Narrator
With his faithful Indian companion, Tonto, the masked rider of the plains led the fight for law and order in the early days of the western United States. Outlaws and confidence men, road agents and rustlers, learned to fear his strength and courage. Nowhere in the pages of history can one find a greater champion of justice. It was he, more than any other man, who blazed the trail for progress and finally made possible the winning of the West. Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. From out of the past come the thundering hoop beats of the great horse.
Brady
Silver.
Narrator
The Lone Ranger rides again.
The Lone Ranger
Come on, Silver. We're heading for Bordertown. There's going to be trouble I owe to.
Narrator
In the rude frontier cabin, the men and women of Bordertown crowded around the bunk, staring down at Ben Sherman's wasted body. There were tears in the women's eyes and in the eyes of Dart Sherman's son. The rest of the men stood silently. Ben Sherman was dying.
Ben Sherman
You lay back, Ben. Rest yourself. Oh, no use resting up. I got a heap of rest coming to me. Coming mighty soon. I'm going to the happy hunting grounds.
Tonto
Don't say that, Sherman.
Ben Sherman
Oh, it's true, masked man. No sense covering up the truth. When it comes time for you to cash in your chips, the old man with the scythe can follow your trail to kingdom come. Kingdom come? Reckon that's where I'll end up.
Dart Sherman
Par, don't.
Ben Sherman
Ah, now, son. Man's got to go sometime. Mast man. I'm mighty grateful to you and the Injun for finding me up in the mountains and bringing me home. I reckon home's the right place for a man to die. Oh, don't fret, son. When your time comes, you don't mind one bit. My number's up, ain't it?
Tato
Injun hunter will do all him can.
Tonto
Sure, sure.
Ben Sherman
Garth, before I go, I want to tell you. Come here. Come close to me.
The Lone Ranger
Here.
Dart Sherman
I'm here.
Ben Sherman
Pach, you recollect all them times I told you about Paradise Valley? Paradise Valley? It's set in the mountains where I come from. Grass that's greener than a pond with moss at the bottom, shady trees. And water, plenty of water all around. Clear, cold water that sets your teeth aching. It's so cold, but you just keep on drinking it. Cause it's so good. There's hunting and fishing, shade trees all around. Plenty of room for everybody. And the ground good, rich, black dirt to grow. Anything, son.
Dart Sherman
Darth, you really saw it?
Ben Sherman
You got to go there, Darth. Paradise Valley. You got to find it. Promise me you'll go there, to Paradise Valley. Promise?
Dart Sherman
I promise.
Ben Sherman
Good.
Tonto
Good.
Ben Sherman
I wonder if Kingdom come is one half as pretty as Paradise Valley. I wonder.
Tonto
Well, we'll go this way, Kimosabe.
Tato
This not trail to Amarillo.
Tonto
We're not going to Amarillo.
Tato
This trail to border town. We go there.
Ben Sherman
Huh?
Tonto
We're skirting the town, Tato. We're going to stay here a while.
Tato
You think maybe they're coming?
Narrator
Trouble?
Tonto
You heard that old man. His talk about Paradise Valley, you know, the mountains. Is there such a place?
Tato
Maybe so, Tanto. Never see it, but maybe so. Old man. Him talk plenty much. Sound like him see with own eyes.
Tonto
Yes, Tanto, that's just it.
Tato
Kimasabi.
Tonto
What, you mean there's no Paradise Valley? Kimosabe, no.
Tato
But old man, everyone who was at
Tonto
his bedside listened to every word he spoke. Did you notice his son, Dart?
Tato
That right him listen close.
Tonto
They all did, Kimosabe. Paradise Valley is going to make a lot of trouble for them all. It may not happen for a month or so. Wait and see. It's going to come sooner or later. Here.
Brady
Another drink, Starmer? Not today, Freddie. Let's amble, huh?
Dart Sherman
We just got a drink and come on.
Tato
All right, then.
Brady
Reckon you got something on your mind, Starmer. So fire touchy.
Tonto
Maybe so.
Brady
Wait till we get out near the hitching post.
Tonto
All right, now.
Brady
Too many gents inside there. Too many of them got long ears.
Tonto
I had this on my mind ever
Brady
since old man Sherman died, Brady. What's that?
Dart Sherman
What did you say?
Brady
You heard me since old Ben Sherman died.
Dart Sherman
Why, Starmie, you mean.
Brady
Yeah, Brady, I mean Paradise Valley.
Dart Sherman
So that's why I've been keeping an eye on Dodge Sherman. You figure if anybody knows about it, he would, huh?
Tonto
Right.
Dart Sherman
But it's been nigh until a month and he ain't left. Border town yonder he comes.
Tonto
Howdy, Dart.
The Lone Ranger
Huh?
Dart Sherman
Oh, howdy, Summer. Brady, if you don't mind, will you stand to one side? This here's my horse. This inching post is for anybody, Dart.
Tonto
Well, sure, dod sure.
Brady
Don't get riled, boy. We just wanted to ask you a question. Get out of my way. When are you going to Paradise Valley, if there is such a place?
Dart Sherman
I don't like that kind of talking, D. I don't mind what you say about me, but don't go poking fun
Starmer
at my pa's memory.
Brady
Yeah, I reckon the sooner we forget about that crazy story, the better.
Dart Sherman
It weren't no story. Pa said he saw Paradise Valley, then he saw it.
Brady
You hear that, Brady?
Starmer
Stop that laughing.
Brady
Such a place as Paradise Valley. Why don't you go there?
The Lone Ranger
Sure.
Dart Sherman
Grass as green as pond moss.
Starmer
Water go cold and hunt your teeth.
Brady
I wish I could get some of that water Dart. Where's it at?
Starmer
Stop laughing.
The Lone Ranger
What a yarn.
Starmer
Paradise Valley. Stop laughing or I'll put daylight through you.
The Lone Ranger
Stop it or shoot.
Starmer
You can't think of those guns, Sherman.
Brady
Masked man, put those guns back in
Tonto
your holsters and get on your horse and travel.
Starmer
They were talking About Paul.
The Lone Ranger
How about you?
Tonto
Ride with you? Come on.
Tato
You probably think you're plenty smart, huh? Maybe you too smart.
The Lone Ranger
All right, Tunnel, we're ready to ride.
Starmer
If them two understand any more about Paradise Valley, I'll give em.
Tato
We go now.
The Lone Ranger
Get him up, Scout. Come on, Silver.
Dart Sherman
What did that red skin mean, Starmer? He said maybe we was too smart.
Brady
I don't like it, Brady. That Lone Ranger, he's got too much brains. I sure hope he ain't figured out my scheme.
Dart Sherman
Scheme? You got a scheme, you dumb maverick.
Brady
What do you think I was egging young Sherman on for? Sure, I got a scheme, and it's going to work. Savvy? It's going to work in spite of the Lone Ranger.
The Lone Ranger
I don't know where. Art.
Tonto
Tell me something. Do you believe in Paradise Valley? Well, I. Paradise Valley is a mirage, son.
Starmer
There ain't no mirages in the mountains, mister.
Tonto
I mean, in your father's mind, he wasn't lying because he saw that valley. But he saw it only in his mind. Remember that.
Dart Sherman
But he sounded so convincing.
Tonto
Dreams can become more real than actual life, Dart. Yeah.
Starmer
Only when I think about how Paul
Dart Sherman
looked when he was telling us that last time.
Starmer
Then I believe all about it.
Tonto
And the sooner you stop, the better.
Dart Sherman
Oh, he even said he'd leave a map. I've been looking for that map.
Tonto
Now forget about it.
Dart Sherman
Yeah, I reckon you're right, masked man.
Starmer
Reckon I better forget about it.
Tato
I'm that good fine, Dart.
Tonto
Now you're talking sense, El.
The Lone Ranger
Our trails part here. Adios.
Ben Sherman
Yep.
Starmer
I head this way for the house. And thanks, masked man.
Brady
Get up, boss.
The Lone Ranger
Adios. Adios, Dart.
Tato
I'm all right now, Kimasabi.
Tonto
I wish I could be as sure as you are, Toto.
Dart Sherman
Huh?
Tato
But boy, him promise.
Tonto
I hope he keeps that promise, Tonto. I hope he keeps it, but I'm not so sure.
Dart Sherman
That's right, horse.
Tonto
Get along into the corral.
Dart Sherman
I got the bar across, so you can't mosey out of there. I'll head into the shack and rustle up some grub for myself. Sure is kind of empty around here since Pa died. Just me all alone. Maybe that's what makes me feel like wandering off sometimes. Like looking for this here Paradise Valley. There's Pa's gun and belt. I ain't touched it since he died. Still got the dirt on the gun butt from where he fell on the mountain. Hey, what's this piece of paper stuck way down the bottom of the holster? Yep, it's paper, all right. I wonder why Paul was hiding it. Let me see what it's all about. Looks like some kind of a map. Looks like. Well, I'll be doggone.
Starmer
Paul was right.
Dart Sherman
He was right all the time.
Starmer
That's just what it is. A real honest to goodness map. I better get moving fast. I tell you, Diana, I. On the map. Right in paw's holster. He must have hit it there just before he got hurt.
Doc
Doc, you gotta listen.
Starmer
I came right over here to tell you about it. Diana. I'm gone.
Doc
You can't dart. You can't.
Starmer
Will you wait for me, daughter?
Doc
I don't want you to go.
Starmer
There ain't no time for talk. The sooner I start, the sooner I find what I'm looking for.
Doc
You'll never find it.
Brady
That's what I thought.
Starmer
But now I got a map.
Doc
A map? That's as foolish as all your father's talk. How do you know the map is any good?
Ben Sherman
Of course it is.
Dart Sherman
It's gotta be.
Ben Sherman
Give me a horse.
Starmer
I'll be back, Diana. And you and all the rest of the folks will learn.
Brady
Paul was right.
Doc
Wait.
Starmer
I've been waiting too long already. Get up.
Doc
I got to get to town. I gotta find the Lone Ranger. Does anyone tell where to find the Mast Pen? I better find him.
Brady
Brady.
Tonto
Let's amble.
Dart Sherman
Yeah, we heard him.
Doc
Plenty don't list. He saddled his horse and headed west. Where's the baby?
Brady
Come on now, Brady. Step along. Ain't nobody to see us running. Beyonders are horses. Stand still, you mangy coyote. Let me slip this rope. Doggone it. Come on.
Narrator
Come on.
Brady
What are you waiting for? The ranger caught in the hitching radar. There we are.
Dart Sherman
Hey, you.
Starmer
Snap the reins.
Brady
We're in a hurry. Get on your horse.
The Lone Ranger
Come on, move. Tom. Sonia.
Starmer
Are we in that big a hurry that you had a break this year? Rainstormer.
Brady
Got fresh reins back at our place, Brady. And fresh horses.
Starmer
We're going after Dodge.
Brady
You heard her talking inside there, didn't you? Dart said it.
Starmer
Where she said. But we seen him earlier. He didn't have a single intention of traveling out of town.
Brady
That's just what bothered me. Brady. What made him change his mind so fast? We're going after him to find out, Savvy?
The Lone Ranger
Heading west. Heading west.
Brady
Right on his trail. And the faster we move, the better. That girl is going to locate the mask man pretty soon. I want to take care of Doc before the mask man starts after Savvy. Whip up your horse, Brady.
Starmer
Get up there.
The Lone Ranger
Get up. Gravel Dog, on your.
Doc
Engine. You said you take me to the Lone Ranger. We're heading way out of town. Where is he?
The Lone Ranger
There. Campfire up ahead. You see it?
Tato
That mask man.
Doc
Hurry. I've got the Talon engine.
The Lone Ranger
Me tell him. Harley. Hi, King Bobby.
Doc
What's the matter, mask man? Mask man. Thank heaven I found you. You got to find Dart.
The Lone Ranger
Dart.
Tonto
We saw him not three hours ago. He was heading home.
Doc
Not now, mister. Now he's heading west. He found a map in his father's holster. A map of Paradise Valley.
Tato
What map? Behind us.
Doc
You got to bring him back before he runs into trouble. Like his father did.
Tonto
Tano, is Scout fresh ready for the trail?
The Lone Ranger
Him ready.
Tonto
Then we start right now. Kimozabe. Steady. Silver, you said he was heading west.
Doc
That way. Miss. He's been going a long while.
The Lone Ranger
Don't worry.
Tonto
There may be trouble ahead, but Tunnel
The Lone Ranger
and I'll do our best on the trail.
Starmer
Silver.
The Lone Ranger
Scout.
Narrator
The curtain falls on the first act of our Lone Ranger story. Before the next exciting scenes, please permit
Tonto
us to pause for just a few moments.

The Lone Ranger
Sam.
Narrator
Now to continue our story. Heading west from border town into the gathering shadows. Heading west toward the mountains. First there was young Dart Sherman, galloping his horse along the narrow trails.
Starmer
Get along, horse. We're heading for the mountains. We're heading for Paradise Valley. Get traveling.
Narrator
And behind them, on the same trail, leaning forward, Nurse saddles came Stormer and Brady.
Tonto
The bad man.
Brady
Keep driving as long as there's light. We can see his trail playing.
Starmer
It's getting darker every minute.
Brady
Them tracks are French. We're not far from him. We stay this close. When it comes dark, we'll see his campfire. That's when we get him for sure.
The Lone Ranger
Get up there.
Narrator
And last of all, far back of the others, because they started so much later, came the Lone Ranger in Tonto, the great horse. Silver needed no urging to cover the ground at lightning speed. And beside him, like a shadow, raced the paint house Scout, galloping toward the west.
The Lone Ranger
It'd get darker. Kimasabi. They're still far ahead of us, Totto. Not one horse. Three horse. Yes. You know what that means. Timer and Brady. Timer and Brady it is. They must be after young Sherman plenty bad. They must be going after that map. The map of Paradise Valley. I don't care about the map. It's what they might do to Dart that I'm concerned about. Farmer isn't choosy about his methods. Do not worry. We not lose trail. Look up at the sky, Kimosabe. We follow trail in dark. We find them, we may lose a trail. Look up at the sky. Those clouds. It looks like rain. Oh, that's right. How to not notice. How to watch ground for tracks. If it rains, we may lose the trail completely. We've got to beat the storm faster, Silver.
Doc
Get him up.
The Lone Ranger
Scout. Come on, Sil.
Dart Sherman
What's so all fired comical, Styler?
Brady
It's rain soaking me through and through. What are we waiting for?
Dart Sherman
Down to the giant campfire. Let's get there.
Tonto
I like this rain, Brady.
Dart Sherman
You local?
Brady
I like it. It's a good heavy rain. That means it'll wash out the horse's tracks. Heavy?
Dart Sherman
Oh, you mean the mask.
Brady
Tom Brady.
Dart Sherman
Yeah.
Brady
They say him and that engine can trail a bird that flies. But I don't calculate. They'll have an easy time coming after us.
Dart Sherman
Yeah, didn't think of that. Now all we got to do is.
Brady
All we got to do is get Doc y.
Dart Sherman
Sneak right up behind them.
Brady
Get your gun handy.
Dart Sherman
I got it.
Brady
Come on. You won't even know we're coming.
Dart Sherman
Yeah, yeah. This Is it all right? This map shows it for real. It's less than two days ride from here. Paradise Valley. Get away, horse. Stop sticking your head under this tarpaulin. Little rain won't hurt you.
Starmer
Let me read this map.
Dart Sherman
Yeah, yeah. Less than three days ride from town. That's all it is.
Starmer
What in thunder?
Brady
Howdy, Dodge.
Ben Sherman
Starmer, Stormer and Brady.
Starmer
Where'd you Omris come from?
Narrator
Same place you did.
Brady
Border town.
Dart Sherman
You left in an all fired hurry, Dot. Where you hidden?
Starmer
None of your business.
Brady
Going into the mountains, huh?
Starmer
Get out of here. This here's my camp.
Tonto
What's that you're holding?
Brady
Get away. Get away or I'll keep your hands off them guns. Ready that paper.
Tonto
Get me.
Brady
Keep your gun on the little coyote, Starmer. I'll decipher this here paper very much like that.
Tonto
Fire.
Dart Sherman
That is enough.
Brady
Now let's see if. Starmer.
Dart Sherman
Starmers.
Starmer
What we figured?
Narrator
A map.
Starmer
A map for Paradise Valley. Look, it shows it plain. We could get there blindfolded. Give me that man.
The Lone Ranger
Grab him.
Starmer
Get him.
Brady
He's trying to get away.
Starmer
Don't shoot him.
The Lone Ranger
Strummer.
Starmer
Get his legs.
The Lone Ranger
Drag him off that horse.
Brady
Cut him off. That horse almost got away. Didn't you knock me to one side and jump your horse while we was
Starmer
looking at the map. What are you gonna do?
Brady
We could shoot you right now.
The Lone Ranger
No, you wouldn't.
Brady
But we ain't. I see your horse has a rope just slip around your feet and hands.
Starmer
So you can't. You can't go to Paradise Valley. You can't stop here.
Brady
Jabarin, we got the map and that's
Starmer
right where we're going.
Brady
Yeah, we'll stake it out for ourselves too. Once we look it over, we get the whole valley from the government.
Dart Sherman
Won't cost us a cent.
Brady
It's the swell of places your PA spotted it was me.
Starmer
And Starmer can get plenty rich off you dirty, thieving sidewinders, you.
Brady
We ain't killing you now, Doug. Too close to border town. Savvy? Maybe that masked man might find you. Maybe someone might hear the shooting. We're taking you with us up into the mountains. Yeah, and when we get to this here Paradise Valley. Well, we'll get rid of you then, huh, Brady? Yeah.
Dart Sherman
We'll let him look at Paradise Valley
Starmer
for the first time and the last time.
Brady
Get our horses, Brady. We're traveling on as soon as this rain lets up. And if anybody's after us, our trail's washed out cold by this time. We got nothing to worry about.
The Lone Ranger
Sun Come up now. Kimasabi. No sign of Dart.
Starmer
Sherman.
The Lone Ranger
Toto. And what we do? The first thing we have to do is locate where Dart made camp last night. He must have built a fire someplace. That's right. But where? Swing south, Kimosabe. I'll head north away. We'll range back and forth. One of us is bound to hit it. We go this way. Get him up. Scout, fire two shots if you find it. Come on, Silver. We're heading north. Not a sign, Silver. We've covered miles. It's almost noon. Not a sign. But we'll keep looking. Traveling all day, Silver. All day in the shadow of the mountains.
Tonto
Dark Must have camped someplace. He must have.
Ben Sherman
What's that?
The Lone Ranger
Silver? What's that? A campfire.
Tonto
A burnout.
The Lone Ranger
Campfire.
Tonto
We found it, Silver.
The Lone Ranger
Now the signal, Tato. We've found Dart.
Tonto
Sherman's night camp.
The Lone Ranger
Me here.
Tato
Signal me come fast.
Tonto
This is Kimosabe. This burned out campfire. It's from last night. And the wood is still damp.
Tato
Ah, and here. Footprints made after rain this morning. Three men.
Tonto
Dart wasn't alone, Tato. Starmer and Brady found him. And they took him along unwillingly too.
Tato
How you tell that?
Tonto
I noticed the footprints, Kimosabe. Two men dragged the third along and they lifted him into his saddle.
Dart Sherman
That's right.
Tato
Then horse go off that way?
Tonto
Yes.
Narrator
They're far ahead of us.
Tonto
Tunnel.
Tato
Ah, and look how Sam filled hoof prints already. They leave early this morning. They're plenty far off.
Dart Sherman
Hello.
Tonto
I'm afraid they found the map that Bart had. The map of Paradise Valley.
Tato
Not heap bad.
Tonto
It'll be slow work trailing them with the sundown. If we only had some idea where they were heading. If we knew we could head straight for it without watching for the trail. We could then tunnel right beside you. That large flat rock. Huh?
Brady
Me see it.
Tonto
Look. It's been moved from its former resting place. You see where it slid before it was lifted?
Tato
Tanto not notice that. What it mean one side.
Tonto
Tano, let me have that.
Tato
You lift rock away. What boy you do? Tana?
Dart Sherman
Look.
Tato
Somebody make drown in sand under rock.
Tonto
That's it, Kimosabe. Dart did that. He must have drawn that map from memory. Then he moved the rock to cover it.
Tato
Ah, him plenty smart, hombre.
Tonto
Study it, Kimosabe. We'll learn that map as fast as we can.
Tato
Map on paper from saddlebag.
Tonto
It's a map of Paradise Valley. As soon as we have it copied, we'll head straight for it. Let's hope we get there in time.
Dart Sherman
Brady.
Brady
Brady, stop hold on.
The Lone Ranger
Huh?
Brady
You got that map in your hand. Does it say something about a pass in the rock shaped like the letter V?
Dart Sherman
Yeah. It says that's the entrance to Paradise Valley.
Brady
And look up yonder, right smack ahead of us.
Dart Sherman
Well, I'll be doggone. I had my face buried in this map.
Starmer
I didn't see it.
Dart Sherman
That's it.
Starmer
That's it.
Brady
Ain't it, Dodge?
Dart Sherman
I reckon so. Stomma, you don't know how to act
Brady
about it, do you? Don't know whether to be glad because your pa's map was right or sorry because we're going to finish you off.
Starmer
You can do as you like.
Dart Sherman
I can't stop you.
Brady
Nobody can stop us.
Tonto
Not now.
Brady
As soon as we get over that pass, we'll look at what lies beyond.
Dart Sherman
We'll see the valley. Starmer, I tell you, I still feel there's something wrong. Huh? There's something about these mountains I don't like. Savvy? Ah, they give me the shivers. Like they was watching us all the time.
Brady
There ain't nobody watching, Brady. The mountains are nobody.
Dart Sherman
Savvy?
Tato
We're all alone up here.
The Lone Ranger
What is a shot?
Brady
Where in tarnishing that come from?
Starmer
Get down it's tunnel.
Ben Sherman
It's the Engine.
Brady
Brady. Throw bullets toward that redskin better van Moose.
Starmer
Engine. We'll fill you full of lead.
The Lone Ranger
You set, Boy free.
Starmer
Stormer, he ain't aiming at us.
Brady
Sure. He's afraid he'll hit Dark. Besides the engines alone, I don't see the mask, man. Head up the slope, Starmer.
Starmer
We'll get beyond the pass.
Brady
Gino, come on. I'll drag Dark's horse behind us. He'll be right in line of fire so the redskin won't dare shoot. Get up there.
Starmer
Get up there.
Brady
Never mind slinging that Brady up over the rock.
Doc
Engine. Engine, help.
Brady
You ain't got a chance, Doc. Once we get beyond that path, we can hold off an army. If the Engine tries to rescue you, he'll end up eating dust the same way you're going at. Here we are. Rein up your horse, Brady. Right down beside these rocks. If that engine comes a step closer, we can pick him off like a jaybird on a fence. We'll get the masked man too, if he ever shows up.
The Lone Ranger
Then try it, Starmer. I'm right behind you.
Ben Sherman
It's the masked man.
The Lone Ranger
Drop those guns.
Brady
Shoot, Brady.
Doc
Shoot him down.
The Lone Ranger
Now don't move, either of you.
Starmer
Man, you shot the guns right out of their hands.
Tonto
Starmer, Brady, get on your horse.
Starmer
You got up Here. Ahead of us. Mister, I knew you'd find that map I drew in the sand.
The Lone Ranger
They knew it.
Tonto
We found it.
Tato
Dark. You get that man.
The Lone Ranger
Kimasabi.
Tonto
Our plan worked perfectly. Tanto, see that those two set their horses quietly until we go.
Tato
Let them not move. Tanto, watch him.
Tonto
We're heading back for border town. All of us. But before we go, there's just one thing more. Dart, you were looking for Paradise Valley, weren't you?
Dart Sherman
My gosh, Masked man.
Tonto
I plum forgot that map your father drew. It placed Paradise Valley right here. Turn around. All of you turn around and take a look.
Ben Sherman
Well, I'll be branded for a maverick.
Brady
Paradise Valley. But Brady, that ain't nothing but more rocks. More rocks. And no trees at all.
Tato
Master.
Dart Sherman
Master. Where's the green grass and the shade trees?
Ben Sherman
The water?
Dart Sherman
Where's the cool spring water Paul was talking about?
Tonto
It never was here. Dart, your father imagined the whole thing, including the map.
Tato
My.
Dart Sherman
You mean there ain't no such place?
Tonto
Remember what I told you before, Dart. You have to work for happiness. Forget about Paradise Valley. Get back to Bordertown and build your own happiness.
Tato
Me? Take ropes off.
Dart Sherman
Build your own happiness? Yeah, mister, I sure will. And from this day on, when the Lone Ranger tells me something, I believe it.
The Lone Ranger
Go get him up.
Doc
Scout.
The Lone Ranger
Hi.

This episode of Old Time Radio Westerns presents a restored classic Lone Ranger adventure, "Valley in the Hills." The story revolves around the myth of "Paradise Valley"—a promised land described by a dying man, Ben Sherman, which catalyzes a race among several Westerners to find it. At the heart of the episode are timeless Western themes: the conflict between hope and reality, the lure of easy fortune, the danger of greed, and the moral guidance of The Lone Ranger.
[04:48–08:06]
Notable Quotes:
"Man's got to go sometime... I'm mighty grateful to you and the Injun for finding me up in the mountains and bringing me home. I reckon home's the right place for a man to die." — Ben Sherman (06:06)
[08:44–11:02]
Quote:
"Paradise Valley is a mirage, son... In your father's mind, he wasn't lying because he saw that valley. But he saw it only in his mind." — Lone Ranger (11:19)

[24:50–28:47]
Memorable Moment:
"Drop those guns!... Don't move, either of you." — The Lone Ranger, expertly ending the standoff ([28:42–28:47])
[29:12–30:02]
Quote:
"You have to work for happiness. Forget about Paradise Valley. Get back to Bordertown and build your own happiness." — The Lone Ranger (29:50)
The episode is classic Lone Ranger—straightforward, moralistic, and adventure-driven, with a sense of nostalgia and earnestness. The dialogue is plain-spoken and evocative of the Old West, with clear good-versus-evil dynamics and an undercurrent of hope and human frailty.
"Valley in the Hills" is a tale about chasing dreams—and the realization that some are just that: dreams. Dart Sherman’s quest to honor his father's dying wish takes him into danger, manipulated by greedy townsfolk. The Lone Ranger and Tonto, through moral clarity and skill, rescue Dart and expose the truth: the real "Paradise Valley" is not a place, but the happiness one builds by working hard and fostering community. The story is a quintessential Western parable, blending suspense, pathos, and a wholesome lesson, all delivered in restored radio drama splendor.
