A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a.
Narrator
Hearty high O Silver, the Lone Ranger. It's.
Lone Ranger
With his faithful Indian companion, Tle, the daring and resourceful masked writer of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early western United States. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the path come the thundering hoof beats of the great horse Silver. The Lone Ranger rides again.
Narrator
Let's go big boat to it. Hooray.
Lone Ranger
Jack Lewis owns one of the largest ranches in the territory. And branded with the help of his wife Kate, who had been born and raised in the rough wild country of the far west. Kate could ride and shoot as well as any man. And when she and her husband adopted an orphaned nephew, Larry Lewis, Kate was determined the boy would grow up to be one of the best riders and one of the best shots in the territory.
Kate Lewis
By thunder, Jack, I'm going to see to it that little Larry grows up to be one of the shootingest bride. And the sound plays in the West. You make a real man of him.
Narrator
Well, with you trading him, Kate, I'd begin betting on him right now. Yes, sir.
Lone Ranger
Larry lived up to the hopes of his uncle and aunt. And at 25 was a tall, broad shouldered fellow. He was as fearless as Kate herself and even better with a gun and in the saddle. Late one afternoon, Kate and Larry were returning to the big Lewis ranch house after a trip to town. As they turned off the trail and rode in toward the house, they were startled by the sound of distant shoot.
Kate Lewis
Harry, did you hear that?
Narrator
Yeah. That shooting came from the direction of the ranch house.
Kate Lewis
Aunt Kate, something's happening there. Get your guns handy and let's get going. Right. Get up there.
Narrator
Come on. Come on, get up. I don't see anybody near the ranch. Huh? You?
Kate Lewis
I see three horsemen riding the back trail reefing the hose.
Narrator
Yeah, I see them now, but they're too far away for us to make out who they are.
Kate Lewis
If we're up to something, you can bet our hat.
Narrator
Down, boy.
Kate Lewis
Come on.
Narrator
Yeah, right with you. Holy smoke. There's Uncle Jack lying on the floor.
Kate Lewis
He hurt? He's been shot.
Narrator
Jack.
Kate Lewis
Jack. What happened?
Narrator
Robbery.
Kate Lewis
Leave it to me.
Narrator
Rob. The safe. Cattle money. I came in, caught up and shot me down.
Kate Lewis
Get some water quick, Larry.
Narrator
Sure, right away.
Kate Lewis
We'll get you into bed, Jack, and fix your wound. Larry, arrive for the doctor in town.
Narrator
No use, kid. That is bad. It took me by surprise.
Kate Lewis
Easy, Jack. You'll be all right. Help me raise him up.
Narrator
Sure.
Kate Lewis
Here's water.
Narrator
I'm done for, Dave.
Kate Lewis
No. Who were they? What did they look like?
Narrator
Three of them. One tall, red headed. Another heavy, short scarring wrist. The leader mask. Go on.
Kate Lewis
Go on. Jack.
Narrator
What about the leader, honey? Get. Get alone. Ranger?
Kate Lewis
Yes, he's.
Narrator
Larry.
Kate Lewis
Larry, get a doctor. Hurry.
Narrator
No, no, Aunt Kate. It's too late. A doctor can't do him any good now. I can't believe it.
Kate Lewis
Jack gone.
Narrator
Ollie. He only came a little sooner. Come on, Aunt Kate.
Kate Lewis
Poor Jack. If I could ever get my hands on those dirtish childs who did this.
Narrator
Oh, wait. Wait a. I just remembered something.
Kate Lewis
What did you remember?
Narrator
You heard what Uncle Jack said, that the leader was masked. He said to get the Lone Ranger, whoever that is.
Kate Lewis
Oh, I can tell you that, Larry. He's an hombre who wears a black mask, a white step and rides a big white stallion. I saw him once and Jack told me a lot about him. But I never thought he went in for robbing and killing.
Narrator
But Uncle Jack said the leader wore a mask. And then he said to get the Lone Ranger.
Kate Lewis
Then you think he meant the leader.
Narrator
Was the Lone Ranger? Yeah. Don't you?
Kate Lewis
Come to think of it, I guess that's what Jack did me.
Narrator
Aunt Kate. I'm gonna hunt until I find that masked man and see that he pays for what he and his men did Uncle Jack.
Kate Lewis
It'll be a hard one to find.
Narrator
I reckon I'll think of a plan that may cause him to hunt me. So that someday we'll meet.
Kate Lewis
What kind of plan?
Narrator
I'll tell you about it later, Auntie. Right now I. I'd better go for the coroner. Then tell the man what's happening.
Lone Ranger
It was three days later when Larry entered the living room of the ranch house and called out to Kate, who was in another room.
Narrator
Aunt Kate? Be there in a minute, Larry. I brought around that fried white Arabian from the north range.
Kate Lewis
I Can't see why you want to give up riding your palomino after all the trouble you went.
Narrator
That white horse is part of my plan.
Kate Lewis
Yes, for land sake. For a minute I.
Narrator
Is this anything like the outfit the Lone Ranger wears in cape?
Kate Lewis
Only just about like it. You're just about his size too.
Narrator
And this get up. And with this black mask and the white Arabian. He ought to start people talking. Don't you think so?
Kate Lewis
It sure will. But didn't you tell the sheriff about the masked man and the other two hombres?
Narrator
I told the sheriff Uncle Jack said there was three men. But I didn't tell him more than that.
Kate Lewis
Why not?
Narrator
Uncle Jack brought me up the same way. He would have raised the sun if he'd had one. I'm gonna do what he'd expect of Usand. I'm gonna do a personal job of tracking down those killers and sending them over to the law.
Kate Lewis
Well now, I don't doubt but that you can do it.
Narrator
I can ride as well as anybody. I'm a good shot. And I'm not afraid to face any hombre in this territory.
Kate Lewis
Sure, Larry, I know all that. But how do you.
Narrator
I'll search every cafe within miles around. I needed the red headed outlaw or the one with a scar on his wrist. And I'll force him to take it to Ballon. Rangers, man.
Kate Lewis
But why are you dressing like the masked man?
Narrator
I figured that the news will spread when he hears someone dressed like him is riding the territory and searching the cafes. He'll be tempted to search me on. I'll get the best of him somehow.
Kate Lewis
You'll need somebody along to make sure he don't get the best of you. Larry, you can't tackle a job alone.
Narrator
But who could I trust to take along?
Kate Lewis
Me, that's who.
Narrator
You? But you're a woman. It wouldn't be.
Kate Lewis
I can pass for a man if I lower my voice and don't talk too much. Of course, I dress the Mr. Part.
Narrator
What? Answer?
Kate Lewis
I taught you all you know, Larry, about riding and cheating.
Narrator
All right, come on if you want to. We won't return to this spread until we get all three of them. Especially at Lone Ranger.
Lone Ranger
During the next few days, Larry, who had fixed up according to his idea of what the Lone Ranger looked like, set out with Kate, who was dressed as a man. They visited one cafe after another in the nearby town.
Narrator
The best. Let's line them up and look them over. All right, you Aries, line up over there with your hand tie and be quick about it. All right, line up on you. We're hunting for a couple of ombre. Come on get moving. He's this same man Sunry who held up the cafe over question. Don't let him get away with it. Here. Gun him down somebody. I'm gun it out. Who right now. Anybody else want to try a shot at me? You do, you'll get the same.
Kate Lewis
Come on, let's get going.
Narrator
The arn in here. That's right, the a. Let's go. All right, stand where you are. Don't anyone try to follow.
Lone Ranger
And so it was in town after town as Larry and Pete continued their relentless search for the men who had shot Jack Lewis. One evening in their camp in the hills outside the town of Stockton the Lone Ranger looked up as Taco rode campo.
Narrator
Fellas seem to be in a hurry Tahoe. Let me bring news. What is it you hear men say? Mask man wearing white hats riding white horse hold up cafes in towns nearby. Someone posing as me. Get it? Ah, you have other fellow with them. Then go into cafes, line everybody up, look them over and then leave. You mean they don't rob anyone? That's right. Then not take gold. Just look at men then leave.
Lone Ranger
That's strange.
Narrator
No one find out reason. One who wear masks may be quick and draw and shoot great ride plenty good. Looks like them hunt for someone. I think we'll have a search of our own. Tono, I'd like to meet that impostor and find out what's going on. It seems logical that sooner or later they'll hit the cafe in Stockton and.
Lone Ranger
Keep a lookout for a while.
Narrator
That's good idea. Go to town right now. I'll wait on the outskirts and you.
Lone Ranger
Go to the cafe to watch.
Narrator
Here's over. Very curious to know what's behind it all.
Lone Ranger
For several nights the Lone Ranger and Copple kept watch on the cafe in Stockton. Then one night as Coppo stood at the end of the bar in the Stockton cafe it happened.
Narrator
All right. Don't move anybody. Get the t. Is that mass omry again? Yeah, the one who's going to every cafe in these parts. Better show these bad. I'll line them up then we'll look them over. Get your hands up and line up over there. An ornery looking bunch. I still don't see the ones we're hunting. Hey, look at this hombre. Well it's all red headed and tough with them, huh? Hey, what is this anyhow? You haven't got the right. Here. You keep them covered. Now look here, you take Your gun and you take us to your leader if you want to live. Now start walking out the door, redhead. Listen, you can't come here. We are here. We're taking you with us. Get moving and be quick about it. The rest of you, don't move or you'll get some lead. All right, let's go. Get after them. Don't let them get away with this. Hold on, men. Don't open that door. You might get some. There they go. Come on.
Lone Ranger
While the crowd pushed outside after Larry and Kate Tahoe, who had been watching from the rear of the cafe, went out the back door. A few minutes later, he joined the Lone Ranger at the edge of town. He told the Lone Ranger what had happened.
Narrator
I heard the commotion. The riders run out the other end of town. Not right. But there's something else. King of Sabi.
Lone Ranger
What's that?
Narrator
When masked feller, full redheaded man out of line. You see other fellas, short, heavy set fellas sneak out back door. Him ride back trail. That's interesting. Here, Silver, you pale fellow with Mass. No, we'll follow the man who rode the back trail. You think him lead us to Masseller? Before the night's over, I think we'll come face to face with a man.
Lone Ranger
Who'S posing as me.
Narrator
Then we'll have a showdown.
Lone Ranger
Easy. The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger adventure. Before the next exciting themes. Please permit us to pause for just a few moments now to continue. TTO watching in the cafe had seen the hold up. He had also seen a short, heavyset man lead by the back door. As Larry and Kate went out the front with Red. Tuttle reported matters to the Lone Ranger. And they started out to trail the man who had sneaked out the back door of the cafe. Meantime, one of the men from the cafe hurriedly entered the sheriff's office.
Narrator
The sheriff? There's been a hold up at the cafe. Hold up to say. Well, not exactly that. You see a masked man, another ombre.
Lone Ranger
Busted in with drawn guns a little while ago. They lined us all up against the walls.
Narrator
Then after looking us all over, they picked out a tall red headed ombre and well, and made him go along with them. Must be the. The same two that's been busting into cafes all over the territory. They got a report on a tall masked man. Another tough looking hombre doing that sort of thing. Yeah, it must have been the same too. Then, honey, they didn't rob all of you. But part I can't make out. Must be some reason why they do like they do. Well, I remember hearing the masked man say only looking bunch but I don't see the ones we're hunting. Then all of a sudden the other one grabbed a hold of the big.
Lone Ranger
Red head and pulled him out of the line.
Narrator
You don't say. Yeah, and then he said something about taking them to his leader if Red had wanted to live.
Lone Ranger
And they forced him to go along with him.
Narrator
Well, I reckon this is my chance to track down that mass Dummy. Look, we're attempted to locate that deputy of mine. Tell him to get enough men to form a fortune. All right Sheriff. Tell him to have the men meet me out front. Within five minutes we'll pick up the trail of them three armres and before a long bite and this I'll have that masked outlaw and his friend behind bars. Now get going. Hurry it up, will you?
Lone Ranger
Time. The Lone ranger and cattle had no difficulty following the man who had gone out the back door of the cafe. The moon was bright and the trail was clear. As they trailed the short heavy set man, they noticed that he rode into a small canyon. When they reached the canyon, they own range. They're pulled range taking a trail up the side of the canyon. Not right.
Narrator
It been easier to ride the trail.
Lone Ranger
From the other side to reach the.
Narrator
Point he's going to.
Lone Ranger
Why you think you not go other way?
Narrator
Might be as the others are riding that trail. This man wanted to get there first for some reason.
Lone Ranger
What we do now, we'll continue to follow him. Come on. Reaching the top of the canon wall, the stuffy horseman stopped before a shack hidden in a pump of three.
Narrator
Oh, holy. Oh, hi Joe. That mass man came to the cafe at Stocking Stu. I'm sure he's after it. What makes you sure? Because he and his partner took Red with him, that's why. Red? Yeah, you remember we heard they was going from cafe to cafe looking at people's wrists and taking off their hats. You said yourself they might be looking for me with my scar or for Red. What's happened to Red? I figured they might make Red lead them back to our hide out here. So I sneaked out and rode the back trail to warn you. Red told me sneak away. Good. We'll go out and wait for him to come up the main trail. Red will bring them that way if you have to. We'll catch those. I'm braced by surprise. Now let's go.
Lone Ranger
Meantime, Larry and Kate, with the outlaw, Red riding between them, followed the main trail toward the hideout.
Narrator
What if he isn't Taking us where we told him to. He's better if he knows what's good for I swear this is the way to the hideout. It sure better be. Trail turns to the right just beyond those big boulders ahead there. Shack is just beyond. Good. Make sure you don't do any signaling. Bird sound out of you and you'll feel less.
Lone Ranger
As the three approached the big boulders, they slowed their horses. Then as they passed the boulders and turned on the trail, Larry and Kate were suddenly startled by a sharp command from behind them.
Narrator
You sure must have thought I was a fool to give in so easy. I knew I was leading you both into a trap. There's this track just ahead.
Lone Ranger
Stop there.
Narrator
Get off your horses. We'll do inside for a little talking. I was afraid something like this had happened. We're not licked yet. All right. R we keep him covered. You take a gun. It'll be a pleasure. I got him good. You two hom just walk into that shack if we come explain. Come on, Lur. Right. Red, take our guns with you and keep watch outside. Joe and I'll handle this. All I can do. So you're the masked gander. We've been searching the cafes, huh? Get your leader here. He's the one I'll talk. I'm the leader of this gang.
Kate Lewis
You?
Narrator
So you're the Lone Ranger. And without the mask. What's he talking about, Stu? He must be local. He got me on that one. Jones. Talking about masks. You take this off right now. Keep in trouble. Jones. Right Mask. What? What A jumping cat. Said she's Larry Lewis. Oh, you know who he is, huh? Yeah.
Kate Lewis
Maybe you know who I am.
Narrator
Look. Hey. Well, I'll a woman. That hat hit all her hair. Yeah, but why did she.
Kate Lewis
I'm Jack Lewis's widow. Killed my husband. Since someday I'll see all three of you hanged.
Narrator
Kate, I'm sure sorry things do not like at home.
Kate Lewis
But get it, Mary. Lazy Hand and Lord for the time being.
Narrator
So you two know about it, huh? Left bad. Mighty bad. What are we going to do with them, Sue? But since they know too much to be roaming around loose. Oh, yeah. But what are we going to do with them? That'll take a little thinking. So they're going to be mighty sorry they know so much and that they came here looking for.
Lone Ranger
As the outlaws inside this track discussed the situation, two figures crouched beneath the back window of the chest, listening and watching.
Narrator
That's Jack Lewis's widow and nephew. Nephew was posing as me. Ah, then Pink Lone Ranger, one of outlaws who kill her husband. I don't know how they got that idea. Right now she thinks that outlaw stew is me without my mask.
Lone Ranger
Those two in a bad spot maybe.
Narrator
All right. You too. Sneaking tie outs. Don't move. Got two guns at your back. Hey, Joe, come here. Joe, come quick. What's up, Rich? I found these two armories here at the window. Take them inside. Sure. Hey, look. One of them dressed just like that Lewis fellow was dressed. Mask quite hat nor little savvy that. Come on, you two, get inside.
Lone Ranger
Come along with us.
Narrator
Look what we found outside. What do you know? Another mask on, white hat and everything. Just like young Lewis was wearing. But hey, I'll bet he's.
Kate Lewis
That's him, Larry. He's the Lone Ranger.
Narrator
Yeah. Keep him covered, boy. Then you weren't in this thing at all.
Lone Ranger
That's right.
Narrator
But when my uncle was dying, he said, get the Lone Ranger. I thought I knew your uncle was a friend. He must have meant to get your help in tracking down these outlaws. I'm sure that's what he meant, Larry. Sorry. I thought if I made up like you, it'd bring you out of hiding all right. At least it brought us together with the men who killed Jack Lewis. We're together all right. That just makes four to get rid of instead of two bigger guns. Red. Sure.
Lone Ranger
Red has been standing behind the Lone Ranger and Toto. He holstered his gun as he moved forward, knowing that sue and Joe facing the masked man at Indian, had them covered from the front as Red team up behind him. The Lonely Ranger fought fast and as Red reached out, the masked man dropped his hands in a lightning like movement, grabbing Red's right rib and pulling the Alpha around in front of him. The move had been unexpected and quick, so that with a fast draw, the Lone Ranger, shielded by Red's body, commanded the situation with a gun at Red's back.
Narrator
Look out, Red. Stay where you are, both of you. Hey, look, the Indian has his gun too. Dude, I'll shoot if you or Joe shoot. You'll hit me? That's right, they will. You deserve it, you clumsy Toyota. Other fell gun. Maybe him. You both got me coming. Got their guns, fellow Guns when we came in, he get them from Redhead. Now you take them. Now you get over there with the others. Stew somebody for Robin Lewis. He planned to get over there.
Lone Ranger
A short distance back along the trail which Larry and Kate had followed with Red. The sheriff and the posse rode along until they reached the big boulders. There they rang to a halt.
Narrator
Look there. Two horsemen came out from behind those boulders and rode along with the other three. I swear I don't savvy all this at all. Maybe somebody was awaiting there behind the.
Lone Ranger
Boulders and ambush Sheriff. They'll make sense.
Narrator
Like I say, that's the way it looks to me Ryan. Crazy. Should anyone want a wait in ambush with them outlaws. Unless it was the law. By thunder the whole thing's crazy. Masked man riding around busting into cafes here and there, lining people up. They're never robbing every one. Outlaw gangs are war and against another. Did you ever think of that? Could be that that red headed fella was with a gang the masked humbly fell out with or something the case. By Jiminy, we might catch two gangs at the same time. That'll be a feather in your character isn't we did. We won't catch nobody. We just sit here in the saddle jawing about it. Now you don't try to tell me what to do. After all I'm just trying to figure this thing out. But I'm the sheriff. I don't need you or anyone else to tell me what. Hey, did you hear that shot? Yeah, came from up ahead a way. Come on, we'll find out about it right now. Get up.
Lone Ranger
Meantime, after the crooks were lined up and their hands tied, Kate spoke.
Kate Lewis
We'll have to get them to the sheriff at Stockton.
Narrator
You should have let the sheriff may.
Lone Ranger
Posse get after these men. Larry. There's a risky thing for you and.
Narrator
Mrs. Lewis to do Mr. And Kate is a match for any man she can ride. She'll get it.
Kate Lewis
Forget it Larry. Mess things up plenty.
Lone Ranger
Yeah sweetheart, that's all right now.
Kate Lewis
Wonderful isn't it to do what you've done.
Narrator
Hey listen. A lot of riders coming this way.
Lone Ranger
Keep these trucks covered Larry.
Narrator
We're leaving now. Probably the sheriff must possibly haul you from doctor.
Kate Lewis
Oh but wait. You don't have to go just because.
Narrator
Adios Larry.
Kate Lewis
Really.
Narrator
And to think I had the nerve to pose at. What's going on here?
Kate Lewis
There they are Sheriff. The men who robbed and killed my husband.
Narrator
Dude did the shooting. Shut up you fool. Why should I? They were going to plug me a while ago. You double cross and pull cat. You pill Louis and you know it. Well, we'll take all three of you in. We trail that masked man here. Larry, where did he trail here? Sheriff was really me. There's the mask and the white sketch. I thought a man who dressed like that was the leader of the gang who killed Uncle Jack. Well I. You were the one who went in all them cafes there. That's right. We were looking for the men Uncle Jack described. We never took anything. We found one of them tonight. Well that sure is a joke on these alert they weren't fooling at the.
Kate Lewis
End they were going to kill Larry and me.
Narrator
This old mate said how did he was saved by the mask man. The one I made up like he was a tall handsome hom and quick as lightning with a gun.
Kate Lewis
I get it now.
Narrator
When you talk about an ombre like that, I know just who you mean cuz there's only one like him.
Kate Lewis
You mean you really know who Larry's talking about?
Narrator
Yeah, I was fooled for a while. But now I know he's the Lone Ranger. It.

Episode: Two of a Kind | The Lone Ranger (05-10-50)
Host: Andrew Rhynes
Release Date: January 31, 2025
In this gripping episode of the Old Time Radio Westerns podcast, host Andrew Rhynes transports listeners to the rugged landscapes of the early Western United States. The story centers around Jack Lewis, the proprietor of one of the largest ranches in the territory, his formidable wife Kate, and their adopted nephew, Larry Lewis. Kate, described as "born and raised in the rough wild country of the far west," is dedicated to ensuring Larry grows into a skilled rider and sharpshooter. As Kate emphatically declares at [03:52], “By thunder, Jack, I'm going to see to it that little Larry grows up to be one of the shootingest bride.”
The tranquility of the Lewis ranch is shattered one late afternoon when Kate and Larry return from town, only to discover that Uncle Jack has been violently murdered during a robbery. At [04:36], Kate urgently informs Larry, “Aunt Kate, something's happening there. Get your guns handy and let's get going.” The assailants are revealed to be three masked horsemen who open fire, leaving Uncle Jack lifeless. As Kate tends to her wounded husband, the gravity of the situation becomes clear: “Robbery. Rob. The safe. Cattle money.” [05:12]
Determined to avenge Uncle Jack's death, Kate and Larry delve into the mystery of the masked robbers. Uncle Jack’s last words hint at the involvement of a legendary figure: “...get the Lone Ranger, whoever that is.” [07:03] Kate recalls, “He's an hombre who wears a black mask, a white steed and rides a big white stallion.” This revelation propels Larry to adopt the guise of the Lone Ranger himself to lure out the outlaws responsible for the tragedy.
Larry, embodying the Lone Ranger persona, and Kate, disguised as a man, embark on a relentless quest across neighboring towns. Their strategy involves visiting local cafes, stirring up the presence of the Lone Ranger to attract the attention of the masked gang. At [08:26], Kate muses, “Only just about like it. You're just about his size too.” Their efforts lead to tense encounters as they confront various outlaws, seeking information about the masked men.
As the hunt intensifies, the duo gathers crucial clues about the masked gang's activities. They learn that the gang members methodically rob cafes without taking valuables, instead focusing on observing and identifying potential targets. At [12:26], the Lone Ranger (Larry) reflects, “It been easier to ride the trail.” Their pursuit brings them closer to the truth, uncovering that the masked leaders are searching for someone specific, possibly connected to Larry's scar.
The climax unfolds in a dramatic showdown at a secluded shack. After tracking the masked men to their hideout, Larry and Kate confront them, leading to a tense standoff. At [21:24], Kate boldly declares, “You? ... I'm Jack Lewis's widow. Killed my husband. Since someday I'll see all three of you hanged.” The confrontation reveals a twist: one of the outlaws is none other than the Lone Ranger himself, unmasking the complex web of deception and vengeance.
In the aftermath of the showdown, the true identities of the characters come to light, intertwining loyalty and justice. Larry's quest culminates in a deeper understanding of his role and the legacy of the Lone Ranger. The episode concludes with Kate and Larry successfully bringing the outlaws to justice, honoring Uncle Jack's memory, and solidifying their partnership in maintaining law and order in the Wild West.
