Narrator
Here's adventure, here's romance. Here's the famous Robin Hood of the old West.
Pancho
He's close. He's Yay. He is getting closer.
Narrator
The cisco here. Old kid in our exciting story. A medal for marksmanship. In many of the frontier towns in the early days of our west, crime flourished. There were rustlers, gunslingers and gamblers in abundance. There were also the so called respectable men whose greed had eaten away their honor until all that was left was
Cisco Kid
the core of self gain.
Narrator
One such man was Carl Munro, who with his partner Chris Mitchell, owned the
Cisco Kid
Fair Friday gold mine.
Narrator
As our story opens, Carl is sitting
Cisco Kid
at the desk in his home with
Narrator
Wilder Cooper plotting the destruction of his gold mine and his partner.
Carl Monroe
All right, Wilder, I think that about finishes the sketch of the Fair Friday mine office. And the mine shaft Is that red
Wilder Cooper
square the safe call?
Carl Monroe
That's right. And these little green dots are where the dynamite is to be placed in the shaft. I think the explanation I've written on the bottom of the drawing is clear.
Wilder Cooper
It's clear if this yokel you're hiring can read.
Carl Monroe
No need to worry about that. He's one of the cleverest gunslingers and safecrackers in the West.
Wilder Cooper
Where'd you hear about him?
Carl Monroe
All through a connection.
Wilder Cooper
What's his name?
Cisco Kid
Who knows?
Carl Monroe
He's got as many aliases as a porcupine has quills. I contacted him under the name Adobe Johnson. But he may use another name when you meet him.
Wilder Cooper
Then how am I going to know who to give these drawings to if I can't be sure of his name?
Carl Monroe
Oh, that'd be fairly simple. Remember the silver marksmanship medal I used to carry?
Wilder Cooper
Sure. It had eight sides, octagon shaped.
Carl Monroe
Well, this connection I spoke of gave it to Dobie.
Cisco Kid
He used to be wearing it when you meet him.
Wilder Cooper
Where am I supposed to meet him?
Carl Monroe
At the box supper social being held at the school tonight.
Wilder Cooper
You mean I see this Dobie wearing that gun medal and walk up and give him the plans of the mine?
Carl Monroe
No, no. You were to say nothing to him about any plans.
Wilder Cooper
Then how'll he know I have him?
Carl Monroe
Because you're going to have the most unique box supper at the social. The plans will Be hidden in a sandwich.
Wilder Cooper
Yeah, but somebody else might bid for that box supper.
Carl Monroe
Not if you go up to Doby and tell him to bid for it. You'll be acting like all the other young girls trying to get a bowl.
Wilder Cooper
You know, I gotta hand it to you, Carl.
Cisco Kid
Yeah?
Wilder Cooper
This way. That partner of yours, Chris, will never suspect that you had a hand in blowing up the mine.
Carl Monroe
I have to be careful. Doby knows who I am, but I can't afford to have him come to me. Chris has been suspicious of me for some time.
Wilder Cooper
Has he caught on that you've been digging out the gold from that second shaft you made?
Carl Monroe
The ore is almost gone from that shaft. And before Chris does discover it, I want the safe, rug and the whole
Cisco Kid
mine blown to bits.
Wilder Cooper
And you're having this Dobie Johnson, or whatever his name is, do it so that Chris will blame it on an outsider, huh?
Carl Monroe
You catch on fast, Wilder. By the way, you get paid for this job after you've kept your date with Dobie.
Wilder Cooper
And Dobie gets paid after he's done the dynamiting.
Carl Monroe
I take care of my debts, Wilder. If the job's well done, it's in cash. If there's a double cross, it's in bullets.
Pancho
Pancho. Hope we get some rest when we
Cisco Kid
get to Orville, Cisco. I think we will, Pancho. Why are you tired? After the troubles we got put in
Pancho
that hombre in the jail back in Greystone. And Pancho got the right to be tired.
Cisco Kid
That coyote gave us a hard fight, Cisco.
Pancho
Ever find out the real name of the Maverick?
Cisco Kid
No, Pancho. He's gone under many names.
Pancho
Many? How many? How many?
Cisco Kid
Oh, I do not know.
Carl Monroe
All of them.
Cisco Kid
Not all. He has used the names Cargo, Brake, Bill, Brandon, Dobie Parker. Perhaps his name really is Doby Johnson. Tell the sheriff in Greystone his name.
Pancho
Dobie Johnson. And Pan hope that sheriff keep him in the jail. He a bad umbrella. Pancho almost forgot something.
Cisco Kid
What are you looking for?
Pancho
Poncho got the look.
Cisco Kid
Look.
Pancho
And Pancho pin this on his shirt.
Cisco Kid
He's a medal.
Narrator
Poncho.
Wilder Cooper
He's a medal.
Cisco Kid
A marksmanship medal for fast draw and accurate aim. Where did you get a marksmanship medal? Pancho?
Pancho
After Cisco and Adobe have defied Pancho. Find it?
Cisco Kid
Oh, it may have belonged to Dobby. You should have turned it over to the sheriff.
Pancho
Pancho means. But Pancho
Cisco Kid
8 Chico is eight sided. That shape is called an octagon.
Pancho
Octagon. Octagon. She's so full, Pancho. She's got so fancy that the things were leaving the ocean.
Cisco Kid
You are thinking of octopus, Chico.
Pancho
Octopus.
Cisco Kid
The medal is an octagon.
Pancho
Me shave Harley and orbital thing. Pine to a dead child is punched to a ready medal.
Cisco Kid
Let us hope Sheriff Hadley has nothing for us to do and that you do not have to prove it.
Pancho
Punch not have to prove it. Sheriff Hadley writing a letter for 6 Queen Castle to come to the box rubber sociable tonight. No.
Cisco Kid
See Chico, the only trouble you will have tonight at the Sociable is a stomach ache from eating too much. Sure, I'm glad you and Poncho could
Carl Monroe
come to the sociable, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
Always lots of goodies at these box uppers. Have you picked out the senorita you want to eat with yet?
Pancho
Poncho Cheese do not know nothing about box sobers. Do not think I the Sangrita, Cisco. You pick out the super box and the Sangrita will bring the plain and sober box bring the best clothes. Is she so busy coping? Is she not got time to make it with?
Cisco Kid
Hey, Poncho.
Wilder Cooper
Huh?
Cisco Kid
That girl over there has been eyeing you for the last five minutes. Me see Poncho and she is coming this way. That's a pretty thing.
Pancho
Either she ain't that coming. She fine.
Cisco Kid
She looking for somebody else.
Wilder Cooper
I've been noticing that medal you're wearing.
Pancho
You like this medal? It's Octagon.
Wilder Cooper
It's the machine
Pancho
I'd like to have
Wilder Cooper
you bid on the supper I prepared. It's that plain supper box.
Cisco Kid
The plain supper box.
Wilder Cooper
I didn't have time to make it fancy like the others.
Pancho
The plain supper box.
Cisco Kid
Well, that's different.
Wilder Cooper
You call yourself Funcho?
Pancho
Uh huh.
Wilder Cooper
My name's Wilder.
Pancho
Buenosal is a wielder.
Wilder Cooper
Don't forget now. The plain one.
Pancho
The plain one.
Wilder Cooper
I'm sure you'll find everything you're looking for inside.
Carl Monroe
Who is it? Carl Monroe? Yes, who are you?
Cisco Kid
Johnson let me in.
Carl Monroe
You were told not to contact me. What are you doing here? I couldn't make it to the box supper. Got into some trouble today. What kind of trouble? I got thrown into jail back in Greystone. How'd you get out?
Cisco Kid
Kill the sheriff?
Carl Monroe
Oh, you're local. Why did you come here? I need the money. You're gonna pay me very well. When Wilder comes back with the sketches of the mine, you can have them. And we'll go through the deal for 5,000. That was the original agreement. All right. The hombre that's on your trail must be pretty tough for a man like you to be scared, Doobie.
Cisco Kid
Who is he? The Cisco Kid?
Carl Monroe
The Cisco Kid. I don't blame you for wanting to get out of this territory. That must be Wilder now. Yes.
Cisco Kid
In case you ain't out hide behind this door.
Carl Monroe
She'd be surprised to find you here. That you, Wilder?
Wilder Cooper
Yes, pal. I came to collect You.
Carl Monroe
What?
Wilder Cooper
I came to get my money for delivering the plans.
Carl Monroe
Who'd you give those plans to?
Wilder Cooper
I gave them to the gent who was wearing that marksmanship medal of yours. Only tonight he wasn't calling himself Dobie Johnson. Said his name was Poncho.
Carl Monroe
Pancho. Who's this Dobie Johnson?
Wilder Cooper
Then who was Poncho?
Carl Monroe
Pancho's my partner. And a Cisco Kid. How did he get that medal, Dobie? I don't know. When Cisco took me, we had a fight. I must have dropped. You blundering idiot. Did Poncho keep the plan?
Wilder Cooper
Yeah, he sneaked him out of the sandwich and put him in his pocket.
Carl Monroe
Did you say anything to Poncho about them?
Wilder Cooper
Not a thing.
Pancho
You told me not to.
Carl Monroe
Then it might not be too late.
Wilder Cooper
They might be staying with the sheriff. They came to supper with him.
Carl Monroe
We can check. And if they are, I can gun them down through a window. That still wouldn't get rid of those plans. And if the sheriff found them, he might recognize the drawing of the mine. We could set fire to the place. That's not sure enough. They might be able to put the fire out.
Wilder Cooper
Well, the fire's not sure what is.
Carl Monroe
Dynamite. The plans. The sheriff, the Cisco Kid and Poncho will end up in a million pieces.
Cisco Kid
You look sad, Chico. What is the matter? Is hungry. You're hungry. You're just coming from a box supper and you're hungry. What? Poncho, you told Sheriff Hadley and me to pick a plain supper box because it had the best food.
Pancho
Yeah, but Fango tells you wrong wish. Now you pick a pretty supper box that St. Eddie will not know how
Carl Monroe
to cook at all.
Cisco Kid
Well, look to me like she picked some nice sandwiches.
Pancho
Pancho not to eat the sandwich.
Cisco Kid
It must have been tasteless if you could not eat it. Pancho. What was it filled with? Paper.
Pancho
Paper in Pancho. Look at it. It looked like a map.
Cisco Kid
A map?
Pancho
Uh huh.
Cisco Kid
That is very strange. Do you still have the paper, Pancho?
Pancho
See Pancho sneaky from the sandwich when the saint eaten out.
Cisco Kid
Look, Pancho thinks he in the pocket. Here's my house now. Cisco, let's go inside and take a look at it. See you, Sheriff.
Pancho
Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up.
Cisco Kid
Tell me, Sheriff Tom, do you know the Sen. Wilder. That Poncho ate with?
Carl Monroe
Nope, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
Can't recollect. It'll do, Pancho.
Pancho
Parson either.
Cisco Kid
Go on in now. Turn up the lantern. There. Now we can see. Cisco, let's have a look at that map. See? It is a map. Do you recognize this place, Sheriff? Not without studying it. A mic. That writing down at the bottom of the page, Cisco, it says, red box is the safe. The green dots are where the dynamite is to be placed.
Pancho
Somebody blows something up, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
Seems these are plans for a robbery of some kind, Pancho. Yeah, can't quite figure it out. This drone looks familiar, though.
Pancho
Pancho. Think he hears something, Cisco?
Cisco Kid
Probably the horses. I'll put him in the barn for the night.
Pancho
I'm fine to do that for you, Senor Sherry.
Cisco Kid
Oh, thanks, Pancho. After you bed down the horses for the night, look around outside, Pancho. That Senorita Wilder may try to reclaim this map. And I'm sure she will not do it alone. We gotta figure out what's gonna be dynamited, Cisco. Maybe we can stop it before it's too late.
Wilder Cooper
Look, Carl. Through that window. There's the sheriff and Cisco. And the reading center.
Carl Monroe
The plans. Ready with that dynamite, Dobby?
Cisco Kid
I got it in my hand.
Carl Monroe
Carl, strike a match. When the fuse is lit, heave the stick right through that window. When I throw it, start running. That blast could be the end of us too.
Wilder Cooper
Hurry, there's someone coming.
Carl Monroe
Yeah, here's the light. The fuse is lit. Now throw. Yeah, I'll throw it right through the window.
Pancho
Dynamite. You both be killed.
Narrator
And even if Cisco hears Poncho's warning, it is not likely he and the sheriff can escape in time. In just a moment, we'll return to the Cisco Kid. And now back to the Cisco Kid in our gripping story, A Medal for Marksmanship. In an effort to rid himself of
Cisco Kid
the partner he had been cheating, Carl
Narrator
Monroe employed Wilder, Cooper and the killer, Dobie Johnson. The plans to murder Carl's partner, Chris Mitchell, inadvertently fell into the hands of Cisco and Pancho, who are the guests of Sheriff Tom Hadley. When Carl learned that the plans had gone astray, he, Wilder and Dobie set out to dynamite the sheriff's house and kill the sheriff, Sisco and Poncho. However, Poncho was outside the house and shouted a warning to Cisco just at the moment the dynamite was thrown.
Carl Monroe
Now.
Pancho
It'll explode out of here. Fix it right on the door. I can't,
Cisco Kid
Santos.
Carl Monroe
That was close.
Cisco Kid
Oh, sure gave it a mighty heap, Cisco. Lucky it landed in the middle of that empty quell didn't hurt a thing, Cisco.
Pancho
Say you, Sheriff.
Cisco Kid
You all right, amigo?
Carl Monroe
Gracias to you.
Cisco Kid
I was quick thinking on your part, Pancho. You saved our lives. Yeah. Did you see who threw it?
Pancho
He's that bandido with all the names. The ones you say call himself Dobby.
Cisco Kid
Dobie Johnson.
Pancho
Uh huh.
Cisco Kid
I wonder how he got out of the jail at Greystone. Jail at Gravestone. I see. We put Dobie in jail there before we came to visit you. He must have escaped. Yeah, well, the only way he could have escaped from Sheriff Howard is stabbed. Killed him. We'll find out about that. Also. Was there anyone else with Dobie? Poncho? He two other hombles.
Carl Monroe
Only one of them that Sandy the Wilder.
Pancho
What part you eat with?
Cisco Kid
Yeah, and the other one should. I can see his face. I have an idea.
Carl Monroe
Poncho.
Cisco Kid
Let me see that matter you picked up when Dobie and I had the fight.
Pancho
Please. Hiscount unfinished.
Cisco Kid
Yes, he demanded of course. Why didn't I think of that? That girl Wilder was interested in that medal and Dobie had it originally.
Pancho
What's this? Good thing he find on the medal.
Cisco Kid
Perhaps a clue as to who was the other hombre that you saw, Poncho. Yeah.
Carl Monroe
There's a couple of initials on the back of the medal, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
Bloody initials.
Pancho
What initials?
Wilder Cooper
What, what, what?
Cisco Kid
What? They are C.M. c.M. You know anyone with those initial, Sheriff Tom? Well, offhand I don't recollect. Wait a minute. There's Charlie Morgan, Chris Mitchell. Oh yeah. His partner, Carl Monroe. We will check on each of them. Let's take a look at that map again that Poncho found.
Pancho
What do you think he find there?
Cisco Kid
I thought this layout was familiar. It's a Fair Friday Mine office and the main shaft of the mine. Who owns the Fair Friday Mine, Sheriff? Well, by thunder. Both partners that own it have the initial CM Carl Monroe and Chris Mitchell.
Pancho
But which one of them helped through the dynamite?
Cisco Kid
I have an idea that it was the same one that drew this map. Sheriff, let us ride out to the Fair Friday Mine. If we get there in time, we can prevent a murder.
Carl Monroe
How much rally to the Fair Friday Mine, Carl? Oh, just up the road a piece.
Pancho
Doby, are you sure that partner of
Wilder Cooper
yours, Chris Mitchell is at the mine?
Carl Monroe
Chris is there all right. Wilder. We're making a gold shipment tomorrow. He's sleeping there tonight to guard it. How do you figure? I'm blaming him for dynamiting the sheriff in, Cisco. Oh, I'm sure Sheriff Hadley has recognized the Sketch I made of the mine.
Wilder Cooper
Then Cisco Ponceau and the sheriff will be out to the mine after.
Carl Monroe
Ah, Correct. Only they won't be looking for Kyle Monroe. They'll be out to get Chris Mitchell. What makes you think that? The initials on the back of the marksmanship medal. The one you sent to me? Yeah, the one Pancho must have picked up when you and Cisco were fighting.
Wilder Cooper
Well, what about it?
Carl Monroe
Well, the initials on the back of that medal are CM they could stand for Chris Mitchell.
Wilder Cooper
Even if you can blame it all on Chris Mitchell, it still don't put Dobie and me in the clear.
Carl Monroe
Chris Mitchell ain't gonna say the medal's his when it ain't. Chris Mitchell won't say anything.
Cisco Kid
He'll be dead.
Wilder Cooper
You gonna kill him?
Carl Monroe
I am. How come you didn't do it before?
Cisco Kid
Why'd you need me?
Carl Monroe
The circumstances have been altered by the fact that your identities are known.
Wilder Cooper
Ah. Your partner's death won't convince pistol.
Carl Monroe
With your help, it will. And in payment for that help, we'll split that gold shipment three ways.
Wilder Cooper
That's the kind of talk I like to hear. What do you want me to do?
Carl Monroe
Toby? How about you? Money's my metal. Name.
Cisco Kid
What's the setup?
Carl Monroe
When Cisco, Pancho and the sheriff show up at the mine office, I'll have a gun on you, too. I'll tell the sheriff I've been holding you for him.
Pancho
You'll do what?
Carl Monroe
I'm going to tell the sheriff that Chris rode up with you and tried to kill me, but I had to gun him down. All right, that clears you a little while.
Cisco Kid
What about us?
Carl Monroe
Well, as long as I'm not under suspicion, I'll still have my gun. And while those three are busy with
Cisco Kid
you, I'll get the drop on.
Wilder Cooper
That's quite a plan if it works.
Carl Monroe
It'll work. We'll dispose of the Sheriff, Poncho and the Cisco Kid in the same manner we dispose of Chris Mitchell.
Cisco Kid
There's the Fair Friday mine office right up ahead.
Pancho
Ciso, I just see a light. In that order. So you should have.
Cisco Kid
It may be that the man we are after is expecting us. Well, looks like you're right, Cisco. Could easily be a trap.
Pancho
Do not walk into the trap.
Cisco Kid
No, I do not think it is a trap. If it were, they would have hidden their horses and put the light out. They would have tried to drag us.
Carl Monroe
Well, we'll find out soon enough. Who's out there?
Pancho
Whose voice is that?
Carl Monroe
Sheriff?
Cisco Kid
Tom? I don't know.
Pancho
That's one of the Homies what might own the medal.
Cisco Kid
No, it's Sheriff Hadley.
Carl Monroe
Monroe.
Cisco Kid
We're coming in.
Carl Monroe
Lucky for me it is you. Sheriff. I got a couple of prisoners in here for you. Santos.
Cisco Kid
Where's that dead hombre on the floor my der. He shot through the head. It's Chris Mitchell. You direct calm?
Carl Monroe
Yes, I did, Sheriff. But before you jump to any conclusions, hear me out. I'm listening. Chris Mitchell rode up here like a wild man with this other gent and the girl. Talked about a dynamiting and threatened to kill me. I was lucky I beat him to the draw.
Pancho
To tell the truth, he's gone. Dobie Johnson in the finger outside the sheriff's house.
Cisco Kid
You Doby Johnson? How did you get away from Sheriff Howard back at Greystone? I got wings, Cisco. I flew through the bar.
Wilder Cooper
I guess there's no use. Hold them out. I was paid to get those plans for dynamite and the mind into Dobie's hands.
Cisco Kid
But you made sure that Poncho got them instead.
Wilder Cooper
That was a mistake. He was wearing the shooting medal that was supposed to identify Dobie.
Cisco Kid
Poncho picked up that medal after you and I had that fight in Greystone. Dobie, where did you get it? Where do you think?
Carl Monroe
From Creek Metro.
Cisco Kid
That settled it. Guess I'd better get Dobby's gun. Take these two back to jail.
Pancho
Pancho. Get that gun for you, Senor Sheridan.
Cisco Kid
Pancho, before you do anything. Senor Sheriff Dobe and the senorita are not the only two you want. What do you mean, Cisco? That Senor Car is lying.
Carl Monroe
That's a foolish thing to say, Cisco, about a man who's holding a gun on you. You'd better be able to prove it.
Cisco Kid
I can. Homie, you said you beat Chris Mitchell to the draw.
Carl Monroe
That's right.
Pancho
He did.
Wilder Cooper
We witnessed it.
Cisco Kid
You are all lying. This Mitchell was supposed to have won that medal for a fast draw and accurate marksmanship. Yet you were able to beat him. I say that the initial CM on the back of that medal do not stand for Chris Mitchell. They stand for Carl Munro. By George, you're right, Cisco. Hey, Cisco.
Pancho
Smiling good old Ban umbrio.
Carl Monroe
You are smart, Cisco. Smarter than I give you credit for. But what good's it going to do you when the muzzle of my six shooter's pointed at the middle of your forehead while yours is still in your wholesale? You have smarted yourself this time, Cisco. Sheriff.
Cisco Kid
Pancho, get out of the way. Keep your eyes on that Dobby hombre in the senorita.
Pancho
What you do, Cisco?
Cisco Kid
What'd you do?
Pancho
What'd you do?
Cisco Kid
Monroe? Since the medal is yours, there is no doubt you are fast with the six gun. But from the hands of that clock, point to four. I am going to draw on you anyway. You are going to jail, dead or alive.
Pancho
Don't let him get away. Help the sheriff, Poncho.
Cisco Kid
I have a rock corner.
Pancho
Fine. To help the sheriff. Stop your.
Carl Monroe
You think they're going to keep me here, Cisco?
Cisco Kid
See, Monroe? That is what I'm going to do. Oh, my arm.
Carl Monroe
Ah, that bullet found you, Cisco. Maybe I should have told you I caught the reflection of the moon on your gun barrel. How does that arm feel?
Cisco Kid
It's only a flesh wound, you coyote. I still have the other hand and I can use these guns.
Carl Monroe
Not very well, Cisco. How can you shoot me when you can't see me?
Cisco Kid
You missed, hombre. You have only three bullets left in that gun.
Carl Monroe
And each one's got your name on it. Fisco.
Cisco Kid
Only two left, Monroe. That was a book I tossed in the corner. You will not add another murder to your score to life.
Carl Monroe
Blast you, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
I'll kill you another. Ms. Fontido. Is this how you won that medal for marksmanship? And that was your last shot, you coyote. Now I'm coming after you.
Pancho
I'll break this gun barrel over your head to coat.
Cisco Kid
Not what I can still.
Pancho
And the left. Oh, and another.
Narrator
Your job.
Pancho
Now get it. What have you. No more.
Carl Monroe
No more.
Cisco Kid
Four o'.
Wilder Cooper
Clock.
Cisco Kid
I told you, hombre, you would be going to jail. I have kept my word, Cisco.
Pancho
Say, Poncho, Pancho and Sheriff Harley have the hard time rounding up that bandito Joby and the senorita wielder.
Cisco Kid
I know you did, Pancho. The sheriff told me about the chase. He said you finally had to trip that Dobie hombre with your bullwhip.
Pancho
I don't trip him with your bullwhip.
Cisco Kid
Well, Monroe Dobie and that will senuator will all remain behind bars for a long.
Pancho
That's Eddie the Willow. You got awful lot of Poncho.
Cisco Kid
I noticed you did it with trial when you testified.
Pancho
That's the time when Pancho Chestnut testified.
Cisco Kid
Poncho.
Pancho
That's what Poncho say, Chestnut. But that thing will not get as mad as Big Maria.
Cisco Kid
One time Big Maria was mad at you, Poncho. Mad at me?
Pancho
She very mad at Pine girls.
Cisco Kid
Well, why was she mad at you, Chico?
Pancho
That time Big Maria cooked the suburb of Pancho. And what happened when Big Maria put the salad on the table? Big Maria say, look, Pancho a buddy is wanting a salad.
Cisco Kid
What made Big Maria so mad after she said a button had fallen in the salad?
Pancho
Because panjo say panjo think that button fall off while the salad dresses. Oh fajo. Oh Cheesco.
Narrator
And so ends another exciting adventure with O. Henry's famous Robin Hood of the West, Cisco Kid. Be sure to listen again for another thrilling adventure of the Cisco Kid. Cisco Kid was played by Jack Mathers Funcho by Harry Lance.
