Herb Barton went to the Yukon Territory.
Narrator
To make easy money.
Public Service Announcer
From among the rough men who hope to profit from the work of others, he picked two companions, Glen Beaver and Frank Carver. Within a short time, Herb and his companions were notorious throughout the territory. And since they had succeeded in evading the law and covering their trail each time, Herb Barton and his cronies began to think they were invincible. The most recent crime of the Barton crowd started when one of them overheard a conversation in a White Horse cafe and reported it to Herb in their hotel room.
Herb Barton
Where you been, Herb? Over to the cafe. There's something right in us. You, Herb? Yeah. What? I hope it's something that'll bring us in some dough. Use some about now. I think it'll get us plenty if Herb decides to go to work on it. Couple of prospectors run the cafe. Telling a barkeeper about an old sourdough who made a strike a few miles from here on the north trail. What's that got to do with us? Just this. An old sourdough or Cy Atkins lives out there alone with his eight year old granddaughter. Understand he hasn't brought his take into town. Seems to think he has a better hiding place right out there at his cabin. And what you're thinking is that he's got gold out there in hiding just waiting for us to go take him. Is that it, Frank? Yeah. Ought to be a cinch to grab that gold from the old man and that youngster.
Frank Carver
There'd be nothing to it.
Herb Barton
What do you think, Herb? He'll go out there and make him sell with the Golden Hiss and we'll grab it.
Frank Carver
Wonder we go after it right now.
Herb Barton
No, we're waiting till tonight. Those no one will see us riding out of town on the north trail. No use making people suspicious. And after we grab the gold, we'll double back and head for Skagway. We could reach there before the snow comes. That's just what we'll do, Frank. Maybe after this that old sourdough will learn to keep his mouth shut about what he digs from his claim.
Public Service Announcer
Earlier that evening, Sergeant Preston and Yukon King followed the north trail on a trip to Elk Landing. They stopped for a short visit with Sigh Atkins and his granddaughter Jenny.
Sergeant Preston
Ho, boy. Ho, boy. Come along, G.
Frank Carver
Well, Sergeant Preston and Ding, we heard you stopping out here and Jenny said she was sure it was you.
Cy Atkins
Hello, Sergeant. Golly, I'm glad to see King again.
Frank Carver
Morning over the chill wind.
Sergeant Preston
Thanks, S. We couldn't pass without saying hello to you and Jenny, could we, King?
Frank Carver
Here you are. Just sit right here, Sergeant.
Sergeant Preston
Thanks, Si.
Cy Atkins
Grandpa owns a lot of gold, Sergeant.
Frank Carver
Jenny, let me tell the sergeant about it.
Sergeant Preston
I heard about it in town. Si. Is it really true?
Frank Carver
Yep.
Narrator
At last I made a strike.
Frank Carver
I got plenty hit here.
Sergeant Preston
Well, don't you think it's risky to hide your gold, sir? Why not take it to the bank in White House?
Frank Carver
Well, I tell you, Sergeant, I don't trust banks. What's more, I wonder where I can look at it once in a while to make sure I really do have gold.
Sergeant Preston
I can understand how you feel, Sigh, But I think you're making a big mistake keeping it here. I'll be back this way tomorrow. Why don't you ride into town with me, Deposit your gold. That'll be safe.
Frank Carver
Well, you think I'll decide you?
Sergeant Preston
I certainly do. Since I heard about your gold, others have surely heard about it too. And there are a good many men here in the Yukon who wouldn't hesitate to try to get it.
Frank Carver
They have to find it first. I have a mighty good hiding place for it. But since you think I oughta, I'll take it to town tomorrow when you come back this way.
Sergeant Preston
Good. That's the sensible thing to do, sir.
Public Service Announcer
After visiting a while with Cy Atkins and Jenny Preston rose to leave.
Sergeant Preston
Well, King and I have to leave now.
Cy Atkins
Oh, I wish King didn't have to leave yet. I want him to sit and play a little while. For God. You and King just got here, Sergeant.
Sergeant Preston
Oh, well. Tell you what, Jenny. Suppose I leave King here until I come back tomorrow. Would you like that?
Cy Atkins
Oh, darling, would you leave him? Honest?
Sergeant Preston
Of course. That is, if your grandfather doesn't have drank.
Frank Carver
What object? Let me tell you. If I had my way, King would stay here all the time. How would you like that, fella?
Sergeant Preston
All right. I'll stop by tomorrow on the way back to town. Stay here, King. Stay with Jenny. King doesn't like me to go without him. No, he'll enjoy being here with you, Gunny. Bye.
Frank Carver
Bye.
Sergeant Preston
Ready, boy? Easy now.
Public Service Announcer
It was some time later When Herb Barton and his two companions, Slim and Frank, pulled to a stop in front of Cy Atkins cabin.
Herb Barton
First, we lacked sort of nice so as to get inside without the old man becoming suspicious. Come on. Hey, he's got a dog in there. We didn't count on that. Don't worry about the mutt. Leave it in the.
Public Service Announcer
As they stood waiting, Cy unlocked the door and opened it to crack. The old sourdough peered out cautiously at the three figures standing in the eerie light of the Yukon night.
Frank Carver
Then he asked, well, what is it you want?
Herb Barton
All right, Mr. Atkins. Nothing at all to worry about.
Frank Carver
Just what is it you want, mister?
Herb Barton
Brought a message for you from town. That dog sparking makes it hard for me to talk.
Frank Carver
Quiet there. Quiet.
Narrator
King.
Herb Barton
He doesn't seem to mind you very well.
Frank Carver
Jenny, take King and shut him up in the back room, will you?
Herb Barton
There.
Frank Carver
The dog's shut in the back room. Come in now if you want.
Herb Barton
Thanks. You don't intend to stay long.
Frank Carver
Now, what is it you want to tell me, mister?
Herb Barton
I'll hold your horses, Pop. Frank, go over there, turn the key in the door to that back room where the dog is. Right.
Cy Atkins
Why are you locking the door? You can't come out with the door closed.
Herb Barton
We're not taking any chances, little girl. Now, Atkins, let's get right to the point. Where's all that gold you got hidden around here? Come on, speak up and make it silent.
Frank Carver
So that's it. You came here to rob me. You heard about my gold.
Herb Barton
He admits he has cold hair.
Cy Atkins
Grandpa, make him go away.
Herb Barton
Shut up, youngster.
Frank Carver
I'll bust you these or recruiters as thieves. Jenny, they've come here to steal our gold. Sergeant Preston warned me somebody might hear about it and try to get it from me.
Herb Barton
Sergeant Preston. Hear that, Herb? He's talking about that money with a big dog. Yeah, I know.
Cy Atkins
Sergeant Preston's big dog, King is right there in the back room. And if he gets out, he'll make you leave us alone.
Herb Barton
Oh, so that's the great husky we've been hearing about, huh? Well, we'll see that he doesn't get out of that room. Where's that gold hidden at him? You better tell us and tell us quick if you know what's good for.
Frank Carver
You since you came here to get it, you can just hunt until you find it. Mister, I'm not telling you or anybody else where it is.
Herb Barton
He's wasting our time, Herb. That dog and Mary searching freshens.
Frank Carver
He must be coming back soon. The old man's just Stolen for time.
Cy Atkins
Sergeant Preston will come back tomorrow, and then you'll be sorry.
Frank Carver
Hush up, Jenny shouldn't have told him that.
Public Service Announcer
I'm glad she did.
Herb Barton
Tell him now. We don't have to be in any rush.
Cy Atkins
Sally. Grandpa. Hi, sir.
Frank Carver
It's all right, Jenny. Forget it.
Herb Barton
Make the old coot talk. Herb, we give him a good going.
Frank Carver
Over, he'll tell us. Nope. Even if you do beat me, I'll not have you.
Cy Atkins
Let me. Let us alone.
Herb Barton
Hey, there, youngster. Frank. Come here, you.
Frank Carver
Let me go.
Cy Atkins
Let me go.
Frank Carver
Hey, take your hands off my granddaughter, you hear?
Herb Barton
Dog knows something's wrong out here.
Cy Atkins
If he gets out, he'll help us.
Frank Carver
Now listen, Pop.
Herb Barton
We don't go for slapping little girls around. And I know you wouldn't want to see such a thing happen. You better tell us where that gold is hidden and you better talk back. Oh, good.
Cy Atkins
Grandpa, make them let me go. He's holding my arm and it hurts.
Frank Carver
You yellow back coat. Take your hands off that youngster, you hear?
Herb Barton
That's up to you, Pop. Now what do you say? You want to see a little girl like that get her ear spots? Just as you want to be stubborn.
Cy Atkins
I hate to let him go.
Frank Carver
Oh, no, mister. Let her go. Let her go. I reckon you win. Good.
Herb Barton
Now you're talking sense. Let her go, Frank.
Cy Atkins
I'm afraid of him.
Herb Barton
Come on, speak up. Where's the gold?
Frank Carver
I'm near a loose floorboard in that corner over there.
Herb Barton
Go find out if he's telling the truth, Please. All right. Take a minute to find out.
Frank Carver
Here's a loose floorboard, like he said.
Herb Barton
Is the gold there? Yeah.
Frank Carver
Here. A couple of sacks. It's a gold, all right.
Herb Barton
Now what do we do, Herb? Tie the old man, the girl and gag him. Hurry up and get it over with. That won't take long.
Public Service Announcer
While Herb Barton held a gun, the other two crooks tied and gagged Cy Atkins and Jenny. Then they carried them to a bunch.
Herb Barton
And left them there.
Frank Carver
Can't spread the alarm now.
Herb Barton
What about the dog in the back room? Herb can't get out, so why worry? I've heard stories about how he helped Sergeant Preston sack people. When Preston does come back, that dog will help him. Pay a luck. I didn't think of that. I better fix that mutt.
Public Service Announcer
Will be easier if you could shoot.
Herb Barton
At him through the window, maybe. Ah. I noticed as we rode up that all the wooden setters are closed. They fasten on the inside. I'll tell you what. You go unlock the door, Frank. Yeah. Then What?
Public Service Announcer
The door opens out.
Herb Barton
You and Slim put your weight against it.
Frank Carver
Ease it open just a crack.
Public Service Announcer
You have to be careful the dog.
Herb Barton
Doesn'T lunge against it and get through. Come on, Slim. All right. Now what hurts? Ease the door open just a crack. Like I said before, I'll plug that mutt with a bullet as he lunges at the small open. All right, I'm ready now. So go ahead. Pull it open just a little. All right, keep your weight against it, Slim. Here he goes.
Frank Carver
Quick.
Narrator
Hurt, Sonny.
Frank Carver
Get out.
Herb Barton
Give it to him. Hurry.
Frank Carver
Don't quiet him.
Herb Barton
Got him lying quiet now. Let's get away from here. When that money comes here tomorrow, you won't be able to trail us without that mud. We'll cover our trail when we leave here. That's right. Let's go.
Narrator
We'll continue our adventure in just a moment.

For some time after the crooks had left, the great dog King lay still thinking the husky was dead. Barton and his cronies had left the door open between the rooms, but the bullet had just grazed the top of King's head, stunning him for a time. Finally the dog stirred with a puzzled whine, rose shakily to his feet. For a moment King stood still. Then he walked slowly into the main part of the cabin where Cy Atkins and little Jenny lay bound and gagged on the bump. King went over to Jenny and whined. Then, seeing the girl struggle, the intelligent dog realized she was tied. He put his front paws on the edge of the bunk and sniffed at the cord that bound Jenny's hand. And then he started gnawing at the cord. In a few moments the cord parted and Jenny reached up and removed the gag from her mother.
Cy Atkins
Oh, King, I thought you were dead. Now I'll take the cord from the fetus and thy grandma.
Public Service Announcer
In a short time Cy Atkins was also free. And as he and Jenny stood rubbing their wrists, King whined and sniffed at the front door.
Frank Carver
Jenny, honey, they got my gold. Every think of it. But you said we're lucky King was here and that he didn't get killed. Here, here, fellas. Yes, just like I figured. That foot of just creased the top of King's head. Oh, get a cloth in that bottle on the shelf, can you?
Cy Atkins
All right.
Frank Carver
Poor fella. You would have kept him out in the first place if I hadn't been so dumb to put in the other room like I did. Just putting the table there. I think this will help you a bit. Oh, easy fella. I'm not aiming to hurt you. You'll feel better.
Herb Barton
Now.
Cy Atkins
Who wants to go out? Maybe he wants to follow those bad men, Gramps.
Frank Carver
I reckon that's it all right. But they have guns. They'd really kill him. Next time we could get sergeant.
Cy Atkins
We go with Kimby. Get back here going.
Frank Carver
I know he margin Preston. That must be it. You see, Jenny, King knows we're talking about his master. He's a well trained dog. Maybe if I tell him to, he'll go find the sergeant. Oh, golly, Grandpa, do you really think it's worth trying? I know he would, I confess and that must be it. He knows we're talking about his master. He's a well trained dog. Maybe if I tell him to, he'll go find the sign.
Cy Atkins
Oh God.
Frank Carver
You really think it's worth trying find Sergeant Preston. King. Get Sergeant Preston. Go get him, fella.
Cy Atkins
Running toward the door and then back to you. Grand.
Frank Carver
I'm sure he knows. I'll open the front door. Let him out. Come on. Find Sergeant Preston. Go on, boys. Get Sergeant Preston.
Public Service Announcer
Several hours later, Sergeant Preston, who was sleeping in the cabin of the constable at Elk Landing, was awakened by barking and scratching at the cabin door.
Herb Barton
Sergeant, do you hear that?
Sergeant Preston
Yes. Sounds like King. I told him to stay at Cy.
Herb Barton
Atkins till I got back there, and.
Sergeant Preston
I'll go see if it is King.
Frank Carver
King.
Sergeant Preston
What brought you here, fella? What happened to your head? Come here, boy.
Frank Carver
What is it, Sergeant?
Sergeant Preston
Why'd King followed you here, I wonder? The looks of his head, I'd say he's trying to tell me I need it back at the Atkins place. Constable, you mean you'd go back there.
Herb Barton
Right now because King's acting that way?
Sergeant Preston
I know King better than you do. He trailed me here for a purpose, and I'm going to dress and go back. I'm sure there's something wrong.
Herb Barton
You have that much faith in King.
Sergeant Preston
I'll dress and go along with it. That's a bullet trace on King's head. I know something's wrong. It's Cy Atkins cabin. Let's hurry.
Public Service Announcer
It was early morning when Sergeant Preston and the constable arrived with King at Cy Atkins cabin and learned what had happened.
Cy Atkins
They took grandpa's gold, Sergeant, and he shot at King. We thought poor King was killed, too.
Sergeant Preston
I saw the bullet mark, Johnny. They'll regret that. King will not give up until he tracks them to their hiding place.
Frank Carver
I think King wanted to go right after him. But I told him to go. For you, Sergeant.
Sergeant Preston
Glad you did. Thanks.
Herb Barton
He's sure some dog to understand the.
Sergeant Preston
Way things I'm saying. Kings and people to put constable after those cooks now openly come back. Si. We'll have your gold for you. All right, constable, let's go. Come on, King.
Public Service Announcer
Once outside, King had no trouble picking up the scent of the men he hated. Meanwhile, Herb Barton and his friends Slim and Frank had covered their track by riding for a couple of miles in the shallow creek. And then after circling the town of Whitehorse, they rode along the trail toward the south border. Finally, they sighted a deserted cabin a short distance ahead of them.
Herb Barton
Hey, we can hole up in that deserted cabin just ahead and fix some grub. I'm hungry. Yeah, I could do with some rest, too.
Frank Carver
You reckon it's safe to stop?
Herb Barton
Fellas, I think we ought to put plenty of distance between us and that old Salvador cabin. Ah, what are you worried about? We'll be plenty safe enough.
Narrator
It's early morning.
Herb Barton
Will be heading back to that cabin.
Frank Carver
He finds the old man and little girl tied and gagged. And especially when he finds out what.
Herb Barton
You did to his dog. It'll be hot on our trail. Sure. But even if he does manage his practice as far as the quick, we'll lose our trail there. Remember, he doesn't have that much to help him. Now. We've had many a mounty trider trailers before this. That's right. And we always cut away person isn't going to be any better than the rest of them without that dog of his. Well, thanks R. Now there's the captain. Tie the horses behind it and then go inside. I think the gold inside where we can keep an eye on it. All right, let's go in.
Public Service Announcer
After King had picked up the scent of the crooks and led Sergeant Preston and the constable around the town, the two Mounties found themselves traveling the trail south of Whitehorse. For some time they rode in silence. And then as they rounded a bend in the trail, Sgt. Preston pointed ahead and spoke.
Sergeant Preston
Look, there's a cabin ahead on the left. There are horses behind it.
Herb Barton
You think they belong to the men we're after?
Sergeant Preston
That's possible. Last time I came this way, that cabin was deserted. Stop a minute here. King. Circle around through the trees and across the cabinet from the rear. We'll soon find out who's there. Get up.
Herb Barton
Circle.
Sergeant Preston
Come on.
Narrator
We'll continue our adventure in just a moment.

Inside the cabin, Herb Barton and his two friends had just finished eating and they heard horses outside.
Herb Barton
They heard. You hear that? Something's biting the horses. Yeah, I wonder what it is. Anything out the window? Oh, I can't get a view of the back from here. Why not take a look around, Slim. All right, maybe a wolf snooping around or something like that. That's what I think. But we can't be too careful.
Frank Carver
Hey, let's talk something. Couple of Mounties. Mounties?
Herb Barton
Yeah.
Frank Carver
I looked around the corner of the cabin and saw them just mounting back in the trees.
Herb Barton
What are we going to do?
Sergeant Preston
Take it easy.
Herb Barton
They can't prove anything against. We'll have our guns ready.

Just.

Narrator
What's it, Constable?
Frank Carver
My wrist.
Herb Barton

Sergeant Preston

Herb Barton
I'll knock you down again.
Sergeant Preston
Right now.
Public Service Announcer
All I need.
Herb Barton
Here you go.
Public Service Announcer
The fight was over. For a moment there wasn't a sound. Even the great dog King seemed to sense the tenseness of the moment. Then Slim spoke.
Herb Barton
Holy Max.
Sergeant Preston
Get up, Barton.
Herb Barton
I've had enough.
Sergeant Preston
Here, King. Watch him, fella.
Herb Barton
I thought that dog was gentle.
Frank Carver
This must be Sergeant Freshman.
Herb Barton
Yeah.
Narrator
Nobody else could have whipped her like that.
Herb Barton
Money sucked up the floor with them. These two sacks on the table must be kayaks and gold.
Sergeant Preston
Sergeant, we'll take hand along with these cooks to Surrey's cabin for definite identification. Let's bandage their wounds and be on our way.
Public Service Announcer
After the crook's wounds had been attended to, they were tied to their horses. The two mounties took them back to Cy Atkins place.
Sergeant Preston
Hold on, hold on. I'll bring Cy and Dummy out here to look at them.
Herb Barton
Right.
Frank Carver
Sergeant. You brought them back.
Cy Atkins
I know you would.
Sergeant Preston
Come out and look them over. Sign. You too, Denny.
Frank Carver
Come on, Jimmy. By Jimmy.
Narrator
Those are the three cooks that took.
Frank Carver
My gold and shot it, King?
Cy Atkins
That's right, Sergeant. Honey were awful mean. I was afraid of him too.
Sergeant Preston
I'll have your gold in my saddle bag, S. I'll get it. There you are.

Dang, Sergeant, that dog.
Narrator
I can't figure out how you thought.

Frank Carver
Top of his head with a bullet. He gnawed the ropes and even went after Sergeant Preston. We should have known that mutt was.
Herb Barton
Too smart for us.
Frank Carver
Ah, shut up.
Herb Barton
We just had bad luck after all.
Frank Carver
Sure. And it was our good luck that Sergeant Preston left King with his last night.
Sergeant Preston
I arrest you three men in the name of the crown, sire. What are you going to do about that gold now that you have it back?
Frank Carver
Well, I reckon I'm going to get what you told me to do, Sergeant. I'm going to ride into town with you and the constable right now and put this gold in the bank.
Sergeant Preston
That's more like it, darling.
Cy Atkins
Uncle King is just the most wonderful dog in the whole world, darling.
Sergeant Preston
You know, I think a great deal of King myself, Jenny.
Herb Barton
Ah, he's just another mutt to me.
Cy Atkins
King doesn't like him, does he, Sergeant?
Sergeant Preston
Dogs are pretty good judges of people, Jenny. When King shows dislike for someone, I'm always suspicious of that party.
Cy Atkins
You're glad he likes Grandpa and me. You do like him, don't you, King?
Sergeant Preston
He certainly does, Jenny. Now, you and your grandfather better get ready to ride to town with us. I'm anxious to get Boston and his friends in jail. Then this case will be closed.

The episode opens with Herbert Barton and his companions, Glen Beaver and Frank Carver, in the Yukon Territory, where they become notorious for their relentless pursuit of easy money through the plunder of others' hard-earned gold. A chance overhearing of an old prospector, Cy Atkins, discussing his hidden gold sparks Herb’s interest.
Herb Barton (06:03): “We could reach there before the snow comes. That’s just what we’ll do, Frank.”
Intent on seizing Cy’s gold, Herb and Frank devise a plan to rob the old man and his granddaughter, Jenny. Meanwhile, Sergeant Preston and his dog Yukon King are patrolling the north trail and make a visit to Cy Atkins’ cabin.
Sergeant Preston (07:00): “Thanks, S. We couldn’t pass without saying hello to you and Jenny, could we, King?”
Cy confides in Sergeant Preston about his substantial gold holdings but is hesitant to store it in the bank, fearing for its safety. Sensing potential danger, Sergeant Preston advises Cy to secure his gold in town.
As dusk falls, Herb Barton and his gang execute their plan, covertly entering Cy’s cabin. They attempt to intimidate Cy into revealing the gold's location, tying up both him and Jenny. However, their plans are foiled thanks to Yukon King, who survives a gunshot and instinctively aids in the escape.
Herb Barton (10:42): “Tell him to shut up, youngster.”
Despite being wounded, Yukon King manages to free Jenny by gnawing through the ropes binding her. Recognizing the dog's loyalty, Frank Carver expresses regret over their miscalculation.
