Mickey Jo
Oh, my God. Hey.
Aaron James
Hello.
Mickey Jo
Welcome back to my theatre themed YouTube channel. My name is Mickey Jo.
Aaron James
And I am Aaron James.
Mickey Jo
And today we are going to talk through our New Year's resolutions.
Aaron James
Because it's. It's just a new year.
Mickey Jo
As Norma Desmond once said, happy New Year, darling. Yeah, it is. It is mid to late January. That was scary. It was kind of like Ross from Man Wazowski. I couldn't think of any other New Year's theater references. Let's revisit our purpose here. My name is Mickey Jo. I am a theatre critic. I see hundreds of shows every year. I talk about them here on social media. Aaron is my fiance. We travel the world together seeing shows all the time.
Aaron James
Yes.
Mickey Jo
And we have certain goals that we wish to achieve and we want to push ourselves and. And do more. And we did this last year for the first time. And we're gonna take a look back at those today. Talk about the plan.
Aaron James
So I have them all loaded on my phone. I watch the videos back, put clay to them all on here. So what I'm going to do is I will read out the resolution in order of what we did. First, we're going to reflect when we get to each one on did we achieve it? Did we not achieve it? Then we can decide do we want to stick with that resolution for the next year. Either we completed it, but we want to do it again, or we didn't achieve it, so we want to keep it as a goal. Or we can swap it. We completed it. It's not. It's not of use for the year. We think we're going to do it anyhow this year. So what? Let's not use it as a clear goal for the year. We can amend it. Basically, we do want to do that resolution again, but either we think we can do more or we've learned that it's not quite correct for us. It doesn't serve us broccoli. So we're going to amend it slightly. So basically we should have six each and then at the end we can talk about maybe any extras that we have or just any thoughts in general on the year.
Mickey Jo
Yeah. So theater going, resolutions, stick, switch or shift?
Aaron James
Oh, I like that more. I was trying to think shift. Yeah, there's shift for goals.
Mickey Jo
Listen, this is what I do, okay? Let's just get straight into it. Also, of course, share your own. If this inspires you to come up with some share Them in the comments down below and weigh in on ours and which ones you think we will complete and which ones you think will. We won't. And any you think that we should add.
Aaron James
Yes, please let us know.
Mickey Jo
Hit me with the first resolutions from last year.
Aaron James
Okay, so the first resolution of the year came from yourself.
Mickey Jo
It was book that last show. This was all about, like, we would wait until there was a show we'd fallen in love with and then like, closing would roll around and we'd be like, ugh, closing performances sold out. I wish we'd booked it in advance. And it's like, if you know you're going to want to be there, if you know you love a show, we should just book the closing of, like, a limited run. And did we do this?
Aaron James
So I put in Ethos. Yes. Because, for example, with Evita, when we booked tickets, we booked the ticket for near the start of the room when it was opening, and we booked one in September because we knew we would go back.
Mickey Jo
We also booked a lot of first previews.
Aaron James
We booked early as well for shows for Shucked. So I think the ethos.
Mickey Jo
We did do Shucked and Stereophonic.
Aaron James
Yeah. And we went back to Stereophonic.
Mickey Jo
We did. We did, yeah.
Aaron James
Whereas I feel like the Ethos we kept. I would say there was. I think there wasn't actually enough shows that we were desperate to be at the final performance because it wasn't long Runners closing. Sure. So I think we maybe went back to shows when we knew we liked it, but it wasn't like the case of, I think, prior years where we were kind of upset we hadn't booked early enough.
Mickey Jo
Okay. Do you think we should stick, switch or shift?
Aaron James
Well, this is your one.
Mickey Jo
I know, but we can talk about it together.
Aaron James
I think it should be shifted.
Mickey Jo
Okay.
Aaron James
Because I think it's a good mentality for us to keep in that we are cognizant a bit earlier in advance before tickets get more. So I think if we know we want to be at the first preview because we had this. To be fair with Paddington, Paddington was.
Mickey Jo
A lesson learned because we booked resale tickets pretty late on for a lot of money. But I think we've already started learning.
Aaron James
From that because we did the same.
Mickey Jo
With Greatest Showmans we've booked for this year.
Aaron James
So I kind of think it's. I think it's a useful one. I don't think the. The mindset really works because unless there's enough shows for us to feel like we want to book that last show, it maybe doesn't it feels kind of like a wasted space, if that makes sense.
Mickey Jo
So we'll just call this one Plan Ahead.
Aaron James
Yeah. Yeah, Plan Ahead.
Mickey Jo
Book in advance.
Aaron James
Yeah. For shows we really care about. Let's not rely too much on fate that we get to see it.
Mickey Jo
Sure. Okay. Let's move on to the next one.
Aaron James
So the next one was my one.
Mickey Jo
Okay.
Aaron James
And it was to use mezzanine for. I did very much used it. Love the stats of it. Recommend if you're an iPhone user, get mezzanine. It's great. I'm not sponsored. I actually pay for their patron membership. So just very big fan. But I used it. It's really useful. I think I'm gonna do that regardless. So for me, that's kind of a. Yes. Done. I'm gonna do a shift slash switch.
Mickey Jo
A shift slash switch. Oh, my gosh.
Aaron James
It's similar. Essentially. I want to make sure that with. With the shows I'm seeing, I put out a form of content or document it on like Instagram or Tick Tock or try and just do that a little bit more that they're represented. I feel like at the start of the year, I've, like. At the end of the year, the start of the year, I started to do kind of a carousel of the different moments. So kind of just not wasting the stuff that I get for the shows. That's kind of my. It's the same as Mezzanine is just more visually or contenty. But I think that's a.
Mickey Jo
That's a good one.
Aaron James
Yeah. I think my bare. I want to do the bare minimum is there's content of the shows and I use the content that I make and I don't wait for the perfect thing. So number three was another me.
Mickey Jo
It was to visit or tick off another Broadway theater.
Aaron James
And we did.
Mickey Jo
We did.
Aaron James
Because we went to the Majestic for the first time.
Mickey Jo
Yes.
Aaron James
Oh.
Mickey Jo
This was our kind of cheating one because we already knew that that was happening.
Aaron James
So we knew we were going to go to the Majestic, but did we.
Mickey Jo
Go the whole rest of the year?
Aaron James
We didn't see a different one because we only have five theaters left.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
So there are physically only five that are left. Four of those have long runners in. Yes. One doesn't. One has been changing. We used to have long runners. Currently hasn't. I think at the time last year, we thought we might have seen Goodnight, Good luck, but we didn't.
Mickey Jo
Sure.
Aaron James
So we were like, maybe we'll see two. Maybe we'll go to more odds.
Mickey Jo
Feel good that at Some point this year. We probably will visit the Winter Garden at some point. But I might have said that last year and it didn't end up happening. Does that really need to be an entire resolution?
Aaron James
This is my thing.
Mickey Jo
Just to visit the Winter Garden Theatre.
Aaron James
That's where that's. That's my thing. It's kind of like. Do I put it there as like a. Well, we've only got five left. So let's push towards completing a full house.
Mickey Jo
I think. I think switch. Because.
Aaron James
Switch it.
Mickey Jo
Yeah. We're gonna keep going to those regardless. We're going to be looking for ways. We always know that that's a priority. It's like ticking off like Sondheims and anything else. It doesn't need to be a specific focus for 2026 because I don't think it's within reach yet to do all of them. Okay, so what else do you want to bring in? Something completely different.
Aaron James
Oh, gosh. Do I have one ready to say right now?
Mickey Jo
I can do one if you want.
Aaron James
Oh, you're gonna take one of my.
Mickey Jo
It's kind of shared between us.
Aaron James
Are we sharing this yet?
Mickey Jo
I think so.
Aaron James
Let's share this. Yeah. Okay. Bring the.
Mickey Jo
Because we're gonna share the trips.
Aaron James
It's true.
Mickey Jo
When I say this next one, you're gonna go along for the round.
Aaron James
This is the hard thing. I think, like we don't do enough differently.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
That we won't probably share it. We might have numbers different.
Mickey Jo
You'll find out. So this next one, it might take. It will take us to some new theaters. Because I. We've already started doing this just about. I would like to see more opera. And by more opera, I mean any Opera in 2026. There are a few little corners of the live entertainment cultural realm that remains sort of under explored by me and by us. Dance is one of those. Classical dance, contemporary dance, ballet, opera is another. And I feel of them, opera is the next within reach.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
And there are footholds and there are elements of recognition and I want to kind of segue into it and kind of like document that journey and talk about how musical theatre people can get into opera by taking the easiest path by starting with the most accessible. And then the routes through of like. Oh, this we know because this is inspired by. This is like. This was Miss Saigon, this was Rent, whatever.
Aaron James
And I think it helps. So recently we've watched a lot of. We started to watch more musicals. Not in English. Yes. And I think as you start to get aware of the different languages it does help, yeah.
Mickey Jo
But I'm really determined because I see some of these productions and we love great vocals, we love big orchestras, big productions, and that is sort of a diminishing feature of the commercial musical theatre world. But it's not. It remains very grand in opera. And some of the most gorgeous theaters around the world are opera houses. So I think, for so many reasons, opera in 2026.
Aaron James
Okay, so the next resolution was the RSC and the National.
Mickey Jo
So I was really determined to more frequently. I felt like I wasn't paying enough visits to the RSC and to the National Theatre. And I started really strong with the National. I sort of. I began to fall off a little bit more towards the end of the year. But in any case, I think I have a better relationship with them now as a critic than I did. I must have gone to three or four shows at the national last year as a critic. The rsc, way more. Way more. We did loads and we continue to do loads at the rsc and they're doing great work, so the timing was perfect. I do have some others that I've started to think about recently that are feeling a bit neglected. The Donmar Warehouse is one of them. I definitely want to make sure that we are going to the Donmar Moor. Are there any other theatres that you would like to throw in here? Oh, no, I have another one which I know I want to visit a lot this year, which is the Royal Court.
Aaron James
Yes.
Mickey Jo
And certainly those venues where new writing is at the forefront. We could throw some fringe stuff in.
Aaron James
Here or just, oh, regional or like. I mean, in London in general. There's places like For Bush and I was going to say the Almeida, because I feel like we only really ever go to the Almeida when it's a musical.
Mickey Jo
I mean, speak for you. I've seen two plays at the Almeida, but I don't as often take you along for the ride.
Aaron James
Yeah. So I think there's that. It's interesting, you saying about new writing, because it is wild. But if I think to like five or six years ago, like seven, eight years ago, I watched a lot of new playwriting, but now we do that a lot at Fringe. It's interesting that that's something that we've kind of seen ourselves. I like this.
Mickey Jo
I have three venues I'm really trying to visit and the National I'm still working on. So this is a shifted one.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
The National I'm still working on. Go is a big priority. Royal Court is a big priority. But I know I'm Going to do it and the public in New York. I've been so excited to do a couple of press bookings with the public and that means a lot to me to be able to do those. And I'm excited for more of those in 2026.
Aaron James
The next one was to visit at.
Mickey Jo
Least three new to me UK theatres.
Aaron James
We did that last year. There was at least three that I knew. That was the first visit. Royal Exchange was one. Yeah.
Mickey Jo
That was a great one.
Aaron James
I'd never been to the Arcola before, so that was a new one for me.
Mickey Jo
Story House.
Aaron James
Yes. I'd never been to Story Story House in Chester. You went to. For both of us. You went to new ones because you went to the festival in Edinburgh.
Mickey Jo
Oh, yes.
Aaron James
Yeah. So there was quite a few that I went to for the first time and I want to keep that as a push.
Mickey Jo
I think we could formalize it.
Aaron James
Well, this is the thing. I'd like to do a number. Originally I was going to be really safe and save free, but I kind of maybe pushed towards 5. My big thing is that sometimes with maybe the location or just when chose a line to go to. But I love when I get to see a new space and see how it works and see the vibe of it and there's theatres. But I've always wanted to kind of see like I've never seen the Minack.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
I've never seen for Theater by the Lake I used to go to every single year, but I'd never watched a show there.
Mickey Jo
I've been to the Minack, but I've not watched a show there.
Aaron James
Yeah, yeah. So for me, for some of those theaters that I would love to. I would just like to like see more theaters and get to know them more because I feel like then when we're talking about theater and we're talking about experiences or what could work at a theatre especially, I think mainly my focus is always on producing houses across the country. Because then when a show's amounts for their. You can. I can kind of go. That's a great. That's a great show to start there. And especially any cool musicals that we've seen in London or big ones, that that's their home. That's where that show started. I'd love to.
Mickey Jo
It was quite eye opening to map out the counties in which we had seen theatre and I thought it would be much more spread and it's really not. It's so south heavy and there's swathes of the country and I think five is a great number. To aspire to. And if not to make this a definite. But if we could hit a bit more of Scotland and a bit of Wales in that.
Aaron James
I would love to see theatre in Wales. Wales is my. I can't believe I haven't. I've seen theatre so close to the border where Welsh is one of the main languages. That's everywhere. Like I've seen theatre in. In Chester and similarly down. Just never theatre specifically in Wales. And I'm part Welsh. So yeah, a small amount of Welsh. But I would like to say I've seen it in. Well, that's a good plan in Wales.
Mickey Jo
Let's head on to the next one.
Aaron James
So this was a new one. Okay, do the homework.
Mickey Jo
I can give myself some points for this because I have the clearest vision of. It's always once a year. There's one I really commit to and it should be more often than once a year. But it was for Here We Are. It was last year and I knew this was my second time seeing Here We Are. I didn't enjoy it Off Broadway. I had the wrong expectation and I thought I'm going to watch these films. And they were both foreign language Luis Bunuel films. And I remember watching them in installments on various train journeys because I was so busy in the weeks leading up to it. I just trying to battle my way through these perhaps slightly inaccessible pieces of cinema. I. Outside of that, I. There weren't that many instances. I didn't read a lot of books that things were based on or watch a lot of movie source material. It was a lot of stuff I already knew. There weren't many occasions where it felt like it was acutely necessary to do that. But I am once again trying to. I am going to stick with that. In 2026, I'm already reading a book that I am going to see a theatrical adaptation of. And I like that because it's going to make me read more books. Yeah. And I think I used to work in a library for several years. My mother worked in a library. I read a thing the other day that so many of the problems of society right now, so many of our social problems, stem from the fact that we aren't reading enough books. The whole AI thing, a lack of creativity, a lack of imagination, a lack of communication and self belief and aspiration. We're not reading enough books. So if that makes me read more, if it makes us watch movies that we really ought to have seen. Yeah, it's sort of. That's a nice cultural byproduct. Of doing the homework and being the best version of a critic that I can be.
Aaron James
So this is another year one.
Mickey Jo
Okay. This says awards show press rooms. I did that.
Aaron James
You did that?
Mickey Jo
I did that. And I'm still sort of deciding year on year, because the big one is the Oliviers, and I have never done anything official with the Oliviers.
Aaron James
Yes.
Mickey Jo
And I don't think I want to ever do the press room at the Oliviers because I like.
Aaron James
You like being in the room and getting. Yeah, it's a big moment. And I thought when you spend the whole year, like, following all the shows that are opening, forming attachments to shows, just documenting everything, I think that moment. And there's the same with the Tonys. It's such a culmination of kind of, like, part of your soul in it. And so that's end of year party. Yeah. And you want to be in the end. Being in the room and seeing everybody react and seeing. Hearing the speeches and kind of seeing the people that have been involved in and sharing the success and being able to celebrate and clap and have that. It's kind of magical. And it's kind of that one moment where you're all together. And I think, although it can be, like, a great thing to be able to talk to people after and interview them and stuff, I think you. And speaking partly on behalf of you in some ways, but, like, I think there's. There's something kind of cathartic about it. And I don't know if being in the room, you lose that moment.
Mickey Jo
It's a very warped way to enjoy. Enjoy. It's the wrong word. But to experience the award shows. So there's some. I just like to be there. If we can be at the Tonys this year, that would be great in the room somehow. But in terms of press rooms, I did Watson Stage last year. I did Stage Debut Awards again, which was probably one of the only ones I'd ever done before. And I did the Drama Desks in New York, which was huge for me to get to do one in New York. So I would love to do probably those three again, and that would be enough for me. But I don't need to keep that resolution because I did it as fully as I think I wanted to. So let's switch that for a different resolution. What else can I pull out from my list? This one is kind of similar because it's, again, to do with, like, in the professional realm. For me, I think I would like to be published for writing something in a new outlet and I have written before for what's onstage.com for. For Broadway World, for Musicals magazine recently quite a lot and sort of ongoingly for londontheatre.co.uk and London Theatre Magazine. I would like to do another one, maybe one that's like a bit bigger and scarier to me that I've kind of feared a little bit. We'll see if. If that opportunity becomes available. If there's something. It would have to. I think it would have to be motivated by something that I feel needed to be said in a certain publication and that I felt I was the right person to say it because often there are things where this platform I have here, it's a place I can say almost anything. And I do.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
But sometimes there are things where I think, oh, that would be a good. They should run a feature piece about this. They should run an opinion piece about this. And it makes more sense for. If I was to write it for there than to say it on here. So that's something that I think I would like to do. But it scares me.
Aaron James
My one next was to be consistent grow theater content and series. I was harsh myself and I just put no to this and I did do. And like, I think when you reflect, you're like, oh, I was being harsh on myself. But definitely, I think I want to. I want to switch this. But it's probably similar. Ish. It. It is that I feel like this year, 2026, it feels like a. In some ways already. It's a bit like a here goes nothing year where I think I've. I think 2025 was a year of a lot of change for me in many ways in terms of what I do and con and like, how I view myself in the industry. It was a lot of internal looking. And then this year I just kind of go, you already started the year of going, let's see, let's play, let's do and let's create. And also I. I think we can talk about this is like, also support each other.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
Like, this has kind of been a year of like, of also me finding ways to help out with this and everything more.
Mickey Jo
And everything we're doing is now involves a little bit more of both of us and like, I think there is more documenting happening and more content already of the couple weeks we've had because more vlogging, which is going to be shared between the two of us, by which I mean we're both going to be holding the camera.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
And not just me saying, erin's over there and making you walk quickly and filming you while you're eating. But like, truly, that being from both of our voices shared between both of our YouTube channels. And you've been editing it. Yeah.
Aaron James
So I edited a recent London vlog and we launched your recent newsletter, the Substack. Yeah. So I've been looking after that. And if you didn't know already, I'd already been looking after the podcast. Yes. So it's been a fun kind of. It's been, it's. It's an interesting and kind of a cool way of starting the year, which has been a lot more. I trying to be a bit more free on myself in like embracing the fact that I love creating content and theater content in many ways and also to kind of have a bit more fun in the Mickey Jo P. Landscape.
Mickey Jo
So is that a switch or a shift?
Aaron James
It's kind of more of a shift, I think, but I think it's a very expanded and more nuanced shift. I think it's like it's a 2026 let go of strict boundaries. But also.
Raj

Aaron James
Change what I do.
Mickey Jo
What's the next one?
Aaron James
So the next one is to see.
Mickey Jo
Theatre in a new country. I nearly wrote this down and then I thought that you probably would now.
Aaron James
This was from me. I did. You're funny. Because you'll be like, thank you.
Noah
Oh, what?
Aaron James
Last year, because we basically saw a lot of theatre on ships.
Mickey Jo
Oh, you counted the ships?
Aaron James
So. So we saw theatre on.
Mickey Jo
On the Disney Cruise line.
Aaron James
Two different Disney cruise lines, but they were in international waters and technically in the Bah and in Norway.
Mickey Jo
I, I said they could be called international waters. I said we can't say we've seen theatre in Norway. That didn't.
Aaron James
Well, I'd never seen theatre in international waters at this point. So where we were moving.
Mickey Jo
Where we were moving.
Aaron James
Yeah, cruise ship. And we'd have passports, but we never moved. Okay. But was.
Mickey Jo
Had we? Oh no, we'd seen six in Amsterdam.
Aaron James
Yeah, we'd seen there. And in Germany I did a lot of new international cities and states. So like I felt like 20, 25. I saw a lot of theater in new places I'd never been to before. I saw a musical in Dutch for the first time.
Mickey Jo
New language.
Aaron James
New language. New language.
Mickey Jo
We have achieved new country technically.
Aaron James
So I'd seen a theater and education production in Spain before.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
But I'd never seen.
Mickey Jo
We got back yesterday from a weekend in Madrid seeing four musicals. So we like really thoroughly have seen theatre.
Aaron James
And I'd never seen a musical in Spanish before. So. Yeah, Also different language.
Mickey Jo
That feels like an achievement. Enough of that. So it would be pointless to make theatre in a new country. The goal of.
Aaron James
Yeah, and I was gonna. At first my thing was like to set a kind of a number of countries to have seen it in. But it's Interesting, because I feel like, again, I was thinking about numbers and I was like, oh, I can probably count up to this high already and predict it. So I was kind of opening this to both of us. Of. Do we set something similarly or do we just put, like, an open goal?
Mickey Jo
I think it's about the shows, it's not about the places.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
That being said, I also don't want to, like, try and motivate. I like as much international travel as possible for the sake of it. I agree from an environmental perspective and everything that being said, and this is going to fly completely in the face of that, I think we could be bold. And if these are, like, big goals, we've said a lot of achievable things so far. I think we could put some big dreams on there. What about theatre on a new continent this year? There are. Yeah, there are a few. There are two obvious ones. Well, three possibly, that I haven't done yet. You've only done Europe and North America.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
Australia is the one that we say every year, there's so much theater there. There are a lot of Australians who watch these videos. There is every reason for us to go. And maybe this is the year that that happens. I never know this. It could be. I'm waiting for the right moment, waiting for the stars to align, as it were. But also, I've started to get really tempted. I've just got really into Korean food and I really want to go.
Aaron James
South Korea has such a. Such a large theater. Theater industry and district, and we're seeing new musicals. Well, this is the thing we're seeing, like, maybe happy ending and the success of it. And this weekend has really, like, made me aware of, like, the connections we have with international theater content creators of kind of people doing similar things in different countries. And when we visited Germany and the Netherlands and Canada and be coming and learning more about different cultures and how different theaters are and then feeling better when we talk about it, that we're mindful of how things are different. Yeah, we have three more.
Mickey Jo
Oh, we have three more. Okay.
Aaron James
So first one was to support more new British musicals via BEAM workshops, etc, because BEAM was that year.
Mickey Jo
So that's why I think we still continue to do.
Aaron James
I would like to continue that one. And there's musicals. I'm already excited about this year.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
A new writing. And I think it's so. I think it's still so important and I feel like I want to further develop the. No, I don't know, just further develop those links with helping shows develop here's.
Mickey Jo
My thing, because I want to kind of refine and figure out what I can offer new musicals in development, because it's not a review at that stage and that's not what I'm invited to do. But often we're invited to workshops, sometimes public or private, and I share private feedback, thoughts, whatever. I want there to be something more substantial I can do in terms of using an online platform. We can both do this to help to build, because developing the material is one thing, building the brand early is another. And I say this to writers and producers all the time. It's never too early to start building the brand of that show so that by the time it arrives in a big theater with a lot of tickets to sell, without necessarily name recognition, there's already an awareness at the very least of what it is people already have. Like theatre fans, at the very least know what to expect with that. And so figuring out how we can champion and bring awareness to new musicals as they are developing, not with a review, but with something that spotlights.
Aaron James
Yeah. And I've always said about, like, wanting people to be better aware of writers.
Grow Therapy Advertiser
Yeah.
Aaron James
In the uk, and I think we're seeing that in general with Two Strangers and Operation Mincemeat going to the US and more awareness of our writers and not just American musical theater writers. Heavy Athena said. Also, like, if making more aware of, like, the path of a new musical and where it goes off West End, Off Broadway and making people aware that those theaters are the places you need to go.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
That's also something I'd like to get better at.
Mickey Jo
I have a little thing, just because I'm not sure there'll be space to talk about this anywhere else. I want to make sure that I'm still using my voice for advocacy. I think we're living in a global moment that demands that. I think it's more important than ever before and not just in a reactive way. I think the stakes were lower earlier in my YouTube career because I didn't know these producers, I didn't know these people. There were fewer ramifications for me speaking boldly about something, for calling something out. And now there are things that happened this year and I thought, I'm gonna wait for the journalists to do their journalism about it because there is proper procedure to go through that I probably wasn't honouring in the early days of social media. And so without putting myself at risk legally, I want to make sure that I'm still talking about the things that I think are important and not Just becoming a mouthpiece for commercial theatre. That's not what I want to be. And so I want to make sure that I continue to do that.
Aaron James
So this was one of yours.
Mickey Jo
Oh, see a show in one new U.S. state.
Aaron James
Yeah. You did that?
Mickey Jo
I thoroughly did that. The San Diego trip was amazing. The Chicago trip, Illinois. Amazing to see these incredible theatre districts, these different theatre.
Aaron James
That's not just Massachusetts.
Mickey Jo
Massachusetts was another one. Art is such an institution. It was great to finally get to go there. And it makes it easier in each case for us to. Then every time we go somewhere new and really discover it, the first trip is always something of an exploration. And then it's like we're aware. I now know. I've been checking in with what Paramount Theatre in Aurora, Illinois just announced for their next season. I'm like, oh, if the dates align, I don't know that it's somewhere necessarily that we'd like specifically fly just to there. But on a trip, when we're going somewhere, if there's a chance to make that a part of it, then that's something fun to be able to do.
Aaron James
It's nice, too. I enjoyed going to art and Chicago Shakes and stuff and go. These are the places where American musicals are created regionally and go to Broadway and learning which shows start their lives there. And I think that was really appreciated because I'm so aware of that here and what those theaters are and understanding. Like when you see a show that's come from the Almeida, you know, the wall of a rounded wall and you can see things that as the benchmark that was. You can feel the DNA of the.
Mickey Jo
Theater where it was birthed.
Aaron James
Yeah. And I think I want to get a better. I enjoyed having a better understanding of the spaces.
Mickey Jo
Yes.
Aaron James
That are creating shows.
Mickey Jo
Yes.
Aaron James
I like that element of it. Whereas. Well, like, if I'm looking forward on this, I feel like it was very much achieved. I felt like more US States feels like not really.
Mickey Jo
It's not something we want to push ourselves to do right now in the current landscape for a whole handful of reasons. So we did it. Shifting to something. Is there anything else that you would like to bring in? Any other resolutions?
Aaron James
I had a list of all the musicals that ever won a Tony or an Olivier and Montau won both. And I. Therefore, there's so many musicals in canon, no way can you watch every single one. But what I would like to do for Mindfeet and Knowledge and History is if there's predictions of a show that won the Tony for Best New Musical or the Olivier for best new musical or revival. Either way, to try and see as many of those as I can to then learn why did they win it.
Mickey Jo
That's a great. That's a great sort of. If to just at least break the back of the canon and try and make sure that you are expanding your general musical theatre knowledge. To use the. Those Tony winners, Olivia winners as waypoints is brilliant.
Aaron James
Yeah. Because you kind of go not. Not like a spent a judge. Do they deserve it? But it's a good way of understanding all the years and because some of those ones I didn't win but then got afterwards. So it's exciting too.
Mickey Jo
But I think it was like Two Gentlemen of Verona, a musical.
Aaron James
There's some rogue Follies.
Mickey Jo
And I for years have always gone like, how did that happen? But now I need to know what the hell that was. Our friend Kate Ranking, who is always a great one for theater goals for a new year and reflecting, has been doing a challenge of listening to two new musical theater cast recordings every single week, which is another great thing to aspire.
Aaron James
Yeah, I think. I think my overall goal is like, separate from do the homework. It's not. I think for me, my focus is like, if we. If I'm also doing the homework, that's. I'd like to do that. But my brain has been very on like theatre education of like get understanding better where these shows were created and the spaces where they come from and honoring and bigging up the producing house theaters, but also learning more about the musicals that have come before because I'm very. I feel like I focus a lot on new and what's happening, but also I kind of want to understand more about those shows that maybe I don't have that I've never learned about. Although we're only been in America or been in the UK and just get to know him a bit more.
Noah
Yeah.
Aaron James
And then this was Mickey's final one, which he achieved very well. To see more plays. I think you shouldn't put this one on again because we both did it very well. We've already done it very well this year.
Mickey Jo
I have such regret about the order in which we've done this because I have another resolution I would like to bring in, but I didn't want it to be the last, most impactful one.
Aaron James
So his one from last year was to see more plays and you did that a lot. We. I. We both did that a lot. I come. I started last year with a play. I've already started this year with a play. And both were Shakespeare.
Mickey Jo
But the first few shows of the year were almost all.
Aaron James
All classics.
Mickey Jo
Yeah, all plays and classics. I think what really indicates a job well done on that last year is not just the number of plays that I reviewed, it's the quality of plays. Taking a look at my roundup of my best shows of last year, it was very play heavy. There were great plays last year and.
Aaron James
I was really happy because I feel like broke into kind of.

Mickey Jo
Love you.
Aaron James
Understanding more plays better. And like, obviously we lean more musical theatre. So it's good to kind of. It's kind of good to equal the balance of saying, we also like playlists.
Mickey Jo
Yeah. And musical theatre is the door we walked through to get into theatre going in the first place.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
That's what brought us here.
Aaron James
Yeah. And it's good to see a breadth of stuff. I mean, there's so many of the classics. I feel like I like that naive is some of the classics that I can go, oh, I know what that is.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
Like when you hear people talk, especially, I guess, in some. So, like when you're there, when there's lots of Critics and stuff. And they're talking about, like, it feels.
Mickey Jo
More important in British theatre circles to have seen of the great plays or.
Aaron James
To at least know them like the back of your hand or know the playwrights. Because I think, especially in the uk, playwrights, like, are heralded a lot more than musical theater is really here, which is a bit the opposite to America, where the musical theatre writers are really well known. Yeah. So that's why I've always been a bit like, pick up a new musical theater and writers and be aware.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
But at the same time, I'm glad that I've seen my first ace born. Like, I've seen, like, been. Been seeing new things. Like, John Proctor is the villain. When we're on Broadway, we could quantify.
Mickey Jo
Like, a number of new Shakespeares, but I don't think, you know, I. I.
Aaron James
Don'T know, I kind of feel like we. We're both. We watch so much so we watch so many plays and we've both kind of just actively been like, this is exciting or this is happening and trying to see more of the seasons. But I just think we're naturally gonna do it.
Mickey Jo
I think we've got there and the theatres that we're going to and the stuff that we're engaging with. I think if there was any kind of an imbalance with plays and musicals that it's been addressed.
Aaron James
Yes, I think so.
Mickey Jo
And we're doing a better job of being more well rounded.
Aaron James
Yeah.
Mickey Jo
So this is going to be a switch for a completely different resolution.
Aaron James
Is this just a Mickey resolution? I feel like I need to think of an Erin resolution.
Mickey Jo
This is a horrible note to end it on.
Aaron James
I.
Mickey Jo
Just. The bullet point I've written on my phone is more photos of me. And I will explain to go from Seymour Blaze to More Me. I for a long time. There's reasons I, for a long time, like, habitually took photos outside of. Even, like, at the beginning of last year, I was doing this and then it just really fell off. I will almost always try and come up with a nice themed stylish outfit that makes me feel good to go to the theatre in. And I don't always document all of these. And so I wanted to ask you to take more pictures of me and my nice clothes outside of the theatre.
Aaron James
More.
Mickey Jo
It's hard because theatre going is the thing that we film trips and tell our families about. It's the thing we look back on photos to be like, oh, yeah, when we saw that. It's hard to. Other than tickets and programs, which We've done a great job of organizing. These are now alphabetized, the ones you're seeing behind us here. It's hard to not have souvenirs as such memories to look back on. So I. I do want more photos of us at the theater and going to the theater and trying to capture what is inherently this sort of ephemeral thing.
Aaron James
I think we're kind of starting to do that just in the process of even we vlog more.
Mickey Jo
That's. That's a great one. Yeah.
Aaron James
We're vlogging more in the, like the UK and sharing things more. And I guess my, like. I guess we could put that as like the intersection of maybe both of us together. Which mine would be more videos than me.
Mickey Jo
Yeah.
Aaron James
Photos, sure. I think like me, like, I don't normally ask for any places. Yeah. I think. I think a bit I shied away from like being on camera more because I used to be all the time. Like when I was a bit younger, when I first started in content creation. Creationist of hope. Be like on stuff. Then in the vlogs always like on unhappy. But I think I just like got a bit like on doubting my speaking and voice and what to create and overthinking it. So mine's kind of linked to being like, create more content where I'm talking about maybe the things I'm feeling about or find a way to share it more when I have those ideas of things to talk about and just throw stuff out rather than maybe relying so much on creating content of the theater. Because I'll post a grid. I'll post like I'll get content of things and battles and performances. Yeah. And I think to get more used to recording like voiceover clips or vlogging where like doing a real vlog or talking about things and just kind of add that in. It's tricky. I didn't think that's a great idea. That's. That was kind of my theater content one of last year. But I wanted to really. I want to try and really focus on that side and maybe figuring out more or playing out like who Aaron James is.
Mickey Jo
I want more photos as well. Nice clothes.
Noah
Ah.
Mickey Jo
There was some lovely ideas in there. Just. Just closed with that really narcissistic final note from me.
Aaron James
I think. I think it's also. I think it's a good one though, because I think you spend a lot of time like thinking everything through and then you don't always let yourself.
Mickey Jo
I'm. Sometimes I wear very uncomfortable shoes to these things. What am I doing it for if I'm only vlogging from the sternum up. So more. More portrait orientation images. Anyway, those have been, I think some really great.
Aaron James
I think so. Plans and resolutions for 2026 and for our second year. This has been a nice way of reflecting and.
Mickey Jo
And there are fewer instances this year of things we already secretly know that we're going to do.
Aaron James
Yeah. Because we, we easily could have said stuff that we already know which would have a hinted and given everything away to you, but also would have felt like cheating. Yeah.
Mickey Jo
So these are genuinely things we're going to have to strive for and work for and stay tuned for the rest of this year to see if we manage it here on YouTube. But you can also stay up to date with everything that I'm sharing across platforms on Substack. Yes, it's free Aaron's channels as well on Instagram, on TikTok. Follow us wherever you can find us. I'll put all of the links in the description of this. But what we really want to know is what your goals and resolutions are for 2026. Obviously ours are sort of half theatre going, half like professional content creation, critiquing, whatever else it is that we're doing. But what are you. What do you want to get done? What are your hopes and plans for the year? Have a think and share them with us in the comments down below and let's have a chat about it in the meantime. Thank you so much for listening to this. Finally getting around to do it before the of January ends. And listen, resolutions are for life, not just for January. As always, hope that you enjoyed, make sure to subscribe.
