Welcome to the Old Time Radio Westerns. I'm your host, Andrew Rines, and I'm excited to bring you another episode absolutely free. This is one of over 80 episodes released monthly for your enjoyment. Now, let's get into this episode.
Kellogg
Kellogg, the greatest name in cereals, presents Whale Bill Hickam.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hi, you folks hold on to your hats and pass those Kellogg Sugar Pops because here comes Guy Madison as Wild Bill Hickok and his pal Jingles. Which is me, Andy Devine. We got another Rootin Tootin Wild Bill Hickok adventure story for you. From the cereal you can eat out of the bowl or out of the box. The cereal with the sweetening already on it, Kellogg's Sugar Pop.
Kellogg
Today, Kellogg's Sugar Pops, the cereal with a sweetening already on it brings you Wild Bill Hickok, transcribed in Hollywood and starring Guy Madison as Wild Bill and and Andy Devine as his pal jingles. In just 30 seconds, you'll hear the exciting story. Wranglers. Next time mom asks you what you'd like to have for breakfast, I sure hope you'll pipe up loud and strong for Kellogg's Sugar Pops. You'll love the sweet flavor of those golden nuggets of corn. And so will mom, dad and the rest of the family. And Kellogg's Sugar Pops are swell for snacks too, right out of the box. Either way, you enjoy them as a cereal or as a snack, you never need sugar. Cause the sweetening's already on them. Hello, Sugar Pops. The town of Brimful was a powder keg with a short fuse the day United States Marshal Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles landed there along the main street. Men eyed each other in deadly silence and kept their hands close to their holsters. Then a single gunshot lit the fuse and the powder keg blew up in Wild Bill's face. With a battle royal over the death of the 10 minute mayor.
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, I sure don't like the looks of these gents around us. I feel like an accident going somewhere to happen.
Jingles
Quiet, Jingle. The new mayor is going to speak.
Mayor Brimble
Yes, sir. I want to thank you for electing me, Mayor Brimble. That is, I want to thank the ones that voted the Do Right party ticket.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yell, that little bunch of men on the other side of the crowd ain't exactly in favor of the mayor.
Mayor Brimble
I heard those booze and I know who's doing it. Well, I got something to say to you, John Gadson. You and Mel Sutter, too.
Mel Sutter
Nothing you got to say means anything to us, Mayor.
Mayor Brimble
Well, you better Listen, you're on your way out. You and Sutter and the whole Gadsden gang. You've had your way with this town too long.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah?
Mayor Brimble
Who's gonna run us out, you pinhead? For the help of the good citizens of this town, I am. I've been Mayor of Brimfol 10 minutes now and before I'm through, you'll see.
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, this could lead to trouble.
Jingles
Yeah. Jingles, let's get over there. Come on.
Mayor Brimble
Dark throw right now, Mayor.
Wild Bill Hickok
Your 10 minutes are up. Billy shot the mayor. Mel Sutter did it.
Jingles
He sure did. Grab him, partner.
Mel Sutter
Look out, Shutter.
Mayor Brimble
Here comes hick. You better keep out of this, Hick, if you know what's good for you.
Jingles
You're under arrest. M. Sir.
Mayor Brimble
You're taking a big chance, Hickok. My gun's still out, and you ain't drawed.
Wild Bill Hickok
You'd never get us both, Sutter. Now drop that gun and stand. Hit.
Mayor Brimble
I stand nothing, G. And blast.
Wild Bill Hickok
Get him shot.
Jingles
Don't move, G. Pick up those guns, Jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, Bill. Sure spread them around when he starts.
Mayor Brimble
Shooting, don't he get some.
Wild Bill Hickok
Do something.
Mel Sutter
Dry up, Peony. Cut a crease in your arm. You ought to know better than to draw down on Wild Bill in the first place.
Mayor Brimble
Well, you said we couldn't let him.
Wild Bill Hickok
Stop us from getting the mayor and taking care of.
Mayor Brimble
Shut up.
Mel Sutter
You talk too much, Sutter.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, from now on, he's going to be talking to himself in jail until the judge gets around to his trial. And that shouldn't take long either.
Mel Sutter
You ain't taking him to jail, Hickok.
Jingles
He's a killer. Gadson. He's gone to jail. Stand aside. Move out, Sutter.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, and the next Jasper that tries to stop us had better draw fast. Now, step along.
Mayor Brimble
Go on.
Wild Bill Hickok
Quit poking me with that six gun.
Mel Sutter
You can't hold him, Hickok. You ain't got a jail strong enough. Take my warning, you tin horn. Lawman Mel Sutter will never come to trial.
Wild Bill Hickok
Doggone it, Bill, if they're gonna do something, why don't they do us?
Jingles
Eddie Jingles, we've got all night till morning.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, and that don't make me feel any better either. I'm as jumpy as a jaybird on a barbed wire fan.
Jingles
Well, if they try to take Sutter out of this, Jill, they're gonna have a fight on their hands.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, what's that, Sutter?
Mayor Brimble
You gonna let me starve in here, Hickok? Law says you gotta feed me while I'm here.
Wild Bill Hickok
Killer like you don't deserve the.
Jingles
Go across to the cafe and get him some food, Jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, I ain't gonna leave you here alone.
Jingles
It's all right. If there's any shooting, you'll hear it.
Mayor Brimble
What about it?
Wild Bill Hickok
You gonna feed me or ain't you? No, I'd like to feed him. All right. Horseshoe nails with cactus for dessert.
Jingles
Might bring back a couple of sandwiches. And some coffee for me too, Jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right. You lock this door behind me, Phil. Don't let nobody next you go. Let them have it. Build her out there. Get some.
Kellogg
Today's Wild Bill Hickok story continues in just one minute. Just as Jingles opened the door to start across to the cafe the A burst of gunfire stopped him short.
Wild Bill Hickok
Build her out there, Cat game.
Jingles
Close the door, Jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
I'll blow out the lounge now. At least they can't see us in here.
Jingles
We can't see much of them either, Jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
I can see a shadow there.
Jingles
Nice shooting, partner. That'll discourage them.
Mayor Brimble
You don't stand a chance, Hickok. You might as well give up now and send Sutter out to us.
Wild Bill Hickok
Not by a jug full. You smell sneak and owl.
Mayor Brimble
Hoot. If you want him that bad, Gatson.
Jingles
You'Ll have to come in and get him.
Mayor Brimble
We're coming after him, all right.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hurry up and watch where you shoot.
Mayor Brimble
And you might hit me too.
Wild Bill Hickok
Low down. Farm it. I wish they would.
Jingles
No, you don't, Jingles. We've got to see that seller comes to trial.
Mel Sutter
Hey, who's that shooting?
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, what do you make of that?
Jingles
Those shots came from up the street.
Mel Sutter
All right, you guys, hit the saddle.
Mayor Brimble
The whole town's out after us.
Wild Bill Hickok
We'll be back, Bill. The Do Right boys are taking a hand. They're. They're running Gadson off.
Jingles
That pulls us out of a hole for a while, Jingles. But Gadson said he was going to be back.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now, dog on it. Now what?
Jingles
Look out the window, Jingles ain't going.
Wild Bill Hickok
To do any good. What do you think I am, a cat or a hoodie owl?
Mayor Brimble
Mr. Hickok, it's Ted Sherman. You all right in there?
Wild Bill Hickok
Ted Sherman. Now that's a relief.
Jingles
Light the lamb, Jingles. I'll let him in.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure, Bill.
Jingles
Come on in, Ted. We got a lot to thank you and the boys for.
Mayor Brimble
Glad we came along in time to help you out, Marshall. That Gadson's had his day. We've made up our minds to cut him off at the pockets.
Jingles
That may not be so easy, Ted. We've got to get a conviction on set of first. By the way, Jingles, you better check on the prisoner.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, I'll take a look.
Mayor Brimble
You reckon old Judge Pitcher will give a fair trial and just sentence against Sutter for shooting the mayor Hickok? He's never gone against Gadson yet.
Jingles
You're right, Ted. Maybe we better take Sutter to the county seat for trial.
Wild Bill Hickok
Billy's gone. Come quick.
Mayor Brimble
What? Who's gone? What's he talking about?
Jingles
Sutter, I guess.
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill. Look at that window. They pull those bars out clean as a whistle while he was gun fighting.
Mayor Brimble
You mean they broke center out of the cell?
Jingles
Looks that way. Teddy's long.
Wild Bill Hickok
That coyote Gadson put one over on us, Bill.
Jingles
He sure did, partner. But we'll get Sutter back and make him stand trial if we have to turn every rock in the state.
Wild Bill Hickok
Oh now, Bill, I got an awful backache just hearing you talk like that.
Mayor Brimble
Now we'll give you all the help you want, Marshall. Just call on us.
Jingles
Thanks, Ted. But I guess this job is up to Jingles and me.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. Doggone. We were soft headed enough to let them free that varmint.
Jingles
You do right boys. Better get busy and pick yourselves a new mayor. Ted.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. If you don't, first thing you know, Gadson will have a stranglehold on the whole town again.
Jingles
All right, Jingles, check your guns and ammunition. We've got our work cut out for us.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now. What are we gonna do, Bill? We've been riding for darn near 24 hours and ain't found Sutter yet. Why don't we just take Gadson to jail?
Jingles
We haven't got enough to hold him, mon Jingle. But let's go into his gambling palace and talk to him anyhow, Bill, Hickok.
Wild Bill Hickok
Gadsden has every gun tote malhoot in the county inside his place. I ain't hankering to get all shot up till I've had some sleep.
Jingles
Later, Jingles. This may not take long.
Wild Bill Hickok
One doggone minute is too long, Bill. It's suicide to go in there steady for understudy.
Jingles
Hey, got some seniors.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, and so's all the rest of those squid eyed gunfighter.
Jingles
You let me to the talking, Jingles, and don't bat an eye no matter what I say. Cardigans.
Mel Sutter
What do you want here, Hickok?
Jingles
Well, maybe I want to tell you we found Sutter.
Mel Sutter
You found? But what are you up to, Hickok?
Jingles
Nothing. Except taking him before a judge to be tried for shooting the mayor yesterday. Cats.
Mel Sutter
You're bluffing Am I?
Jingles
Come on, Jingles. Now we can get some sleep.
Wild Bill Hickok
Good. Long gone it, Bill. You said we were going to get some sleep. What'd you drag me around behind Gadson's place for?
Jingles
Quiet, Jingles. I don't think we'll have long to wait.
Wild Bill Hickok
What are we waiting for? Why'd you practically tell Gadsden we found Sutter when you know doggone well we didn't?
Jingles
Well, if he wants to believe that, that's all right with me. I thought I'd give him something to worry about. Pardon me.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hey, Bill, look.
Jingles
Yeah, I guess Gadson was a little worried. All right, Jingle. This time he's not going to get away from us.
Mel Sutter
Buckshot, Come here, boy.
Wild Bill Hickok
No more riding and quit your fret.
Jingles
And Jingle, hit that salad.
Mayor Brimble
All right, Buckshot, Stretch out.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. Jeff. Joker. If that Jasper gets away this time, I may never get to sleep again. There he goes, Bill. Up the hill.
Jingles
They're right on his tail, Jingles. We don't want to lose him up there. Buckshot.
Wild Bill Hickok
Where is he leading us, Bill?
Jingles
Right to the spot we've been looking before, all last night and today. Or I missed my guest.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, well, why didn't you ask him before?
Jingles
Because I didn't think of it, I guess.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, you just got to learn to think faster than get off.
Jingles
Okay, hold it, partner.
Wild Bill Hickok
Oh, Joker. Bill, if that's Gadson, he's getting off his horse. Hey, ain't that a cabin? In the shadow in the moonlight there?
Jingles
Yeah. Come on. We're at the end of the trail. Stand there, Buck. John.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, you too, Joker. Now, don't go away. I don't want to walk home.
Jingles
Now, be quiet and follow me.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, but I don't see what he's doing. Come up and up here in the middle of the night all of a sudden. What do you reckon he got hit out in that cabin?
Jingles
Bill, you're talking when you should be listening. Jingle. Hey, hold him.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sorry.
Jingles
Now we'll see in the dark.
Wild Bill Hickok
Quiet. Oh, Turner.
Mayor Brimble
Turner, you here?
Kellogg
Sure, I'm here, G. Where'd you think I was?
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, did you hear that?
Mel Sutter
That blasted Hickok pulled a bluff on me.
Jingles
Hickok?
Mayor Brimble
Where'd you see him?
Mel Sutter
He come to my place tonight. Told me he'd found you and was taking you somewhere for trial.
Kellogg
I ain't seen him.
Mayor Brimble
He's played you for a sucker.
Jingles
Gets here.
Mayor Brimble
What was that?
Wild Bill Hickok
Quiet, Jingles.
Kellogg
Quiet.
Mel Sutter
I heard something out there.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, and he's sure going to be surprised when he finds out what it was, too.
Mayor Brimble
They're just getting jumpy.
Mel Sutter
Guess you hadn't pulled that durn pool stunt of shooting the mayor, we wouldn't be in this pig, Sutter.
Mayor Brimble
I. Don't go throwing all the blame on me. You said get him out of the way. What are you scared of anyway? We got enough gunfighters to handle Hickok any day.
Mel Sutter
Sure, sure, we have a. Yes, I am getting jumpy. Sure, we got plenty of guns on our side. I'm going to continue to run the town of Brimpole. Just cuz Hickok showed up for a day don't mean nothing.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure is talking himself into it, ain't he, Bill?
Jingles
Yeah. Guess we've heard enough, partner. We going to take him now, Bill? Might as well. Come on. You take the window and I'll walk in the door.
Wild Bill Hickok
Okay, Bill. Now be careful, sir.
Mel Sutter
I did hear something out there. Who's there?
Wild Bill Hickok
Tell him, Bill.
Mel Sutter
Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wild Bill and Jingles.
Mayor Brimble
Let him have it.
Wild Bill Hickok
Get some. Shoot your fool.
Kellogg
Today's Wild Bill Hickok story continues in just one minute, in the split second it took Mel Sutter to recognize Wild Bill, Hickok and Jingles in the half dark, Gadson's guns began to bark.
Mayor Brimble
Good shot, Gadson. You got the big one.
Jingles
Jingles, are you hit?
Mel Sutter
Now's our chance, Hunter.
Mayor Brimble
Start out and run for it.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, Bill. Don't let him get away.
Mel Sutter
Come back here, you varmint.
Wild Bill Hickok
You'll never get that close again.
Mayor Brimble
Hickok.
Jingles
Jingles, where'd. Where'd he hit you?
Wild Bill Hickok
Oh, doggone it. Why'd I have to get in the way of that Jasper's lamp? Now they got away again.
Jingles
Oh, forget it, partner. We'll find them.
Mayor Brimble
Now where'd he get you?
Wild Bill Hickok
Oh, in the lake, Bill. I got no feeling in it at all.
Jingles
Then hang on to me. We'll get you in the cabin, get some light and work by.
Wild Bill Hickok
Oh, little old lead slug ain't gonna stop me, you know that.
Jingles
Take it easy, will you? I can go borrow buckboard from one of the ranches and haul you back to town.
Wild Bill Hickok
Buckboard? No, sir. I rode out here and I'll ride back. You ain't hauling me into town and no buckboard like a cart of wood.
Mayor Brimble
Gadson, you sure slowed up Hickok when you plug Jingles. They'd have had us cold in another minute.
Mel Sutter
Yeah, Hickok ain't so big. I wish I'd have plugged him instead.
Mayor Brimble
Coming into town. Better keep your eyes open. Those do right boys are still out to get us.
Mel Sutter
Yeah, I Was thinking about that. If they got any idea they're gonna run me out of town. They're bulldogging the wrong steer.
Mayor Brimble
They get some. Look, lights in the meeting hall.
Mel Sutter
Hey, there's a bunch of men in that hole.
Mayor Brimble
Shutter.
Jingles
Yeah?
Mayor Brimble
You reckon it's the do right crowd?
Mel Sutter
Well, I know one way to find out. Come on, we'll give a listen outside the window.
Mayor Brimble
Yeah, that's the do right gang, all right.
Mel Sutter
Yeah, this is good enough to hear what they're saying.
Mayor Brimble
Well, now that we're all here, gents, let's discuss how we're going to rid ourselves of Gadson and his crew of gunslingers. That's that Ted Sherman talking so big.
Mel Sutter
Yeah, talking too big. Come on.
Mayor Brimble
What are you going to do?
Mel Sutter
Getson, fix his wagon right now. We'll never have a better change. Let's go get the boys. We can wipe out those mey mouth do riders before Hickok gets back.
Mayor Brimble
Yeah, that's a good idea.
Mel Sutter
All the boys are here. Good. All right, all right, you guys. Come on now. Dry up and listen to me. It's come time for a showdown with those blasted do riders. All right then, fill your chambers and follow me.
Mayor Brimble
How do you figure to do this, boss?
Mel Sutter
Easy. I spotted that wagon full of dry hay on the high side above the hall. Just set a match to it and turn it loose.
Mayor Brimble
You mean burn down the meeting hall.
Wild Bill Hickok
With them in it?
Mel Sutter
Yeah, and if any of them run out, they'll gun them down.
Mayor Brimble
Oh, now, boss, that's wholesale slaughter.
Mel Sutter
You getting water in your back bones, Hunter?
Mayor Brimble
Oh, no.
Mel Sutter
I said it's going to be a showdown and I meant it. Now here's the wagon. I'll strike a match to it. All right, now you men surround that meeting hall.
Wild Bill Hickok
Shoot the first sick and it's me too. You low down salamanders.
Mel Sutter
All right, you got here just in time for the fireworks. Hickok, gun him down.
Wild Bill Hickok
You jugheads chewed ice head. Ain't none of your pack of coyotes got enough nerve to swap lead with Wild Bill Gadson?
Mel Sutter
Well, I have.
Jingles
Now, Gadson, I've been mighty easy with you, but your time's run out. Call Ted Sherman and his men jingle.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure, Bill. Hey, Ted. Ted Sherman. Bring your boys and come on out. We got some fish to fry.
Mel Sutter
Solder Blaster, hide. You got us into all this by shooting the mayor.
Wild Bill Hickok
You ain't blaming me, G. It was your idea.
Jingles
Well, you're both going to pay for it when the circuit judge gets through with you.
Mel Sutter
Circuit judge? We ain't waiting for Him? We got a judge right here. Judge Pitcher.
Jingles
That won't work, Gadson. We know Judge pictures under your thumb.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, and you can't buy the circuit judge. You'll get what's coming to you.
Mel Sutter
Oh, no, you don't. Come on, Sutter, let's make a break.
Jingles
Not so fast, mister. Hold it right there.
Mel Sutter
Why, you pinhorn hero. I'm gonna have the pleasure of busting in your paint.
Jingles
Like I said, Gatson, I've been right easy with you.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now you fold up, Sutter, unless you want some of the same.
Mayor Brimble
Mr. Hickok, looks like you and Jingles got here just in time.
Jingles
Take your boys round all these gun slicks up, Ted.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, we'll hurt them all off the jail and clean up your town with one big shipment to the end of the line.
Mayor Brimble
We sure do thank you, gents. Mr. Hickok.
Jingles
Well, I guess all you need now is a new mayor, Ted.
Wild Bill Hickok
I reckon Ted Sherman makes a good mayor, Wild Bill. Now you're talking, gents.
Jingles
Well, city elections are none of our businessmen, but you could do a lot worse than Ted Sherman.
Mayor Brimble
Well, let's elect him right now.
Wild Bill Hickok
Only in favor say aye. Well, that's about the quickest election I ever saw. Give him a speech, Ted.
Mayor Brimble
Well, well, gents, I've never hankered to be a politician and I don't reckon I'll start now. But if you want me for your mayor, that's one job I'll take. And I've just got one thing to say while Bill and Jingle just gave us a big hand in cleaning out these mavericks at Gadson.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hooray. Oh, excuse me.
Mayor Brimble
I. I figure that's the end of their kind in these parts for good. I thank you.
Jingles
That's a way to talk, Ted. Good luck, Mayor.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, we sure had a pile of pleasure working for you, Ted. Mr. Mayor, that is. And now that you are the mayor, I wish you'd pass a law that everybody's got to get some sleep at least once every 24 hours.

Episode: The Ten Minute Mayor | Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok
Host: Andrew Rhynes
Release Date: May 31, 2025
The Ten Minute Mayor transports listeners to the turbulent town of Brimful, a frontier settlement simmering with tension. The story kicks off with United States Marshal Wild Bill Hickok and his affable sidekick, Jingles, making their entrance into the uneasy town atmosphere.
Upon arriving in Brimful, Hickok and Jingles quickly sense the underlying unrest among the townsfolk. At [00:46], Wild Bill Hickok warns, “Hi, you folks hold on to your hats and pass those Kellogg Sugar Pops because here comes Guy Madison as Wild Bill Hickok and his pal Jingles. Which is me, Andy Devine.” Their presence signifies potential disruption in the already volatile environment.
The elected Mayor Brimble, whose tenure is humorously limited to ten minutes, steps forward to address the crowd. At [03:14], he confronts the antagonists, John Gadson and Mel Sutter, declaring, “You're on your way out. You and Sutter and the whole Gadsden gang. You've had your way with this town too long.” This bold statement sets the stage for the ensuing conflict as Mayor Brimble asserts his authority against the entrenched corruption.
Tensions escalate rapidly when Mel Sutter retaliates against Mayor Brimble’s accusations. At [04:01], Hickok intervenes, urging, “You'd never get us both, Sutter. Now drop that gun and stand.” This command leads to a fierce gunfight, vividly portrayed with lines like, “[04:11] Mel Sutter: Look out, Shutter,” and “[04:25] Mayor Brimble: Shut up.” The ensuing chaos culminates in the accidental shooting of Mayor Brimble by Sutter, plunging the town into further disorder.
Amidst the chaos, Judge Ted Sherman arrives to restore order. At [07:51], Mayor Brimble pleads, “Mr. Hickok, it's Ted Sherman. You all right in there?” Judge Sherman’s presence offers a glimmer of hope for a fair trial and the restoration of justice in Brimful.
Despite initial attempts to secure justice, Mel Sutter manages a daring escape. At [10:54], Hickok exclaims, “What are we waiting for? Why'd you practically tell Gadsden we found Sutter when you know doggone well we didn't.” This twist propels the narrative into a high-stakes pursuit, highlighting the relentless nature of law enforcement against persistent outlaws.
The climax unfolds as Hickok and Jingles confront Sutter and his gang in a dramatic showdown. Quotes like “[17:14] Wild Bill Hickok: Shoot the first sick and it's me too. You low down salamanders,” emphasize the intensity of the confrontation. Ultimately, with the help of Judge Sherman and the community’s support, Sutter and his cohorts are defeated. In a swift turn of events, Ted Sherman is unanimously elected as the new mayor, symbolizing the triumph of justice and rightful leadership.
The episode concludes with Wild Bill Hickok reflecting on the events, humorously suggesting, “I wish you'd pass a law that everybody's got to get some sleep at least once every 24 hours” ([19:42]). This lighthearted remark underscores the restoration of peace and order in Brimful, thanks to Hickok’s unwavering commitment to law and order.
The Ten Minute Mayor is a riveting installment in the Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok series, masterfully blending action, drama, and humor.
