Welcome to the Old Time Radio Westerns. I'm your host, Andrew Rines, and I'm excited to bring you another episode absolutely free. This is one of over 80 episodes released monthly for your enjoyment. Now, let's get into this episode.
Narrator
There were many kinds of outlaws who tried to block the march of law and order across the western plains. United States Marshal Wild Bill Hickok and his deputy Jingles met them all. Train robbers and confidence men, gamblers and rustlers. But none were more vicious than the killer of Candy. Flat.
Jingles
Dog gone it. I missed him again. Bill, we ain't never gonna get out of this hotel room alive. Why, that pack of coyotes got the whole place surrounded.
Wild Bill Hickok
Save your ammunition, Jingles. It'll be dark before long now.
Jingles
Look at there. One of them Gila monsters hit my shaving mug. And I've had that mug for 10 years.
Wild Bill Hickok
Too bad, partner. But you're wasting your lead. And we haven't got much left for a showdown in case they try rushing us.
Jingles
I wish they would. I'd like to get that low down Blue Miller close enough to take a beat on his witchbone.
Wild Bill Hickok
Don't get careless, Jingles. Blue's dangerous. He's already killed the sheriff and treed the whole town.
Jingles
Yeah, including us. How'd we know he was coming to town with his gang?
Wild Bill Hickok
We didn't. But we've been in worse spots than this.
Jingles
Well, maybe so, but I have difficulty in remembering. When you coming out of there, Hickok? No, we ain't. You low down, Polecat. I just hope you take a notion to come up them stairs after us.
Blue Miller
I got a better way than that. Okay, shorty.
Jingles
Like that fuse, baby. A dynamite or a bomb.
Wild Bill Hickok
Get back from that window, Jingles.
Blue Miller
Look out. Hickok. Here comes your finish, Bill.
Jingles
It's a bomb with a little sharp fuse.
Wild Bill Hickok
I got a jingle. Stand back.
Jingles
Well, draw it out the window, Bill. Quick. Here goes. Ah. Slowly throwing it back. Run. I bet that surprised him.
Wild Bill Hickok
Quick, Jingles, now's our chance. Down the back stairs.
Jingles
Yeah. Have both your guns ready.
Wild Bill Hickok
That explosion might draw him away from the back door. Here. Wait a minute while I take a look.
Jingles
See anything, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
No. We're in luck, though. Horses still tied up near the livery stable across the alley. Come on, partner. We're getting out of here.
Jingles
I'll just keep out of my way.
Wild Bill Hickok
Jump in that cell and we'll head for Candy Flat.
Jingles
Candy Flat? Bill, are you crazy? That's where Blue Miller and his gang come from.
Wild Bill Hickok
I know that, partner. That's why we're going there. Steady, Buckshot.
Jingles
He just ain't making sense, boss.
Wild Bill Hickok
They ain't up here in this room.
Blue Miller
Then they must have got out the back way.
Wild Bill Hickok
After him.
Blue Miller
After him, you hammer hat.
Jingles
Uh.
Narrator
Oh.
Jingles
Bill, let's get out of here. That they see us.
Blue Miller
We're getting high by Chat.
Jingles
High by Jeff Yoga. You heard what Bill said. Ha.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, we finally lost him.
Jingles
Yeah. Doubling back over the hill was too much for him.
Blue Miller
Whoa.
Wild Bill Hickok
Buckshot, stop here and take a breather.
Jingles
That was really a close one, Bill. I thought that hotel room was gonna be our last resting place.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, Blue Miller thought that, too. I guess now it's up to us to bring him in.
Jingles
Just how do you figure to do that? He'd mean her in a gray wolf with one foot in the bear trap.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, we'll just have to pull his fangs, partner. That's Candy Flat just below us. We'll ride down there and hide our horses and wait for him to come home.
Jingles
You being serious, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure am.
Jingles
You mean you're gonna go right into Blue Miller's hideout and wait for him?
Wild Bill Hickok
That's right. I don't know any better way to find him. Come on. Get along there, Buckshot.
Jingles
I thought I was lucky when I got out of that hotel alive. Bill. This is just plain crazy. Bill, are you sure you know what you're doing?
Wild Bill Hickok
Quiet, Jingle. Dark enough now to get inside.
Jingles
Oh, wait, Bill. There's one of Blue's men sitting on the back porch.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. Must have been left to guard the place. You stay here. I'll get him.
Mose
Hey, who's that?
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, Jingles, come on.
Jingles
That's what I call a right nice piece of work, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, but we're after bigger game.
Jingles
Yeah, and here they come.
Wild Bill Hickok
Put Jingles inside the house.
Jingles
I don't fall and break my neck in the dark. Oh, why can't be that last thing, Bill. Why you.
Wild Bill Hickok
Jingles, get up.
Jingles
Get up, he says. Bill, we're going to be setting ducks for that pack of gun slicks. We won't stand a chance.
Blue Miller
All right, one of you guys get a light working. Then clear out of here and let me think. I got to figure out a way to find that Wild Bill Hickok and kill him off once and for all.
Narrator
Today'S. Wild Bill Hickok. Story continues in just one minute. After a narrow escape from a Blue Miller gang, Wild Bill Hickok decided to trap Blue in his own hideout. He arrived there with Jingles just ahead of the gang only to find himself in a tougher spot than before.
Blue Miller
All right, where's that light?
Wild Bill Hickok
I got it, Blue.
Blue Miller
Here's the lamp.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wait, let's strike a man.
Blue Miller
Hey, what's going on here? Shorty. Shorty. Now which one of you jugheads is laughing? Who knocked that lamp over? Hey, somebody knocked Shorty down too.
Mose
Was washed. Hey, Blue, where are you?
Jingles
Right here.
Blue Miller
Who's that?
Mose
It's me, Mose. Hey, whoever's playing jokes around here better cut it out. I don't like being hit over the head.
Blue Miller
Hit over the head? Who hit you?
Mose
I don't know.
Blue Miller
I'm gonna break somebody's head for this.
Mose
Boss, there's ghost loose in this room.
Blue Miller
Well, I gotta get a light. Wait till I strike a match. Hey, who blew out that match? Get out of here, all of you. If there's somebody loose in this room, I'll get em myself. Go on, clear out and stay out.
Jingles
What are we gonna do now, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Wait and see, Jingles.
Blue Miller
Now we'll see whether there's anybody in this room or not. I know there's a lamp over the fireplace.
Jingles
This one's on you, Bill. Yeah.
Blue Miller
Oh, so there is somebody in here. All right, which one of you double crossing mavericks is looking for trouble with me? Come on, speak up. I'll blast every corner of this room. You ought to know better than to play games with Blue Miller. I'd as soon shoot you as think about it.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now, Jingles.
Jingles
Oh no you don't. Oh yes we do, you ringtail hyena. Now shut up.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're kind of rough on him. Pardon?
Jingles
Just tapped him asleep for a little while, Bill. He'll be easier to handle that way. Well, what are we going to do with him?
Wild Bill Hickok
The whole gang's still out front waiting for his call to come back in. Let's go out the back door with him.
Jingles
I'll carry him. Billy don't weigh over 200. Now you just lead the way and keep those six guns loose in case we have to fight our way out of here. All right, Blue Miller, get in that cell. Well, we got you locked up at last.
Blue Miller
You can't keep me in here. There ain't a jail in this country that'll hold me.
Jingles
I'm gonna stay right here in the sheriff's office. And I'd like to see you try to get out.
Wild Bill Hickok
Okay, Jingles, you stay here. I'll go over and get us something to eat.
Jingles
Well, that's the best news I've heard today, Bill. You know, fighting hombres like Blue Miller's gang makes me mighty hungry. I'll sit right here and keep an eagle eye on him and hurry back.
Wild Bill Hickok
You just be sure and stay awake, partner.
Jingles
Oh, I will, I will. Yes, indeed. Bright eyed and bushy tail that old Jingle. Yes. Hurry.
Wild Bill Hickok
Blue.
Jingles
Blue.
Blue Miller
Hey, boss. Who's there? It's me, Shorty, outside the window. Well, it's about time I get rot in here before you guys get around to doing anything. Get me out of here. Gee, boss, we didn't even know where you disappeared to.
Mose
Yeah, Blue Pinu saw Hickok bring you in here and came out to tell.
Blue Miller
Us we got it all set. Now, I don't wants holding you up. We want to be sure of the layout. Where's Jingles? Sleeping in a chair in the office. You got a six gun for me?
Mose
Sure, kid. Pick one of mine.
Blue Miller
I'll slip it through the bar. I got it, Tick. Doc's down at the restaurant. We gotta work fast. What's the plan? The boys are blowing up the bank. That'll draw the town down there. I got a pair of strong horses here to pull the bars out of the window. We'll get the ropes up here and tie them to the bars. And be quiet about it. Okay. Keep that horse quiet. That big ox is waking up. Hey, Mose, hold that box still.
Jingles
What's going on in there? Who you talking to?
Blue Miller
Talking to myself. What's it to you?
Jingles
Oh, nothing. You know, I talk to myself too once in a while when I can't find nobody else interesting to talk to.
Blue Miller
Well, go on back and talk to yourself then. I ain't got nothing to say to you.
Jingles
What in the thunder was there?
Blue Miller
Came from down the street. Sounds like somebody's robbing the bank.
Jingles
The bank?
Mose
Yeah.
Blue Miller
You better go see.
Jingles
Yeah, you ain't going no bank. I better go see.
Blue Miller
Come on, Shorty, get those horses pulling.
Wild Bill Hickok
Okay, boss.
Blue Miller
Get up there.
Jingles
Lead into those collars. Haul away. Oh.
Blue Miller
What's the matter?
Jingles
Them bars is in there right tight, Blue. You better get them out and fast. Oh, yeah? Yeah.
Blue Miller
Dig in now. It's coming.
Jingles
Keep pulling. There you are, Blue.
Blue Miller
A hole big enough to walk out of and your horse is right here. Then come on, hit those saddles and let's ride.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, quiet down now. What happened, Bill?
Jingles
I heard an explosion. Six guns Popping. Now, what happened?
Wild Bill Hickok
That's what I'm trying to find out.
Jingles
Hey, it was the bank.
Mose
Yeah, it was the bank, all right. Oh, howdy, Mr. Hickok.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hiya, Sam. Glad to see you. How much did you lose out of the safe?
Mose
Not a red cent. Can't figure it out at all.
Wild Bill Hickok
You mean they didn't rob the bank?
Jingles
Whole front window's blown out.
Mose
Yeah, that's what I can't figure, Jingles. They just messed the place up a little and broke the wind in. Made a big noise. Safe wasn't even touched.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hey, wait a minute, Jingles. What made you think it was the bank in the first place?
Jingles
Well, when we heard the explosion. Blue.
Wild Bill Hickok
That's what I thought.
Mose
You got Blue Miller in jail down there? Hickok? He's the meanest killer that ever set foot in Candy Flat. Is he in jail?
Wild Bill Hickok
I doubt it. That explains why you didn't lose any money. Come on, Jingles. Let's go learn the bad news.
Jingles
But, Bill, Blue was right there in the cell when I left. How could he get out? Oh, dog on it.
Wild Bill Hickok
Anyway, he pulled an old trick on his partner causing trouble in another part of the town to attract attention.
Jingles
But I was right there all the time.
Wild Bill Hickok
You didn't go to sleep, did you, Jingle?
Jingles
Who, me? Oh, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
There it is, partner. The whole side of the cell pulled out, bars and all. He stepped out of that hole without even bowing his head.
Jingles
Why, that slippery snake.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now we've got it all to do over again.
Jingles
Oh, dad burned my dusty old feather head. Anyway, what did I have to go to sleep for? I was just.
Wild Bill Hickok
I thought so.
Jingles
Oh, sure put my foot in at that time.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, never mind, partner. We caught him once, we'll get him again. Let's go in the jail and get some extra ammunition.
Jingles
Yeah, this time we ain't gonna be so easy to run to ground. I'll tell you that. He ain't.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're right about that. We have to think up some new tricks.
Jingles
He sure ain't going to fall for that lamp breaking stunt we pulled last time. He sure had him going for a while there, didn't he?
Blue Miller
All right, spread out and surround the jail.
Wild Bill Hickok
Jingles.
Jingles
It's him.
Blue Miller
Peacock and that big ox deputy are boot in there. This time they don't get out, you hear?
Wild Bill Hickok
Jingles, lock that door. I'll get the back one.
Jingles
I sure will. That's got it, Bill. What about the hole in the cell wall?
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. Push this desk in front of it. We'll lock the door of the cell.
Jingles
You just stand out of my way now. Here we go.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, line up your guns. We're liable to be here for a long time.
Blue Miller
That's it, boys.
Jingles
Feed them lead.
Blue Miller
This is the end of Wild Bill Hickok.
Jingles
No, it's likely to be the end of his big debity Jingle Dog. On it, Bill. We're right back where.
Narrator
Today'S Wild Bill Hickok story continues in just one minute. Blue Miller's surprise escape was one thing. But the next move of the Candy Flat Killer was even bigger surprise when he doubled back and surrounded the jail with his gang leaving Wild Bill and Jingles bottled up inside.
Jingles
Doggone it, that's getting too darn close.
Wild Bill Hickok
Keep your head down, Jingles.
Jingles
Why don't the townspeople do something to help us out?
Wild Bill Hickok
Miller's got the whole town buffaloed, partner. I guess it's up to us.
Jingles
Yeah, up to us. Well, just what can we do? See, them varmints got us fixed up like two grasshoppers in a bot.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, we'll keep them interested while we think of something.
Blue Miller
You better give up, Hickok.
Wild Bill Hickok
Your time's coming, Blue.
Blue Miller
You'll never get me again. This time I'm gonna finish you once and for all. You two bit marshal.
Jingles
You better not stick your old head out and say that, you crawling coyote.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're wasting your time, Jingles. It's too dark and they're not taking any chances. Hey, wait a minute. I got an idea.
Jingles
Well, it better be a good one.
Wild Bill Hickok
It's a long shot.
Jingles
Well, most of the things you call ideas are long shots. Well, spill it. We can't be in a much worse.
Wild Bill Hickok
Pickle near the front door. Jingles, maybe I can bait Blue Miller into coming in after you.
Jingles
Crazy Bill, if that pack of wolves decide to come in, we're gone as sure.
Wild Bill Hickok
I said it was a long shot. Now, come on.
Jingles
All right. Now what do I do?
Wild Bill Hickok
They try to push that door open, hold it against them.
Jingles
Sure. There's only about 15 of those bruisers out there. Oh, I wish I could just hit one of them.
Wild Bill Hickok
Then when I say so, let it swing open. We'll run out the back door, pull it shut and I'll run around and lock the front door on them.
Jingles
Oh, I get it. We'll bottle them up, huh?
Wild Bill Hickok
That's it.
Jingles
Won't work.
Wild Bill Hickok
Got any better ideas?
Jingles
No, dad, burn it. I ain't got no ideas at all. Go ahead.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're not getting anywhere with this, Blue. Why don't you try coming in after us?
Blue Miller
You'll give up sooner or later. You can't hold out in there forever.
Jingles
Oh, Jingles, they got me. They did.
Wild Bill Hickok
No, I'm just fooling.
Blue Miller
All right, Shorty. We got Hickok. Get that log and batter that door down.
Wild Bill Hickok
It's working, Jingles.
Jingles
Yeah, but what do we do now?
Blue Miller
Yeah, that's it. Pound that door down.
Jingles
Bring it in. Oh, Bill, I ain't gonna be able to hold it for long.
Wild Bill Hickok
Just a little longer, Jingles.
Blue Miller
Samora, you guys get on this log.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hey, he's pulling them away from the back door. Jingles, now's our chance.
Blue Miller
What's the matter with you, you weak kneed mavericks. Put some steam behind.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, Jingles, unlock that door and run now.
Jingles
Here I go, boss. All of you, get in there after him. Come on, get us, Blue. Come on, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Out the door, Jingles. All right, close it.
Jingles
We got him in there.
Wild Bill Hickok
Here's a key. Lock it while I run around and get the front door.
Jingles
Watch yourself, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
I hope this works. Yeah, they're all inside now. We'll bottle them up. You're glad they didn't break this lock.
Blue Miller
That's a mighty slick trick. Oh, no. Don't move. That's a gun in your back. And I'd take a big pleasure in pulling the trigger.
Jingles
Now if you did, Blue Miller, I'd have to get some pleasure too. Wouldn't knife.
Wild Bill Hickok
Watch him jingle.
Blue Miller
You ain't taking me, Bill.
Jingles
Now you got no gun at all, Blue.
Blue Miller
But I still got legs. You'll have to catch me.
Jingles
There he goes, Bill. No, you don't, Blue. This is the end of the line.
Wild Bill Hickok
Come get us out of here.
Jingles
Blue's got troubles of his own right now. Here come the men from the town to take care of you, Varmint.
Blue Miller
I'm going to kill you, Hickok.
Wild Bill Hickok
You've been trying to do that most.
Jingles
Of the night, mister.
Narrator
Wild Bill Hickok will continue after this message.
Jingles
Well, Bill, that takes care of him again. But keep your foot on him. He's slippier than a sidewinder and a barrel of soap.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're right about that, jingle.
Jingles
Hey, look, Bill. Looks like the banker got the men to show a little spunk now that we got them jaspers herded together in jail.
Mose
Mr. Hickok, we sure owe you a debt of gratitude. And in an apology.
Jingles
What are you gonna apologize for, Sam?
Mose
Because we didn't do anything. But watch while you battled Blue Miller and his outlaws to a standstill.
Jingles
Oh, that's all right, ain't it, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure, Sam. Think nothing of it. The whole gang's corral. Now, I don't think they'll give you any more trouble.
Mose
Well, thanks to you two, maybe we can have some peace and quiet around Candy Flat again.
Wild Bill Hickok
I sure hope so, Sam.
Jingles
Yeah, me too, too. The next time we have to fight any owl hoots in this town. I got an idea, Bill. You folks seem to enjoy the show so much, I'm going to wait till it's over and pass the hat. If we're that good, we ought to charge admission.

Original Air Date: March 6, 1953
In this captivating episode of the Old Time Radio Westerns podcast, host Andrew Rines brings to life the intense showdown between the legendary U.S. Marshal Wild Bill Hickok and the ruthless outlaw Blue Miller. Set against the rugged backdrop of Candy Flat, this digitally restored radio drama immerses listeners in a gripping tale of courage, strategy, and relentless pursuit of justice in the Wild West.
The episode opens with Wild Bill Hickok and his loyal deputy, Jingles, embroiled in a tense standoff within a hotel room besieged by a gang of outlaws led by the formidable Blue Miller. The atmosphere is thick with danger as the outlaws, described as pack-like coyotes, surround the room, leaving Hickok and Jingles with dwindling ammunition.
As the situation grows dire, tension mounts with the arrival of Blue Miller, who taunts Hickok and Jingles. A cunning plan unfolds when Jingles ingeniously throws a bomb back at the attackers, causing a distraction that allows the duo to escape. This narrow evasion showcases the quick thinking and resourcefulness of Hickok and his deputy.
Determined to capture Blue Miller, Hickok devises an audacious plan to lure the outlaw into his own hideout. Despite Jingles' skepticism about targeting Candy Flat—the very origin of Blue and his gang—Hickok remains resolute. Their strategy involves hiding their horses and patiently waiting for Blue Miller to make his move, setting the stage for a classic Western confrontation.
The tension escalates as Blue Miller and his gang infiltrate the jail where Hickok and Jingles have taken refuge. A fierce battle ensues within the confines of the jailhouse, highlighting the desperateness of Blue Miller to eliminate Hickok once and for all. The interplay between the protagonists and antagonists underscores themes of perseverance and tactical warfare.
In a dramatic climax, Hickok employs a clever ruse to trap Blue Miller and his gang inside the jail, effectively turning the tables on the outlaws. As Blue attempts to escape, his confidence wanes, leading to his eventual capture. The episode masterfully balances suspense and action, culminating in a satisfying resolution where law and order prevail.
With Blue Miller and his gang subdued, Candy Flat breathes a sigh of relief. The townspeople, previously cowed by the outlaws' reign, express their gratitude towards Hickok and Jingles. The episode concludes on a triumphant note, celebrating the enduring legacy of Wild Bill Hickok as the steadfast guardian of the frontier.
"The Killer of Candy Flat | Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" stands as a quintessential Western radio drama, brilliantly restored to offer listeners an authentic auditory experience.
