Gunsmoke Brought to you by Chesterfield Chesterfield packs more pleasure because it's more perfectly packed thanks to Accuray. They satisfy the most around Dodge City and in the territory on West. There's just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers, and that's with a U.S. marshal and the smell of gun Smoke. Gun Smoke Starring William Conrad. The transcribed story of the violence that moved west with young America and the story of a man who moved with it.
Matt Dillon
I'm that man. Matt Dillon United States Marshal. The first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful and a little lonely.
Ben Tipple
Hey, Tipple, mow that horse your an oar so I can get mine in there. This hitch rack's pretty crowded, Paris. Can't you tie up someplace else? I said move him over here. Now don't do that. No. If you hit my horse again, I'll shoot you. Paris, you won't do nothing. What's the matter with you, you drunk? You gotta complain about something, Tip. Yeah, Paris, I got a complaint. Go ahead, Tip, while I'm waiting.
Matt Dillon
All right, hold it there you men.
Joe Spangler
You stay out of this, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Not likely.
Ben Tipple
Now looky here, Marshall. I know you're a friend of Tipples, but I don't know as I like your protecting him this hard.
Matt Dillon
I'm not protecting anybody, Paris. I'm stopping a gunfight. Now you get moving.
Ben Tipple
I'll meet you anytime, Paris.
Matt Dillon
You shut up.
Ben Tipple
We'll meet right enough when you ain't got your nursemaid around. Why'd you stop it, Matt? He had it coming to him.
Matt Dillon
You're pretty hot tempered, aren't you, Ben?
Ben Tipple
Did you see what he done?
Matt Dillon
That's no reason to shoot a man and you know it.
Ben Tipple
An ordinary man know. But that Paris has been looking for trouble for a long time.
Matt Dillon
I know what he's like. But you keep away from him, Ben.
Ben Tipple
It's bound to happen, Matt, sooner or later. And I don't hide from no man. You know me well enough for this. Doggone old river is awful high for this time of year, ain't it, Mr. Dunn?
Matt Dillon
I must have been having some big rains up in Colorado.
Ben Tipple
Oh, now that's where I'd like to be. Up in them tall cool mountains. Yeah, My, just think of laying on your back up there in the deep grass, drinking snow water and eating trout, listening to all them pretty birds singing away.
Matt Dillon
We'll miss you, Chester.
Ben Tipple
Oh, I ain't going nowhere.
Matt Dillon
Look on the bank there.
Ben Tipple
Some fellow fishing. He must have fell asleep.
Matt Dillon
He isn't asleep, Chester.
Ben Tipple
No, sir, I don't believe he is. What? That's Frank Parrish, Mr. Dillon.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, shot in the back.
Ben Tipple
That's terrible. There's his pull. By golly. He was sitting here fishing and somebody sneaked up and shot him. Oh, that's a mean way to die.
Matt Dillon
We'll get a wagon and carry him back to Dodge. All right, get on, Justin.
Ben Tipple
I can't see nobody.
Matt Dillon
All right, come out of there, you can't get both of us. Come out or we'll start shooting.
Andy Spangler
Don't shoot, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
I'm coming.
Ben Tipple
Well, it's only a kid. It's Andy Spangler.
Matt Dillon
Andy, what are you doing out here?
Andy Spangler
Nothing, Marshall. I was gonna go fishing, but I lost my line.
Matt Dillon
Why were you hiding in the brush, sir?
Andy Spangler
Him? I heard a shot some time ago and I come looking around, I found him laying there and I got scared when I heard you ride up, so I hid.
Matt Dillon
You didn't see anybody?
Andy Spangler
No, I didn't see nothing. Whoever did it was gone.
Ben Tipple
Oh, my goodness. Mr. Jones.
Matt Dillon
What is it, Chester?
Ben Tipple
The way Frank and Ben Tipple was carrying on, you don't suppose Ben could have did it, do you? I know he's a good friend of yours and all.
Matt Dillon
Never mind, Chester. Well, let's get back to town. Come on. Andy, you can ride behind me.

Hello, Ben.
Ben Tipple
I'm Matt.
Matt Dillon
Come in.
Ben Tipple
I was about to take a little nap now it's cooled off some.
Matt Dillon
Ben, you heard what happened to Frank Paris yesterday?
Ben Tipple
Yeah. Yeah, I heard. Well, are you asking me if I did it, Matt?
Matt Dillon
Most everybody in Dodge thinks you did.
Ben Tipple
And what do you think?
Matt Dillon
Well, I've been telling everybody I've known Ben Temple a long time and that he's hot tempered. And that Frank Paris has been prodding him every chance he had. But that Paris didn't even have his gun up. Besides, he was shot in the back.
Ben Tipple
What are people saying to that?
Matt Dillon
They're saying you're a friend of mine. They think that's why I haven't arrested you. Is it? I'd go after my own brother if I thought he murdered a man. Then.
Ben Tipple
Happened yesterday morning sometime, didn't it, Matt?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, that's right.
Ben Tipple
I got no alibi for then. I wasn't with nobody.
Matt Dillon
That's too bad. It would have helped.
Ben Tipple
I might have shot Frank Perry. Someday, Matt. But never in the back.
Matt Dillon
I know that, Ben. But until I find out who did it, you better lay low.
Ben Tipple
Just look at this place, Matt.
Matt Dillon
What's wrong, Kitty?
Andy Spangler
Well, it may be the biggest saloon.
Ben Tipple
In Dodge, but it's sure the emptiest.
Matt Dillon
Oh, you're getting greedy, Kitty.
Ben Tipple
And it's about time.
Andy Spangler
Sure.
Ben Tipple
Not getting younger.
Matt Dillon
You're going to be able to retire before you're 30.
Ben Tipple
Why not?
Matt Dillon
Well, I'm glad somebody's getting rich around here. Law sure isn't.
Ben Tipple
No, but the law keeps busy.
Matt Dillon
Huh?
Ben Tipple
Joe Spangler and his pa.
Andy Spangler
I think he's looking for you, man.
Matt Dillon
Oh.
Joe Spangler
Evening, Miss Kitty.
Ben Tipple
Evening.
Joe Spangler
I want to talk to you, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Go ahead, Spangler.
Joe Spangler
I want to know why you ain't got Ben Tipple in jail.
Matt Dillon
Frank Paris was a friend of yours, wasn't he?
Joe Spangler
That doesn't matter.
Matt Dillon
And it doesn't matter that Ben Tibble's a friend of mine. He didn't do it, Spangler.
Joe Spangler
There's a lot of people who think he did, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
You have any proof?
Joe Spangler
I'm a boy. And here I think he saw Tipple out there. And I'll get it out of him. I whipped him once already.
Matt Dillon
Look, Spangler, your boy have told me if he'd seen anybody. Why would he try to protect Ben Tipple?
Ben Tipple
Scared?
Matt Dillon
Scared of what?
Joe Spangler
You. What you might do to him if he talked.
Matt Dillon
Just a minute, Spangler.
Joe Spangler
He's gonna talk before I'm through.
Matt Dillon
You get out of here. You're making me mad.
Joe Spangler
No, I didn't aim to do that, Marshall. All I wanted is to get you to do your job before somebody has to do it for you.
Andy Spangler
Easy, Matt.
Matt Dillon
Yeah. Oughta take him apart.
Ben Tipple
That wouldn't help.
Matt Dillon
It'd make me feel better.
Andy Spangler
You'll be all right soon you find.
Ben Tipple
Out who did kill Paris.
Matt Dillon
How am I going to find that out, Kitty? With all this going on, he's as safe as a bear in a hickory tree.
Ben Tipple
Well, looks to me like you're gonna have a busy day today, man.
Matt Dillon
I am? Why, Doug?
Ben Tipple
Well, I don't know. No, now, maybe it's cuz you did so little yesterday.
Matt Dillon
Do I owe you some money or something, Doc?
Ben Tipple
Oh, no, no, no. You're all paid up. But you know, man, I've been thinking.
Matt Dillon
How much you want, Doc?
Ben Tipple
Oh, $10 to do it.
Narrator/Chesterfield Advertiser
Here you are.
Matt Dillon
Oh, well, thank you. Sure, Doc. Just pay it back by Friday.
Ben Tipple
You think I was merely asking for a loan?
Matt Dillon
You have your own way of doing things, Doctor.
Ben Tipple
So's he.
Matt Dillon
What?
Ben Tipple
Look that filthy Spangler. He's cuffing his boy around again.
Matt Dillon
I've had about enough of his ways.
Joe Spangler
I warned you, boy. I warned you. What you did.
Andy Spangler
No, don't buy it. Mean to do it.
Joe Spangler
You won't learn, will you?
Matt Dillon
All right, that's enough, Spangler.
Joe Spangler
Bye. You just get out of here, Marshall. You ain't interfering in this.
Matt Dillon
Let the boy go, Spangler.
Joe Spangler
Let him go.
Matt Dillon
I said that's enough, Andy. You stand over here. He won't hit you again.
Andy Spangler
I didn't mean to do it. I told him I didn't.
Matt Dillon
What did you do, Andy?
Andy Spangler
I lost his rifle. I borrowed it to go hunting and I fell across the river and I lost it.
Joe Spangler
I ought to kill you, Marshal.
Matt Dillon
Don't try it, Spangler. Now come on, get on your feet.
Joe Spangler
What right you got coming between the man and this boy?
Matt Dillon
None, I guess. But I took it anyway.
Joe Spangler
That kid ought to be in jail, stealing like he does.
Matt Dillon
He wasn't stealing.
Joe Spangler
It ain't none of your business, Marshall. I ain't going to talk to you about it, Andy. I'll see to you later.
Matt Dillon
You beat him again and I'll throw you in jail.
Andy Spangler
He won't beat me. Cause I ain't going home. Not ever.
Matt Dillon
Now, what'll your mother think, Andy?
Andy Spangler
I got no mother.
Matt Dillon
Oh, I'm sorry. I forgot, Annie.
Andy Spangler
And he hates me.
Matt Dillon
Look, Annie, if you things get bad, you come see me, huh? Anytime. Will you do that?
Andy Spangler
Maybe.
Matt Dillon
And don't let your PA make you say anything that isn't true. Andy, you don't have to. You understand. Now, all right. Now you just remember, you. You can come see me anytime.

Ben Tipple
What work?
Matt Dillon
Well, for the next few hours, I gotta walk around and try to make sure nobody's gonna get cheated or get too drunk or get killed.
Ben Tipple
Maybe you're right. Sometimes that kin turn into. Well, looky there. It's Andy. Now, what's he up to?
Andy Spangler
Marshall? Dylan.
Matt Dillon
Yeah, what's the trouble, Andy?
Andy Spangler
They're in that alley right back there. Come on, Murray. Come on.
Matt Dillon
Well, who's in the alley?
Andy Spangler
Paul and Ben Tipple. Pa's got him cornered.
Ben Tipple
What?
Andy Spangler
Pa's got the drop on him. He hid out in there and waited for him to come by.
Matt Dillon
But how do you know? What were you doing there?
Andy Spangler
I thought Pa was after me. But he's gonna shoot Ben Tipple. I know he is.
Matt Dillon
Well, maybe I can stop him, Andy.
Andy Spangler
I hope so, but I don't know how.
Matt Dillon
All right, let's slow down here. You wait here with Chester, Andy. I'm gonna go in there alone.
Ben Tipple
You see?
Joe Spangler
You are the new Tippoo. Might as well admit it and you know it.
Ben Tipple
I wouldn't have minded shooting Frank Parrish, but not in the back. Not even him.
Joe Spangler
I guess I'm going to have to kill you.
Matt Dillon
You'll die yourself if you pull that trigger, Slangler. Marshall. Now you drop that gun.
Ben Tipple
No.
Joe Spangler
He killed Frank Paris. And I'm going to shoot him if I die for it myself.
Matt Dillon
Don't be a fool.
Ben Tipple
He's got my gun, Matt.
Matt Dillon
Just stand steady, Ben.
Andy Spangler
Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Get back. Andy.
Andy Spangler
I gotta tell you something.
Ben Tipple
He. He slipped away from me.
Andy Spangler
Mr. Dillon, it's terribly important.
Matt Dillon
Help me keep an eye on Spangler, Chester.
Ben Tipple
Yes, sir.
Matt Dillon
All right, now, what is it, Andy?
Ben Tipple
Hurry up.
Andy Spangler
Bend over. I got a whisper.
Joe Spangler
What's going on there?
Ben Tipple
Never mind. You got two men who'll shoot you now, Spangler. And you better not try nothing.
Joe Spangler
I get bloody tired of this. What's that kid doing here anyway?
Ben Tipple
Well, he didn't come here to murder nobody like his PA did.
Joe Spangler
Ben Temples, the murderer, not me.
Matt Dillon
No, he isn't. Spangler Temple didn't shoot Frank Paris.
Joe Spangler
You said that before, Marshall.
Matt Dillon
Andy did it, Andy. He just told me.
Ben Tipple
What are you saying?
Matt Dillon
It was an accident? He saw something move and he thought it was an animal, so he fired at it. I don't believe the day he took your rifle. When he found he'd shot Paris, he got scared and threw the rifle into the river. You tell him, Andy.
Andy Spangler
It's true. I was too scared to tell anybody before.
Matt Dillon
All right, you heard him, Spangler. I Put up that gun.
Ben Tipple
I don't believe him.
Joe Spangler
He's lying. You stay where you are.
Matt Dillon
Put up your gun, I said.
Joe Spangler
Not hardly.
Ben Tipple
You killed him, Matt.
Matt Dillon
He almost killed me, Ben. Andy, I. I'm sorry about your pa, but. You go with Chester now, huh?
Andy Spangler
He wasn't my pa. What? My real PA died a long time ago. My ma told me about it when she made me change my name.
Matt Dillon
Oh.
Andy Spangler
I guess that's why he never did like me much. Beat me all the time.
Matt Dillon
Yeah.
Andy Spangler
Marshall.
Matt Dillon
What, Andy?
Andy Spangler
When are you gonna hang me?
Matt Dillon
Hang you?
Andy Spangler
For shooting Mr. Parrish?
Matt Dillon
Is that what you've been thinking?
Andy Spangler
I admitted to doing it, didn't I?
Matt Dillon
It was an accident, Andy. Nobody's gonna hang you. Ben.
Ben Tipple
What?
Matt Dillon
Matt, He's a mighty brave boy. Yeah.
Ben Tipple
Yeah, he sure is. Why, he spoke up just now to save my life, thinking he'd be hung for it. Didn't he? Andy, How'd you like to come home with me? I got a place for a boy like you.
Andy Spangler
You mean that?
Matt Dillon
I sure do.
Andy Spangler
Marcia, you believe me? You think he means it?
Matt Dillon
Yeah, Andy. I think he means it.

This episode features a digitally restored broadcast of the classic radio western Gunsmoke, titled "Lost Rifle." The story revolves around the murder of Frank Paris, the suspicions cast on tough but principled Ben Tipple, and a lost rifle that gradually unearths the real tragedy behind the crime. Through Marshal Matt Dillon’s investigations, themes of justice, innocence, abuse, and redemption emerge in this tense, emotionally charged tale from Dodge City.
On Dodge City’s rough justice:
"I'm that man. Matt Dillon, United States Marshal. The first man they look for and the last they want to meet. It's a chancy job and it makes a man watchful and a little lonely."
— Matt Dillon’s iconic intro (06:36)
Matt’s Code of Conduct:
"I'd go after my own brother if I thought he murdered a man."
— Matt Dillon (14:27)
Childhood Pain:
"He hates me."
— Andy Spangler, discussing Joe Spangler (20:04)
The Heart of the Story:
"Why, he spoke up just now to save my life, thinking he'd be hung for it. Didn't he? Andy, How'd you like to come home with me? I got a place for a boy like you."
— Ben Tipple (26:37)
The episode’s language remains authentic to the era of Gunsmoke, with plainspoken, gritty exchanges full of unvarnished emotion and Western bravado. The digital restoration enhances ambient sound and atmosphere, making for an immersive classic radio experience.
"Lost Rifle" is a powerful episode of Gunsmoke that explores guilt, innocence, and the search for justice, set against the harsh realities of frontier life. Its climactic twist and moments of compassion offer a nuanced look at human frailty, the consequences of violence, and the hope of redemption. Fans of classic Westerns will find this a standout episode for both its storytelling and heartfelt performances.
