With his faithful Indian companion, Toto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoofbeats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again.
Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. Let's go, big fellow. Are you Silver?
Chumba
Hooray.
Narrator
John Marks, known to everyone as Miser Marks, lived alone in an old house a few miles from Roper City in southern Oklahoma. He went into town for supplies. Only a couple of times a month and four times a year, he had a meeting with a banker.
Chumba
Get up there.
Lone Ranger
Get along there.
Narrator
After one of these meetings, he was about halfway home when three men from town suddenly appeared from behind big boulders. They flourished guns and shouted all rain.
Lone Ranger
Mark. Stop where you are. Do what we say or we'll shoot.
Chumba
Marks.
Lone Ranger
Crowder. What's this mean?
Chumba
Do as you're told, and you'll soon find out. See if he's pecking a gun, Steve.
Lone Ranger
Sure.
Chumba
Jake, you take charge of his horse.
Lone Ranger
Right.
Chumba
If this is a robbery, you guessed it. Mark.
Lone Ranger
He's not armed.
Chumba
Crowder, I Didn't think he'd be. He's too stingy to buy a gun.
Lone Ranger
Crowder, you're wasting your time. I'm a poor man.
Chumba
Don't tell us that. We know you call on the banker four times a year.
Narrator
Ask the banker.
Lone Ranger
He'll tell you that I don't even.
Narrator
Have a bank account.
Chumba
Because you keep your cash at home. I learned about you in a roundabout way. You own a lot of bonds, and you go to the bank to collect the interest on them. Searching, boys, you'll be sorry.
Lone Ranger
Hey, look here, Carter. Cash. And here's his bond credit.
Chumba
Bundle up. Well, they're worthless to you.
Lone Ranger
They're registered in my name.
Chumba
You can't get anything for them.
Lone Ranger
Only a few hundred in cash. Carter, take the money, but leave me the bonds.
Chumba
You've been collecting interest on these bonds for a long time, Mark. You must have a tidy sum hoarded away.
Narrator
Give me those bonds.
Lone Ranger
You grab the bonds. Running away? Stop. Real fire. Unfack your old skin, Flint. You got him, Carter? Yeah.
Chumba
I warned him. Let's get the bonds.
Lone Ranger
Should have known better to make a break like that. He moved mighty sudden. Snatched the bonds right out of my hand. See if he's dead. He is. Here's the bond.
Chumba
It's a bad break.
Lone Ranger
Why? We planned to kill him anyhow, so he couldn't tell the law about us.
Chumba
I wanted to make him tell where he's hidden his cash before we shot him.
Lone Ranger
Must be somewhere in his house. Yeah.
Chumba
We'll have to search for it. I hope to get it the easy way. Give me those bonds, Jake.
Lone Ranger
Sure.
Chumba
I've got everything planned. To use the bonds to frame a man for the murder of Miser Marks. You have? Yeah. In my saddlebags I have the clothes I'll need in connection with the plans. I've even picked a man to frame.
Lone Ranger
Why go to all that trouble? Why don't we just take the cash and clear out?
Chumba
There's more cash hidden in Mark's house. I want that, too.
Lone Ranger
Let's try to find it before we clear out.
Chumba
With our reputations, the sheriff is sure to expect us when he hears of Mark's death. If we've cleared out of town, he'll be sure we're guilty. There'll be a manhunt for us, and I don't want to be dodging the law. We've got to get back to town and behave the same as usual. Until someone's hanged for Mark's murder. Then the case will be closed and we can go away and live High on the old miser's money.
Lone Ranger
If we can find where it's hidden.
Chumba
It'S somewhere in this house. Now, I'll go to town to arrange the frame up. I'll take the bonds and some of the money with me. You boys wait here. And while I'm gone, digest shallow grave and bury marks. We got you.
Narrator
That night, shortly after dark, Tonto, the Indian friend of the Lone Ranger, rode toward Roper City. He intended to camp among the big boulders, which were a familiar landmark. As he turned his paint horse off the trail and approached the rocks, Jake stepped into view. In the moonlight, Tanto could see that he held a gun.
Lone Ranger
Hold it, stranger.
Narrator
Horse gun.
Lone Ranger
Hold on. Who. Where are you going?
Chumba
Why, camp among trees. You're too late.
Lone Ranger
I've already made camp there and I don't want company. So move on.
Chumba
I mean, not know you there now. Miko, get him up. Scout.
Narrator
About an hour later, the Lone Ranger, riding from another direction, saw the moonlit boulders where he planned to meet Tato. He also saw a man riding from the direction of town. Turn off the trail and guide his horse out of sight behind the boulders.
Lone Ranger
It looks as though someone else is there instead of Tono. I better investigate. Wait here, boy.
Narrator
Leaving Silver at ground hitch, the masked man moved silently toward the rocks. Presently he was near enough to hear voices and knew that more than one man occupied the campsite. He moved still closer and heard.
Lone Ranger
When you got through, what'd you do.
Narrator
With the clothes you wore?
Chumba
Burned them in the fireplace while I was in Shag's house planting the barn.
Lone Ranger
He's make sure they were burned complete so no trace of them will be found.
Chumba
I bet you.
Lone Ranger
Where'd you hide the barns?
Chumba
We need Shag's Mattis. And I gave $50 to Shag. He's really framed Titan. Sooner or later, someone will see Mark's horse wandering around and tell the sheriff. The sheriff will wonder what happened to Mark.
Lone Ranger
Chances are he'll go to Mark's place.
Chumba
Right. As soon as he sees the signs of a robbery, he'll remember how Shag was spending money tonight. And he'll go after Shag.
Lone Ranger
You can find the evidence you planted mighty slick. We're in the clear.
Chumba
Sure we are.
Lone Ranger
No one even suspects we've been near the Miser's place.
Chumba
Of course.
Lone Ranger
An Injun saw me here tonight.
Chumba
What Injun?
Lone Ranger
Oh, he came here intending to camp. I sent him on his way.
Chumba
An Injun, huh?
Lone Ranger
Last I saw him, he was heading towards town.
Chumba
In that case, I reckon we've nothing to worry about.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger, having learned that Tahoe had gone to Roper's side moved silently away from the rocks, wondering about the conversation. He was heading for town when Steve.
Lone Ranger
Said, what are we waiting for, Carter? Let's go to Mark's place and start looking for the cage.
Chumba
It's too risky to go there now. The moonlight's bright enough to read by. Someone riding near the house might see our horses.
Lone Ranger
You mean we gotta wait till the moon sets?
Chumba
Yeah, it sets early tonight and we don't have long to wait.
Narrator
Meantime, Tonto waited in Roper City.
Lone Ranger
He's.
Narrator
He sat at a table close to the front window of the cafe and divided his attention between his horse tethered to the hitch rail outside and a grizzled old man who sat at a nearby table spending money freely.
Lone Ranger
Hey there, Baldine.
Chumba
I want better service tonight. I'm a cash customer.
Lone Ranger
All right, all right. Wait a minute.
Narrator
While Tuttle watched, the sheriff approached the ragged old fellow.
Chumba
Hi there, Sheriff. Sit down. Be my guest.
Lone Ranger
I want to talk to you. Sure thing. You gave baldy a $50 bill.
Chumba
That's right. Gave me change. I still have.
Lone Ranger
I've never known you to have more than a couple of dollars at a time. Where'd you get a $50 bill?
Chumba
A stranger gave it to me for holding his horse.
Lone Ranger
You expect me to believe that?
Chumba
It's true. I was standing near the end of the street when this fellow came up and dismounted. He asked me to hold his horse. I saw him walk between a couple of buildings and in a few minutes he was back. He handed me the bill and rode away.
Lone Ranger
You lying old ruin. No one in his right mind would pay that much for holding a horse.
Chumba
Yeah, Maybe he made a mistake. I thought it was a $1 bill.
Lone Ranger
Till I got inside.
Chumba
Here, wait.
Lone Ranger
Wait a minute. What did the stranger look like?
Chumba
Well, he wore a long tail coat and had a big. Had big bushy whiskers and chalk of black hair. No hat. And he had eyeglasses.
Lone Ranger
I never saw anyone like that around town.
Chumba
Neither did I, until tonight. I'd like to see a fellow like him more often.
Lone Ranger
Sounds mighty thin to me, Shag. If I hear of anyone being robbed of a $50bill I'll know just where to look for the gen who's stolen.
Narrator
As the sheriff moved away, Tato glanced through the window and saw the great horse, Silver, standing next to Scout. He hurried outside. The Lone Rangers standing in the dark alley between the cafe and the hotel with his hat drawn low over his eyes called softly Here I am Taro Kimasabi.
Chumba
Me not able to camp near Boulder.
Lone Ranger
Yes, I know. I heard the men there speak of you. So I came on to tell you.
Chumba
That's why me tie scout. Where you sure to see him.
Lone Ranger
That was a good idea.
Chumba
And me not no other place to camp. So me get room and hotel here. Dor key. You go in back way. No one see mask.
Lone Ranger
I'll take the key. But we've some writing to do before we go to the room.
Chumba
Oh, where we go?
Lone Ranger
To John Mark's house.
Chumba
Why we go there?
Lone Ranger
The three men who are camped at the Big Boulders were talking about Mark's. They said something about a robbery and a frame up.
Chumba
We tell sheriff.
Lone Ranger
Yes. First I want to know more about the situation at Mark's house.
Chumba
Let's go. He's ready.
Narrator
Traveling a roundabout route to avoid passing the men who were camped at the Big boulders. The Lone Ranger and Tonto soon reached the miser's home. Leaving their horses concealed in the nearby woods, they approached the dark house and rapped on the door. After waiting a moment, the masked man tried the door and found it locked.
Lone Ranger
Otto, the situation justifies breaking the lock.
Narrator
We'll continue our lonely Ranger adventure in just a moment.

Recently, a new client called me and started by saying, Mr. Morgan, I really need your help, but I'm just a nobody. Those words stunned me and I immediately called him back. And we're now helping him and his family after a terrible accident. I'm John Morgan of Morgan and Morgan. Everybody who comes to our firm at their time of need is a somebody. I grew up poor, but my grandmother was like a queen to us. At Morgan and Morgan, our goal is to level the playing field for you and your family at your time of need. The insurance company has unlimited money and resources. You need a firm who can fight them toe to toe. For right at 30 years, we have fought them in courtrooms throughout America. Our results speak for themselves. And always remember this. Everybody is a somebody and nobody is a nobody. Visit forthepeople.com to learn about our firm, Morgan and Morgan. For the people injured, visit forthepeople.com for an office near you.
Lone Ranger
All over the country, in every direction. How ya, how you doing? Is a question. And here's what the happy people have to say.
Narrator
Eating our Wheaties and do, do, do an okay, okay. Sure enough, take Midwestern champions for instance. When Bobby Feller takes the mound, the outfield boys sit on the ground.
Lone Ranger
That Wheaties pitching leaves them there watching batters fan the air.
Narrator
And when we name our Wheaties crew.
Lone Ranger
Big Ted Kluszewski's in there too. He'll face those hurlers day or night and knock their fast balls out of sight. Bob Feller and Ted Kliszewski both know that Wheaties magic. There's a whole kernel of wheat in every Wheaties flake.
Narrator
Wheaties breakfast of champions. Keep on eating your Wheaties and you'll.
Lone Ranger
Be do do do an okay. Ooh.
Narrator
Now to continue. Inside the one room house of miser marks, the Lone Ranger and Tonto saw that the windows were closely shuttered. They lighted a candle. Their search revealed nothing out of order. No sign of a robbery there.
Lone Ranger
Ladder that lead through ceiling. There's probably a loft above this room now look up there.
Narrator
Meanwhile, the moon had set and the three killers rode in darkness toward the small house. Seeing the light beneath the door, they drew rein left their Horses and advanced on foot. Jake found a loose slat in one of the window shutters. Looking inside, he said, hey, I see the same engine. I chased away from the boulders.
Chumba
He's found a loose rock in the fireplace. We'll go in fast. Come on.
Narrator
Don't move, huh?
Chumba
All right, Jake, take his gas.
Lone Ranger
Right. Why?
Chumba
I'll ask the questions. What are you doing here, Injun? Me? Come look around. We saw you poking around the fireplace. You came to rob the owner of this place, didn't you? No, that's not true.
Lone Ranger
Here's some rope, Carter.
Chumba
Good time, then. Keep an eye on him while we get what we came for. Right.
Bartesian Host
Now.
Lone Ranger
Give me your hands, Injun. He pulled a loose stone out of the fireplace.
Chumba
I'll see if there's anything behind it.
Lone Ranger
Hey, maybe that's the old man's hiding place.
Chumba
Yeah.
Lone Ranger
Find anything?
Chumba
Yeah. Say, look. Paper, money, packet, somebody.
Lone Ranger
Great day. Must be a fortune. Here. We're rich. No.
Chumba
You're not mad.
Lone Ranger
Hold it. Don't try for a gun. Where'd you come from? I was watching the door. I came down the ladder from the attic. Stand over there, all three of you. Keep your hands high.
Chumba
Yeah, it should.
Lone Ranger
Hold your hands toward me, Todd. I'll cut that rope.
Chumba
Hey, listen, my student. We're all in the same game there.
Lone Ranger
Toto, disarm those men.
Chumba
Ah, you came here for the cash, and so did we. Why can't we make a deal?
Lone Ranger
Why should I make a deal? Here. Guns. Put them on the table, Toto. Then take that cash.
Chumba
Listen, mister, it'll be worthwhile to split that money with us. I fixed it so as none of us will be suspected for the robbery.
Lone Ranger
You better listen to Crowder.
Chumba
You'll never get away with stealing that money. Sheriff Craig will get you for sure unless you cut us in.
Lone Ranger
What can you do to earn a share of the cash?
Chumba
I'll tell you when we're partners.
Lone Ranger
You're covered, Sheriff Creek and his deputy. Drop that gunner. I'll shoot you, too, Indian. We'd better obey, Toto.
Chumba
Say, Sheriff, you and your deputy saved our lives. That Mashman and the Indian were going to kill us.
Lone Ranger
What are you and your pals doing here, Crowder?
Chumba
Well, we were riding by and saw the police lighted. That made us curious because it's not like marks to waste candles. We looked through the busted shutter and saw those two stealing that bundle of cash from behind the fireplace rock. We came in, but they got the drop on us.
Lone Ranger
Sounds reasonable. It sounds very convincing, Sheriff. But the truth is, Crowder and His friends planned to steal John Mark's money. That's what I'd expect you to claim, mister.
Chumba
Should I handcuff him, Sheriff?
Lone Ranger
Yes. I'll keep him covered.
Chumba
What brought you here, Sheriff?
Lone Ranger
Mark's horse came into town. I wondered what had happened to the old man. Brought my deputy with me to investigate. Here's the bracelets, mister. Stick out your hands.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger seemed submissive. He held his hands toward the deputy, then suddenly lunged forward. You gave the deputy a hard shove.
Lone Ranger
Look out.
Narrator
And sent him staggering against the sheriff.
Lone Ranger
You take this.
Narrator
At the same instant, Tahoe leaped into action. He drove a fist to the chin of the off balance sheriff. While the Lone Ranger swung a fist to the deputy's chin. Both lawmen were on the floor, unconscious. The masked man, moving quickly, picked up.
Lone Ranger
His gun and said, we're taking this cash, Crowder, but I want to talk to you before we leave.
Chumba
What do you want?
Lone Ranger
Before the sheriff came, he said something about a plan.
Chumba
Yes?
Lone Ranger
Is it too late for your plan to do us any good?
Chumba
My plan will still be worth a lot to you, mister.
Lone Ranger
Room 9 at the Roper City Hotel. Come at midnight. If you think you have something worth half this money, you're all right. You'll find I'm dangerous if you try a double cross.
Chumba
Don't worry, mister. I'm on your side.
Narrator
Leaving the Miser's house, the Lone Ranger and T. Hurried into the woods, mounted their horses and rode away.
Chumba
Get them off.
Narrator
It was an easy matter for the masked man to enter a rear door of the hotel and reach the first floor room without being seen in the room. He and Toto were alert and expectant. At midnight.
Lone Ranger
Stand to one side, Toto, and cover me while I open the door.
Chumba
You ready?
Lone Ranger
Hello, Carly.
Chumba
Howdy. Still masked, huh?
Lone Ranger
Come in.
Chumba
Yeah. Howdy. Engine oh.
Lone Ranger
Where are your friends?
Chumba
In the cafe next door.
Lone Ranger
You said you had a plan.
Chumba
I have. You see, I had another gent all framed to take the rat for the robbery.
Lone Ranger
Oh.
Chumba
Oh, I'm not telling until I have my hands on half that cash.
Lone Ranger
You'll have to do a lot more talking before you even see the money.
Chumba
All right, I'll tell you some more. I dressed in a fancy disguise and gave an old fellow $50 to hold my horse for 10 minutes. I knew he'd spend the cash free and easy and make the sheriff suspicious he did just that.
Lone Ranger
What has that to do with the Marks robbery?
Chumba
The sheriff thinks the old fellow's explanation of how he got the money mighty thin. If he has any Idea the critter had a hand in Robin Mark's. He'll search his place there. He'll find more of Mark's money and all of Mark's bonds.
Lone Ranger
A frame up, huh?
Chumba
Yeah, and a good one.
Lone Ranger
Did you have that all set before you went to Mark's house to steal the rest of his money?
Chumba
Sure. By sacrificing the bonds and cash Mark's had in his pocket. We'd get away clear with all the hoarded cash.
Lone Ranger
I don't see how your plan helps me. The sheriff thinks top of my are the thieves.
Chumba
The sheriff doesn't know it yet, but there were two crimes.
Lone Ranger
Two? Sure.
Chumba
Stealing the cash at Mark's house was the second. The first was when Marks was on his way home from town. That's when we killed him and robbed him of the bonds.
Lone Ranger
Killed?
Chumba
Yeah. You see, that's a hanging crime. Oh, that's the one. The old man will pay for the bonds in his possession. Will convict him for sure.
Lone Ranger
Well, Trotter, now I have a story to tell.
Chumba
Make it short.
Lone Ranger
All right. When the sheriff returned to town, he found me waiting to talk to him.
Chumba
What?
Lone Ranger
I showed him credentials that convinced him I was no thief. He then agreed to come here and listen to what you had to say.
Chumba
Come here?
Lone Ranger
Yes. He and his deputy have been sitting in the adjoining room just beyond that partly open door. They heard all you said. Well, you double crush, I'll kill you. Good work, mister. I hoped you'd be able to avoid gun play.
Chumba
You hit him plenty hard on Chin.
Lone Ranger
Here's his gun, Sheriff. Thanks. Put the handcuffs on him, Deputy.
Chumba
Right. I reckon he won't trick me like the mask man did.
Lone Ranger
So take him to jail, then go to the cafe and get his palsy.
Narrator
Later that night, the sheriff and his deputy sat in the jail office.
Lone Ranger
That reminds me, Sheriff.
Chumba
The masked man showed you papers that.
Narrator
Made you sure he's no crook.
Lone Ranger
Yeah.
Narrator
Did the papers tell who he is?
Lone Ranger
They didn't give his name, but they identified him as the Lone Ranger.
Narrator

Host: Andrew Rhines
Release Date: December 13, 2024
In this episode of Old Time Radio Westerns, host Andrew Rhines invites listeners to immerse themselves in a classic Lone Ranger adventure titled "Sword of Honor." The episode, digitally restored for enhanced audio clarity, transports audiences back to the golden age of radio Westerns, capturing the essence of timeless tales from the Wild West.
[02:18] Introduction of Conflict: The episode opens with a vivid description of the Lone Ranger and his trusty horse, Silver, setting the stage for an adventure filled with suspense and action. The narrator emphasizes the Lone Ranger’s role as a champion of justice, highlighting his commitment to maintaining law and order in the Wild West.
[05:16] The Plot Unfolds: John Marks, known as Miser Marks, lives a solitary life in southern Oklahoma. During one of his rare trips to town for supplies, he encounters three men—Chumba, Crowder, and Jake—who ambush him. Chumba threatens Marks, demanding his bonds under the guise of a robbery. Marks, unarmed and unsuspecting, becomes the target of their scheme to steal his bonds and frame him for murder.
[07:01] The Gang's Scheme: Chumba reveals their meticulous plan to use Marks’ bonds to falsely accuse him of murder, ensuring that the sheriff wrongly suspects them instead. Their strategy involves planting evidence and setting up a scenario that would implicate Marks, allowing them to abscond with his hoarded cash.
[09:08] Tonto's Discovery: Meanwhile, Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s faithful companion, stumbles upon suspicious activity near the Big Boulders. He encounters Jake, one of the outlaws, who is visibly armed. Tonto’s cautious approach leads him to report the suspicious behavior, prompting the Lone Ranger to investigate further.
[10:15] Gathering Intelligence: As the Lone Ranger secretly observes a conversation between Chumba and his gang, he uncovers their intentions to frame Marks for the robbery. The Lone Ranger decides to act swiftly to prevent the unfolding injustice, realizing the depth of the antagonists' deceit.
[14:55] Confrontation at Mark's House: The Lone Ranger and Tonto arrive at Miser Marks’ house, only to find it locked and seemingly untouched. Their search uncovers nothing unusual initially, but Chumba and his gang soon infiltrate the house under the cover of darkness, attempting to steal the hidden cash.
[20:15] The Showdown: Inside the house, the Lone Ranger confronts Chumba and his men. A tense standoff ensues, with Chumba attempting to negotiate a deal to split the stolen money. The Lone Ranger, asserting his authority, commands the outlaws to disarm. A physical altercation breaks out when the Lone Ranger subdues Sheriff Creek and his deputy, incapacitating them to prevent interference.
[23:07] The Twist: Chumba reveals the intricacies of their plan to frame Marks, including the staged robbery and the killing of Marks to eliminate any witness. Sensing the depth of betrayal and deceit, the Lone Ranger devises a counter-plan to expose Chumba and his gang, ensuring that justice prevails.
[26:16] Resolution: In a dramatic turn, the Lone Ranger presents evidence to Sheriff Creek, proving the true nature of the crime and unveiling Chumba’s deceitful tactics. The outlaws are apprehended, and Marks’ innocence is restored. The Lone Ranger’s quick thinking and unwavering sense of justice save the day, reaffirming his role as the guardian of the frontier.
"Sword of Honor" masterfully weaves a tale of deception, bravery, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Through the Lone Ranger’s heroic actions and Tonto’s unwavering support, the story underscores the timeless virtues of honor and righteousness. As the episode concludes, listeners are left with a profound appreciation for the Lone Ranger's enduring legacy as a symbol of justice in the Wild West.
