Narrator
Here's adventure, here's romance.
Cisco Kid
Here's the famous Robin Hood of the Old west.
Narrator
The cisco kid. Now, the Cisco Kid. In our gripping story Hour of Terror, no human motive is more sinister and deadly than that which prompts a lynching. No human action carries such stark overtones of terror or reveals mankind in a worse light. In the days of the Old west, it was an attempted lynching that provided the famous Cisco Kid with one of his most breathtaking adventures and nearly cost him his life. Our story opens late one afternoon on a single street of the frontier town of Buckthorn. In little groups, men are talking with a casualness that does not conceal the tenseness beneath the surface. How's it going, Sam?
Sam
Most everybody's fallen in line, guy. But them that ain't for the lynching won't do nothing to try to prevent it.
Narrator
Well, they better not.
Pancho
I'm going to see that Joe Love
Narrator
in the swings for killing my brother if it's the last thing I do.
Sam
Cause there's Emma that'll testify your brother drew first guy. Also that he was bothering this Mandolin Cafe and that's what caused Joe to step in.
Narrator
I know all that Same. You don't have to tell me. The sheriff's stand pat.
Sam
He's over at the jail and he aims to stay right there. Says he's gonna see to it that Joe's brought to trial in spite of high water. Says nobody's gonna get jail out of that cell.
Narrator
Looks like we're gonna have to shoot the sheriff down then. About another hour it'll be dark and then we.
Sam
Hey, guy.
Pancho
Yeah?
Sam
Who are them two hombres up at the other end of the street?
Narrator
The two riding this way?
Sam
Yeah.
Narrator
I don't know. Never saw them before. We better go talk to them. Sim. Let's go.

Pancho
Undercurrent of something or other than this. Stan Poncho. Make no mistake about that.
Poncho
Nobody's talking on the streets. They look at us too.
Pancho
You do not have to pay any attention to them, chico. No, keep right onto the cafe. I presume there's a cafe in this
Poncho
town down the streets. Just go far to smell their food cooking.
Pancho
Your nose for food is as keen as that of a hound dog, amigo.
Poncho
Blood. You are right.
Pancho
I see the sign now in the cafe.
Poncho
Cafe right across the street from the jail.
Pancho
No, that's right. There is, well, two homies walk out in the middle of the street in front of us.
Cisco Kid
What do you want sayor?
Narrator
We want to know who you are, what you do in the town. How long you mean to stay here.
Sam
Yeah, and we want to know right now.
Poncho
These Colombo is not very friendly, Cisco.
Pancho
You are quite right, Pancho.
Sam
Cisco. Does that mean you're the Cisco Chid?
Pancho
Oh, that is what they call me, Hombre. I do not care for your manner. Or for yours. However, I will answer your questions.
Narrator
What are you doing in town?
Pancho
We are merely riding through your town.
Cisco Kid
As for how long we are going
Pancho
to stay, I do not know.
Poncho
We eat at the cafe first. No?
Narrator
All right, go ahead and eat your meal at the cafe and then just keep going out of town. Savvy?
Pancho
We have not yet decided whether to leave or stay. But since Bancho and I Do not like to be ordered around. The chances are we will stay longer than we might have otherwise. Out of our way, old man.
Cisco Kid
Now look here. Get out of our way, I said.
Pancho
I never
Narrator
ride us down, will they? My coyotes and my great mind.
Sam
Easy, guy, easy. You won't gain nothing by drilling in the bag.
Narrator
Yeah. How do we know about their friends, Joe Loudens?
Sam
I believe what Cisco said, that they're just riding through town. If you take my advice, guy, you won't tangle with us. Kid, he's just playing fork lightning.
Narrator
I still ain't gonna take any chances on him being friendly with Loudon. Come on. Go to the cafe and keep an eye on Sisko.
Cisco Kid
Be right there.
Narrator
Joe. Ms. Madge just sent a boy over from the cafe. She wants to know what to bring over for your supper tonight.
Pancho
I ain't hungry, Sheriff. Look, there's something going on in town. I can see along the street from this window.
Narrator
Oh, wouldn't let it bother me too much if I was you, Joe.
Pancho
How can I help let it bother me? I know what it is. Sneaking whelp of a guy Phillips is talking mention. He's convincing them, too. They'll be coming here after me, Sheriff. They'll be coming here.
Narrator
Cut it out, Joe. I can talk to him. I know every man jack in town. You don't need to be scared.
Pancho
Ain't scared of any ordinary thing.
Narrator
You know that. Sure.
Pancho
This is different. Sheriff, you can't fight this. He's just an animal the mob's digging
Cisco Kid
out of a hole in the ground.
Narrator
I tell you, you got nothing to worry about, Joe. Ain't never been a lynching in this town yet.
Pancho
Can't you get me out of here and take me to another jail in another county?
Narrator
No.
Pancho
You know I'm innocent of that killing, Sheriff. You know Phillips, brother drew first. There's half a dozen witnesses to say so.
Narrator
I ain't denying that, Joe. But the case has got to come to trial.
Pancho
All right, but get me out of here or else give me back my guns. All I'm asking is a chance, that's all. Just a chance.
Narrator
I won't let no harm come to you. I doubt if them hombres come here tonight. They're just letting off steam.
Cisco Kid
But, Sheriff, I tell you, I'll go around and order us some supper.
Narrator
You'll feel better after you eat.
Poncho
Spiral.
Pancho
She's full there. Let them follow us. Pay them no more attention unless they want trouble. Come on, Pancho. Ah, this table will do, Pancho.
Poncho
We watch the door from here.
Cisco Kid
No
Poncho
hombres to meet at the cafes.
Pancho
Buena, senorita.
Poncho
Buenos tande, senorita.
Madge
Do you gents mind waiting a few minutes? I'm getting a couple of meals ready to go out.
Pancho
Not at all, senorita.
Cisco Kid
We are in no hurry.
Poncho
You start to death, that's all.
Pancho
Never mind me, compa. Senorita. He can wait as long as necessary
Poncho
if I just make the joke.
Cisco Kid
All ready to go, Meg?
Madge
About five more minutes, gents.
Poncho
Eyes all red. She's full.
Pancho
She's been crying, amigo. I would say crying a great deal
Poncho
makes nobody happy this town. She's full. Nobody laugh.
Pancho
Nobody make a joke.
Poncho
What's the matter, huh?
Pancho
That is just what I have been wondering. Now I believe I have the answer.
Poncho
What? The answer.
Pancho
A lynching is being planned.
Poncho
Lynching?
Pancho
See? No, no, no, no, no. But those groups of men out on the street, the manner of the people in this. As if they are all waiting for a signal of some sort. I have seen it all before, Pancho.
Poncho
Isn't that why they send you?
Pancho
The crowd probably has something to do with it. Perhaps everything.
Madge
Oh, no, Frank. I can take the toothpickers right on this tray. Did you put on plenty of cornbread for the Joe?
Narrator
Yep.
Cisco Kid
A double order.
Pancho
I will open the door for you, senorita.
Narrator
Wait a minute. Put that tray down, man. I will not put it down, I said.
Pancho
I want to get a look at
Narrator
what's on it under them napkins.
Madge
Oh, you, you coyote guy, Phillips. You're the one who's stirring everybody up to hang Joe.
Narrator
Shut up.
Cisco Kid
You will apologize to the senorita Homri at once. You on my arm at once. Alive.
Narrator
I'm sorry, Madge.
Poncho
Look like party is ready for troubles now. Since two.
Narrator
I've got a great mind.
Sam
Do what?
Narrator
Never mind. If you got any sense at all, you'll get out of this town pronto.
Pancho
On the contrary, Poncho and I are going to stay and see what happens.
Poncho
You better keep out of Cisco's way, hombre.
Pancho
I assume you were taking that tray of food over to the jail, senorita.
Madge
Yes, I was. And now I'll have to fix another one.
Pancho
Pancho and I will walk along with you to see that you have no more trouble. I am quite sure you will not from these two.
Narrator
Martin is something that's none of his business.
Cisco Kid
You're not that far to manage the hands.
Sam
I guess Cisco figured it was his business. You just asked for trouble when you did that guy, huh?
Narrator
Don't tell me that Omry's just Riding through town. He's a friend of Joe Louden's. He's here to see that Joe gets away.
Sam
It's almost off now, Guy. What are you going to do?
Narrator
I'm going to get the boys started
Pancho
over toward the J.
Narrator
There's a bunch of them over there with a storm. I like your attention, boys, for a minute or two. Looks like we're going to get some opposition when we get over to that jail. I mean from the Cisco Kid. Some of you may have seen him ride down the street a while ago. And no question in my mind what is on Joe Louden's side.
Cisco Kid
Now, we all know that Joe Louden's a killer.
Narrator
He's proved that. We all know the best way to handle a killer is string him out. And that's what we're gonna do. String him up. Francisco Kid gets in the way, gun him down. Eminence hot now, we're gonna start in five minutes. The sheriff don't hand Loudon over, we'll storm that jail and burn. We've been talk, Cisco and Pancho while Madge is out trying to get Joe to eat. Doubt if she can, though. Hope you boys excuse me if I go right ahead and eat my dinner here in the office.
Pancho
Oh, by all means, eat it to you, Sheriff.
Poncho
Look at that steak, Pancho. Quito part of the steak. Look at that steak. But I not say it.
Narrator
As I was saying, Cisco, look at that steak. I've heard a great deal about you and I sure appreciate your offer to help guard Joe Louden, but I don't look for any particular trouble.
Pancho
Sheriff, have you been out on the street?
Narrator
Hello. Not for some hours yet.
Pancho
But I'm afraid you're gonna have plenty
Poncho
of trouble tonight very soon too.
Cisco Kid
Hmm.
Narrator
Well, now, I'll tell you how it is, Cisco. Joe shot down an umbre named Phillips. Seems that Phillips insulted Madge Kane over in the cafe. Well, Joe started to thrash him as he deserved and were born. Phillips drew a gun and Joe shot him.
Pancho
Self defense?
Narrator
I'd say so, Cisco, but that's for the jury to decide. So I had to arrest Joe just the same.
Pancho
But at the moment, the merits of the case are not the important thing. I urge you to get the prisoner out of this jail while there is still time.
Narrator
Ah, them fellas down on the street are just talk.
Madge
There are the bombs coming this way.
Narrator
Isn't that true? Well, I'll have a look out the door.
Pancho
If you will give me the key
Cisco Kid
to the prisoner's cell, I will let him out. No I know B. I will be
Pancho
responsible to see that he has turned
Cisco Kid
back to the law in some other town.
Poncho
Just go keep his word.
Cisco Kid
Please, sheriff, let us save the man's life at all costs. Look at that, sheriff. And then you say you do not expect any trouble.
Poncho
I see. The keys of the sheriffy.
Madge
And the keys.
Narrator
Leave them.
Cisco Kid
He's alone.
Narrator
I mean that.
Madge
What do we do, sister?
Cisco Kid
What do we do?
Pancho
All we can do now, senorita, is to hope the sheriff can live up to his post and talk that mob into going home peaceably if he can. Manuel and I will do what we can. That may not be much. We will see.
Cisco Kid
All right, boys. Reckon that's near enough.
Narrator
What's the idea of calling around at this jail?
Cisco Kid
You know what the idea is, sheriff. We want Joe Louden and we're going to have. I don't believe you will have him.
Narrator
And I ain't obliged to you for interrupting my supper.
Cisco Kid
We ain't gonna waste no more time talking with you. All we want you to do is
Narrator
take a walk up the street.
Cisco Kid
Right now. William, see him out back.
Madge
They shot the sheriff.
Cisco Kid
Ah, we got the troubles, all.
Pancho
You got to take those keys and
Cisco Kid
let the prisoner out of itself. All right, Sitcom. Now if you're not standing there, wait. We cannot let them. Darn this jail, Pancho. All right, let's go. The first man to take one step near this chair will be shot.

Get the sheriff back into his office.
Cisco Kid
He makes me realize. You can get me easy enough. All of you together.
Pancho
But before you do, several of you
Cisco Kid
are going to be shot down. I am not the only one under this roof of his arm. There are holes in the walls of this office, as some of you know, that aren't big enough for a rifle
Pancho
barrel or a shotgun barrel. So who will be the first to rush this jail?
Cisco Kid
I am going to shut this office door.
Pancho
But you will still be watched. Most of you are law abiding citizens.
Cisco Kid
Don't let yourselves be talked into this by one who has a personal desire for vengeance.
Poncho
You at first think it over and
Cisco Kid
then go to your home.
Poncho
Find yourself in this new blood. He.
Sam
He's dead.
Pancho
There's nothing more we can do for him. Chico.
Madge
Cisco.
Pancho
Well, my guns must be in this office somewhere. Let me have him. Quick momento. Say your job. Why? You and I are not helping you escape from the law, you understand. But this mob, sis. The mob is something else again. We will protect you from the mob to the utmost of our ability. How about me having my guns to defend myself?
Poncho
You wait till Cisco s. You look
Pancho
like an honest man, Senor Cisco.
Madge
Joe's words just as good as his bond. And everybody around you knows it.
Sam
Very well.
Pancho
You may have your guns on two conditions. Name of Cisco. First, that you will not use them unless it is absolutely necessary.
Sam
I agree.
Pancho
And second, that when this mob has left, you will turn yourself to the sheriff of some adjoining county. I agree to that, sir. Very well. You will find guns in the cabinet.
Cisco Kid
Take what you want.
Pancho
Senior Joe. Cisco, you're a square shooter.
Cisco Kid
I'm so on.
Madge
He sure is Joe, tell me you gonna make a run for it.
Pancho
I don't know yet. My, I would advise against it.
Poncho
Sayor your mob shoots you down. Bang, bang. Just like that, Senor George.
Pancho
Indeed. They are talking it over out there now. They may decide to disperse. If they do not, then we will have a fight on our hands.
Sam
Some of these hombres want to do
Pancho
just as Cisco said.
Sam
They want to go home.
Narrator
Ain't many of them want to go home. But you're right. Sin I better talk them. I heard what Cisco said about others in that jail. Sides himself being armed. Far as I'm concerned, I figure that's just a bluff on his part.
Cisco Kid
Now wait a minute.
Narrator
And even if it ain't, there's more than enough of us here to storm that jail. Easy. Of course, some of you are going
Cisco Kid
to yell up on the rest of us. All right, all right.
Narrator
That sounds better. Here's an idea that just come to me. We'll fire the back of this jail
Cisco Kid
and force them to come out the open.
Sam
That's the stump town and that's the best thing to do.
Cisco Kid
Sure, and we can pick them off
Narrator
easy as they come out.
Sam
Want me to take a cool min and go set that fire, guy?
Narrator
Sure, go ahead. Just be sure it catches Jordan burns up nice and hot. More than one way to skin a cat. Them hombres will find out.
Madge
Around to the back of the jail.
Pancho
I can't do any harm, Madge. I am not so sure. Serious Joe. Go out into the jail and see what you can see. That is just exactly what I'm thinking of. Chico.
Cisco Kid
Hurry now.
Poncho
See also.
Pancho
Say, Richard, this is no place for you. Just what I've been thinking. Suppose I ask the leaders of that mob to let you through so you can go back to the cafe.
Madge
I. I don't know, Cisco. That guy Phillips hates me like poison. I wouldn't put it past him to shoot me down. Same goes for Sim Blaine. Only he ain't quite so bad.
Narrator
Maybe.
Pancho
I do not think they would dare harm you in front of the rest of the men there.
Cisco Kid
Anyway.
Pancho
If the attack comes, you will not be safe in this jail. You better do what Cisco says, man. Why didn't I have one of us
Cisco Kid
out there on guard?
Poncho
What we do now, Cisco? What do we do?
Pancho
There is no way we can fight the fire, see?
Cisco Kid
I smell the smoke now.
Pancho
You gotta leave her now, Madge. See, you are a good man, Senor Joe, and an honest man to think of the senorita ahead of yourself.
Cisco Kid
I will talk to the Leaders. Then you eat the match at the cafe as here in this office. Earlier this evening she brought food to the sheriff and to the prisoner. I ask that you let her through to return to the cafe. I have your words, you are not be harmed. Yeah, but you sure ain't my word that you won't be harmed. Go ahead and hurry. I can wait.
Poncho
We gotta get out of this place soon.
Pancho
Hey, Pancho, we better make a break
Cisco Kid
for it right now.
Pancho
Shoot our way out if necessary. Hey, Cisco.
Cisco Kid
Cecil.
Pancho
Joe.
Cisco Kid
That dirty low down coyote. The guy Phillips didn't keep his word.
Pancho
He stopped mad.
Cisco Kid
We will see about that. All right. Dominick, you promised to let the salient through to the cafe. We ain't letting anybody through any. We gotta leave any soon the fire getting bigger and hotter and hotter and bigger.
Poncho
Hey, Joe.
Pancho
As soon as I have the attention of those hombres, you and Punch will get around to the canyon and back of his jail. I looked it over when I came to the sheriff's office. There should be plenty of places to hide out for the time being.
Poncho
Why do you do it, Cheese?
Sam
Go.
Pancho
I am going out to talk to
Cisco Kid
that Phillips coyote and I'm going right now. I do not think they will send. Not until I have had my say to that sneaking pledge breaker. For most of these men here I know have no use for a pledge breaker. No, they will not Only. Not until they listen to what I have to say to you. Now you let the senorita go.
Narrator
All right, Mas.
Cisco Kid
Go on, you coward. Now you are so free with the lives of other people, what are you going to do about your own life?
Narrator
What do you mean? Cisco?
Cisco Kid
You have proved that your word is no good.
Pancho
Nevertheless, you are going to tell these men you were wrong in wanting to lynching your Joe. That is you will if you value your own life.
Narrator
Well, I.
Cisco Kid
I won't. I'll dun you down myself. I want you to have every chance possible only to prove your word. So I will holster my gun and
Pancho
if you care to try your best,
Narrator
I'll beat your brains out.
Cisco Kid
You have far better than I thought you had. The hungry won't make you into a mobster. Fight his own battle.
Madge
Don't ask the way to handle coyotes. My kids.
Cisco Kid
No, no, you. Oh, no, no, no, no.
Sam
Sister.
Cisco Kid
You had a hand at this proposed lynching, did you not? Well, you are his partner. I. I was. But not now. You see, senores, if you try to follow up the ideas of these two
Pancho
mavericks any further, you'll simply be making fools of yourselves.
Cisco Kid
I Suggest, signores, it should all be more comfortable at home.
Pancho
There is nothing you can do to
Cisco Kid
save the jail now.
Pancho
The fire has gained too much headway. And as for you too, hombres, the responsible citizens of this town will see that you are held for the United States Marshal on a charge of murder.
Madge
Cisco, you're just what this town needs.
Pancho
Gracia, senorita. I was fortunate this evening in my, shall I say, my bluffing bluff and nothing. And I was fortunate in having things turn out in favor of Senior Loudon. Which reminds me, senorita, I must find
Madge
him in Pancho to congratulate him, huh?
Pancho
Well, partly, senorita. Also to see that he is put under arrest by another sheriff in a nearby county.
Madge
You mean you'd fight for Joe the way you have tonight, Cisco? Then turn him over to the to the law?
Pancho
Si, senorita. Not that I doubt Senor Joe's word. I am sure he will be exonerated at the trial, but the law says he must be tried for killing a man. So. And rest assured, Pancho and I will do all we can to help Senor Joe.
Poncho
The jury say Senor Joe shoot in self defense.
Pancho
No, See, they did. And the jury brought in a verdict of not guilty.
Poncho
See you, Joe. Go free,
Pancho
Joe.
Cisco Kid
That verdict pleased me very much indeed.
Poncho
So please say you need the match.
Pancho
See, Pancho, I would say it did.
Poncho
You know they make a very nice couple. They want to give Cisco the town
Cisco Kid
and a box on.
Poncho
And want Cisco to be the mayor and the council and the sheriff.
Pancho
I appreciate the gratitude, Pancho, but I have no desire to be a town official.
Poncho
Pancho not got the desire in the industry. And Pancho were a town official once.
Pancho
You were a town official once, Chico?
Poncho
Yeah, Pancho a town official in a little bit of a town down south.
Pancho
Well, I never knew that before.
Poncho
Oh, she a little bit of a town.
Cisco Kid
Well, what town official were you, Pancho?
Poncho
Pancho the dog catcher, Cisco. You were the dog catcher?
Cisco Kid
Yeah.
Pancho
Well, how long did you hold that job?
Poncho
It is two days, Cisco. You held the job of dog catcher
Pancho
for only two days?
Poncho
Yes, Cisco.
Pancho
Well, why did you not hold the
Cisco Kid
job longer than that?
Poncho
Because Poncho catched the dog.
Cisco Kid
Oh, Boncho.
Narrator
Disco Kid was played by Jack Mather, Poncho by Harry Lang.

This episode transports listeners to the tense and dusty streets of Buckthorn, a frontier town simmering beneath the threat of mob violence. In “Hour of Terror,” the legendary Cisco Kid and his loyal companion Pancho arrive just as a lynch mob is gathering to exact vengeance on Joe Louden, an innocent man accused of murder. The story explores themes of justice, mob mentality, honor, and heroism in the classic radio serial style, with digitally restored audio capturing the atmospheric throes of the Old West.
“Since Pancho and I do not like to be ordered around, the chances are we will stay longer than we might have otherwise.” – Cisco Kid ([05:29])
Inside the Jailhouse ([06:17]–[07:15])
Sheriff refuses to hand Joe Louden over without a trial, but Joe, aware of the mob’s intentions, pleads for his life:
“You know I'm innocent of that killing, Sheriff… All I'm asking is a chance, that's all." – Joe Louden ([07:06])
Cisco's Suspicion and Determination ([08:26]–[08:35])
Cisco and Pancho deduce that a lynching is likely, based on the town’s attitude:
“A lynching is being planned.” – Cisco Kid ([08:33])
“If Cisco gets in the way, gun him down!” – Guy Phillips ([10:54])
Planned Escape and Moral Stand ([11:36]–[13:13])
Cisco offers to help guard Joe and urges the sheriff to move the prisoner, which he refuses.
Cisco makes a passionate plea:
“Let us save the man's life at all costs. Look at that, sheriff. And then you say you do not expect any trouble?” – Cisco Kid ([12:46], [12:52])
Confrontation with the Mob ([13:13]–[14:11])
When the mob arrives, Cisco stands firm inside the jail, threatening defense:
"The first man to take one step near this chair will be shot.” – Cisco Kid ([14:11])
“We’ll fire the back of this jail and force them to come out in the open.” – Guy’s Camp ([19:01])
Showdown with Guy Phillips ([21:37]–[22:14])
Cisco confronts Guy over his broken word, induces him to confess his motives, and appeals to the crowd’s sense of honor:
“You have proved that your word is no good… You will tell these men you were wrong in wanting to lynch Joe.” – Cisco Kid ([22:11]–[22:14])
Turning the Tide
As the crowd witnesses Guy’s duplicity, they begin to disperse. Sam, previously part of the mob, turns away from the violence:
“If you try to follow up the ideas of these two mavericks any further, you'll simply be making fools of yourselves.” – Cisco Kid ([23:12])
Jail is Lost, Law Prevails ([23:22]–[23:35])
The fire claims the jail, but Cisco ensures responsible parties are held to account, vowing to deliver them to the U.S. Marshal.
Joe Louden’s Fate ([24:01]–[24:31])
Cisco insists Joe must be tried by the law, not lynched by a mob, reinforcing the theme of lawful justice:
“Not that I doubt Senor Joe's word… but the law says he must be tried for killing a man.” – Cisco Kid ([24:07])
Later, the jury finds Joe acted in self-defense and declares him not guilty (“The jury brought in a verdict of not guilty.” – Pancho [24:36]). The episode closes with Cisco and Pancho’s light-hearted banter.
Cisco’s Defiance:
“Since Pancho and I do not like to be ordered around, the chances are we will stay longer than we might have otherwise.” – Cisco Kid ([05:29])
On Mob Justice:
“No human action carries such stark overtones of terror or reveals mankind in a worse light.” – Narrator ([01:57])
Cisco’s Moral Stand:
“Let us save the man's life at all costs.” – Cisco Kid ([12:46])
Pancho’s Humor:
The episode ends with a classic joke:
“Because Pancho catched the dog.” – Pancho, explaining why he was only dog catcher for two days ([25:37])
