Paul Scheer
We're doing Criterion re releases of some of our episodes.
John Gabris
Our favorite.
Adam Pally
Could you get more, could you get
Paul Scheer
more self like how much more in up our own asses can we be? We are re releasing episodes of our podcast that we like the best with new. With old material that was originally edited out, put back into these episodes.
John Gabris
Here's the one with my dad.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, but for real. This is my birthday buddy. Another January 31st dude coming through. We talked to sheer for so long that the original airing of the episode was was chopped down a bunch. Not in like a negative way but. So we're going to put some of that foging meat back on the sandwich. We're going to scoop up some of the meat that fell off the cheesesteak. Jam it on these last few bites.
John Gabris
Paul S. And then your two dream
Paul Scheer
boats, Too much Adam P. And Johnny.
Adam Pally
Without further ado, I got to tell you, my dad, my dad, you know, Dr. Pallie listens to every episode and
John Gabris
he will give me feedback and, and lately like the feedback keeps going. This one was great.
Adam Pally
Much less frenetic. Okay. I'm like God it.
John Gabris
Thank you.
Paul Scheer
Hint taken. So let it ride. Paulie Shear the Juice. Wheeze in the juice.
Adam Pally
I'm going tonight. I surprise. Last night at like 11 o' clock at night I decided that my son and I are going to go to Phoenix today to go see the Sun's game and we just bought tickets and picking them up early from school and we're just going to go.
Paul Scheer
Oh, that's awesome. So your heart out is because you're taking your kid to a Phoenix. That's so rad.
John Gabris
So good. Paul Scheer is our guest today. The great Paul Scheer. He was my Level 2 improv teacher as well. He, he fell asleep during one of my classes holding a burrito and the burrito fell.
Adam Pally
He.
Paul Scheer
I was a PA on best week ever where he was also a talking head and I, when I got put on a Harold team I went into the his record and I was like Paul, I got put on Harold Knight and I could see for a moment he's like where do I know you from?
John Gabris
Yeah, yeah. Yet now like I don't think there's. I think statistically if you looked at our baseball cards of the industry, he would probably be the most recurring person I've worked with.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
I mean he's inspiring and how much he does and how many irons in the Fire. How many. How many different businesses he's. He's running in. He's the first guy I know that was on Twitch podcasting. Like, he knows what he's doing.
John Gabris
And to me, I don't know if you feel. I feel a very deep. Like, he feels like a mentor to me in a way where it's like, you know, he. He'll tell you how it is, but he's so positive, and he only wants the best for you.
Paul Scheer
He's inspiring from a distance, like, just watching what he's doing, and then he's very inspirational to even speak with.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
Yeah. I like, anytime I can catch up with him and catch a little, like, you know, vampire. His energy a little.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I like it.
Paul Scheer
And now he's also a cold plunge freak, so I want to ask him all about that.
John Gabris
Yeah, well, it's. It's. It's a really fun discussion. Are we pretending that it hasn't happened?
Adam Pally
Paul Scheer.
Paul Scheer
Are we all. Are we ready to rip over there?
John Gabris
We've been ripping.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
Paul, how you doing, man?
Adam Pally
Guys, so excited to be here.
John Gabris
Thank you so much. I like your rubber.
Adam Pally
Oh, yeah. It's raining here in la, and I actually was nervous before I came here. I was like, I should wear some good shoes because I respect both of your shooting.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
These pally picked out for me at the Nike store when he got me in. Remember, you were like, you should wait and see what they drop off. And that. That's. That was These.
John Gabris
That was. Paul, you want to. You want to hear one of the best pally dumb confidence stories?
Paul Scheer
Yeah. This is awesome.
John Gabris
I got us into the Nike campus just from showing. We just showed up. Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Dan Levy got him a trip to the Nike store. We didn't fully as a gift for his birthday. We were in Oregon shooting the Portland episode. He's like, do you want to go at the Nike store? To me? I bet you I could bring her. We go to go into the Nike store, and the guy's like, sorry, this is just for one person. And I go, adam, go shop.
Adam Pally
I'll hang out outside.
Paul Scheer
And he goes, no, no, no, no. I'll go drop you off at the hotel. Starts driving back to the hotel, goes, fuck it. We drive past Nike campus. He's like, let's just try something. He goes up, just goes, hey, we're here to tour the Nike campus. And the security guard goes, do I know you? And Adam just goes, yeah, you do. And the guy's like, oh, okay. And we go in, we start walking around the campus. Then this is where Adam really hits a dude just comes by and goes, adam pally. And Adam's like, yeah, what's going on? He goes, oh, I'm just a huge fan. He's like, oh, are you guys touring? And he's like. And Adam goes, well, not officially. I'm just kind of. And the guy goes, well, let me take you around. Takes us on like a two hour tour. Halfway through the tour, Adam goes, what do you do here? He goes, I'm the head of tours. This dude just happened to be a pal y fan that we ran into. Took it. And then he. And Adam's like, my man doesn't have an invite to the Nike store. He's like, I got you. I got you. We did like an, like a underground tour.
John Gabris
Like, he did everything in the Nike campus. Like every room. Like the Jordan center, the athletic center. We got a two hour private tour. We just showed up. Yeah.
Paul Scheer
And truly a guy just saw us, like, kind of weirdly lingering around, looking
John Gabris
at the prefontaine statue.
Adam Pally
That is amazing. Like, see, I thought I had a good Nike story where I was invited to that secret Nike shop in la. Have you ever.
John Gabris
Oh, yeah, yeah, I've been there.
Adam Pally
Where it's like. It's like in an office park.
John Gabris
Very severance. It's like, yes, it's an office park. Then you walk. It's all white.
Adam Pally
Yes.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And then all of a sudden, you walk through this wall and you're in this, like, cool thing. I was designing my own shoes. The only thing that was really awkward about it was at the end, they have like a basketball court.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And you're with somebody.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And it's like, well, I would like to take shots, but I don't want to watch you. I don't want you to be watching me take shots. It feels like, weird.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And you want to take some shots? Like, no.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Yeah. I would like to leave now. If you weren't here, I would do it.
John Gabris
Like the shot. Yeah.
Adam Pally
I'm not taking this shot. It felt really weird about the whole.
John Gabris
Do you like your hyper dunks?
Adam Pally
But it was so cool to like. I mean, I still. I love shoes and sneakers and I like. Yeah. My son just did his first, like, like. Like a presentation for school where he had to do like an oral report.
John Gabris
Cool.
Adam Pally
20 minute oral report.
John Gabris
I bet he killed it.
Adam Pally
And he did it on Jordan's. Yeah, it was.
John Gabris
He's your son. I feel like you, You're. If I can't imagine your son not Being good in front of a.
Adam Pally
Well, you know, he turns it up in different ways. He's a big sportsman. And that was like. He just said, I want to talk about Nikes and I want to talk about Jordans. And he did a. A full presentation. I learned about Jordan's. And he was really into it. And it was like, any, like, teachers from other classes came in. I was very proud of him. But I also just love that he focused on sneakers and.
John Gabris
Have you shown him air?
Adam Pally
No, I was going to, but June's like, I think it's too adult. And I was like, we're watching traitors. What are we doing here?
John Gabris
I was trying. There isn't. It's just in offices.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
They curse a lot, if that's an issue.
Adam Pally
Cursing is like. Yeah. Like, these kids see it all.
John Gabris
I mean, Fortnite.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Fortnite.
John Gabris
Drake plays Fortnite. And he has.
Paul Scheer
It's like American History X.
John Gabris
It truly is. And he's got, like, Curb Stomper. It really like, any.
Adam Pally
And Eddie Norton Skin ready to go.
John Gabris
The way that he plays it is that he has, like, this group of, like, four friends. Yeah. Meanwhile, he's. He's seven.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
That he FaceTimes. So all he puts his iPad, right. And all four of them are in FaceTime, but you can't see any of them because all the iPads are standing straight up into the ceiling. And you just hear like, fuck that. You know, like, meet me. Meet me in the shed. We'll fucking take this guy. Like. And you're like, drakey boy, are you all right?
Paul Scheer
Is there a part of you that wants to be like, hey, son, I love that you're so into sneakers. And I promise, once you're done completely growing, you can buy all the expensive sneakers in the world.
Adam Pally
Well, that's the thing.
Paul Scheer
Because he's, like, got to be blowing through them every year.
Advertisement/Announcer
Right.
Adam Pally
But. Oh, I mean, even more quicker than that. Like. But what I try to do is get him a nice sneaker for playing basketball.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And that's what he cares about. He has, like, Anthony Edwards that he wears AE1. Yeah. AE1.
John Gabris
There's a great Dr. Green sneakers. Anthony Edwards.
Paul Scheer
Goose 11.
Adam Pally
Yeah. I got to ask them. Popping off.
John Gabris
I got to ask him if it was Anthony Edwards because Cole, my son. My oldest, is playing in them.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And we're having a problem with the laces.
Adam Pally
Oh, really?
John Gabris
Yeah. Because the laces are so thick.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
That they. It's. They even double triple knots. They're popping open.
Adam Pally
You know, my son's shoes are always untied. And I'm always, like, watching games like,
John Gabris
oh, I'm the worst parent. I would, like, be like, there'll be some free throw line. Yes.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
Like, Cole will be, like, trying to box out at the free throw line while someone else is doing it. I'll be like, cole.
Paul Scheer
Oh, I.
Adam Pally
Well, June. June kind of has done a couple. My wife has done things where she's, like, reprimanded Gus about his sportsmanlike conduct. Like, at the end of games, like, June just marches across the court and, like, you never do that again because, like, Gus will mouth to some refs. He's like, what?
John Gabris
What? Well, I mean, he's been watching Luca.
Adam Pally
Yeah, right?
John Gabris
Like, that's like the NBA, you know,
Paul Scheer
having a beer after the game.
Adam Pally
Oh, my God. I'm forgetting his name right now. But we were. We were at a AAU game, which is, like, the kids basketball thing, and. And Gus was going to the bathroom. He was at the urinal, and. And he's like, man, these refs suck. And then the bathroom door, like, the. The stall door opened, and the ref. It was like. It was. No, it was a former Clipper. And I'm blanking on his name right now. For whatever reason, he's part of Lob City. And he's like, say that again. And Gus is like, yeah, validated. Like, wrong lesson. Wrong lesson. Like, basically, like a. An NBA player came out to be like, you're right, my man.
Paul Scheer
The refs do suck.
John Gabris
And let me tell your dad about crypto. I want to get your dad into bitcoin.
Adam Pally
All right, I'll buy your co.
John Gabris
He'll buy your dogecoin. DeAndre Hunter. No, that's who it was, right? Lob City. It was.
Adam Pally
It was I forgetting his name, and I could see his face. But it was like, he.
John Gabris
He's.
Adam Pally
He was great. It was It. But he was like, say that again. And like, Gus, I think, has taken that on forever now that he like,
Paul Scheer
well, you're like, hey, don't talk to the refs like that.
Adam Pally
You're like, well, and by the way, I. I want to respect refs. I love refs. I've been a ref. I do ref for, like, soccer when I'm not coaching.
Paul Scheer
Here's.
Adam Pally
I'll say, those refs at aau. I watched one. When the clock hit noon, the game was still on. He's like, oh, I'm done.
John Gabris
Oh, yeah.
Adam Pally
Like, they're not.
John Gabris
He walked off.
Paul Scheer
Who wins?
John Gabris
Yeah, my. My daughter plays volleyball, and I was. We were Just telling Jerry. Volleyball for girls is like the biggest. It's huge. It's just like. Yeah, they travel. They aau. It's like a huge thing. The refs and, and I, I, they couldn't play without them. So it's like amazing. But you can't, you can't make a ref. Like it's, it's 11:00am on a Saturday.
Adam Pally
It's. Yeah.
John Gabris
Fort Greene, you know, and, and everyone's just trying to like get through this hour and it's hot and it smells.
Paul Scheer
70 of the parents have to go to a different game with a different kid before or after.
Adam Pally
Yeah, you're just like, you're just in the, like Sunday morning, 8am game, 10am game. It's like it, it hurt. It rocks you to your core.
Advertisement/Announcer
Yeah.
John Gabris
And you're sitting on those bleachers and the, and I, I like, I look at the refs and they're just like, point.
Adam Pally
Yep, point.
John Gabris
You know, and you're like, I feel you. Like, I, I don't know how, I don't know how a ref could get up for that, like to come and be like, well, I gotta get my coffee and Then go ref 13 year old girl volleyball. Like, they're, they're doing the job.
Adam Pally
They're doing the Lord's work 100%. And there's sometimes there's some great, like, do a little show for the parents, which I really do enjoy. I'm here for that.
Paul Scheer
I'm, I'm as a, as a showman myself. When the refs wants to give a big spiel. I'm here for love. Spiel.
John Gabris
You don't want the ref to be like, whatever, whatever, whatever. You want them to be like, all right, here's what we're going to do, boys. Yeah.
Adam Pally
And it's like, keep it a little fun. It's, it's kids. It's kids. It's not professional. I mean, yeah, it's, it's an intense thing. I mean, but I have, I, when I was a ref, I still am, I guess, but when one time.
John Gabris
You're never not a rapper.
Adam Pally
Thank you. In my car right now, I got my yellow shirt ready to go. You say it. I do work at the Foot Locker
Paul Scheer
in Sherman for discount.
Adam Pally
I kicked a parent off the field.
Advertisement/Announcer
Really?
Paul Scheer
Yeah, I did.
Adam Pally
Because there's a thing with AYSO soccer, which I'm a big fan of. Like, it's pretty much AYSO soccer is like a youth league soccer program and their tenant is make the kids wanna come back. Make the Kids have fun. Everyone gets to play. So no kid is.
Paul Scheer
It's not hyper competitive.
Adam Pally
It's just like, it's neighborhood. It's fun. It's like you're still learning, but it's like every kid's playing equal time. It's a beautiful, like, ethic to what they do. I really, really love it because I think it's even worldwide. So you're trying as, like, a ref and as a coach. Keep it light, keep it fun. It can be competitive, but also no drama. So there's this team that had, like, five kids, and the other team had seven kids. And normally what you do is you go, hey, do you want to give us one of your kids? And they'll be like, six on six, or do you want to, like, sit two kids and rotate them in and out? And this guy's like, no, I'm not sitting my kids. We're playing all of them. That's in the rule book. And I was like, well, I know it's in the rule book, but I said, but seven on five? Like, just. Just play, like, five on five or six on six. Whatever, let's make it funny. No, man, it's in the rule book. And he got really aggressive, and I'm like, I don't care if it's in the rulebook. He's like. He's like, look it up. I'm like. And then I got. Then I'm gagging your friends. I'm like, I'm not telling you Tommy Lasorda's. Get out of here. I'm like, this. I'm like, I don't care if it's in the rule book. I'm just saying, like, it's for the kids. And I was like, and more importantly, you're setting a bad example. And that made him get really mad. And now he's like, what do you mean I'm setting a bad example? I'm like, just like that. You're yelling, bad example. And he's like, this is. I was like, just like. And I. So now I'm. All I'm doing is pushing that button there. You do it straight, man. You know exactly how to do this. You're a legend at that. Yeah.
John Gabris
It's like, you're the. You're literally the best person in the world at that.
Adam Pally
So I'm just like, all right.
John Gabris
So.
Adam Pally
And then.
John Gabris
And then.
Adam Pally
And then I go, that's it. You're out of here. You can't do that. I didn't know if I could do that. I don't know if that's a rule. Get out of here. He left. He left, and then a year later, he was coaching my son's team. But it was. Wow. It was a great moment because it was also like, you got to set a good example for kids. I think that that's the whole thing, too, is like, how do you. When you're trying to teach them, like, sportsmanship and look, if my kids go into professional sports, it would be amazing. I would love it.
Paul Scheer
The probability of that. No offense to any parent. Exactly. Is almost zero. Exactly.
Adam Pally
And that's. And so, like, the fact that we pretend that it's higher is like, what are we doing here?
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
No, you're not gonna say that to your kid who goes, I want to be a pro ballplayer. You don't go like. It's actually nearly impossible.
Adam Pally
By the way, this is what Jun used to do early on. Like, I told June, I was like, you can't do this. She's like, no, that's impossible. I'm like, june, like, he's five. He wants to play. He's going to be in the NBA. He's going to be in the NBA. Like, well, it could be June's.
Paul Scheer
June's statuette. He could be 76.
John Gabris
It's so TR. It's triggering to me because, like, Jewish families.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
It is like, a common phrase. From the moment you're a child, you tell someone, like, your dream, and they go, jews don't do that. It is so, like, there is direct verbiage of me being like, I want to be a basketball player, and my mom being like, jews don't play basketball.
Adam Pally
I mean, look, my.
Paul Scheer
My family, in my experience, I don't know about professional level, but Jews be balling.
John Gabris
No. Jews play basketball.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Every Jewish guy I know plays a lot of.
Adam Pally
Just because that they're fighting against. Exactly.
John Gabris
That's what I'm saying. They all have been told, you're never gonna make it to the pros. From the moment they pick up a basketball, it's like, the one. But if you're, like, academic or anything, it's like, yeah, that's where you belong. You study those things.
Adam Pally
Oh, yeah. I come from an Italian family, which I think has a lot of overlap with Jewish.
John Gabris
Yeah. And Long Island.
Adam Pally
Yeah, Long Island. I remember the first time we went to Disney World again. My kids were young and. And they were excited to see, like, Woody and Buzz from Toy Story, and they were psyched, you know, and it was great. And. And my youngest was like, oh, my God, I got to meet Woody. And she's like, well, it's just a guy in a suit. And I watch and I watch my
John Gabris
first lay.
Adam Pally
Like, you have to put a lot. Like, it really does. It's an amazing thing. It's like, yes. I've seen them in movies now they're giant. They don't.
John Gabris
The logic is odd to begin with. Yes.
Adam Pally
But they've bought in. And I was like, june, what are you doing? And it's like, well, I'm not lying to them. This is guy in a suit. I'm like, it's like, now the case
Paul Scheer
can be made that it all makes sense to whatever you want to do in that moment. But you're also like, let's wait one year.
Adam Pally
My whole thing is this. It's not hurting anyone, right? Like, I know a lot of people got their issues about how they're going to deal with Santa Claus, with their kids. Like, whatever. I'll get into it. But I mean. But, like, it's just like, it's hard because I think. I think we get so used to. I want to give my kids everything. I want to make sure they know what's up. But then there's a fine line. You still have to create, like, fantasy, and you have to create, like, dreams and hopes and desires. Like, they'll figure out if they'll get into NBA. Like, last night, my son, who's 8, was like, yeah, I'm probably gonna play on Liverpool for soccer. And I was like, cool.
John Gabris
I was like.
Adam Pally
So I was like, it's gonna. I was like, I'm gonna be bummed to miss you to be in the uk. He's like, I'll come visit.
John Gabris
I was like, all right.
Adam Pally
You know, and that was it. Oh, no, my coffee, bronnie.
John Gabris
Here, new brawny 3 ply is now more absorbent.
Adam Pally
Wow.
Paul Scheer
Got a clean shirt.
John Gabris
Do you wear plaid? Some of the strongest. So, Paul. So we. We ask everybody this, but just take us through what you're doing to stay alive. Like, what. What's your. What's your physical and mental reg.
Adam Pally
Okay, for me, it's like multifaceted, multi pronged. I find that the biggest thing that I can do is not deprive myself or subscribe to something so exclusively that it makes me either hate it in six months or, like, just get like, I want to jump out of my skin. Like, people who are like, I don't eat dessert. I'm like, eat dessert. Just don't eat the whole fucking thing. Or, like, not every meal. Yeah, yeah. I'm primarily a pescetarian, but if I see barbecue, I'll eat it. Like, but not all the time, but I will, like, I will, I will touch into those things. So I'm not like, craving it or not feeling, like.
John Gabris
Not depriving yourself of anything.
Adam Pally
Exactly. And I. But at the same time, I'm able to, like, draw. And then it allows me to draw these, like, lines that, like, that just kind of, I think, hold me together a little bit more.
Paul Scheer
You hear a lot of people say, like, the 80, 20 principle. Like, oh, let's stick to something like 80 of the time. And that's going to be great. Like if you're a pescatarian, 80 of the time, but 20 of the time, you're jamming down ribs, you're gonna be all right.
John Gabris
Yeah, yeah.
Adam Pally
Well, it's like the whole idea too is like, you just. It's all about, like, balance on some level. Like, somebody said this thing I thought was really good. Like, mental health wise, they're like, you know, whenever you get into a fight with somebody, they'll say something that maybe labels you. And then your immediate response is like, fuck that. No, I'm not that. And you get into, like, this fight. And it's because I think that we get this feeling of, I don't want to be attacked. I'm actually a good person. I'm a good person. You can't say that about me. I'm not that. And I know I can fall into that trap too. And I think that this mentality was really interesting. It's like, think of yourself as a good. Ish person. Like, I am. I'm pretty. I'm primarily good. I'm pretty good. But yeah, I fuck up sometimes too. And if you start to, like, look at yourself as that, you're open to criticism, you're not holding yourself to a higher standard. And you're allowed, you're allowed to be like, oh, I can be better. But I'm. I'm. I'm mostly good, but I, I fuck up too. And I think it's like, it's a weird way of thinking, but I think it follows that same idea. It's like, yeah, I still have stuff to learn. I still have places to go.
John Gabris
It's really, it's a. It's a very, like, open way to live your life. Because I think the reason that people get into those things is control, right? Because we're all just spiraling towards death and no one knows any answers. So people get these rules in place to be like, this is how I cling to sanity. Right? This is how I get through the day by doing this specific thing in these rules and ways. So it is kind of brave to be like, yeah, I don't know. I don't know what's best. I'll try something. I'll.
Adam Pally
You know, And I think it's sort of like what makes you feel good, you know? And it's like. And it's. I said when we had kids originally, or. This is the advice I give to anyone who has kids, is like, don't feel pressure by anyone else's advice, because the way you're gonna parent is gonna be different than somebody else. And what works for one person doesn't always work for you. And it's like, well, you put your baby down like this, then it's gonna be. It's like, well, that's. I have two kids. They were both very different. Different things happen with them both. And it's like, you have to be open to just knowing. It's like, well, what's good for them is not good for you. Like, somebody.
Paul Scheer
And even us as babies, like, our parents generation, it's like, we are already doing car seats.
Adam Pally
I don't remember a car seat ever.
Paul Scheer
Everyone is doing better than our parents did to us, 100%. And that's a big step.
Adam Pally
I was saying that, like, there's our parents, like, and their parents had a closer connection than us and our parents, because, like, we. I think there's. There's been a lot of mental health work that I think. Oh, you know, universally. Not specifically, you know, but that has, like, gotten us to a place. I think that we are just more open as parents and are a little bit more, like, finding that balance of still being a parent, but also somebody that our kids can talk to and have, like, an open conversation with.
Paul Scheer
I think this generation also benefited from, and this is sort of anecdotal, but being a little older when you had the kids.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Having a little bit more developed as an adult. Like, my mom thinking, my mom was 21 when she.
John Gabris
Yeah. My dad had me when he was 21.
Adam Pally
My mom. My mom and dad had me, I think when they were. Before 25. I know. Yeah.
John Gabris
I mean, that's crazy.
Paul Scheer
When my mom was this age, she was at my senior college graduation.
Adam Pally
Yeah. That is wild. But, you know, it comes a lot in health stuff, because whatever you're doing, someone's out there to tell you. Well, actually, not that. Yeah. And we were just talking about this before we started taping Like, I love the cold plunge. I found a lot of success.
John Gabris
We were gonna ask you about that because. Do you have one in your house?
Adam Pally
I do. I also flooded my house with it, but that's why it's outside now.
John Gabris
It's outside. How did you flood your house with it?
Adam Pally
I fucked up.
Paul Scheer
You went above the Phil hairline.
John Gabris
He sat in it.
Adam Pally
So I had this small. A smaller cold plunge. It was a good one. And. Oh, man. It's a little back into a couple things.
John Gabris
Were you keeping it in the garage
Adam Pally
or do you have, like, a little. A little gym area that we have? It's very small. It's like a. Like, it's almost like a prison gym. It's just like, concrete walls.
John Gabris
They don't have gyms in prison.
Adam Pally
Well, they got it, But to me is like, you know, so we have this, like, smaller area. So I had it in there, and it was great. I loved it. And that day, I didn't take my ADD medication. I was cooking dinner. I put the hose in there to fill it up. It takes a little bit of time. I checked on it once, I checked on it twice. Totally forgot about it because I got caught up in this Hulu documentary about this woman who faked her own death. And I went downstairs. I was like, oh, my God. I flooded and hose running. It was about an inch of water, and luckily it was in the basement. It was not, but it. I haven't felt this way since I was, like, 15 years old. I thought, I'm in trouble. Yeah, I'm in trouble. I was like, oh, no, no.
Paul Scheer
This is my house.
Adam Pally
This is my house. I like. I'm like, who's gonna yell at me? But I don't know. Like, it was like, she's gonna yell at you. But oddly, she didn't even yell because I was like. I just felt like, you know, it's like. I don't. Like, it's my. Like, I realized this. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Like, there is, like. If I see something in front of my house, like, a piece of paper or, like, garbage, I look at it. I'm like, fucking garbage in front of my house. I'm like. And then I realize, oh, if I don't pick it up, no one will, right? And then I pick it up, and then I'm like, oh, that's what I need to be doing. I realized it's like a little metaphor for like, yeah, you gotta fucking pick up shit. Even if you didn't put it there, you can't just walk by it. So, yeah, I felt this pressure of like, oh, fuck, I fucked up. So now the cold plunge is outside, But I've been doing it for, like, two and a half years now.
John Gabris
Really. Now, physical benefits, I've read anecdotally, and this is again, like, I know nothing, but I've read that the physical benefits are not as. It's not like a sauna where, like, sauna. There are statistics, and it's like, this is where the jury's out scientifically.
Adam Pally
It's so interesting because I was excited to come on the show to talk about this because there's a study that was released this week about cold plunging. And I read it. And first of all, a lot of the studies on cold plunging are very, like, loose science. It's like 3,000 people across all these ages. It's like, it doesn't. And so. And it was like, well. And the article was like, some benefits, some deficits. I was like, huh?
John Gabris
Deficits, Right?
Adam Pally
And so then I typed in cold plunge study, and it was all the same study, 10 different articles. And so I'm like, good for you. Bad for you, good. I was like, wait, how? Like, everyone read this study.
Paul Scheer
Pull whatever details you need to make whatever thesis.
John Gabris
Yeah, it sounds like. It sounds like big sauna is out of the cold plunge.
Adam Pally
Well, I get those. Those fucking guys with their heat, their rocks.
Paul Scheer
A song of ice and fire. As always,
Adam Pally
what I like. What I like about cold plunging in the general sense is it's been around for a long time, right? Like when I was going to the Russian baths back in New York, it's like, you cold plunge, you do the steam room. You go back and forth. You should end on the cold plunge, not the steam. Yeah, but that's been there. That's like something that's been around for a long time. It's not like. It's not like a red light, which apparently is good for you. But it's like, it's not new. It's not new tech. It's just cold water, right? And. And I believe in that. Like, because, like, I'm like, oh. And then we look at athletes. Well, they've been getting in cold plunges their entire career. Like, every player ever see, they're wrapped in ice, they're in the ice bag, they're in the thing. So, like, on that level, it was interesting. But then what I really love about it is, and I think it comes down to this idea, which is, if you do it, it's never fun, it's never Like, I can't wait. The getting in. Like the moment before you get in. Once I'm in, I'm fine. But the moment before I get in, it's like you're doing something kind of impossible. And you're starting to. Mentally, I think, to your point, you're training your mind. Like, I can do hard things. Right. Like every day. If you start off every day going, I can do a hard thing, then the day becomes easy.
Paul Scheer
Yeah. And you're not at like risk for death or anything with this. So it. You're like simulating it mentally where you're like, I don't want to do this, but I must. And it's like that's. That feels to your body like you're standing up against a.
John Gabris
How cold is your thing?
Adam Pally
So I know that technically the, the science has shown that anything below 59°59 and below for three minutes five times a week, that is like where the Mac. That's where the health benefits are. Right. But now you have insane people who will jack that down to like 30.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And then like their testicles shrivel up inside their body. I've seen like, crazy shit.
Paul Scheer
And I see so many images of testicles.
Adam Pally
Oh, man. I'm watching, I'm looking.
John Gabris
Then I googled. Then I googled shriveled up testicles from Ice Bag. I read a bunch of articles, good and bad on that.
Paul Scheer
I typed in S H and then immediately went to shriveled up.
Adam Pally
I was so proud of myself because we were in Sketch Fest this week and. And I was talking to Lisa Gilroy and we were talking about John Wayne Bobbitt. Were you there for this when we were talking about. Maybe not like we were talking about.
John Gabris
I remembered that conversation.
Adam Pally
So we were talking about John Wayne Bobbitt. And she's like, well, he didn't really know the story about.
John Gabris
Because she's young.
Adam Pally
Yeah, right. His dick got cut off. And she's from Canada too.
John Gabris
So I think it's definitely. It missed.
Adam Pally
Right?
John Gabris
She's from the woods of Canada. John Wayne Bobbitt.
Adam Pally
It was. It wasn't.
Paul Scheer
It wasn't all you talked about in seventh grade. Obsessed with the idea this is the worst possible thing that could happen to someone.
Adam Pally
It is insane. And she.
John Gabris
Out the window, found it on the road.
Adam Pally
So like, she's like, I wonder. I go, I. I know that he got it repaired because he did porn. Like that's what I remember as a kid. Like he was in a porn. And that was like part of the.
John Gabris
But a fuuko.
Adam Pally
But a Fuko was in a porn, too.
John Gabris
Yeah, they all were.
Adam Pally
And that was. I think they fuck each other, Joe. You know, I bet you there could have been one of these if there was.
John Gabris
That is the tape I need.
Adam Pally
All right, So I. But I. I typed in John Wayne Bobbitt's dick, and I just. And like, like this and, like, gave it because I was like. She's like, I want to see it. I'm like, you look at it, not me. I don't need. I don't need the image in my head. She's like, look at it. I'm like, nope. And I was like, like, got it off my bed. Like, I was like, I don't need this. But. But cold plunging, like, what I. So where I'm at is like, I do 49 or 50 degrees. I do it for five minutes, and I'm. I try to be underwater for 45 seconds to 90 seconds. Like, that's. I can kind of hold my breath under there for that.
Paul Scheer
Fully submerged.
Adam Pally
Fully submerged.
Paul Scheer
Under.
Adam Pally
Head under.
John Gabris
Wow.
Adam Pally
I.
Paul Scheer
So when I get in my cold plunge, I go fully under.
Adam Pally
Yes.
Paul Scheer
Fully submerged and then get to, like, that vagus nerve.
Adam Pally
Right. That's what I'm like.
Paul Scheer
And I'm like this for the remainder of the five minutes.
Adam Pally
So I basically do. I go under standard for a couple seconds because at that point my breathing is not, like, ready. So then I pop up like this. And then I kind of do the last minute and a half, you know, like, I didn't for underwater because I feel like I want to get, like, fully. Yeah. I do.
Paul Scheer
I do my face at the end.
Adam Pally
That's what I do. Yeah.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
We briefly spoke about this. If it came out that the cold plunge is completely placebo.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
And doesn't actually do anything physically. I still think it would never drop from my routine.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
For how I feel after. It's like my meditation maybe or something.
Adam Pally
Well, that's what I was going to say. Like, you're in there and you are like. I think you can focus on breath work. And that's like the Wim Hof method. Right. Is like this idea, like. And just getting that breathing. It is meditation. And I've done meditation. I love meditation with two kids. It's not really in the cards. Yeah.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
But it's. But that's my time where I can't do anything else. I'm in a fucking freezing cold tub. Like.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
So it's like I'm just there and I'm just, like, zoning out. And I feel I feel great.
John Gabris
Like.
Adam Pally
And I agree. I would not take it out now. Here's what I'll say. I'd be hard pressed to say it does nothing because. Agreed it. Like, I used to feel like I needed massages a lot more. I played tennis like, three or four times a week. I don't get, like, pulled muscles. I feel like that is really, like, helps my body heal better. I'm like, it. It just feels like my body feels.
Paul Scheer
It's gotta objectively help with inflammation 100%. That's so obvious because like, you were saying, like, every athlete's done it forever. You know what I mean?
John Gabris
I mean, there's a reason, like, the. My. The makeup artist on Happy Endings who I saw. Kathleen.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
Adam Pally
I love Kathleen. Yeah. She's amazing.
John Gabris
Every day she would take a big bucket of ice and do the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood with me.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And take my face even if I wasn't hungover because I just have such a puffy, big face every day.
Adam Pally
Well, this is.
John Gabris
And it works. It really works.
Adam Pally
This is. Paul Newman did that every single day.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And I guess Tom Hanks was just on Dax Shepard or something. He was like, that's what I learned from Paul Newman, like, every day. Now Tom Hanks is every day too. It's a. It is good. It, like, actually like it.
Paul Scheer
I think it's invigorating. At minimum. You're like, whoa.
John Gabris
It feels good to rely on it to work. You know? I mean, I was like.
Adam Pally
But it stimulates you. It's. I think it's a good. It's a good remind. I just think it, like, wakes up your body. It's better than coffee. And there's a lot of, like, research that also says that, like, it gives you a, like, add meds can work, like, for 12 hours or so. That can give you a longer, more sustained engagement.
John Gabris
Engagement.
Adam Pally
No. Not even with the medicine. Like, almost in place of the medicine.
John Gabris
No way.
Adam Pally
That's what my doctor is saying.
John Gabris
Well, because you and I suffer from that.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
A ton. And need. Like, I need medication.
Adam Pally
I'm on medication.
John Gabris
People. When people. We toured together.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And when I forgot my medication, it is noticeable.
Adam Pally
Oh, yeah.
Paul Scheer
This guy is. This guy is already a minimum two to three room keys per week to his hotel. When we were in Miami and there was a prescription mess up. And we're waiting on it. We got into our. The talent car and there was like 12 four seasons. I was like, Adam is spiraling.
John Gabris
Oh, yeah. No, I just. I can't keep it Together. Too many things going on. And. And. And I, like, leave doors open. I leave drawers open. I like. We'll stop. I'll stop tasks in the middle. 100%, you know, all that stuff. And it gets really, really bad. So to know that maybe the cold plunge could help with that is interesting.
Adam Pally
It will. I think it. But I think the whole thing with the cold plunges is it's not like it's. And this is. I don't want to sound like this because I had somebody come after me about cold plunges the other day.
John Gabris
Oh, we should tell you we don't. We don't engage with our audience.
Adam Pally
Okay, great. Great. All right. There you go.
Paul Scheer
And we do, like, intense disclaimers.
John Gabris
We don't want to hear from the garbage people that are listening to this.
Adam Pally
All I'll say is like, that I can say there are definite benefits that I feel. But the. I think it only starts to work when it is a part of, like a regimen. Like, when it is consistent. Consistent. Cause it's like. And I think you will get like that woof. Like, it's like drinking like a Red Bull. Like, you'll get that. But I think like a consistency will be shown when you're in it a lot. And I love it.
Paul Scheer
And more anecdotal stuff. I really like the way my body looks right after the cold plunge. It feels tighter. My skin is a little better because it's like you're.
Adam Pally
You are almost flexing your body like you're burning. That's what they say. It helps you lose weight too. It helps you slim down. Like I'm like. And I. So I'll do that. And I do like a red light sauna. I play tennis. I.
John Gabris
Are you jimming?
Adam Pally
I don't gym. I have, like I said, they have that little, like prison gym. The non prison gym. But no, like, I'll do.
Paul Scheer
That's where you said June sharpened up that toothbrush.
Adam Pally
While you're walking by. She's like, desanto says hello. The.

It took me 40 years, you're telling me ye 40 love that guy. To realize that little thing in the pizza pie was to separate your slices.
Adam Pally
And I'm like, first of all, I'm like, every now and then I'm like, this guy has some good stuff.
John Gabris
Oh yeah, yeah. But it's just crazy how like he has to.
Paul Scheer
Next time, either one of you or serve this guy, please message.
John Gabris
I need to see his. He has to produce content. Like he, yeah, he, he started as just the guy that would come up on my feet. I'd be like, hold on, you're telling me for 40 years and now he's gotta find this. And it's becoming less and less like, like to the point where you're telling
Paul Scheer
me when the light's green, you drive.
John Gabris
Yeah. Hold on. For 40 years you're telling me that little door on the door was for the dog? I've been walking through that thing, getting
Adam Pally
stuck my whole life. Like, like the, the, like that, you know, I, so I, I got into this thing a while ago that I swear by and I tell everybody because people like, I don't have time to work out. I don't have time to work out. I'm like, like, if you can fuck around on the Internet for 30 minutes, you have time to work out.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And so my entry point for everybody who's not working out is if you can get on a treadmill, you do it in a gym, do it anywhere. Put it on 12 incline and put it on 2, 2, 5 and just walk for half an hour. Like, if you do that every single day, you will get in some version of being in shape.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And you can scrolling. You can do whatever you want. You can watch a movie, but it's like, just do like, that's the minimum. And you can still fuck around on the Internet, like, whatever.
Paul Scheer
I texted him about this. I was, I. I hit the incline treadmill of walk yesterday. I did a half hour at 12.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
The woman next to me, absolute smoke show, by the way, was reading a book while walking on the treadmill and turning pages. I was so envious.
Advertisement/Announcer
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
And I'm like, I'm. Meanwhile, I'm watching like, you know, YouTube on like. Yeah. And I was like, oh, that's fucking. You actually stumbled upon something here because, Paul, you're maybe one of the hardest working people I know in our.
Adam Pally
Oh, I think you guys are.
Paul Scheer
Well, you have like, you have like 60 projects. You're always on the cusp of something. You're. Whether it's you and Hubel, you're you
Adam Pally
and Jason and June, you get thousands of dollars. Right?
John Gabris
Right.
Paul Scheer
You say the king of. The king of W9.
John Gabris
You're prolific, though. You really are prolific. It's multitasking. I think I know exactly what you're going to say. Like, is multitasking something that helps you because of your add? Like, you're saying like, oh, but put. You're doing two things at once, right? You're like scrolling, you're walking, you're.
Adam Pally
I think that like, when. Before I died, before I was diagnosed with ADHD or whatever it is, is like, I. I felt like I was a building that was in perennial scaffolding. Like, you ever see those buildings, New York City or anything? Or you're like, when are they gonna fucking finish this building? Like, what's going on? Like, why is it taking this long? So I had a lot of systems and structures to keep me in check. Like, so I don't notice, like, my productivity being changed. Although June says I should up my meds because I'm on a very low. I'm on a child's dose.
John Gabris
What do you. What. If you don't mind, because I can
Adam Pally
tell you what I'm on, I will happily tell you. The only reason why I don't ever, like, talk about it specifically is because I'm like, I know it's to each Their own on what medicine works from. But I'm on Vyvanse 20 milligrams.
John Gabris
Oh, that's the same thing I'm on.
Adam Pally
Okay, so there.
John Gabris
Great. Yeah. That's an appropriate amount for someone our size, right?
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
Right? Yes. Because a little more will jack you to the moon.
Adam Pally
Well, that's what I kind of feel like. And, yeah, so I feel like I am in control. Although, what was interesting was I was noticing some things with my son, my older son, and I was like, this is me. This is me as a kid, and I had just gone through my own diagnosis, and it's like one of those things, like, you know when you have friends who stop drinking or that have. I don't want to call them alcoholic, but whatever. They'll say, oh, you drink. They start to see it. And I didn't want to be that person where I'm, like, seeing ADHD and everything. I saw it in my son. I was like, this is it. And it took me a bit to kind of convince my wife to kind of. Can we just, like, explore this and go. And we went and we did, like, this massive testing with him, and he got his diagnosis, and we put him on medicine. And, like. Like, it was. Yeah, like a Shocking. Shocked me to a degree. Like, his turnaround was amazing.
John Gabris
Same. Almost the same thing with Cole.
Adam Pally
Okay. So, yeah, it's like. It's. It's amazing. And what I noticed his doctor did was he's like, you start off at the lowest dose, then we do that for, like, two weeks, then go to the next dose, do that for two weeks. And then he kept on going up. And then we hit a point where we got to a thing where he couldn't sleep. It was like he took the. The dosage, and he's like. And he's like, okay, that's. Now we've gone too far back, and we go back down. And then that's the one that's kind of perfect. My doctor just gave me one, so I've never gone up or lower or anything.
John Gabris
So maybe you should. I mean, I don't know.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I feel fine with it.
John Gabris
I went up because similarly, Daniella was like, are you sure you're on adhd?
Adam Pally
Right. That's what you know, say to me, too.
John Gabris
And then. And so I went up to 40.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And was like, couldn't. I was just, like, up awake, staring at the ceiling.
Adam Pally
Okay.
John Gabris
24 hours a day. And then that started to get me crazy. So I was like, yeah, can't do this. But I also have a mix of anti. I mean, I'm gonna. I mean, we run through our stats all the time. I mean, I'm. I'm on a whole list of medications, like, you know, antidepressant, adhd, blood pressure, statin, like, all that stuff. I. I feel like what I learned from watching my son, when we gave him medicine and his world opened up, I was like, oh, medicine works.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And I need to take this medicine every day so that I stay alive.
Adam Pally
Well, that guy. So I. I wrote about this in my book a little bit, too. Like, I wrote a chapter about finding out that I had ADHD, like, in my 40s, and I was like. And it was the chapter I wanted to take out of my book. I was like, this feels like. And everyone was like, no, no, no. And my editor was like, this actually helped me diagnose my husband. And I was like, all right, I'll leave it. And it's been one of those chapters that so many people talk to me about, because I just kind of go through my own experience about finding that out for myself. Because I was. To your credit, like, to your point, like, I think I was. I was doing a lot of stuff and successfully doing stuff, but I didn't. It felt like I was kind of like, just holding it. Like, I was like, you know, bear hugging it.
John Gabris
My friend Brandon calls it refers to that feeling of, like, undiagnosed ADHD as like, speeding in a parked car.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
John Gabris
Because you're just like, well, yeah.
Adam Pally
Right. Yeah, you're just. And you don't like. And it's like, in you. It's such a part of who you are that it's hard to see that you're not that, like. Right. And. And what you can do. And.
John Gabris
Well, yeah.
Paul Scheer
You find yourself going like, well, I'm the guy who blanks.
Adam Pally
Right.
John Gabris
Right.
Paul Scheer
And it's like, even if it's a behavior I don't want to have.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Or that's affecting my life negatively, even on a minor level. You go like, well, that's me. I'm a forgetful guy.
John Gabris
That's me.
Paul Scheer
I'm an overeater.
Adam Pally
That's me.
John Gabris
And it's like, addiction. That can be a lot of things. Like, I'm known as the party guy or, oh, yeah. As the guy relatable.
Paul Scheer
I've been, like, stunt eating since I was 12.
John Gabris
You ate a snake. Yeah.
Paul Scheer
I, like, need to back out of that, where I'm like. Like, no one is impressed with how much you eat. There's no mom going My big strong Italian boy eating another meatball. Like, I have to. That is in my brain. The clean plate club. All that stuff that I got, like, praise for is like, arguably killing me now.
Adam Pally
You know what? It's so interesting because it's like the biggest change of my life that I've ever experienced is. Did you guys drink water when you were a kid?
John Gabris
No.
Adam Pally
No. That was not even an option as a thing. It was like, what? What am I?
Paul Scheer
Yeah, we were a waterhouse. Which is crazy because in hindsight it was because we were broke and I didn't know. But all my friends had soda and juices at their house.
Adam Pally
We had.
Paul Scheer
Milk and water were the only two options.
Adam Pally
Even with dinner. I would drink out of like 2 liter bottles of soda.
John Gabris
Oh, I would. The juice was huge in my house. Like an orange juice or a grape juice would get like, demolished.
Paul Scheer
We had no juices and no sodas in our house growing up. I remember we had like just Cheez its and water.
John Gabris
When I. When I was blue fl.
Adam Pally
When I was first doing ucb, I was hanging out with this guy, Aaron Bergeron, super funny writer. The best. And we would go back to my apartment, both of us get like a liter bottle of cola. Like, whatever. Our cola. Maybe it was Mountain Dew, maybe it was Coke. And we'd just be chugging that. Playing like Dreamcast. And like the best. Like, life was great. And it was like. And doing it at 11 o' clock at night. Like, it's also like, not like I was like. Yeah.
John Gabris
Would wait to eat food till I was done interning at the theater, like, cleaning up. Respect though. And then I would get home at like 2 in the morning, wired from all that I. From all that I'd done and seen and order a full pizza and sit and watch a movie with like director's commentary on and go through the pizza.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And be so happy. It was like, truly one of the happiest moments of my life.
Paul Scheer
Our dumb careers allow like, like reverses time in some weird way where I ate dinner after midnight like four nights a week.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Like, I eat full, like 2,000 calories. 2,000 calorie meals are not a real thing, but I would have them.
John Gabris
Yeah, no, for sure.
Adam Pally
Like, I would. I mean, my. That, like, that world created like a body clock for me that I think is actually my body's actual clock, which is go to bed at 2am, wake up at 10am if that would be like. That would be my ideal, like, hours.
John Gabris
Those are. Those are your office hours.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Like, but I can't do that.
John Gabris
No. And what are your. What do you. What are you clocking in at right now? Like, what are you. What are you doing?
Adam Pally
12, 1230 to 6, 45, 7.
John Gabris
Wow.
Adam Pally
I know. And that's not enough. And I know, like, everybody's guilting you about.
John Gabris
Yeah. That is like the new.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
Smoking.
Paul Scheer
You're taking a lot of.
John Gabris
I'm taking so much.
Paul Scheer
Anytime someone talks about sleep, Adam's like, well, you know, oh, it's actually really hard for parents and work. And I'm like, totally. It's all just. But I do. I've started getting more sleep and it has changed for me. I'm getting into bed a little and it's crazy to me to be getting into bed at 11pm it feels bananas.
Adam Pally
Right?
Paul Scheer
But I started looking at like, my schedule and being like, what am I doing between 10:30 and night that I can't do from 7 to 8:30?
Adam Pally
Well, this is the other thing too. And maybe you share this with me is like, there is. I think, you know, my medicine's worn off by then. Yes, there is something where I love that silence. There's no emails coming in. There's nothing. It's like, oh, family's asleep. Yeah. And it's like, it is a slightly meditative for me. Like, it's like I'm not like doom scrolling, but I'm like, I feel like light in those hours. I should also be asleep.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Like, there's no, like, you know.
John Gabris
No, there's something. Especially as a parent. There's. We were just talking about this how it's like that time at night, some people go and they play video games.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
John Gabris
Some people go and smoke cigarettes. Your brother works out, you know, But. But that time, similarly, I just. I don't even. I don't even. I'm not even on like, Instagram anymore. I'm like looking at vintage watches on my phone or like, yeah, scrolling guitars. And like, I look forward to that during the day when I'm in like a hectic moment. I'm like, in like eight hours, the kids will be asleep and I'll be looking at these watches on my ph.
Adam Pally
That's what like. And I don't know, like, what your partners are like in this world because it's like June, I like, ideally, I like to watch TV on the couch and I like to go to bed in the bedroom. Like, Right. And June wants to be in bed almost at the same time the kids are in bed. Like, we're watching TV together as a Family in the bed. The minute I get into bed, I'm like, I'm done. And June gets mad at me. I'm like, I. I. My body is trained for that. And then. And then sometimes. But if. If I get, like, wrestled out of that, then I. Then I will stay up late. Like last night, I stayed up too late because June kept on waking me up to watch more severance. She's like, you're falling asleep.
John Gabris
I'm like, are you caught up?
Adam Pally
I'm only on episode. We only on episode two of season two. I'm taking it slow.
John Gabris
Oh, no, you're. You're pretty caught up.
Paul Scheer
I haven't even started season two.
John Gabris
We have one more of season two before you're caught up.
Paul Scheer
People listening to this now already know what season three is going to be.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I know. Well, that's. That's the whole thing too, is like, I also was like, I want to. Like, I was like, we'll take it a little bit slow because who knows how many more years before this.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
John Gabris
For me, I slept one hour last night.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, you're doing great.
John Gabris
I slept one hour. And I woke up. And I woke up to a text.
Adam Pally
Did I text you?
Paul Scheer
Hold on. Let me read the text you sent me because it is kind of funny and it's on game. This is the text I got at 2:54am from Adam Pally. Made it back to hotel across the street. Don't know if it's the hotel I've been staying at, but they put me in a room, carry me to. I think this word's supposed to be glory. Tomorrow if I wake up, it says ga Corey. And I. I didn't get that because I was asleep like an adult. And I Woke up at 7:30.
Adam Pally
I went.
Paul Scheer
I woke up, I'm eating yogurt and drinking coffee like a good boy.
John Gabris
No.
Adam Pally
You know what's so funny is, is I think that you would flop your personalities a little bit, right?
John Gabris
Yes, totally. No, we. We interchange. Like, there are days when I'm that. And. And it's just like last night was. Steph is in town. Warriors are playing. We went to the game. He wanted to do dinner with the. The guy from our show that cooks pasta.
Adam Pally
Okay.
John Gabris
Who let. Who opened up his restaurant? We didn't. I didn't sit down to eat dinner till like 12:30.
Adam Pally
Wow.
John Gabris
At night. And it's like, I haven't done that.
Adam Pally
You must have eaten at the Lakers game too.
John Gabris
I didn't really eat at the Lakers game.
Adam Pally
Because you knew it was Coming.
John Gabris
I was like, I don't want to ruin this. You know, I don't want to ruin this pasta dinner. But what, that.
Paul Scheer
So you didn't drink at the Lakers game either?
John Gabris
No, I was, I didn't. I was sober because I was like, I just want to get to this wine and that. But being friends with a professional athlete is killing me. Like this. Oh, yeah, because he, he didn't stop last night. He has no place to be today. Like, they're getting on a team plane.
Adam Pally
And I heard, it's. I heard from another friend, and this is nothing to do with Steph, but I heard that the warriors go hard. Like the warriors stay out. And I think everybody does.
John Gabris
Yeah, I was gonna say, like, and, and, and go hard is different for a lot of people.
Adam Pally
Like, yeah, they stay out late.
John Gabris
I mean, dinner at 12:30 is like amateur for a lot of NBA players, but for humans like you and I. Yeah. I got home last night was like, oh my God, I ate so much.
Paul Scheer
But that's like, that's improv theater.
Adam Pally
You know what I mean?
Paul Scheer
Like, they're like, we don't get done with everything. I can't have. I can't have a big meal before. So it's like. And. And then they got to do all their like high level million dollar recovery because they're all like absolute insane androids. And then they're like, all right, well, it's 12:30 now. We can cut loose a little because our flight's at 11am tomorrow.
John Gabris
And it was just like, I can't keep up.
Paul Scheer
You're like, I. I have to be at 9am with Jerry O'.
Adam Pally
Connell.
John Gabris
They were like Kangaroo Jack.
Adam Pally
The, the, the. It's so funny. It's like. I know that this is why we were talking earlier about the weekends with these games. That also sucks. Cause as a parent now, it's like I'm getting up every day no matter what because my kids have to get up to go to school. Then I gotta get up on the weekends. Cause my kids have games and things. So it's like I've lost all that sleep in thing. And then whenever I get a chance to sleep in on my birthday. Happy birthday.
Paul Scheer
Happy belated, brother. Paul and I share the 131 birthday. The Aquarians.
Adam Pally
When I like Jean's like, sleep in. I was like, great, 7:30. That's what I got.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
You know, I was like, all right. Yeah. It's like my body is like up at that time. I have. I'm just gotta go.
John Gabris
That's what sucked about last night? Staring like, clock watching. And I was having a good time. I was like, you know, cutting loose. And cast was there. And I had. I knew it wasn't just like being at an NBA.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
But you start clock watching, you start
Paul Scheer
being like, start doing the math backwards. I gotta be there at 8:45, which means I gotta wake up at 7:45, which means right now, if I went to bed now, I only get five.
John Gabris
Right? And then.
Adam Pally
And then you're like. And then you're like, well, I should even go to sleep now. Or.
John Gabris
Exactly.
Paul Scheer
You know, and then I'm packing when
Adam Pally
I'm in the hotel, and like, every
Paul Scheer
30 minutes, snapping awake and looking at the clock and going, okay, I got
John Gabris
another hour and a half last night. So I had a lot of wine, and I got back to the hotel, and I realized that I had to pack to get everything out of the hotel. Before I came here, I was clanking around in my underwear. I ended up packing silverware in the suitcase. There's like. And it was so loud and, like, clanky that the. It's like, oh, hey, shut up. From the wall next door. And I was like, oh, oh, sorry. Like, it was such a horrible scene.
Adam Pally
And sometimes you can't recover from those wine drunks. Like, the thing that I'm trying to do more. I have not. Not been drinking for a bit, but, like, not a bit. Just a little bit. Like. But I really try to pound water now a lot more if I'm drinking. Because that's what I'm realizing. I am like. I wake up and I'm like, I just need to. I need to have a lot of water in my system. And I'm like, then I'll be way better.
Paul Scheer
I'll throw a little. I'll throw a little drinking salts in
Adam Pally
my water if I'm gonna be hungover
Paul Scheer
the next day or that I know
Adam Pally
I'm gonna get after that IV or something. I.
Paul Scheer
With either one, whoever is our sponsor. Promo code.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Staying alive.
Adam Pally
By the way, I'll tell you this. I have a thing in my fridge.
John Gabris
Fridge.
Adam Pally
The. No promo code needed for this. Himalayan rock salt. You put some Himalayan rocks rock salt in a jar, and you put some water in there, and it just, like, it infuses the water. You take a teaspoon of that, put it into any bottled water you're drinking. Oh, that's awesome.
Paul Scheer
I use a brand called lmnt. It's like, element. That's how you say it. And it's pretty flavorful. Like salty watermelon water.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
I bring that in the sauna with me and I feel like electric.
John Gabris
I'm not doing any of that. I need to get it on my supplement game. I'm gonna. I take Metamucil.
Adam Pally
Ah.
John Gabris
That's like. I do four pills of Metamucin in the morning and four at night. And I.
Adam Pally
And you keep it good.
John Gabris
Super. I take the shit of life in the morning.
Adam Pally
Like, I have the things I knock wood that I've been blessed with, I think is I take very healthy number twos. I could take a good chip no matter what. I never had, like, those issues.
John Gabris
Right.
Adam Pally
You know, and I can sleep no problem.
John Gabris
Those are. I mean, that'll keep you alive.
Paul Scheer
My two big things is I'm like, I always drink enough water and I always get sleep. Like, those are my. The only two things I do right is that.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
And I. I believe in the power of sunlight. A lot of people will argue against it, but I'm also a big guy.
Adam Pally
No, I think, I think you have to get like. I. I think there's a difference between, like tanning and getting sunlight.
John Gabris
I don't know if we can tell the difference over here.
Paul Scheer
So I did. We did mention I'm an Italian from Long Island.

Paul, were you. Because we've known. We've all known each other almost 20 years. And is this new? Like, when. When we started the theater and we were doing all that. All that living? Yeah. Hard living. Like, were you. Did you always have an eye on. On the. On your wellness or like.
Adam Pally
No, not at all. I think that part of that is, like, culturally we are getting like, more aware. I think the Internet has opened up doors that maybe should be closed. Like. Right. Like, you know, but it's always like, when I was growing up, it was. My mom might have had a Jane Fonda tape, right. And Richard Simmons was on TV and deal a meal. Right. And exercise was equ. Like exercising was. Well, if you're overweight, you exercise.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Right. Or prescriptive.
Paul Scheer
Right.
Adam Pally
It's like. Or if you want to be like Arnold Schwarzenegger, then you exercise. Right. It wasn't like, we do this to supplement our lifestyle. Right. That was not like, my family was not sporty. Although my stepdad did play tennis.
Paul Scheer
But you now have.
John Gabris
I.
Adam Pally
Now I play. But he would never teach me. He was interesting, my stepdad.
Paul Scheer
Yeah. Well, I listened to the book.
Adam Pally
Oh, that's. That is.
Paul Scheer
That's like a weird. Like, I'm gonna beat you.
John Gabris
So I was just gonna ask, like, which.
Adam Pally
What. No, no.
John Gabris
What was the ball.
Paul Scheer
You're a little bald head.
Adam Pally
He just called the tennis is just hitting me with a racket. The. But like. Yeah. So it wasn't really. Then all of a sudden it was like, well, I guess I'm in New York City. I guess I should join a gym. I believe that joining ballets in New York City is what gave me athletes. I never got an athlete.
John Gabris
I was like, oh, you were gonna say confidence.
Adam Pally
Oh, no. I was like, oh, man. I was like, my foot. Like, I was like. I never had any, like, my fees. The Be great. And I was like this. Like, there was one gym that I'm like this. Whatever happened, happened in that valleys on the west side. I know it. And.
John Gabris
And I know that bally. Is that the one on 14th and.
Adam Pally
And this is up higher up on 50th.
John Gabris
Like, oh, I know that valley too. There was two Ballys in the city. There was that one on 14th and 6.
Adam Pally
Yes, I know that one.
John Gabris
That was like, huge. It was the biggest gym I've ever seen in my life. I think it's an urban outfit or something.
Adam Pally
Yeah, probably Makes sense. But, like, then I started dating June, and June was like a runner. June used to run all the time. And then she's like, you gotta run with me. That's not good.
John Gabris
Running is exercising with your partner.
Adam Pally
Well, exercising with my partner, I would do no problem. Running is like. That's like. Some bodies are built for running. I am not. My body is not built for running. It's just not like, I can run in games, but I can't do long distance running. And then June would, like, make me try to match her. I fucked up my body so much just by trying to, like, run in the streets with June. She would run for so long.
Paul Scheer
This is where you. This is where you know heterosexuality is a curse. You're like, yeah, I'll try whatever hobby you want. Hot girl.
John Gabris
Yeah.
Adam Pally
I was like, let's go.
John Gabris
I was like, sure, I love to run.
Adam Pally
She said, no, no, you could do it. You could do it. I've also now learned with June, like, when I could trust June's opinion on, like, certain things. But I was like, so. She gave me like, so. But that was, like, the beginning of it. And then we came out to la and then we started. Started going to. We had a trainer together. And that was actually really fun. Like, and it was like, fun to work out together. It was challenging. Oh, but the best. All right. So the first time I got into, like, working out was. Gosh, I don't remember how this came to be. There was this guy named Bogdan. Bogdan was Regis Philbin's exercise guru. They had a book together. He was like this little Romanian dude. He's like, hey, come on, reach. And I don't remember how I remember that.
John Gabris
Bogdan, exactly.
Adam Pally
He was like, oh, yeah. And I was like. And for whatever reason, I got into Bogdan's gym, which was like a floor of a building, not a gym. It was like medicine balls, sticks, and like, weird. It was like they were from a family that taught, like, Olympic judo. Like, that's where their background came from. Dude, first times I worked out there, I puked every single time. Like. And it was like, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what you have to do. And it was like, yeah. And it was like our exercise. My thing was like, you're running up four flights of stairs. You're running down four flights of stairs, you're running back up four flights of stairs. It's like medicine ball push ups. It's like. Or sit ups. It was old exercising, old exercise that made me like. I was like, I would Lay on the ground for 20 minutes after those workouts.
John Gabris
It's like, oh, my God, that feels.
Adam Pally
You know, it was like. It was awful. And. And that was like the first imp like, of, like, I gotta work out. And then it was almost like my body was telling me how out of shape I was. And. Yeah. And then it was like. But all those things I fel off on, like, the gym memberships, the crunches, all these. You go. And you're like, you have the best intentions. And then it was expensive. And the truth is, like, I think you have to, like, learn that stuff and figure it out and then figure out how to implement it. The best thing for me has been, like, we have a mirror, like the. The mirror app, where it's like, it trains you. It was a class in there. Yeah. And it's like. And I thought, great, you can show me how to do that, because that's what I need. It's like, our friend.
Paul Scheer
Mutual friend Matt Moses used to write for that.
Adam Pally
Oh, really?
John Gabris
He was writing for Tonal.
Paul Scheer
No, he. He did the mirror, then Tonal.
John Gabris
Oh, yeah.
Adam Pally
I heard tonal is great.
John Gabris
Tonal's great. I love it.
Adam Pally
And there's another one now.
John Gabris
It looks even the one that Terry Crews is selling.
Adam Pally
Yes.
John Gabris
Which looks even smaller.
Adam Pally
That's what I liked. And I said to June, I was like, we should get that. And she said, we're not having another exercise machine in our house.
John Gabris
But.
Adam Pally
But I love all that, like, in that. And that became, like, something that I'm like, oh, I can do this at home. And then the. Another, like, the next biggest fitness journey that I did was on Black Monday, season two.
John Gabris
You had to get thin.
Adam Pally
I had to get thin. I had to get thin. Like, I had to. That's the dream. Yeah.
Paul Scheer
Because it's like the carrot. If the carrot is work and money, and you got thin. Rollerblading.
Adam Pally
And that was it. Yeah. And that was it. Because, well, the thing was this. I was like, I want, like. And it was so I was under your impression. I was like, oh, yeah, they're gonna pay for me to get, like, thinner. No, no, they don't care. They were like.
Paul Scheer
They just say, you better show up.
Adam Pally
Yeah. They're like, just rollerblade. We just want to be funny and rollerblading. I was like, no, but if I'm rollerblading every day, like, like, I'm gonna do it. And so I was a little bit out of shape, and I was. Intermittent fasting. I was taking rollerblading or roller skating lessons. It was Actually roller skating, it was not even rollerblading. And it's like holding this woman's hands in Burbank, as we are, like, going over things as I'm trying to learn how to stop. And that was really fun for me. Cause I was like, oh, I have to be shirtless on tv. And I'm never taking off my shirt on tv. So I was like, I wanted to look good, and that was like. And then I felt like once I got to that part of my, like, fitness, I'm being able to maintain roughly. I go off and on. But tennis has really been able to kind of even out. Because I'm moving, I'm having fun. It doesn't feel like I'm working out, but I think I'm doing the core principles of what a workout is.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, you're getting movement, you're squatting.
John Gabris
What do we learn? Squat, pull, push, push, push, pull, squat.
Paul Scheer
It's for resistance training.
John Gabris
Right?
Paul Scheer
But like, that, what you're doing, like, whatever is working for you, whatever you're making time for, or it makes you happy. Like our guest Ryan Stanger said the other day. He's like, if you hate it, you're never gonna keep doing it.
Adam Pally
It's like, you don't need to, like, it's like, find the thing. It's like, the whole idea, I think working out or. Or staying healthy is just activating your body. It's like. And it's like, if it's yoga, like, no one's gonna say, well, yoga is not technically doing, like, as much as, like, you know, maybe like a core class or, like, it's like, everything is different.
John Gabris
And those hot yoga class, I used to do Beaches. My dad was, like, super into bikram after the documentary and. But 90 minutes, super hot. It doesn't matter what you're doing.
Adam Pally
I think it's like. It's just. I think everything is about balance. And I think especially when you think about, you know, health, it's like, it's also balance of, like, mental health, physical health, and then, like, personal health. Like, regardless of what your job is, it's like, you can't have all your eggs in your job basket either, because it's like, that will fuck you over. It will just fuck you over. And it's like, you have to be happy with your friends, your family, with what you do, because you were not. We are not given tomorrow. We only have today. It's like. And we can.
John Gabris
What's in therapy Regimen. You in therapy?
Adam Pally
I am in therapy. I go to Therapy once a week.
John Gabris
Once a week. You and June going together?
Adam Pally
We have gone together and I think it's good. I don't mind it. It's just like I say to June, I was like, I don't want to do therapy twice a week.
John Gabris
It's fatiguing.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
My wife and I talk about this all the time. Therapy is so hard because you dread, you dread when you're really doing it. When you're working through something. You dread going because you have to do it. Then you get there, there and, and it's heart wrenching.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
John Gabris
Then you're exhausted after. For two hours.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabris
And you're dealing with the, with the, yeah. The after, the after effects of it. And it takes so long for that after, for those after effects to just bleed into the day.
Adam Pally
100 like it can really like ups. And then like, like did we just get into a fight? But you didn't get into a fight. But you actually just got to an emotional place that, that feels like. But then I'm also like, I'm always a person where I'm like at 4aminute 40 is where I'm like, oh, now we got something like, oh, we got to wrap up in 10 minutes. I'm like, I'm so pissed. I'm like, like, I got to get into it. I like. And then it's like. But then if you come too prepared, like I want to talk about this. It's like, well then you've been holding
Paul Scheer
on to that for five days or whatever. You're like, remember Monday, that fight we had?
John Gabris
Yeah.
Paul Scheer
It's crazy. Speaking of 10 minutes, wrapping it up.
Adam Pally
Okay.
Paul Scheer
You, you got to get, get your son and get on Phoenix.
Adam Pally
I'm going to go to Phoenix with my son. My son and I, we get to go. We, we get to go. We try to go to a basketball stadium every year to a different place we're going to go. I was hoping Jimmy Butler was going to be there, but not, not happening.
John Gabris
No. You're going to get a really pissed off Kevin Durant.
Paul Scheer
We appreciate you making the time to come on.
Adam Pally
I love it. This is a good, a good service you're doing. Everyone's trying. I feel like we all need to get these tips that's just, we're just
John Gabris
trying to, we're, we're make it to tomorrow.
Paul Scheer
This is very self serving for us to just bring on peers and experts and talk to them and learn from them and hopefully the listeners and the viewers are, are picking up some of this.
Adam Pally
Well, the one and the one thing I should tell you that I am doing and I. I didn't bring this up earlier, is I looping my urine. So we're big on.
John Gabris
We're big urine loop.
Paul Scheer
By the way, that the guy that you and Hul covered on the Dark Web, the action boys were obsessed with him. Oh, yeah, we're obsessed with that guy. Everything he pitches is bananas. He's like one of those dudes who had one right idea like eight years ago, and then it's just pushing it. And this is a guy who drinks his own piss. Then when he p it out, he drinks it again.
Adam Pally
And he said that it cured his friend's testicular cancer. Was cured in three weeks. Uran looping.
Paul Scheer
Yeah.
John Gabris
Dry land is a myth.
Adam Pally
Thank you so much. It's so fun.
John Gabris
Pulse here's the best.
Paul Scheer
We weren't lying. I'm inspired. That was inspirational.
John Gabris
Yeah, it. And again, like, I just like being around that dude. He, like, makes me feel like I can do anything.
Paul Scheer
And we are lucky enough to have friends that are willing to guest on this podcast that hasn't aired yet. They don't know if anyone's going to watch it or listen to it. He's super busy. He's flying with his kid to go see a basketball game today and squeezed in time with us. That's a fucking good match.
John Gabris
Yeah, he's a man.
Paul Scheer
Probably has 60 other jobs. He has to. He probably has to watch four movies on an iPad this weekend for all of his
John Gabris
laundry's on vibe answers. Gotta watch all those movies.
Paul Scheer
Yeah. But yeah, between unspooled and how did this get made? He does have to watch two movies a week no matter what.
John Gabris
So you gotta pay attention. You need that ADHD medicine.
Paul Scheer
You need to be multitasking.
John Gabris
But what an amazing, amazing conversation. Go buy his book.
Paul Scheer
Yeah, his book is awesome. If you're a fan of audiobooks, Paul reads it and you know, he's funny and charming.
John Gabris
Yeah. Download that.
Adam Pally
Yeah, you can get that on Audible.
John Gabris
Yeah, I believe is where I'm listening to. To it. Thank you guys so much for listening and we will see you next time.

In this special "Reload" episode, Jon Gabrus and Adam Pally welcome comedian, actor, and all-around wellness enthusiast Paul Scheer. The show is an extended "director’s cut" of one of their favorite earlier episodes, featuring material that was previously cut for time. The trio dig into their journeys of trying to live healthier lives after years of "treating their bodies terribly," with Scheer sharing honest and humorous takes on fitness, mental health, parenting, and wellness trends — especially the cold plunge craze.
On Cold Plunges:
"It’s like you’re training your mind: I can do hard things. Every day, if you start off going, ‘I can do a hard thing,’ the day becomes easy."
-- Paul Scheer (28:50)
On Wellness Trends:
"If it came out that the cold plunge is completely placebo…I’d still do it for how I feel after. I think it’s my meditation, maybe."
-- Paul Scheer (31:47)
On Parenting and Reality Checks:
"The probability of [your kid making pro sports]…is almost zero. Exactly."
-- Paul Scheer (15:59)
On ADHD:
"I felt like I was a building that was in perennial scaffolding…"
-- Paul Scheer (40:49)
On Water as a Kid:
"Did you guys drink water when you were a kid?"
"No." – Pally & Gabrus (46:12)
On Fitness Consistency:
"If you hate it, you’re never gonna keep doing it."
-- Recalling advice from their guest Ryan Stanger (66:16)
True to the show's ethos, the conversation is raw, funny, and grossly forthcoming — with a lot of warmth and self-awareness. The hosts and Scheer gently roast each other, open up about their struggles, successes, and evolving relationships with health, wellness, and parenting. The cold plunge deep dive stands out, but the overall takeaway is one of balance, humility, and humor in the endless search for staying alive and (mostly) well.
Paul Scheer’s book is recommended for those looking to go deeper into his personal story and wellness journey.
For anyone considering a new health trend, fitness routine, or just looking for real talk on "staying alive" as a parent and human, this episode offers laughs, relatable stories, tested tips, and camaraderie in the struggle.
