Bob Cousy Commercial Narrator
When you have your eyes on the stars, it's good to know champions are made, not born. Take basketball champion Bob Cousy, spectacular forward of the Boston Celtics. When Bob was just a lad of five, he practiced on the family drive, learned to pass, to shoot, to fake and gave himself this one big break. He ate his Wheaties every flake. Today Bob Sparks, that Boston team still eats his Wheaties with fruit and cream. Champion Bob Cousy got together with Wheaties when he was five years old. Twenty years ago, it's steady going with Wheaties. There's a whole kernel of wheat in every Wheaties flake.
The Lone Ranger
Come on Bob. Drive right in there.

Narrator
With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, the daring and resourceful mask rider of the Plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse. Silver.
The Lone Ranger
The Lone Ranger rides again. Come on, Silver.
Doug Dimick
Let's go, big fella.
The Lone Ranger
Are you Silver?
Narrator/Storyteller
The Lone Ranger and Toto were traveling through the Arrowhead Hills to reach Monument City late one afternoon when suddenly, Silver Cinch broke.
Wheaties Supporter
Without warning, as the saddle slipped on the mighty stallion's back, the masked man
Narrator/Storyteller
leaped to the ground.
Tonto
The team was. Honey, what happened?
The Lone Ranger
The cinch broke Toto.
Tonto
Oh, you tell me. Two day go Cinch. Warren. Sorry. May not fix it.
The Lone Ranger
It's my fault, Otto. I should have checked it this morning.
Tonto
What matter, Kimasabe?
The Lone Ranger
My ankles hurt.
Tonto
There's plenty good place in Hill to camp, Kimasabe. Maybe we find one near, make camp for night.
The Lone Ranger
That's a good idea, Toddo. I'll be able to doctor my ankle.
Dad.
Tonto
We not closer to town when spins break.
The Lone Ranger
We'll ride to town in the morning. Toto, I'd like to see Sudden Dean.
Tonto
Oh, him marshalled Monument City. Yes, and him plenty good lawmen.
The Lone Ranger
One of the finest in the West.
Narrator/Storyteller
Meanwhile, two men who lived in town rode through the hills on their way home. Sutton Dean's strict law enforcement made it impossible for Doug Dimmock and Hayes Morgan to steal enough to support themselves. So they had to hunt the food they ate. Dusk was falling as Hayes Morgan looked disgustedly at the only game they'd been able to find.
Hayes Morgan
One wild turkey. A mighty skinny one at that.
Doug Dimick
Game's getting scarce around here.
Hayes Morgan
If it gets any more scarce, we'll starve.
Doug Dimick
We ought to go to work, Hayes.
Hayes Morgan
And the only job I could get would be janitor in the express office.
Doug Dimick
Who trusts you with a job there?
Hayes Morgan
Reb Martin, the night watchman, is a friend of mine.
Tonto
Huh? He put in a good word for
Hayes Morgan
me with the manager.
Doug Dimick
I heard there's $50,000 in paper money in the express office right now.
Hayes Morgan
There is? Reb said it'll be sent east on the train leaving town tomorrow morning.
Doug Dimick
We could get that money.
Hayes Morgan
Oh, talk sense, Doug. Even if we got it, we wouldn't have a chance in the world of staying free long enough to spend it.
Doug Dimick
I don't know about that.
Hayes Morgan
Well, I do.
The Lone Ranger
Hey, look up on the hillside.
Hayes Morgan
See that smoke?
Doug Dimick
Yeah. Someone's built a campfire.
Hayes Morgan
If they're cooking a meal, they might share it with us.
Doug Dimick
There's no harm in asking.
The Lone Ranger
Come on.
Hayes Morgan
We'll head for their campsite. Get up there.
Tonto
Come on.
Narrator/Storyteller
Guiding their horses uphill, Doug and Hayes were still some distance from the camp when Doug signaled a hall.
Hayes Morgan
Why stop here, Hayes?
Doug Dimick
From here, you'll get a good view of that campfire.
Tonto
What about it? Take a good look at the fellas beside it.
Hayes Morgan
Hey, one of them's mass.
Doug Dimick
Come on, Hayes. We're getting out of here.
Narrator/Storyteller
Though the two riders were too far
Wheaties Supporter
away to be heard by the masked
Narrator/Storyteller
man or Toddo, they guided their horses downhill as quietly as possible. When they reached the main trail to Todd, Hayes grumbled.
Hayes Morgan
You'd better have a good reason for turning your back on a chance at a square meet.
Doug Dimick
I've a $50,000 reason. We'll steal that money from the express office and blame the masked man and his Indian pal for the robbery.
Hayes Morgan
Ah, you're local.
Doug Dimick
This is our chance to outsmart Marshall Dean. After we steal the money, we'll swear we saw the masked man and his partner ride away from the express office. Even if they're gone, when the marshal comes here to look for him, he'll find the remains of their campfire and keep after them.
Hayes Morgan
No. Reb Martin will know the truth.
Doug Dimick
We'll figure out a way to deal with him. Come on. Let's get back to town. Get up.
Narrator/Storyteller
Shortly after midnight, Reb Martin was dozing in his chair near the partly open express office window when Doug Demock and Hayes saw him. At the sight of the sleeping guard,
Tonto
Doug said, wrap on the window, Hayes.
Doug Dimick
Try to talk him into opening the door.
Tonto
You get back out of sight. Right.
Narrator/Storyteller
The tapping on the window startled Reb. He leaped to his feet and grabbed his gun. Then he saw Hayes.
Hayes Morgan
How'd you like some coffee? Rebuke?
Narrator/Storyteller
Oh, will you bring me some from the cafe?
Hayes Morgan
I've got it right here.
Tonto
Good for you. I'll unlock the door.
Narrator/Storyteller
It's against the rules to unlock the door, Hayes.
Tonto
But on that coffee will hit the spot.
Hayes Morgan
Get your hands up, Rev.
The Lone Ranger
You're covered.
Reb Martin
Shut up, Reb.
Hayes Morgan
Step back inside and be quick about it. Close the door, Doug, and take his gun.
Doug Dimick
Right.
Narrator/Storyteller
Hey, you double crossing skunk. If you think you'll get away with
Doug Dimick
making a fool of me, I got his good.
Tonto
I'll Keep him covered while you use
Hayes Morgan
the crowbar we brought with us to
Tonto
open the money chest.
Narrator/Storyteller
A few minutes later, Doug took the money from the chest.
Tonto
Look at it, Hayes. Look.
Hayes Morgan
We'll be on easy street for the rest of our lives. Put it in that canvas sack on the table.
Doug Dimick
Yeah, that'll be better than trying to carry this much money in our pocket.
Narrator/Storyteller
As he's watched Doug put the currency into the canvas bag, Reb Martin backed slowly toward a peg on the wall that held the express manager's gun belt and holstered gun. When he was within reach of the
Wheaties Supporter
weapon, he moved to grab it. But Doug saw him.
Doug Dimick
Hayes, he's going for a gun.
The Lone Ranger
I'll kill you too, you jughead.
Doug Dimick
You got him.
Hayes Morgan
He was loco to go for that gun.
Doug Dimick
Those shots will bring a crown here. On the double, Hayes.
Hayes Morgan
We've got the cash. Let's go.
Doug Dimick
I'm with you.
Wheaties Supporter
As they hurried from the back door of the office to the alley, Doug and Hayes heard the voices of excited townsmen coming to investigate the gunplay. Realizing they would enter the express office in a moment, the thieves concealed the
Narrator/Storyteller
stolen money beneath a water barrel.
Doug Dimick
Then we'll come back for the money later.
Hayes Morgan
Even so, it looks suspicious, us being so close to the office.
Doug Dimick
I'll take care of that.
How?
By knocking you out?
The Lone Ranger
Oh.
Wheaties Supporter
Doug brought his gun barrel down hard against his friend's head.
Narrator
As Hayes fell to the ground, Doug
Wheaties Supporter
quickly rubbed dust over his own clothing and shouted, help.
The Lone Ranger
Help. Thieves. Killers.
Cheerios Announcer
Help.
Wheaties Supporter
When Sutton Dean and a number of townsmen reached the alley, Doug was trying to rouse Hayes. As soon as he saw the marshal, Doug explained.
Doug Dimick
Marshal Dean. A couple of fellows robbed the express office. They shot Reb Martin.
Doug Jackson's in the office with Reb. What happened to you two?
We saw him come out of the office, Marshal. We tried to stop him, but the masked gent slugged Haze. His pal knocked me down.
The Lone Ranger
Oh, my hair.
Doug Dimick
He got away.
Hayes Morgan
What hit me?
Doug Dimick
Take it easy, Hayes.
Marshal Sutton Dean
Doug.
The Lone Ranger
You're no good.
Doug Dimick
Rattler. Hayes, the mask man wrapped your head with his gun barrel mask. We're lucky we didn't stop a couple of bullets.
The Lone Ranger
Yeah.
Hayes Morgan
Yeah, I reckon you're right.
Doug Dimick
Walk ahead of me to the office, Doug.
Tonto
You too, Hayes.
Doug Dimick
A lot of questions to answer.
Narrator/Storyteller
At Doc Jackson's request, Marshall Dean's deputy had already cleared the office of curious townspeople. While Doc knelt beside Rep. Martin examining his wounds, Marshall Dean questioned Doug, Dimick and Hayes. They explained that they were heading for the back door of the cafe when they heard the shot.
Doug Dimick
We came this way on the run. Just as we got to the door, the masked man and his engine partner came out.
Which way were they head when they left here?
Why, they rode for the trees on the other side of the alley. Before I could get a shot at them, they were out of sight.
Marshal Sutton Dean
Yes, they must be heading for Arrowhead Hill.
Doug Dimick
That's the only place around here they can hide.
I'll get a posse and ride through the hills to look for him.
If you capture them, we'll be able to identify him.
The Lone Ranger
Reb Martin will be able to identify him too.
Marshal Sutton Dean
Is he alive, Doug?
Doug Dimick
Yeah, but don't figure on asking him any questions. He's unconscious and likely to stay that
Narrator/Storyteller
way for a while.
Marshal Sutton Dean
What about moving him?
Tonto
Well, I'll send for a stretcher and
Doug Dimick
have him carried to my place.
The Lone Ranger
Good.
Marshal Sutton Dean
I'll assign two deputies to stay with him.
Tonto
Why?
Marshal Sutton Dean
As soon as he's able to talk, I want them on hand to get his story.
Tonto
I hope you get those crooks.
The Lone Ranger
I know.
Marshal Sutton Dean
The hill's like the palm of my hand, Doc.
The Lone Ranger
I'll get him.
Marshal Sutton Dean
And when I do, I hope they try to resist arrest.
Tonto
How come, Marshall?
Marshal Sutton Dean
Because I'd just as soon kill him as capture him.
Wheaties Supporter
We'll continue our Lone Ranger adventure in just a moment.
Cheerios Announcer
Jenny is 10 and is she good? She's skip woke champ of the neighborhood. She's so quick because she knows she's got gold power from Cheerios. Yes, she's got gold power. There she goes. She's feeling her Cheerios. Cheerios. Cheerios.

That makes sense.

Narrator/Storyteller
Now to continue. As soon as the posse left town, Hayes went to Dr. Jackson's house to seek information about the wounded guard and first aid for his bruised head. Meanwhile, Doug Dimick hurried to the deserted alley to retrieve the canvas sack they had concealed beneath the rain barrel. Shortly after, he returned to his cabin. Hayes.
Doug Dimick
I got the money.
Hayes Morgan
Hayes.
Tonto
Yeah? What's eating you?
Hayes Morgan
My head's aching so bad I can hardly see.
Doug Dimick
I had to let you have it to make our story about the masked man convincing.
Hayes Morgan
With Reb alive, that story won't hold up.
Tonto
How is he?
Hayes Morgan
Unconscious, but Doc said he'll pull through.
Doug Dimick
Why didn't you finish him while you're in the house?
Hayes Morgan
I would have, but the marshal's deputies are watching him so close, no one
Tonto
could get away with killing him. He'll talk.
Hayes Morgan
Well, one of the bullets brushed the side of Reb's head. Doc said he's unlikely to stay. Likely to stay conscious for three, four hours, maybe longer.
Doug Dimick
In three hours, the eastbound train will pull out of town. Yeah, we'll be on it, Hayes.
Hayes Morgan
Marshall Dean will be on our trail. We might as well give up.
Doug Dimick
We might get a 2 or 300 mile start on him before Rev talks. By that time, it'll be too late
Tonto
for him to catch us.
Doug Dimick
Maybe it's our only chance.
Hayes Morgan
Then I reckon we better take it.
Narrator/Storyteller
An hour later, in camp in the Arrowhead Hills, the sound of approaching riders wakened the Lone Ranger. The masked man listened for a moment, then tossed aside his blanket and called, otto Me wake.
Tonto
Savvy?
The Lone Ranger
Those riders are heading this way.
Tonto
Me not savvy. Why don't come here.
The Lone Ranger
Neither do I. But we will not risk being taken by surprise. Come on. We'll move back into the trees and watch for them.
Narrator/Storyteller
From their place of concealment. The Lone Ranger and Tottle waited until three riders came into view. As they drew rein in the moonlit clearing, Toto exclaimed one fellow.
Tonto
Wear lawman bags.
Narrator/Storyteller
Toto.
The Lone Ranger
It's sudden. Dean,
Doug Dimick
get those triggers.
The Lone Ranger
There's no need to come and get us. Marshall. Dean, you both coming?
Doug Dimick
Don't try a fast move.
The Lone Ranger
That's no way to greet old friends.
Doug Dimick
Great shot.
The Lone Ranger
Ask your hands, mister. Got your tight out here with a $50,000.
Doug Dimick
Hold it, boys. This man's a Lone Ranger.
Tonto
Lone Ranger?
Doug Dimick
And his friend is Tuttle.
The Lone Ranger
Thanks for the identification, Sutton.
Marshal Sutton Dean
Downright sorry we busted into your camp like this, mister.
The Lone Ranger
You must have had a good reason.
Marshal Sutton Dean
$50,000 in paper money was stolen off in the express office in town today. The thieves shot the watchman.
The Lone Ranger
Why did you come here?
Marshal Sutton Dean
Bimmick and his friend Hayes told us
Tonto
they saw a mass splattered an engine
Doug Dimick
come from the express office after the shooting.
Marshal Sutton Dean
If I'd a known YouTuber in the hills, I'd have caught him.
Doug Dimick
Liars on the spot.
The Lone Ranger
We made camp this evening to repair a broken cinch.
Marshal Sutton Dean
I heard you captured a couple of
Doug Dimick
killers over in Jackson County.
The Lone Ranger
We left there two days ago.
Doug Dimick
Chad, how would you and Tanu like to ride back to town with Fine.
The Lone Ranger
I'd like a chance to question Dimick and his friends.
Tonto
Ah, and me want meat. Fellas who say we steal money and shoot watchmen.
The Lone Ranger
Come on, Tado. The Saddle Scout and Silver.
Narrator/Storyteller
Lone Ranger Toto, Sutton, Dean and the two deputies were a short distance from town when one of the men who had been left with Rep. Martin rode toward them. As soon as he saw the deputy
Wheaties Supporter
Marshall, Dean signaled a halt.
Doug Dimick
Hey, it's Tom Beach.
Tonto
Tom, what are you doing here?
The Lone Ranger
Why'd you leave?
Doug Dimick
Rev?
The Lone Ranger
Martin?
Reb Martin
Martine, I've got to talk to you about.
Doug Dimick
Hey, mask man, he's a friend of
Marshal Sutton Dean
mine, so speak up.
Tonto
What are you doing here?
Reb Martin
Rev regained consciousness. He said Doug Gimmick and Hay shot him and robbed the express office.
Doug Dimick
Did you get Hazen Dybbick?
Reb Martin
That's what I want to tell you. I went to the cabin to arrest them, but they cleared out.
Marshal Sutton Dean
As you've expected.
Doug Dimick
I looked all over town for him.
Reb Martin
Then, just as the eastbound train was pulling out of the station, I saw him climbing aboard. I tried to stop him, but the train was already underway. I didn't have a chance with $50,000 in stolen cash.
The Lone Ranger
How long ago did the train leave?
Reb Martin
Pulled out at daybreak half an hour ago.
The Lone Ranger
That means it'll reach Big Bear pass in about 45 minutes.
Marshal Sutton Dean
Yes, that's right. It travels a winding road on account
Doug Dimick
of the hills and mountains.
The Lone Ranger
I'll try to stop it at the
Doug Dimick
pass, but you can't get there ahead of the train?
The Lone Ranger
I can if I follow the railroad tracks. But by riding cross country I may be able to make it.
Reb Martin
Friend of yours or non?
Hayes Morgan
Marshal Dean.
Reb Martin
That gents local if he thinks he'll reach the pass in time to stop the train.
Marshal Sutton Dean
If he can't do it, no one can. Come on.
Doug Dimick
We're right after him.
Narrator/Storyteller
About 40 minutes after the train left Monument City, Doug Dimick leaned back in his seat with a self satisfied grin. While his partner Hayes Morgan looked out the window anxiously.
Doug Dimick
Sit back and relax, Hayes.
Hayes Morgan
I'll feel a lot better when there's a couple of hundred miles between us and Monument City.
Tonto
We've nothing to worry about.
The Lone Ranger
Out now.
Hayes Morgan
As soon as Web talks, Marshall Dean
Tonto
will start looking for us.
Doug Dimick
You'll have to look a long way. This train doesn't stop till it reaches Kansas City.
Hayes Morgan
I wish it didn't stop this side of the Canadian border.
Doug Dimick
Sudden.
Dean will be downright riled when he finds out we got away with the express money.
Tonto
Doug, look out the window.
Hayes Morgan
See that rider coming downhill? He's angling toward the tracks.
Doug Dimick
He's traveling fast.
Reb Martin
Doug.
Hayes Morgan
He's masked.
Tonto
Sure.
Hayes Morgan
See for yourself. It's the same masked man we saw in the Arrowhead Hills. I saw that white horse brown hitched in his camp.
Wheaties Supporter
You're right, my old savvy.
Doug Dimick
Why he's heading for the tracks.
Hayes Morgan
If he keeps going as he is, he'll be directly in front of the train. When he reaches the tracks, he'll try
Tonto
to stop the train.
Hayes Morgan
Doug, maybe he's after us. Maybe he wants to get square with us for framing.
Doug Dimick
More likely he's trying to get away from Marshall being in a posse. Come on. Bring that carpet bag with the money.
Tonto
Where are you going?
Doug Dimick
We'll climb over the top of the baggage car to the engine tender.
Wheaties Supporter
The engineer and the fireman had also
Narrator/Storyteller
seen the Lone Ranger. With his hand on the throttle, engineer
Wheaties Supporter
Fireball Murphy watched the hard riding masked man. As the mighty stallion drew closer to the speeding engine. The young fireman shouted Murphy.
The Lone Ranger
Then out trying to stop at the shore shooting. Murph, did you hear me? You better get all the speed you can out of this engine, Jack. I've seen that gent somewhere before. Gang of train robbers must be waiting on the tracks ahead. He signaled us to stop. Don't risk it, Murf. Only last week the Union Pacific west found was stopped by Jack, that's what. Now I know who he is. I met him three years ago when I was working for the Union Pacific. Murf, what are you doing? I'M stopping this fire eater. But you can't mur head against the crook. Yeah, Jughead. He's the Lone Ranger. Great sake alive. Did you have to stop the sudden
Doug Dimick
hold over how easy Teddy be.
The Lone Ranger
Hi there, Mr. Fireball Murphy. Surprised to see me, huh?
I'm glad to see you. Any other engineer would have questioned my mask.
Doug Dimick
Easy. Steady, big fella.
Wheaties Supporter
Come aboard.
Doug Dimick
Thanks.
The Lone Ranger
That plan to.
What's the trouble?
Doug Dimick
I'm looking for two men who boarded
The Lone Ranger
the train in Monument City. One's named Dimmick, the other's Hayes Morgan.
They're right here, Mr. Cover.
Narrator/Storyteller
The occupants of the engine cab turned
Wheaties Supporter
and saw the outlaws standing in the half empty engine tender with guns drawn.
The Lone Ranger
Get your hands up, sir. You're after us, huh?
Yes. I want the money you stole from the express office in Monument City.
I told you he was after us.
Doug Dimick
Doug, jump down to the cab and take the masked man's gun's haze.
Tonto
Right.
The Lone Ranger
Doug, what's eating you?
Doug Dimick
Get his gun.
Wheaties Supporter
Look, Doug Demic turned and saw Toto Sutton Dean and the posse riding toward the tracks from the hills. But he didn't see the Lone Ranger's lightning fast draw. When he looked back at the masked man a split second later, twin Colts were level to fire. Before Doug could shoot, the Lone Ranger's gun drawed. Silver bullets smashed the weapons in the outlaw's hands. Doug lost his balance and fell to the floor of the tender.
The Lone Ranger
Just like all you. Smash their guns, Mr.
Doug Dimick
Bygone. I'll get you here.
The Lone Ranger
Try a fast move and you'll stop a bullet.
My hands are up. Don't shoot.
Doug Dimick
Raise yours.
The Lone Ranger
Do as he says, Tug. We're licked.
That's good advice.
We're lucky he didn't kill us for braming. All right, all right. I give up.
Keep your hands high.
Doug Dimick
Hey, mister, did you get the polecats?
The Lone Ranger
They're right here, Sutton.
Good work. Come on down here, man.
Doug Dimick
Out of the Indian, boy.
The Lone Ranger
Bring your handcuff right here. Marshal.
Doug Dimick
You're both under arrest for stealing the express money shooting Rip Martin.
The Lone Ranger
If you search the carpet bag Hayes was carrying, you may find the money. Martin.
Doug Dimick
I'll search.
Reb Martin
And Marshall Deed.
Tonto
Go ahead, Peach.
Marshal Sutton Dean
I'm downright obliged to you, mister.
Doug Dimick
You hadn't come here and stopped this train, those skunks would have gotten away.
The Lone Ranger
Fireball Murphy deserves the thanks, Sutton. If he hadn't stopped, we wouldn't have captured these men.
Oh, don't thank me, Mr. Fitz. I'm downright glad of the chance to see you again.
Reb Martin
Carpet bags filled with paper currency that's what we want.
Doug Dimick
Pets, press office money.
The Lone Ranger
Now that you have the money in the prisoners out on our return to camp when we left our gear, Marshal,
Marshal Sutton Dean
I hope I'll see you again before you leave these parts.
The Lone Ranger
We'll not leave without saying goodbye. And adios, Fireball.
Adios. Anytime I can help you, mister, just let me know. I was loco to listen to you, Doug. If I'd had any brains, I'd never
Hayes Morgan
gone along with your idea to frame that masked man.
Doug Dimick
You sure picked the wrong man when you tried to frame the Lone Ranger.
