Foreign welcome to the Old Time Radio Westerns. I'm your host, Andrew Rines. And let's get into this episode. This episode is going to be Lightning Gem, originally aired in 1952. And the title of this episode is going to be Lightning Gem Snares a Hawk. It. And now for the Thrilling Adventures of Lightning Jim. The famous United States marshal is on his way to the mining territory near Dos Pesos, New Mexico. Whitey has already been in that section for a month, working secretly in an attempt to discover the gang responsible for a series of mine shipment robberies. He has written Lightning Jim to come to the Silver Load mine where he's located, saying that he believes he has a leader to the guilty party. And as the famous lawman lopes along the trail, he suddenly hears the sound of shots mingled with Indian war cries. You hear that thunder? Sounds like an Indian raid of some kind. Let's go, Thunder. Dashing toward the sound, he pops. Arrives to see a running fight between a lone white man and a small band of Indians. Drawing his guns, Lightning Jim goes to the rescue. Come on, Thunder. This fight, folks. Fight this way. Come on, you maze. The red skin. Let's see our confidence, the two of us. Yeah, we better horse painters. You only can run. Come on, let's charge him. And you've got plenty of nerves. And we're good. Here we come. Let it go. Well, there they go. Looks like they don't care so much for the taste of hot lead, huh? Don't look like that was bothering them anyway. Took you to come along and send them scattered for cover. I'm Bill Warren, pardoning the Silver Lode mine. And I'm plenty in your debt, stranger that know you Warren. Me? Well, seeing as how it just come up from the panhandle, I reckon that's as good a name as any. It's plenty good enough for me. Panhandle. I ain't one for nosing into other people's business. Got any idea why them Indians were going to Warpath Warren? No, I ain't. But maybe they're part of that renegade band that's been robbing plenty of mine shipments in these parts. That sounds likely. When they once get off the reservation, they don't draw no line. Maybe wolf paws. Man, they wonder if that one over there is dead. Teddy Boy. Looks like it might be some life in him. That's so. I'm gonna question him. Nope, he's dead all right. Say, Juan. Say, this ain't no Indian one. No, it's a white man. Just rigged up to look like one. Yeah. Then that means Daddy Paint thrown him. Rubs right off. It's been white man that's been doing these mine robberies. You're right about them being part of the same gang. Yes. But you don't know for sure. Well, nothing we can do for this one. Might as well be getting on. Yes. Under. Come on. Hey, look, Panhandle. I don't know where you're headed for. But I sure take it as a mighty big favor if you'd accept the hospitality of the Silver Load for a day or two. Well, Warren, it don't sound like a bad idea. Thanks. The figure on setting around here for a felon. Give me a chance to get my bear. Good, good. And let's get going. Come on, boy. Come on. Contact. While Warren and Lightning Jim are approaching the Silver Load mine. We find Al Brady, the other partner, in the mine office talking to Sunset, the Mexican foreman. You fixed everything up, huh? Sanchez, dear amigo, your partner, Senor Warren, he will not bother us again. The Indians, they take care of everything. They meet him this afternoon as he arrived back from those space horses. Then they go to Black Mountain camp and wait for us. Ah, good. He's a gettin at a point where he'd be in our way plenty. Yeah. That is the way I feed you. We meet the rest of the men at the camp tonight, Noel. Ain't no reason for sticking around here no longer. The Silver Load's just about worked out. And we got plenty of loot from them mine robberies. We're still up to take connection. Vamos. You know, amigo, you are one smart hombre. The way you feed things to rob the shipments from your own man. Also, there is one fine piece of work. That way no one suspect that Alfred, a partner in the Silver Load. Is also Hawkberry, the outlaw who has been robbing the man. What'd I tell you about calling me Hawk before someone hates him. Puts two and two together. A sweet tour. Boy was around when you did it the other day. That one. It's so dumb to put anything together. But there's no need for you to worry. Well, maybe not. I sure hate to see anything go wrong. Now I don't like. Who's that coming up? And see? This is two horsemen, amigo. One is a stranger, but the other. But the mirror. Now what is it, Sanchez? What do you see? Look. It is a ghost. The ghost of Bill Warren. A ghost? You crazy fool. There ain't no such thing. Yeah? Let me look. Bite under that is one thought you Said you had him taken care of. But I did. The man, they want to kill him like I told you. Ah, look. He thinks they slipped up someways. He's alive and pulling up in front of the office right now. But we cannot have him around when we clear out of. I know all about that. I'll have to figure something out. You stay here. See you. Well, howdy, Bill. Howdy. Hell, yeah. I want you to meet a hom that saved my life today. Panhandle, this here's Al Brady, my partner. Howdy, Panhandle. Howdy. That kind of an introduction from Bill there is sure all I need to make you plenty welcome. Come on in the office and send me the honor. Glad to, Brady. Just soon as I take care of my horse. Oh, you don't have to trouble, Panhandle. Here comes Swede. He'll handle him for you. Reckon not, Warren. I broke that horse myself. I don't let nobody else touch him. Hey, Swede. Sure, Mr. Boris. Take my pinto into the saber rubbing down and so Panhan will hear us all for his horse. Give him anything he needs. Oh, I do that. You come along with me, mister. I take you there. Help him so come along now. Come along now. That Soros a fine horse you got there, mister. I bet you keep plenty fast. You're right there. Fastest horse ever saw. What is the Cremata, too. Oh, you can tell that by a size? Sort of. You know, someday I'm going to have me a horse like that. Like that. I have to see Bill. You can take your store right there. That's fine, Sweden. Yeah. Boys, here you go. Kind of a gun. I'm so glad to see you wondering. Let me get that. See how come you seen him with Bill? Boy, that was just a lucky break. Well, tell you about it later. Learned anything about these mine robberies by driving that long term? Yeah. This salad Brady. His real name is Hawk Brady. You mean the Texas outlaw and sense is the Mexican foreman. He's called Mervyn. What about Juan? You with him, too? I don't think so. Then he discovered his mind and that Brady talking into letting him put up the money. The verse and boy seems like a nice father. Pinto will get the saddle and boy. Yes. Got anything definite sign Brady up with him? Robbery? Well, only that any time, Mr. Robbery. Yeah. Me again from the mine. And don't come back here for a long time. That sounds ties up doing it. Hey, Thunder, gladiator seas for you. Yeah. What you think we ought to do? Right. I'll talk to Juan. Get him to work with us. Then we can hold it. It's your very coffee. Yeah. There you be, boy. Ready of feeding water. Thanks for the help, sweet. Oh, well, that's just my job, mister. Glad to help you and your panhandle. They are waiting for you at the cabin Suffolk time here. Is that so? Thanks. Be right along. Sweep that horse right, Swede. Oh, don't you worry about the king. I take chance to get carry him. You bit. All right. You signal me to stay here while they're going in these for a very good reason, Amigo. I know who this fellow the penal panhandle really is. Huh? What do you mean who he really is? This panhandle happens to be Lightning, Jim. Lightning. Gim. You're crazy. But no, I am not. I tell him about that orchid. Is there is no other o in the world like that one. I have seen him before in Mexico. And how come you didn't see the marshal too? When I learned who this animal belonged to another wait to see the owner. That was enough for me. And there is one other king also. Yeah? What's that? He's Lightning Gym. He has the deputy a tower Swedish omer, you mean. I think that's me and Eagle weak. He must be watch the last and the deputy answers. If you are right, we gotta get rid of them quick before it's too late. And Warren also. Do not forget about him. Yeah, Warren too. They just killing them ain't enough. We gotta put them somewhere where they won't be found or we can get out of this country. I don't know if I say them at our heels. What about the mine, amigo? Did you think of that? What do you mean, Santa? What's the mine got to do with it? Suppose the three of them were left in the mine and the entrance you close off and use dynamite. That would do it. No, my Thunderson, I think you're right. And if we can get it over with tonight, the rest of our plans will go through without a hitch. Hey, you think you can get the dynamite charger placed and ready while we're eating? It will be easy to do. Then get to it. I'll see that Juan takes the marshal into the mine after supper and that the Swede goes in after him. And once they're all inside, our worries will be over. Well, here we are in the mine legend. Yeah, well, my partner's nothing but a no good outlaw in se. That's right, Juan. He's half braided. And he's only using the silver load to cover up his other activities. Dirty Kyle trying to have me killed today. I'm going right back up there and get things settled for a long while. He ain't going to get in the way of doing that. Got to get Pooh. Gotta find out where he's been hiding the loose. When that's done, I'll take cash in and sound you. I suppose you're right, Lycan. But I'd sure like to handle this myself. Hey, why do you suppose he was so anxious for it to come down here in the mine? Maybe he's planning something right now. I reckon he is. But we ain't got nothing to worry about. The deputy, Whitey Lawson, will see that he don't get away while we're down here. That's two debts I owe you now, Marshall. First for saving my life and now for letting me know about Brady Someday I want. What? Who's that? Who's down here? What you doing down here? Oh, well, you told V and whoever. Sure, I told him. What you doing down here wrong? No. But didn't you tell Brady? Yeah, you wanted to see me. I didn't celebrating nothing. But he told me to come down here. Right to me. He said that Pen. He invited me to do something for you didn't tell Brady sp Whitey Daniel, did you on? No, no, I had nothing to do with it. And it's a trick of sometime. Come on, we got to get back to the service before it's too late. What do you think? Don't know, buddy. You all right? Tell me your own I can. What about you, Juan? I'm all right. Legend Frankie just stole our mark on it. Yeah. Dynamite is the entrance to the mine and we can't get out. It looks like we may not be down here permanent. So Hawk Brady's scheme did work. Lightning Jim, Whitey Lawson and Bill Warren are trapped in the Silver load mine. And Brady and Sanchez are free to ride the Black Mountain camp and get away with her spoils. The thrilling second part of the Adventures of Lightning Gym will follow immediately. And now for part two of Lightning Jim Snares a Hawk. We find the famous marshal, his deputy and Warren in the light of a flickering lamp examining the tons of earth and rock that blocked their exit from the mine. How does it look for you, Lightning? You think there's any chance of cutting through there? They've not want any other exit to this mine, Mr. Noah. There is. I never heard of it. Well, let's start looking through it anyway. Take a lamp and will you wet it to all your breath. Well, they found out some way who we are. Whitey sure worked it for all three of us would be brought down here. Yes, but how could they have found out? What bothers me is that they did find out. And that's why we're down here. Let's ring up this old cross that way. Oh, I'm ready, Lightning, for this. Sure got the king of Piston now. Yeah. Sure been bad medicine for you, Lightning. Ever since you ran into me, you've been heading right smack into trouble. And now you're going to end up like this. I ain't ended up yet. Don't worry. Still living. And as long as we are, we got a chance. Jealous? You're right, Lightning. We don't give up. Until we got to let us. Cross current to Lightning. No exit. Might as well come back. All right. Lead the way back. Hey, wait a minute. What is it, Lightning? You feel anything more? You're only me. No, I can't say they do. Well, I do. I feel a draft of cold air. And that means there's an opening to the outside somewhere around here. Why? To hold that lantern up higher. We'll look around. Oh, no. You miss a minute. Yes. Well, I don't see anything new. That air ain't coming from that side of the wall. Well, then try the other side. I'll look back here where the broadcut is. Yeah, this wally seems to be plenty solid. Like him. Maybe there's enough. Yeah. What is it? I don't see nothing that looks like an exit. There. See that picture of them rocks? Yeah. That's where the airs come from. So? But we've got to give this stair to us. That's too small for a man to get to. Yeah, well, it won't be when we get finished with it. Let's round up some of them fixing shovels I saw back there in the tunnel. That Fisher leads to the outside. And we're going to work our way through that way. Just a bit more. I don't know, buddy. You seem to be doing quite well with that. There's Stor, but I ain't cut off for this kind of work. Hold on, boys. Hold on. I think you're done. Looks like that hole's big enough for me to climb through, so I'm going to try it. Well, you're home. How you doing? Last. I'm working through, all right. Hey, try and get the leg, will you? You send out some bowling. Yeah, I'll get this from here. All right, I got it. All right. L. Here we Go one the other job, do you mean? Yeah, I'm out. All right, come on, crew. I'll give you a hand from here. Oh, that's Rory. Maybe. All right, give me your hand. And here I come. Boy. Buddy. Yeah, that was easy. Yeah. Looks like we're on the side of a hill overlooking the mine. Yeah, that's it. Right enough. Lucky for us that rock creature leads out here. What do you reckon we ought to do now, Lightning burn after Hawk and Santa? Oh, I suppose you got to. I was hoping that I could get some street tonight, but. Yes, you can. Not now, buddy. We got to get moving. We got a good start on us as it is while we was down in the mine. Yeah, but how are you going to know where they went? How are you going to follow them anyway? Maybe they took all the horses. Now the moon's bright enough to trail them by. The horses are gone. We just have to walk, that's all. Oh, it's just anything I heard worse than swinging a pickaxe. Get up walking. But if I have to, I have to. Well, come on fellas, let's go. Closer to 15 or could be just about the end of the trail according to Juan. Yeah, that's right. Their tracks led toward this canyon near the only thing up here is an old prospector's cabin called Black Mountain Camp. Must be hauling out up there. Be plenty careful just up ahead. Yeah, they're the ones. Better be careful. We got a score with them now. I got to get from the back. Oh, yes. Until I pay them for a wear and tear on my feet. Oh, good. You know, in a minute give him a coyote call he won't get right now. Yeah, sorry. Stumbled like that, right? Yeah, but we learned something from that stumble fight. You know, they're up there, you know, they got look out the first day that means the war up again. Yeah, but we got to do something like this. It's going to be drawn for long. Then they'll be able to see the right one. This is what we'll have to do. I'm going to ask you to hold in down at this end of the canyon wall. If you try to come out this way, it's got to be at the top of here. You can depend on me for that. Buddy, you're going to climb to the top of the canyon wall and look things over. Once we're up there, we can figure out what our plan of action will be. The sooner if we see all bed, the sooner I'll get some sleep up your wedding now. That the sun's coming up. There is a canyon with a cabin at one end and one at the other. The one halfway between them that fellow work is they cut off for the men who can. That must be where that shot still come from. Yeah, I think you're right, buddy. There's eight men down there, but I don't see this radio sample must be in shot. You all in ready to meet the yesterday two back alley. See them cut loose in the back of the cabinet. Get a load of Curtis to that buddy. It's thunderstorm a horse. Why did we got to stop them gaspers from getting away? All the talking do that like me. There's too many of them pouch in the canyon for a. I don't know that. They got to get them out of the wayside somehow. And Warren can hold one end of the canyon and we can get in the back of the cabin and stop Brady and Sandra from leaving that way you got there. How are we going to do that? Well, never said it'll be so hard, Whitey say it like way out of that cut off is through the canyon and aside to speak the time. Well, see that big boulder over yonder? Sure it. Well, if we could get it rolling down into the cur. Thank you for tuning dear. Maybe they would block off get cut off from the camp. Yeah, if it did that them skunks down there couldn't get out. Except them maybe one at a time over that rock. Oh, and that boy could take care of him. He sure could. Come on, buddy. Let's get over to it and fire. I don't think you can budge it. He's got to come it over. Why do you call him Chance? Let's get a shoulder now. Easiest practical if you want to go. Come on, buddy, get behind it. Good little back now. Hold it. All ready? I'm ready. All right, let's go. Come on. Keep open. All right. All right now one more she brings down the better. It'll be tighter than a drum. The only way out north by climbing over them rocks. Yeah, but we try that one can pick them off one by one. This end is shut off now. We got to get back in that cabin. Mad hawking senses when they make a break to get away. No question, Sanchez, but what that landslides got them umbrellas trapped inside that cut off. They'll find it plenty tough getting out of there. You are right. What do you think we should do? Well, we can do one or two things. We can go down there and help them get out or can leave Them there and take the gold and silver. Our am I friend Then why should we worry, seor? I always find it much easier to divide by 2 than by 10. That's just what I was thinking. Come on. Sanchez and mules is packed and ready to go. Let's get moving. Okay, I'm right with you. With the mules untether while I ping the paddles on the horses. This is as good as Don Amigo. Now you along it. Sons of Satan. It's time for you to work for delivery. You know, senor. Ok, I think it Amigo. What do you do with that gun? What do you think I'm gonna do with it? Sante. But no, amigo. Why should you shoot me? Have we not been the friends, the partners we worked together for so many years? Yeah, for too many years, max. And besides, I just figured out that it's a heap easier to take everything and divide by two. No, no, no. You can do this. Well, that takes care of you. Thank you. The hawk can fly alone from now on. Now to get a saddle on that raw man's horse, and I'll be getting out of here. Ah, don't get ornery with me, you black hellion. Stand still. Let me get this shot around me, will you? Well, maybe a taste of this quirt over your nose will taste the bat hawked and fast. Dr. Lightning Jim. How'd you get here? No matter how your game's played out, don't reach for your gun. You ain't gonna take me alive yet. But I am going to take you alive. That's why I only shot the gun out of your hand. Want to listen to reason now, Hawkins? All right, you got me now. What are you going to do now? Better get over there and tie him up. Oh, I shall. Come here. Come on, Brady. I'll carry you up with your own rope. All right. Sweet. I give up. Give me that. Oh, no, you don't. Get out of the way, buddy. Is it? Why you won't like it when I you keep your private because of the Brady said he couldn't get any sleep last night, but now that it's almost over, the only one sleeping is Brady himself.
