Jingles
Kellogg's, the greatest name in cereals, presents Wild Bill Hicker. Hi. You folks hold on to your hats and pass that Kellogg's Raisin brand. Cause here comes Guy Madison as Wild Bill Hickok and his pal Jingles. Which is me, Andy Devine. We got another Rootin Tootin Wild Bill Hickok adventure story for you from Kellogg's Raisin Bran. The cereal with the fruit already on it. Oh, boy. Raisin and toasted bran flakes. Kellogg's Raisin Bran.
Narrator
Today, Kellogg's Raisin Bran, the cereal that comes out of the box with the fruit already on it, brings you Wild Bill Hickok, transcribed in Hollywood and starring Guy Madison as Wild Bill and Andy Devine as his pal jingles. In just 30 seconds, you'll hear the exciting story. Guess what? I just opened a box of Kellogg's Raisin Bran. And you know what I see? Big golden flakes of bran and lots and lots of raisins. Oh, boy, these are some raisins. Big, plump and tender, all honeycomb coated to keep them right and ready to eat, too. It's a great combination, this Kellogg's Raisin Bran. Ask your mom to serve you this breakfast treat real soon. Kellogg's Raisin Bran, the cereal with the fruit already on it. United States Marshal Wild Bill Hickok was famous as a crack shop and a superb horseman, as well as a man feared by outlaws throughout the West. His big deputy, Jingles, was almost as well known for his talents. But the two lawmen needed all their skill and some luck, too, to escape disaster on Wild Horse Mesa.
Jingles
We're gaining on him, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Red, loop in your rope. Jingles. He's not going to give up without a fight.
Jingles
He's one of the prettiest wild horses I ever saw in my life.
Wild Bill Hickok
I got Jingle.
Jingles
Whoa.
Wild Bill Hickok
Woo.
Jingles
We Bill, that big black jumped right off the edge of that cliff.
Wild Bill Hickok
He sure did. Let's see what happened to him.
Jingles
Well, if we hadn't hauled in our horses, we'd have gone over the edge, too.
Wild Bill Hickok
Funny thing, I didn't even see the edge of that clip till the horse jumped over it.
Jingles
Lucky thing you saw it in time to yell. Hey, hey, look. There's a river down there in the bottom.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sure is. Look what's climbing out the bank on the Other side.
Jingles
Well, it's the big black billy landed in the water and didn't get killed.
Wild Bill Hickok
I'm sure glad of that.
Jingles
Well, shall we look for a way to get across and start trailing him?
Wild Bill Hickok
Ah, let him go. He's earned his freedom.
Jingles
Yeah, I know just how you feel, Bill. Besides, he saved our lives. Well, we'll catch some other wild horses for Charlie Jones.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, there's plenty of them running loose up here on the mesa.
Jingles
Well, if it's all the same to you, Bill, I'd just as soon find a place to camp and go back to wild horse hunting in the morning.
Wild Bill Hickok
That's fine with me. This is sort of a vacation. I'm no hurry at all, Daddy. Buck. John.
Jingles
Take it easy, Joker. There. Well, let's ride, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wait a minute, Jingles. Here comes a rider. And he's really kicking up a whirlwind.
Jingles
Hey, he is stirring up a breeze, ain't he? What's a rider doing way out here in the wilderness?
Wild Bill Hickok
Maybe he's hunting wild horses, too.
Jingles
Well, he's gonna need another horse the way he's lathering that one.
Blackie
Well, I thought I'd never catch up to you two.
Jingles
I don't think we're so hard to catch. What do you want us for?
Blackie
I don't want you. Blackie said to give you this.
Wild Bill Hickok
What is it? A note.
Blackie
He said you'd know what to do about it.
Jingles
That's funny. Especially when we don't know anything.
Blackie
He said for me not to wait for an answer.
Jingles
Oh.
Blackie
He wants me to find the two boys that are supposed to knock out the bridge and head them off before they run into the trap.
Jingles
Trap? Now, what trap?
Blackie
Well, Clancy heard about it. Somehow he's heading for the bridge with a posse. You better get moving like I said to hurry up for.
Jingles
Go.
Wild Bill Hickok
Go.
Jingles
Hey, now, wait a minute, Bill. What's this all about?
Wild Bill Hickok
I don't know, partner.
Jingles
Who's Blackie, who's Clancy, and what bridge are they heading for?
Wild Bill Hickok
Clancy? Jingles, it seems to me that the sheriff of this cop is named Clancy.
Jingles
Well, that could be this Jasper said something about him heading for the bridge with a posse.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, I see what's in this note.
Jingles
Well, what's it say, Bill? Huh? What's it say? Oh, whole still. Joker. You'll lose me one of these days when I ain't expecting you to jump. Now, Bill Hickok, tell me what that says before I pop.
Wild Bill Hickok
It says, forget the bridge and stop the stage here. And there's a map of a road and A group of five trees right at a turn stop the stage.
Jingles
What are they going to do to it?
Wild Bill Hickok
Probably hold it up.
Jingles
Yeah, I reckon so. What else does it say, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
It says Barton Ted will get there in time to help you. Hurry. And watch out for Clancy Sign, Blackie.
Jingles
Well, that don't make any sense. To who does this Blackie think we are, a couple of stick up men?
Wild Bill Hickok
Blackie doesn't, but the writer that gave us his map think we are.
Jingles
Well, wait till I see him again. I'll tell him.
Wild Bill Hickok
I'll tell you what, Jingles. Why don't we just pretend that we're a couple of stage robbers and we'll see what this is all about, huh? Oh, but Bill, like he said, first a hurry. Let's go, huh?
Jingles
Mark.
Wild Bill Hickok
Sh.
Jingles
Oh. Jump, Joker. Bill's got one of those local ideas again.
Wild Bill Hickok
There's a turn in the road, Jingles.
Jingles
Yeah, there's the five trees.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now let's just hope we're here before the stagecoach. While off here, Jingles, we'll try to stop the stage when it gets here.
Jingles
I still can't figure out what this is all about.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, I can't either. Except that Jasper that gave us a map probably thought we belonged to Blackie's gang.
Jingles
But who's Blackie? And how come he doesn't know who's working for him?
Wild Bill Hickok
I don't know all the answers, Jingles. We're just going to have to wait and find out.
Jingles
Well, we won't have to wait very long. Look, here comes a stage down the road now.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, let's step out and hail him.
Jingles
I hope he don't think we're a couple of road agents. Hey, they see us now. Bill. They're shooting.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wave your arms so they can see we're not holding guns.
Jingles
I'm waving like a windmill in a high breeze. Now, now check that out. We're not holding you up.
Wild Bill Hickok
That shot came from behind us. Jingles, get down.
Jingles
Now we've done it right in the middle with guns on both sides of it.
Narrator
Today's Wild Bill Hickok story continues in just one minute. While Bill Hickok and Zingles, mistaken for members of a hold up gang, try to warn the stage coach driver but draw a hail of bullets for their trouble to make their position more dangerous. Shots also come from behind them.
Jingles
Dad. Blame it. I'm going to start shooting. Back in a minute.
Wild Bill Hickok
Don't go for a gun, Jingles. Stage is stopping.
Blackie
What in tarnation's going on here? You trying to hold up this stage.
Wild Bill Hickok
You can see we haven't any gun.
Blackie
Well, then who's doing all the shooting?
Jingles
Oh, some varmints back down the road. That's them.
Wild Bill Hickok
Now, you'd better turn that stage around, head back the way you came.
Blackie
Well, thanks for warning me, but I can't do that. I got the important shipment. Has to get through to Winter Springs. Say, who are you, anyhow?
Wild Bill Hickok
My name's Hickok.
Jingles
Wild Bill Hickok, that is. And I'm Jingles.
Blackie
Well, I'll be Dad Burns. Sure, I recognize you now.
Wild Bill Hickok
We had a hunch a holdup might be tried so we came on out to see if we could help.
Blackie
It's a funny thing. The express company heard some rumors too. They sent Sheriff Clancy out to guard a bridge about a mile down the road.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, we heard something about that too. Then the gang was supposed to come up here to this curve and stop you.
Blackie
Well, what happened to them?
Jingles
Oh, a couple of them are down the road there. But I can't figure out why they stopped shooting.
Wild Bill Hickok
Most likely figured we're part of their gang and they're holding the fire up.
Jingles
Doggone it, I'm all mixed up.
Blackie
Well, I can't hold this team much longer, Hickok. Suppose I can go ahead.
Wild Bill Hickok
Why not try it? Jingles and I'll get our horses and ride guard for you.
Blackie
Fine. This shipment has got to get through.
Wild Bill Hickok
Come on, Jingles.
Jingles
Oh, all right, Bill, if you say so. But we know there's a couple of polecats down there with guns in their hands. And I ain't at all happy about riding right into their sight. Now, hold still, jokers.
Wild Bill Hickok
That a marshawn. All right, driver, let's go.
Jingles
All right, Bill. I think maybe those varmints are right in that bunch of trees at the foot of the hill.
Wild Bill Hickok
You might be right. Let's ride on ahead.
Jingles
Right ahead. Make targets out of ourselves.
Wild Bill Hickok
It's better for us to be the targets than the stagecoach.
Jingles
Oh, get along, Joker. Well, that depends on whether I'm a stagecoach or whether I'm me. I happen to be me. And I'd rather have somebody shooting at the stage. Hey, now, that was too darn close.
Wild Bill Hickok
This time we can shoot back. Jingles, run them out of those trees.
Jingles
There they go, Bill. Let's go after them.
Wild Bill Hickok
Let them go, Jingles. You can't get too far from the stage. But, Bill, we'll find them later. Easy, D. Easy, Bu.
Jingles
Slow down, Joker. Hoo. Bill, we had a chance to catch ourselves a couple of owl hoots.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, now, Our job is to see that that stage gets to Willow Spring safely. Then we'll go look for owl hoots.
Jingles
Well, all right. But the first one I'm looking for is named Blackie. I want to know what this is. All.
Slash
Lame brain jugheads. I figured it all out for you. Sent a map and a note and still the plan went wrong.
Jingles
Sam and I were there and we saw two men stop the stage, so we held her fire.
Slash
Then what happened?
Jingles
Well, the stage started up again and these two hombres came at us pouring on the lead. Well, we figured something had gone wrong.
Slash
So we hightailed it out of there. Flash got you with my message about the bridge?
Blackie
Why, sure I did. And I gave the other note to them two riders you hired for this job.
Slash
You're sure?
Blackie
Course I am. Made em up on Wild Horse Mesa. One of them gun hands is the biggest man I ever saw.
Slash
Big? Neither one of them was big, but they're both awful fast with a six gun.
Blackie
What do you mean not big? Why, he looked as big as a horse he was riding. He and his partner was both wearing buckskins and a pair of guns apiece.
Jingles
I don't sound like the two you picked up, boss.
Slash
It sure doesn't. They were each wearing one gun and carrying a rifle. They were both short and they were wearing black shirts and blue jeans.
Blackie
Well, I didn't know that.
Slash
Slash who? Idiot, you gave that note to the wrong men. But Black Cheddar, that note had my name signed to it. What if the law gets hold of it?
Jingles
Well, what are we going to do?
Slash
Going to ride into Willow Springs and look for a couple of gents wearing buck skins?
Jingles
Yeah, maybe you can get the note back.
Slash
I'm interested in shutting up those two before they do any talking. And if I have to, I'll shut them up with.45 caliber slugs.
Jingles
Doggone it, Bill, business is business. But do you have to be so dad blame busy about it?
Wild Bill Hickok
Now, what's worrying you, partner?
Jingles
My stomach, that's what. You just rode right on by the prettiest little cafe in town. And I'm hungry.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, you can wait a little longer. I want to find out what this stage robbing business is all about.
Jingles
Well, so do I, but I'm in no tiring hurry about it.
Wild Bill Hickok
Suppose you want to quit your job and go back to Kansas.
Jingles
No, I like my job. I just like to eat a little oftener, that's all.
Wild Bill Hickok
Pull up here. Jingle. There's a hitch rack open.
Jingles
Yeah. Oh, Joker. Now you just wait right there. Joker, till we get back.
Wild Bill Hickok
I don't think we're gonna be gone very long.
Jingles
Pretty little town, ain't it, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, nice little place. Hey, let's head down this way.
Jingles
It's all right with me. Hey, maybe we'll find another cafe, huh?
Wild Bill Hickok
Look, Jingles, you can eat later.
Jingles
Later, he says. Later. Always later. Where are we going now, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Over at the sheriff's office, Jingles. He must know something about this gang of lackeys.
Jingles
Yeah, at least he heard a rumor about the hold up and headed for that bridge.
Wild Bill Hickok
Must be somebody in that gang that's letting out information, Jingles. I'd sure like to find out who it is.
Jingles
Hey, Bill, somebody's following us.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, I noticed him. Don't look around.
Jingles
I already did. There's three of them and we've met one of them before.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, who's that?
Jingles
The fella that handed us that note up on Wild Horse Mason.
Wild Bill Hickok
Well, that's real interesting. We'll turn around and surprise him.
Jingles
All right. I hope it works out the way you figured it would. No, no thanks. Look out.
Wild Bill Hickok
Howdy, gents. Well, maybe you wanted to talk to us.
Slash
Yeah, yeah, we want to talk to you. Spread out, boys.
Wild Bill Hickok
No, don't spread out. Stay together and move in a little closer.
Jingles
And don't let those hands stray down by your hol either.
Slash
I wouldn't go talking so big, mister, unless I could back it up.
Wild Bill Hickok
I might give you the same advice, stranger. What do you want to talk about?
Slash
These are the ones, aren't they, Slash?
Blackie
Yeah. Blackie.
Jingles
Hey, Bill. This here is Blackie.
Wild Bill Hickok
Seems that way.
Slash
Yeah, I'm Blackie. And I wrote a note that Slash here gave you by mistake. I want it back.
Wild Bill Hickok
I don't think you're going to get it.
Slash
I got no time to fool with you. Hand it over.
Wild Bill Hickok
I'm keeping that note and I'd like to ask you a few questions.
Jingles
Let's take it away from him, Blackie.
Slash
He's a smart one. He just go around talking about what's in the note. Let him have it, Bill.
Jingles
Well, Blackie, you're all alone now. Put that gun away.
Slash
How'd you draw so fast?
Jingles
Well, I keep telling salamanders like you that Wild Bill Hickok can outdraw anybody. Hickok? That's right. Jingle, that's me. And I ain't so slow either. Now put that gun away and we'll help you get those two shot up gun slicks of yours over to the doctor.
Slash
I can take care of them alone. I got Men all over this town. Hey, Sam, let him have it.
Wild Bill Hickok
On the roof across the street. Jingles.
Jingles
Hey, Bill, Blackie's running down the alley. Dog. Garnet. I missed him.
Wild Bill Hickok
Let's go, Jingles. It's getting pretty hot out here. Let's see if we can catch Black.
Jingles
Yeah, he ducked into the livery stable, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
All right, let's dig him out now.
Jingles
There's a fireman up ahead of us throwing lead our way.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, there's one behind us too, Bill.
Jingles
Were caught like a steering a brandon shoe.
Narrator
Today's Wild Bill Hickok story continues in just one minute. Wild Bill and Jingles started down the alley after Blackie. But gunfire hemmed them in from both sides. Flattened against the building, they fired back, trying to fight their way out of the trap.
Wild Bill Hickok
We can move a little farther. We can get through that door into the stable.
Jingles
J I'll try it, Bill, but every time I move, I get singed by a hot bullet. There. See what I mean?
Wild Bill Hickok
Make a run for it now.
Jingles
Now. In here.
Wild Bill Hickok
Help me close this door.
Jingles
There. That does it. I thought we were goners there for a minute.
Wild Bill Hickok
Hold it, partner.
Jingles
Somebody's closing the door on the other end.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, well, Blackie was right when he said he had men all over town.
Jingles
That was probably Blackie himself. But at least we're safe in here instead of being trapped out in that alley.
Wild Bill Hickok
That's right. Now we're trapped in a barn.
Jingles
Hey, that's right. Now what do we do, Bill, huh?
Wild Bill Hickok
Lock both doors from the inside so nobody can surprise us. Then wait for somebody to come and find out what all the shooting's been about.
Jingles
Oh, Bill, from the amount of shooting that goes on in this town, I don't think anybody's gonna bother to come and find out.
Wild Bill Hickok
We know Black and his gang are afraid of Sheriff Clancy and his posse. They're not gonna hang around here too long.
Jingles
All right, men, there's fire to that stable. Let's get out of here. Bill, did you hear that?
Wild Bill Hickok
I sure did. They're gonna set fire to the place and burn us up. Come on, Bill.
Jingles
If we go out there, we'll get shot.
Wild Bill Hickok
We stay in here, we're gonna be burned. Let's take our choice, huh?
Jingles
Oh. All right. Let's go out. That ain't the kind of a choice I enjoy making. This is your last chance, Hickok. Come out with your hands up.
Wild Bill Hickok
Don't answer him, Jingles. Follow me up that ladder. Sure. There's a big hay door up there.
Jingles
Once we get up there, we're stuck. If they light that fire, May can.
Wild Bill Hickok
Keep him from doing that. Now, over here.
Jingles
What do you say, Hickok? He's right down below us, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, I can see him from here.
Blackie
Hey, Blackie.
Slash
What's up, Slash?
Blackie
There's a whole crowd of men coming down the street and I think the sheriff's with him.
Slash
All right, we gotta clear up. Give me a match.
Jingles
I'm gonna start the fire, Bill.
Wild Bill Hickok
Maybe not.
Slash
Hey, who shot out the match?
Jingles
I did, Blackie. He's up above us. You're darn right we are. And we've got four guns pointing right at you. Now, just stand hitched with your hands way up high.
Wild Bill Hickok
That Hickok's too good a shot for me. I'm gonna do it.
Slash
What's the matter with you, buzzard? There's enough of us to get him.
Jingles
Well, they ain't gonna draw until you do, Blackie. And you've tried to draw on Bill once today, and I don't think you'll do it again.
Wild Bill Hickok
I'll have you line up against the wall of that building with your backs to me.
Jingles
Here comes the sheriff and his posse, Bill. Won't they be surprised. Hey, what's going on here?
Wild Bill Hickok
Tie up that bunch of polecat, sheriff, and we'll tell you all about it.
Jingles
What? Hey, who are you? He's Wild Bill Hickok, that's who he is. And I'm Jingles. Now, you look out for those stage robbers and barn burners till we get down out of here. Stage robbers? Who are these men?
Wild Bill Hickok
That's Blackie and his gang. Chef are the ones who tried to hold up that stage.
Jingles
Well, well, well. We've been after them for quite a spell. Which one's Blackie? Me? He's the one right over. Hey, Bill. Blackie's gone.
Wild Bill Hickok
There's only one place he could have gone. That's inside the livery stable. Come on, Jingles.
Jingles
He isn't the slipperiest glute I ever saw.
Wild Bill Hickok
Watch your step, Jingles. He's in here somewhere.
Jingles
Yeah, but where? Them corners are plenty dark and there's a lot of corners. Why couldn't we catch him in a roundhouse?
Wild Bill Hickok
Spread out a little so he can't get both of us.
Jingles
I don't even want him to get one of us.
Wild Bill Hickok
Wait a minute.
Jingles
What's the matter, Bill? What are you stopping for, huh? Did you see him? Do you? Huh?
Wild Bill Hickok
Bill, I heard something move. Right over there. All right, Blackie, come out of there with your hands up.
Jingles
You heard Bill. Now come on out. Uncover jingles.
Wild Bill Hickok
You're still in there.
Jingles
Oh, Mike. Bill, break the door down, man.
Wild Bill Hickok
The sheriff's coming in. Blackie, you better give up.
Jingles
Come and get me. Hiccup. Watch out for him, Bill. Here I come. Bly. Bill, your local. Don't. There he goes. Did you get him, Bill?
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah. Come on, partner.
Jingles
Don't you.
Slash
Don't shoot.
Jingles
You got my gun on.
Wild Bill Hickok
I won't shoot. Blaggy, you're through.
Jingles
I'll say. Well, Bill, are you all right?
Wild Bill Hickok
Yeah, I'm all right. Sheriff, here's Blackie for you.
Jingles
Yeah, that takes care of the whole gang. That's wonderful, Bill. Now if I just got enough evidence to send him to jail.
Wild Bill Hickok
Take this note along. I think it's gonna be all the evidence you're gonna need.
Jingles
Note? Yeah. You see, it was delivered to Bill by mistake. Now it's gonna send Blackie and his whole gang to the dead let.
Narrator

Episode Summary: Old Time Radio Westerns - "Wild Horse Mesa | Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok" (04-17-53)
In this captivating episode of the Old Time Radio Westerns podcast, listeners are transported to the rugged terrains of Wild Horse Mesa, where legendary U.S. Marshal Wild Bill Hickok and his trusty deputy, Jingles, embark on a high-stakes adventure that showcases their quick wits, sharp shooting, and unwavering commitment to justice in the Wild West.
The story begins with Wild Bill Hickok and Jingles in pursuit of one of the prettiest wild horses they've ever seen. Their expert horsemanship is immediately evident as they navigate the treacherous landscape. Jingles exclaims at [02:41], "He's one of the prettiest wild horses I ever saw in my life," highlighting the allure and danger of their quarry. Despite the horse's agility, Wild Bill maintains control, declaring at [02:38], "Red, loop in your rope. Jingles. He's not going to give up without a fight."
Their routine hunt takes an unexpected turn when Blackie, a rugged rider, arrives with a cryptic note intended for them. At [04:30], Blackie hands over the message, stating, "He said you'd know what to do about it." The note warns of a trap involving two boys meant to sabotage a bridge, leaving Wild Bill and Jingles puzzled about their involvement. Wild Bill deciphers the note at [05:17], "It says, forget the bridge and stop the stage here," revealing that their intervention is crucial to prevent disaster.
To uncover the truth behind Blackie's warning, Wild Bill devises a clever plan. At [06:07], he suggests, "Why don't we just pretend that we're a couple of stage robbers and we'll see what this is all about, huh?" This ruse leads them to a tense encounter with an impending stagecoach robbery. As they prepare to stop the stage, Jingles humorously remarks at [10:06], "Oh, get along, Joker. Well, that depends on whether I'm a stagecoach or whether I'm me," adding levity to the high-pressure situation.
The tension escalates when the stagecoach comes under attack, forcing Wild Bill and Jingles into a fierce gunfight. At [07:15], Wild Bill instructs Jingles, "Wave your arms so they can see we're not holding guns," attempting to de-escalate the situation. However, shots start flying from all directions, with Jingles noting at [02:50], "We Bill, that big black jumped right off the edge of that cliff," illustrating the chaotic environment they must navigate.
As the dust settles, Wild Bill and Jingles confront Blackie, who reveals the complexity of the plot at [08:22], "Well, thanks for warning me, but I can't do that. I got the important shipment. Has to get through to Winter Springs." The ensuing dialogue uncovers that Blackie mistakenly sent the note to Wild Bill and Jingles instead of his intended recipients, leading to a series of misunderstandings and confrontations.
The climax of the episode unfolds in a livery stable, where Wild Bill and Jingles find themselves trapped and under siege by Blackie's men. Amidst the chaos, Wild Bill remains composed, instructing Jingles, "Make a run for it now," at [17:08], showcasing his leadership and tactical prowess. The confrontation reaches its peak when Wild Bill captures Blackie without unnecessary violence, declaring at [21:04], "I won't shoot. Blackie, you're through."
With Blackie apprehended and his gang disbanded, Wild Bill ensures that justice is served. At [21:24], he instructs Jingles to take the misdelivered note as evidence, stating, "Take this note along.
