Chuck Wood II and I discuss how pioneers came and went in the book of Acts. Read the original article here: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/sending-and-going-in-acts Quotes:You don’t need an official church memo to go share the gospel with a neighbor or to open up a spiritual conversation with a coworker. Jesus has given you all the authority you need. You want to hear the Holy Spirit? Read the book he authored.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 18 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I discuss various dips in ministry that every pioneer needs to be prepared to work through.Quotes:“If you wait until you’re in the middle of the dip to start grabbing for relationships, it’s too late.”“Do you care whose name gets on it, or can you be okay with someone else getting their name on it?”“What is God doing in me versus through me?”“What got you to one level might not be what gets you to the next level.” “If Jesus himself had those dips to push through, why would we think we didn’t?” Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 17 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I chat about a really, really important topic in ministry: Being on the same page with your spouse.Quotes:* If we have active disagreement, we at least know where we stand. But if we have passive indifference… that can lead to a whole lot of other things that never get dealt with.”* “When you’re single, you just throw your gear in the back of the Humvee and take off. But when you’re married, it’s like getting on a C-130—you don’t just throw your stuff in; you latch it down.”* “If you’re in ministry as a family, that doesn’t mean that everybody’s going to do the same things.”* “Different is not bad. Different is actually good.”* “Live with your spouse in an understanding way—that requires listening, not just trying to vision-cast.”Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 16 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I have a great conversation about something all pioneers need. Read the original article here: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/the-importance-of-communityQuotes:It’s not the container, it’s the contents. It’s about the people and are we fellowshipping in such a way that we’re being transformed into the image of Christ? Whether that’s a big building or a living room, it can go south in both and it can be great in both.Lack of communication breeds paranoia, so just talk about it.You may need to put down something good to go spend time with lost people.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 15 This is a public episode. This might be my favorite conversation with Chuck Wood II yet. We talk about my last post, Pioneers Aren’t Busy: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/pioneers-arent-busyQuotes:The trap we can fall into when we're in ministry and when we're pioneering is assuming that whatever we're doing is what we should be doing.Am I too busy to meet with Jesus? If you're not meeting with Jesus each day, you know, it's going to end poorly because He is the vine. We are the branches. We get our power, our sustenance, our motivation, our encouragement from him. So if we're too busy to be attached to the vine, we're too busy.I would say what we're involved in when it comes to the work of making disciples is people work. And people work requires that you got to be with people... Spreadsheets don't push back and get pneumonia and are late for school and they don't take Scripture out of context.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 14 This is a public episode. Based on my last post, Lament to Fight Discouragement (https://pheaney.substack.com/p/lament-to-fight-discouragement), Chuck Wood II and I talk about the importance of having honest conversations with God when you are discouraged.Quotes:While it's awesome to launch someone, there's also some grief that comes with that. Those have to go hand in hand. They're actually going to be right there at the same time. So we want to be aware of it, and ready for it.She didn't say, “God, you're not fair.” She said, “God, I know you're fair, but right now it doesn't feel like it.” So that's the difference. The first one is you're shaking your fist at God. The second one is going: “I'm going to trust what the word says about you, but I'm also not feeling it, Lord.” So you're just bringing that raw emotion to him.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 13 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I talk about the dangers of being a reductionist in ministry. Read the article we discussed here: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/beware-reductionismQuotes:The trap we can fall into is being too reductionistic with ministry and how we go about it, thinking if I just follow a few easy steps: Boom, we're going to turn out a movement. Or if I do A, B, and C, then I'm going to have a new healthy disciple. We need to just be aware that that's not really how life works, not even how the kingdom works, if we read the Gospels and we read Acts.If you're struggling with the messiness and long-term timeline that this takes, go and look into the mirror and ask the question, how is God so patient with me? And when you come to that answer, then you will extend that same patience, that same endurance and persistence in your disciple-making ministry as well.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 12 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I talk about what happens if we hold on to our familiar tools too tightly. This is a conversation about my blog post: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/learn-to-drop-your-familiar-toolsQuotes:That's the one thing that Jesus came off the top ropes on the Pharisees for: You elevate your traditions above the commands of God. We don't want to get sideways with Jesus over tools, you know.Principles transcend time, culture, and geography. Tools do not. And so we, as pioneers, have to adapt our tools to the principle.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 11 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I talk about the two main traps we can fall into, thinking we’re being productive for the Kingdom.Quotes:In modern knowledge work, and it can also be true in ministry, there's a lot of things that we don't actually have an accurate, real measurement of how they might contribute to the bottom line.I think a lot of our results are measured by obedience versus outcome. Did I spend time with Jesus in the Word and prayer? Did I share the gospel? Did I practice my gift? Those kind of things, those are obedience-based versus results-based.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 10 This is a public episode. Chuck Wood II and I discuss Riding the Wave: https://pheaney.substack.com/p/riding-the-waveQuotes:I love that idea of perfectly unrushed... For being fully God and outside of time in one sense, it's awesome to see what fully God, fully man looked like just walking in time, never busy... always with things grabbing for his time, but never hurried, never rushed.A soldier is built for war, not for the hospital. And so if we're spending all our time in the hospital, we're doing great things, but we're not winning the war... I think it's in the heart of every believer that they know the fight is out there among the lost. You actually are commissioned to go make disciples of all nations. But on the other side, the same thing is true is you have no chance of fulfilling the Great Commission.Season 9: On Pioneering/How to Stick, Episode 9 This is a public episode.
