The building of the first transcontinental railroad was one of the most important factors in the winning of the West. The railroad was of prime importance to the future of the country, but powerful forces, cattlemen, stagecoach lines and steamship companies opposed it. Outlaw opposition sprang up and the Lone Ranger was commissioned by the President to lead the fight against the enemies of progress. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse.
Lone Ranger
Silver.
Narrator
The Long Ranger rides again.
Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. The hang for St. Joe. Silver.
Narrator
The government was building a railroad straight from Omaha west across the plains and the Rocky Mountains all the way to the Pacific Coast. A ribbon of steel to tie the country together. And all over the country, railroad men were busy getting workers to do the grading, to lay the rails and hammer the spikes into the ties. Just outside the sprawling town of St. Joseph, Missouri, close to the river, a railroad agent named Dan Kincaid was talking to a group of men.
Lone Ranger
Yes, sir, that's what I'm telling you. You'll get good pay and good food. Sign up to work for the railroad and you'll see the west clear out to the buffalo country. Yeah, mister, but what about Indian? Don't you worry about engines, partner. Colonel Parkman's in charge of the construction job. He's had plenty of fighting experience. And he's got specially trained soldiers to handle the Crow or the Sioux or any band of redskins. You tell him, Kincaid. Who cares about Injuns anyhow? I fought at the Battle of the Wilderness. Reckon I can drop a pickaxe and
Tonto (alternate lines)
use a rifle anytime.
Lone Ranger
Mister, you're the kind of hombre we want. Come on now. Everybody just step right up and sign. Work for the railroad. Reckon you can count me in, mister. Now, how about the rest of you? The main outfit is up at Omaha. The tracks are already laid as far as Fort Kearney. Sign up now and you get a steamboat ride on the River Queen up to Omaha. Then you ride by trains at the end of the line. Mister, it takes cash to ride the steamboat. I can't afford it. Afford it, partner? It's free. Every man who signs up here now doesn't pay a copper to ride the River Queen. The railroad pays all transportation. I think you gents are local.
Dan Kincaid
Me?
Lone Ranger
I'm heading for California. There's gold in California. A man can dig up more gold in an hour than can make in a year swinging a pick on the Central Pacific. Don't be a fool, mister. If you chase after gold, you chase a shatter. There's more men starved to death looking for gold than was killed in the whole Civil War. I'll sign up with the railroad. Good food, good pay. And you get paid every week. Sign up. Come on, sign up for the railroad. Hey, hey, look out, gents. Here comes a flock of cowhands looking for trouble. What's going on here? Camp eaten. Rein up your horses. Get away. This is a peaceable me. All like peaceable me. Get away. Get away. We're loing for bear. We'll step eaten wild cats and we show in our claws. All right, turn over that table, Jeffs. Write them down. Make them bag.
Tonto
There's a river below us, Cuddo. It shines in the moonlight. Ah, it looked plenty quiet several miles above St. Joe. Ms. Barkley ought to be somewhere near here.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Oh, me not see her. He Miss Honey.
Tonto
That's Miss Barkley's signal, Toto. This way. Come on, Silver.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Looks out.
Lone Ranger
You see ground up ahead, Toto, you
Tonto
notice that patch of cottonwood beside the river?
Lone Ranger
But look beyond it. Look.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That right.
Lone Ranger
You see Horse and Ryder.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That Ms. Barkley.
Slade
Teddy.
Tonto
Silver.
Lone Ranger
Teddy boy.
Slade
Hello, Ms. Barkley.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Hi.
Ms. Barkley
Good to see you again. Lone Ranger.
Tonto
You're a long way from Omaha.
Ms. Barkley
Yes, I came on one of the down river trips aboard the paddle steamer. There's been trouble in St. Joe.
Tonto
I knew there must be trouble. Otherwise it wouldn't have been necessary if you'd have come to this meeting place we'd arranged.
Ms. Barkley
You've been here every night?
Tonto
Just at this time, Listening for you as we decided.
Ms. Barkley
I knew you'd hear me.
Tonto
What's wrong with St. Joe?
Ms. Barkley
Dan Kincaid, one of our employment agents for the railroad, held a meeting yesterday. To hire more men? Yes, A group of wild riding cow punchers broke the meeting up. Shooting off their guns and yelling like Indians.
Tonto
Shooting. Anyone hurt?
Ms. Barkley
Not with bullets. Masked man. They fired into the air. But a few were ridden down by horses. Kincaid has a bruise on his arm as big as a horseshoe.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That not real trouble. Cowhands not mean to make trouble.
Ms. Barkley
That's where you're wrong, Tonto. At least according to Kincaid.
Tonto
What do you mean?
Ms. Barkley
Well, Dan is certain it was part of an organized plot to break up the hiring of men.
Tonto
Plot against the railroad?
Ms. Barkley
You know, there are powerful interests that don't want to see the railroad completed. The stagecoach lines, the big cattlemen, the steamship owners.
Tonto
Yes, the Triangle. But they're honest men. They wouldn't stoop to unlawful means.
Ms. Barkley
Perhaps not, but there may be one or two of them that aren't honest.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Oh, I see that plenty bad.
Ms. Barkley
The railroad needs thousands of men. If this goes on, Colonel Parkman says he won't have enough to lift a length of rail.
Tonto
Where is Dan Kincaid now?
Ms. Barkley
He's staying at the Missouri Hotel. That's on the edge of town.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Thomas Happy?
Tonto
Where?
Tonto (alternate lines)
Hotel is good.
Tonto
And we'll say adios, Ms. Barclay. Hal and I are going to ride into St. Joe now.
Ms. Barkley
But your mess.
Tonto
It's late at night. We'll be careful.
Ms. Barkley
Oh, you don't know how much it means to the railroad having you help us.
Tonto
The railroad means a lot to our country, Ms. Barclay. Without it, the land along the Pacific might become a separate nation. That must never happen. Tell Colonel Parkman he'll get his men.
Slade
Adios.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Adios.
Lone Ranger
Get along, scout. Goodbye.
Ms. Barkley
The Lone Ranger. Somehow I'm sure he'll help. Dan Kincaid.
Dan Kincaid
Sure gave me a start, waking me up in the dark. Mister, from what you see, I reckon you're a friend.
Tonto
Hello's below the balcony with the horses. Tell me the rest. There isn't much time.
Dawson
Kino.
Dan Kincaid
Like I was saying, I've got a feeling that little raid by those cowhands was planned in advance.
Tonto
Who was their leader?
Dan Kincaid
I don't know. It all happened too fast.
Tonto
Then what makes you suspect?
Dan Kincaid
The way one of the gents listening to me was acting.
Tonto
One of your listeners? Yeah.
Dan Kincaid
I found out his name later. A fellow named Slade. No matter how loud I talked, he was always busted in with talk about engines or how much easier it was to make money prospecting for gold than working on the railroad. And what's more, as soon as those cow punchers rode up, he joined in with them, knocking over tables, scattering the blanks for hiring, shouting and yelling.
Tonto
Slade, huh? He's here in St. Joe?
Dan Kincaid
Yeah. Spends most of his time across the street in the river gambling hall. You can't mistake him. He's got a scar mark on his face like. Like a spur.
Tonto
Kincaid, how's your shoulder?
Narrator
Huh?
Tonto
That bruise.
Dan Kincaid
You sure know a heap, mister. I won't ask you where he learned it, though. I'm a might stiff, but that's all.
Tonto
And you're not giving up.
Dan Kincaid
Giving up? Mister, Colonel Parkman sent me out to hire men. You can't build a railroad without workers. Before I give up, there won't be any water in the old Missouri.
Tonto
That's the way to talk, Kincaid.
Dan Kincaid
I'm starting in tomorrow and I'll get those men. I'll make right certain I hold the meetings where they can't be busted up anymore.
Tonto
And you can forget about Slade.
Dan Kincaid
I can.
Tonto
You can leave him to me.
Dan Kincaid
Aye. Savvy? The way you talk, I'd sure hate to be in Slade's boots. Thanks again, and yes. Who are you, Mister, there's a little moonlight coming in. I can make out your mast.
Tonto
Perhaps this will answer you.
Dan Kincaid
What's this? A bullet I don't sav why. Jumping fireboxes. It's a silver bullet. You're the Lone Ranger.
Tonto
We'll meet again, Kincaid.
Dan Kincaid
The Lone Ranger. Mister, it's sure an honor to uplaws.
Ms. Barkley
Get him.
Lone Ranger
What?
Dan Kincaid
In places.
Tonto
Hello. He's in trouble.
Lone Ranger
Where's my guns? I'll help you.
Dan Kincaid
Ow.
Lone Ranger
Mister. Dead center glass.
Slade
Adios.
Lone Ranger
Kim K. Give him my far mask, man. Hello. Hi. There's the outlaw up on the balcony. Look out. He's shepherd. You land right in saddle.
Tonto
Right for a tunnel. There.
Slade
Too many of them.
Lone Ranger
Come on. Get away. Pour a light out of get.
Dawson
Yeah, I came right out here as soon as it got light. Dawson. Those hombres outside the Missouri Hotel was a Lone Ranger and his engine part. Tyleno.
Slade
You sure that's late?
Dawson
Sure as I got a spur mark on my face. Like I told you, Dawson, I walked out of the river gambling house to get a breath of air.
Slade
You saw him, huh?
Dawson
Well, I seen the engine and the two horses. Caught a glimpse of a big gent hoisting himself over the balcony.
Slade
That was enough.
Dawson
It was for me. The masked man's white stallion couldn't be mistook. I've seen that horse before. You'd never forget him. So I figured right away the Ranger was calling on Kincaid. I hightailed back into the hall and yelled there was outlaws in town.
Slade
Mighty fast thinking, Slade. Mighty slick, too. You figured nobody would know the Lone Ranger?
Tonto
Yeah.
Dawson
All they'd see would be a mast hombre and an engine outlaw as far as they could see. So I got two dozen men boiling up, humming back their hammers ready to pour bullets.
Slade
Think any bullets hit him?
Tonto
Nah.
Dawson
The Lone Ranger sailed off that balcony like an eagle making a stoop. Lit right in the saddle and off they went. Too doggone fast for us to do a thing.
Slade
Then the Lone Ranger knows how much.
Dawson
That's what's worrying me.
Slade
He knows as much as Kincaid does More.
Dawson
Most likely he can put things together.
Slade
Well, we'll just have to worry about things as they come. Slade. Right now it's Kincaid. Has he left St. Joe?
Tonto
I don't know.
Slade
We sure busted his meat in high, wide and handsome yesterday.
Dawson
Don't signify a thing.
Slade
You think you'll keep trying?
Dawson
Well, he's no tenderfoot, Dawson. Kincaid don't give up easy.
Slade
It's our job to make him give up. That railroad's gotta be licked.
Dawson
Say, Dawson.
Tonto
Yeah?
Dawson
Who's paying us? I said, who's paying us?
Slade
What do you care? I'm handing you cash to do your best to prevent men from hiring out to the railroad. You got the cash. That's enough.
Dawson
You're being paid, too, aren't you?
Slade
Sure. Me and this whole crew of hombres dressed up like cowhands.
Dan Kincaid
What of it?
Dawson
Well, I'd like to know who the boss man is.
Slade
Slade, get this and get it straight. Don't ask questions.
Dawson
Oh, now, Dawson, you hear me?
Slade
Do you want your neck twisted some more?
Lone Ranger
Let go.
Slade
You savvy?
Tonto
Yeah, yeah.
Dawson
No more questions, Kino. I ain't curious no more.
Slade
Besides Slade, I don't know myself who's paying the cash. I just pick it up at a certain spot with orders, and that's all.
Dawson
Kino, I reckon I better head back to St. Joe and see what Kincaid's planning.
Slade
Yeah, Mosey.
Tonto
What in tarnishing the steamboat whistle?
Dawson
The River Queen. This must be one of Kincaid's tricks.
Lone Ranger
Hey, you chunks, hit the saddle.
Slade
Ride your horses.
Lone Ranger
We're heading for St. John. All right, folks, all right. There's been no damage to the steamboat. No fire, anything like that. The reason I had that whistle blown was to collect you men again. Recollect yesterday, my meeting was sort of busted up, but I'm going right ahead. I'm hiring men for the railroad. The River Queen's already taken plenty of men like yourselves up to Omaha to work on the railroad. I need 200 for this trip. Who's ready to hire? Count me in again, mister. I was going to sign yesterday when them cowpunchers rode in here. I ain't changed my mind.
Slade
So that's his scheme. Slate. I'll get the boys and bust this one up, too.
Dawson
Don't be loco, Dusty.
Tonto (alternate lines)
It's out here on a horse.
Dawson
You can't ride in on this.
Slade
Yeah, I reckon you're right. Come on, let's get out of here while we do some thinking.
Dawson
The way they're signing up, you'll have 200 men inside of a week.
Slade
Yeah. Once they leave on the boat for Omaha, there's nothing else we can do.
Tonto
That's what I'm saying. Can you picture how fast a gold rush would bust up this iron?
Slade
One side, mister? Oh, sure, sure. Come on, Slade. We'll head for the river. Gambling, Hal? I've been puzzling my brain, but I can't get any ideas about what's eating you.
Dawson
Slade just thought of something, huh? Don't you recollect what that stranger said as he was leaving a meeting?
Slade
Stranger?
Tonto
Yeah.
Dawson
Fellow you bumped into as we walked off the wharf. He said, can you picture how fast a gold rush would bust up this hiring.
Slade
Well, so what? I don't savvy how you slate. Yeah, that is an idea, but dandy.
Tonto
Hey, come on.
Slade
We got a week. Let's get the boys and get moving. This is one scheme not even the Lone Ranger can lick.
Narrator
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger story. Before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments.

Narrator
Now to continue our story. That evening, Dawson and his band were gathered around a campfire outside of St. Joe. The two men lying flat on the ridge above them could hear only the
Dan Kincaid
faint murmur of their voices.
Tonto
We don't dare get any closer.
Slade
Toto.
Tonto (alternate lines)
There's not another bit of COVID That man Slade.
Tonto
Yes, he answers Kincaid's description of him. The other tall man is Dawson. He was the leader of those cowpunchers.
Tonto (alternate lines)
How do you know that?
Tonto
You forget. I put all in disguise this morning and went down to the Steamboat Pier. Slade and Dawson were there. The whole band. They're planning some thing Tto we too
Tonto (alternate lines)
far away to hear what they were saying?
Tonto
Yes, but we can watch.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Look there. Dawson go for horse, right?
Slade
I'll be back in three or four days and we'll be all ready.
Tonto
Him head south and they're going after him. Tado hurry up. Back to the horses.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Dawson him riding steady?
Tonto
Yes. He's got his horse at a canter. That means he's going a long way.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That's what we do.
Tonto
Straight up, Toto.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Huh?
Tonto
Straight up, steady.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That's why we stop. We not follow Dawson.
Tonto
I'll keep track of Dawson myself. Tutto. Someone must stay here near St. Joe to keep an eye on the rest of them.
Narrator
Ah, that's right.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Slayton gang.
Dawson
Yeah.
Tonto
You'll also have to report to Ms. Barclay. And if Kincaid needs.
Tonto (alternate lines)
I'm Tundra savvy. You want me stay, huh?
Tonto
Yes. I look for Ms. Barkley along the river tonight. Tell her where I'm heading and why. They'll move our camp, Tono. When I return, I'll meet you there.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Ah, Tonto, do it for Kimosabe.
Tonto
Yes.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Where Dawson go?
Tonto
I think I have a good idea, Tado. But. Well, the way to make sure is to stay with him. Now don't forget Ms. Barkley.
Ms. Barkley
And that's where the Lone Ranger is gone, Tano.
Narrator
That's right.
Ms. Barkley
He didn't tell you what he suspects?
Lone Ranger
No.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Him. Say, wait till later.
Ms. Barkley
Suppose Dawson mixes up his trail and loses a Lone Ranger?
Tonto (alternate lines)
Lone Ranger got eye like eagle. Him follow Dawson anywhere.
Ms. Barkley
I'm worried, Tano. That gang is up to something. And they've got money behind them. Unlimited money. They're gunfighters too.
Tonto
That's right.
Ms. Barkley
But if the Lone Ranger says. Oh well, I've got to see Dan Kincaid in the morning. I hope he's hiring plenty of men. We'll need them.
Dan Kincaid
Yes, Ms. Barkley. The hiring coming along right fine. Got more than 100 signed up already. Soon as we get 200, off they go to Omaha.
Ms. Barkley
You've had no more trouble?
Dan Kincaid
No, ma'. Am. That sleigh gent looks like he's licked. Only.
Ms. Barkley
Yes.
Dan Kincaid
Well, I better tell you something. Do you see this?
Lone Ranger
What?
Ms. Barkley
It's a silver bullet.
Dan Kincaid
Yes. A Lone Ranger's bullet.
Ms. Barkley
A Lone Ranger?
Tonto
Yep.
Dan Kincaid
I saw him a couple of nights ago. He said he'd be around just in case.
Ms. Barkley
In case there was trouble?
Dan Kincaid
Uh huh. There hasn't been any trouble. But the Lone Ranger's gone and I've got no idea where to. Well, it puzzles me a.
Lone Ranger
Hi. Hello. Hi.
Tonto (alternate lines)
How to know? The way Silver sounds. Me hear you from far off. You lose, Dawson?
Tonto
Dawson's on his way back. He's bringing saddlebags full of gold. I saw him when he got it.
Tonto (alternate lines)
What that mean?
Tonto
Hello. I wore a disguise into town one morning, remember?
Tonto (alternate lines)
That's right.
Tonto
On the Wharf. I let a remark drop. I hope Dawson and Slade would hear me now. I'm sure they did.
Tonto (alternate lines)
And what you say?
Tonto
I mentioned how easily news of a gold strike would stampede all those men from hiring out to the railroad.
Tonto (alternate lines)
You say that, but Kimasabe that give bad men good idea.
Tonto
I meant to do just that.
Tonto (alternate lines)
But you.
Tonto
I wanted to know their plans ahead of time, Toto. What better way could there be than to give them a plan myself?
Tonto (alternate lines)
Tanto savvy that. But what you do now? Get ready for them, huh?
Tonto
How close is Kincaid to having his 200 men for the railroad?
Tonto (alternate lines)
Him get last 10 men tonight won't leave in morning.
Tonto
What? Tomorrow morning? Huh? Kincaid's a good agent, but I didn't think we could work that fast. That means we'll have to work fast too, because Slade and Dawson will be making the final plans tonight.
Narrator
That's right.
Tonto
Head for town, Tahlo. Find Ms. Barkley or Kincaid.
Slade
Where'd you go?
Tonto
I'll meet you there later. I have a little job of my own to attend to. Get your horse and ride at once. Tell them that they must be careful tomorrow morning.
Dan Kincaid
Tomorrow morning? What do you mean, Tonto? That's when the men leave for Omaha.
Tonto (alternate lines)
And that's what masked men say.
Ms. Barkley
What's this all about, Dan? Is this in your.
Dan Kincaid
He's a Lone Ranger's partner, Ms. Barclay. I put my trust in him.
Ms. Barkley
Well, so do I. Then go on.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Masked man say you get sheriff. Get 15, 20 men for deputy. Tell sheriff him have men in war before boat sail. Tell him to watch for men with mark of spur on them.
Lone Ranger
Mark of a spur, huh?
Dan Kincaid
The sleazy only army who's got a scar that looks like a spur.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Well, this mark may be not scar. You tell him.
Dan Kincaid
All right, engine, if you say so, I'll do it. Tell the Lone Ranger I'll attend to everything.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Get him out. Get him up. Sc. Well, fellow, can't it help Kincaid and woman? What you say, Ms. Barkley?
Tonto
Was she with Kincaid?
Tonto (alternate lines)
Now you not worry. She pretends she not know me good.
Tonto
It wouldn't do if she let it be known that she's working for the government with us.
Tonto (alternate lines)
And you take care where you go.
Tonto
Yes. Look. Tado.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Huh? Sorry.
Dawson
That's
Slade
Tonto.
Tonto (alternate lines)
Think it's gold. That fool's gold?
Tonto
Yes, Tonto. We're going over to where those outlaws are camped. We're taking this fool's gold. And we're also taking these.
Slade
Oh, them Brandon irons.
Tonto
That's right. Branding irons with a brand of A spur on them. We're going to burn this brand into every man's holster or glove or boot. Wherever we can.
Tonto (alternate lines)
But outlaw ban sleep now.
Dan Kincaid
All the better.
Tonto
We won't disturb them. Here, Donovan, these are Dawson's saddlebags. Spread that blanket. Pour these gold nuggets out on it. Good. I'll put the fool's gold in its place.
Tonto (alternate lines)
All done. Now we put gold in our saddlebag.
Tonto
Yes. Careful. Don't want to make too much noise.
Tonto (alternate lines)
That all there is.
Tonto
Good. Put Dawson saddlebags back.
Tonto (alternate lines)
We get Brand in the hands now.
Tonto
We put them in the fire as soon as we came. Totto. He'll be hot enough to leave a good strong brand. Now follow me. Careful, Toto. Stop. I don't. All right. Go back to sleep again.
Lone Ranger
Come on.
Slade
All right, you hombres, get your boots on and hitch up your guns. You old savvy what we do? We're right down near the wharf. You gents will get off your horses, mingle with the crowd. Sort of natural like.
Dawson
And when you come riding up on your horse.
Slade
Yeah, I'll come riding up my horse shouting for all I'm worth shouting at. Gold's been discovered 200 miles south of St. Joe. And I'll yank up with my saddlebags and show them those gold nuggets.
Dawson
Dawson, when you do that, we'll start yelling ourselves.
Lone Ranger
We'll yell, never mind the railroad. I'm going looking for gold.
Slade
And the gold rush will be on.
Lone Ranger
And inside of five minutes, Kincaid will be left with an empty riverboat and an empty wharf. His 200 men will be bitten with gold fever.
Slade
You know, that's it. Now get ready to ride, you umbrella. Sun's coming up.
Dawson
Dawson, what's that mark on your holster?
Tonto
Looks like it's been burnt with a Brandon iron.
Slade
Well, I'll be so it is.
Lone Ranger
And Jensen's boot. Look at it.
Slade
Hey, what kind of a joke is this, Slade? This here brain looks like a spur. Just like that scar you got in your face. Have you been playing games, Dawson?
Dawson
I had nothing to do with it.
Slade
Then who did? Nothing to me. It's anything, Dawson.
Dawson
There's a steamboat whistle.
Lone Ranger
The men will be flocking the river. We ain't got time to lose. Yeah.
Slade
Never mind those brands.
Lone Ranger
Never mind nothing. Get your horses. You gotta be there.
Ms. Barkley
Is everything arranged then?
Dawson
Yes, Miss Barkley. Isn't that right, Sheriff?
Lone Ranger
Yeah.
Dan Kincaid
I don't say what's on your mind, but my men are on the wharf. We noticed at least a dozen gents
Lone Ranger
with spurs on their gloves and holsters. Already.
Dawson
We're watching them.
Dan Kincaid
Good. I still wish the Lone Ranger was around, though.
Lone Ranger
So do I.
Ms. Barkley
But he isn't.
Lone Ranger
What are we waiting for?
Ms. Barkley
I guess you better start talking.
Dan Kincaid
Yeah, reckon so.
Lone Ranger
All right, listen. Listen, everybody. Quiet down. There's all you men who are going aboard the River Queen to work for the railroad. And there's a lot of others come down to see us go. Yeah, we want to see what 200 crazy men look like. Never mind Slade, gents. He just don't like the idea of anybody working. Now, you men who are going line up here next to the gangplank. We've got your names and we'll check them off. We don't want to make any mistakes.
Dan Kincaid
Under.
Slade
What's that?
Lone Ranger
Armory. Yellow gold. He's yelling. Gold. 200 miles, South Carolina.
Slade
I just come from there, Gents. The Delray. Quick. Nuggets as big as your fist.
Lone Ranger
Hey, I heard there might be gold at the Delray.
Slade
Stranger, you heard right. I got saddlebags full of it myself. You can pick it up with your bare hands. Here, look at my saddlebags. Look at them.
Lone Ranger
Look at them sparkle. Gold. That's gold. You better get there fast, chimps.
Slade
The claims will be all gone.
Lone Ranger
Wait. It's a trick.
Ms. Barkley
There's no gold at Delroy.
Lone Ranger
I believe my eyes, ma'. Am. Go ahead. Go to your railroad. Jobs me for the gold rush. There's no holding. Oh, Dan, what are we going to do but in blazers? Look who's coming now. Come on, Silver. It's the Lone Ranger. Listen to me.
Tonto
Listen, everyone.
Slade
This man's not telling the truth. You don't touch your guns or I'll
Tonto
blast them out of your hand.
Lone Ranger
Better do like he says. He's the best shot in the West.
Tonto
Sheriff, you come here and take a
Slade
closer look at Dawson saddlebags.
Lone Ranger
I'd be glad to, Mr. Sure.
Slade
Go ahead. It's gold.
Lone Ranger
Gold is fool's gold. That's what it is. Fool's gold. It ain't worth a red cent. Fool's gold.
Slade
I've been tricked.
Lone Ranger
No, we're the ones who are almost tricked. How about it, you men? Are you working for the railroad? Yeah.
Slade
Clay Jensen, Harrison, but Jake's up.
Lone Ranger
Pull out your guns and start shoot
Slade
men with the spurs.
Lone Ranger
Get them. He gets clean.
Narrator
As the bad men scattered through the crowd tried to obey Dawson's order and use their guns. The sheriff's deputies were right behind them. The struggle was sharp and brief. In a few moments, the bad men were disarmed and the Lone Ranger himself had Dawson with his hands raised in the air.
Tonto
Here's the ringleader, Sheriff.
Lone Ranger
Thanks, mister. These humberies will go behind bars.
Narrator
Half an hour later, as the railroad railroad workers were piling aboard the River Queen.
Ms. Barkley
You've done us a great service once more.
Tonto
Colin and I did our best, Ms. Barkley. Here's a Golden Dawson saddlebag. You can give it to colonel Parkman. He'll know what to do with it.
Ms. Barkley
I will.
Tonto
When you need this, call on us again.
Lone Ranger
I will.
Ms. Barkley
Goodbye and thank you.
Tonto
Not goodbye, but adios.
Lone Ranger
Come on, silver helmets. Come. Ms. Barkley. Ms. Barkley.
Dan Kincaid
Are they leaving?
Ms. Barkley
Yes, Dan.
Lone Ranger
Look at them ride.
Dan Kincaid
They sure say the railroad a heap of trouble. We're all ready to head up river in the Paddleston. Ms. Barkley, you coming along?
Ms. Barkley
Yes. Yes, Dan, I'm coming.

Even if you haven’t heard this classic episode before, the story offers an accessible and compelling window into the anxieties and heroics of the West. The Lone Ranger and Tonto’s blend of detective work and daring is as relevant as ever, and the episode’s tension-filled showdown is both clever and satisfying.
