This episode is brought to you by Northwest Christian School Online. To learn more, visit ncsonline.org previously on Eyewitness. Oh, hey, one thing I forgot to tell you guys. You're not all together for this adventure. See if you can find your way back to each other.
Emily
Wait, what? We have to look around, walk around, talk to some people, and maybe we'll figure it out that way. What about those people there? Hey, are we supposed to talk to you? Emily, stop. That is not how this works. I told you, we have to figure it out. But shouting at Randos is not the way it's gonna get done. Hey, you see that guy standing over there? What about him? He looks like he's crying.
Joseph
What can I do for you all?
Emily
We saw you from back there. We wanted to make sure you were okay.
Joseph
It's my wife. She is pregnant.
Emily
Congratulations. That's great news.
Joseph
It would be great news, except I'm not the father.
Jake
There's gotta be something around here, right? People just don't leave herds of sheep alone, do they?
Azariah
Who comes near my flock?
Emily
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Miles
Hey.
Jake
It's.
Miles
It's okay.
Azariah
You were brought here. But by what? Perhaps the stars guided you. If the stars have brought you, perhaps there is more here than any of us know. Please. Your names?
Miles
I'm Miles.
Jake
Jake.
Joseph
Adam.
Azariah
Very interesting names. I am Azariah.
Emily
I was doing some chores around the house and I noticed something. That's when I saw him.
Jake
You're going to have a son.
Azariah
And his name will be Jesus.
Jake
God's spirit will come upon you and his power will make this possible.
Emily
Whatever he needs, I'm his servant. It's so hard to believe, you know? An angel, a miraculous child. It all sounds like a story. One that's too good to be true. Faith doesn't remove the questions. It just gives us the courage to keep walking with them.
Azariah
I believe that in every journey the Almighty has a lesson for us, even in the smallest ones. Sometimes he calls us to search for others. And along the way, we discover he's leading us closer to himself. It'll be getting dark soon. And tonight feels different.
Joseph
Different how?
Azariah
I feel as though we're on the edge of something holy.
Emily
Sometimes it feels like everyone else has this solid foundation. Like they really belong somewhere. And me. I never really had that. You deserve that, Emily. You deserve all of it and more. No one should have to feel alone like that. It's hard to open up now, even with you guys. Sometimes all someone needs is to feel seen. We all need that, don't we?
Azariah
This Light. It's like nothing I've ever seen. What is happening?
Joseph
I bring you good news of great.
Azariah
Joy for all people.
Joseph
Today in the town of David, a savior has been born to you. He is Christ the Lord. Go now, Azariah. Witness what has been promised. For unto you and unto all, a savior is born.
Emily
Is it just me, or does this road feel longer every time you look at it? I thought we'd be there by now.
Joseph
Bethlehem is just over the next hill. Not much farther, my friends.
Emily
Joseph, please.
Joseph
We're almost there. I'll find us a place to rest as soon as we arrive.
Emily
Hey, if you need a break, we can stop for a moment, right? Joseph?
Joseph
No, we should press on. The city will be filling up fast. The census has drawn people from everywhere, and we need to find shelter before nightfall.
Emily
Yeah. Cause finding a room is gonna be so difficult. Finally, we made it.
Joseph
Yes, but the journey is not over yet.
Emily
It's like a sea of people here. Does anyone else feel a bit out of place? Yeah, this is nothing like back home. Maybe Disneyland.
Joseph
Stay close. The streets can be confusing, especially at night.
Emily
Joseph, I need to find a place to rest quickly.
Joseph
We'll find an inn. There must be room somewhere. I see one down that path. Come on. This way. You know, when I came here, I thought this would be a journey of seeing things, experiencing things I could understand. But it's more than that. It's like it's been reshaping me on the inside.
Miles
That's the nature of faith, Adam. It's not always loud. It doesn't have to shout at us. Sometimes it just shifts something inside us, like a quiet strength. Before we even realize it, we're changed.
Joseph
Yeah, Maybe I've been looking in all the wrong places. I thought it'd be something to understand. But maybe. Maybe it's about being willing to see.
Azariah
Faith does surprise us. It takes us further than we ever thought we'd go, even to places like this. The city is ahead. Despite being here before. It means something different this time. I can feel it.
Joseph
Do you think we'll even recognize him? I mean, he's supposed to be the Savior. Do you think he'll look different? Like someone you can tell? Special, even as a child?
Jake
Maybe this isn't just anyone we're about to meet. You'd think there'd be something royal about him, something that shows he's a king.
Miles
Or maybe not. Doesn't seem like he'd be one to care much for crowns and robes, by the way the angel described it.
Azariah
Still, if he's the Savior. I can't help but think he'll have a presence.
Jake
I don't know why, but I imagine him as someone who's close to people. Not distant like a regular king. Like maybe he's the kind who'd really see you, right down to who you are inside.
Miles
Who doesn't care about rank or status, rich or poor, shepherd or king. He talked to you just the same.
Azariah
A king who'd sit down right here in the dirt with us. Now, that would be something to behold.
Jake
Yes?
Joseph
Good evening. My wife is with child. We've come a long way and need a place to stay. Do you have a room?
Azariah
I'm sorry, friend.
Jake
Every room is taken. There's no space left here tonight.
Emily
Please.
Jake
You're not the first I've had to turn away tonight.
Miles
This census has the whole city overrun.
Jake
You might find somewhere farther out.
Azariah
But I'd hurry if I were you.
Joseph
Thank you for your time.
Emily
I don't know how much farther I can go, Joseph.
Joseph
I know. We'll find something.
Emily
Then let's keep going. We're all in this together. I think I saw a sign for an inn just down the road. We must move quickly. He's coming soon. I can feel it.
Joseph
Quickly, everyone. Excuse me. My wife is with child and we've been searching everywhere. Do you have any space left? Even a small corner would be enough.
Jake
I'm sorry, friend. We're full up. There's a place on the other side of town. It's a small inn. It's not much, but they may have room. It's worth a try.
Emily
Thank you for your kindness.
Azariah
Good evening, friend. We're looking for someone. A husband and wife. Maybe with child. Have you seen anyone come through looking for a place to stay? Are you blind? I beg your pardon? Look around you.
Jake
Everyone is here for the census. Everyone needs a place to stay. Use the head God gave you.
Azariah
I don't know why I thought finding them here would be easy and less rude.
Miles
Not everybody received the call to witness something extraordinary.
Azariah
True. Come, my friends. Let's continue our search. If you're here for a room, afraid we're full.
Joseph
Please, my wife. We've come so far and she's due soon. We just need somewhere to rest.
Azariah
There's no room inside, but there's a stable out back. It's nothing special that you'll have shelter from the cold.
Joseph
Thank you, truly, thank you.
Azariah
It's the least I can offer. Follow me. Make yourselves comfortable.
Joseph
Thank you, truly, thank you. I'm so sorry, Mary. This is a filthy Place for a baby.
Emily
It's enough. Joseph. This will do. My grandma used to say, sometimes the greatest things come from the most humble places. Maybe this is what she meant. The stable. It's not much, but this is exactly where it's meant to be.
Joseph
Maybe so. Jen, Quinn, Emily, will you please look around for what we can use to place the baby once he comes? Maybe that manger.
Emily
The what?
Joseph
The manger. The trough over there the animals eat from.
Emily
Oh, that's what a manger is. No crib for a bed. Now I get it.
Jake
We have no rooms left. I'm sorry.
Azariah
No, please. We are looking for someone. A young man and a young woman. She would be with child who ready to deliver any moment. Have you seen them? Yeah, I saw them. Are they here?
Jake
I said I saw them. I didn't say they're here.
Azariah
Oh, okay.
Jake
Sent them to the inn further in town. They're probably there.
Azariah
Yes. Thank you. Follow me.
Emily
Joseph. It's time. He's coming.
Joseph
I'm here, my love. What do you need?
Emily
I don't know. But the pain is sharp and they are so close.
Joseph
I know. I'm here. I'm with you.
Emily
Thank you. This is actually happening, isn't it? Yeah.
Azariah
Yes? Good evening. We are looking for a young couple, possibly with child or about to be. Have you seen anyone like this? Yes, they're here. I have no rooms available, so I had to send them to the stable. Help yourself. It's just around the corner there. Thank you, my friend. Thank you.
Miles
Azariah. Why did you stop?
Azariah
I've dreamed at this moment all my life, seeing something miraculous. But standing here now, knowing the Savior is within these walls. I don't know if I'm worthy to enter.
Miles
None of us are. It's grace. Grace given freely beyond anything we could ever deserve. If anything, it's your humility that makes you ready for this. It's that reverence, that heart of yours. That's why we're here.
Azariah
I only hope I'm worthy of this. Of standing in his presence.
Miles
What should we do, Azariah?
Azariah
Please, my friends. I need to be in the moment and savor the beauty of what God has given me.
Joseph
You're doing great, my love. One more push. He's beautiful.
Emily
Please let me hold him. You're so beautiful, my child. My Jesus. I can't believe it. I've heard this story countless times, but I never imagined it this way. It's perfect. He's perfect.
Azariah
Forgive our intrusion, friends. My name is Azariah. I'm a lowly shepherd from the hills outside Bethlehem. I. I heard about the child.
Emily
How did you hear about us?
Azariah
It was. Well, it's hard to explain.
Emily
Miles.
Miles
Quinn.
Emily
Quinn, you know these men? Yes. Miles, I'm so glad you're here.
Miles
Me too.
Emily
Please continue, Azariah.
Azariah
We were with the flock, watching over them as we do each night. And suddenly, the sky, it was filled with light brighter than anything I'd ever seen. And an angel. Yes. An angel. He told us about your son. About the Savior. He told us to come to find you, to find him.
Emily
All for this child.
Azariah
I'm only a shepherd, not learned or not wise. But in that moment, when the angel spoke, I felt something like. Like I was being called to witness something holy. And I couldn't. I couldn't ignore it.
Emily
It isn't about being wise, Azariah. We are here because of faith. And faith doesn't choose only the wise. It finds the humble, the willing. You all are welcome to see him.
Azariah
Thank you. I never dreamed I would see that I would stand here in the presence of God's promise. I've spent my life watching over my flock, protecting them, caring for them. But this. This is beyond anything I ever imagined.
Joseph
You were called Azariah, just as we were. And your journey, your faith, brought you here.
Azariah
I have no gift to bring. Nothing to offer him. Just my heart and my thanks.
Emily
I know that's all he'll ask for.
Miles
Jake. You okay?
Jake
I've spent so much of my life just searching, you know, trying to find something, anything that would fill this emptiness. I thought maybe if I had enough experiences, saw enough of the world, I'd figure it out. But somehow every answer felt hollow, like it only scratched the surface.
Miles
It's like you were always looking for something, but you didn't know what, right? Like something's missing.
Jake
Yeah. And tonight. It's strange, but for the first time, that ache, it's just gone. Standing here, seeing him, it was like I finally found that something.
Emily
That's the beauty of faith. It fills places we don't even realize are empty. And it doesn't demand understanding. It just asks that we're open to it.
Jake
I never thought that faith would be the answer. I used to think it was all. I don't know, something people just clung to because they needed to feel safe. But tonight, it's like everything I've been chasing has led me here.
Azariah
As someone who wanders with sheep, I can assure you that faith provides freedom. Freedom from that endless search, from needing to have it all figured out. It's like finally finding Rest after a long journey.
Jake
Maybe that's it. Maybe I've been looking for rest this whole time. Just a place to belong. A truth to hold onto. And now I think I've found it. So what do I do now? I don't know the first thing. About faith. About following something like this. How do I even start?
Miles
You've already started. Tonight you opened yourself up to something greater. Keep seeking, but with faith, not doubt. Surround yourself with others who can encourage you. Quinn, myself. People like Azariah, Mary, Joseph. We're here for you.
Jake
I don't have all the answers, but I don't feel the need to have them all. Somehow knowing that he's out there, that he's real. It's enough.
Joseph
Elysium program ending.
Jake
All right, guys. I hope you enjoyed the experience. Please don't remove any of the gear. Our team will do that. I'm sorry, but you'll have to excuse me. I have another meeting I have to get to. But Miles will run you through the post experience stuff.
Miles
So. Jake, what are you doing on Sunday?
Jake
I'll be there.
Emily
Are you okay, Emily? I don't feel very well.
Miles
You don't look so good. Are you okay?
Emily
I think it's.
Miles
She passed out. Someone call 911.
Jake
Thank you for joining us for season two of eyewitness. Emily's journey is far from over, and the answers you've been waiting for are just around the corner. Season three premieres this April. Don't miss it.
