Narrator
N A B I S C O Nabisco is the name to know For a breakfast you can't beat, eat Nabisco Shredded Wheat. Keen eyes fixed on a flying target. A gleaming arrow set against a rawhide string. A strike strong bow bent almost to the breaking point. And then. Great Arrow Nabisco Shredded Wheat presents Straight Arrow. A new thrilling adventure story from the exciting days of the Old West. To friends and neighbors alike, Steve Adams appeared to be nothing more than the young owner of the Broken Bow. Cattle spread. But when danger threatened innocent people and when evildoers plotted against justice, then Steve Adams, rancher disappeared. And in his place came a mysterious, stalwart Indian wearing the dress and war paint of a Comanche riding the great golden Palomino fury. Galloping out of the darkness to take up the cause of law and order throughout the west comes the legendary figure of Straight Arrow. When Steve and Paki returned to the Broken Bow spread after driving a herd of beef to the northwest and Rocky Mountain Railroad construction camp, they expected to find Mesquite Molly busy in the kitchen. But the ranch house was dark, the wood burning stove was cold, and the only explanation was a note propped up against the kerosene lamp by cactus.
Paki
Steve, she's gone. And just when I was looking forward to a nice mess of vittles for supper.
Straight Arrow
According to this note, she went out to help a lumberman named Pierre Anton.
Paki
Anton? Don't that name sound familiar? Ain't he got something to do with the railroad?
Straight Arrow
He works for him. Railroad needs plenty of timber for railroad ties. And rather than bring them all the way in from the east, the railroad has set up lumbering operations in the north.
Paki
Wood Kino. That's it. Just where is this place, Steve?
Straight Arrow
Now let's see if it says Pierre Anton's having trouble, Cook left and he needs another one. Lumber camp is located in Gunsite Notch. Gunsite Notch?
Paki
Something wrong?
Straight Arrow
Plenty. Packing this afternoon. Coming across the prairie, we spotted smoke signals in the distance.
Paki
A Kino Nez Perce signal.
Straight Arrow
That's right. And you know as well as I do what the Nez Perce are up to.
Paki
You bet your boots they're in cahoots with Rope or Lynch to bust up that railroad.
Straight Arrow
Yeah, Packy and those signals we saw this afternoon were coming from the direction Of Gunsite Notch, See?
Paki
Come to think of it, that's a bad place to be corelled in, ain't it?
Straight Arrow
It's not good. There's plenty of timber. But it's inside a hollow basin with steep cliffs all around. The only way in or out is through Gunsite Notch. Becky, it may take us all night, but we're heading for that lumber camp pronto.
Pierre Anton
Sacre bleu. What has got into these lumberjacks? Do they not have the brains of a flea?
Steve Adams
What's the matter, Mr. Anton? You look mad enough to chew nails. Was nothing wrong that breakfast I dished out for your crew?
Pierre Anton
This is fulls of lumberjacks. Ah, now comes Bleak. Perhaps he can explain.
Narrator
I.
Steve Adams
Bleak.
Bleak
Mr. Anton. What's wrong, boy? Said you was looking for me.
Pierre Anton
Hey, I look for you, Blake. Here. What does this mean?
Bleak
What does what mean?
Pierre Anton
The logs. The way you file up the logs, you're not blind.
Bleak
I don't savvy. Ain't that where you want them stacked up?
Straight Arrow
No.
Bleak
But you said before you left.
Pierre Anton
Before I left, I give exact orders. The logs that are cut down must be stacked up in piles where the ground she is flat.
Bleak
Put him close to the trail so it'd be easier to load them into the wagon.
Pierre Anton
Close to the trail, you fool. Can you not see piles of logs, heavy logs piled 20ft high. Now, suppose for one little moment something goes wrong, huh?
Bleak
I don't understand, Anton.
Steve Adams
I reckon I do. All that's holding them stacks up is a couple of stakes driven into the ground. If the stakes should get busted, them logs would start rolling the hull. Kitten Cabood hit the downgrade and smash right on through Gunsight Notch like a stampedin herd.
Pierre Anton
Yeah, and perhaps smash to bits. Now, you see, Bleak, even a woman can tell what is wrong.
Bleak
She better stick to her skillet.
Steve Adams
Now, looky here, mister.
Bleak
You button your lip, Anton. If you don't like the way I do things, hire yourself another man.
Pierre Anton
Oh, no, no. Wait one moment. You cannot quit.
Bleak
Why can't I?
Pierre Anton
But already I'm shorthanded. I have but 20 men. No, no, no, Bleak. Look, only the next time, be more careful, you understand? Be careful. And try not to do Agent.
Bleak
Who's that? Somebody coming up the trail.
Steve Adams
Say, that looks like. Well, Lander Goshen. It is Steve Adams and Paki.
Narrator
Howdy.
Straight Arrow
Howdy, Mesquite.
Steve Adams
What are you doing here?
Paki
Didn't you get my message, Dino? You bet we did, Mesquite. And there's trouble right behind us.
Pierre Anton
Trouble, monsieur? What do you mean?
Straight Arrow
You're Pierre Anton. Anton Pacquia and I made it through Gunsight Notch. But as we came through, we spotted Indians.
Pierre Anton
Indians?
Straight Arrow
Nez Perce. A whole raiding party of them. At least a hundred bleu. You're in a tight spot here. If I were in your shoes, I'd get ready for shooting.
Pierre Anton
Very, mon vieux. Les n'est per se. There are plenty bad, huh? I will give orders at once. Hey, Bleak. You go at once to the Mon Dieu. What has happened to Bleak?
Steve Adams
Well, he was here a second ago.
Pierre Anton
But now he is gone. Damn pest. You see, that is what happened all the time. I tell you, Ms. Amy, it is very difficult to run a lumber camp when no one attends. Very difficult.
Bleak
Spade. Spade. Blaster. Hide. Where are you?
Spade
Right here, where you told me to Stand by. Blake. What's eating you?
Pierre Anton
Plenty.
Bleak
Anton's wise. What?
Spade
He knows you and me work for Robert Lynch.
Bleak
No, no, not that, you loco idiot. But a couple hombres just high tailed in through the notch. You got a look at Chief Buffalo hiding his warriors.
Spade
That's not so good.
Bleak
You bet it ain't. He had orders to attack his camp by surprise.
Spade
Anton's getting set for him.
Bleak
Yep. He's got guns and ammunition. Enough to hold off an army. That ain't all, Spade. One of them two hombres who showed up is wearing a risk kit.
Spade
What? You don't mean.
Bleak
You bet I do. A gentle name, Packy. One of them shiny bronze wrist kits with engine head on top.
Spade
Lynch passed a word about them. He said whoever wears them is tied in with straight arrow.
Bleak
That's right, Spade. I don't like it one bit.
Paki
Yeah.
Spade
If Buffalo Hide brings his braves in through the notch now, he'll run into a hail of that. What are we going to do?
Bleak
Blank you hightail out of here. Savvy? Tell Buffalo Hide to hold up.
Spade
You got a scheme?
Straight Arrow
Yep.
Bleak
Spade. All the ammunition is stored in a shed right behind Anton's cabin. Tonight, come dark, he'll have everybody in that cabin. Lumberjacks, them two strangers and that that female. Then I'm setting the shed on fire. It'll go up in smoke. And so will every last bu.
Narrator
Boys and girls, here's a foolproof way to start the day right. Sit yourself in front of a big bowl full of delicious Nabisco Shredded Wheat, milk and sugar topped with sliced bananas. Man, that's a dish. Those toasty brown Nabisco Shredded Wheat biscuits are truly delicious with the power and energy you boys and girls all need. You see, Nabisco shredded wheat is made from pure, nutritious western wheat. That's why it's the breakfast standby that stands by you. Tell Mother to get you a big package of the original shredded wheat tomorrow. That's Nabisco shredded wheat in the Niagara Falls package. And now some really big news. Later on, we're going to tell you how you can get a straight arrow Mystic Wrist kit for your very own. Get pencil and paper now. During the day, preparations were made to stand off the threatening approach of the Nez Perce Indians against the lumber camp above Gunsite Notch. As night fell, the entire crew gathered in Pierre Anton's log cabin.
Pierre Anton
There is no need for concern, mes ami. We are in good position for the.
Steve Adams
There's no sign of him yet, is there?
Paki
Stand to one side, Mesquite. I'm watching out through this here gun port.
Straight Arrow
Anton, have you located Bleak yet?
Pierre Anton
Bleak? He's not here, monsieur.
Straight Arrow
Not in this cabin.
Pierre Anton
Bello, it does not matter. He's a coward. He run away. That is all.
Straight Arrow
Ran where, Anton?
Pierre Anton
What do you mean, mon ami?
Straight Arrow
There's only one way to run through Gunsite Notch.
Paki
Pinot. That's a fact.
Pierre Anton
But he would not go there. He would fall into the hands of the ne.
Straight Arrow
I don't like the way he disappeared when Packy and I showed up.
Paki
You gonna hunch he's up to something, Steve?
Pierre Anton
He might be, but what could he do? Even if the Neper say they tried to come against us through Gunsight Notch, even so, we can hold them off. We have plenty of guns and bullets.
Steve Adams
I smell smoke.
Pierre Anton
Now that you make mention, I do, mes amis. If any of you smoke the pipe, put it out at once. We have ammunition in this cabin. If it should catch fire, it will be very bad.
Steve Adams
There ain't nobody smoking. Anton, Steve.
Paki
By khaki, sluggier.
Straight Arrow
Yeah, Paki. There's your smoke, Anton. Seeping in through the chinks in the backlogs.
Pierre Anton
The back, Montan. No, Monsieur Adams. Back there is the shed. The shed where he stored all the ammunition.
Straight Arrow
The ammunition. Packie, grab your rifle.
Paki
Come along, Prado, Pino, Steve, out the back way.
Straight Arrow
The rest of you stand by. It may be a false alarm.
Paki
There's a shed, Steve. Right up close against the side of the cabin.
Straight Arrow
Yeah, and there's no sign of it. Hey, somebody ran out of the shed.
Paki
It's that Bleak Polecat. He's hightailing for the woods. Come back here. Blast your hide. You missed him. He's gone.
Straight Arrow
Never mind him. Look at the shed.
Paki
Yeah. Flames.
Straight Arrow
We're too late. The flames will reach the ammunition. The whole place will go up any minute. Get downtown on the crew out of there fast.
Steve Adams
No.
Straight Arrow
Ain't that too bad.
Spade
Has gone up in smoke.
Steve Adams
The shed and the cabin both.
Pierre Anton
If I could put my hands on that vid. Posh, Bleak.
Straight Arrow
Well, no use crying over spilled milk, Anton. The damage is done.
Pierre Anton
Hey, now we have bad time, no? With only a few bullets left for our guns.
Steve Adams
Miss Purse must have seen that blaze. It's only a question of time.
Straight Arrow
Well, Anton, there's no use standing here.
Pierre Anton
And what you suggest, monsieur?
Straight Arrow
You and your men go to the mess hall. That's the next best spot to set up your defenses at once.
Pierre Anton
Hello, mes amis. To the mess hall.
Spade
March.
Pierre Anton
We can do the best we can, eh, my friend?
Steve Adams
There's still plenty of food there. Leastwise, we won't starve.
Straight Arrow
Packy.
Paki
Right here, Steve.
Straight Arrow
I'll show you.
Paki
Give me the high shine, partner.
Straight Arrow
The Nez Perce are outside Gunsight Notch right now. There's no doubt Bleak is working with them. Kano, we gotta find out what they're planning to do.
Paki
It won't be easy.
Straight Arrow
There's only one way to get into the Nez Perce camp. And listen.
Paki
It's no dice, Steve. First off, that beacon bridge. Spot us in a minute. Besides, your engines, to get in among that crew, you'd have to. Why, Cactus? That's what you're thinking, huh?
Straight Arrow
Yeah, Packy.
Paki
Sundown Valley in the hidden cave. You reckon we can make it, Steve? We'll have to slip through Gun Sight and Notch and pass the Nez Perce without being spotted.
Straight Arrow
We can make it, partner. The moon will be gone mighty soon. It's always darkest before dawn. We'll make it. And then. Sundown Valley in the hidden cave. A straight arrow. Saddle up, Packy.
Narrator
A short distance from the Broken Bow ranch house lay Sundown Valley. And in it, through a secret entrance known only to Steve Adams and Paki. A vast subterranean cave. The walls of the cave glitter with crystals of gold. From an unknown source comes light that spreads. A shimmering gleam everywhere. And standing in the glowing light is a great golden palomino. Easy there, big horse. A Comanche bow and Comanche arrows hang on the wall. There is Comanche war paint. Comanche garb. In a moment, Steve Adams, rancher, is gone. And in his place.
Pierre Anton
Yes, Gary, it is I.
Straight Arrow
Straight arrow.
Narrator
A clatter of hooks in the vast vaulted cave. An Indian war hoop that rings from the glittering rocks out into the open. Gallops the Great golden palomino Fury and riding bareback, clad in Indian garb from head to toe. Straight Arrow on the trail of justice.
Straight Arrow
Pennywolf Curry.
Narrator
Several hours after sunrise, the red man and Packy threw rein within sight of Gunsight Notch.
Paki
Them blasted Nez Percer moved up since we snuck out last night. Straight here. They're right close to the entrance to Gunsite Notch now.
Straight Arrow
Yes, Packy.
Paki
You reckon they're getting ready to set an attack?
Straight Arrow
Not yet, Nahone. They have built campfires. Their ponies are on the picket line.
Paki
Hey, Kino, I reckon they ain't no hurry now that Bleak burned up most of that there ammunition. You still aim to do some spying?
Straight Arrow
Yes, I must.
Paki
That's mighty risky.
Straight Arrow
Many of them wear blankets. Without my Comanche headdress and war paint, I may have no trouble.
Paki
Better make certain you keep that blanket wrapped around you plenty tight.
Straight Arrow
Wait here farming the honey. I will return up. Fury.
Narrator
For over an hour, Straight Arrow moved through the Nez Perce camp disguised as one of them. Not until he got the information he needed did he leave as quietly as he had. Come.
Paki
My Cactus, am I glad to see you back straight away. What'd you find out?
Straight Arrow
They will attack just before nightfall.
Paki
You're certain of that?
Straight Arrow
I overheard Bleak talking to Chief Buffalo Hyde. Bleak and his partner, a man named Spade.
Paki
Two of the renegades.
Straight Arrow
Yeah, two renegades and a hundred nez Perce against 20. Without ammunition, that 20 won't stand a chance. Hacky, I want you to ride for.
Paki
Help to the railroad.
Straight Arrow
Yes, I know you can't bring help back by nightfall, but bring it as soon as you can.
Paki
Much good that'll do. Mesquite and Anton and all the rest will be done for you.
Straight Arrow
Perhaps not.
Paki
You mean you got a plan?
Straight Arrow
Yes, Packy, I have.
Paki
What is it?
Straight Arrow
I would rather not say. First I must get back. Then we shall see. Here, Packy, take this.
Paki
Hey, you. Hand me your straight arrow wrist kit.
Straight Arrow
I have hidden a message inside. The railroad men will pay more attention if they know the message comes from Straight Arrow Tino.
Paki
They sure will. All right, Straight Arrow. Me and Paint will cover ground faster than.
Spade
Wait a.
Straight Arrow
Well, Packy.
Paki
It just now hit me. You're going back.
Straight Arrow
I am?
Paki
Oh, but you can't.
Straight Arrow
Why not?
Paki
Because the Nez Perz have moved up. Dagnabbit. They're camp right smack in front of Gunsight Notch. It's uphill all the way, and you'll have to cut right through the middle of them.
Straight Arrow
Fury is fast. He will do it. Manatua my friend.
Paki
Up Fury straight arse by cactus. You let him go, maybe he will get through.
Bleak
Yeah, Buffalo, I'd I tell you, it's gonna be as easy as rolling off a log.
Spade
That's right, chief. You can't have more than a few rounds of ammunition left. We'll bunch up and bust right through the notch and swamp every last one of them and just leave Pierre Anton to me. I'll handle him.
Bleak
Hey, what in blazes.
Spade
A red man. Well, he's coming like a house of fire.
Bleak
He's fixing to get by us. Hey, that there Straight Arrow, stop him.
Narrator
Cut him down, please.
Straight Arrow
Look out one side, Palomino. C1.
Narrator

Relying on speed and surprise, Straight Arrow sent his great stallion Fury smashing through the Nez Perce camp and up through the narrow notch. And a few moments later, outside the lumber camp mess hall.
Straight Arrow
Teddy, hurry home. How's Mesquite?
Steve Adams
By gravy, it is straight. Error. Anton, didn't I tell you? Didn't I tell you it was here?
Pierre Anton
Red man. It is good you have come. We hear the shooting from down below. And Mesquite recognized the Palomino.
Steve Adams
What beats me is what happened to Steve Adams and Paki.
Straight Arrow
They were with you? Mesquite?
Steve Adams
Yeah, last night. Disappeared right after that blaze. I told Anton they most Likely went for help. Is that right, Red man? Did you run across him?
Straight Arrow
The help should come from the railroad. It should be here by midnight.
Steve Adams
Hi, Ginger. There. You hear that, Anton? We're safe.
Straight Arrow
Not so fast, Mesquite. Midnight will be too late.
Steve Adams
Huh? What's that?
Pierre Anton
Too late. What do you mean? Straight Arrow.
Straight Arrow
The Nez Perce outnumber you five to one, Anton. They plan to attack just before nightfall.
Steve Adams
Before nightfall? Redman, we got to do something.
Pierre Anton
A mesquite. It is of no use. There is nothing we can do.
Straight Arrow
You will surrender, Anton.
Pierre Anton
Surrender, men? No, never. If we die, then we shall die. But we do not surrender. Red men. There is no way out.
Straight Arrow
You are wrong, Anton.
Pierre Anton
I do not comprehend.
Straight Arrow
Look down toward Gunsight Notch. From here it is all downhill, smooth and even.
Pierre Anton
The hooves of the horses and the wagons, they make it smooth.
Steve Adams
Red man, what are you driving at?
Straight Arrow
Wait until nightfall, Mesquite. When the Nez Perce attack, we shall be ready for them.
Bleak
All right, Juneez purse. Let's get going.
Spade
Well, here we go.
Bleak
Yes. Babe ul shebang.
Spade
Yeah.
Bleak
This is one time Roper lynch is going to get his orders carried out. Smash that lumber. Can't be said. It'll be smashed plenty.
Pierre Anton
Will it wreck the railroad?
Bleak
Good. Slow em down. Can't lay rails without you got cross ties. Know what I keep thinking about, Spade?
Spade
What?
Bleak
The way you and me gummed up the works. Anton didn't even suspect it.
Spade
You know what I keep thinking about?
Bleak
Sure. Same thing.
Spade
No. I keep thinking about that Comanche straight arrow.
Pierre Anton
Yes.
Spade
He's up there with Anton and the rest.
Bleak
Sure he is. That's Jim Dandy. Cause it means he's done for Sam as they are.
Spade
I don't know, Blake.
Bleak
He's bound to be. There's no way to stop us.
Spade
Maybe not. But that Straight Arrow is a mighty smart hombre.
Bleak
So am I.
Spade
He must have known what we was fixing to do.
Bleak
Suppose he did.
Spade
Well, I don't like it, I tell you. Why should anybody deliberately put himself in a trap? Bleak, Maybe he's got some kind of scheme cooked up.
Bleak
Don't be loco.
Spade
But he's straight error.
Bleak
I don't give a dang who he is. There's no way out for any of them. Button your lip. Here's the narrow part of the notch ahead of us. We're closing up and moving in.
Steve Adams
Anton, do you reckon this scheme of the red man's will work?
Pierre Anton
It is a gamble, Meskite.
Steve Adams
Feels mighty strange staying out here in the open instead of taking shelter.
Pierre Anton
The sun goes down. It is almost nightfall.
Steve Adams
Yeah. I wish Straight Arrow was here with us.
Pierre Anton
We do as we were told. Mesquite, the red man, he is in hiding close to the notch. He says he will give us the signal.
Steve Adams
Can you make out the notch?
Pierre Anton
It becomes darker. It is hard to observe. Hey, Larkin, ready with the big hammer?
Bleak
Yeah, Anton. We're standing by.
Pierre Anton
It must not fail. If it should fail, we are finished.
Steve Adams
Anton, listen. Means they must be come through the notch right now. Watch that red man waiting for her. Once they get through, they can spread out.
Pierre Anton
Patience, Mesquite. He will not fail us.
Steve Adams
But he was gonna send a signal. And what if they spotted him? He's down there, close to the notch. If they.
Pierre Anton
Oh, Mosquito, do not even dream of such a thing.
Steve Adams
Now I can make out the engine ponies. Anton, I hate to say it, but.
Pierre Anton
I'm a sacre ble. An arrow. Look, look, look. It hit the log right beside us.
Steve Adams
It's a gold arrow. It's from Straight Arrow. It's the signal.
Pierre Anton
Oui. The signal. But of course. Ah, mes amis, these logs are stacked 20ft high. Larsen, Fenty, do as we've been told. Knock loose the stakes that hold them in place. Come on. Quickly, quickly. Now.
Narrator
The giant logs, each 10ft long, turned over and over, rolling down the slope. Gradually, they picked up speed, turning faster and faster down the smooth, beaten trail that led directly to Gunsight Notch. And in the path of those logs.
Bleak
Hey, Spade, look there.
Pierre Anton
What's biting you?
Spade
Bleak, what's wrong?
Bleak
I don't know. There's something up ahead. Something moving.
Pierre Anton
Breek.
Spade
Jumping mackerel.
Bleak
The logs here coming down on us like a house of fire. Hundreds of them.
Pierre Anton
Turn around. Get out.
Narrator
Right back through the nudge.
Spade
Right.
Narrator
Helpless before the rolling wave of giant timber, the Nez Perce were thrown into panic. Dropping their weapons, they kicked their horses into a frantic race to survive. Using spur and whip, Bleak and Spade joined the stampede, and together, Padman and Indians fled as the great logs jammed and rolled Gunsight Notch to the flat prairie below. By midnight, when Packy arrived with a column of armed men from the railroad camp, there was no sign of the beaten Nez Perce.
Pierre Anton
Eh, bie, Monsieur Paqui, we have won, eh? The battle, she is over before it starts.
Paki
How in blazes did you manage? We didn't spot a single Nez Perce anyplace.
Steve Adams
That's because they skedaddled.
Paki
Coming up through the Notch. There was logs all over the ground. And there was Injun rifles and war Clubs, arrows and lances. Looked like they were scared to death.
Pierre Anton
Oh, mon ami, you also would be frightened if you saw these logs coming down on you, no?
Paki
So that was Straight Error's idea, was it?
Steve Adams
It sure was, Paki. I tell you, them varmints must still be running.
Paki
Pino probably won't stop this side of the Pacific Ocean. Pass me Straight Air. Sure put a spoke in Lynch's wheel this time.
Pierre Anton
There will be no danger with the lumber camp. Now, I tell you, the railroad, she get plenty of timber, eh?
Paki
That sure will, Anton. And you better get busy, Prada, because they'll need it. She, come to think of it. Where is he?
Steve Adams
Where's who?
Narrator
Packy.
Paki
Straight Air.
Steve Adams
Why? Why? Don't know.
Paki
He ain't showed up yet?
Bleak
No.
Steve Adams
Ain't hiding her hair of him.
Straight Arrow
Do not worry, Mesquite. I am here.
Paki
There. There he is.
Steve Adams
Well durned if he ain't by cespers, Red man. We was plumb concerned. What held you up?
Straight Arrow
I was busy, Mesquite. I went after these two men. Come here, both of you.
Bleak
You got us. You got us. Easy on that rope.
Pierre Anton
Sacre. Bleak and Spade. A straight arrow. You capture them?
Straight Arrow
I came across them out beyond the notch. They gave me very little trouble. Paki. You will see that they are handed over to the law.
Paki
It'll be a pleasure. Come here, you sidewinders.
Spade
Easy.
Bleak
A Stratton rope.
Paki
It stays tight around you till you get inside of a cell. What's the matter, Bleak? You got something to say?
Bleak
It was me Stack em logs up in the first place. I thought I was doing Anton a bad turn and straight arrows showed up. One thing I never figured.
Steve Adams
You're gonna save your breath, mister. You never figured your own mistake'd be turned against you, is that it?
Bleak
Yeah. I said it'd be easy as rolling off a log. And it was only because of the red man, the logs roll the wrong.
Narrator

Podcast Information:
In "Gunsight Notch | Straight Arrow," listeners follow the transformation of Steve Adams, a ranch owner, into Straight Arrow, a mysterious and heroic Comanche figure dedicated to upholding justice in the tumultuous frontier. As Steve and his companion Paki encounter threats from both human and Native American adversaries, the episode weaves a tale of deception, bravery, and strategic combat.
Arrival at Broken Bow Ranch: Steve Adams and his friend Paki return to the Broken Bow cattle ranch, only to find it deserted and a note indicating that Mesquite Molly has left to assist a lumberman named Pierre Anton. They quickly deduce that trouble is brewing, particularly related to railroad expansion and timber operations in the area.
Investigation at Gunsite Notch: Straight Arrow (Steve Adams) and Paki set out for Gunsite Notch, the location of Anton's lumber camp. They discover signs of Nez Perce activity and suspect collusion with local antagonists, Bleak and Spade, who are allied with the nefarious Robert Lynch aiming to sabotage the railroad.
Confrontation with Pierre Anton: Upon meeting Anton, tensions rise as Bleak criticizes Anton's lumber stacking methods, which pose a significant safety hazard. The argument escalates until Straight Arrow and Paki arrive, escalating the situation further by warning of an impending Nez Perce attack.
The Lumber Camp Ambush: Bleak and Spade attempt to burn down the ammunition shed to cripple Anton's defenses. However, Straight Arrow's timely intervention prevents complete disaster, though the shed and cabin are largely destroyed. Anton resigns to the imminent attack, believing they are defenseless.
Straight Arrow’s Transformation: Steve Adams retreats to a secret subterranean cave in Sundown Valley, undergoing a transformation into Straight Arrow, donning Comanche war paint and mounting his majestic palomino horse, Fury. This metamorphosis signifies his commitment to fighting injustice.
Strategic Maneuvers: Straight Arrow infiltrates the Nez Perce camp disguised as one of them, gathering crucial intelligence about their planned attack before nightfall. He relays this information to Paki, urging him to seek help from the railroad, though time is against them.
Climactic Battle at Gunsight Notch: As night approaches, Straight Arrow devises a plan to thwart the Nez Perce assault. With logs precariously stacked by Bleak and Spade, they are manipulated into a trap where the logs are released down the steep slope of Gunsight Notch. The rolling logs cause chaos among the Nez Perce warriors, leading to their panic and retreat. Concurrently, Straight Arrow captures Bleak and Spade, ensuring they face justice.
Resolution: With the Nez Perce threat neutralized and the antagonists apprehended, peace is restored to the Broken Bow ranch. Straight Arrow's heroism not only saves the day but also reinforces his role as a guardian of the frontier.
