Narrator (Gun Smoke Introduction)
Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. marshal. And the smell of gun smoke. Gun sport. Starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America.
Ms. Gross
And.
Narrator (Gun Smoke Introduction)
And the story of a man who moved with it.
Matt Dillon
I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job, and it makes a man watchful and a little lone.
Chester
She's coming out now, Mr. John. This ain't gonna be easy on her, Mr. John.
Matt Dillon
Facts are facts, Chester. There's nothing we can do to change them.
Chester
Yes, sir, I.
Matt Dillon
Ah. Good evening, Ms. Gross.
Ms. Gross
Oh, Marshall Chester.
Chester
Evening, ma'. Am. Fetched Marvin his supper, did you?
Ms. Gross
Oh, yes. Land sakes, the hours the bank makes that poor boy work the caution. He wouldn't hardly ever get no warm food if I didn't pack it down to him. How've you been, Marshall?
Matt Dillon
Oh, fine, Ms. Gross, just fine.
Ms. Gross
That's good. Well, no, you gents have got things to do. Mighty nice to pass the word with you.
Chester
Good night, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am.
Narrator (Gun Smoke Introduction)
Good night.
Chester
There's a doggone shame. She's a fine woman.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
It's just going to break her heart.
Matt Dillon
I don't like this any better than.
Chester
You do, but it just don't make sense. Marvin Gross is likable, a young fellow you'd ever meet. Quiet, pleasant spoken.
Matt Dillon
Honey, you never know. Wait outside here, will you? I want to talk to him alone.
Chester
All right. I'm sorry. The bank's closed. Oh, Marshall Dillon.
Matt Dillon
Evening, Marvin. You working late again?
Chester
Sort of getting to be a habit. Mom just brought my supper. Like some coffee, Marshall?
Matt Dillon
No, thanks.
Chester
I don't really mind working late now and then. The other teller's married and got a family, and I got nothing to do with myself evenings anyhow. You. You won't mind if I go ahead and eat more?
Matt Dillon
No, no, no, go ahead, Martin.
Chester
You wouldn't figure there'd be much book work in a bank like this. Town the size of Dodge, but the doggone sure is.
Matt Dillon
Well, there's a lot of business done around here. I guess it's all gonna be kept straight, huh?
Chester
Yeah, that's it, all right, but it sure takes time and paperwork. Oh, by golly, mom fixed me chicken and dumplings tonight. Sure you won't have some?
Matt Dillon
No, no, Thanks. A. Marvin, Mr. Bodkin was in to see me today.
Chester
No. Well, I can say one thing about him. He's a fine man to work for.
Matt Dillon
Well, he was explaining the system you use here with your gold reserve. How you keep the gold in the vault and issue banknotes against it.
Chester
Yeah, it's the same system most of the banks out here use.
Matt Dillon
Well, he tells me that ordinarily the golds only check once a year when the bank examiner comes through.
Ms. Gross
That's right.
Chester
It just gathers dust rest of the time.
Matt Dillon
Well, yesterday Mr. Bodkin took a notion to check it himself. Marvin, there's $20,000.
Chester
What?
Matt Dillon
He says that you're the only man in the bank who had any chance to take it.
Chester
No, Marshall, there must be some mistake.
Matt Dillon
Well, I said the same thing, but Mr. Bikin was pretty convincing. I got a warrant here. Marvin, you're under arrest for grand larceny.
Chester
No, it's all wrong.
Andrew Rines
No.
Matt Dillon
Don't be a fool, Marvin.
Chester
I'm not going to jail.
Matt Dillon
Here. Give me that gun.
Ms. Gross
Drop it. Drop it.
Chester
Are you all right, Mr.
Ms. Gross
Dune?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, I'm all right, Chester, but go find Doc and get him over here fast.
Ms. Gross
It.
Chester
He must be in mighty bad shape, Mr. Dillon. Doc's been in there for near half hour.
Matt Dillon
I guess a bank office isn't the best operating room in the world.
Chester
Marshall, when he grabbed that gun out of the drawer, was he trying to shoot you or himself?
Matt Dillon
I don't know, Mr. Bucken. I'm not sure that he knew. He was caught off guard and he acted without even stopping to think.
Chester
You think somebody ought to go tell his mother, Mr. Jones?
Matt Dillon
Now, Doc said to wait. He's got a tough job to do. And he figures that Ms. Gross being here to just make it harder.
Chester
She's a fine woman. Waits on that boy hand and foot. It was gonna be a terrible shock to her. Yeah, for her sake. I hated to bring charges against Marvin, but there just wasn't any choice.
Matt Dillon
Mr. Botkin, is there any chance at all that. Well, somebody else could have taken the gold out of the vault.
Chester
We went over all that when I signed the warrant.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, I know we did.
Chester
The bullion safe is inside the vault. The other teller, Oscar Greeley, has access to the vault. But only Marvin and myself have the combination of the safe. I wish there were some other explanation.
Matt Dillon
But there just isn't. I guess not.
Chester
This thing is just as unbelievable to me as it is to you, Marshall. That boy's been with the bank nearly two Years now. And I thought I knew him. Trusted him completely. Well, anybody would have, Mr. Bodkin. Quiet fellow like him. Not gambling or hanging around the saloon. Just living at home with his ma. Well, gentlemen.
Matt Dillon
Oh, good, good. How soon can I talk to him? I said the job's done. I got the bullet out.
Chester
The boy's dead, though. Dead.
Matt Dillon
We didn't have the chance. Do you say anything, Doc? Not a word. Didn't even come to. All right, Chester, let's get to work.
Chester
Well, it appears to me the job's over, mister.
Matt Dillon
That's $20,000 worth of gold. St.
Ms. Gross
Missing.
Matt Dillon
And even worse, somebody's got to tell his mother. I'm sorry, miss.
Ms. Gross
I don't believe it, Marshall. It's not true.
Matt Dillon
I wish it weren't.
Ms. Gross
My son. Dead. Shot to death.
Matt Dillon
Accidentally. Ms.
Ms. Gross
Gross.
Matt Dillon
To resist an arrest. He was shot with his own gun. It happened about an hour ago in the bank.
Ms. Gross
Oh, no.
Matt Dillon
Here, grab her, Justin.
Ms. Gross
Yeah.
Chester
Easy, man. Oh, you. You just lean back a minute and catch your breath.
Ms. Gross
Marvin.
Chester
Well, you stay right there now. I'll go get you a dip of water.
Ms. Gross
It was less than two hours ago. I took him in supper. Chicken, it was. Flour, dumpling. I told him to come right home to my pregnancy.
Matt Dillon
I'm sorry, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am.
Chester
Here you are, Ms. Gross. You can just drink this now. It'll help to settle yourself.
Ms. Gross
All right.
Chester
Could you do some more?
Ms. Gross
No, no. I'm much obliged to you.
Matt Dillon
I'm mighty sorry to have to bring you the news, Ms. Grossman. Well, what's done is done. And, well, turning away from it won't change anything.
Ms. Gross
You said Marvin was shot resisting arrest.
Matt Dillon
Yes, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am. Arrest for what? What had he done?
Matt Dillon
Well, they. That's the second thing I hate telling you.
Ms. Gross
Well, my son never committed a crime in his life, Martin.
Matt Dillon
I'm afraid he didn't. It's gross. There's $20,000 in gold missing from the bank vault. Marvin's the only one who could have taken it.
Ms. Gross
Oh, it's a lie.
Matt Dillon
Well, if it were, there'd have been no reason for Marvin trying to resist arrest, now, wouldn't it?
Ms. Gross
Well, I've always known everything he thought or done. He told me everything I'd have known if he'd done anything like that.
Matt Dillon
Maybe this was the one thing he didn't tell you.
Ms. Gross
Did he say he done it?
Matt Dillon
No, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am. Did you catch him with it? Did anybody see him take it?
Matt Dillon
No, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am.
Matt Dillon
Nobody saw him. Now, we haven't found the gold, but we.
Ms. Gross
Why didn't I say it again, it's a lie.
Matt Dillon
Look, Ms. Griffiths, I hate to do this, but we're gonna have to search your house. He's bound to have hidden it somewhere.
Ms. Gross
All right, Marshall, search it. Tear out the walls and dig up the floor if you want, but you won't find nothing because there's nothing to find. I know my son. I know my son.
Matt Dillon
Yes, ma'. Am. All right, Chester, let's get at it.
Ms. Gross
Sa.
Chester
Real nice evening for this time of year, Mr. Jones. Yeah, it sure is gonna be an early spring. I seen a whole passel of metal arcs this morning out south of town.
Matt Dillon
Oh, they probably wondered here.
Chester
Oh, sir, there's too doggone many of them, too. Oh, here comes Ms. Gross. Let's go across the street.
Matt Dillon
You can't dodge trouble by running from it.
Chester
Well, I know, but the way she feels about things.
Ms. Gross
Marshall.
Chester
Oh, no, she's sauce.
Matt Dillon
Good evening, Ms. Gris.
Ms. Gross
I'm glad I run into you, Marshall. I was aiming to come by your office. You found out yet who robbed the bank?
Matt Dillon
No, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am. You found the money yet?
Matt Dillon
No, not yet.
Ms. Gross
Two weeks now. My son laying out there on Boot Hill branded criminal, but not one bit of proof to back it up.
Matt Dillon
Well, I've followed up every possibility I could think of, ma', am, but not every single one of them has come to nothing.
Ms. Gross
But you keep trying.
Matt Dillon
Sure I will. I'll keep trying.
Ms. Gross
I reckon I knowed you would. It ain't you I blame, Marshall. You only done your duty. You got an honest reputation.
Matt Dillon
Thank you, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am. But I'll never forgive Mr. Botkin. Never in this life. He knowed my boy. He knowed he wasn't that kind. But he went ahead and swore to that warrant. He caused Marvin's death, just like he pulled that trigger himself.
Matt Dillon
Now, Ms.
Ms. Gross
Gross, that's not. I. I ain't going to talk about it no more. I already talked myself out and cried myself out. I'm on my way to the depot. Marshall. I was coming around to tell you goodbye. I'm leaving on the 11 o' clock train. I'm going back east to my kinfolk for a while, but I'll be back in a few months. Right now, there's just too many things in this town to remind me of my boy.
Matt Dillon
Awesome. Well, I wish you a good trip, Ms. Gross.
Ms. Gross
Marshall, I want my boy's name cleared. And I'll never rest till it's done.
Chester
I know that.
Ms. Gross
It will be. You'll see.
Matt Dillon
Well, I hope you're right. And you take Good care of yourself, huh?
Ms. Gross
I will. Goodbye, Marshall.
Chester
Goodbye, ma'.
Ms. Gross
Am.
Chester
My, she just won't give up, will she, now?
Matt Dillon
She's his mother, Chester, and even closer.
Chester
Than most for Marvin. Wouldn't hardly take a breath without her. Say so.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. No.
Chester
Well.
Matt Dillon
Hey, how'd you like to have a drink, huh?
Chester
Well, I'm.
Matt Dillon
I. I'm buying. Come on.
Chester
Well, I thank you. You know, she'll feel better when she gets shuttered out, won't she, back there with her own can.
Matt Dillon
Ah, sure she will.
Chester
This girl's a fine old lady. It's just too bad.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
My goodness, quite a crowd. Long bench tonight. Over here, Mac. Come on over here and enjoy this. There's Doc, Mr. Butt. Can you.
Matt Dillon
You want to join him, mister? Yeah, I might as well. Oh, would you pardon me, please?
Ms. Gross
Hello, Matt. Good to see you.
Matt Dillon
Hello, Kitty.
Chester
Can I get you something?
Matt Dillon
Yes, matter of fact, you can. The usual, if you don't mind.
Chester
The same for me, Miss Kitty. We'll be over at the table there.
Ms. Gross
All right, fine.
Matt Dillon
I'll join you. Good.
Chester
Pull up the chairman, Chesty. Join us solid, respectable citizens for a chain.
Matt Dillon
Others, some would agree with you. Doc, how are you?
Chester
I've been fine, Marshman. Now, buy you a drink?
Matt Dillon
Well, I got one coming. Thanks. Oh, I just saw Ms. Gross outside. She tells me she's going back easy.
Chester
Well, I can't say I'm sorry to hear it. For some reason, she seems to blame me for what her son did.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, As a matter of fact, she just suggested that maybe he would rob the bank. Yourself.
Chester
You search my house, Marshall. You surely don't.
Matt Dillon
No, no, of course not. She was just talking out her hurt. She knows there's no sense to it.
Chester
Well, I hope you don't put any.
Matt Dillon
Stock in anything she said. Oh, I don't. The boy was guilty. His whole reaction, going for that gun and all. Well, it surely was. She just won't accept the fact, that's all.
Chester
Well, a mother's relation to her son gets to be a funny kind of a thing sometimes. Especially when it's as close as that one was. Yes, I've thought time and again how odd it was that that boy kept himself so much. She never gave him a chance to get out. Mixed to grow. She ran his whole life on him, 24 hours a day.
Matt Dillon
They must have found some time, Doc. He thought up that robbery and then carried it out.
Chester
Well, that's true, but I got a theory about that man. I think he did it to hit back at her, sort of. It was A way to rebel, huh? Yeah. But Marvin wasn't never one to rebel much. Not against nobody. But he finally did. Oh, where you going, man?
Matt Dillon
Wait a minute. Maybe he didn't rebel. Doc, what time have you got?
Chester
Let me see here. It's 10:38. According to my gold watch insurance.
Matt Dillon
10:38, Chester. Well, here, I got a drink order later.
Chester
Later on. Standing there with a mail sex on me. Things like this upset me something terrible. I swear to God, one of these days I'm gonna turn to dry farming to make a living.
Matt Dillon
Sure you are, Chester. When they figure some way to take the work out of them. Ah, Mr.
Ms. Gross
Gross. Oh, who? Why, Marshall. It's quite a surprise.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, I imagine it is.
Ms. Gross
What?
Matt Dillon
You know you nearly got away with it. Another hour or so and you'd have had it safe out of town.
Ms. Gross
What are you talking about?
Matt Dillon
I got to thinking about Marvin. The kind of boy he was. And how he always did what you told him to.
Ms. Gross
He was a beautiful son. Sure.
Matt Dillon
And when I talked to the two men who carried your trunk here to the depot, they said they could hardly lift it.
Ms. Gross
What?
Matt Dillon
It's pretty heavy, I guess. With a hundred pounds of gold in the bottom of it.
Ms. Gross
That's a lie.
Matt Dillon
I just opened that trunk, Ms. Grosch.
Ms. Gross
You had no right, you. It was Marvin's trunk. I didn't know what was in it.
Matt Dillon
Your things are packed right in with the gold. Things I saw in your house the day I searched it. Ms. Gross, you're under arrest. Accessory to grand larceny.
Ms. Gross
Arrest?
Matt Dillon
That's right.
Ms. Gross
That stupid young fool getting yourself shot. He could have swore to some story that had cleared me and took all the blame himself. I tell you, he'd have been glad to do it for his own life.
Matt Dillon
He died for you, didn't he? What more do you want.
Ms. Gross
Sam?
