See you well hey there friends. Today we are going to chat keyword research. But when it's struggle bus time. Like what do you do when you're trying to figure out your keywords but you just can't find any good ones, right? Or maybe you find good ones and they're not the right size for your business. You don't have the domain authority or SEO street cred to rank for those keywords. What do you do when you are just stuck? Well, lucky for you, I've gotten stuck a lot of times and have figured out some ways to work through it. So I have five steps for you. Five tips rather for you to work through if you are ever stuck doing keyword research. If you just can't find the right keywords for your SEO strategy. All right, all right. Now step numero uno, okay. Is to go back to the drawing board, AKA your paper. I'm a huge proponent of actually doing air quotes keyword research on paper first. It's really more a keyword brainstorming. I get it. But still, because the fact of the matter is sometimes when we step in front of the technology, we step in front of the keyword research, we disengage the creative part of our brain for either overwhelm or because we're seeing other words and then like losing the words that we have in our brain. So what I always encourage students to do is to start their keyword brainstorming. I should say on paper instead of on tech. Because what you'll do is you'll start coming up with words. Your brilliant, God given brain will start coming up with words that you want to potentially rank for. And these words are going to be ones that you maybe would not have thought of otherwise if you started with the tech. Okay, so bust out your paper, your notebook, whatever. Like step away from technology and start brainstorming words that you think describe your business that your ideal client might be typing into Google when they're looking for the solution you provide. Now, if you are somebody that you're like, I have zero words face, then maybe bust out a thesaurus, okay, like maybe not a hard copy thesaurus. I'll let you use technology for this. But sometimes we just use different words to describe things to ourselves and within our business and people actually use. And so you just need to start thinking about other ways to say something or phrase something. And a thesaurus is a great way to do that. All right, tip number two or method number two to what in the heck to do when you can't find your keywords is to zoom out a little bit. Sometimes we are so focused on what we do that we forget the bigger picture. Now, for example, lots of my clients help people grow a business. Great. But sadly, grow a business is much less search than start a business. Right. Partly because people are more interested in the starting thing. They get tired of all of the work that it takes to actually grow a thing. Right. Hence my garden that died last year. A slow and tragic death. But sometimes in our keyword research, we get so target locked on what we do that we're like, oh, let me zoom out a little bit and figure out how I can phrase what I do within the context of what people are searching. Now, I'm not telling you to be a liar, big liar pants, right? But sometimes you just have to zoom out and see, okay, bigger picture, help somebody do this thing. Now, in my grow a biz versus start a business example, like maybe somebody that's your ideal client, they really are just starting a biz, just starting a business. But you are more like, oh, I help them grow a biz. Well, do you? That's fine if you do, but maybe that's not what you actually do. And the more clear you are on what you actually do, who you help and how you help them then the easier your keyword strategy is going to be. But sometimes just that zoom out and that, you know, 60,000 foot view of what you do will help you find the right keywords and get over your stuckness and yes, I just made that up. All right, number three, I want you to do a little bit of recon work. Now one of my favorite things about ubersuggest is allows you to can connect to your competitors domains. You just put their domain in and ubersuggest will show you what they're ranking for. Right? Btw, if you're new here, ubersuggest is my favorite keyword research tool. And what this allows you to do is not necessarily just straight up copy their keyword strategy because honestly, just because it works for them and their business does not mean that it's going to work for you. But what this allows you to see is what they are ranking for what's driving traffic to their website and kind of give you ideas on how people are searching for things. Because again, if you're stuck, I'm trying to get you over that so that you can build a great keyword strategy. So you're going to do a little bit of recon work and look at your competitors, not necessarily like same Z's competitors, like they're doing the same amount of business as you, but people who are further, further along in their business than you are. People who, you know, you aspire to be those kind of competitors. Okay, so you're going to do a little recon work and get some ideas for some keywords that people are actually searching to find people in your industry. Now number four is a question I want you to ask is are you too niche? Are you too niche? Now a lot of times people look at me funny when I say this because they're like, no, the niches are in the riches. And I'm like yes, yes Susan, they are. But when it comes to keyword research, people are not always slash, rarely ever searching for things as niche as we like to get in our ideal client avatar descriptions. Right? Like people are not searching for the best Louis Vuitton bag for a mom of three who likes a white mocha every Tuesday. Like that's not how they're searching for things. Obviously that was an exaggeration. But people are searching for solutions. Okay? So keep in mind that even if you have a very niche audience, doesn't mean that your people are searching for solutions as niche as your audience seems. Right? Like people still need food, they still need to eat food no matter what color sweater they love to wear. Right. People still need to know how to manage their money, regardless of whether they've been teaching for five years or 30 years. Okay? So don't get so bogged down in the idea of your ideal client avatar that you're too niche in your keyword research. Okay? Now, number five tip for you is, are you not niche enough? And I know this kind of flies in the face of tip number four, but again, I'm trying to help you get unstuck. I'm trying to help you find keywords that are going to work for your business. Your current domain authority, your current SEO street cred, your current audience size. And so I need you to ask, am I not niche enough? Now, while I am here cheering you on big time, I want you to go big or go home. You can always go big or go home in your keywords. Why? Well, because if you don't have the domain authority and the SEO street credit and the audience size to rank for those keywords, then you are a teeny tiny fish in a big pond and you're not going to get found and you're not going to get clients for that keyword. So you need to think, okay, am I a big enough fish to rank for this? And your domain authority is a great place to start, just kind of gauging that objectively. Now, I actually have a formula that I teach my students that kind of allows you to go beyond your domain authority, but for just basic keyword research purposes. Your domain authority is a good indicator of how big of keywords you can go for, meaning how many times a keyword is searched per month. Now, again, ubersuggest is a great tool to help you with this, but I do want you to know, like, just because your product isn't, you know, getting found right now for all of the things that you want to get found for, doesn't mean that it's forever hopeless. Okay? You can grow, you can get more traffic. You can learn to use SEO in a sustainable way, a way that makes sense for the average human brain, the busy business owner's life. You can learn, it can get better. It doesn't have to always suck, I promise. I've seen student after student and client after client get 40 and 50% more traffic within 30 days. Sometimes 200% more traffic within 30 days, and then 15,000% more traffic in a year for one client. So take heart, there is hope, and make sure that you are signed up for my free workshop. Podcast Title: Simple SEO and Marketing, Business Growth, Organic Marketing, Copywriting, Online Business, Blogging, Content Creation
Host: Faith Hanan
Release Date: March 20, 2025
In Episode 220 of Simple SEO & Marketing, Faith Hanan tackles a common yet daunting challenge faced by many entrepreneurs and online business owners: keyword research for Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The episode, titled "SEO Help!!! What Should You Do When You Can't Find Keywords That Fit!", provides actionable strategies and insights to help listeners overcome obstacles in identifying effective keywords that drive sustainable traffic and high-converting leads.
Faith begins by acknowledging the frustration many business owners experience when their keyword research stalls. Whether it's struggling to find relevant keywords or encountering terms that are too competitive to rank for, these challenges can impede an SEO strategy’s success. Drawing from her eight years of experience in SEO, copywriting, and content marketing, Faith outlines a five-step process designed to navigate and resolve these keyword dilemmas.
Faith opens the episode by contrasting the ephemeral nature of social media posts with the enduring benefits of a robust SEO strategy. She emphasizes that while platforms like Instagram offer fleeting visibility—"your Instagram post disappears in less than 24 hours" (00:03), SEO provides a lasting foundation for attracting consistent leads over time.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to keyword research—a cornerstone of successful SEO. Faith acknowledges that finding the right keywords can be challenging, especially when competing against larger domains with higher authority. She reassures listeners that with the right approach, it's possible to identify keywords that align with their business goals and audience needs.
Faith introduces a structured five-step approach to assist listeners in refining their keyword strategies:
Faith advocates for starting keyword brainstorming without digital tools. By writing down potential keywords manually, entrepreneurs can tap into their creativity without the distractions or limitations of technology. This method often uncovers terms that might be overlooked in digital brainstorming sessions.
"Sometimes when we step in front of the technology, we step in front of the keyword research, we disengage the creative part of our brain... your brilliant, God-given brain will start coming up with words that you want to potentially rank for." — Faith Hanan (06:30)
When stuck on specific keywords, Faith suggests broadening the focus to encompass wider aspects of the business. For instance, instead of fixating on "grow a business," consider "start a business," which may have higher search volumes. This broader perspective can reveal more viable keyword opportunities.
"Sometimes you just have to zoom out and see, okay, bigger picture, help somebody do this thing." — Faith Hanan (12:45)
Utilizing tools like Ubersuggest, Faith recommends analyzing competitors' domains to uncover the keywords they rank for. This reconnaissance can provide valuable insights into effective keywords and search behaviors within the industry, though she cautions against directly copying competitors' strategies.
"Look at what they're ranking for what's driving traffic to their website and give you ideas on how people are searching for things." — Faith Hanan (18:20)
While niche markets can be lucrative, Faith highlights that overly specific keywords may not attract sufficient search traffic. She encourages finding a balance where keywords are specific enough to target the ideal audience but broad enough to garner meaningful search volumes.
"Don't get so bogged down in the idea of your ideal client avatar that you're too niche in your keyword research." — Faith Hanan (24:10)
Conversely, Faith also warns against being too broad. If keywords are too general, especially for businesses with lower domain authority, it's challenging to rank high in search results. She advises entrepreneurs to assess whether their current niche focus matches their ability to compete for specific keywords.
"Am I a big enough fish to rank for this? Your domain authority is a great place to start, just kind of gauging that objectively." — Faith Hanan (30:15)
