The Cisco Kid in our exciting story Wild by Tomahawk, the land of the Nez Perce Indian lies far to the north of the desert country. It is a rich, bountiful land filled with sparkling streams and wild game. When the greedy eyes of Jack Coughlan beheld this land, his lust knew no bounds. Through devious connections, he was able to exert pressure on a corrupt Indian agent in Washington. And the land of the Nez Perce was declared open for exploration and settlement. This meant war with the Indians, and it was exactly what Jack wanted. As our story opens, Jack Coghan and his men are waiting to ambush an army quarter. Last two supply wagons. The army wagon's coming, Jake. Who there? How many troopers from the escort Rod? I came to six troopers and two soldiers on the wagon. The driver and the guard. Good. All right, boys. There's only eight of them. When that army wagon comes into sight, swoop down and kill them all. They sure don't have much of a guard for a gold shipment, do they, Jack? Who said anything about it being a gold shipment? Well, I. You don't think around here. I do all the thinking. Here comes that wagon now. All right, boys, let's get him. It's fighters. Get a boy. Kill your gun. We got four up with the first volley. Kill the other four. Good. Good. I'll take care of those eight troopers. They'll never fill the uniform again. God. You pull up the team. I'll get him, Jack. Couple of you boys get one of those boxes out of the wagon. Break it open. Now, what's in them boxes is so important, Jack? You'll see. Poor loud the horns for. But it's only army uniforms. That's why I wanted this wagon. I handpicked you men because you were fast with a gun. Weren't too particular about how you use it. That's right. We joined with you, Jack. Cause you told us we'd get rich. And you will, if you carry out my orders. When we get the Nez Perce Indians to go on the warpath, the army will have to fight them. The Indians will be put on the reservation and their land will belong to whoever claims it. And we're gonna be the hombres to claim it. Right. And when settlers come to this part of the country, you control the land and the settlers. Yeah, but what's in it for you? For me? I'm gonna rule this territory. I may even set up my own state. Now, we're with you, Jack. Right down the line. What's your first step? Put on those uniforms. You boys are gonna be United States Cavalry. And your first duty is to provoke a little Indian trouble. Remember, if you kill a few of those redskins, you can be certain the rest of them will go on a war. I know you and Pancho came here with good intention, Cisco. But I won't have any civilians mixing into army business. Cisco. Not mixing, General. Cisco tried to keep the Indians in the warpath. I came to see you, General Howard, because Chief Joseph of the Neighbors are friends of mine. Did Chief Joseph send you, Cisco? C. Gerald, These young warriors are very mad that the government is taking their land. They want war immediately. What's the Chief's attitude about war? The Chief is a wise man. He realizes the futility of warring against the Army. Even I'd want to see his people skill. Yeah, neither do I, Pancho. I'm faced with the necessity of carrying out orders that I believe are unfair. Then I can tell Chief Joseph that the army will leave the Nez Perce in peace. Confound it, Cisco, I'd like to do that. But orders are orders, and I'm a soldier. I have to carry them out. When the hombre is killed, he's a red or white. He's going to be the General Sport. That fault weighs heavily on my conscience. Tell me, Cisco, can you keep the Indians from the war path for a while? I will try, General. I will talk to Chief Joseph. Now. I'm going to try again to get that land evacuation order rescinded. That'd be good for the Indians in the army. However, General, if I am to succeed in keeping the Indians from war, I must be able to tell them that no action will be taken against them. You have my word for it, Cisco. No army unit will move against the Indians until I hear from Washington. Can it? I'll tell Cisco before the army moves. I will. It's imperative that the peace be kept on this frontier. It must be kept, General, to prevent the bloodshed of many people. First, in those uniforms, the boys look like a genuine cavalry detachment. Rob, we were lucky to find that cavalry guide in Pinch Garrion. What's the letter G stand for? In the white part of the play, the initial G stands for T Troop. The figure eight in the red part of the guidance stands for the 8 Cavalry. And that flag belongs to Troop G. 8 Cavalry. Correct. And it adds the authentic touch to my plan. It sure helps to make the boys look like real soldiers. They're going to be real soldiers, Ralph. They're the nucleus for my private army when I take over this territory. But how you gonna get them Indians riled up now? Going after that band of Appaloosa horses they're so proud of? You mean those big horses with the leopard spots and the hang poop facial about them the only have since before any of this territory was explored. And when we rustle them horses in these uniforms, the Nez Perce will think it's the army doing it. They'll put on their war bonnets for sure. Not even a Cisco Kid will be able to stop them. Cisco Kid? What's he doing here? He's trying to maintain peace between the army and the Nez Perce. From what I've heard of him, he might be able to do it. When those horses are stolen, no one will be able to keep those Indians off the war path. They believe bad luck will come to them if any of those horses fall into white men's hands. We're getting close to the Indian camp, Jack. There are the horses on the outskirts of the village. Now, boys, don't be afraid to let the Indians see you. Round up that bunch of spotted horses and drive them off. We'll make sure those guards don't escape. Kill them all. Be sure to let the rest of the village see you. This is going to start the biggest Indian uprising this country has ever seen. Cross sabers. Forward. Why Chief Joseph want you to meet him here? I do not know, Chico. We will soon find out. Here comes the chief now. What is this, Chief Joseph? Well, there s Pancho. Chief Joseph. Chief Joseph glad to see his friends Cisco Kid and Pancho. Why Chief Joseph not let Cisco and Pancho meet him at the Indian military? Young braves would have killed the Cisco Kid and Pancho had they ridden into the village. But why, Chief? We have always been friends to your people, Chief Joseph know this. After the great evil that has befallen the Nez Perce, no white man is safe in Indian village. What is great evil, Chief Joseph? The sacred horses of the Nez Verse have been stolen by soldiers, Chief Joseph sure of this? Many of my people saw their uniforms. I am sure the army would not do this to you, Chief Joseph. General Howard gave me his word that the army would make no move against your people until he had first notified me. My people not make mistakes. Soldiers steal sacred Appaloos hostage. Now young braves want war with white man. As chief of tribe, Joseph must lead them. There must be some mistake, Chief. Give me time to ride back to General Howard's headquarters and ask him for an explanation. Only one way to stop bloodshed between white man and red man. Cisco did tell General Howard. Appaloosa horses must be returned when sun rises and sets again one day. That's not enough time, Cisco. You have to make it enough time. Adios, Chief Joseph. We Ride. Come, Pancho. Up. Yellow. You promised that the army would make no move against the Indians, General Howard. I've kept that promise, Cisco. Chief Jose steal the Appaloosa horse. That accounts for those uniforms that were stolen. We just received news of it. The troopers guarding the wagon that carried the uniforms were found dead. The same bandidos what? Steal the army uniforms? Steal the horses from the Indians? It would seem, General, that someone is very anxious to stir up trouble between the Indians and the army. A hunch to that someone might be so. A land grabber by the name of Jack Coughlin. I have heard of him. What's his? It is Jack Coughlin and a corrupt Indian agent are responsible for the Nez Bears having to move off their land. That's the man, Cisco. If we can locate him and his gang, we'll find those horses in the army uniforms. You don't have the time, General Joseph. Give us one day to bring the Appaloosa horses back to Nezber. That means you only have until sundown tonight, aren't you? Now ride back to the Indian camp. General. Indians go to Kira, Cisco. We must tell them what we have learned. I'll call out two troops. Of course. Cavalry immediately. Cisco, we're going to try to find those horses and see that they return to the N fierce. You'll have to find those horses, General, if we are to defeat the evil purpose of that coyote. Jack Cocklin. Sun is down, Chief Joseph. Your friend Cisco Kid has not returned the sacred leopard spotted horses. Hey, c. It's wiser for young warriors to heed my counsel. No. Young braves take war path. Soldiers steal sacred horses. Soldiers must die. If you kill soldiers, more will come to take their place. Warriors will kill all soldiers who come to our land. Chief Joseph refuses to lead his people unf of certain death. If Chief Joseph is afraid, there are others who will lead. Wait. Let alone silence my people. Siskovki drives here now. Listen to the Cisco kids. My people, he is our friend. No white man is friends to Indian. Chief Joseph speaks the truth. Cisco Kid not speak truth. Listen to me. General Howard knows who stole your horses and kill your braves. General know it was soldiers who kill braves and steal horses. That's not so. You'll listen to Cisco. Listen no more. My brother Cisco Kid speaks with forked tongue. He tell you lies. Why should have said I lie. Red clown. Cisco Kid does not speak with a fork tongue. Find that red cloud shows hamahawk into the ground. Cisco. The challenge for me to fight him. Buncho. Well, this is Hooky. Do I will fight Red Cloud. Chief Joseph. Red Cloud will kill Cisco Kid. Death of Cisco Kid will prove he lies. What weapon do you choose, Red Cloud? Tomahawk. Cisco not fight with a tomahawk before. You have to do it now, Poncho. I do not accept his challenge. And two years ago in the war part. And that fight with Red Cloud. Cisco here, my friend. His weapon. This Chief Joseph's own tomahawk. Gracious, Chief Joseph. Stand back, my people. Cisco not do this. Cisco learn how to fight with the tomahawk. There's nothing else I can do now, Pancho. I'm ready. Red Cloud. Red Cloud ready. Cisco Kid ready to kill. Over here. And it is certain that the inexperienced hand of the Cisco Kid is no match for the mighty young warrior Red Cloud, who rushes at Cisco with his razor edge Tomahawk poised for the death blow. They killed the soldaders with guarded uniforms. Even like they killed the braves. What got your horses? What soldiers do about evil men? That Cisco Kid did talk the engines out of hitting the warpath. Cisco had a fight with one of the braves and he beat him afterwards. Him Indians listened to what he had to say. What does this go tell the Indians? That the general knows we're the ones who stole the uniforms and the horses. And that he's out looking for us now with two troops of cavalry. Cisco's trying to wreck all my plans. Him and some of them Indians are on their way to join General Howard's forces now. I saw him leave camp. How many were in the buck Hell? Release Date: July 15, 2025
Host: Andrew Rhynes
In this thrilling episode of Old Time Radio Westerns, host Andrew Rhynes brings to life an intense adventure featuring the legendary Cisco Kid. Through expertly restored audio, listeners are transported to the tumultuous frontier where loyalty, betrayal, and bravery intertwine in the struggle between settlers and the Nez Perce Indians.
The episode, titled Trial by Tomahawk, delves into a plot orchestrated by the conniving Jack Coughlan. Coughlan, driven by greed, aims to seize the bountiful land of the Nez Perce by inciting war between the tribe and the U.S. Army. Utilizing corrupt connections, he manipulates an Indian agent to open Nez Perce lands for settlement, thereby setting the stage for conflict.
The story begins with Jack Coughlan and his men plotting to ambush an army supply wagon. Coughlan instructs his men:
“[01:25] Coughlan: There’s only eight of them. When that army wagon comes into sight, swoop down and kill them all.”
Coughlan’s plan is to disguise his men in stolen army uniforms, making it appear as though the Army is responsible for attacking the Nez Perce. This deception is designed to provoke the tribe into waging war, thereby clearing the way for settlers like Coughlan to claim the land.
Cisco Kid and Pancho arrive, intent on preventing the impending conflict. They confront General Howard, seeking to uphold an agreement to keep peace:
“[07:40] Cisco Kid: I came to see you, General Howard, because Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce are friends of mine.”
General Howard is torn between following orders and his sense of justice. He acknowledges the gravity of the situation:
“[10:15] General Howard: It's imperative that the peace be kept on this frontier. It must be kept to prevent the bloodshed of many people.”
Cisco pledges to negotiate with Chief Joseph to avert war, demonstrating his commitment to peace.
As tensions escalate, Chief Joseph meets with Cisco and Pancho. Suspicion arises when sacred Appaloosa horses are stolen amidst the chaos:
“[21:50] Chief Joseph: The sacred horses of the Nez Perce have been stolen by soldiers.”
Cisco Kid deduces that Jack Coughlan is behind the theft, aiming to incite anger and distrust. The plot thickens as Red Cloud, a young and passionate warrior, challenges Cisco to a duel:
“[35:10] Red Cloud: The challenge for me is to fight him.”
The episode reaches its climax with a dramatic tomahawk duel between Cisco Kid and Red Cloud. The confrontation is tense, showcasing Cisco’s resolve and Red Cloud’s fury:
“[44:20] Red Cloud: Red Cloud ready. Cisco Kid ready to kill.”
Despite the intense battle, Cisco manages to defuse the situation, revealing the truth about Coughlan’s deceit to the Nez Perce:
“[56:35] Cisco Kid: The army did not take your leopard spotted horses. They were stolen by a band of evil men. Evil men wear uniform of soldiers.”
With the truth unveiled, General Howard and his cavalry arrive, capturing Coughlan and his gang. Peace is restored as the stolen horses are returned, and the Indian evacuation order is rescinded:
“[1:10:45] General Howard: I received a letter from Washington rescinding the Indian evacuation order. And there’s first remaining on hunting grounds.”
Chief Joseph expresses gratitude towards Cisco and his companions:
“[1:12:30] Chief Joseph: We owe you our thanks, Nez Perce. Give appaloosa horse.”
Cisco and Pancho, acknowledging their bond with the Nez Perce, decide to continue their journey, embodying the spirit of true heroes.
Jack Coughlan: “[01:25] There's only eight of them. When that army wagon comes into sight, swoop down and kill them all.”
Cisco Kid: “[07:40] I came to see you, General Howard, because Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce are friends of mine.”
General Howard: “[10:15] It's imperative that the peace be kept on this frontier. It must be kept to prevent the bloodshed of many people.”
Red Cloud: “[35:10] The challenge for me is to fight him.”
Cisco Kid: “[44:20] Red Cloud ready. Cisco Kid ready to kill.”
Cisco Kid: “[56:35] Evil men wear uniform of soldiers.”
Chief Joseph: “[1:12:30] We owe you our thanks, Nez Perce. Give appaloosa horse.”
