Narrator
With his faithful Indian companion Toto, the daring and resourceful masked rider of the Plains led the fight for law and order in the early Western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again. It was press day at the Modoc City News And Inky, the 14 year old adopted son of editor Tom Bent, was busy sweeping the floor of the office. Tom's wife Hilda worked at a nearby desk while Tom himself labored in the back room to keep the press operating. Inky looked up as the door opened and saw Tonto and Ned, the houseboy from Ma Hanks Hotel.
Ma Hank
Hi, Tano, Ned.
Tom Bent
Hello, Tano.
Ned
It's great to see you. Tano. Where's the Lone Ranger?
Tonto
Him with Marshal Jim Frazier.
Inky
I heard him say he's looking for an escaped convict named Deke Jones.
Tom Bent
Ah, we think Jones near Modoc City.
Inky
Mrs. Bent, Ma Hank sent me to pick up the paper you're contributing to her rummage sale.
Ma Hank
It's there on the counter, Ned.
Ned
Hey, someone else is coming here.
Ma Hank
An old timer, looks like.
Tom Bent
Mmm, me know him. Him outlaw named Sid Carson.
Inky
An outlaw?
Tom Bent
Not outlaw now. Him serve time in jail.
Sid Carson
I'd like to see the editor of this newspaper. Hey, you're Tornho, isn't that right? You and your mask friend jail me.
Ace Spencer
Ah, you go straight now.
Sid Carson
Yeah, doggone right.
Tom Bent
Did I hear someone ask for me?
Sid Carson
I asked for you.
Tom Bent
If you're the editor, and I am,
Sid Carson
maybe you'll run an ad for a shaving mug.
Tom Bent
Shaving mug?
Sid Carson
Yes, a special one. Tell where there's $100,000 worth of gold to be found.
Tom Bent
Oh, Lord.
Sid Carson
Pete stole the gold 15 years ago and hid it somewhere near Mo Dog City.
Tom Bent
Stolen gold then?
Sid Carson
Well, it was stolen from Mexican revolutionists. Their plot was discovered and they went into hiding. Right now that gold belongs to whoever finds it. And I'll split with the man who helps me.
Tom Bent
You say the gold's hidden near here?
Sid Carson
Yes. Brother Pete hid it, then joined my other brothers. And soon after that they were caught and jailed. The Lone Ranger caught me. I went to prison in California.
Tom Bent
Where are your brothers now?
Sid Carson
Hank went to the gallows. Pete got life in territorial prison. Jed was turned over to the law in California. He was sentenced to the same prison I was.
Narrator
Me hear about capture a gang?
Inky
Yeah.
Sid Carson
Jed was killed trying to burst out of prison. But he'd already told me about Pete's gold.
Tom Bent
When were you released?
Sid Carson
A couple of months ago. I went to territorial prison to see Pete.
Tom Bent
Did he tell you about the gold?
Sid Carson
No, he couldn't. The guards might overheard us talk, but Pete's cellmate was a trustee who painted things on glass in China on visiting days. He sold his work outside the prison gates.
Tom Bent
That's one of the privileges of being a trustee.
Sid Carson
Pete told me that he had the trustee paint a picture of our old homestead on the shaving mug. He said the picture even showed the old bull in the pasture.
Tom Bent
What about it?
Sid Carson
We never had a homestead picture. Tells where the gold's hidden. Before I could buy the mug, some other visitor got it. Two days later, Pete died.
Inky
But who bought the mug?
Sid Carson
Well, the trustee said he'd sold it to a peddler. I followed the critter this fire, but have lost this trail. Now I'm broke. Can't go any further without help.
Tom Bent
Why? Why'd you come to me then?
Sid Carson
Heard that you were on the level. I trust you.
Tom Bent
Thanks.
Sid Carson
Mug might turn up if you run an ad saying it's a keepsake.
Tom Bent
I'll think about it, sid. Meanwhile, here's $5. Get yourself a good meal.
Sid Carson
Yeah, thanks. Thanks a lot. Sure use a meal.
Ma Hank
So long, Injun.
Ace Spencer
Adio, Sid.
Sid Carson
Don't forget to run the ad for
Ma Hank
the mug
Tom Bent
the old fraud did.
Ned
Don't you believe what he said, Tom.
Tom Bent
Of course not.
Ma Hank
Is he gone, Tom?
Tom Bent
Yes, he'll do.
Inky
He told us all about a fortune in hidden gold.
Ma Hank
If you're to take that stationary to my hang for the rummage sale, you better get going.
Inky
Yes, I'm going right now. So long, Inky.
Ned
See you later, Ned. But don't tell anyone about the gold.
Inky
Don't worry, I'll keep it quiet.
Tom Bent
There's no need for secrecy, Inky.
Ned
But tomorrow we don't want everyone to find out about that buried treasure.
Ma Hank
What's this talk about buried treasure?
Tom Bent
Oh, forget it, Hilda. Old Sid was just telling a good story.
Ned
I believed him.
Tom Bent
At your age, I might have believed him too.
Ma Hank
Inky, Here's a copy of the paper for the Lone Ranger. Tondo, the ink's still wet.
Tonto
Me Take it to him.
Tom Bent
Oh, I'm going with you, Tondo. I'd like to talk to the masked man about that escaped convict he's looking for.
Narrator
The escaped convict Deke Jones had found shelter in Ace Spencer's cafe in Modoc City. From the window of a second floor bedroom that served as a hideout, the freshly shaven fugitive looked into the street. Ace Spencer stood beside him, scowling.
Ace Spencer
Deke, what started a smart gent like you on a treasure hunt?
Tonto
I was in the prison hospital, Ace bunking next to Pete Carson when he died. While he was delirious, he mistook me for his brother. Sid told me to be sure to get hold of the shaving mug. His cellmate painted the Picture on the mug tells where to find $100,000 in buried gold.
Ace Spencer
And you believe that?
Tonto
I found out Sid tried to buy the mug from the trustee, but it already been sold to a peddler. The trustee said Sid asked a lot of questions about the fellow who bought it. So I broke out of prison, figuring the risk was worth it if I could find the gold and clear out of the country. And I finally traced the peddler who bought it to Modoc City.
Ace Spencer
So that's why you turned up here.
Tonto
Sid Carson's in town for the same reason. I was watching from this window when he went into the newspaper office, came out a few minutes ago and headed for Ma Hanks Hotel.
Ace Spencer
You think he's found the mug?
Tonto
There's only one way to find out. Ask him. I'll split that gold with you if you'll help me get it.
Ace Spencer
All right. What about old Sid Carson? If he's found that mug, we'll kill
Tonto
him if we have to to get it. I'll go to the Henry house before he leaves the place. But you better go armed in case of trouble.
Ace Spencer
I am armed.
Tonto
Oh, sneak gun, huh?
Ace Spencer
That's the easiest way to take a man by surprise.
Tonto
Well, if you shoot, make sure Carson doesn't live to talk.
Ace Spencer
Don't worry. I'll not put my neck in a no.
Narrator
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger adventure before the next exciting scenes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments.

Tom Bent
Now.
Narrator
To continue, Ned returned to Ma Hanks hotel. The buxom landlady was in the large front parlor. Neat stacks of silver and paper currency were on the table in front of her.
Inky
Ma, I hope you're not rowed, because I was late.
Ma Hank
I don't blame anyone for losing track of time with the Lone Ranger and Toddo around.
Ace Spencer
Come on.
Ma Hank
The rummage sale's over. We'll clear out of here so Jenny can clean the parlor. Say, bring that box, will you, Ned?
Ned
Yes.
Inky
What's in it?
Ma Hank
Some stuff that was left in the hotel by an old peddler who left town without paying his room rent.
Inky
Doesn't anyone want it?
Ma Hank
I couldn't even give it away.
Inky
If you're giving it away, I'll take it.
Ma Hank
Well, that suits me, Ned. Say, while I'm putting this cash in the safe, you go to the dining room and see if the old feller at the table is getting enough to eat.
Inky
Right.
Narrator
Sid Carson was the only occupant of the dining room, blissfully enjoying the best meal he'd eaten in many years. The old man wanted nothing. So Ned returned to the kitchen to investigate the contents of the box Ma had given him. He was lifting the lid when Inky entered carrying an armful of newspapers.
Inky
Finished for the day, Inky?
Ned
No, I'm delivering the newspaper. I brought Ma Hank two dozen copies to sell to her guests.
Inky
She's in her office putting cash away.
Ned
I'll put her papers on the table. What's that stuff?
Inky
That's just some things we couldn't sell at the rummage sale. Look, here's an old mouth organ. Hey, it works.
Ned
Here's an old pistol. But the trigger's busted.
Inky
Oh, that's no good.
Ned
There's a shaving outfit.
Inky
Ah, the mug's cracked and chipped. No one would want that.
Ned
Ned, look at the picture on the mug.
Inky
It's just a lot of scenery with a bull in the pasture and jumping grasshopper.
Ned
That's the mug. The one the trusty painted.
Inky
You're right. Ma said this stuff was left in the hotel by a peddler who skipped out without paying his bill.
Ned
And Sid told Tom a peddler bought the mug. Ned, we've got to find Mr. Carson.
Inky
He's in the dining room right now.
Ned
Let's go see him.
Narrator
The two boys almost tripped each other in their haste to reach the swinging door that opened in the of front the dining room. In their excitement, they didn't Pay any attention to Ace Spencer, who sat across the table from Sid Carson. Spencer had been questioning the old convict when Inky shouted, Mr. Carson, we found it.
Ned
Look at it. Look. That's right, Mr. Carson.
Narrator
Ace Spencer reached beneath his coat for his gun as Inky held the mug, pointing with an ink smudged finger at the scene painted on the side. At that moment, the door from the kitchen opened and Ma Hank strode into the room.
Ma Hank
The idea of leaving that stuff spread out on my kitchen floor. Now, I gave it to you because I wanted to get rid of it.
Inky
But Ma, I just want.
Ma Hank
Clear it out of the kitchen, Fronto. Now get moving. Hey, Spencer, what's the idea of pulling a gun in my hotel?
Ace Spencer
Get your hands up. Ma, keep your voice down.
Ma Hank
Why, you loco tinhorn. If you think you can come in
Ace Spencer
here, you're all covered.
Ma Hank
You can't cover all of us at once.
Ace Spencer
I can cover you long enough to get that mug.
Ma Hank
No, no, the mug's mine.
Ace Spencer
Not anymore. Hand it over, Inky.
Narrator
Inky's mind raced. The door to the kitchen was behind him, and Ma Hank stood beside him, holding the mug tightly. He turned and raced for the door.
Ace Spencer
Come back here.
Narrator
Ace whirled to shoot Inky, but Ma Hank's 275lb blocked him. Ace backed away before the huge landlady could grab his gun arm. By that time, Inky had escaped.
Ma Hank
Now what are you gonna do, Spencer? Inky's gone.
Ace Spencer
You three are going out the back door of this hotel and through the alley to my place.
Ma Hank
I'm not going anywhere.
Ace Spencer
Follow orders or I'll shoot Ned and Sid Carson and I'll put a bullet through you.
Ma Hank
Why, you dirty skunk. If I had my scatter gun.
Ace Spencer
Shut up and get moving.
Narrator
Meanwhile, Toto and Tom Bent found the Lone Ranger and Marshal Jim Fraser a short distance from town. The masked man pointed out the tracks he and the marshal were following. The Indian recognized the loose right front shoe.
Tonto
Them tracks same as ones we follow from territorial prison.
Ace Spencer
Uh huh.
Tonto
We'll get the critter now.
Tom Bent
Do you mind if I join the man hunt, Marshal Jim? Not at all, Tom.
Ace Spencer
Come on.
Narrator
As they rode slowly watching the ground, Tom told about Sid Carson's visit to the newspaper office earlier that day.
Tom Bent
The old fraud expected me to believe that story about buried gold.
Ace Spencer
The story's true, Tom.
Tom Bent
What's that?
Ace Spencer
Pete Carson stole the gold from Mexican revolutionists. Then Pete buried the gold where no one knew until it was found 10 years ago.
Tom Bent
Well, I'll be doggone.
Inky
Who found it, mister?
Ace Spencer
A couple of federal Agents uncovered it, Marshall, Jim. They returned the gold to the Mexican government.
Tom Bent
Does Sid know it was found?
Ace Spencer
I don't think so, Tom. The affair was handled quietly by Washington and officials of Mexico.
Tom Bent
How come you know about it?
Ace Spencer
I was with the men who found it.
Tom Bent
Poor old Sid's in for a big disappointment.
Narrator
As he lay on the floor in the cellar beneath Ace Spencer's cafe, Sid Carson regretted the impulse that had taken him to the newspaper office in search of his brother's gold. Now, Ma, Hank and Ned, her houseboy, were also prisoners, tied hand and foot like himself. Not one of the prisoners was gagged.
Ace Spencer
Yell your heads off you want to. This cellar so well built, no one will hear you.
Ma Hank
You're loco, Ace Spencer. Inky will bring the law here.
Ace Spencer
I doubt that, Ma.
Tonto
I think she's right, Ace.
Ace Spencer
Hey, he doesn't know I brought these three here, Deke.
Tonto
No, but he's likely to start a search of the whole town.
Ace Spencer
He won't if he knows his friends will die.
Tonto
What do you mean?
Ace Spencer
I'll tell him to give me the mug and keep his mouth shut or else.
Tonto
Or else we shoot these three, huh? Right here.
Ace Spencer
You keep an eye on him, Deke. I go look for Inky.
Narrator
As Ace Spencer emerged from the cellar door that opened on an alley in the rear of his cafe, he saw a strange cavalcade coming from his stable. Marshall Fraser was in the lead. Behind him was the Lone Ranger, Tonto and Tom Bent.
Tonto
He's sure just the man we want to see.
Ace Spencer
What's the idea of traveling with a masked man, Marshall?
Inky
That's my business. Right now, you're the one who'll answer questions.
Ace Spencer
Well, if you've seen Inky, you should know better than to believe anything he says.
Tom Bent
What do you mean by that, Spencer?
Ace Spencer
Inky's a lying little sneak.
Inky
Now, hold a tom.
Tom Bent
I'll knock his head off for talking about Inky that way.
Tonto
We didn't come here to talk about Inky.
Ace Spencer
You didn't?
Tonto
No. Who owns the chestnut mare in your stable?
Ace Spencer
Why, that belongs to Cowpoke. Where's the cowpoke now? Well, he reckon he's in the cafe. Otto, go to the cafe. See if anyone answering that man's description is inside me.
Tonto
He's savvy.
Ace Spencer
Go look for him. But I didn't describe the fellow owns that mayor. You don't know what he looks like.
Inky
The masked man knows who he is.
Ace Spencer
Why'd you ask me about him?
Tonto
Because I figured you were a crook.
Ace Spencer
You can't prove anything against me.
Inky
I never had anything against you except
Tonto
the crooked games you run in your cafe.
Ace Spencer
You cleaned those up. I paid my fine and I turned you loose.
Tonto
But I didn't change my mind about the kind of polecat you are.
Ma Hank
Marshall Jim.
Tom Bent
Jinky.
Ned
I've looked all over for you, Marshall Jim.
Ace Spencer
I'm clearing out of your holidays.
Ned
No. Don't let him get away.
Tom Bent
Oh, shimmer down, Inky.
Ned
But he's a crook. He tried to get this shaving mug. He pulled a gun on my hank net and sit on me.
Ace Spencer
What about that, Spencer? He's lying.
Ned
It's the truth, mister. He wants to get the mug.
Ace Spencer
You still have the mug.
Ned
You tried to take it.
Ace Spencer
Oh, that's loco. What would I want with an old shaving mug?
Ned
It's worth a fortune.
Ace Spencer
It might have been if you'd had the mug before Pete Carson's gold was found. Inky, huh?
Tom Bent
That's right, Inky. Pete's gold was returned to Mexico years
Ace Spencer
ago, and the mug's worthless.
Tonto
Pete Jones not in Cafe Kimasabe, he isn't.
Ace Spencer
He must have left the cafe. Maybe somewhere else in town.
Tonto
I figured you were hiding that crook Spencer.
Ace Spencer
You figured wrong. Perhaps not. Spencer was coming from the cellar when we met him. Marshall Jim.
Tom Bent
That's so.
Ace Spencer
If he wanted to conceal Jones, that would be an ideal place to hide him.
Tom Bent
Gee, that's right.
Ace Spencer
There's no one in the cellar.
Inky
I'll see for myself. Stand aside, Ace.
Ace Spencer
You stand where you are, Marshal.
Narrator
Ace reached for his hidden gun. As his derringer cleared leather, the Lone Ranger's Colt roared. A silver bullet struck Ace's gun arm. His fingers relaxed their grip on the weapon. An instant later, the small gun fell to the ground.
Ned
He was going for a sneak gun.
Tom Bent
He was going to shoot you, Marshal Jim.
Tonto
Mister, your shot saved my life.
Ace Spencer
Forget it, Marshal Jim. While you keep an eye on Spencer, Tonto and I'll investigate the cellar.
Narrator
A few moments later, the Lone Ranger and Tonto moved down the steps leading to Spencer's cellar. Tonto's moccasin feet made no sound. But when Deke Jones heard the masked man's boots on the stairs, he called, find Inky.
Ma Hank
Ace.
Tonto
Did you get the muck?
Narrator
Turning his attention from the prisoners, Deke looked toward the steps, expecting to see Ace Spencer.
Tonto
Hey, what the.
Ma Hank
Oh, mister, thank you. Thank goodness you're here.
Ace Spencer
Don't try for that gun, Deke.
Tonto
Hey, how'd you know my name?
Ace Spencer
The warden in territorial prison gave me your description. The warden? Yes. We've been following your trail for weeks. For what to send you back where you came from to prison.
Tonto
No masked man's going, don't try it.
Ned
No, you got him.
Inky
You shot the gun out of his hand.
Ace Spencer
Totto, cut the ropes on Ma and Ned and Sid Carson while I turned Deke Jones over to Marshall Jim.
Narrator
Fifteen minutes later, Deke Jones and Ace Spencer were in jail. Mahank, Ned Inky, Tom Bent and Sid Carson were in the marshal's office talking to the young lawman. They explained how Ace had captured them.
Tonto
He'll pay for that. And he'll likewise get a stiff sentence
Inky
for hiding an escaped convict.
Ma Hank
That's one trial I'll enjoy watching. I'll have a front seat in court the day he's sentenced.
Ned
I wish the masked man could be there.
Tonto
He and Tono have already left town, Inky. They're riding back to territorial prison to report Deke Jones capture to the warden.
Ma Hank
Well, I reckon I'll go back to the hotel. Say, Sid, I need a feller to help out at the Henry house. If you want the job, it's yours.
Sid Carson
Gosh, ma', am, working at the hotel means that I'll get three square meals a day. I'll work for free, just to be sure of eating your cooking.
Ma Hank
You eat at my place for a while, Sid, and you'll fatten up in no time. Come on. We'll see about finding you a place to bunk.
Sid Carson
I never figured folks in Mo Dog City'd be so good to an old convict like me.
Ned
Here's your shaving mug, Mr. Carson. I'm sorry someone else beat you to the gold.
Sid Carson
Thanks, Hinky. Who got that gold?
Tonto
Masked man said he and a couple of federal men found it 10 years ago, Sid. They returned it to the Mexican government.
Sid Carson
Oh, poor Pete. He'd be downright broken up if he'd known his gold was found by two lawmen and the Lone Ranger.
