In the warm summer weather, Sergeant Preston was traveling on horseback with his great dog Yukon King running alongside. They were on the trail several miles from the town of Stewart when the sergeant noticed a thin stream of smoke rising from a cabin ahead. The cabin belonged to a friend of Preston's, a wealthy prospector named John Larue. As the policeman watched, the smoke became more dense. It darkened and rose ominously against the sky.
