Narrator
A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty Hio. Silver the Lone Ranger. With his faithful Indian companion, Tahoe, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again.
Sam
Mount Silver. That will be called Hail Silver.
Roger Garrett
Hooray.
Narrator
The terms of John Colby's will made Roger Garrett the executor of his estate and guardian of 17 year old Kay Colby. Garrett was the Indian agent for the district, but after John's death, he also took over the management of the Colby Ranch and spent as much time there as he did at the agency in town. One afternoon he was working in the ranch office when the door opened and Kaye entered.
Kay Colby
Roger May at Mary Gage.
Roger Garrett
Now, where would your foreman be at this time of day? Out on the range, I suppose.
Kay Colby
But he isn't. I've just been talking with Shorty. I'm afraid he's gone to town.
Roger Garrett
Afraid? Why afraid? Why shouldn't he go to town if he wants to?
Kay Colby
I'm afraid he's gone to pick a fight with Derek Forbes.
Roger Garrett
What about me?
Kay Colby
I made a big mistake, Roger. I told Larry that Derek had asked me to marry him. And Mr. Gage has a ridiculous notion that Derek is a fortune hunter or worse, simply because he's an instrument.
Roger Garrett
Derek's the best assistant I ever had in the agency. He's a fine lawyer design.
Kay Colby
Of course he is. I'd better go after Larry.
Roger Garrett
You'd better let me do that.
Kay Colby
No, you're busy, Roger. I can handle Larry. And don't worry about it. I'll bring him back.
Roger Garrett
Wait just a moment. What? You say Derek has asked you to marry him. Have you given him an answer?
Kay Colby
I'm thinking about it.
Roger Garrett
I wouldn't let Larry's prejudice against Easterners influence you.
Kay Colby
I don't intend to. I'll see you. At present.
Narrator
Larry Gage, the husky young foreman of the Colby Ranch, searched the town until he found Derek Forbes in the Palace Cafe. He hitched up his gun belt and started for the table where the easterner was sitting.
Roger Garrett
Well, hello, Larry. What's the matter? Do you have any gestures? You might call it dead. Why don't you hire a new cook? Isn't food that bothers me.
Sam
It's people.
Roger Garrett
You in particular. It isn't funny, the sight of this town. Seen enough of you. It's time you were moving on. You're sure you're the one to decide that? I have a shoot nine here that says I am. Oh, just a great big bad man. You speak your piece, all right, Larry. But you don't have the face to go with the words. Somehow you don't scare me at all. 24 hours, Forbes. If I see you around after that, I'll let you have it. Is it because of Kay you want me to leave? It sure is. But she doesn't want me to go. She's only 17. She doesn't know what she wants. Meaning that if she had any sense, she'd want to marry you instead of me? I didn't say that. You're a good foreman, Larry, but you're not. Kaye's guardian, Roger Garrett, is the only one who has the right to tell me to keep away from the ranch. He hasn't, and neither has Kay. Till they do, I'll keep on paying my respects. Remember, I've warned you. Sure, and I'm calling your bluff. Kay doesn't want me to leave, and neither does Roger. He needs me at the agency. I think you're a crook. Because I'm an Eastern? Be honest, Larry. You don't like me because Kay and I are going to be married.
Kay Colby
That's a lie.
Roger Garrett
No, it isn't. I called you a liar. Now I'm supposed to go for my gun. Oh, no, Larry. I know you can outdraw me. We'll leave our guns with Joe and settle that outside.
Narrator
That suits me.
Roger Garrett
Hurt your face. The only one of you going outside, that's Larry. Hello, Sheriff.
Sam
Howdy. You hear me, lad?
Roger Garrett
You got no call to interfere. I'm preserving the peace.
Sam
What's more, there's a lady with nuts that way.
Roger Garrett
Hey, Mary. Looks like her and sounds like her.
Narrator
And she's hopping mad.
Roger Garrett
She is. Tell her that I haven't forgotten her invitation to supper, Larry. Tell her I'll be there.
Kay Colby
Did you drive in the timeshare?
Roger Garrett
I did. Now I'm delivering the prisoner into your custody, kid.
Kay Colby
Thank you.
Roger Garrett
Always glad to oblige you, Larry.
Kay Colby
You did come here to pick a fight with Derek.
Roger Garrett
You can't marry him, Kay. He's a crook.
Kay Colby
You're a Local?
Roger Garrett
I won't stand by and let him get away with it.
Kay Colby
I haven't given him my answer yet. But when? In the name of common sense will you stop trying to run my life?
Roger Garrett
But you're only 17.
Kay Colby
I have a guardian appointed by law, and his name isn't Larry Gage. If you don't behave yourself, I'll have Roger fire you.
Roger Garrett
Wouldn't be there.
Kay Colby
I wouldn't want to. I miss you. I shall if you make it necessary.
Sam
I.
Roger Garrett
I guess I have any rights.
Kay Colby
None at all.
Roger Garrett
Eric said he hadn't forgotten your invitation to the office.
Kay Colby
He's a fit.
Roger Garrett
Maybe you'd like to wait and ride out with him.
Kay Colby
No prisoner was released into my custody. I climb aboard your bron and let him stop. Get up.
Roger Garrett
Go on, get up.
Narrator
Larry was silent all through supper that night, and when it was over, he started for the bunk house. But Roger stopped him and asked him to step into the office to go over some business details. Just as they were sitting down, a shot rang out from the distance.
Roger Garrett
What's that? Probably one of the boys taking a potshot at a cow. I hear you wanted to go in for some gun play this afternoon. Did Eric tell you about it?
Sam
Yeah.
Roger Garrett
I've given Kay my promise to behave. That's why I understand how you feel. Of course, you're in love with Kay, too. Am I? Of course you are. But after all, if Kay likes Derek, do you trust him? What a question. He works for me at the agency. Of course I trust him. He's a good man and very smart. Oh, I don't doubt that. And if you were smart, you'd treat him differently. After all, he may be your boss someday. There are other ranches in the West, Rodney. Well, that's the way you feel about it. Now, what I wanted to ask you about is the 2,000 head we bought from the Pothook. Where are they? The valley south of Raccoon. Don't you go buying any more steers right here. Why not? Man alive, you bought 5,000 head this summer at a very low price. And it was so convenient to have them driven up with a cat like walk for the Indians. I granted, pretty close to being overstocked right now. And who as Indian agent? Why don't you fill some of your government requisitions? I can't, Larry. This ranch doesn't belong to me. I. I just run it. What would people think if I used my position as a government agent to make money for K. Colby? Oh, I'll continue to buy the Indian beef And the potter? We'll sell ours in Kansas City. Listen. Drums. Probably some ceremony to reservation. And ours. He Smith closes the reservation. The wind must be blowing. Mr. Redding. I heard him say. What is it, Cave? Something wrong? Shorty here. I think I just saw a bandit. A bandit?
Kay Colby
A masked man on a big white horse.
Roger Garrett
There was an Indian with him, too. Where, Shorty? Where'd you see him? Near the woods, up on the rise. The moon was shining full on their faces and I had a good look at them. Shot at them?
Sam
Yeah.
Roger Garrett
Then they ducked into the woods. Shall I get the boys together and go after them?
Sam
That's not necessary.
Roger Garrett
What said that?
Narrator
At the sound of the new voice, everyone turned. The Lone Ranger was standing in the doorway leading to the dark kitchen. His guns were drawn.
Roger Garrett
That's the masked man I saw.
Sam
I wouldn't advise any of you to go through your guns.
Roger Garrett
What do you want?
Sam
One of you is Roger Garrett. I am the Union agent for this territory.
Roger Garrett
Yes? How did you get in here?
Sam
Through the kitchen window. I have a message for you, Garrett. A message? Bad news. The chief and all his braves have left the reservation.
Roger Garrett
What?
Sam
They're camped in the hill just above the valley. Those are war drums you hear.
Kay Colby
Why, he's on the warp.
Sam
He camped them. You've never had any trouble with the tribe before?
Kay Colby
No, never.
Sam
Can you think of any reason why they should leave the reservation, Garret?
Roger Garrett
Not one. There must be some mistake.
Sam
Not about what I told you.
Roger Garrett
I'm not accustomed to taking the word of a man with a mask. Maybe not. Roger, would an outlaw take a chance on coming here if there weren't some real danger of a massacre? I intend to investigate.
Sam
That's all I ask.
Kay Colby
He's gone.
Roger Garrett
Shall I go after him, boss? No, no. He's done us a great service. Let him go. How do you mean? To investigate, Roger. I'm going to see White Eagle alone. The Indians know I represent the Great White Father. They wouldn't dare touch me alone. I'll be perfectly safe. I'll leave it to you, Larry, to see the town and the other ranchers are warned. You hear that masked man riding away? Silver called his horse Silver Mass. Man on a white horse with an injured partner. He must be the Lone Ranger.
Narrator
When Roger Garrett rode into the hills, the Lone Ranger and Toto followed him, but cautiously, making sure they wouldn't be seen. Fresh hoof prints were enough to mark the trail for Toto. And it soon became obvious that the agent was heading for the sound of his runs below. Ranger and Toto Reached the ridge above the Indian encampment in time to see Garrett guiding his mob down the slope straight toward the dancing warriors.
Sam
In a frail white eagle that's sure they see him. They stop the dance.
Roger Garrett
They understand. They mean they're not Apache. Not like Apache and peaceful.
Sam
Garrett may be able to straighten out the trouble, whatever it is. I wish I could hear what they're saying.
Roger Garrett
White Eagle makes plenty signs when he talks. He understands what chief says. What Chief says tribe hungry. What more beast from great white father hungry. Ah. Say Indian stars cannot get more be kill white man take thee.
Sam
Garrett's answering them.
Roger Garrett
Not use scientific talk. You must know what they mean.
Sam
Well, if it's only a question of food, that should be easily settled.
Roger Garrett
Do you not like what Garrett says? And plenty mad.
Sam
Doesn't he realize he must give them some sort of a promise? We're a few extra head of cattle if they'll prevent bloodshed.
Roger Garrett
Garrett's right way. Now we need to go for guns.
Sam
They're all piled up in front of the chief's teepee. Open fire tunnel. We'll try to cover Garrett. Another volume out. Arranged. Now I want to talk with him. Kumasabi.
Roger Garrett
That's good idea.
Sam
It's in his power to stop this uprising. Why didn't he?
Roger Garrett
And he's praying.
Sam
Come on.
Roger Garrett
Tell them.
Narrator
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger adventure before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments.
Sam
Sam.
Narrator
Now to continue. The Lone Ranger and Topple followed Roger Garrett down from the hills. When he reached the rolling rangeland, it soon became evident that he was heading straight for town. The masked man and the Indian urged Silver and Scout to their greatest speed. Swiftly they overtook the Indian agent's mount and the Lone Ranger called on him to stop.
Sam
Wait a minute.
Roger Garrett
Last man. You've been following me.
Sam
We were on the ridge above the Indian encampments when you talked with White Eagle. They covered your retreat.
Roger Garrett
It did. I heard shots, but I thought it was the Indians shooting at me.
Sam
We managed to stop them from reaching their guns until you were out of range.
Roger Garrett
See?
Sam
You didn't have much success with your conference.
Roger Garrett
No, there was no reasoning with them. They refused to stay on the reservation any longer. They mean to take over the valley.
Sam
Never mind.
Roger Garrett
The whole tribe's gone for search. That's the only explanation. There's only one way to deal with them. Will you answer a question, Mrs.
Sam
If I can.
Roger Garrett
Are you the Lone Ranger? That's right. I thought so. Will you help us out?
Sam
In what way.
Roger Garrett
Will you ride to Fort Tamarack and bring the troops?
Sam
It couldn't get here in less than two days.
Roger Garrett
We'll try to hold out until then.
Sam
You're sure there's no other way to handle the situation?
Roger Garrett
Absolutely none. The tribe must be destroyed.
Sam
I see. Well, Toto and I'll do our best. May depend on it.
Roger Garrett
Thanks. That's fine. Now I'll have to get going. Get up there. Get along.
Sam
No, Toto.
Roger Garrett
All Indian want is feed.
Sam
I'm wondering why Garrett wouldn't admit that. They must find out.
Roger Garrett
Want me go into town, find out what he'll do.
Sam
Now we'll both go. Come on, Hillary.
Narrator
The lights go. As the Lone Ranger and Tuttle rode through the back streets of the town. Finally, they reached the alley in the rear of the sheriff's office. There was a great crowd in the main street. The masked man and the Indian dismounted. He crept along the side of the building until they could hear what was going on. Roger Garrett was speaking to the man.
Roger Garrett
Quiet. Quiet down. Mary. I want you to listen to those drugs. They started again. That means a fight. I went up there to parlay with the chief. I tried to find out what was wrong. I offered them anything they wanted to go back to the reservation. The chiefs told me what they wanted. Our lives and our land. You may wonder what suddenly got into this crime. I'll tell you. There's a renegade white man around here. He wears a mask and rides a big white horse. He's the one who's responsible for this rebellion. If you ever see him, shoot the kill.
Narrator
That's enough, Toto.
Roger Garrett
What you do now?
Sam
I want to find out just how much beef the Indians have been getting. The record should be in the agency office. Try to get in from the rear.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Tottle led Silver and Scout down the alley to the rear of the Indian agency. The last man tried one of the looms.
Sam
Good luck. It's oh, the officers who drunk shades of drawing. That helps. That cabinet must be where the papers are filed. Let me have your hunting knife. Force it open. Thanks.
Roger Garrett
You must have somebody at front door.
Narrator
Into the back room. The lone ratinger left the door open a little and watched as Derek Forbes entered the office. After lighting a lamp, Forbes went to the cabinet, unlocked it and took out some papers. Then he went to the desk and sat down. He examined the paper on the top of the pile, took a pen, dipped it in the ink and bent over the paper. Swiftly the Lone Ranger entered the room.
Sam
Hey, I'll take that paper. Keep him covered.
Roger Garrett
Give me that receipt.
Sam
Yes, A receipt for cattle. A receipt with white eagle's mark on it. Pothook brand. 1000 head. But the ink on the last zero isn't dry. You've just changed this receipt from a hundred head to a thousand. Take a look at these others. 100, 100, 100, 500. Ahead. To feed all those engines for six months. No wonder they're starving.
Roger Garrett
You say Pothook brand, Timothy.
Sam
Yes, Toto.
Roger Garrett
There are plenty of pothooks here on Kobe range.
Sam
That's true. I remember seeing them.
Roger Garrett
Now what are you going to do?
Sam
Investigate this cabinet a little further. Looking for some bills of sale? Yes, here they are. Steers bought and paid for by this agency. Not hundreds of head, but thousands. Well, that's the answer. The government agent, Garrett bought thousands of head of cattle, delivered a few hundred, headed the Indians, had the rest driven to the Colby ranch. Manager of the Colby ranch. He paid for them. The money didn't go into the agency account. It went into Garrett's own pocket. The Indians have been cheated, the government has been cheated and K. Colby has paid good money for stolen cattle.
Roger Garrett
You have it all figured out, huh? Practically.
Sam
Only need a look at the Colby ledgers. Garrett's private bank book to prove my case. The bank books are not there. Yes, it is. We see April 15, May, June. Nice haul for Garrett.
Roger Garrett
This won't do you any good. You better forget those papers and get out of town.
Sam
I'm taking the papers and the bank book with me.
Roger Garrett
You've been branded a renegade. If anyone sees you, they'll shoot.
Sam
Make sure that you don't interfere with our getting away.
Narrator
When Roger Garrett and the sheriff entered the agency office a few minutes later, they found Derek Forbes lying on the floor, bound and gagged. When the gag had been removed and his ropes cut.
Roger Garrett
Derek, what happened? The masked man was here. Broke into that cabinet and took a lot of paper. Well, don't worry. We'll get him. I have a posse all set to ride.
Narrator
But the lone range you're on were well on their way to the Colby ranch. There they found Kay and Larry Gage at the ranch house. One close look at the mighty silver and the girl and the foreman were absolutely sure of the masked man's identity. They invited him in and he showed them the papers he had brought from the agency. Then together they examined the ranch ledges.
Sam
Yes. You paid for all the cattle you received, Ms. Colby. The money went to Garrett.
Roger Garrett
So Roger is a crook.
Kay Colby
And you were right about Derek all along.
Roger Garrett
Question is, what do we do now?
Sam
The first thing is to stop the Indians from raiding the valley.
Roger Garrett
How?
Sam
By giving them their rightful property. The pothooks tears you're grazing.
Kay Colby
I certainly don't want them if they.
Roger Garrett
Don'T belong to me.
Sam
You may be able to get your money back later on from Garrett. Now we must move past. Larry, how long will it take you to round up the herd and get it moving toward the reservation?
Roger Garrett
An hour or so. None of the boys are going to bed. I can have them in the saddle in 10 minutes.
Sam
Toto, if you could tell the chief the herd was on its way. Could you persuade him to hold his graves in check?
Roger Garrett
Only quite.
Sam
We can depend on you, Larry.
Roger Garrett
Sure thing.
Sam
All right. Let's go, Toto.
Narrator
Once more the Lone Ranger and Tahoe will reign on the ridge above the Indian Encounter Otah.
Sam
Dance near the altar.
Roger Garrett
And start out on raid plenty soon.
Sam
Then we can't waste any time. We must ride straight into camp.
Roger Garrett
Maybe them see us before when we help Garrett get away.
Sam
The chance we must take. As soon as the light from the fire hits us, we raise our hands with a sign of peace. Head straight to the keep there. Come.
Narrator
At the sight of the Lone Ranger and Taco, some of the Indians went for their guns. The chief stopped them.
Roger Garrett
No. Do not. Why you come here? Mask friend bring good news. You talk me not listen to white man no more.
Sam
Because of the way Garrett has treated you. Whitey Goose. You mustn't blame anyone but Garrett for what's happened. The great white father bought plenty of cattle for you. But Garrett stole it to be punished for that. Indians want beef. The Great white father wants you to have beef. The cowboys are starting a drive now. By morning you'll have 5,000 head. What are they saying, Totto?
Roger Garrett
Another brave country. Maybe this trick. How we know you speak fool.
Sam
Give us a few hours. You'll be able to see for yourself.
Roger Garrett
White Eagle hell brave wake till dawn.
Sam
Hell not here.
Roger Garrett
Then be tight.
Sam
We'll make sure it's here. Back to the ranch, fellow. Let's do this.
Narrator
Once again, the Lone Ranger and Cottle raced down the hill trail to the rangeland. As they headed for the ranch, Larry and his men were starting their drive. But Roger Garrett and Derek Forbes had guessed the Lone Ranger might pay the ranch a visit and persuaded the sheriff and his posse to ride out there. They caught sight of the cowboys south of Rock Canyon.
Roger Garrett
Those cattle are on the move. Rustlers. Rustlers nothing. Those are your own men. That's Larry on the sorrel. I Still say rustlers. Larry have no orders for me to move that herd. Even shows they're guarding him straight off Colbyland. I want you to stop them, Sheriff. Arrest them if you have to. Hold up there, Larry. What do you want, Sheriff? Stop hazing those steers, boys. Ain't no attention. Keep moving, boys. I give the orders around here. Not anymore, you don't. Arrest him, Sheriff. This herd belongs to the engines and we're driving it up the reservation. Do what? Did the masked man persuade you to do that? He sure did. Dirty renegade. Renegade nothing. He's the Lone Ranger.
Sam
Lone Ranger?
Roger Garrett
A renegade and an outlaw. He started the uprising. He broke into the agency over. I know he did, and I just wish I had the papers he took from there. Yes, it's these two who are crushed. I'm telling you, this turd belongs to the Injuns. And the Roger Sheriff stole it. What do you say? That's true. The only reason the Injuns are gone on the wall path is that they're hungry. Roger, it isn't true. They want scalp and the masked man is their leader. Here he comes. Straight toward us. $1,000 to the man who killed him. Don't let him shoot, Sheriff. It's a lone Ranger. Look at his horse. That's silver. The engine on the paint behind him, that's Tonneau. Hold your fire, Forbes. Not a chance. I've got him dead in my sights. Go.
Narrator
Before Derek could squeeze the trigger, the Lone Ranger fired. And the bullet caught the Easterner in the right forearm.
Roger Garrett
Good shot, mister. Don't shoot. Trying it and tearing. I've got you covered.
Sam
Sheriff. I know you think I'm an outlaw.
Roger Garrett
Not anymore I don't.
Sam
Please believe me. Then if this herd doesn't reach the Indians before dawn, there'll be a massacre.
Roger Garrett
You got any proof that Garrett's been starving the engines to man his own puggies?
Sam
Yes, Sheriffs, this bank book and these papers read them all. Let's get the herd moving.
Roger Garrett
Go to it. Come on, boys. One, two. There. Sheriff, the mask. Graham's absolutely wrong about me stealing. Certainly. Those papers don't prove anything. They do, Bill. Not a thing. Well, I'm not a smart lawyer like you. I'm not a smart thief like you, Gab. But I am smart enough to lock you both up until I can turn you over to the United States Marshal. And don't talk to me about these papers. They're proof positive. They tell the whole story of an ornery scheme that might have ended up in a mass. Garret if it hadn't been for the lonely age.
