Welcome to the Old Time Radio Westerns. I'm your host, Andrew Rines, and I'm excited to bring you another episode absolutely free. This is one of over 80 episodes released monthly for your enjoyment. Now let's get into this episode.
Unknown Cowboy
Hio, Silver. Hawaii.
The Lone Ranger
A fiery horse with a speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty hi yo, Silver. The Lone Ranger.
Unknown Cowboy
Sam.
Betty Fraser
Sa it.
The Lone Ranger
Whenever men gathered around the campfires in the early days of the western United States, stories were told of the masked rider of the plains. And these stories have come down to us through the generations. No one could match his strength and courage, his daring or resourcefulness. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days when the west was young. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse. Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again alone.
Unknown Cowboy
Silver Feathers waiting on the trail ahead. Loud Silver away.
The Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger and Tonto were riding toward the town of Reed's Ferry when suddenly the masked man's great white stallion reared high.
Betty Fraser
Steady, old fellow.
The Lone Ranger
Steady.
Unknown Cowboy
There.
Betty Fraser
What's the trouble?
Unknown Cowboy
They'll snake you. See him?
Betty Fraser
Right. I'll get him.
The Lone Ranger
You hit him.
Betty Fraser
That fixes him, old fella.
Unknown Cowboy
Nice shooting, stranger. Get up here.
Betty Fraser
Hello.
Unknown Cowboy
Seen you coming.
Betty Fraser
And seen that mask you're wearing.
Unknown Cowboy
Whoa. Whoa, fella.
Betty Fraser
Whoa.
Jorgen
I decided it'd be safer to pull up behind them trees till you got by.
Betty Fraser
You thought I was an outlaw, huh?
Jorgen
Sure. I knew it the second I seen you.
Betty Fraser
Then why show yourself?
Jorgen
Well, you wouldn't get much off me even if you did hold me up. When I seen how neat you plugged that rattler, I figured maybe he was just the kind of fella I've been looking for. How's the engine? You pretty good with the shooting iron?
Betty Fraser
He is. Why?
Jorgen
How would the two of you like to make yourself some cash?
Betty Fraser
How?
Jorgen
Working for me.
Betty Fraser
What kind of work?
Jorgen
You ain't particular, are you?
Betty Fraser
I might be. Hey.
Jorgen
Savvy? Kind of careful, ain't you? Well, if the law's after you, I don't blame you. But you don't have to worry about me none. As long as you can shoot like you just showed me, I ain't gonna ask no questions.
Betty Fraser
But I am. I still want to know what you'd expect us to do.
Jorgen
Maybe if you knew who I was, you wouldn't be so curious.
Betty Fraser
All right. Who are you?
Jorgen
My handle's Jorgen. Ever hear me before?
Betty Fraser
I have.
Jorgen
There ain't many that haven't heard of me, I reckon. What'd you hear?
Betty Fraser
And you've set yourself up as top man in this part of the country.
Jorgen
Uh huh.
Betty Fraser
Anything else but that you ran into somebody who doesn't scare.
Jorgen
Yeah? Who's that?
Betty Fraser
Bart Fraser.
Jorgen
For a stranger, you seem to know quite a lot.
Betty Fraser
I made it my business to find out certain facts.
Jorgen
I see. What'd you have in mind? Hiring out to whichever one of us would pay your best wages.
Betty Fraser
What do you think?
Jorgen
I ain't interested in guessing. If that's what you were planning, maybe.
The Lone Ranger
I'd better give you a tip.
Betty Fraser
Yes.
Jorgen
Don't make the mistake of joining up with the losing side. Bart's as good as licked right now. Won't be long till he'll have to clear out.
Betty Fraser
And you'll take over his range, huh?
Jorgen
Sure. What I started to say was that when Bart does have to clear out, it's gonna be mighty hot for anybody that sided with him.
Betty Fraser
If he proves too much for you to handle.
Jorgen
He won't.
Betty Fraser
You've got a sizable crew.
Jorgen
He did have, you mean? But he ain't no more. When Bart come down sick, they kind of lost their nerve.
Betty Fraser
Bart's ill, you say?
Jorgen
I thought you knew what was going on here.
Betty Fraser
I heard the talk when we rode through here a month ago. But this must have happened since then.
Jorgen
I did. He ain't sick now, of course, but he's mighty feeble. Reckon his boys figured there weren't no use in fighting for somebody that wasn't able to fight for his self.
Betty Fraser
So they left him, huh?
Jorgen
Some just up and quit and some I hired away. Now what do you think? You still figure there's any chance of me losing?
Betty Fraser
I do.
Jorgen
Eh? How do you figure that?
Betty Fraser
We'll let you find out. For yourself?
Jorgen
But I just.
Betty Fraser
You see, Jorgen, you made two mistakes. In the first place, Tondo and I are not outlaws.
Jorgen
Your mask.
Betty Fraser
For reasons of my own. And in the second place, we wouldn't fight for you because we're on Bart's side.
Jorgen
Why are you.
Unknown Cowboy
He was just pumping me for information, right? You'll be sorry for this, stranger.
Betty Fraser
We'll take our chances.
Unknown Cowboy
It don't pay to cross me. And I won't be long till you're finding it out.
Betty Fraser
I said on your way.
Unknown Cowboy
You ain't giving me orders?
Sheriff Miller
No.
Betty Fraser
Then maybe this will convince you.
Unknown Cowboy
Don't shoot. I'm going. Get up there.
The Lone Ranger
Come on. Get up, boy.
Unknown Cowboy
Get up.
The Lone Ranger
Get up.
Betty Fraser
Him.
The Lone Ranger
Change mine heap fast.
Betty Fraser
The worst part of it is that there's plenty of truth in what he told us. He's got better than an even chance to drive Bart out of the district. Me not know you on Peller's side. On Bart's, huh? To tell the truth, Kimasabe, this is the first. I knew it myself. Come. We're paying a call.
Unknown Cowboy
Get him on, Scout.
Betty Fraser
Come on, Silver.
Unknown Cowboy
Hurry, old fellow.
The Lone Ranger
Bart Fraser, although on the road to recovery, was too weak for anything but the easiest work. After his evening meal, he left the table and sank into his favorite chair with relief.
Bart Fraser
Oh, gosh, honey. I'm just plum tired out.
May Fraser
You've been trying to do too much before. You're well again, Bart. You should take it easier. Here, let me put this pillow behind your back. There.
Bart Fraser
Thank you. Well, I don't know who'll do the work around here if I don't.
May Fraser
If it can't be done, it can't be, that's all. Just let it go.
Bart Fraser
You know what that'd mean.
May Fraser
I know.
Bart Fraser
I might just as well admit I'm beat.
May Fraser
Don't think that way, Bart. The minute you do, then you are beat.
Bart Fraser
Don't know what good thinking any other way would do me.
May Fraser
Can't never tell.
Bart Fraser
If I still had a crew, I'd show Jorgen a few things. Dog gone at me. The more I think of how them yellow pole cats quit just cause I was ailing, the madder I get. It was just the chance Jorgen was waiting for.
May Fraser
But what can he do?
Bart Fraser
I got a good idea.
May Fraser
What?
Bart Fraser
Go after that herd of shorthorns I bought. He knows they're purebreds and he knows I paid out more to get him than I could afford now.
May Fraser
But you're just imagining things. He couldn't steal them. Why, he'd be jailed.
Bart Fraser
Who said anything about Stealing? Of course, he couldn't take them for hisself, but he could fix it so as I'd lose him, couldn't he? Oh, why, just by scattering them through the hills. That's how I'd be lucky to get half of them back, even with a full crew to hunt him out. I know it and he knows it. And I'd be willing to bet plenty that's just what he's figuring on.
May Fraser
But they're guarded.
Bart Fraser
Who by?
May Fraser
You said you hired a cowboy the other day.
Bart Fraser
Oh, him. He's just a kid. If my crew hadn't quit, I'd never have hired him. Don't know what use he'd be in a fight.
May Fraser
Things do look bad.
Bart Fraser
If I'd only had a son to back me up. Well, I can't help feeling that way, can I?
May Fraser
Know, but you've talked about it so much. You've made poor Betty feel she wasn't wanted. I think that's why she went visiting this last time.
Bart Fraser
Where'd she go?
May Fraser
I told you. To Kate Bell's at Riverdale. Do we should try to be nicer to her? She's done everything she knew how to please you. Why, she can ride and rope and she can shoot better' n most cowboys. And she learned just because she thought it'd help to make up to you for her not being a boy. Half the time you act as though you didn't know she was alive.
Bart Fraser
That ain't so.
May Fraser
It is, Bart. You just don't realize it.
Bart Fraser
You talk like I didn't have no use for my own daughter.
May Fraser
Bart, I know you love her. It's just. Oh, I don't know how to explain it. Well, you get impatient with her. You say things like you did just now about wishing you had a son and. Well, how could she help feeling bad?
Bart Fraser
She tell you these things?
May Fraser
Of course not. But her mother knows what her daughter's thinking.
Bart Fraser
Well, if she was anxious to please me, why didn't she stay home till things got better instead of traipsing over to Kate's?
May Fraser
If you didn't want her to go, you should have told her so.
Bart Fraser
When's she coming home?
May Fraser
Been gone a week. I don't suppose she'll stay much longer.
Bart Fraser
You heard from her yet?
May Fraser
No, but she'll ride pretty soon.
Bart Fraser
Well, reckon I better turn in. Got plenty to do tomorrow. Got the pump to fix. And who's that? Didn't I hear somebody ride up?
May Fraser
Sounded like it.
Bart Fraser
Come in.
Betty Fraser
Mast. You? Don't be alarmed. I'm not an outlaw.
Bart Fraser
You're one of Jorgen's men.
Betty Fraser
I'm not. But I've talked to Jorgen, and that's why I'm here.
Bart Fraser
What do you want?
Betty Fraser
Jorgen said your crew would quit you, that you were alone.
Bart Fraser
I just about am.
Betty Fraser
But what's it to you just about when you have got someone working for you.
Bart Fraser
A kid to ride herd on my shorthorns. If you call that help. I see you ain't tell me what you're after.
Betty Fraser
I came to tell you not to give up yet. I know Jorgen wants to drive you out of the district, but don't leave.
Bart Fraser
I never intended to.
Betty Fraser
Good.
Bart Fraser
But why are you saying that?
Betty Fraser
Tato and I'll do all we can to help you.
Bart Fraser
Tanto.
Betty Fraser
An Indian friend of mine.
The Lone Ranger
But who are you?
Betty Fraser
Maybe you've heard of me and maybe you haven't. You have. And this should answer your question.
Bart Fraser
What is?
Betty Fraser
I'll see you again.
Bart Fraser
Oh, wait. Well, I never may. What was that he dropped on the table?
May Fraser
A bullet. A bullet of silver.
Betty Fraser
Look. It is silver.
Unknown Cowboy
Come, Silver.
Bart Fraser
Come on, Silver. You hear that? He called his horse silver. May, can't you guess who that hombre was? Oh, the Lone Ranger.
The Lone Ranger
Leaving Bart's ranch house, the Lone Ranger and Tonto rode to the valley where Bart's herd of shorthorns were being grazed. They spoke to the young cowboy who was guarding the herd and then made camp a short distance away.
Betty Fraser
We're at a disadvantage, Tanto. There's nothing we can do until Jorgen makes his move.
Sheriff Miller
That's right.
Betty Fraser
But I'm convinced this is the danger point. If Bart loses those shorthorns, he's beaten. I understand he not only sold most of his other cattle to get them, but mortgaged his property as well. There's something that's been bothering me. What that? Did you notice anything strange about that cowboy? We spoke to him just. Boy, there was something else.
Jorgen
Mino.
Betty Fraser
Savvy? Well, never mind. I may be wrong. The idea I had seems impossible and probably is. Anyhow, just now. We've got other things to worry about. One of us must keep an eye on Jorgen. We can't let him catch us unguarded. Me do that, will you? Good. And I'll divide my time between watching the herd and Bart's home. Just possible that Jorgen will strike there. Although I doubt it. If Jorgen's to be beaten, we can't miss a tr.
The Lone Ranger
The following day, Sheriff Miller rode from town to Bart's ranch. Bart was just leaving the house as the sheriff reined up.
Sheriff Miller
Oh, boy. Whoa. Afternoon, Bart.
Bart Fraser
Well, howdy, Sheriff. What brings you out this way?
Sheriff Miller
Well, a couple of things. Bart. Where's your wife?
Bart Fraser
Inside. Step in.
Sheriff Miller
Thanks.
Bart Fraser
Here's a chef. See you, May. I reckon you've been breaking the law again.
May Fraser
Go on with you, Bart. Howdy, dear.
Sheriff Miller
Nothing for you to worry about, ma' am. Here's a letter for you. Postmaster mentioned it, and as long as I was coming to see Bart anyhow, thought I might as well bring it along.
May Fraser
That was kind of you. Will you excuse me while I read?
Sheriff Miller
You sure.
Bart Fraser
You was coming to see me anyhow, you said?
Sheriff Miller
Yes. Bart Jorgan was into my office. He told me something I thought I'd better ask you about. Yeah? He said you'd hired a couple of crooks to work for you.
Bart Fraser
Said that, did he?
Sheriff Miller
Mm. Said one of them was masked and the other was a redskin. Nothing in it, is there?
Bart Fraser
Sure, I hired him.
Sheriff Miller
Huh.
Bart Fraser
But they ain't crooks.
Sheriff Miller
Then what?
Bart Fraser
Did you never guess who the masked fellow was in a million years, no. The Lone Ranger.
Sheriff Miller
Oh, you're local?
The Lone Ranger
Nope.
Bart Fraser
I seen one of the several bullets that fella shoots. Heard what he called his horse, too. I didn't see who was with him, but if you say it was a redskin, then it just fits in with what he told me.
Sheriff Miller
Well, I'll be dog gone.
Bart Fraser
So you can just go back and tell Jorgen he's up again. More than you think it all.
Sheriff Miller
But I'll do that. And just between the two of us.
Bart Fraser
Yes?
Sheriff Miller
If you ever get anything on Jorgan so as I can jail the coyote, just you let me know. It'll be a pleasure.
Bart Fraser
I'll do that same.
Sheriff Miller
Well, good day.
Bart Fraser
Good day.
Sheriff Miller
Good day, Mom.
Betty Fraser
Good day.
Bart Fraser
Who's the letter from? Tain't from Betty, is it? Well, honey, what's ailing you? You're acting like you just had bad news.
May Fraser
Bart. This letter is from Kate Bell.
Unknown Cowboy
Yes.
May Fraser
She wants to know if Betty can visit her.
Bart Fraser
Wants to know if you know. That's silly. You've read it wrong. Betty is visiting her.
May Fraser
Read it yourself, Bart. That's just what she says.
Bart Fraser
But I don't savvy.
May Fraser
But it means Betty ain't there. It means she never has been there.
Bart Fraser
But May I?
May Fraser
But what's become of her?
The Lone Ranger
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger story before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments. Now to continue our story. At Jorgen's ranch, his men had assembled in the bunk house to receive their Orders. Finally, Jorgen himself entered.
Sheriff Miller
He is. And we're all here, boss. What's up?
Betty Fraser
That's what I come to tell you.
Jorgen
I want you all to listen close because this is important. We listening. First off, I reckon you all know why I hired you.
Sheriff Miller
There going to be a fight?
Jorgen
I don't think so. But I've got a job for you, and it's just possible there might be. Well, in case there is, don't forget you're all drawn.
The Lone Ranger
Fighting wages.
Bart Fraser
Sure.
Jorgen
What's a germ? Well, you're gonna drive them purebred cows of Frazier's into the hills.
Sheriff Miller
That sounds easy.
Jorgen
Yeah, maybe it is and maybe it ain't. Anyhow, I want a good job done. Don't just scatter them and let it go at that. Keep after them till they spread so many different ways they can't never be found.
Betty Fraser
But ain't you going along?
Jorgen
I am. I can't be with you all at once. How about the law? Any risk there? There ain't. That's why I chose today. The sheriff's already been to Bart's place once, and he ain't likely to ride that way again. Bart himself ain't likely to be on hand. The only witness there'll be is that young cowboy he hired. Don't worry.
Sheriff Miller
We'll handle the kid.
Jorgen
Yeah, well, there's just one way to handle him.
Betty Fraser
How's that?
Jorgen
See that he can't never talk.
Betty Fraser
What?
Jorgen
Drill him just so.
Sheriff Miller
Now, look, boss. Well, we just scattered the herd then. The Lord never be able to prove any more than a stampede that happened by itself. But if there's a killing atop it, then it'll point straight to you.
Betty Fraser
What of it?
Jorgen
Well, let the law suspicion I'm behind it. Let anybody that wants to suspicion the same. But as long as it can't be proved on me, suspicions don't scare me none at all. Well, if you don't care, I reckon we don't. How about it, fellas?
The Lone Ranger
All right with me.
Jorgen
And there's nothing more needs to be said.
Betty Fraser
Saddle up.
Jorgen
We start in riding right now.
The Lone Ranger
An hour later, when the masked man rode into camp, he found Toto waiting for him.
Betty Fraser
Oh, there. Silver. Oh. What is it, Toto? What brought you back here? Jorgenpellers Ride.
The Lone Ranger
Yes, M. Stampede herd.
Betty Fraser
When? Keep soon. They're on the way. Now. I know. This is worse than I'd expected. What matter? Remember talking about that young cowboy Bart hired? That cowboy is Betty Fraser. Oh, when we talked to her, I was puzzled. Then I didn't know why now? I know it was because in spite of her disguise, she didn't handle herself as a man would.
The Lone Ranger
That heap strange.
Betty Fraser
Not so strange when you know the facts, Kimasabe. Bart was always disappointed because he had a daughter instead of a son. Betty, knowing this, taught herself all the accomplishments a boy would have mastered. She can shoot and ride and rope. When her father's crew quit him, she told her parents she was leaving to visit a friend. Instead, she disguised herself and returned her he brave. She's taking this way to prove to Barth that she can help him as much as a son would have done. This means that she's in danger of her life. How you know this? Betty told her parents she was visiting a girl named Kate. Bill. Today a letter was received which proved she'd never gone there. Then it came to me what was strange about that cowboy.
The Lone Ranger
What we do.
Betty Fraser
You're riding to town at once.
Unknown Cowboy
Yes, Count.
Betty Fraser
Get the sheriff and a posse. Bring them as quickly as you can.
The Lone Ranger
How to do it.
Betty Fraser
And in the meantime, I'll do what I can to help save the herd. Get going.
Unknown Cowboy
Get him up, Scout. Come on, Silver. Hail Silver. Away.
The Lone Ranger
Jorgen and his men reached the herd before the Lone Ranger, and here they.
Unknown Cowboy
Are just waiting for it.
Sheriff Miller
When we get through, they'll be combing shorthorns out of the hills for 10 years to come.
Unknown Cowboy
Keep your eyes peeled for that cowboy.
Jorgen
Anybody see him? Wait a second. I think I do.
Betty Fraser
Where?
Jorgen
Look over to your ride.
Betty Fraser
I know.
Sheriff Miller
Oh, there he is. And he's seen us, too. He's high, tailing for them rocks, heading for cover. Yeah, there. Hey, look at him.
Unknown Cowboy
He got off his horse.
Sheriff Miller
And he's got his rifle with him, too.
Unknown Cowboy
Don't bother with the herd till you get him. That's the first thing to be done.
Sheriff Miller
Hey, that bullet come so close, I.
Unknown Cowboy
Could hear it whiz by. That's some shooting. Watch out. We better hunt for cover ourselves, horse. We're just giving that fella good targets to shoot at. Rein up. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Find cover and fire back. Get that ombre.
The Lone Ranger
Unaware that it was a girl, not a man, who was firing so accurately, Jorgen's men sought cover and returned. Her fire at first volley left her unharmed. But it could only be a matter of moments before one of their bullets found its mark. Suddenly, a great white horse broke from COVID one side of the valley and raced toward the rocks where Betty Fraser was hidden.
Unknown Cowboy
Come on. There's that mask man. Bring him down. Let him have it, fellas. He's moving almost Too fast to e mad this. Keep firing. Empty your guns.
The Lone Ranger
Riding like the wind, the great horse silver raced within. Gunshot. Of the desperate outlaws. But his blinding speed made him a phantom figure, a difficult target. And always the lone ranger urged him on.
Unknown Cowboy
Come on, Silver. Touch all those burnt legs of yours, old fellow. Come on. Don't fire. I'm on your side. Put down that gun.
May Fraser
Oh.
Unknown Cowboy
Hold this. Over. Hold on. Hold there.
Jorgen
You're the masked man I talked to before.
Unknown Cowboy
Keep undercover.
Jorgen
You. You come to help me?
Unknown Cowboy
I did.
Betty Fraser
Betty. What? Don't waste time denying who you are.
Unknown Cowboy
Just listen to what I have to say.
Betty Fraser
Quick. You can't remain here.
Unknown Cowboy
There's too many of them, and our ammunition is limited.
Betty Fraser
If we'll leave, they'll stamped the herd. Not until they finish us off first.
Unknown Cowboy
So they'll not have witnesses.
Betty Fraser
You mean to run first? Yes.
Unknown Cowboy
My horse is slow.
Betty Fraser
We won't take your horse.
Unknown Cowboy
We'll ride double on Silver.
May Fraser
Ride double?
Jorgen
No, we'd never get away.
Unknown Cowboy
We don't want to.
Jorgen
I don't understand.
Unknown Cowboy
I've sent a friend of mine for.
Betty Fraser
The law, but it'll be an hour.
Unknown Cowboy
Before it can reach here. In the meantime, we've got to keep Jorgen after us. We'll ride just fast enough to stay.
Betty Fraser
Out of gunshot, but slowly enough so.
Unknown Cowboy
They'Ll think they still have a chance to catch us.
Betty Fraser
It can't be done here.
The Lone Ranger
Don't argue.
Betty Fraser
Just get in that saddle hip, will.
Unknown Cowboy
You, Teddy, old fellow. All right, Shelby. Come on. Come on.
The Lone Ranger
Jorgen saw the lone ranger and Betty ride away as if to escape. And they're making a break for the.
Unknown Cowboy
Heading of the valley. Get to your horses. After them. They've got to be killed or we're done for. Come on. Ready, fellas? Yeah, let's go. Get up. Get up there. Come on. Get up. Get up.
The Lone Ranger
Dorgan's men were certain that in time the white stallion bearing a double burden must weaken. In fact, the great horse slowed its pace several times as though in distress.
Unknown Cowboy
It's slowing down again. This time we'll catch him sure. Get up there.
Bart Fraser
Get up.
Unknown Cowboy
They caning take close enough for shooting yet. Don't fire till I tell you. Just keep moving. Get up there. Get it on there. What's the matter?
Betty Fraser
Look it.
Unknown Cowboy
They're picking up speed. I thought they was corners for sure. Don't stop. They can't always stay ahead. Use your whips. Don't let down. Get up there.
The Lone Ranger
From time to time, Betty turned in the saddle to watch the pursuit.
May Fraser
They're falling back.
Unknown Cowboy
Why no good. We're ending this race just ahead.
May Fraser
You mean we're giving up?
Unknown Cowboy
Look behind us again, but this time we're past those fellows. Look. Come on, Silver. Come on.
Betty Fraser
There's more riders.
Unknown Cowboy
I saw them five minutes ago. There's a paint horse in the lead. Palos. It's the law.
May Fraser
That's why you circle back to the valley.
Unknown Cowboy
Right.
May Fraser
Then we'll beat them.
Unknown Cowboy
But we've got to hold their attention until the law can close in. I'm pulling up by those trees. Get behind cover and start firing. Hold this over. Oh, boy. Hold there down, will you? Fire over their heads. They're raining up. Keep firing, but don't give them a chance to see what's happening until it's too late.
The Lone Ranger
Jorgen frantically urged his men to advance on foot.
Unknown Cowboy
Come on close in, Adam. We wait. They'll be gone again. Not me. I don't know close until we've picked them off. Me neither. The pools will be dope. Hey, look. Back up. What's that? Hello. We gotta clear out of here. We care if there ain't no place to go? The masked ball's ahead of us and log behind. We're cut off. What do we do? Fight it out, man. Nothing going. I'm giving up. Yellow coyotes. You blasted quitters. Why don't you fight us? We ain't got a chance. Drop your gun. Drop your gun. We get drilled. Try to fought it out with you. If I had anybody to back me.
Sheriff Miller
I've waited a long time for something to happen that'd give me reason to arrest you, Jorgen. But I reckon I won't have to wait no longer.
Unknown Cowboy
Why would I cut him?
Bart Fraser
This is what I've been waiting for, too.
Sheriff Miller
Round up the rest of the skunks, deputy.
Betty Fraser
Sure.
Bart Fraser
Here comes the masked man and that cowboy of mine.
Unknown Cowboy
Hi there. Hold that stupid. Oh, boy. Who last? You fellas, we almost caught you.
Betty Fraser
You never had a chance, Jorgen. We could have out distanced you at any time. We kept you following because we knew a posse was on its way.
Jorgen
That's a lie.
Bart Fraser
Yeah. Well, Jorgen, anytime you plan to race the Lone Ranger, just let me know.
Unknown Cowboy
The Lone Ranger? That's where I heard of a horse called Silver before.
Jorgen
And we never guessed it.
Bart Fraser
And we was tricked in fine style. Hey, young feller.
Jorgen
Yeah?
Bart Fraser
You done your share. I reckon you got a bonus coming. And a job with me as long as you like. How's that?
Betty Fraser
Thanks, Pa. Meet your daughter, Bart. Betty. Take off that hat there.
Sheriff Miller
Well, I'll be hogtied Jorgen, you will hang as high as a kite. It was a girl you was trying to kill.
Unknown Cowboy
Oh, I never knew. How could I?
Sheriff Miller
Listen, Sheriff, I reckon you'd hang anyhow, but this will just make it more certain.
Unknown Cowboy
No, no, no.
Sheriff Miller
Listen to me.
Unknown Cowboy
Get going.
Betty Fraser
Wait. Hold on.
Sheriff Miller
There's a rope waiting for you. To stretch it and talk won't save you now.
Betty Fraser
Pa?
Bart Fraser
Yeah?
Jorgen
Are you still sorry I'm not a boy?
Bart Fraser
Betty, I've said a lot of foolish things in the past, and I reckon I'll say a heap more before I cash in, but that won't be one of them. And let me tell you something, young yes? Don't never forget to thank your lucky stars the masked man was around.
Jorgen
Oh, I couldn't.
Bart Fraser
And as long as you live, don't try a stunt like this again.

The story weaves a narrative of deception, bravery, and redemption, featuring beloved characters such as The Lone Ranger, Tonto, Betty Fraser, Bart Fraser, and the antagonist, Jorgen.
The episode kicks off with tension as Jorgen, a notorious figure, attempts to usurp Bart Fraser's cattle operations. At [04:23], The Lone Ranger narrates the impending danger:
“The Lone Ranger and Tonto were riding toward the town of Reed's Ferry when suddenly the masked man's great white stallion reared high.” [04:23]
Jorgen’s men confront Bart and his family, creating an atmosphere of suspense. Betty Fraser, Bart’s daughter, demonstrates remarkable bravery by shooting one of Jorgen’s men, revealing her skills and setting the stage for her pivotal role in the unfolding drama.
Betty Fraser emerges as a key protagonist, disguising herself as a cowboy to support her ailing father. Her confrontation with Jorgen begins at [04:35]:
Betty Fraser: “So we'll take our chances.” [07:29]
Her adeptness with firearms and her determination to protect her family illustrate her as a formidable force against the antagonistic forces threatening their livelihood. Betty's disguise is not just a protective measure but a statement of her resilience and capability, challenging the traditional gender roles of the era.
Sheriff Miller plays a crucial role in mediating the conflict. At [14:16], he informs Bart about Jorgen’s suspicions:
Sheriff Miller: “He said one of them was masked and the other was a redskin. Nothing in it, is there?” [14:38]
This revelation that The Lone Ranger is already working covertly to aid Bart sets the stage for a collaborative effort between law enforcement and the masked hero. The sheriff’s insights and support become instrumental in unraveling Jorgen’s schemes and fortifying Bart’s position against the encroaching threat.
The tension peaks as Jorgen mobilizes his men to drive Bart out by targeting his valuable herd of shorthorns. Betty Fraser and The Lone Ranger devise a strategic plan to protect the herd and confront Jorgen’s forces. At [12:09], Betty reveals her true identity and intentions:
Betty Fraser: “I'll see you again.” [12:09]
Her declaration underscores the personal stakes involved and her commitment to saving her father’s legacy. The ensuing battle showcases classic Western themes of good versus evil, with The Lone Ranger's strategic acumen and Betty’s fearless combat skills playing decisive roles.
As the confrontation intensifies around [22:18], Jorgen’s men realize they are up against a skilled and determined adversary:
Bart Fraser: “Yeah. Well, Jorgen, anytime you plan to race the Lone Ranger, just let me know.” [28:09]
This moment highlights the triumph of righteousness as Jorgen’s plans unravel, leading to his eventual capture and the restoration of peace to Bart Fraser’s ranch.
In the aftermath of the showdown, the Fraser family experiences reconciliation and strengthened bonds. Bart Fraser acknowledges his past shortcomings, particularly his disappointment over not having a son, which had strained his relationship with Betty:
Bart Fraser: “Betty, I've said a lot of foolish things in the past, and I reckon I'll say a heap more before I cash in, but that won't be one of them.” [29:03]
This heartfelt moment signifies personal growth and the healing of familial ties, emphasizing the episode's themes of forgiveness and understanding.
