The Lone Ranger
In the early days of the western United States, outlaws made their headquarters in the badlands, where cliff dwellers had lived centuries before. It was in this country that the mysterious city of the dead was to be found. And it was there that the masked Rider of the plains met one of his most exciting adventures. Return with us now to those thrilling days when the west was young. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse. Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again. Come on, Tilway. Outlaws are in the district down Tilbury. It was past midnight, and in the great sprawling Dobie ranch house with its dozens of rooms that had belonged to the Dawsons for three generations, only one lamp was burning. The windows of the lighted room had been covered with blankets. And in the room center, young Don Dawson and his sister Peggy were sitting side by side. Don held a shotgun across his lap. From time to time, his eyes darted about the room, and when he spoke, it was in a tone scarcely above a whisper.
Don Dawson
Peggy?
Peggy Dawson
Yes?
Unknown Outlaw
Did you hear anything that time?
Peggy Dawson
What?
Unknown Outlaw
Just for a second there, I thought I heard someone moving outside in the hall. You know, footsteps, kind Of.
Peggy Dawson
I didn't hear it. Wait. We'll listen.
Unknown Outlaw
I don't hear it now. I guess I was imagining things.
Peggy Dawson
Maybe. Maybe they won't come tonight.
Unknown Outlaw
I hope they do.
Peggy Dawson
Don, how can you say that?
Unknown Outlaw
Well, I. Doggone it. I want to find out what's going on around here. If I catch them, they're going to talk, and talk plenty.
Peggy Dawson
But what? What if they catch us?
Unknown Outlaw
They won't. But, darn it, in the first place, I'd blow them to glory if they tried it. And in the second place, they. Well, they wouldn't know where we are. That's why I covered the windows to hide the light. They're likely to think we're going to bed.
Peggy Dawson
Oh, I hope so.
Unknown Outlaw
They ain't gonna come prowling around our house night after night and get away with it.
Peggy Dawson
Don, what do you suppose they're after?
Unknown Outlaw
Don't ask me. We haven't anything worth stealing.
Peggy Dawson
But they must have some reason.
Unknown Outlaw
I suppose so.
Peggy Dawson
Do you think there could be something valuable in the house that we don't know about?
Unknown Outlaw
What? We've sold everything anyone would buy just to get cash to keep the place going. What have we got outside of a few chairs and rugs and a couple tables and the beds we sleep in? I wish when Grandpa built this place, he'd figure out a way for us to keep it up.
Peggy Dawson
Dar, that's what I've been wondering about.
Unknown Outlaw
Wondering about what?
Peggy Dawson
You remember what Father told us, don't you?
Unknown Outlaw
What? That money Grandpa was supposed to have hid?
Peggy Dawson
Yes.
Unknown Outlaw
I don't believe it. I don't think he ever had any. 200,000 in gold. He must have dreamed it.
Peggy Dawson
I think it's true.
Unknown Outlaw
Huh. Then why hasn't the money ever been found?
Peggy Dawson
No one's known where to look.
Unknown Outlaw
Then why didn't Grandpa leave directions, a map or something?
Peggy Dawson
Maybe he did. We don't know. Maybe he did and it's been lost or.
Unknown Outlaw
Or what?
Peggy Dawson
Well, Father said at that time there were some outlaws across the boarder who'd been threatening Grandpa. Grandpa decided he better leave the district. He got that $200,000 together by selling almost everything he had except the little bit of land that's left in this house.
Unknown Outlaw
I know all that. What about it?
Peggy Dawson
It was those outlaws who killed him. Maybe they did it before he had a chance to make a map or tell anyone where the money was hidden.
Unknown Outlaw
Or maybe those crooks got it, if there ever was that much money.
Peggy Dawson
Carter used to say no one thought they did.
Unknown Outlaw
What's all that got to do with what's been happening here this last week.
Peggy Dawson
But don't you see, Dan? Maybe the money was hidden right here in this house. Maybe these men who've been breaking in learned about it somehow. Maybe that's what they've been looking for.
Unknown Outlaw
Say it's your local. If that money's hidden here and we don't. What?
Peggy Dawson
Don, not.
Don Dawson
Quiet.
Peggy Dawson
Don, look. The door.
The Lone Ranger
Hey, you there.
Unknown Outlaw
The lamp. Whoever would have shot at the light. Who did that?
The Lone Ranger
Where are you? Hold on there. Don.
Peggy Dawson
Wait for me.
Unknown Outlaw
Maggie. Peggy. What are we gonna do? They've locked us in.
The Lone Ranger
How to? Pull up. Quick. Behind these trees. This way, boy. Up, scout.
Unknown Outlaw
Who?
The Lone Ranger
Them feller, that's what I'd like to know. Them ride plenty late. Not many men ride the range at this time of night. For honest reasons. Quiet.
Don Dawson
Get along, now. Get up, you all. Get up there.
The Lone Ranger
Too dark to make them out. They must have come from the Dawson.
Unknown Outlaw
Place in that direction.
The Lone Ranger
It's the only place between here and the border. Isn't that right? Don and his sister have no one working for them. If those fellows came from there, I'll wager something's wrong. Don't follow me. Come on, Silver. Get him up. Scout, I am Silver. Away.
Unknown Outlaw
Hold this.
The Lone Ranger
Over. It looks as if there are a lamp burning in every room in the house. That's right. Come.
Unknown Outlaw
Stand right where you are.
The Lone Ranger
You've got guns.
Unknown Outlaw
And if you come a step closer, I'll use it. Just a couple of crooks, but I'll take care. Oh, my hands.
The Lone Ranger
How to get that shotgun before he can grab it again. Don, you're not hurt.
Unknown Outlaw
Why are you?
The Lone Ranger
We met, you know, Harm. Now, what's going on around here?
Unknown Outlaw
Why, what's it to you?
The Lone Ranger
You wouldn't understand. We explained.
Unknown Outlaw
Well, then, what do you do?
The Lone Ranger
You've had trouble. We're here as friends.
Unknown Outlaw
No crooks. A friend of ours.
The Lone Ranger
You might as well tell what's happened here willingly. Because if you don't, we'll learn the truth before we leave in spite of you. Now talk.
Unknown Outlaw
So that's the way it was. They locked us in. We were in the room for almost half an hour. We could hear them talking and moving around the house. But we couldn't make out what they were saying or who they were.
The Lone Ranger
I see. Did it sound as if they were making a search?
Peggy Dawson
Oh, yes. That's exactly the way it sounded.
Unknown Outlaw
Stranger. Well, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for taking that gun to you. I don't know who you are, and if you're honest, I don't understand why you should be wearing a mask. But I know from the way you've talked that you really did ride here because you thought Peggy and I might be in trouble.
The Lone Ranger
Thank you, Don. Now perhaps we can make a real effort to get to the bottom of this. I notice you've lighted lamps in all the rooms.
Peggy Dawson
You've been all over the house to find if anything was taken.
The Lone Ranger
That's what I wanted to ask. Have there been nothing?
Peggy Dawson
Don, that's not true.
Unknown Outlaw
Huh? Oh, shush. That old rug didn't mean anything. She saw that one of the rugs was missing, and she's bound they took it. Most likely it's been gone for weeks, and she just now noticed it.
The Lone Ranger
A rug? What was it like?
Peggy Dawson
It had belonged to grandpa.
Unknown Outlaw
It was just a braided rug some Navajo squaw most likely made. Wasn't big, only about 2ft square.
Peggy Dawson
It's a funny kind of a design work, Denny.
Unknown Outlaw
Nothing outlaws would want.
The Lone Ranger
But you're sure nothing else was taken?
Peggy Dawson
Nothing. Nothing at all.
The Lone Ranger
And nothing was disturbed? I mean, floors torn up or anything like that? You mentioned the money her grandfather was supposed to have hidden.
Unknown Outlaw
That was all. Just the rug.
The Lone Ranger
And I may be wrong, yes. But it looks to me as if that rug were exactly what they came for duration. Why, I haven't the slightest idea. But I mean to find out. Tondo, those men who passed us tonight, could you pick up that trail again? Me find it. Good.
Unknown Outlaw
You two mean to trail those coyotes?
The Lone Ranger
Yes.
Unknown Outlaw
Well, then I'm going along.
Peggy Dawson
And if you're going, Don, I'm going too.
The Lone Ranger
There may be danger.
Unknown Outlaw
I'm not afraid, stranger. When Peggy gets that look in her eyes, she means what she says. All right, sis, you can come. But if you do, you'll follow our order.
The Lone Ranger
The sun's coming up. Trail should be easier to see. Are we gaining on them? Tahlo them got plenty big leads.
Unknown Outlaw
I thought so.
The Lone Ranger
They were racing away when Taho and I saw them. We had to go slowly because we had to read sign. They won't continue at that pace.
Unknown Outlaw
And we should get close, eh?
The Lone Ranger
Yes. Tired?
Peggy Dawson
Me all right as far as Don Will.
The Lone Ranger
We'll keep on for a while and make camp at noon. Come on, Silver, old boy.
Unknown Outlaw
Peggy. Peggy, wake up. What?
Peggy Dawson
Oh.
Unknown Outlaw
Damn.
Peggy Dawson
To ride on.
Unknown Outlaw
It's almost full.
Peggy Dawson
Where's the madman? In Tondo.
Unknown Outlaw
Over there. They just got back the bed.
Peggy Dawson
They've been gone.
Unknown Outlaw
They haven't been sleeping like you have. They rode on a way to see if those crooks kept heading west.
Peggy Dawson
Are they?
Unknown Outlaw
No, the masked man says he thinks they cut over south. Oh, don't you know what that means?
Peggy Dawson
What?
Unknown Outlaw
Why, it looks as if they're heading for those cliff dwellings. You know, that old village they call the City of the Dead? Come on, get up. We've got to get on our way. Hey, stranger.
The Lone Ranger
Yes?
Unknown Outlaw
Isn't this pass we're going through the one that takes us into the valley where those cliff dwellings are?
The Lone Ranger
It is. Why?
Unknown Outlaw
Well, I don't like it.
The Lone Ranger
What do you mean?
Unknown Outlaw
Riding into that place at night like this kind of gives me the creeps. City of the Dead. I wish we'd stopped and made camp.
The Lone Ranger
Again at sundown and let those fellows get too far ahead of us.
Peggy Dawson
John, you're really not afraid, are you?
Unknown Outlaw
Who said I was?
Peggy Dawson
Well, you're certainly acting like it.
Unknown Outlaw
Oh, I just meant that if I had my choice, I'd come here when it's light, that's all. I'm not really afraid.
The Lone Ranger
It's just the name of the place that gives it a bad reputation. Don. Actually, none of these cliff homes have been occupied in generations. People call it the City of the Dead simply because the tribe that once occupied it has died out and vanished.
Unknown Outlaw
Sure, sure, I know.
The Lone Ranger
Still following the sign, Kimosabe. Then go this way. All right. I wonder if they plan on going farther or if this is their destination. Me not know. I'm beginning to get an idea that may prove to be true. John. What's the matter?
Unknown Outlaw
Gave me a shiver then, did you? I couldn't help it, Master Man. This place is getting on my nerves with all those caves along the wall of the valley there just like so many eyes staring at us.
The Lone Ranger
You're letting your imagination run away with you.
Unknown Outlaw
I'm just remembering some of the fun and funny stories I've heard about this place.
The Lone Ranger
Not when I've heard them. They're merely the imaginings of ignorant and superstitious natives. Maybe you'll see when the sun comes up. But there's nothing to fear in this valley.
Unknown Outlaw
What do you think about that? Peggy? What's the matter, sir? Stop, mess man.
The Lone Ranger
Hold on. What the.
Unknown Outlaw
Peggy. What's happened to her? Where's she gone? There's a horse, but he's banished.
The Lone Ranger
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger story before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments. It. Sam, how to continue our story. When Don Dawson cried out and the Lone Ranger saw that the saddle on the mount Peggy Dawson had been riding was empty, he reined in a slight pressure to the right. And the great horse Silver reared, whirled on his hind feet, raced back up the trail. Come on, Silver. Back trail. Damn tunnel. Follow me.
Unknown Outlaw
Hurry, Silver. Hurry, boy. Get up there. Come on.
The Lone Ranger
Come on.
Unknown Outlaw
Get up there. Where you going?
The Lone Ranger
There's just one thing that could have happened. What's that? I'll show you in a moment. Drive that horse faster. Come on, old fella.
Unknown Outlaw
Come on.
The Lone Ranger
Come on.
Unknown Outlaw
Come on.
The Lone Ranger
Get up.
Unknown Outlaw
Get up there, boy. Come on. Get up there.
The Lone Ranger
Those trees raining? Look here. Look at this tree and this branch. Look at the ground. See those twigs, those torn leaves?
Unknown Outlaw
I know. It's savvy, Tonto. Savvy.
The Lone Ranger
Done. There's three branches out over the trail. We rode under it just a few minutes ago coming into this valley. You mean it? Someone was concealed overhead, waiting for us. Your sister's horse must have been lagging just enough behind, so when she was seized, we didn't see it.
Unknown Outlaw
But why didn't she call out?
The Lone Ranger
No doubt she couldn't. She was probably gagged, grabbed from under our noses. But we know which way she's been taken, huh? It's narrow here. If a horse had been close by when we came this way, we would have seen it. In other words, whoever was in that tree escaped by climbing from the tree and up the wall of the valley. Look there.
Unknown Outlaw
See that ridge?
The Lone Ranger
Yeah. That's the way Peggy was carried.
Unknown Outlaw
That ridge heads up toward those caves.
The Lone Ranger
Right.
Unknown Outlaw
There's hundreds of them. Those cooks might be hiding anywhere. What can we do?
The Lone Ranger
The only thing possible.
Unknown Outlaw
What's that?
The Lone Ranger
Leave the horses here and follow that ridge ourselves. Come on. All right, Don. Give me your hand. Here. Up with you. All right. Tada.
Peggy Dawson
Me naked.
The Lone Ranger
Well, now that we're on the ridge, the rest should be easy. Regular path landing up above. The Indians who once lived here must have carved it out of the rock in order to get down into the valley from the caves and back up again.
Unknown Outlaw
Let's go.
The Lone Ranger
Right. Yep. Coming, Kimosabe.
Unknown Outlaw
See anything ahead?
The Lone Ranger
You hear anything? No, don't worry about that now, Don. Job is to get her back as quickly as we can.
Unknown Outlaw
Those dirty sidewinders.
The Lone Ranger
Put your voice down and watch your step. Slip and you'd have a nasty tumble.
Unknown Outlaw
We're getting pretty high.
The Lone Ranger
This path goes all the way to.
Unknown Outlaw
The top row of caves.
The Lone Ranger
Just make them out.
Unknown Outlaw
What I want to know is what.
The Lone Ranger
That hell shot up right where you are.
Don Dawson
Front of your chance. The next shots I fire won't be for warning. He ain't right at you.
The Lone Ranger
Who are you?
Don Dawson
That's something you Ain't never going to.
Unknown Outlaw
Find out you got my sister. You better get.
Don Dawson
You want to see her back safe again?
The Lone Ranger
Sit up and listen to what I say, ass man.
Unknown Outlaw
Let's rush it.
Don Dawson
I heard what you said, young fellow. Don't you try it. I got more up here beside me than guns. This know how the Indians used to live here? Kept their enemies from coming up that there pan. They piled up big rocks where I'm standing. Anybody come up here that shouldn't they rolling them down on them. That's likely what'll happen to you.
The Lone Ranger
That doggone take your partner as a kid.
Don Dawson
Take it easy. God, them rocks. I got to have it as their friends up here along with me. He can handle the tree of you any kind.
The Lone Ranger
Listen to me. You're the man who broke into Don's home.
Don Dawson
Won't do any harm to admit it now. Sure we are.
The Lone Ranger
You stole that rug.
Don Dawson
Notice it was gone, did you? Aha. We stole that rug. Why, that's something you just as likely did. I keep to find out, but I ain't telling.
The Lone Ranger
Why did you capture Ms. Dawson?
Don Dawson
Because we could give you all three orders.
The Lone Ranger
And you take them orders.
Don Dawson
Now look you fellas below there. We don't aim to harm nobody. Listen.
The Lone Ranger
We're forced to it go on.
Don Dawson
All we want is for you fellas to clear out of this valley for a couple of days or so. Leave us alone.
The Lone Ranger
And if we do, the girl will be let loose.
Don Dawson
It won't be hard none at all.
The Lone Ranger
But if we don't?
Don Dawson
Well, that's up to you. I ain't coming right out to seeing what'll happen to the Jews.
The Lone Ranger
Yes.
Don Dawson
How's promise you this? Wonder what?
Unknown Outlaw
Do you ever see it again, you coyote. If I could just get my hands on you, I'll break you.
The Lone Ranger
Then keep quiet. Are you listening up there?
Don Dawson
Sure.
The Lone Ranger
And we'll agree to your terms. We leave at once. We have your promise that the girl will be released.
Don Dawson
Oh, no. You don't miss it.
The Lone Ranger
What's wrong with that?
Don Dawson
You'll leave all right. Wait for morning to do it. Why go now while it's dark? And how do we know you won't just pretend to pull that? Then hide your horses and jump it when you see the chance.
The Lone Ranger
What do you suggest?
Don Dawson
Go back below, wait till set up, then pull stick. We'll be able to watch you throw up above. Won't be able to trick us.
The Lone Ranger
Very well. We'll do that on one condition. Before we leave in the morning, you let Ms. Dawson step out on the ridge. So we can see she's all right before we're gone.
Don Dawson
All right, Ms. Siddharth. It's a bargain.
The Lone Ranger
Good.
Unknown Outlaw
You mean you trust those skunks?
The Lone Ranger
John, Keep still and follow me. We're going back to the horses.
Unknown Outlaw
Man. Samana. I never thought you'd trust Polkadot like those crooks that got my sister. I thought you had too much sense.
The Lone Ranger
But I don't trust him.
Unknown Outlaw
You don't? Then why in thunder you're pulling stakes on their promise?
The Lone Ranger
Done. Well, your sister will be safe until tomorrow. I made them promise to let her appear on the ridge in the morning just to make sure.
Unknown Outlaw
But even so, I haven't finished.
The Lone Ranger
They wanted to guard against tricks. That's why they told us to wait until sunup before we left. They wanted to be able to keep an eye on us.
Unknown Outlaw
Sure, but how?
The Lone Ranger
Well, they thought of one trick we might try. They thought of a way to prevent it.
Unknown Outlaw
What are you getting at?
The Lone Ranger
But there's another that can work. And if you want to do as I say, I promise it will. Snapper. Hi, Snapper. Come around. Bring that girl along. Them fellas down below are getting ready to pull out.
Don Dawson
How'd you 18 hurt? None. See you friends down in the valley there. They're looking up here. You wave to them. Sure. If you're still alive. That's right.
Unknown Outlaw
Hey.
The Lone Ranger
Hey, Snapper. See that one gent riding that white horse? Must be hurt some. The engine's holding him in the saddle.
Don Dawson
Good enough for him. Must have got hurt climbing down from here last night. Yeah.
The Lone Ranger
Anyhow, they're pulling out.
Don Dawson
All right. You keep watching.
Unknown Outlaw
Uh huh.
Don Dawson
Stay here till you're sure they're out of sight. Then come into the cave and let us know.
The Lone Ranger
Kino.
Don Dawson
Come on, you. Back inside.
Peggy Dawson
You'll pay for this. You just wait and see.
Don Dawson
All right, fellage.
Unknown Outlaw
Quiet.
Don Dawson
Nick's told us in three gentle up the valley. That's fine as far as it goes. We don't know how soon they'll be turning around and coming back again. Got that bad. Nick, you bring that rug. There you are, right there in front of me. Yeah, what's it called? You button in again. Well, it won't matter if you know. You ain't gonna live to tell nobody about it. It's what you think I mean.
Peggy Dawson
Look, you promised you'd let me go free.
Don Dawson
If that part of yours were interest enough to believe that. What do I care? You're the only one that's seen what we look like. You figure we're locked enough to let you loose to testify against someday.
Unknown Outlaw
Oh, you.
Don Dawson
You check Smith. Call me anything you want if it's relieve your feelings, Eddie. Now then, you want br. Get a close around here. Come on, boys. I'm going to show you what this rug means.
The Lone Ranger
You throw up your hand. A mask, man.
Unknown Outlaw
Where'd he come from?
The Lone Ranger
Thought he rode away.
Don Dawson
Hey, get that old BR.
The Lone Ranger
I have two guns here. That means 12 bullets. And if you try anything, I'll make every one of them count. I don't. Sammy. I know I seen you right away. Thought you did. But I'm sure you tell the figure we built last night to look like me. It was tied to the saddle of my horse. That's why Tata was holding onto it. To hold it up. That'll bring my friend.
Unknown Outlaw
You hear those shots? Sonom. The mashman's got him. Come on. Turn around. Back to the caves.
The Lone Ranger
Get up there. Come on.
Unknown Outlaw
We're coming.
The Lone Ranger
Masked man. Hold everything.
Unknown Outlaw
That's the cave there. Tanner, watch out for your head.
The Lone Ranger
Cranky God, they were trying to kill me.
Peggy Dawson
I thought I'd never seen you again.
Unknown Outlaw
I guess if it hadn't been for the masked man, you wouldn't have. Hey, what are those fellas digging for?
The Lone Ranger
Come here.
Unknown Outlaw
Huh?
The Lone Ranger
Look there.
Don Dawson
What?
The Lone Ranger
Nothing uncovered in the box. A chest, huh? That's enough. You there. Break that chest open. Or do you want a taste of lead? All right, all right.
Don Dawson
I'll get it done. Gold, David. It looks like a million dollars.
The Lone Ranger
Well, not that much. But maybe it'll come close to 200,000.
Unknown Outlaw
200,000?
The Lone Ranger
But that's what your grandfather hid away here in this cave. The gold, all that gold belongs to you and your sister. And done what? It also explains why these fellows broke into your place to steal something with as little apparent value as this rug. Down. That rug was the clue to the hiding place. Look at it. See those markings woven in? They make a clear map of these caves. And there's a small cross that indicates this cave. Another cross to show where the gold had been buried.
Peggy Dawson
And we saw that rug almost every day of our lives. Without Captain.
The Lone Ranger
Your grandfather was evidently killed before he had a chance to tell anyone his secret. When he hid the gold, however, he had a squall weave this map into the rug. That's how Snapper here learned about it. I got that out of him while I was waiting for you. That old Indian woman is still living. He told him about the rug without fully realizing its significance itself. Snapper knew the story about the hidden gold and put two and two together.
Unknown Outlaw
So that's it. Well, Snapper, hey, you put two and two together all right. But when we get you back to town, we put you and a rope together thanks to the masked man.
