Matt Dillon
Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers. And that's where the U.S. marshal and the smell of gun smoke.
Chester
Gun smoke.
Matt Dillon
Starring William Conrad. The story of the violence that moved west with young America. And the story of a man who moved with it. I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful and a little lonely.
Chester
Oh, Matt.
Kitty
Oh, Matt.
Chester
Anybody here this morning? I'll be right in, Doc. All right, man. The girls grow tall in Kansas. Poor Maddie. So busy. The girls grow tall.
Matt Dillon
That's a poor way to start the day, Doc.
Chester
And what's a poor way to getting
Matt Dillon
up in the morning?
Chester
Well, I'm not going to talk to you. Where's Chester? I'd rather talk to him now.
Matt Dillon
He's due back anytime now.
Chester
He's due back?
Matt Dillon
He took a prisoner over to Wichita a couple of days ago.
Chester
Oh, doggone it, if I'd have known that, I'd have gone with him.
Matt Dillon
Oh, what for?
Chester
Oh, just to get out of Dodge for a while.
Matt Dillon
Well, you've been out of Dodge for the last two days.
Chester
Oh, yes. Delivering a baby in a mud dugout isn't exactly what I was thinking about.
Matt Dillon
Man, I know what you were thinking about.
Chester
Morning, Mr. Doug.
Matt Dillon
You're back, Chester.
Chester
How was Wichita, Chester? A big town, Doc. Real big. But it wasn't there long. The Santa Fe going east got there at noon. The next one coming back here left at 2:00'. Clock.
Matt Dillon
Well, you could have stayed another day, you know.
Kitty
Evans.
Matt Dillon
Yes?
Chester
Why didn't. Oh, how often does a man get a chance to have a little fun? Well, I would have, but the sheriff there had some news he wanted me to tell Mr. Dun now.
Matt Dillon
Some news?
Chester
Yeah, it's about the Carp brothers. And the sheriff said he heard they was headed this way.
Matt Dillon
I didn't even know the Car brothers were in Kansas. I thought they worked at the Kota
Chester
territory bank robbers, aren't they, Matt?
Matt Dillon
So I've heard, Doc. But nobody's caught him at it yet.
Chester
Well, we'll catch them if they come to Dodge.
Matt Dillon
Maybe they could be here right now.
Chester
How Come.
Matt Dillon
The sheriff didn't send me a telegram, Chester. It'd been a little faster.
Chester
Well, I don't know, Bai Jing. I didn't think to ask him.
Matt Dillon
I'm gonna go down to the bank. I'll be back directly. Good morning, Kitty.
Kitty
Oh, hello, Matt.
Matt Dillon
You're up early this morning.
Kitty
I went to bed early last night.
Matt Dillon
Oh, where you headed?
Kitty
Delmonico's. I heard they got some fresh eggs in.
Matt Dillon
You're spoiled, but I'll go with you if you like.
Kitty
I like it fine, miss.
Matt Dillon
Well, I gotta see Mr. Bodkin at the bank here first. Why don't you go on ahead and I'll join you, huh?
Kitty
Well, how long will you be?
Matt Dillon
Oh, just a couple of minutes.
Kitty
Oh, well, then I'll wait in the bank for you. Okay, but if you're longer than a couple of minutes, you can find me the restaurant. I'm feeling pretty healthy this morning.
Matt Dillon
You ought to go to bed early every night.
Kitty
If I did, I couldn't afford breakfast. The place is deserted. You must be the only people up in Dodge, except for the cashier. Maybe you ought to wait till after breakfast, Matt.
Matt Dillon
No, Kitty, I'm afraid this business has waited too long as it is. Come in.
Chester
Well, Marshall Dillon.
Joe Karp
Come in.
Chester
Come in.
Matt Dillon
Morning, Mr. Bodkin. You come to deposit money, Marshal, or to borrow some?
Joe Karp
Neither.
Matt Dillon
I came to protect it.
Chester
What?
Matt Dillon
Mr. Bogkin, did you ever hear of the Karp brothers?
Joe Karp
No, Marshall, I don't believe I have.
Matt Dillon
Well, they've never been around Dodge. All I know is that they're brothers. And the older ones now name is Joe.
Chester
Why are you telling me this, Marshall?
Matt Dillon
I've heard they're headed for Dodge. And I've also heard that they're bank robbers.
Chester
Bank robbers?
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
Well, what do you plan to do?
Matt Dillon
Well, I can't hire deputies until after a crime's been committed, Mr. Bodkin. But if you'd like to, it might be a good idea to let a half a dozen of them wolf around
Joe Karp
here for a while. Certainly.
Matt Dillon
Certainly, Marshal.
Chester
I don't mind.
Matt Dillon
Little expense. What's that? It's them.
Chester
Now, where's my gun?
Joe Karp
Don't shoot or we kill a woman.
Matt Dillon
We're not shooting.
Chester
It killed the cashier.
Joe Karp
Hank, get around there and start filling that sack.
Chester
Okay.
Joe Karp
All right, lady, you walk in front of me. Either one of you try something, she dies.
Matt Dillon
He's coming his way, Marshal. Shoot him. Don't be a fool. Kelly's in the way. And besides, he's got a gun on her back.
Chester
They're Robbing my bank.
Matt Dillon
Shut up.
Joe Karp
Yeah, well, I'll be. I caught the marshal herself. Or I will have, as soon as I get his gun. Don't move.
Matt Dillon
No, I'm not moving.
Joe Karp
That is the first time I ever disarmed a lawman. Feels good.
Matt Dillon
Joe Karp.
Joe Karp
How'd you know my name?
Matt Dillon
Well, I heard you were headed this way, Karp, but I didn't hear it in time.
Joe Karp
You sure didn't, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
That's your brother you came in with.
Joe Karp
What difference does it make?
Matt Dillon
Look, take your money, Carp. Take it. And I'll ride out with you. Nobody will bother you.
Kitty
No, Matt.
Matt Dillon
Shut up, Kitty.
Chester
Ooh.
Joe Karp
Ooh, I see.
Matt Dillon
Nobody will shoot at you if I'm along.
Joe Karp
Not while we're in Dodge, maybe, but we'd be followed.
Matt Dillon
All right, then take me with you as far as you like.
Chester
No.
Joe Karp
No, Marshall. We'd be followed anyway. I got a better idea. We're taking her. Kitty, don't do it. Of course I'll do it. First sign I see we're being chased. Whoever it is, is gonna find Kitty laying right in the trail, fresh killed. And if you don't think I'll do it, I'll tell you something. First person I ever killed was a woman. So don't let nobody follow us.
Matt Dillon
Nobody else will follow you. I promise you that.
Joe Karp
I hate to lose such a pretty girl, Matt.
Kitty
It's all right.
Matt Dillon
Sure. Come on, Joe.
Chester
Let's get.
Joe Karp
You go in that office and sit down. Marshall. Hank's got the money ready, and we're leaving.
Matt Dillon
So long, Kitty.
Joe Karp
So long, Marshall. If I. If I do shoot Kitty, I promise you one thing. What? I'll do it with your gun.
Chester
Mr. Jones.
Matt Dillon
Yeah? What, Chester?
Chester
You reckon they'll give her any breakfast?
Matt Dillon
I don't know, Chester.
Chester
Oh, dear. People don't need much food, Chester. They can go for days without any at all. I know that, Doc, but. Well, Miss Kitty just ain't used to it. It's water people need. And they'll have water they will if they took any with them. It's mighty dry out on the prairie this time of year. Oh, it's not that dry. Any fool can find water somewhere. Sure he can. If he pollard a buffalo herd long enough. A week, maybe. There's other ways. Just like what? Do you ever hear of a divining rod? Oh, what's outlaws doing with divining? I wasn't talking about outlaws. Well, what was?
Matt Dillon
I was talking.
Chester
Hannah. Man talking.
Matt Dillon
Chester. Chester.
Chester
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
I guess we've waited long enough. They must have covered Three or four miles by now, huh?
Chester
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
Everything ready?
Chester
Everything I could think of, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
Let's get going, then.
Chester
Good luck, Mac.
Matt Dillon
Oh, thanks, Doug. Keep an eye on things, huh? Maybe a long time before we get back. From the bank window, I'd watch the Carp brothers ride north on a Dodge. So Chester and I started in the same direction on the other side of the Arkansas. We picked up their trail and followed it easily all morning. But we were careful to stay far behind them and out of sight. Although we probably could have run them down in a few hours. That was the hardest part of it. Forcing ourselves to hold back and go slow.
Chester
Mr. Dillon, you think Tarp would really do it?
Matt Dillon
Do what, Chester?
Joe Karp
You know.
Chester
Do you?
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Joe Karp
Oh, my God.
Matt Dillon
Chester.
Chester
Yeah?
Matt Dillon
Look up ahead there on the ground.
Chester
What you doing?
Matt Dillon
Let's see who it is.
Chester
It's a man, Mr. Dillon. Must be some cowboy.
Matt Dillon
He's been shot. Bring your water packet?
Chester
Yes.
Matt Dillon
He's still breathing.
Kitty
Yeah.
Matt Dillon
Let me have that. You want a drink? You thirsty?
Joe Karp
Drink some water. Here. Who are you?
Matt Dillon
Marshall Dullen from Dodge. Tell me what happened, Marshall.
Joe Karp
And I was right.
Matt Dillon
Right?
Joe Karp
Them two men and that girl.
Chester
Hold my head up.
Matt Dillon
Is that better?
Joe Karp
Full of blood, Marshall. They hurt me bad.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Joe Karp
My knees bleed.
Matt Dillon
What happened?
Joe Karp
Them two men, Marshall. You're after them, Mitchell.
Matt Dillon
I'm after them.
Joe Karp
I seen them and I rode up. And then I asked them who they was. They didn't like that.
Matt Dillon
No.
Joe Karp
I knew something was wrong, that girl and all, but I ain't no gunman. They shot me right out of my saddle. Both of them, at once.
Matt Dillon
We'll get them blamed, if that's any help to you.
Joe Karp
It don't matter now, but that girl shouldn't be with him.
Matt Dillon
Could you hear them? Did they say anything?
Joe Karp
Something about a cabin.
Matt Dillon
A cabin? Look, Blaine, my partner here, Chester, he'll stay with you.
Chester
Sure, I will. I'll take care of you, Blaine.
Joe Karp
Thanks. Won't do no good. You better go help catch him from it.
Matt Dillon
I'll handle him. Take whatever you want off my saddle, Chester. And get a fire going. Here, huh?
Chester
Yes.
Matt Dillon
You're gonna be fine, Blade. So on. I rode ahead, tracking slowly for a couple of hours. And then Chester caught up with me. He looked at me for a moment, and then, without saying a word, we continued on the trail across the prairie. We traveled in silence until dark. And then we saw a cabin. I couldn't chance going up to it, so we unsaddled and turned our horses loose and crept into a little draw about a hundred yards Away and got down and waited. We waited all night. Dawn came and the sun, hot as ever.
Chester
Ain't never coming out of that cabin, Ms. Field.
Matt Dillon
Sooner or later. Chester, look.
Chester
They got a fire going now. Smoke coming out of the chimney. Breakfast. I am so hungry.
Matt Dillon
Well, the Manka got along without the food, Chester, like Doc said.
Chester
Well, at least Miss Kitty's gonna get something to eat.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
Mr. Dillon, what in the world are we gonna do?
Matt Dillon
Right now, there's nothing we can do but sit here and wait and keep quiet. You know what'll happen if they find out we're out here.
Chester
I know, but I ain't thinking about it.
Matt Dillon
You better get back down. I'll stay up here where I can watch.
Chester
Yeah, but they can see you, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
No, I got a little bunch of buffalo grass in front of me. It's enough.
Chester
Sure he's getting hot.
Matt Dillon
Just be sure and keep your voice low.
Chester
I will. You know, if it wasn't for Sam in the cabin, it'd be awful peaceful out here, wouldn't it?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, it would.
Chester
Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
What?
Chester
Rattlesnake. She's behind you on top of the hole, about five foot.
Matt Dillon
Back your head, Chester. Whatever you do, don't move.
Chester
He's a pretty big one. Maybe three and a half, four foot.
Matt Dillon
Look, how far are you from him?
Chester
Far enough, unless he uncoils, moves up.
Matt Dillon
All right. Just keep very still. He may go away.
Chester
He ain't about to go away. Did you just move my hand? Just a little.
Matt Dillon
Well, don't do it again, Mr. Dillon.
Chester
He's stretching out. He's moving. What?
Matt Dillon
Which way?
Chester
Toward you.
Matt Dillon
Steady now.
Chester
He stopped. He's calling again.
Matt Dillon
Chester.
Chester
Yeah?
Matt Dillon
If that snake strikes at me, don't yell. They'll hear you at the cabin. Just start thinking about it. Now, if he strikes, you close your eyes and stop breathing. Do you hear me?
Chester
Well, I'll try. Well, you do it.
Matt Dillon
You understand?
Chester
Yes, sir. He's looking at me again.
Matt Dillon
You move, Chester. You must have.
Chester
I got my rifle aimed at you.
Matt Dillon
Will you stop it? Will you get your finger off that trigger right now?
Chester
Well, I can't sit here and just watch that rat.
Matt Dillon
If you shoot, Kitty, you'll die. Don't you know that?
Chester
I didn't move, Mr. Dillon. Honestly didn't.
Matt Dillon
Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I got an idea.
Joe Karp
What,
Matt Dillon
Chester? You chewing?
Chester
What?
Matt Dillon
Chewing.
Chester
Chewing. Hold it back.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Chester
No, sir, but I got a fairly fresh quid in my shirt pocket.
Matt Dillon
Okay, we'll chance it. Get that quid into your mouth, but do it slow. Slow and as steady as you can manage it. Once you start moving your hand, don't stop, you understand? All right, go ahead.
Chester
Okay. I already got fingers in my pocket. There it is.
Matt Dillon
Slow and steady now.
Chester
I'm trying here in the mouth now.
Matt Dillon
All right, now juice it up, huh? Get a big mouthful.
Chester
I am.
Matt Dillon
All right, Chester, I've heard you brag about how good you can spit. Can you hit that rattler from there?
Chester
Maybe.
Matt Dillon
Okay, do it.
Chester
But I only got one shot. I can't make it. I just can't do it.
Matt Dillon
Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Chester, you got a mouthful?
Chester
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
All right, take your time. Now move and make him look at you and then you sputter him right in the eyes. Okay, Go ahead.
Chester
Snake. Hey, Snake, look. I got him, Mr. Dillon. I got him. He's leaving. There he goes. He's gone. It worked. Well, they can't stay in that cabin forever, Mr. Dillon. They'll die of the heat cooped up in there.
Matt Dillon
It's only about 10 o', clock, Chester.
Chester
Oh, my. I hope they gave Miss Kitty some breakfast. Chester, look.
Matt Dillon
The door's open.
Chester
Are they coming out?
Matt Dillon
Get your rifle. Take it easy now.
Chester
It's Miss Kitty.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Joe Carp's behind her and there's his brother.
Chester
They're all outside now. What are we gonna do?
Matt Dillon
We're gonna have to kill em, Chester.
Chester
You mean just shoot em down from here? Cold blooded.
Matt Dillon
Well, how would you want to do it?
Chester
I'm ready, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
All right, then. Take the one on your side. I'll take Joe.
Chester
Miss Kitty's standing awful close to him.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, I know she is. When I say hold your breath, you do it. Then you count to yourself, 1, 2, 3, and then fire.
Chester
I'm safe.
Matt Dillon
All right, hold your breath. All right, come on, let's go. Chester. Kitty, get back inside.
Chester
Joe carp's still alive. Mr. Dilly's reaching for his gun.
Matt Dillon
Come on.
Chester
They're dead. They're both dead now.
Matt Dillon
Okay. Kitty. Are you all right? Kitty?
Kitty
Good to see you, Matt. You too, Chester.
Matt Dillon
I said, are you all right?
Kitty
Shot him down like dogs, didn't you?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, you bet we did.
Kitty
Thank you, Matt. Come on.
Matt Dillon
Here.
Chester
She painted, Mr. Dylan. It's a good thing you caught her.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. I'll carry her inside, Chester. Come on, we'll get some breakfast going. They probably didn't feed her after all.
