But there's strength in sharing.
Emily
I don't know. I've never really talked about it. It's complicated.
Gabriel
Well, we've got a long walk ahead, so no pressure.
Emily
Sometimes it feels like everyone else has this solid foundation. Like they really belong somewhere. And me, I never really had that.
Joseph
That must be hard. Feeling like you don't have a place.
Emily
My dad, he drank a lot. And when he did, it was like everything else just disappeared. It was like I was invisible. He'd come home and I'd see that look in his eyes and I just know. I'd go to my room, close the door and try to block out the noise. And my mom? She was there. Physically, I guess, but not really. I'd be in the same room as them, but I was completely alone. After a while, I stopped trying. Stopped expecting anything from them. I'd come home, go straight to my room and just keep to myself. I didn't bother them, and they didn't bother me. It was easier that way, I guess. But sometimes I'd lie in bed and think about what it would be like to feel safe, I guess. Or seen to have someone really listen, you know? I'd see other kids with their families, laughing, talking. And. I don't know, I just wonder what that felt like. To really belong somewhere. Like really belong.
Gabriel
You deserve that, Emily. You deserve all of it and more. No one should have to feel alone like that.
Emily
Yeah, well, you get used to it, I guess. It becomes normal. I learn to depend on myself, keep everything to myself. It's hard to open up now. Even with you guys.
Gabriel
Emily, I'm so sorry for the loneliness you felt. No one should have to grow up feeling unseen. But maybe being here with us and with your friends, it's a chance to start again.
Emily
Thank you, Mary. I don't know if I'll ever really believe that. But I guess it helps to hear it.
Joseph
You know, I kind of get it. At least in my own way. I grew up with just my mom. She was everything to me. But she had to work all the time. There was never much left over, if you know what I mean. So I was alone a lot, too. And you try not to let it get to you.
Gabriel
But it does.
Mary
Sometimes the most beautiful things can come from difficult places. In our struggles, we're shaped, given strength we didn't have.
Gabriel
Faith takes work. I've had my doubts too. But in time, I learned that there's always a light. Even in the darkest places.
Mary
I believe you are stronger than you know, Emily. You've been through so much. And yet here you are. That takes a certain kind of strength. Gabriel
I feel so selfish being the only one able to rest on the donkey. Would one of you like a turn? You're the one who's pregnant, Mary. We aren't going to make you walk. Are you all sure?
Mary
Yes, my dear. We're sure.
Gabriel
Okay.
Traveler
Well, well. What do we have here? Out for a little stroll, are we?
Mary
We're just passing through, friend. We don't want any trouble.
Traveler
Trouble? I just need a little help. Surely you've got something to spare.
Mary
Sir, we have nothing at the moment. I don't know where you came from, but if you're looking for shelter, there is a city a day's journey behind us.
Traveler
I don't want directions.
Gabriel
What is it that you're searching for?
Traveler
Food, money, the company of a beautiful woman. And I'm sure you have one of those things to spare a weary traveler.
Gabriel
I think you're looking for more than that. There's a heaviness in your eyes. Like someone who's lost someone dear.
Traveler
What do you know about me? You know nothing, woman.
Gabriel
I know that sometimes people do things out of hurt, out of a sense of loss that weighs them down. You've been alone for a very long time, haven't you?
Traveler
I. I had a family once. A wife, a daughter. But they're gone now. I lost them. And since then, nothing's mattered.
Gabriel
Losing loved ones is a pain I cannot begin to imagine. Especially your own child. I am sorry for your loss.
Traveler
What difference does it make? They're gone. Nothing I do brings them back.
Gabriel
Sometimes when we lose everything, we feel lost ourselves. But there's always a way forward. God's love is greater than any loss. And his peace is there for you.
Traveler
I've been wandering for so long. Alone. Looking for anything to fill the emptiness.
Gabriel
Perhaps it isn't something you need to find, but someone. There's peace in knowing you're not alone. God is with you even now, my friend. Allow us to pass through. As you can see, we have very little and mean you no harm.
Traveler
Of course.
Narrator
Go on.
Gabriel
Thank you.
Traveler
It's been a long time since someone has spoken to me like that. Thank you.
Gabriel
How did you do that?
Joseph
How did you know exactly what to say?
Gabriel
Sometimes all someone needs is to feel seen. Even in his pain. He was searching for hope, For a reason to keep going. We all need that, don't we?
Emily
I guess so. Sometimes it feels like you're carrying a weight that you can't put down. But hearing someone say it's okay to feel that way, it makes a difference.
Gabriel
God never leaves us. Even when we feel lost.
Mary
There is a small village a few miles ahead. After we stop at the well, we can head that way for the evening. I'm sure there's a place to stay for the night. Then tomorrow, Bethlehem.
Gabriel
Thank you, Joseph.

Narrator
I know I wasn't really into the whole sheep thing during the day, but I gotta hand it to you guys. Sitting under the stars around a fire, it beats anything back home.
Azariah
It has its appeal. Out here, you get used to the rhythm. The hills, the flock, the sky, it all. I don't know, it starts to feel like home.
Shepherd
Even with the wolves and long hours, Especially the wolves.
Azariah
There's no sleep quite like the sleep of knowing you're full. Flock is safe.
Narrator
It's beautiful in a way I don't think I've ever really noticed before. What are you thinking, Jake? I guess I'm realizing maybe for the first time, that back home I spent so much time rushing around trying to get from one place to the next that I never really saw anything.
Azariah
You know, it's easy to miss things when we're always moving. Out here, there's nowhere to go but where you are. It teaches you to see and to listen.
Narrator
Maybe that's what everyone's looking for, this kind of peace. But most of the time, they're too busy chasing after things to notice it's right in front of them.
Azariah
And where you come from, what is it that people chase after?
Narrator
Everything. Money, success, recognition. Stuff that's supposed to make you happy, but usually just makes you want more.
Azariah
Are they happy?
Narrator
Sometimes. But it doesn't last. It's like the more they get, the more they want. The more they want, the more restless they feel. It's a Vicious cycle.
Shepherd
Yeah, but that doesn't stop anyone. Everyone is just looking for the next best thing.
Azariah
So they're like our flock. Always wandering, always searching. Do any of you back home ever feel like you're meant for something else? Something more? After my talk with Adam, I would say I think we all wonder about the more from time to time. But for me, it's more about being faithful where I am. If there's something bigger, I trust God will reveal it. Some nights I do wonder what else is out there. But I know my place here. There's a comfort in that.
Narrator
And you don't feel trapped by it? Stuck, I mean.
Azariah
Trapped, no. But there are days it feels small. Like there's something beyond these hills that I'll never see. Something grand, Something that's waiting.
Narrator
I think that's just human nature. No matter where we are, we're always looking for something else.
Azariah
Perhaps. But maybe that's God's way of calling us closer. Drawing us to seek more of him. I don't know. But I feel as if something holy is drawing near. It's like heaven is closer to us than it's ever been.
Narrator
What is happening?
Shepherd
Are you all seeing this? Tell me I'm not imagining this.
Azariah
This light. It's like nothing I've ever seen. What is happening?
Shepherd
I don't know.
Azariah
Calm yourselves. This feels holy.
Angel
Do not be afraid.
Azariah
Who are you?
Angel
I bring you good news of great joy for all people today in the town of David. David, a savior has been born to you. He is Christ, the Lord.
Azariah
The Messiah. He's come to us.
Angel
Yes. A child. The Promised One who will bring light to all. This will be a sign to you. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Azariah
Why? Why us? Why would heaven come to shepherds like us?
Angel
Because God has chosen you. He has seen your faith, your quiet dedication, your love for even the smallest of his creatures. In your humble hearts, you have found room for his life.
Azariah
I. I never thought. I. I never thought I'd live to see this day.
Angel
Take heart, Azariah. This night heaven rejoices and the promise is fulfilled.
Narrator
What the heck is going on?
Azariah
This. This is the sound of heaven. I never knew such beauty could exist. It's beyond anything I ever imagined. Like heaven itself touched earth. Thank you. Thank you for bringing us this message.
Angel
Go now, Azariah. Witness what has been promised. For unto you and unto all, a savior is born.
Azariah
Heaven has touched earth and we have been chosen to witness it.
Shepherd
So we're supposed to go right to see him.
Azariah
Yes. To Bethlehem. We've been called to witness this miracle, the fulfillment of God's promise.
Shepherd
How do we even go back to normal life after this? After seeing all of this?
Azariah
I don't think we were meant to go back. From now on, we walk with the memory of heaven in our hearts.
Shepherd
All my life, I wondered if I'd ever know what it meant to feel complete. Now I think I might.
Narrator
Do you think people will believe us?
Azariah
Maybe not. But I think it's enough that we believe it, that we've seen it. That's all that matters. Let's go. My friends, we have been shown the light, and now we walk toward his promise.
