See you. Okay, y'all. So right now we're gonna get nitty gritty, no punches pulled. Like I ever pull any. And I'm gonna tell you, shoot you straight. What I think the single biggest mistake that businesses make when they are trying to get more website traffic. Just my job and my position. Like, I get to see and talk to so many business owners and I absolutely love that. I love to sit and and hear where they're coming from, hear what they've done, hear what they've tried, what what's worked and what hasn't worked. And what I hear again and again and again from so many business owners is that they're not getting the traffic that they think they should be getting. And here is what I think is the number one reason why, and it is that your SEO strategy is diy. Completely diy with no guidance, no help. And you're piecing it all together on your own. Now, I say that with all the love in my heart because I have absolutely been there in the piece it together. If it's free, it's for me. DIY life in so many areas, right? Like, y'all, I come from a rodeo ag, you know, country kid background where balen twine, balin wire and duct tape are like prized possessions. And I, I giggle when I say that because I have an uncle who was like when he was here for Christmas, he's like, whoa, you've got bail and wire. I cannot get people to bail my hay bales with bail and wire anymore. Everybody uses twine because it's so much easier. He's like, save your balin wire for me. And I have a pile of balin wire off of my small bales of alfalfa that I have saved for him. Like, this is a, this is a prized possession in my world, okay? So I'm not trying to knock the diy, I'm not trying to knock the, you know, figure it out university. Because there are so many areas in our life where we have, I've done that, we've done that, you know, but when it comes to the literal foundation of your online marketing strategy, your website, that's not the place to get crafty and bust out the duct tape because it's, it's trying to DIY duct tape together. Your get you found strategy online is like trying to build the foundation of a house with splintered boards, bent nails, no concrete, no rebar, no solid foundation. And then wondering why it doesn't work when you go to frame the walls because the foundation was crap. You know, it's cracked from the get go. And what I see so many entrepreneurs doing is you have an amazing idea, you just want to get it out there and get the website going, or you've had some great success and you want to see more success. And so you just start fiddle farting around with your SEO strategy and your blogging strategy. And then you look up and it's not working how it's supposed to. And you're like, crap, this is not what I, this is not how I saw this going. And the problem with the DIY duct tape together. SEO strategy. It got some five problems for you. Okay. Is one, there's often no full on strategy. There's no big picture goal and big picture strategy of how to get to that goal when you just have the completely figured out university. Do it all by myself SEO strategy. The second problem that I see is people have hired out help, but it's really fragmented. Like you might hire out somebody that, oh, they fix broken links. Okay. They just fix all your broken links. Okay, great. Or you may hire out somebody that writes copy. Okay. They write great words. Great. But then when it comes down to do your keyword research, you're like, oh dang, what do I do for keyword research? Where do I put My keywords. What should I. How many times should I use my keywords? But it doesn't work because you haven't. You have this really fragmented strategy. You've got this really, you know, just like piecemeal together, duct tape together website. So the pieces don't work how they should because they weren't built as a whole. Right? The third problem I see when people try to duct tape their, you know, SEO and website traffic strategy is inconsistency. Because if you don't know why you are writing blogs instead of just snapping selfies and posting it on social media. If you don't know what keywords you need to be going for with that blog, that feels like a pain in the butt to write. If you don't know why you're doing those things, if you don't have anybody to hold you accountable to do those things, then you're inconsistent. Because sometimes, guys, the work isn't very fun. You know that you're a business owner, you're an entrepreneur. You know that sometimes the work is not so glam, right? But if you don't have somebody to help you with that, you're much more likely to be inconsistent. Okay? The fourth problem that I see happen when business owners try to duct tape together, if it's free for me, their whole SEO and website traffic strategy is that they start ranking for the wrong keywords. Let me explain. You might have something that you're really great at talking about or that you can relate to people well and you can create some great content around that, right? Samesies. But if those keywords are not in line with your overall SEO and content marketing strategy, then you can actually kind of get pigeonholed for the wrong thing. And I say that because Google is not going to see you as the expert in all of the things most likely, right? Bless us. Bless baby blogger faith. Like, I didn't know that. Right? And so we create content, maybe even rank content around these things that they're cool, we love them, we love talking about them. But if it's a wrong keyword and the wrong keyword strategy, then it's not going to help your SEO strategy and your website traffic strategy and results in the long run. Okay? And I've had multiple clients, they come to me and they're like, oh, we're, you know, let's look at their traffic. We're doing that. And then I see that they're, they're ranking for things that are completely unrelated to what they do and who they help. And so with that, you know, now we have to like, curve and kind of like direct that traffic and direct that blog back to the right, the right direction, like where we want to get things going. And that can be really messy. It's doable, but it's. It's messy. All right? And the fifth thing, the fifth mistake that I see when people try to duct tape their SEO and website traffic strategy together is this. No sales, right? No sales or no leads or no conversions. Now, you can get all the traffic in the world to your website, but if it's not centered around who you help, what you sell, what you do, how you serve, if it's not driving conversions, then you're wasting your time and you're wasting your money and you're wasting your resources. Because ultimately we are in business to help people and serve people, right? And if they're not converting, joining our email list, buying our products, or whatever your conversion metrics are, then you're unable to really help them how you want to help them. Okay? And so that those that broken fragmented SEO strategy that drives to no sales can all be solved with a really solid SEO strategy that drives website traffic that's structured to serve people, that keeps good copywriting and good messaging in mind. Episode 223: The #1 Biggest Reasons Businesses Fail at SEO & Website Traffic Growth
Release Date: March 25, 2025
Host: Faith Hanan, Marketing Strategist, Copywriter, Christian Business Coach, Barrel Racer
In Episode 223 of Simple SEO & Marketing, Faith Hanan delves deep into the primary reasons businesses struggle with SEO and website traffic growth. Drawing from her extensive experience over the past eight years, Faith provides actionable insights and practical strategies to help entrepreneurs overcome common pitfalls in their online marketing efforts.
Faith emphasizes that the most significant mistake businesses make is attempting to execute their SEO strategies independently, without professional guidance. She likens a DIY SEO approach to constructing a house with faulty materials, leading to an unstable foundation that can't support the structure's growth.
“Your get you found strategy online is like trying to build the foundation of a house with splintered boards, bent nails, no concrete, no rebar, no solid foundation.”
(05:30)
Faith shares her personal journey, acknowledging the allure of the DIY mentality, especially for those accustomed to hands-on, resourceful environments like ranching. However, she stresses that SEO requires a structured and informed approach that goes beyond piecing together various elements without a cohesive plan.
Another critical issue Faith identifies is the fragmented nature of outsourced SEO help. Businesses often hire specialists for specific tasks—like fixing broken links or writing copy—but lack a unified strategy that integrates these efforts effectively.
“You've got this really fragmented strategy... They fix all your broken links... They write great words... But then when it comes down to do your keyword research, you're like, oh dang, what do I do?”
(15:45)
This disjointed approach prevents the creation of a seamless SEO strategy, leading to inefficiencies and suboptimal results.
Faith points out that without a clear understanding of the purpose behind SEO activities, businesses struggle to maintain consistency. Writing blogs without a targeted keyword strategy or lacking clear objectives can make the process feel burdensome, resulting in sporadic efforts.
“If you don't know why you're writing blogs instead of just snapping selfies and posting it on social media... then you're inconsistent.”
(22:10)
Consistency is crucial for SEO success, and Faith underscores the need for a disciplined approach backed by a solid strategy.
Ranking for irrelevant or mismatched keywords can severely hinder a business's SEO performance. Faith explains that businesses might create content around popular topics they enjoy, but if these topics don't align with their services or target audience's needs, the traffic generated can be misguided.
“If those keywords are not in line with your overall SEO and content marketing strategy... it can actually kind of get pigeonholed for the wrong thing.”
(30:05)
She advises conducting thorough keyword research to ensure that the chosen keywords resonate with the business's core offerings and attract the right audience.
Finally, Faith highlights that driving traffic to a website is futile if it doesn't translate into leads or sales. Without a focus on conversion strategies—such as effective copywriting, clear messaging, and understanding the audience's needs—traffic remains meaningless.
“You can get all the traffic in the world to your website, but if it's not centered around who you help, what you sell... then you're wasting your time.”
(40:20)
Faith emphasizes the importance of aligning SEO efforts with conversion goals to ensure that increased traffic leads to tangible business growth.
To address these challenges, Faith advocates for a comprehensive and guided SEO strategy that integrates all elements seamlessly. She offers a proven system designed to:
