Narrator
A fiery horse with a speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty Hio. Silver, the Lone Ranger.
Tex Edmonds
It's.
Narrator
With his faithful Indian companion, Tottle, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the Plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoofbeats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again. The eastbound train was only a few miles out of Sandy Gulch when a rough looking man stood up in a passenger car and pulled the stop cord.
Tex Edmonds
This is where we stop, everybody. Hey, get away from that cord. What's the idea? Shut up, you. This is a hold up. Sit down, everybody. First one to move gets a bullet. All right. You may not get any gold shipment, Dave. Now we shall rob the people in this car before we leave, eh? Let us get busy. Come on.
Narrator
Later, in the back office of the cafe in Sandy Gulch, five men met with the owner, Gil Stade.
Gil Stade
So everything went off without a hitch.
Tex Edmonds
Yeah, that's fine. Yeah. Dave pulled the cord to stop the train when it reached the grove. While we were waiting, the rest was easy. Senor Gil? Yeah. For a minute I thought I was going to have to plug that conductor. Juan came in just at the right time. Then we robbed the passengers while the other three got the gold shipment. We had to plug that clerk on the train boss before we could get that gold. Well, I guess that couldn't be helped, Jake. But just before you fellas rode in, I saw the sheriff leaving town with a posse. Somebody must have tipped him off. But the hold up very strange, Gail. Nobody could get back here from the train to do that. They do not carry the horses on the cars, you know. That's right. Gilbert, see what you and Jake mean. Juan, where's Tex?
Gil Stade
Why didn't he come back with you fellas?
Tex Edmonds
He was with us waiting in the grove. But I didn't see him afterward. And neither did I. Tex is the newest member of this gang and this was his first job. If I thought he's the one who tipped off the law, I'd. Hi, fellas. Certainly got separated from the rest of you in the getaway, but I see you all got vaccinated. Sit down, Tex. Sure. Hey, what are you all staring at me for? Ill tells you someone tipped off the sheriff. He left town with a posse before we arrived here. Tex. Yeah, that's right. That's it. Look, if I was going to tip off the law about the holdup, I'd have done it so the sheriff would get there when it happened. Unless you wanted them to pick up the trail and catch us with the loot. Hey, maybe that's it. Maybe Tex left a clear trail right back to this office. Don't be a fool, Dave. If I'd planned something like that, I wouldn't have shown up here at all. Maybe you wouldn't at that. Come on, stop being suspicious just because I lost the gang after the hold up. I covered my trail here just like you others did. We didn't see you helping get the gold. I was covering the engineer and fireman. I saw the others make for the express car. Sure, one went aboard and all the rest he operated from one side of the plane. I figured somebody ought to watch on the other side of the plane in case some of those aboard start to get off. There is something to what you say. Of course there is. I waited with drawn guns until I heard all you riding away. Then I followed. That's why no one saw me helping Carambo. He has shown more sense than witty, senor Guilt. I for one am sorry for suspecting you, Ted.
Gil Stade
All right, all right, forget it.
Tex Edmonds
It's funny how the sheriff got word so soon about the robbery. Maybe he took the posse out for some other reason. Well, forget the sheriff. How about divvying the gold now, Gil?
Gil Stade
No, no, not now.
Tex Edmonds
Someone might be nosing around in my private safe over there. You'll each get your share when the time comes. But do not keep us waiting too long, Senior Gill. You'll get it, don't worry. All right. Now all you better ease into the cafe for a while. Get together later.
Gil Stade
Juan, you wait. I want to talk to you.
Tex Edmonds
Oh, but of course. Well, what is it you want to say, Senor Guild? Look, Juan, I don't trust that new fellow. Tex, neither do I. Do you really think he got in torch with a chair? No. I happen to know the sheriff went.
Gil Stade
Out in hopes of picking up our.
Tex Edmonds
Trail from that stage hold up few days ago. Followed the trail of the Cricks and trying to go on from there ever since. You'll have a fit when he hears about the train robbery. He would have a worse fit if he knew the Gang was staying right here in town, eh?
Gil Stade
Yeah, yeah, now, but Tex.
Tex Edmonds
I accused him just to see how he'd react. Noticed he got sort of red in the face. But why should he? He's in the robbery with us. I found a letter Tex had hidden in his bunk. Juan. Yeah, I'll read Potter material. Listen to this. Dear son, I think it's foolish for you to risk your life trying to get evidence that those outlaws killed your father. Hey, he must be the son of a sheriff he knew. Yeah, that's right. Gonna send Tex out to my ranch on an errand shortly. You and Dave follow and then see that he doesn't come back. One now go join the others. When you and Dave see Tex leave town, you know what to do.
Narrator
One went to the cafe and joined the other members of the gang who were playing cards at a large table in the corner of the room. Presently, one thought Gil leave his office and approached the table.
Tex Edmonds
Oh, it takes. Yeah.
Gil Stade
Why don't you take a message out to my ranch?
Tex Edmonds
Yeah, sure. All right. Tex, come. Here. Money for you.
Narrator
One watched Tex leave the cafe. Then he spoke to the outlaw named Dave.
Tex Edmonds
Dave, come. Leave the card, huh? You and I have a little job to take care of Senor Giero. What are you talking about, Juan? Put down the cards and come with me. Can't you wait till we're through with this hand? You come with me now. All right. All right. See you later, boys. Where are we going, Juan? What's the boss want, amigo? He wishes us to follow Tex. Follow him? What for? To kill him.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Tottle had heard of the robberies and killings near Sandy Gulch. That afternoon they pitched camp in the hills outside of town. As they were preparing to leave the camp to search the hills for the outlaw hideout, they heard a shot on the trail.
Gil Stade
Hello. That shot seemed close. Go investigate.
Narrator
A few minutes later, the masked man, an Indian, saw a man lying on the trail and his horse standing nearby. They hurriedly drew rein and dismounted.
Gil Stade
He's unconscious. He's been wounded.
Tex Edmonds
Ah. Someone shoot from ambush? Mattie.
Gil Stade
Yes. We'll take him to our camp and do what we can for him. Then we'll try to pick up the trail the one who shot him. All right, let's get busy.
Narrator
Later, Juan returned to town and reported to Gil Stade.
Tex Edmonds
Gil, Juan, do what you want to do. Say I shoot text from ambush and see him pour from his horse. But I did not have a chance to make sure he was dead. Why not? I heard the horsemen coming. I watched for My gully until I masked man engine come along the trail for Tex. Then I leave in a hurry. A mass combre and an Indian you say see? Holy mackerel. They ride a white stallion in the paint.
Narrator
That is right.
Tex Edmonds
They're the ones I thought they were the Lone Ranger and his Indian friend Carambo. I have heard of them. We'll have to do something quick in case Tex is alive and talks. What is there to do here? The sheriff and the posse return to town. I'll go to the sheriff and tell him we've spotted the men who held up the train. What did you say? If Texo talk, if he's alive, the sheriff will think he got wounded in the fight at the train. I'll take the loot out to my ranch so it isn't found here. If he tries to blame us, it'll be his word against ours. I will take the sheriff out to what Tex was shot. Then we'll trade the Mas d' ambre Tex and the Indian. From there we must persuade the sheriff and the posse to kill them on sight, Senor. Yeah, and there'll be no danger of the masked man proving he's on the side of the law. I'll go talk to the sheriff now. Come on.
Narrator
Gil and Juan left the cafe and went to the sheriff's office.
Tex Edmonds
How are you?
Gil Stade
Howdy, Sheriff.
Tex Edmonds
You managed to pick up the trail of those crooks you were after? Ah, confound it. They covered the tracks too well. Then I came back and heard about the train robbery. Soon as the men get ready, I'm leaving again with the posse. Well, perhaps this time you'll have better luck. I sure hope so. A sheriff. Juan has something to tell you that may help you catch those quickly. That is right, Sheriff. I was coming in from Gill's ranch when I saw three hombres thrown off the trail about a mile out. One of them was wearing a mask. Maybe they're the ones we're after. Him was he?
Gil Stade
What's that?
Tex Edmonds
Report that was brought to me says one of the crooks talked with an accident. He's Mexican. Well, Juan saw an Indian with that masked man. You know, any excitement he could have been taken for. A Mexican maybe. Yeah, it could be. I never did find two witnesses. Whoever agreed. Juan will go along. Show you what you saw. Those gunslinger, Sheriff. Good. We'll be ready to leave in about 10 minutes, Juan. All right. I heard the express click on. The train was killed. When we catch those cooks, they'll hang from where they. You better plan on shooting Them on site, Sheriff. You know they know they'll hang at their caught so they'll throw lead if they get the chance. There would be plenty of risky to try to take them alive. Change me to your red. But we'll decide that when we get to them. Come on. I'll tell my deputies to hurry things along. Sooner we get after those killers, the better.
Narrator
After attending to the wounded man at their camp, the Lone Ranger and Tottle picked up Juan's trail in the gully. Juan had cleverly concealed his trail by taking to a shallow water and then leaving the stream at a place where a herd of cattle had been driven across shortly before. It was impossible to tell his tracks from those of the cowpokes who had driven the herd. The masked man and Indian gave up and returned to their camp.
Tex Edmonds
Feller awake? Been trying to get up.
Gil Stade
He's still weak.
Tex Edmonds
Here.
Gil Stade
Take it easy. You'll soon be all right.
Tex Edmonds
I'm all right now. Your mask.
Gil Stade
Don't try to talk now. Just rest. We'll talk later.
Narrator
Tex lay back, but his eyes watched the masked man and Indian as they moved about the camp. The camp was in a grove on a small mesa overlooking the valley. Sometime later, Toddle called the Lone Ranger's attention to something he saw in the far distance near the end of the valley.
Tex Edmonds
Himasabi me see big cloud of dust far away on trail. Seem like many horsemen.
Gil Stade
Get the binoculars, Toddle, and you'll be able to see them better. Maybe some cow folks returning to their ranch from town.
Tex Edmonds
Me get glasses. Lend me watch to be sure.
Narrator
The sheriff and posse, accompanied by Juan, rode along the trail until they reached the place where Tex had fallen from his horse. Juan signaled for a halt.
Tex Edmonds
It was here, Senor Sheriff. I saw the in front of the trail. You see there are the tracks of three horses going toward that mesa there. Yes, that's right, Juan. Maybe they're camped up there in the mesa right now, Sheriff. We'll soon find out. We'll follow the tracks, then spread out and move up on the mesa and surprise them if they are there. Remember, they are killer, Sheriff. Not good to take chances. Everything you ride. Have your guns ready, men. We sight em gun them down before they have a chance to draw. Ride in as quiet as you can so as we'll catch them off guard. Let's get going.
Narrator
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger adventure. Before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments.
Tex Edmonds
Sam.
Narrator
Now to continue. Meantime, Toto, who had continued to watch through Binoculars saw the horseman stop down on the trail. He realized it was a posse and saw the sheriff pointing toward the mesa. He approached the Lone Ranger and told what he had seen.
Tex Edmonds
Sabe them sheriff and posse, methink them plans surround camp. Capture us.
Gil Stade
Then we'll have to move quickly.
Narrator
The masked man and Indian approached Tex, who was now sitting up.
Gil Stade
It's necessary that we leave here at once. Some horsemen are heading toward this mesa. Are you able to ride? But.
Tex Edmonds
But why should I leave with you?
Narrator
I. Tex paused a moment as the thought entered his mind that the horsemen might be the other members of the gang coming to make sure he was dead. He quickly made his decision.
Tex Edmonds
Yes, I reckon I can ride now. I'll go with you. But before we leave, I want to.
Gil Stade
I promise to answer all your questions later. Right now we must move fast. Let's get the horses, Toto. Quickly.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Toto brought the horses, then helped text him out. Though the wounded man was rather shaky on his feet, he seemed to be able to handle himself all right in the saddle there.
Tex Edmonds
Thanks, mister.
Gil Stade
They'll reach here in about 20 minutes or so. We'll be forced to travel rather fast. You think you'll be able to keep up?
Tex Edmonds
I'll keep up with you. Don't worry.
Gil Stade
Good. Let's go. Easy. Steady, fella.
Tex Edmonds
Get out there.
Narrator
Later, the posse gradually moved in on the camp. The sheriff and Juan, who were riding together, drew rein.
Tex Edmonds
Well, here's a camp right enough. But the Arden said min one in here. Looks like those cooks got away. Steady. And from the looks of the campfire, I'd say they got almost a half hour start on us. We took too much time moving in on him. Hey, sir. Found the cracks of three horses heading towards that gully on. Good. We'll get after him. They've had a fairly good head start, but we'll try to catch up to them. Let's get moving, boys. Get up your ass.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Toto had entered the gully with the wounded man Tex and followed the stream which Juan had followed earlier.
Tex Edmonds
Then follow us. Maybe Keema hubby. But it take him a while to get to Mesa.
Gil Stade
He'll do the same thing the man did who we followed a while ago. Toto. We leave the water at the point where that herd crossed.
Tex Edmonds
Come on, get him up.
Narrator
As the Lone Ranger hoped, the posse lost the trail at the point where he, Tottle and Tex left the stream. After riding at a fast pace for some distance, they once more made camp in a remote hollow. Tex Weakened by the riding, lay down again to rest. But before closing his eyes, he spoke to the Lone Ranger.
Tex Edmonds
Don't savvy that mask you must have.
Gil Stade
We're not outlaws. We heard a shot and found you on the trail a few hours ago. If we planned to kill you, we wouldn't have taken care of you.
Tex Edmonds
Yeah, I reckon that's right.
Gil Stade
Do you have any idea who might have tried to kill you? Well, we. We want to help you, Believe me. If you'll trust us.
Tex Edmonds
Reckon since you probably saved my life, I can trust you, mister.
Gil Stade
Good.
Tex Edmonds
I'm Tex Edmonds. My dad was a sheriff.
Gil Stade
We knew a Sheriff Edmonds over at Newton. He was killed by outlaws.
Tex Edmonds
That's right. I. I joined a gang in search of evidence that they killed Dad. I was sure that if I.
Narrator
While the Lone Ranger and Tottle listened, joining with Gil Steed and his men, he told of the train robbery, of the accusation against him when he went to Gill's office to meet the others.
Gil Stade
So Gil stayed as the leader of those crooks. Of course, we'll have to get evidence. Tex.
Tex Edmonds
Gold taken from the train is in his private safe at its office right now.
Gil Stade
I see. One of his men must have tried to ambush you.
Tex Edmonds
That's what I think, too. Gil was suspicious of me. I know.
Gil Stade
Better not talk anymore now. Just rest. After dark, we make camp in the grove just outside of town. Then I'll plan to move against Stade and his men.
Tex Edmonds
That evening.
Narrator
After dark, the Lone Ranger and Tottle took Tex to the cottonwood grove on the edge of town, looking to Juan, who was trying to get him to continue the search for the masked man and Indian.
Gil Stade
I haven't given up one.
Tex Edmonds
The moon's bright tonight. After the men have supper, we'll scour the hills again to try to find those got us with him. Gil is anxious to see them stop. Sheriff, it does not think it good to have him loose in the Sandy Gulch. You tell Gil my men are doing the best. We're as anxious as he is to get those groups. I thought that perhaps you were going to abandon this sort of. Abandon it, you say this county won't be safe for any man, woman or child, although his murdering pole cats are behind bars. I'll get him. Don't you worry about that. The only thing is, they're so used to dodging the law, they're downright slick about hiding their tracks. That is true, Sheriff. A couple of my deputies are as good as Injuns at Cut and Sign.
Gil Stade
I came here to talk to You, Sheriff.
Tex Edmonds
Grandpa. It is the mess, hombre. Hey, what's the meaning of this coming here with a gun?
Gil Stade
I thought you'd be glad to see me since you were looking for us a while ago.
Tex Edmonds
Yes, in brave thunder. The men had orders to shoot you on sight.
Gil Stade
That's interesting. What made you decide not to give us a chance to explain?
Tex Edmonds
One saw you and your two partners turn off the trailer day. You took us out there because we're convinced you were the gunman who held up the train.
Gil Stade
Really?
Tex Edmonds
Well, of course. They wounded mine with you. Without it, proof that you were in a gun battle today, senor. How do you know?
Gil Stade
We have a wounded man with us.
Tex Edmonds
Yes, one. You didn't say anything about that before now. Well, I did not think it important, Sheriff. But from the way one of them was riding when I saw him.
Gil Stade
The only man who knew Texas wounded is the man who shot him from ambush takes. Yes, Tex, Edmund from Newton. The sheriff's son.
Tex Edmonds
What is this anyway? One hell. Come on. Listen to this, master. I'll hit it. Hey, you shouldn't have done that, mister. But he asked for it. Reach, mister. I'm behind you. That shot got you into trouble, mister. Now we'll help.
Gil Stade
My friend at the window has a deputy covered, Sheriff.
Tex Edmonds
With the Indian and me ready to shoot. You can't get away with this.
Gil Stade
That Indian's name is Tonto. There beside him you'll see my horse, a white stallion called Silver.
Tex Edmonds
That doesn't make any difference. Why should I? Hey, those bullets in his belt look like the seal wrap. They are holy smoke, Tonto. Silver bullets of silver. That master, you must be the Lone Ranger. That's right up in jeopardy. And we were going to shoot you.
Gil Stade
On sight because this fellow Juan and Gil stayed persuaded you to do so. They have good reason.
Tex Edmonds
What do you mean?
Gil Stade
Have your deputy take charge of Juan. Hold him for questioning for the time being. When he's out of the way, I'll talk to you, Sheriff.
Tex Edmonds
Sure. Put up your gun, mister. You don't need it. Take Juan back to the cell while we talk. No, no, you cannot. Come on, you. Let's get going.
Gil Stade
Now, Sheriff, I'll tell you what I've.
Narrator
Meanwhile, Gil Steed and his men had taken the loot from the train robbery to his ranch house not far from town. Later, the Lone Ranger and Toto, with the sheriff and his men moved in on Gil's office at the cafe, only to find it empty.
Tex Edmonds
Stead isn't here. We'll go look in that sea for.
Gil Stade
The evidence not as safe as in lock yet.
Tex Edmonds
No, there isn't anything in it either.
Gil Stade
Without that evidence, you can't move against him.
Tex Edmonds
Maybe he got wind of what we.
Gil Stade
Were going to do. Eh, don't see how.
Tex Edmonds
He has a ranch not far from here.
Gil Stade
I suggest we go out there right away. He may be there with the gold.
Tex Edmonds
Red, let's get going, man.
Narrator
At his ranch house, Gil stayed and the four other crooks sat around a table in the main living room. Gil was dividing the gold they'd taken from the train.
Gil Stade
Well, I'll make a pile for Juan.
Tex Edmonds
He'll be along soon. Hey, Gil, isn't it risky having those windows open while you handle that gold? Somebody might come snoop.
Gil Stade
Don't worry.
Tex Edmonds
I told Wong the cook to stand guard outside.
Gil Stade
Maybe I'll get close.
Tex Edmonds
Yeah, we'll each get more now that Tex is out of the way.
Gil Stade
Yeah.
Tex Edmonds
I found out who Tex was. The son of that sheriff we plugged.
Gil Stade
Over in Newton a while back.
Tex Edmonds
What? What do you know about. He was just a sneaking spy. Hey, Gil, what if he tells the sheriff we were the ones who held up the stage in the train? They can't do anything without proof, Dave. It's his word against ours. My word holds some weight around town. Not any more. Hey. The sheriff at the open window. I'll take care of him. The rest of you, reach the mask. Combreak. Get him. Do not shoot.
Gil Stade
My shoulder.
Tex Edmonds
An Indian at the other window. What happened along? He should have warned us. The place is surrounded, but as well give up. You already caught your guard. Come on, boys. Who be all right.
Narrator
As balloon ranger and the sheriff followed by deputies moved in. The cooks knew they were trapped. Men were at the windows ready to shoot. So there was nothing else for them to do but surrender.
Gil Stade
Sheriff, this is unlawful. You have no.
Tex Edmonds
We heard what you and your men were saying. You killed the sheriff and Newton and you held up the stage the other day. Yeah, and that gold there's a loop from the train robbery.
Gil Stade
You have evidence enough against them. Sheriff State is also the one who sent Warren out to ambush Tex Edmunds, the sheriff's son. Because Tex joined the gang in search of evidence that they killed his father. Well, he'll be glad to know the.
Tex Edmonds
Men who did shoot his dad are captured.
Gil Stade
And that they'll be hanged for murder. Tottenham will go now and tell Tex the good news. He didn't take part in the train holdup. In fact, he came to find you. But you'd left town, Joe.
Tex Edmonds
Yeah, we went hunting for the trail of those crooks. And thanks to you, we got him without much trouble.
Gil Stade
We came here to find the gunmen who were robbing and killing in this territory. We're happy we were able to help in their capture when we bring Tex into town later. We'll see you, Sheriff. Adios.
Tex Edmonds
Goodbye to you. Doggone it, Gill. If you hadn't sent Juan and me to ambush Tex, that masked man wouldn't have been mixed up in this. Tex was mighty lucky that the masked man found him. But you, Gil, you were downright unlucky when you decided to try to frame the masked man for your crime.
Gil Stade
As soon as I heard that he.
Narrator
Was in these parts, I knew we'd.
Gil Stade
Be in for trouble.
Tex Edmonds
Well, how'd you know that, Gil? Did you tangle with him once before?
Gil Stade
No.
Tex Edmonds
And how come he came after you? I'll answer that, Dave. The masked man came after you because you fellas figured you were bigger than the law. When you go on trial, you just tell the judge you were captured by the Lone Ranger. SA Sam.
Narrator
This is a feature of the Lone Ranger Incorporated, created by George W. Trendle, produced by Trendle Campbell Enterprises, directed by Fred Flowerday and edited by Fran Stryker. The part of the Lone Ranger is played by Brace Beamer.
