Many times in the course of his colorful career as the sworn enemy of lawlessness and crime in the Old west, the famous hard riding Cisco Kid was in danger of his life. But never was he in greater peril. And when he fell into the hands of Jesse Post and Pierre du Lac, a murderous outlaw down from the north. Ruthless killers and drivers of the Murder Wagon. As our story opens, Post and Pierre are driving their big freight wagon west towards an isolated ranch house outside the town of Tumbleweed Creek. Blue Gas. Yes, that ranch ahead. They look very good. Yeah, well kept. Looks like they might have something of value in the way of money Furniture and belong? We'll find out soon. Say. You bet we will, Pierre. It'll take just about one more load of goods to fill up this here wagon. Then we sell the load further on, monsieur. That's right. And what with all the people coming west and settling, there's plenty of demand for good furniture. We're making money, Pierre. And we have the fine sport too. You mean killing the owners? We? Then we throw their bodies into the house, Drag the mat. Who will know? Oh, you're a bloodthirsty maverick. But that's the only way to do it. Kill them off so they won't talk. Hey, there's a man and woman out front of that house. Oh, Pierre. Take the rifle. Go ahead. Get em both. Soon as I stop. Whoa, whoa. Just you 2 Live here, mister? Yep. Just me and my wife. Light and come in, won't you? Dunno. But what we will. All right, Pierre. Hey, got em both. Pierre. Pierre. Never miss, mon ami. Cut some of the branches of them trees, Pierre, and make a drag so we can cover our tracks when we leave. I'll go in the house and start looking for valuables and money. Oh, the ring on the lady's finger. J. The lovely ring. All right, all right. Take it. It will go on the little finger of Pierre. Get going. We got work to do. Slow down, loco. Which trail go to Tumbleweed Creek? Cisco. Which trail? Huh? Well, I am not sure, Pancho. No, but I think it is this one we are on. Ah, there's a freight wagon coming toward us. You will ask the driver. Come on up. Diablo. Go ask the driver. Marshal asked us to come this way, Cisco. See, amigo, the United States Territorial Marshal asked us to look into the matter of all these fires. The houses burn down, Noah. And the owners burn with them. There have been five such fires of late, Bancho, over a distance of some 200 miles. And every one of them on a direct route west. It's bad. He's very bad. It's worse because no signs are left but those who are guilty. Shells not mine. If he look into the Pharisees coat. Well, some of them will not others. William. Hoo hoo. Nia. Ho. Buenos, dear signores. Howdy. Tell me, are we on the right trail to the town of Tumbleweed Creek? No, we're heading for Tumbleweed Creek. Now, judging from the direction you hombres are riding, you're sure to cut across country about two miles west. We saw no trail there, but gracias, senor. Why don't you let us turn our horses around and. Hey, wait, wait. What? What? Look, there's smoke in the sky back there. A lot of smoke, Cisco. Yeah, we come past it a little while ago. We'd have stopped and helped, but the house was too far gone. Nevertheless, we will ride back and have a look up. Diablo. Come on, have a look. I could have killed them both. Easy, Jay. We ain't killing everybody we meet. But I can't help wondering what them hombres are doing. Who they are. Mighty fancy gear the big one had. But they will find nothing at the fire. No. But just the same, we'll keep our eyes open. I don't like the way the big one looked this outfit over. Maybe we better not stop at the cafe in Tumbleweed Creek. But of course we will stop, monsieur. We are going to celebrate and then drive on. Oh, yeah. I guess there's no danger. Come on, get out. Get out there. Get out. It's Joe Hobbs play sheriff. Yep. Sure enough, it is, Deputy. Burned flat down to the ground. Too bad Joe and his wife go to town today. I don't know, Sheriff. They don't generally go except on a Saturday. Barn's burned down too. That's. There's a couple riders coming now. Maybe it's Joe and his wife. No, they neither. Say, who are those two average sheriffs? Nobody I ever saw before. What is this? Are you Sheriff? Howdy. Who might you two be, stranger? Well, I am known as the Cisco Kid. And this is me, Compagnero Pancho. Mi componero. Cisco. Cisco Kid, huh? I've heard of you so fat, sheriff. And it ain't all been good either. Would you talk to Deputy? I'm talking to you, hombre. Panchino. Hombre. Hombre. Eto. Pancho. Pancho, hombre. May I have a word with you alone, senor Sheriff? Yeah, I guess so. Sir. You will know why Pancho and I are in your county, Sheriff. I will tell you. The United States Marshal asked us to investigate these fires. The United States Marshal did? See, he asked us to help you sheriffs as much as we could. He's got a nerve trying to force his authority into my county. Oh, that is not the way to look at it, senor Sheriff. That's the way I am looking at it, sir. Come here. There's two bodies in what's left of this house. No. Come over here and see. There usually are bodies in the ruins. That has been the case very long. I don't need your comments any more than I need your help. Cisco, you and your partner get out of Here. Pronto. Very well, Sheriff. Come, Pacho. Adios. It's a case of murder, too. Yeah, as far as I'm concerned. You should have arrested that Cisco Kid, Sheriff. I got no proof against him. We'll follow him, Deputy. And we'll keep following till we find out what he's up to. What are we doing now? Oh, first of all, we'll stop at this cafe and have an early supper, Chico. Fine. Till I go. Early supper? Late supper any time. Supper? No, I believe you would like to eat all the time. Oh, no, no, no. All the time. He's go most of the time. Of that I have no doubt. But Pancho mean what we do by the sheriff. You know, he not like us. Well, there's nothing we can do about him, Chico. After we got our supper, we leave the county. No, no, we will not leave, Pancho. We plan to get back out to that place before dark to look for clues. Mm. The sheriff will not let us help him. Then we will work for ourselves. Yeah, Let us take this table. Really table do with food. Hey. Good little copper. Hey. Very nice, very nice. Well, our two friends at the freight wagon are in here, Pancho. Pancho. See them conscious like that hombre with the long black hair, Cisco. I cannot say I care for his looks either. Pancho, do you see that ring he is wearing on his little finger? Yes, he's ring on the finger. That is not a man's ring, is a woman's ring. A woman's ring, Cisco, might belong to the hombre's mamacita. It might have belonged to his mother. But for a villainous looking hombre like him to be wearing a ring like that, it's very strange. What'll you have, gents? Baja. Have the steak, Erita. I will also have a steak and barn to also have a side order of another steak. What? Also a beef stew and tortillas and a big bowl of friolis. I'd sure hate to be your wife, Pancha. Got a wife? She's lucky. Who's lucky? I'll let it go. I'll just bring you all the food in the kitchen. One momento, senorita. Can you tell me the names of those two hombres at the table near the counter? I don't know who they are, but I sure do know they're pets. Especially that big dark one. He kept trying to slide these rings off my fingers. He seems to have a weakness for jewelry, Cisco. Yes. Look at him. He come this way. You make the talk about me. What is this Talk. Hey, come back here. Go on back to your table. Omri. You don't give the answer, I will draw back my foot and kick over this. Now, I'm gonna throw you out of this cafe. Since you are looking for a fight, Ombre, you will get a fight. And as for you throwing me out of this cafe, maybe just the other way around, over a little bunch of easy stones. Now we will see who goes out that door. Yeah, you crazy loon. Would you start to fight for Pierre? Pancho? That must be Pierre du Lac. Who? Pierre du Lac, one of the worst killers in the whole north country. Pierre du Lac. Of course, that is who he is. His record includes burning the bodies of those he kills. Exactly. Come, Pancho. We are going after those two hombres starting right now. Come on. Come on, Pierre. We gotta get back to the wagon and leave these parts in a hurry. No, no. I do not leave until I do. Two things. Two things. Kill the big one who strike me and then get those rings from the hand of the lady in the cafe. Oh, I tell you we're getting out of here. And I tell you I will do as I say. No man can strike here and leave. And when Pierre sees the rings he wants, Pierre takes the rings he wants. Voila. But them two hombres might come right after us. I think they will, monsieur. Soon it begin to get dark. If those men come up the trail with the high banks on each side, up to where our wagon waits, we will get them. Jess. Whoa. Gun them down, huh? No, no, no, no, no, you fool. We will not make the noise of shooting so near the town. Instead, we will take them with the ropes. You on one side of the bank, I on the other. Hey, that's a good idea, Pierre. Hey, wait. What's the matter? Look. That's a sheriff and a posse over there riding back to town. And what do we want with the sheriff and the posse? Well, I always think we might tell the sheriff about them two hombres making a row back in the cafe. We will tell the sheriff nothing. We will not go near the sheriff alone. Alone. We must be close behind the hombre. Cisco, you are Poncho. Back street up toward those high banks. It is almost dark now. It's hard to see the sheriff. Cisco Francisco. Wait a minute. See, sheriff? Oh, they're all over all of this. I take it you and your partner are on your way out of the camp? We might be, Senor Sheriff. Again. We might not be. Oh, by thunder. Yard, make sure me and the boys will give you an escort for the county line? Right now that's a way to talk to them. Sheriff. Senor Sheriff, I have some information you might like to hear. I don't want none of your information. Now turn them horses round south lines near. But we are riding in this direction, Senor Sheriff. Hey, we're not want to turn you around either. You turn them horses around. Follow me. Punch us through them. Down with your gas. Turn your guns loose, boys. Up this tail. In a moment or two, we'll be out of that reach, Through into the brush. Both horses off the trail and out of sight. Yeah, I'll drag the fat ones here. Both of them knocked out cold. There goes the sheriff now. Now it is our turn, mon ami. We will tie these two and put them in our wagon. And then what happens to them will not be pleas. And so our friends face almost certain death at the hands of the two killers. In just a moment, we'll return to the Cisco Kid. Now back to the Cisco Kid in our gripping story Murder Wagon. Asked by the United States Territorial Marshal to investigate a series of ranch house fires in which ranch owners and their families had been burned out. Sisko and Pancho went into Tumbleweed County. In getting away from the sheriff, our friends rode straight into an ambush prepared for them by the killers Jesse Post and Pierre du Lac, who roped and threw them from their horses as they rode through a small pass. Now, the sheriff thinks these homies rode on past Pierre. Oui. He has done what you call it, the chase of the wild goose. That's right. And he won't be back for some time. How about putting these two in the wagon then later we will kill them. I will kill them myself. Jess. They're both still unconscious. Let's get him into the wagon. Hey, this fat one must weigh a ton. Give me a hand with him, Pierre. Oui, oui. Now throw him in. This is the one who struck me. Now let's hitch up the horses and get out of here. No, no. Not until Pierre gets the ring from the lady of the cafe. Oh, bother. Your rings. Would you oppose Pierre, monsieur? No, no, I just. Oh, all right. Go get your rings. I'll hitch up the horses. That is better. But look, Pierre, there'll still be a lot of people in that cafe. Yeah, think about that. There is a large barn at the end of this town. I will set that on fire. Then when all the people run to the fire, I will steal back to the cafe. The lady, I think, will remain there. You ain't going to kill her? Are you she frown on Pierre? Oui, monsieur. Pierre will kill her. No, Cisco. Cisco. Pancha's head feel big as two balloons? No. So does mine, amigo. Keep your voice down. One of the zombies at least is right outside. Back, you Henry critter. Cisco get knocked out too. See, I came to just a moment or two before you did, Pancho. We were roped and thrown from our horses, Pancho member Now we're right away from the sheriff. But she tell you that Pierre Durlaq would kill us as quick as he would look at us. Pancho's hands and feet style so are mine. It's the what is place Xco and Pancho. And I can see they are in the big wagon. I would judge, amigo. Smack, smack. Crack. That not Pierre? No, that is the other hombre Panga. But he is just about as dangerous as Pierre. We must get free somehow and get out of here. Blasted fool. Going back after rings. What is it? Rings? That is what it sounded like. Yet Pierre Durlacomble seems to have a mania for rings. Santos, amigo. Quack, quack, quack, quack, quack. I must mean those rings the senorita in the cafe was wearing. Now, he wasn't trying to break loose from these ropes. They are tied too tight. What is this? What? What? What? Feels like an axe hanging from the sideboards of the wagon. Sharp against my back. Axe not helpful, Cisco. I'm not so sure. I can just lift myself a little bit. Get the blade of that axe against the rope. Try hard, Cisco. I should not like this place in here. Nor do I like it, Pancho. Besides, the life of that senorita is in danger. Now to get up to the axi. Now, if only the blade is sharp enough, we'll cut through this rope. Bueno, Cut through? No. See, See? Use the axe to cut the ropes from my ankles. Not for you, amigo. Hurry, Cisco. Hurry, hurry, hurry. Do not hurry, Chico. This wagon is full of things. Do not want to knock anything over. Make a noise. Here we are. As soon as I can locate that rope on your wrist, I will cut it. Look at that. Chisco barge's hands free. Now fix the rope on your ankle. I guess I better take a look and see if the mambres have come to you. Get to the back of the wagon. And when he looks in, he will get a little surprise. Get ready, Chico. The pajo ready. What happens, Cisco? Si, Pancho. Take it easy. You were not easy with us, Omri. I will not be easy with you. Bless your heart. I'LL knock the gizzard out of you. You may try, but I do not think you will get very fine. In fact, you are all through fighting right now. Fajo, get some rope and tie this hombre. Tie the hombre, Cisco. Then throw him in the wagon away from that axe. Then what? Drive the wagon back to town. Loco, is it? Yavo? You can tie Loco to the wagon. Madre mia. Pacho, look. That glow on the skyline. The killer Pierre du Lac has set another fire up Diagonal. Hey, Mimi, how about some service at this table? Keep your shirt on, bud. Coming right over. Turn on all you hombres. A big fire, Hmm? Sure is a big fire. Well, no point in my going. Nothing I can do to help. Might as well get some of these here dirty dishes out into the kitchen. Bon soir, my good lad. What are you doing here? I returned to see the charming lady. Well, the charming lady ain't interested. Get out of this kitchen. As you will, mademoiselle. After you give me those rings. I will not. Say you got a nerve. Give me the rings. Get away from me or I'll kill you. No, no. Are you bandy legged mavericks? Then I will take them. No. Look out. You hide my hand unknown. And after that I kill you and burn this cafe. Please. He was going to take my wings and kill me. He will take no more rings on your Rita, nor will he kill anyone else. That's the way to give it to him, stranger. He does not be. You will die for this. He's got a knife. Knife will do. Not ever can you, Rita. He threw him right over your head. Say. And I do not believe he will move for some minutes to come. Cisco. Cisco. Hey, Pancho. I'm in here. Impachio helped you with the bandito, Cisco. Infancho helped you. I never saw a man who needed less help. Oh, he's good. He down too? No, I am Pancho. When the sheriff gets back, this bandido and the other one will make him a nice pair of jail inmates. Yes. Let's go. Of course, the sheriff may arrest you and me too, Pancho. I have no guarantee he will not arrest you too. Well, I got a guarantee he won't. Let him. Say so much as one word and I'll light into him like a ton of bricks. Gracias, senorita. You have put my fears at rest. For I am certain no sheriff would want to be hit even by such a lovely load of bricks. So you're really the Cisco Kid, huh? Si, senorita. Well, I should have known it all the time. I've heard a lot about you, Cisco. Well, I hope some of it has been good. Oh, it's all been good. And from now on, it better be good. Gracias. I don't see how anybody could say anything bad about you, Cisco. And now the sheriff agrees with me. Well, I'm glad to hear it, senorita. It's nice to have friends in a town. It's nice for Pancho and me to come back and pay our respects to those friends. How soon are you coming back this way again, huh? Oh, I cannot say, for I do not know, senorita. It is seldom that Pancho and I make plans. We ride as the spirit moves, when and where we please. But you ain't riding anywhere today. Why do you say that? Well, just come take a look out into the kitchen, see Pancho. Have you been eating all this time in Pancho? Got room for just one more chicken in one more leg of the lamb and three more gooseberry pies. See what I mean, Cisco? Si, senorita. By the time Pancho gets through with all that food, his horse just ain't gonna want to carry him that good. Cisco, if Logo not gonna carry Pancho, then we gotta stay here and Pancho get more good meals. Cisco. See, Pancho, we arrive now to see United States Marshal. No, see, amigo, we must report the capture of those two banteros to the marshals. Then we arrive back to Tumbleweed Street. Perhaps Pancho. Pancho thinks Cisco wants to see St. Rita Mamie again. Senorita Mamie is a very fine senorita, Chico. Very fine senorita. She has an even disposition. Even disposition? Well, it means that she is just the same all the time. Oh, just the same all the time, see? Then she just like Big Maria, Cisco. Oh, but I would not say that, amigo. Big Maria has quite a temper. But she got even dispos disposition. Big Maria got an even disposition, too. How can she have an even disposition and still have quite a temper? Cisco say even disposition mean the same all the time, see? So it does. But then Big Maria got an even disposition. She even all the time. She mad all the time. Oh, Poncho. Oh, she's gone. And so ends another exciting adventure with O. Henry's famous Robin Hood of the west, the Cisco Kid. Be sure to listen again for another thrilling adventure of the Cisco Kid. Cisco Kid was played by Jack Mather, Poncho by Harry. Language, Sam. Restored Classic Western Drama – The Cisco Kid (Original Airdate: 01-13-55)
In this classic episode of "The Cisco Kid," listeners are transported to the lawless frontier of the Old West as Cisco and his loyal sidekick Pancho investigate a violent string of ranch house murders and arson attacks plaguing Tumbleweed County. Facing mistrust from local authorities and the ruthlessness of killers Jesse Post and Pierre du Lac (the feared drivers of the "Murder Wagon"), Cisco and Pancho must outwit foes and risk their lives to bring justice to the frontier. Restored with rich, immersive audio, this episode showcases the unique blend of action, suspense, and lively banter that made the Cisco Kid a radio legend.
Jesse Post and Pierre du Lac, two murderous outlaws, travel the west in a freight wagon, targeting isolated ranches for robbery and murder.
They meticulously cover their tracks after each crime, burning down houses and their victims inside.
The horror is accentuated by Pierre’s chilling motivation: "We have the fine sport too." – Pierre (03:38)
“You mean killing the owners?”
“Oui. Then we throw their bodies into the house, drag them out. Who will know?” – Pierre (04:05)
Sheriff and Deputy are hostile towards outsiders, especially Cisco and Pancho.
When Cisco offers help, the response is defensive and dismissive:
“That’s the way I am looking at it, sir. Come here. There’s two bodies in what’s left of this house.” – Sheriff (10:50)
Cisco and Pancho are ordered out, but plan to search the ruins for clues anyway.
Cisco and Pancho spot Jesse and Pierre at a café. Cisco notices Pierre wearing a woman’s ring suspiciously. The café waitress confirms Pierre’s obsession with jewelry ("He kept trying to slide these rings off my fingers." – Waitress, 15:40).
Pierre approaches Cisco, prompting a fight after Cisco challenges his intentions.
“Since you are looking for a fight, hombre, you will get a fight. And as for you throwing me out of this cafe, maybe just the other way around.” – Cisco (16:25)
Pancho and Cisco suspect Pierre is notorious killer Pierre du Lac.
“No, no. Are you bandy legged mavericks? Then I will take them.” – Pierre, to Mamie, the waitress (28:30)
“I got a guarantee he won’t. Let him say so much as one word, and I’ll light into him like a ton of bricks!” – Mamie (31:45)
“If Loco not gonna carry Pancho, then we gotta stay here and Pancho get more good meals. Cisco!” – Pancho (32:10)
Pierre’s chilling view of their crimes:
“We have the fine sport too.” – Pierre (03:38)
Sheriff’s suspicion of Cisco:
“Cisco Kid, huh? I’ve heard of you so far, sheriff. And it ain’t all been good either.” – Sheriff (09:50)
Cafe Waitress on Pierre:
“I sure do know they’re pests. Especially that big dark one. He kept trying to slide these rings off my fingers.” – Waitress (15:40)
Cisco, standing up to Pierre:
“Since you are looking for a fight, hombre, you will get a fight. And as for you throwing me out of this cafe, maybe just the other way around.” – Cisco (16:25)
Pierre’s obsession:
“When Pierre sees the rings he wants, Pierre takes the rings he wants.” – Pierre (18:30)
Mamie, the waitress, stands firm:
“I will not. Say you got a nerve. Give me the rings. Get away from me or I’ll kill you.” – Mamie (28:35)
Mamie on defending Cisco:
“Let him say so much as one word, and I’ll light into him like a ton of bricks!” – Mamie (31:45)
Classic closing humor:
“Pancho thinks Cisco wants to see St. Rita Mamie again. ... She even all the time. She mad all the time. Oh, Pancho!” – Closing banter (32:10)
The episode balances high-stakes suspense and violence with playful camaraderie and light humor, especially in the interactions between Cisco and Pancho. The villainy of Pierre du Lac is palpable and menacing, while Cisco’s calm resolve and wit shine throughout. The restored audio brings added richness to every scene—the crackle of gunfire, the café’s bustle, and the ominous creak of the Murder Wagon all heighten the immersion.
"Murder Wagon" exemplifies why Old Time Radio Westerns like "The Cisco Kid" endure. It’s packed with suspense, lively characterization, and moral clarity—plus a dose of gentle comedy. This restored episode is both a treat for classic radio fans and a compelling entry point for new listeners.
