It was dusk when the two men rode into the noisy, sprawling Mexican border town of San Cosmo and stopped before the cantina. One was a tall man who wore a white hat and black mask with six guns hung low within easy reach of his lean fingers. He was astride a powerful white stallion. The other was a grave faced Indian dressed in buckskin who sat a paint. They hitched their trail dusty horses to a rack and walked quietly to a window of the cantina, then looked in. Their keen eyes pierced the boisterous throng in the crowded cafe and settled on A tall, lean man with the hard, inscrutable eyes of an outlaw.

[Lone Ranger]

Yes. Tex Vincent is inside that cantina, Tado.

[Tonto]

We trail him long ways.

[Lone Ranger]

He was bound to come to San Cosmo sooner or later.

[Tonto]

Him no Jeff Hardy here?

[Lone Ranger]

Because San Cosmo is a boom town. Easy money to be made here.

Mexicans and Americans alike have heard of the rich silver strike in the hills. Arriving every day to try their luck. During the past week, a bank and a newspaper started up.

[Tonto]

San Cosmo grow plenty big.

Boomtown's attract outlaws. Tex Vincent is one of the worst

[Tonto]

[Lone Ranger]

He's been too clever, Tano. He's responsible for some of the most criminal acts in Texas. Yet he's never been charged with a crime. Jeff Hardy, who never committed a crime, is a fugitive from justice.

[Tonto]

[Lone Ranger]

No, they can't cross the border. But he'll always be hunted while Tex Vincent goes free.

Retiring to a nearby clump of trees, the Lone Ranger revealed his plan. Then he removed his mask and with Tonto's help, used a secret mixture of wild berries and herbs to disguise his face. The change was miraculous. While Tonto waited outside, a stranger walked into the cantina.

[Lone Ranger]

Buenos noches, senor.

[Monk]

Hello, Jamaica. What you have?

[Lone Ranger]

Some food for traveling bartender.

[Tex Vincent]

Bueno.

[Tonto]

You like drink while you wait?

[Lone Ranger]

Yes, just water.

[Monk]

[Tex Vincent]

[Lone Ranger]

A good deal more money could be collected than the amount of the reward. I don't savvy an outlaw with a price on his head would value his freedom enough to pay for it. The man who captured him could probably collect double the reward for not turning him in.

As the Lone Ranger, cleverly disguised, walked from the cantina, his tall figure was followed by two pairs of shrewd, scheming eyes. Then Tex Vincent called to his partner who had been watching the proceedings from a table nearby.

Stranger's got his eye on some crooked coyote with a lot of cash.

And he ain't aiming to share what he gets.

Not long after the Lone Ranger and Jeff Hardy rode away from the rancho. Three horsemen reined in before Jeff's modest halt near the mines. They were Tex Vinson, Monk and Tonto.

[Tex Vincent]

Are you sure this is the right house, Injun?

[Tonto]

Ah, this where Jeff lives?

[Monk]

It's all dark.

[Tex Vincent]

Take a look around, Monk.

[Monk]

[Tex Vincent]

If that stranger bribed you to lead us on a wild goose chase engine, you'd better say your prayers.

That means the stranger's been here. I reckon Jeff refused to pay off, so the stranger's taken him to Texas for the reward. We gotta head them off.

[Monk]

Which way do they go?

[Tex Vincent]

I don't know. We'll head for the border and meet em there.

[Monk]

Suppose a stranger persuades Jeff to pay off before they reach the border?

[Tex Vincent]

You're right. We'll have to trail em.

[Monk]

Providing we can find their trail.

[Tonto]

Tons of know where you find trail Where? Ancho Martinez, Jeff plenty sweet and girl there. Maybe Ranchero know which way him rides are.

[Monk]

Only chance, Tex. Yeah. Get up, coyotes. Get up there. Get up there.

[Tonto]

Racing across the flat border country, the three riders urged their horses through a narrow ravine which opened the on the Rancho Martinez. Riding up to the house, they quickly hitched their horses and knocked on the door.

[Foreign Language Speaker]

Who is it?

[Tex Vincent]

Open the door.

[Foreign Language Speaker]

What do you want?

[Tex Vincent]

We want information. Open up.

[Foreign Language Speaker]

Do not try anything. How you say, phony, Senors. I am holding a gun.

You make it look like he is the murderer.

Show us the trail those two took and we'll let the old man go. Don't. And we'll. We'll use some branded irons.

On the trail of the masked man and Jeff Hardy, Tex and Monk drove their weary, hard ridden horses along rock studded trails through dusty, barren arroyos, over a cactus thatched plain. They camped only long enough for their tired, almost exhausted mounts to regain some small measure of their strength. Then spurred them on until the animals seemed as if they would not be able to drag themselves forward another step. It was late afternoon of the following day after a particularly arduous trip, when their hard driven horses splashed through the shallow Rio Grande to the Texas shore. Suddenly, near a clump of trees and they saw signs of the quarry they had trailed for so long.

[Tex Vincent]

Looks like a campfire. Yeah. Oh, Lane.

[Tonto]

Up there.

[Monk]

Oh, Hoss.

[Tex Vincent]

We caught up with them too.

[Monk]

My horse was about to fold up.

[Tex Vincent]

Jeff must have decided to let the masked man turn him into the sheriff and collect a reward.

[Monk]

Yeah, I reckon so. Otherwise he'd never have come this far.

[Tex Vincent]

$5,000 ain't nothing to sneeze at, Monk.

[Monk]

What do we do now?

[Tex Vincent]

Wait here till nightfall. Then we'll sneak up on him.

[Monk]

What do we do with the masked man?

[Tex Vincent]

Drill him. That'll show Jeff we mean business.

[Monk]

Yeah, I don't know. I think we.

[Tex Vincent]

I'm doing the thinking.

[Monk]

Just as you say, Tex.

[Tex Vincent]

Toss your reins about that grease wood. We'll move up on him by foot now, just far enough to make sure the other two armies were trailing. And we wait till dark.

[Monk]

Look at that horse limping. That's why they had to stop.

[Tex Vincent]

It's one lame horse that did us a good turn. And after dark we'll do us another.

[Narrator]

In the heavy shadows of night, which lay like fingers across the prairie, two men crept stealthily toward a campfire which had been built by the Lone Ranger and Jeff Hardy. Then the two hard featured outlaws carefully pulled guns from their holsters and advanced on their quarry.

[Tex Vincent]

Don't make a sound that we're close enough to cover.

[Monk]

We're almost there.

[Tex Vincent]

They're facing the fire. Their backs this way. All set?

[Jeff Hardy]

Yeah.

[Tex Vincent]

Hoist your hands.

[Monk]

Get em up.

[Tex Vincent]

That's just a sample of what you get if you get out of hand.

[Lone Ranger]

[Tex Vincent]

Surprise Jeff.

[Jeff Hardy]

I suppose you came to collect the reward offered for me.

[Tex Vincent]

Maybe, maybe not.

You framed me for that murder.

[Tex Vincent]

You went to that bank job with me like a pig being led to slaughter Jeff.

[Lone Ranger]

And you did frame Jeff for the murder of the bank guard.

[Monk]

[Tex Vincent]

[Monk]

You ain't forgetting we're in Texas, are you, Tex?

[Tex Vincent]

No, I ain't forgetting the wide open spaces. Who's to hear us?

[Lone Ranger]

I've heard of a lot of low tricks in my time, Tex, but framing an innocent man?

[Tex Vincent]

Sure, I framed him. I shot the guard, but I was too smart to take the rap. I took the cash too. Jeff here was too dumb to know what it was all about.

[Tonto]

All right, Sheriff.

[Lone Ranger]

What?

[Monk]

Look. Hold on them guns. You're covered half right.

[Tex Vincent]

[Monk]

We've been framed.

[Tex Vincent]

[Narrator]

Think again. We heard you betray yourself from that clump of trees.

[Monk]

Engine cut around your camp and beat you here.

[Tonto]

The Lone Ranger and Tanda fixed this whole scheme between them.

[Tex Vincent]

A lone Ranger? You mean the masked man?

[Tonto]
