The Lone Ranger
No Then one Saturday, a government employee named Clem Babson locked the door of the land office in Euchre Flats and headed for the livery stable. The thin, wispy haired clerk looked at the clear sky overhead and grinned with pleasure as he contemplated the luxury of an afternoon to himself.
Narrator
Ah, it's a fine day.
The Lone Ranger
An excellent day to pursue a hobby far more interesting to Clem than the routine task of recording gold claims for men who had struck it rich. Clem was a frustrated soldier at heart, too small and frail to qualify for the army. He contented himself collecting relics of historic battles, and this afternoon promised to be particularly rewarding. He was passing Sheriff Tim Dare's office when the lawman called through the open door.
Lefty Chance
Hi there, Clear.
Narrator
Hello, Tim. I'm on my way to rent a horse.
Tonto
Planning to leave town on your day off?
Narrator
Only half a day, Tim. A fellow who's done a lot of Injun fighting with the cavalry was in the office this morning.
Tonto
Yeah, what about it?
Narrator
He said the engines and the army fought a couple of big battles up in Desolation Hills about 20 years ago.
Gabe Anchor
That's right, they did.
Narrator
I've never looked for relics up there, so I plan to spend this afternoon and tomorrow searching the place.
Tonto
For what?
Narrator
Arrowheads, canteen, sabers, shells, guns, whatever I can find.
Tonto
I'll never savvy why you don't spend your spare time looking for something worthwhile instead of digging through battlefields like an addle headed gopher.
Narrator
What do you mean worthwhile?
Tonto
Hell, there's no one around here who knows more about ore than you do. Gold Bear Noar.
Narrator
You want me to turn prospector, huh?
Tonto
You'll never get rich this way.
Narrator
I've never heard of an honest lawman getting rich either, Tim. I'll see you when I get back to town.
Tonto
Hey, stop at my place for coffee and some of Mary's homemade donuts on your way home.
Narrator
Thanks, I'll do that.
The Lone Ranger
It was nearly 2 o' clock when Clem reached the rocky area known as Desolation Hills, north of town. For more than an hour he studied the ground, intent on the search for mementos of battle, leaving his rented horse ground Hitch nearby. He was examining a dry creek bed carefully. The rays of the sun glinted on a shiny object at his feet. He picked it up and gasped.
Narrator
Gold.
The Lone Ranger
Putting the nugget into his pocket, Clem took out his pocket knife.
Narrator
I wonder if there's more here.
Gabe Anchor
Get it on there.
Narrator
Get it. Get it.
The Lone Ranger
Some distance south of the site where Clem made his discovery, two down and out petty thieves named Gabe Anchor and Lefty Chance were traveling through the hills. Having been run out of towns to the south, they hoped to better themselves in Euchre Flats. Tired, dusty and hungry, Lefty Chance grumbled.
Lefty Chance
I'm dead red and thirsty, Gabe.
Gabe Anchor
Don't look at me. My canteen's empty.
Lefty Chance
How much further do we have to travel to reach Yucca Flats?
Gabe Anchor
3, 4 hours will get us there. The horses are too near worn out to make it a mustime.
Lefty Chance
On top of being worn out, mine's got a loose shoe.
Narrator
Hey, cheer up, Lefty.
Lefty Chance
There's a water hole ahead. Huh?
Tonto
Where?
Gabe Anchor
You see the sun shining on the water?
Lefty Chance
Yeah.
Tonto
Good.
Lefty Chance
Get him.
Narrator
Come get him.
Lefty Chance
Horses are thirsty.
Gabe Anchor
We'll water them after we fill the canteen. Yeah.
Lefty Chance
Water's warm, but at least it's wet.
Tonto
It's good.
Gabe Anchor
Yeah, let the horses at it.
Lefty Chance
Looks like they were plenty dry.
Gabe Anchor
I'm glad we found this place. Hey, what's that?
Lefty Chance
Hammering of some kind.
Gabe Anchor
Not too far away from here either.
Lefty Chance
I didn't see anybody when we drew rain.
Gabe Anchor
With boulders the size of these around, it's hard to see anyone.
Lefty Chance
It don't savvy why a fellow tried building anything in this place. Come here, Lefty.
Narrator
Huh?
Gabe Anchor
Around the side of the boul. But that's what we heard.
Lefty Chance
Philip hunting a stake in the ground.
Gabe Anchor
Yeah, I reckon he didn't hear a straw rain.
Lefty Chance
Look, he's fastening a paper to the stake.
Gabe Anchor
Abe. I wonder how much cash he's carrying.
Lefty Chance
He might have some grub in his saddlebags.
Gabe Anchor
Just what I was thinking. Come on, we'll help ourselves to his money and supplies.
The Lone Ranger
Clem Babson, pounded into the ground, bore a carefully lettered paper claiming the legal amount of blend permitted anyone staking a claim. After years of working in the land office recording other men's claims, Clem himself had found gold. Dazed by his unexpected good fortune, he turned from the state.
Narrator
Unless I'm badly mistaken, this is a mighty rich strike.
Lefty Chance
You there.
Narrator
What?
Lefty Chance
We want to talk to you.
The Lone Ranger
Long experience in the land office had taught the mild mannered government clerk all that could be learned about claim jumpers. Fearing that the two strangers might Try to steal his strike. Clem reached for his holster. Gabe saw the move. He snatched his gun.
Lefty Chance
Get him, Gabe.
Gabe Anchor
That junk had went for his gun.
Lefty Chance
You hit him, all right. Is he dead?
Gabe Anchor
I'll see he's not moving.
Lefty Chance
Hey, he's hurt bad, Gabe. He'll be gone in a couple of minutes. Your bullet hit him in the head.
Gabe Anchor
He shouldn't have tried to draw.
Lefty Chance
If he does, we'll be hunted for murder.
Gabe Anchor
We might be if anyone had seen us shoot him. If he's got any cash, I'll look in his saddlebag for gravity.
Lefty Chance
All right, but I don't like being mixed up in the shooting.
Gabe Anchor
He asked for it.
Lefty Chance
Yeah, maybe so, but.
Gabe Anchor
Hey, what's wrong?
Lefty Chance
Hey, look. Look what he had in his pocket.
Gabe Anchor
Money.
Lefty Chance
It's gold, Gabe. Gold nuggets.
Narrator
God.
Gabe Anchor
See if he has any more of them.
Lefty Chance
He had stake in the ground. We'd like to see what he wrote on the paper he fastened to it.
Gabe Anchor
What's that got to do with it?
Lefty Chance
It's just what I figured. Look, Gabe, it's a claim notice. He was taking a claim here. That's why he was pounding a stake in the ground.
Narrator
The notice proves it.
Lefty Chance
See, here's the date today and the time.
Gabe Anchor
You're right.
Lefty Chance
I'll bet 10 years of my life he found the nuggets here. God take him.
Gabe Anchor
Yeah.
Lefty Chance
This is our lucky day, Gabe.
Gabe Anchor
We'll get as much gold as we can find.
Lefty Chance
We'll do better than that. We'll get all the gold that's here. We'll jump his claim.
The Lone Ranger
Leaving Clem Babson where he had fallen, the two thieves swung to the saddle and raced toward town. Half an hour later, Lefty's tired horse was slowing visibly.
Gabe Anchor
Can't you get any more speed out of that critter?
Lefty Chance
Come on, you miserable piece of buzzard bait.
Narrator
Get up there.
Gabe Anchor
Nah, he's slowing down.
Narrator
Lefty, get up there. Come on.
Gabe Anchor
He's Johnny, and he can't keep up the pace.
Lefty Chance
Ho, ho. Ho, ho, ho. Critter's not only worn out, he's got a loose shoe. Should have left him back at the claim and taken the other fella's horse.
Gabe Anchor
It's just as well you didn't take that gray. Someone in town might recognize it.
Lefty Chance
Well, what do we do now?
Gabe Anchor
My Chestnut will be able to make it to Yucca Flats. I'll go on to the land office to register the claim.
Lefty Chance
Well, what about me?
Gabe Anchor
You'd better go back to the claim now, get rid of that fella's body and Turn his horse loose.
Lefty Chance
Where am I going? To get rid of the body.
Narrator
We've no tools for burying it.
Gabe Anchor
I don't care what you do with it, as long as it's out of sight. After I register the claim, I'll head back there.
Lefty Chance
All right. Bring some supplies with you. I'm half starved.
Gabe Anchor
I'll see you later.
Narrator
Get it. Get it. Come on.
Lefty Chance
One of these days I'll buy myself a good horse. The finest in these parts. All right. Come on, you foreman.
Narrator
Get up.
The Lone Ranger
Meanwhile, the Lone Ranger and his Indian friend Tahoe are riding through the Desolation Hills toward Euchre Flats. The masked man planned to wait outside town while Toto bought the supplies they needed. As they passed near the spot where Clem had found gold, Tonto exclaimed, imusabi, look.
Tonto
That man's trying to mount. Look like him hurt. We'll try to help him.
Narrator
Mops. Coward.
The Lone Ranger
We'll continue our Lone Ranger adventure in just a moment.

The Lone Ranger
With the light of the setting sun shining in his pain dimmed eyes, Clem Babson didn't notice the Lone Ranger's mask until the tall man had dismounted.
Tonto
He'd been wounded.
The Lone Ranger
Hang on to saddle Pummel.
Tonto
Just stand up. We'd like to help you.
Narrator
Your mask.
Tonto
Take it easy. We're not outlaws.
Narrator
You're crooks, just like those other two.
Tonto
Steady.
The Lone Ranger
Look out.
Tonto
I've got him. Let go. Saddle to grab gun.
Lefty Chance
I've nothing left to steal.
Narrator
Two skunks already jumped my claim.
Tonto
We're here to help you, not rob you. Now sit down. I'll take a look at your wound.
Narrator
You don't talk like a crook. But that mask.
Tonto
Forget the mask. Here. Medicine kit. King of Abstot.
Lefty Chance
Open here.
Tonto
Canteen. Now you take drink.
Narrator
Thanks. Injun I would like a drink. Who shot you two fellers? I never saw either one of them before, but I'll never forget the looks of them. One of them's tall, has a heavy black beard, Wears a checkered shirt and dungarees.
Tonto
What about the other one?
Narrator
He's a redhead, a little taller than I am, thanks to the canteen.
Tonto
All right.
Narrator
How bad am I hurt, mister?
Tonto
It's a scalp wound. I'll have the bandage in place in just a minute. You said the men who shot you were strangers.
Narrator
That's right. But I've got their names.
Gabe Anchor
Huh?
Tonto
How you get names?
Narrator
I've got them here on this piece of paper they left fastened to the stake I put in the ground. I found it when I came to.
Tonto
I noticed the stake when we stopped.
Narrator
I found gold here this afternoon. I no sooner finished staking claim to it than those two rattlers appeared. When I saw this paper, I knew what happened. They copied what I wrote in their own handwriting, stuck it on the stake and went into town.
Tonto
Claim jumpers, huh?
Narrator
Yep. One's named Lefty Chance. His partner's Gabe Anchor.
Tonto
There. That takes care of your wound, Mr. Babson.
Narrator
Clem Babson. I'm the land office agent in Euchre Flats.
Tonto
Land office agent?
Narrator
That's right.
Tonto
You register gold claims in land office?
Narrator
Yes. Yes, it's a one man office engine. I've worked there for two years.
Tonto
That good joke on crooks, huh? Crooks get big surprise when them try and register a claim.
Narrator
Say, that's right. I. I never thought of that. Doggone it.
Tonto
They may be on their way to town now to register the claim.
Narrator
Wouldn't be surprised. They have no way of knowing who I am. Fact is, they've probably left me for dead.
Tonto
I hear tracks on ground. One fella ride horse with loose shoe. The tracks probably lead to Euchre Flats. You feel strong enough to ride?
Narrator
Oh, yeah.
Tonto
Yeah.
Narrator
I feel a lot better now, thanks to you two.
Tonto
You'd better report what happened to the sheriff.
Narrator
I'll do that, mister. Now tell him how you and the engine helped me.
Tonto
Here, I'll help you to mount.
Narrator
Thanks. Thanks. There.
Tonto
We'll ride with him. Kano. And follow these tracks.
Narrator
Nami.
Tonto
Easy, big fellow. Get him up.
Narrator
Skill.
The Lone Ranger
Dusk was falling rapidly when the three riders saw a horseman coming toward them. Clem Babson studied him for a moment, then exclaimed.
Narrator
It's one of those crooks. The red headed fellow who shot me.
Tonto
Are you sure?
Narrator
Dead sure.
Lefty Chance
Him see it?
Narrator
He recognizes me. See him turning his horse?
Tonto
He can't get way.
Narrator
Don't let him get away. Stop him. Come on, Silver. Get the scut. Don't let him get away. He's a crook. I'm no good.
The Lone Ranger
Killer Almighty. Silver pulled a of Clem and Toto as Lefty spurred his nearly exhausted drone. Having recognized Clem, he knew capture was inevitable unless he could escape. A quick look over his shoulder at the powerful white stallion panicked Lefty. He drew his gun and tried to fire accurately at the Lone Ranger. But the shots were wild. He saw the Lone Ranger pick up his lariat.
Tonto
Go, Ranger.
Lefty Chance
I'll pull you through the saddle. I'll kill you.
Tonto
Not unless you stop to take aim.
The Lone Ranger
The lariat army through the air. Lefty dodged to escape the loop. But it settled over his shoulders and before he could free himself, he was jerked from the saddle. As he hit the ground, his weary horse slowed to a halt. While the masked man dismounted and hurried to Lefty's side. Tonto and Clem drew rein.
Lefty Chance
I'm hurt.
Tonto
Stand up.
Lefty Chance
I must have broken every bone in my body.
Tonto
Good. And we'll tie his hands behind his back.
Narrator
You the old good claims yovin rat left me for dead, didn't you?
Lefty Chance
I didn't shoot you. It was my partner, Gabe. He's the one who gunned you.
Narrator
If Gabe's your partner, you must be Lefty Chance.
Lefty Chance
How do you know?
Narrator
I got your name off the claim notice you left on the stake where I found my gold.
Lefty Chance
You can't prove we jumped your claim.
Narrator
I won't have to.
Lefty Chance
The gold's ours. My partner's in town now filing legal claim to it.
Narrator
How's he gonna file legal claim to it with the land office closed?
Lefty Chance
Hey, Matarizi office. Before it closed.
Narrator
He couldn't have. The office closed at noon. That's right. And it's not due to open till Monday morning at 9 o'.
Gabe Anchor
Clock.
Lefty Chance
Maybe Gabe found the land office agent. Maybe he talked him into opening the office special.
Narrator
I'm the land office agent.
Lefty Chance
What?
Narrator
He'd have to go some to talk me into registering his claim to my gold. I'll search you right now for the nugget you stole from me.
Tonto
You?
Lefty Chance
You're the land office agent?
Tonto
It looks like you and your partner tried to jump the wrong claim.
Lefty Chance
All a dead Reddit.
Narrator
And here are my nuggets.
Lefty Chance
Now listen, I didn't mean any harm. I wasn't the one to shot you.
Narrator
Save your lies. You were probably on your way back to the claim right now to make.
Gabe Anchor
Sure I was dead.
Narrator
If the Masked man and Injun hadn't been with me, you'd have finished me for sure.
Lefty Chance
Oh, that's not true.
Narrator
I can explain.
Tonto
Save your explanation for the sheriff. You're going to jail.
The Lone Ranger
In Euchre Flats, Gabe Anchor had already discovered that the land office was locked for the day. Confident that he had nothing to fear from the local law, he entered Sheriff Tim Dare's office to inquire.
Gabe Anchor
Sheriff, where'll I find the land office agent?
Tonto
He's out of town as far as I know, stranger.
Gabe Anchor
Why, I have a claim to register. I've looked all over town for him.
Tonto
And like I said, he's not in town.
Gabe Anchor
If I'd known that, I wouldn't have wasted so much time looking for him.
Tonto
What's your name, stranger?
Gabe Anchor
Gay banker.
Tonto
You've found gold?
Gabe Anchor
My partner and I discovered it. I'm downright anxious to get a register.
Tonto
But as well relax till Monday morning gab. The land office will be open then at 9 o'. Clock.
Gabe Anchor
Well, if I've got to wait till then, I reckon there's not much I can do.
Tonto
Hey, Jim, sounds like the agent's coming here.
Gabe Anchor
Now, Gabe, you think he'd open the office long enough to register my claim?
Narrator
Tim, I've got a shooting to report. And acclaimed Jumping Rattler attorney in you.
The Lone Ranger
As Clem Babson entered the office, Gabe snatched his gun from the holster. Before he could fire, Sheriff Tim D. Grabbed his arms.
Lefty Chance
Cid, you jughead.
Narrator
You crook. You dirty claim jumper.
Tonto
Step inside, Lefty, and remember, you're covered.
Lefty Chance
All right.
Narrator
Repped again, Gabe? No, no. Oh, all right, all right.
Lefty Chance
Let go.
Tonto
My arm.
Narrator
Sheriff. Gabe.
Gabe Anchor
Lefty, what happened?
Lefty Chance
I was counting on you to help me.
Tonto
Gabe, who's your mask man?
Narrator
He and Tono are friends of mine. They saved my life with that mask. The mask doesn't mean this gentle crook these two are. Lefty, you bungling jughead. How'd you get caught? I thought you were going back to bury this critter.
Lefty Chance
Me and the masked man and the engine met me on a trail. Before I knew what happened, I was halting the saddle hogtied and disarmed.
Narrator
They tried to kill me, Tim. What? That bearded critter shot me.
Tonto
Well, in that case I put them both behind bars. Come on, you two.
Lefty Chance
Now you don't have to push me. I'm going lucky. If you hadn't done with your punishment, I should have.
Tonto
Well, Clem, that takes care of the claim jumpers.
Narrator
I reckon it does, mister. Thanks to you and Tono. I'll not forget what you've done for me either. I'll start working my claim and see that you get a sizable reward.
Tonto
Seeing you well enough to enjoy your good fortune is reward enough. Clem. I hope we meet again.
Narrator
Hold on. Where are you going?
Tonto
We're heading north as soon as Connor picks up the supplies we need. Easy said he. Big fellow, Nadios.
Narrator
But doggone it.
Tonto
Well. Me go get supplies, then meet mask from edge of town.
Narrator
It's a good thing it's dark. No one will notice his mask and mistake him for a crook.
Tonto
Isn't that right, Turner?
Narrator
I'd like to do something for you and him.
Tonto
Me glad we able to help you.
Narrator
I know you're planning to shove on, but couldn't I send the reward somewhere to be held for you? If my claim turns out to be as good as I think it will, I'll be a rich man.
Tonto
You not first fella who try reward Lone Ranger.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger?
Tonto
That's right, Clem.
Narrator
Great jumping grasshoppers. Is that who he is?
Tonto
Well, any use, Clem.
Narrator
What?
Tonto
And we wish you plenty good luck with gold claims.
Narrator
Goodbye.
Tonto
What you had about a gold claim?
Narrator
Yeah, I found gold this afternoon, Tim.
Host 2
Gold?
Narrator
Yep. I've struck it rich.
Tonto
That's the best news I've ever heard, Clem. I told you you should have spent your time looking for gold instead of those worthless old relics no one would want.
Narrator
Oh, fine relic hunter I am, Tim. I just missed a chance to get a silver bullet from the Lone Ranger.

Episode Title: Gold Is Where You Find It | The Lone Ranger (08-29-51)
In the captivating episode titled "Gold Is Where You Find It" from the Old Time Radio Westerns podcast, host Andrew Rhynes brings to life a timeless adventure featuring the legendary Lone Ranger and his loyal companion, Tonto. This digitally restored classic Western radio drama immerses listeners in a thrilling tale of discovery, deceit, and justice on the rugged frontiers of the American West.
The episode unfolds in Euchre Flats, a small frontier town where Clem Babson, a government land office clerk, leads a seemingly mundane life. Clem harbors a passion for collecting relics from historic battles, a hobby that keeps him content despite his unfulfilled soldierly aspirations. One sunny afternoon, while searching for battle mementos in the nearby Desolation Hills, Clem stumbles upon a significant gold nugget, marking the beginning of an unexpected turn of events.
Unbeknownst to Clem, two unscrupulous individuals, Gabe Anchor and Lefty Chance, notorious petty thieves and claim jumpers, are also traversing the Desolation Hills. Driven by desperation and greed, they learn of Clem's recent gold discovery and hastily approach him with deceitful intentions. A confrontation ensues, resulting in Clem being shot and left for dead.
Just as the situation seems dire, the heroic Lone Ranger and Tonto arrive on the scene. Demonstrating courage and justice, they intervene to apprehend the culprits, restoring peace to Euchre Flats. The episode beautifully encapsulates themes of integrity, bravery, and the relentless pursuit of justice emblematic of Western folklore.
