Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Totto, stopping at Port Apache, talked with their friend Colonel Adams, whom they'd assisted in the past. Their conversation turned to Saul Castle, army deserter and outlaw leader whom the government still hunted. The Lone Ranger said, colonel, it's my
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
guess that Castle's changed his name and settled in some remote place.
Paul Ricker
Castle wouldn't have to move to a
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
remote place to escape discovery.
Paul Ricker
It's I'll Wager There aren't 10 persons in the west who ever saw Castle face to face.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
I know I haven't.
The Lone Ranger
Nor have I.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Still, I didn't realize so few people had ever seen him. Well, figure it out.
Paul Ricker
The men who served with him in
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
the army were either killed in a war or have been discharged and gone home.
Paul Ricker
Indians who ride with them in gang then get killed by soldiers.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
You're right, Kano.
Paul Ricker
But fortunately we still have one man here at the fort who served with Castle and who'll be able to identify
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
him if Castle's ever caught.
The Lone Ranger
Who is the soldier, Colonel?
Paul Ricker
Sergeant Olson.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
You know him? He's head of my scout.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger had guessed right. Castle assumed the name Harry Kinlan and bought a ranch near the cattle town of Linville. As the town thrived, so did Harry Kinlon. He and Paul Ricker, who acted as his ranch foreman, rode into town one morning and after attending to some business, both went to the Trails End Cafe. They were drinking when suddenly Castle, alias Kindlen, gagged on his drink and turned away from the bar. Ricker stared.
Paul Ricker
Oh, you're shaking and Spilling your drink?
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
What's the matter? I've got to turn my head away. You see that ombre at the end of the bar? One in the gray hat? Yeah. He's looking this way. Who is he? Somebody who know him? Yeah, a rat named Griffin. We did time together in the army. Still kid? He's a double crosser who'd sell his mother. Turn around now or you're leaving. Old love.
Narrator
Rotten luck.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Tip. Look at the rat. He's turned around. He's staring back here again. Yeah, he knows you're all right. You can tell rigor. Be casual. Go out that side door so nobody will notice you get that umbrel. All right, boss. Don't let him get to the sheriff. Hurry. Don't worry. I'll come back.
Narrator
Ten minutes passed before Kinlin heard shots in the street outside the cafe. The cafe emptied as customers and help ran into the street where a man lay sprawled in front of the telegraph office across the roadway. Then the side door opened and Paul Ricker, smiling, walked to where the man called Kinlan stood alone.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
I took care of the horses, boss. Good. Took care of your friend, too. Nice work. He didn't get to the sheriff. Went direct from here to the telegraph office. I didn't get him till he came out. What? But what's the matter? Nobody saw me. Maybe not. I know why he went to the telegraph office instead of the sheriff.
Narrator
Why?
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
He didn't want to split with the sheriff on the rewards the government's offered for me. But he got in touch with the army. Ah, you don't know that. Maybe he didn't recognize you at all. You saw him look at me. You know I did. I'd better make sure. I'm gonna stay close to the sheriff the rest of the day. Then I'm going to ask questions.
Narrator
Sheriff Tom Hammond, newly elected, had respect for the ranch owners of Linville, including the one known as Harry Kinlan. When late that day, Kinlan made seemingly casual inquiries, the unsuspecting sheriff confirmed the fact that the murdered Griffin had sent a wire to Fort Apache. Later, Kinlan told Paul Rickard.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Rickard, the sheriff told me the army sent an Ivan Olson here to identify me. Boss, if he saw you, would he be able to?
The Lone Ranger
Sure.
Narrator
Easier than Griffin.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
When I was in the army prison, Olson guarded me every day. Well, there's only one way a person can get into this town if he rides from Fort Apache. That's by the Hill Trail. Yes or no? I also know it takes three days to get here, so. Ricky, three days from now we'll be hiding on the hill trail. We'll make sure that Olson never reaches Lindhill.
Narrator
That evening, the Lone Ranger and Tottle, while riding in the vicinity of Fort Apache, stopped there and met once more with Colonel Adams. The officer told them of the message from Linville and of Sergeant Olson's departure immediately after. He also told of receiving word of Griffin's murder. A few minutes later, the Lone Ranger and Toto streaked from the Fort Henson. Three days later, the Lone Ranger and Toto stopped along the trail.
The Lone Ranger
Tato, look. Someone's camped here recently. The campfire's still hot. Yes, it was Oldson. Tato, see there are army ration cans on the ground near the fire.
Paul Ricker
Him not too far ahead.
The Lone Ranger
Neither is Linville. Easy. This is our last chance to catch him.
Paul Ricker
Mon.
Narrator
That afternoon, in a clump of bushes at the side of the hill trail, Saul Castle and Paul Ricker saw a rider approaching.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Ricker's a soldier. Let me have those few glasses.
The Lone Ranger
All right,
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Josen. All right. Get your gun ready. All right. All set, you say, Wayne? All right. Fire.
Paul Ricker
Got him. Knocked him right out of the saddle.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Hey, Ricker, look. Coming from the east over the rise in the trail. Riders. Two of them.
Paul Ricker
What do we do? Shoot it out with him.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
I don't want to be seen or hurt. Turn around and let's get out of here.
Paul Ricker
Steady.
Narrator
Steady.
Paul Ricker
Get up.
Narrator
Get up.
Paul Ricker
One, two.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger and Tato had heard shots in the distance. As they neared a rise in the trail, they urged their horses to greater effort. And now, a few minutes later, they came to where a riderless horse stood beside the trail. A masked man and Indian dismounted quickly.
The Lone Ranger
Haru, there's an army blanket on the horse.
Paul Ricker
Listen. Kimasabi, Ryder, fall off in the ditch.
The Lone Ranger
Otto, look up there on top of the ridge. There are two men riding away toward town.
Paul Ricker
Me see him, Kim Sabi. Me not think them see us.
The Lone Ranger
It doesn't matter right now. Let's get this man from the ditch. It is Sergeant Olson.
Paul Ricker
Toddo him shot inside and shoulder.
The Lone Ranger
We didn't reach him soon enough to warn him, but perhaps we're in time to save.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger gave the soldier first aid and strapped him securely to an improvised stretcher. They fastened ropes to each side of the masked man's saddle and tied these to one end of the branches, leaving the other ends of the two branches resting on the road. When the horse moved slowly, it would pull the stretcher behind it easily and smoothly.
The Lone Ranger
There, Tanner. It'll take a little time, but I'll get him to town safely.
Paul Ricker
Ah. And what you want me to do?
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Kimasabe?
The Lone Ranger
Right up to the ridge, pick up the trail of those men we saw right away. Follow them.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Easy, stout.
Narrator
Easy fella.
Paul Ricker
Me do that? Maybe one of them Sol Castle.
The Lone Ranger
Yes. If that's so, the question is how did he know Sergeant Olson would come along this trail?
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Today we find out. Kimasabi.
Paul Ricker
Get him off Scout.
Narrator
We'll continue our Lone Ranger adventure in just a moment.

Narrator
Now to continue. Saul Castle and Paul Ricker, speeding along the ridge toward town, reached the top of a rise when suddenly. Ricker.
Paul Ricker
Look down the hill behind us. Somebody riding this way. Ho ho. Yeah, it's an engine. He must have been right behind us. I wonder.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Pull your horse over into the bushes. I'll do the same with mine.
Paul Ricker
Come on, get up there.
Narrator
Come. The two outlaws led their horses into the underbr seconds before Tonto reached the top of the rise.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Hey, boss.
Paul Ricker
Loki, stop him.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Now.
Paul Ricker
He's dismounted.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Yeah, he's walking back this way. Studying the ground.
Narrator
Tonto had stopped when unexpectedly he noticed no further sign of the hoofprints he'd been following. Now, near the underbrush, Paul Ricker stood before Tonto with drawn guns.
Paul Ricker
Raise your hands, Engine. Raise them high and fast.
Narrator
Ah, me rikers.
Paul Ricker
Now turn around. Oh, wow, Boss, you hit him before he even knew you were behind him. Want me to shoot him now?
Narrator
Oh.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Tie him up. We're gonna leave him here while you go to the sheriff with a story I have in mind. What?
Paul Ricker
But we don't know who he is, what he was up to.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
That doesn't matter. I have other ideas.
Paul Ricker
Hey, look. His horse is running away. It's going down towards the hill trail.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Let it go. It's not gonna change the story you'll tell the sheriff.
Paul Ricker
Story I'll tell the sheriff?
The Lone Ranger
Yeah.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Ricky, ride directly to the sheriff's office now. You'll be there in a half an hour. Tell the sheriff you were riding along the ridge when you found them in.
Narrator
Meanwhile, on the hill trail, the Lone Ranger was leading Sergeant Olson's horse while riding Silver, the great white horse dragging the improvised litter which bore the wounded man. About a mile from town, the Lone Ranger saw another riderless horse on the side of the hill that led to the ridge. His surprise gave way to deep concern when he saw the horse was Toto's scout. The masked man, sure that Sergeant Olson would not be in immediate danger, released the litter from the saddle, lowered it to the ground and placed a blanket beneath the soldier's head. He tied the army horse to a tree, then mounted Silver. He approached Scout, who readily followed the masked man and Silver to the top of the ridge. A short distance away, he heard A moan from the underbrush.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Taro, he's telling me.
The Lone Ranger
Full of Toto.
Narrator
He's tied. Don't try to talk.
The Lone Ranger
It's a nasty bump on your head. Let me cut these ropes.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Kimasabi.
Narrator
Somebody come lie there, Toto.
The Lone Ranger
I'll step behind this tree for a minute till I see you coming.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Hey, look, Sheriff, there are two horses
Paul Ricker
on the road down there. Never mind the two horses on the road. Let's see if. Hey, he's the Indian you told me about. Right, Sheriff. He's the one who did the shooting. I don't know what kind of a story he'll try to tell. Ricker, you said you had him tied up. Aren't any ropes on him? What? No. See for yourself.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Sure enough.
Paul Ricker
Well, whoever rode the white horse out on the road must have done it. Yes, but where is he?
The Lone Ranger
Right behind you, Sheriff.
Paul Ricker
Hey, that's a gun in my back.
The Lone Ranger
Yes, so you'll not reach for yours. Sheriff, let me get at that mask.
Paul Ricker
Here, let me take that gun. Let go of me, Injun. Let go. Fire. Me say me take. Now you stand next to Sheriff. Oh, my arm. All right, you two outlaws. Now what are you going to do?
The Lone Ranger
Turn around, Sheriff, and face me. Just don't reach for your gun till I ask you some questions and do some talking.
Paul Ricker
Show your mask. I should have guessed you would be.
The Lone Ranger
I'm not an outlaw, if that's what you mean. Neither is my friend Tonto, but Paul Ricker is.
Paul Ricker
Hey, who are you? How do you know who I am?
The Lone Ranger
Never mind who I am. I know who you are because I was in Cheyenne when Marshal Roberts arrested you and sent you to prison.
Paul Ricker
Ass man. You say Rick is an outlaw. Are you telling the truth?
The Lone Ranger
Look at his face, Sheriff. You'll know then that I am. Sheriff, he's lying.
Paul Ricker
These two hombres are trying to frame me so they can make a getaway.
The Lone Ranger
A getaway from what? Rickard.
Paul Ricker
Rickard told me this Indian shot someone who was riding on the hill trail, and that's not true.
Narrator
Sheriff.
Paul Ricker
Sheriff, I did see him. He was hiding behind a boulder a few miles from here. And when Sergeant Olson came riding along, this Indian shot him. Sergeant Olson? Now, wait, Ricker. You told me before you didn't know who it was the Indian shot. Did I say that? Yes, stranger. Olson was on his way to see me. His visit was supposed to be a secret.
The Lone Ranger
Well, evidently it wasn't. Sheriff, is true Sergeant Olson was shot? Tottenham and I were the first to reach him after the shooting.
Paul Ricker
Ah, we see two men right Way. Me follow him. This man one of them? Let them fool me, knock me out, leave me here. Who's the other man? There was none.
The Lone Ranger
The other man may have been Sol Castle, Sheriff.
Paul Ricker
No, no, that's not Sol. It was my boss.
The Lone Ranger
Keep talking, Ricker. You're getting your story all mixed up.
Paul Ricker
Yeah, you just said. Again, you.
The Lone Ranger
Who's your boss, Ricker? Saul Castle.
Paul Ricker
I know his boss. He works for rancher Harry Kinlon. Kinlan's.
The Lone Ranger
What's the matter, Sheriff?
Paul Ricker
I said no one knew Olson was coming. That's not so. I told Harry Kindling and Kinlon is Saul Castle.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
It adds up.
The Lone Ranger
That's how he knew Olson was coming here. He and Ricker waited.
Paul Ricker
Oh, masked man. You're lying. You're Saul Castle. Hey, Sheriff, that's it. Don't you see that? That's why he wears a mask. He's Saul Castle. I'm all mixed up. These two killed Olson.
The Lone Ranger
Olson's not dead.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Olson's not?
Paul Ricker
What did you say?
The Lone Ranger
He's alive. Not conscious, but alive. I left him lying on the ground below here on the hill trail when I came to free Totto.
Paul Ricker
Sheriff, he. He saw Castle.
The Lone Ranger
If I were, I'd have shot you and the sheriff by now. Sheriff, let's get Olson to a doctor. Take your hands down, but let Ricker keep his raised.
Paul Ricker
Thanks, stranger. I'm beginning to believe you.
The Lone Ranger
When Olson recovers, have him tell you which of your local citizens is Castle.
Paul Ricker
You never get the chance.
Narrator
Hey, Ricker, desperate with unreasoning fury, suddenly leaped backward and pulled the sheriff in front of him as a shield.
Paul Ricker
Hold still.
Narrator
At the same moment, his right hand slid to the sheriff's holster and withdrew the lawman's gun.
Paul Ricker
Go ahead, mask man. Shoot and you kill the sheriff.
The Lone Ranger
You can't get away, Ricker.
Narrator
No.
Paul Ricker
Well, watch now.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
I'll.
Paul Ricker
My wrist mash, man. You got him first. Hey, I'm hurt bad. Not as bad as you'll be hurt when they put a rope around your neck.
The Lone Ranger
Oh, Gotta bandage Wrecker, tie him up and take him down to the trail. Then follow us into town.
Paul Ricker
Stranger, come over here a minute, will you?
The Lone Ranger
Certainly.
Paul Ricker
Take it easy with you and get the lips broke.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Thanks.
Paul Ricker
Now, listen, Suppose killing his castle. What if Sergeant Olson dies and Ricker refuses to talk? How can we prove then that Kinman is Castle?
The Lone Ranger
Sheriff, on our way to town, I'll try to find the answer. Let's get the sergeant now and take
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
him to a doctor.
Narrator
It was dark when the men reached town, but though Sergeant Olson was still unconscious, The Lone Ranger and the sheriff decided upon a plan. Meantime, Saul Castle waited anxiously. He saw Sheriff Hammond enter and speak to a deputy at the who left immediately. Then the sheriff approached Saul with a smile on his face.
Paul Ricker
It's odd I should see you here at this time, Mr. Kinlan.
The Lone Ranger
Why?
Paul Ricker
Remember what I told you three days ago about a sergeant coming here to help locate Saul Castle?
The Lone Ranger
Yes.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Yes, I remember.
Paul Ricker
Well, he was shot on the hill
Narrator
trail before he got here.
Paul Ricker
We think Castle did it. Nobody knows it yet, but the answer to the entire Castle mystery is right in the bedroom of my house this very minute.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Is that so?
Paul Ricker
I must get a doctor to come to that fellow, but I'm going to leave him alone till I find out a few more things. I'll be seeing you, Mr. Kinlan.
Narrator
Kindlin left the cafe and saw the sheriff ride away in a direction opposite that of his home. Quickly, the anxious outlaw made his way through alleys until he came to the sheriff's home. There was no one in sight, only a light in a rear room. When Kinlan rapped on the door and received no response, he entered the house. He made his way through the front room and entered the lighted bedroom.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Hey.
The Lone Ranger
What?
Narrator
He saw a figure lying on the bed, handcuffed, and stopped in astonishment as he recognized Paul Rickard.
Paul Ricker
You. Yes, that's me. Where's Olson? The sheriff said he was here. Ricker, where's Olsen? I'm not sure. All I know is they brought me here. And I still don't know why you're
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
handcuffed and chained to the bed.
Paul Ricker
Well, I told you they brought me here. But, boss, why are you here? They figured out that you were Saul Castle. What? Who has mask man now? The sheriff. Mask man's a friend of the engine that you knocked out. And he's found Olson, too. He seems to have the right answer to everything.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Do they know it was you who killed Griffin the other day?
The Lone Ranger
No, but we know now.
Paul Ricker
Boss, the closet. Why, you. Oh, you missed, Castle. But you didn't, stranger.
The Lone Ranger
You got him thrown in the arm.
Paul Ricker
He'll live to die on the gallows of the Ricker. I'll take that gun of yours, Mr. Kinlan. Saul Castle. Hey, boss. I didn't know the masked man was in the closet.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Does that matter now?
Paul Ricker
No, Castle, you didn't know that. I rode around from the other side of town, waited in the brush. When you walked here, I came in right behind you with my deputy, Warren. We heard everything.
The Lone Ranger
Then you'll not need us anymore, Sheriff. Sergeant Olsen will cinch your case for you and help avenge the persons who died at the hands of Saul Castle. All right, let's get going, Toto.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
Adios.
Paul Ricker
Adios. And thanks. Hey, wait. Wait. What do you know? He's gone. I don't know who he is.
Harry Kinlan / Saul Castle
I do. He wears a mask and his pal's name is Todo. Even a dead duck like me knows he must be the Lone Ranger.
