Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, the masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. The stories of his strength and courage, his daring and resourcefulness have come down to us through the generations. And nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again.
Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. There's danger on the trail ahead. I O Silver.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
Lone Ranger in Tonto, riding along a ridge, heard the distant crack of a heavy caliber rifle.
Lone Ranger
Right up tunnel
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
you Hear it?
Tonto
Yes. A rifle and a heavy one. Somewhere in the valley down there.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Maybe near edge of your river.
Tonto
Another. There's no hunting around here. A rifle means one of two things. Someone is signaling for help. Or someone is getting shot at.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Ah, wait. We watch valley.
Tonto
Third shot will mean they need help.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We not here. Third shot.
Tonto
Wouldn't be hard for a man to get lost in this country.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Oh, this is not far from town.
Tonto
I know Tado. There are a lot of newcomers in town. Population of Goose Creek has tripled in the last few weeks. And the easterners are likely to get lost if they travel 10 miles out of town.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
You wait.
Tonto
What is it, Kimosabe?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We hear other sounds. Sound of axe on wood.
Tonto
Yes.
Lambert
T. Wait.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Maybe we get location. The sound two rifle shots followed by
Tonto
an axe on wood. What would that mean?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
I may not know yet. Maybe we.
Tonto
What do you see? Tallow.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We ride downhill right to edge of water. See what?
Tonto
There.
Lone Ranger
Get him up. Scorn silver.
Tonto
You see those chips of wood floating on the water from the ridge up there?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
He sees something floating. Me go get him. Get him up.
Lone Ranger
Scout. Me got you for one.
Tonto
Get him up the scout. We don't hear the ax now.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Totto not right.
Lambert
But you take a look.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
This chip come from plenty big tree,
Tonto
Heavy wood tree somewhere upstream.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
If we go that way, we find hoochop tree and find my rifle get fired.
Tonto
We're heading toward town anyway. We might as well investigate.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
She chips a wooden stream after rifle shot.
Tonto
Otto, the man who chopped this wood knew how to handle an ax.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That's right.
Tonto
His axe was mighty sharp. Dull axe won't take this much out of a hardwood tree. Let's get upstream. Come on.
Lone Ranger
Come up.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
While the lone ranger and Tonto rode upstream heading toward Goose Creek, the sheriff sat in his office with a deputy and a woman from the east.
Sheriff
I'll tell you, Mrs. Porter, if your husband had been in Goose Creek for anything like a year, I'd have known about it. So would Jim Tucker. Wouldn't you, Jim?
Deputy Jim
He sure would. Up to a few weeks ago he knew every man, woman, child and dog in a 40 mile radius.
Mrs. Porter
I came all the way from the east. I was sure I could find out something about him. Mr. Lambert thought so too.
Sheriff
Lambert? I reckon he must be a newcomer too, eh?
Mrs. Porter
Yes. He came here a few days before I did. He thought he'd traced my husband to Goose Creek.
Tonto
Oh, gone at all.
Sheriff
Mrs. Porter, I'm sure sorry you had this trip for nothing. If you was a man, you might be able to stake A claim like the others are doing. Dig for gold.
Deputy Jim
I expect you're sort of stranded here now, huh?
Mrs. Porter
Well, not exactly, Mrs. Porter.
Sheriff
You're not the type of woman to be happy in a place of this sort. I can see that. If you want to go back to the East, I can fix it with a stage company. We'll take up a collection for expense money.
Mrs. Porter
Thank you, Sheriff. You're very kind.
Sheriff
We'll tend to it right away, Jim. You see.
Mrs. Porter
Oh, Sheriff, I. I don't need money.
Sheriff
We'll let the boys know.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
What's that?
Mrs. Porter
I don't need money.
Sheriff
You don't? You mean you got enough money to get back?
Mrs. Porter
Oh, yes.
Sheriff
That's different. Most folks come here flat broke. If they don't need cash, they stay in the East.
Mrs. Porter
I didn't come here to strike it rich, you see, I came to find my husband.
Sheriff
Sure, I can see it now.
Deputy Jim
I'll fix up a reservation on the next stage.
Mrs. Porter
Mrs. Porter, no, please.
Deputy Jim
Don't you want to take care of it yourself then?
Mrs. Porter
I'm not sure that I'll return to the East. No, I think I'll stay here for a time in case there's some information about my husband.
Sheriff
His name was Henry, huh?
Mrs. Porter
Yes, Henry Porter.
Sheriff
Never been anyone by that name around here. I'm dead sure of it.
Mrs. Porter
He might have changed his name. Here's a picture of him. The tintype he had made in St. Louis.
Sheriff
Take a look, Jim.
Deputy Jim
I never saw anyone like this.
Sheriff
Sure is a prosperous looking gent in this picture.
Tonto
He was quite well to do and came west.
Mrs. Porter
Yes. Look at this, Sheriff. Have you ever seen this watch chain?
Sheriff
No, can't say as I have. Have you, Jim?
Deputy Jim
Let me see it.
Tonto
A heavy one.
Sheriff
Solid gold.
Mrs. Porter
It was my husband's. He wore it when he left home.
Sheriff
How'd you get it?
Mrs. Porter
You see here? It has his name on it. And the name of our home. Fair Gardens, Virginia. Someone must have found it and sent it to me there. It came from Goose Creek's post office. That's why Mr. Lambert and I came here.
Sheriff
Doggone strange. Oh, gone strange. How'd it get here?
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
Lone Ranger and Tunnel, riding upstream, came to the place where a large tree had been felled on the bank. A keen axe lay on the ground near the partially trimmed trees.
Tonto
Steady. Look around here, Toto. Someone left in a hurry.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That's right. Him leave axe here.
Tonto
Brand new accident. And here's a coil of rope.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Ah, me take look this way. You Want to key Ms. Hobby?
Lambert
Look here. What is it?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
I don't Hear him? Drowned him dead?
Tonto
Yes. Pretty certain he was shot. Let's see if he was hit once or twice.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We hear two shots.
Tonto
He must have been shot right here. There are his footprints on the bank. He was walking upstream that price. He was shot here. He had to be shot at close range. Trees come close to the bank and they're thick. One bullet struck him, Tyler. Just one.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
First bullet missing.
Tonto
I wonder who would.
Lone Ranger
Put your hands up and keep them there.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Where'd that.
Lone Ranger
There's this warning.
Tonto
All right, our hands are up. Come out where we can see you.
Lone Ranger
You think I'm loco?
Tonto
Well, what do you want?
Lone Ranger
Face the river and keep facing that way.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We make jumper, Feller.
Tonto
Not now, fellow. Edge.
Lone Ranger
It's just keep your faces that way if you don't want to get shot full of holes. You would wear the mask. I reckon you're an outlaw to start with. There'll be no one sorry to find you dead. Don't make a move or I'll let you have it.
Tonto
Try and remember that voice.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Tunnel. Tanto. Do it.
Tonto
I think he's moving away.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Let me hear him.
Tonto
How long are we to stand this way? He's gone, Tono.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Now we go at him.
Tonto
Get to the saddle. Steady, big fellow.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Are you ready?
Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. Get him up. Scout
Tonto
can't make any time in this woods.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
We follow trail and go this way.
Tonto
He had a horse in the woods. He's riding now.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Me, Hiram. He'll go that way.
Tonto
Man is a murderer. There's no doubt about that.
Sheriff
That right.
Tonto
Which way now? Can you see any tracks?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Me see him this way.
Tonto
Look. He must have. In the clearing over there. Beneath that pine. Another man sprawled on the ground.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Maybe that's Tunnel dead from other shot we hear.
Lone Ranger
Go on, Silver.
Tonto
This man's alive.
Lambert
Tutto, help. Help me study there.
Tonto
You're all right.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
I'm not hit with bullet.
Lambert
Don't hit me again.
Tonto
I won't tell anyone this man's an Easterner. Tano. Look at the clothes he's wearing.
Lambert
Who hit you, man? Old man. Had a heavy beard.
Tonto
Here, take a drink of water. You're not badly hurt.
Lambert
Thanks. Stranger Mask.
Tonto
We're here to help you. We were following the man who knocked you down.
Lambert
I don't know who he was.
Tonto
Let me have some more water. Sure.
Lambert
Here. That's good. Thank you.
Tonto
Now tell us what the man looked like.
Lambert
What did he do?
Tonto
He shot a man over near the creek.
Lambert
Dead?
Tonto
Yes.
Lambert
I. I think he would have shot me too, if I'd resisted at all. I don't know how long I've been here.
Tonto
Who are you?
Lambert
My name is Lambert. I've only been here for a short time. I came from the east.
Tonto
Yes, I know.
Lambert
I've been staying in town. Goose Creek.
Tonto
But you.
Lambert
Who are you?
Tonto
For the time being, just call me friend. Sit up, but don't try to stand for a little while.
Lambert
Oh, my head feels as if it would burst.
Tonto
Did the man hit you in the head? I guess so. Now forget the fact that I wear a mask. Tell me what you know.
Lambert
I was coming through the woods. I left town to take a hike, to know how far I'd come. I guess I'd lost my way.
Sheriff
Yes.
Lambert
Well, this man was sitting here somewhere near this tree. I came up to him to ask the way back to Goose Creek. Then he came over close to me, looked at me. I felt that he was insane. There was a wild glint in his eyes.
Tonto
What did he do?
Lambert
Well, he asked me to look around in back of me. I did so. And that's all I remember.
Tonto
He must have been unconscious for a long time.
Lambert
I wouldn't know.
Tonto
I was a man dressed well.
Lambert
He wore a blue shirt, black trousers tucked into his boots, an old battered black hat, and he carried a short rifle. He had a thick black beard and a big mustache. But it was his eyes. They were wild staring. I'm sure the man was insane.
Tonto
What kind of a horse did he have?
Lambert
Well, it was black. That's about all I know about it.
Tonto
Tunnel. He can't be in three places at the same time.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Isn't that right?
Tonto
One of us will have to take this man back to Goose Creek. The other should examine the scene of the crime or follow the killer's trail.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Nice study. Scene of crime, huh? Maybe find sign there.
Tonto
All right. I'll take this man to town. I'll send the sheriff out. Leave things as they are until he gets there. Maybe he'll know who the dead man is.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Go now.
Deputy Jim
Get him up.
Tonto
This cow standing up?
Lambert
I'll try.
Tonto
Let me lean on you.
Lambert
Come on.
Tonto
Can you ride? A little. You ride with me. Come on, I'll help you to the saddle.
Lambert
Can your horse carry both of us?
Tonto
Yes. Up you go.
Lambert
Oh, my head splitting.
Tonto
Say, big fella there. Hello, sir.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
In Goose Creek, the Lone Ranger helped Lambert from the saddle. Then, mounting again, he headed to the office of the sheriff.
Lone Ranger
Father Silver.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Fool.
Mrs. Porter
Come on.
Lone Ranger
She had the critic wearing a mask.
Sheriff
Come to your six gun ready.
Tonto
Hold on, Sheriff. I'm here to take you to the scene of a murder.
Sheriff
Who'd you kill?
Lone Ranger
I got you covered.
Deputy Jim
Don't make a sudden move.
Tonto
This mask doesn't mean that I'm an outlaw. But you let a killer escape. If you don't come with me, I'll show you where the body is.
Deputy Jim
You better take this shooting iron serious, stranger.
Tonto
You won't shoot, deputy. Come on, Silver.
Lone Ranger
Hang it all, Sheriff.
Sheriff
Saddle up, Jim. We've got to go after that armory and find out what he's talking about.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
Knowing the lawman would follow, the masked rider trotted his horse downstream until he rejoined Toto. He was several minutes ahead of the sheriff and deputy.
Tonto
What have you found out? Tunnel?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Oh, me find plenty. Sign here where tree chop down. And here where feller fall dead. And here, rope. Yes. Killer planned to tie a dead man to trunk of tree, send him long way downstream.
Tonto
There are no settlements for long ways downstream.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That's right. Maybe feller never be found. Only Indian in downstream country.
Tonto
And the killer was afraid someone in Goose Creek would recognize the dead man and associate him with the man who shot him.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Maybe that right.
Tonto
The sheriff is on his way here.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That would.
Tonto
That easterner told me what the killer looked like, so he shouldn't be hard to find. Wonder who this poor fellow is.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Me find paint track on ground. Him walk here from downstream in Indian country?
Tonto
He did.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Will he follow his back trail? Maybe. Here. You look at boot red clay on boot red clay.
Tonto
That's a good lead.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Me know where red clay can be. Found it long way from here. Three day walk downstream.
Tonto
Three days of walking. But we'll ride it before night. That's the sheriff's deputy.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Can't we wait here?
Tonto
No, the sheriff didn't recognize me, and I don't want to lose time answering a lot of questions. If we don't follow the back trail before night, the dew might wipe it out. Steady, Scout, steady.
Lone Ranger
You hold on now. I want to talk with you. Come on. Get him up, Scout. Come on, Silver. Hey there. Re up. Stop him, Jeff. You stop there. Stop the killer. Sheriff, I saw the dead man back there. I want that masked man. He's the one I want. Keep riding after till we get him.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger story. Before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments.

Lone Ranger
Sam.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
Now to continue our story. Riding downstream, the Lone Ranger in Tonto raced ahead of the sheriff and his deputy.
Lone Ranger
Oh, Silver.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
The great horse. Silver had to be held back so Scout could stay alongside. But even so, the lawmen were soon out distanced.
Tonto
Easy, boy. Easy. Silver. I don't think the trail that man can be found again. When we get to the Red Clay banks, we'll keep going till we get there.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That good?
Lone Ranger
If the sheriff won't take the dead
Tonto
man back to Goose Creek, we will.
Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. Hit him up stout. Oh, Silver.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
Whoa, Scotty.
Lone Ranger
Who?
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Ancient Tom. Live on Red Clay Bank. There's shack yonder.
Tonto
Maybe he'll know something about the dead man. Tullo. We'll go and ask him.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Him lived like hermit plenty long time.
Tonto
Yes, I've heard about him. Come on. At least there's someone in the shack with a fire in the fireplace.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Isn't that right?
Tonto
Say a big fella. There's Indian Tom sitting in the doorway.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Ah, look. Him smoke pipe.
Tonto
Not an Indian pipe either.
Lambert
Welcome, strangers, to the home of the village.
Tonto
Hello. The way he's talking.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
How, Tom?
Lambert
Make yourselves at home. There's food, water and rest.
Tonto
Tom, we want to have a talk with you.
Narrator (Lone Ranger Story)
The Lone Ranger and Toto were amazed when the hermit Indian spoke in a cultured voice unlike anything the masked man had heard from the lips of a red man. Meanwhile, the sheriff and his deputy rode into town with their grim burden. Evening found them at the hotel talking to Mrs. Porter.
Sheriff
Sure was surprised. Mrs. Porter, when we got to the scene of the crime after chasing that masked man, we found out that he wasn't a crook at all.
Mrs. Porter
The masked man wasn't?
Tonto
Not by a jug full.
Sheriff
There was a silver bullet beside the body of the poor critter we picked up. A silver bullet? That means it was the Lone Ranger that was there.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Yeah.
Deputy Jim
We should have known who he was when we saw that white horse and heard it called Silver.
Sheriff
We should have. But I never thought the Lone Ranger would come to a place like this.
Deputy Jim
Anyhow, Mrs. Porter, the sheriff and I thought it was a good idea to bring the fellow here for a decent burial and to see if anyone know him.
Sheriff
He didn't look anything like the picture you showed us, Mrs. Porter.
Mrs. Porter
Oh, I. I'm sure it couldn't have been my husband, but Mr. Lambert will find out.
Sheriff
He should be getting back by this time, able to hop, skip and jump to the corner's office.
Mrs. Porter
It was fine of Mr. Lambert to offer to go when he'd been through such a harrowing experience today. His head was aching frightfully. He must have suffered a terrible blow.
Lone Ranger
Sheriff, Come with me.
Messenger
Hurry.
Sheriff
Oh, what's the matter?
Lambert
Mrs. Porter, you've got to get away from Goose Creek. This place isn't fit for you.
Tonto
The things that happen here.
Mrs. Porter
Mr. Lambert. What has happened?
Sheriff
What's the matter with you?
Lambert
Lambert, the man I went to see, to try to identify, to make sure
Tonto
he was not Mr. Porter.
Lambert
He's gone.
Sheriff
Gone Where?
Lambert
I don't know.
Deputy Jim
He sure couldn't have walked away.
Lambert
The rear of the coroner's place had been broken into. The body was missing. No signs of anyone around there.
Sheriff
Juniper. Jim, I sure wish that Lone Ranger was here.
Tonto
Now.
Sheriff
This thing is getting beyond me.
Tonto
What did you say?
Sheriff
The Lone Ranger. I reckon you never heard of him, Mr. Lambert. Oh, wait, wait.
Tonto
I'll go with you, Mrs. Porter.
Lambert
I'll rejoin you soon.
Mrs. Porter
Yes, Mr. Lambert.
Tonto
Who is the Lone Ranger?
Sheriff
Well, he's the one that brought you to Char Lambert on that white horse of his.
Deputy Jim
Oh, Corner's place is right down here, a couple of doors. Are you sure you got to the right place, Lambert?
Lambert
Of course I did.
Sheriff
Maybe the Lone Ranger will be coming back. If he does, I'll bet you he'll get to the truth of things. If the stories I've heard him are right.
Deputy Jim
There's the Coronation.
Lambert
Front door is still unlocked, Sheriff. I didn't lock it because I knew
Tonto
it'd be coming right back.
Lambert
Here's the key you loaned me. Thanks.
Deputy Jim
Did you leave the lamp going?
Lambert
Yes.
Deputy Jim
Everything just as you left it here?
Tonto
Yes.
Sheriff
Seems to be not much we can do tonight. We'll hunt for tracks around the rear of the place. When morning comes.
Tonto
You think this. This Lone Ranger will be here?
Sheriff
Maybe he's in town right now. Sometimes he wears a disguise. So they say.
Deputy Jim
You can bet your neck he'll be here if there's unfinished business, won't he, sheriff?
Sheriff
I reckon he will be. He's not here now. He'll be heading this way.
Tonto
Made good time, Kahlo. All the way back here before midnight.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That plenty past Ryan Poor. There's Silver.
Messenger
Hi there, mister. Is that a horse named Silver?
Tonto
Yes. Hi.
Messenger
And you're the gent. No question about it. Got a message for you. I was told to watch for you.
Tonto
Who gave it to you?
Messenger
I don't know him. There was something before.
Tonto
Well, what's the message?
Messenger
Are you looking for a man with a black beard?
Tonto
What do you know about him?
Messenger
I know where he can be located.
Tonto
Where?
Messenger
Camped alongside a campfire that's likely burned low by this time. South of town. With a quick run through the gorge. It's at the bottom of the gorge. Camp, like I said.
Tonto
Thanks.
Messenger
You ride to the bridge. You see the fire? There's anything left of it.
Tonto
We're not through yet, Silver. More riding, Big fella. Come on.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Give him up.
Lone Ranger
Here's the bridge, Tuttle.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
They'll light a small fire.
Tonto
There's a camp of some sort down there.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Kimosabe not sea feller. Maybe him sleep in blanket.
Tonto
Say he big fella. Down into the gorge.
Lambert
We need Silver and scout here.
Tonto
Yes, Tutto.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Pretty dark here.
Tonto
Yes. Hey there, Silver. Go ahead. Tano, bring up the rear.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
You want step? Trying to gorge. Plenty rocky.
Tonto
It's a wonder we haven't wakened. The killer. Man below is still asleep. You see him rolling these blankets there? I'm gonna have a look at him. Otto. Something's the matter up at the rim. Silver's trying to warn us. Get that man the blankets and go up. You're covered, mister. Don't make a move.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
He get him here.
Lambert
Fellow, what's with Good wait.
Mrs. Porter
Him dead?
Tonto
Yes,
Lone Ranger
up there.
Tonto
That fella firing on us? Can't shoot at him. He's right in front of Silver. Here. Back of this rock. He knows we can't fire on him. Toto. We'd hit Silver.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
That right.
Lone Ranger
Survive. Your hands higher.
Tonto
Don't answer. No.
Sheriff
Keep back.
Tonto
At the rock. Totto, I'm going to take another look at the dead man.
Lambert
Me kiss look.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
You stay here.
Tonto
No, keep watching the man above. He's firing as fast as he can load that bullet.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Hit rock.
Tonto
I'll creep over just a few yards. Fire a shot over the head of the horses to keep his attention.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
Tanto, do it.
Sheriff
Hello.
Tonto
Just as I thought.
Sheriff
What?
Deputy Jim
That.
Tonto
That man on the rim is the one who held a gun once before
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
him got same voice.
Tonto
He's a poor shot. I'm going up there to get him now.
Lambert
Nico, I examined the dead man.
Tonto
I know the answer now. Stay here and keep that fellow busy. I'll go after him.
Lone Ranger
Get you now I see you climbing up here. You can't shoot straight enough to get me.
Tonto
I'm coming after you.
Lone Ranger
Throw down your gun and get your hands up. Closer to you. Fire away. You can't hit anything. It took two shots to kill the man you ambushed. You think my horse will keep me from firing? Your wrong. I'll show you. Silver. Hoy. I can have a clear shot. That ends your rifle shooting for good. Come on Tado. He's on the run. You'll get me. You will get me. Here Silver boy. That's it boy. After him. Now. Stop running or I'll rope you. All right then I'll have to use the rope there. Go Silver. Pull back. Back big fellow, back. We'll head for town and have the show.
Mrs. Porter
Sheriff, I can't imagine what the masked man had to tell. But your deputy said it would be a great surprise to me.
Sheriff
Yeah, Mrs. Porter, I sure reckon it will be.
Mrs. Porter
Where's the Lone Ranger now?
Sheriff
He's out back of the office with Jim. That's my deputy, you know.
Mrs. Porter
Oh yes.
Sheriff
He'll be right in. I think this is the gent now.
Tonto
I'll be through in a few minutes. Tyllow, have the horses ready. Uh huh.
Tonto (Alternate or additional lines)
I'm ready now.
Tonto
Mrs. Porter, I think we know the story now. You came here because you received a watch chain that belonged to your husband.
Mrs. Porter
That's right.
Sheriff
We never saw her husband around here.
Tonto
He lived near here though. He lived with Indian Tom.
Sheriff
The Indian hermit.
Tonto
Yes. You see, he found peace and happiness in that life. He taught Indian Tom English and grammar, Latin and mathematics, a lot of other things. In appearance he changed a lot.
Mrs. Porter
Yes.
Tonto
In the meantime he knew he had left you with plenty of money which was being watched for you by Mr. Lambert. Isn't that the case?
Mrs. Porter
Yes. Mr. Lambert had charge of my money.
Tonto
The years went on and your husband wanted to see you again. He sent a letter in the watch chain. But you never saw the letter.
Mrs. Porter
No, I saw.
Tonto
No letter was mailed. Mailed with the watch chain. But he didn't hear from you. He thought you didn't want to see him again. Then he heard that you'd come here and he sent you a note. Indian Tom brought the note to your lawyer, Mr. Lambert.
Mrs. Porter
I didn't see that note.
Tonto
No, Because Lambert didn't show it to you. Lambert disguised himself and went out to meet and kill your husband.
Mrs. Porter
No.
Tonto
He was a splendid hand with an axe, but a poor shot with a rifle to conceal the death. He was going to send your husband's body downstream on a log. And he heard me coming. He took off the disguise and let me find him, making me think he'd been attacked by the man he described.
Sheriff
Jumping juniper. It all fits like a glove.
Mrs. Porter
I can't believe this, said Mr. Lambert. Why should he do such a thing?
Tonto
He didn't want you to identify your husband, so I moved him away from here. He got word to me, sending me to the gorge. He put a disguise on your husband, planning to kill me and kill Toto. Then tell you, Sheriff, that we had been shot in a fight with a dead man. You were to think we had killed him. The description would tally with the one given by Lambert. You'd think you had caught the man who was the killer instead of the man who was killed.
Sheriff
How'd you know all this?
Tonto
Part of its theory. I don't think you'll find a better explanation. Bring Lambert in here.
Sheriff
Bring him in.
Tonto
Jim.
Deputy Jim
Come in. Get in there, you coyote. Mr. Lambert.
Tonto
How about it, Lambert? You care to confess?
Lambert
What's her to lose? Might as well admit it was you
Tonto
who tried to talk like a Western outlaw when you stood behind me at the edge of Goose Creek. Yes. And you stole the letters Porter sent to his wife. I admit it.
Mrs. Porter
Now I understand. I came into the hall of my home as you held that watch chain in your hand. You had to show it to me.
Lambert
You.
Mrs. Porter
You'd already hidden the letter that came with us?
Tonto
Yes. Why, Lambert? Gambling.
Lambert
I'd misused the money. I couldn't have accounted for it. I knew that Porter came back. He'd want an accounting. I thought, well, I hope that I could marry Mrs. Porter if her husband never returned. And then I wouldn't have to account.
Sheriff
Lonely, ornery polecat. You'll hang for this.
Tonto
Oh, no.
Lone Ranger
I will. Hey, Stop it. Hold on.
Tonto
Please stop it.
Sheriff
Good work, redskin.
Deputy Jim
Not run.
Tonto
Now I'll get him roped before he comes conscious. Well, that's all there is for us to do, Sheriff.
Mrs. Porter
Oh, but wait. Let me show my appreciation.
Tonto
Thank you, Mrs. Porter. You can do that by helping people here. Adios.
Mrs. Porter
But wait, Sheriff. He's gone.
Sheriff
He wouldn't take. Thanks, ma'. Am.
Mrs. Porter
What did he mean, helping people here?
Sheriff
Well, I reckon we need ladies of your sort here mighty bad. But this isn't the place for you.
Mrs. Porter
I do want to stay here.
Lone Ranger
Here?
Mrs. Porter
Where poor Henry had lived in the country he loved.
Sheriff
Mrs. Porter, maybe we got some bad hombres, all right, but nothing as sneaking and scheming as that coyote on the floor.
Mrs. Porter
You may have some. Some bad hombres, Sheriff, but you. You also have some very fine ones I owe.
Lone Ranger
