On this episode of Staying Alive, hosts Jon Gabrus and Adam Pally received an unexpected treat when their friend, Hacks co-creator and co-star Paul W Downs, came by to do their podcast ON THE DAY THE HACKS FINALE AIRED. Paul was quite reasonably in his feelings that day, and the fellas really want to ask about putting five years of a successful TV show to bed, getting over his addiction to Mochalatta Chills, getting in shape to play a trainer on TV, and they all agree that the placebo effect is absolutely fine. Plus: we learn the three people who email Pally every birthday, and we stumble across Gabrus’ perfect job. Smart.
John Gabrus
Less medium. We were trying to unpack when your finale was. We're like, oh, it's tonight. I can't believe he's doing this for us. I cannot believe you're here.
Paul W. Downs
It's like, it's good to be busy today, but it's crazy to be here. I'm really raw. I'm. I'm like, I'm dizzy. I actually feel dizzy today.
Adam Pally
Whoa.
Paul W. Downs
I'm the least. I'm the least emo of everybody.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
But I've been. I have like vertigo this morning. And I'm like, is it because of this?
Adam Pally
Well, as someone who has. I think you're in the right company because I've lost many a TV show.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
And not necessarily in the fifth season.
Adam Pally
Not somewhere in the third. Somewhere in the second. A lot. A lot more in the first. Well, seems to be the new pattern. But. Did not realize when. When our buddy said he was going to come on the show that this
John Gabrus
would be the day of the finale of his. Of season five of his life's work.
Adam Pally
Of his opus.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
You know, of his.
John Gabrus
True. Our guest is about to come in. We were talking like, oh, when's the finale of Hacks? And Devin pointed out that it is tonight. And so on the day of the series finale of his big project that's. Everyone's talking about super successful. He's stopping by to do Staying alive.
Adam Pally
I know.
John Gabrus
And it's a real testament to how cool Paul is.
Adam Pally
Yeah. And our friendship. For sure.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
But I also feel that that had we, like, I almost feel bad that we didn't know.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
To say. But to say to him, like, you don't have to.
John Gabrus
Right. Because we could have done that.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Next month.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Yeah. You know what I mean? But like, neither of us thought about it.
John Gabrus
Well, I'm so happy to have it to. That he made this choice. Now we get to have Paul on our. Talking about Hacks.
Adam Pally
On the day.
John Gabrus
Yeah. On the day.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Well, just about the coolest guy. Funniest guy.
John Gabrus
Buff, handsome boy.
Adam Pally
Got it all, man. Yeah, he's got it all.
John Gabrus
You'll see.
Adam Pally
That was cool. You climbed the mountaintop like you. You. You did the funniest show on television.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, that's so nice.
Adam Pally
For five years.
Paul W. Downs
Thanks.
Adam Pally
Unheard of. And no matter what you do, it's
John Gabrus
like you did it not make a funny show. But I really care how it ends. Do you know that's so rare with. Where you actually give a fudge how it ends.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
But I. Every. Every episode. The last three have felt like finales to me.
Paul W. Downs
People thought last week was the finale. Everybody did.
John Gabrus
They were like, I was afraid.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
I was, like, crazy. Not show her. Do msg. That's cool.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Wait a minute. That does feel like a weird ending to the show.
Paul W. Downs
I don't know why everybody thought maybe the SC at the end. I don't know. Something made it feel like that.
John Gabrus
It had a good ending.
Adam Pally
It had a good third act, as most of the episodes do.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
You know, and seasons do.
John Gabrus
But the thing that got me was I saw randomly, someone post, maybe even you, was like, the finale is great. Try to watch. Oh, Travis, probably Travis over there. He was like. He was like, watch it before it gets spoiled for you. And I was like, I watched it five days ago. I was like, wait, there's another one. I was like, oh, yeah, Yeah. I was so giddy.
Paul W. Downs
Good, good, good. Well, it's. There are spoilers in this. Are you.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Are you. How are you dealing with the ending? Like, me, I would deal with it the way I deal with every day, which is I would be drinking.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. I haven't. I haven't drank in, like, two months.
Adam Pally
Oh, I know.
John Gabrus
Good for you.
Paul W. Downs
I know. I have to kind of go cold turkey on that, you know, and is that what.
John Gabrus
What brought you cold turkey, hot turkey,
Paul W. Downs
or I go hot turkey? Yeah, hot turkey. I'm hot turkey.
John Gabrus
It's all open face. Thanksgiving sandwich.
Paul W. Downs
Well, I find also when I don't do it for a while, I. I don't crave it.
Adam Pally
Right.
Paul W. Downs
You know, like when I'm drinking, I'm like, I need a glass of wine bad at lunch. I'm like, I need it at lunch.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
You know what I mean? I'm like, the guy that should be like, sorry, guys, I'm getting a glass of wine.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
You know, you, like, make the executives go, like, I guess we're getting drinks.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, some of them do, and some of them don't.
Adam Pally
I used to be that guy. And then I started to be like, maybe I am. Maybe. Maybe I am, like, turning people off.
Paul W. Downs
Yes. Yeah. Yeah.
John Gabrus
You know, do you ever see, like, you're the person who sets it off, and then, like, the younger people that are at the meeting are like, oh, sick. Not everyone. Just the guy who we're gonna tease for two weeks and not ire at all.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Mostly it's people don't do it, and then I'm the only one drinking. I'm like, well, all right. But when I don't do it, I don't want to do it two months.
Adam Pally
What brought that on?
Paul W. Downs
Honestly. Honestly wanting to look better, you know? Hell yeah, I look better when I don't drink.
John Gabrus
You're on the right show.
Adam Pally
You are the youngest looking 29 year old I've ever met.
Paul W. Downs
Thank you so much. I gotta stay looking.
John Gabrus
I've known you for like 15, 20 years.
Adam Pally
I've known you for 20 years. I mean, I met you when you were eight.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I know, I know.
John Gabrus
I true prodigy around the comedy. I love doing creepy one.
Adam Pally
The least you said. You said he's the least creepy one.
Paul W. Downs
Least creepy one. We had to dress up, we did sketches. It was great. It was like comedy boot camp.
Adam Pally
I learned everything. I know my baby voice was a problem.
John Gabrus
And the different voice you used to
Adam Pally
teach that I taught in. And the coding, like teaching you how to code switch was not. That was.
Paul W. Downs
It didn't age well.
Adam Pally
It didn't age well. But at the time, at the time it was good. Great.
Paul W. Downs
Really good.
Capital One Announcer
Really good.
John Gabrus
So are you not drinking in the lead up to this show? Cuz you're looking, you're. And they let, they let, they let Jimmy be sexy, which is, you know.
Paul W. Downs
Well, finally they let me, you know, finally you're shredded.
John Gabrus
Cute.
Paul W. Downs
I don't, I don't remember who pitched that. I literally don't pitch. I'm not kidding. I'm not kidding.
Adam Pally
You did not pitch that.
John Gabrus
You're doing a plank in the writers room going, like, if anyone has any idea.
Adam Pally
Sending a pic. You didn't send a pic.
John Gabrus
No, I became, I became.
Adam Pally
That one's so crazy.
Paul W. Downs
You want, you want to change the dynamic of the show?
Adam Pally
We'll do this.
Paul W. Downs
No, in fact, I, for a long time was like, I don't want it to seem like as the showrunner, I was like, we have to do this.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Should we not do it? I was like full to the, to the week of shooting. I was like, should we. You know what I mean? Like, I was like, let's not, I mean, be nude.
Adam Pally
But there is. Yeah, yeah.
John Gabrus
You don't want to go like full Jon Favreau where you're like casting Sophia as your love triangle.
Adam Pally
I mean, there's. That's always, you know, like, I remember when we were casting Throwback, there was like a couple times where I would suggest someone and the casting executives at NBC would like, snicker or laugh a little bit and it's like, oh, right. Like I'm Kevin James, I think.
Paul W. Downs
No, no, no, no, no.
Adam Pally
But do you know what I mean? And they'd be like, ha. You know? And you're like, whoa, all right.
John Gabrus
I think the most humiliated I could be is if I pitched a sitcom. Someone said, who do you want to play your wife? And they. I put out, there'd be like, hannah Waddingham.
Adam Pally
My list was, like, wild, you know, but it was like, alona Mars is
Paul W. Downs
not even an actress. She's a rugby player.
Adam Pally
No.
Paul W. Downs
Hey, truth is stranger than fiction. Look at. Look at real life.
Adam Pally
I know.
Paul W. Downs
Look at real life. Some of these women, I don't know, but I take your word for it. Some of them are dating men that are not in the same stratosphere. So guess what? I think it's shoot for the start. Hey, I was married to Scarlet in a movie.
John Gabrus
Oh, right.
Paul W. Downs
We did. We did write toward.
Adam Pally
Wasn't yours.
John Gabrus
It was the bit. A little bit.
Paul W. Downs
She's a twerk. I was gonna say, like, did they
Adam Pally
mention it in that movie?
Paul W. Downs
We did. We did.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
We justified hard.
John Gabrus
Best looking friend.
Adam Pally
I know.
John Gabrus
He's gotta have a disclaimer.
Adam Pally
I'm cooked.
John Gabrus
And what about me? What did I call myself today? Too much Sugar Ray.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God.

Adam Pally
So you're not drinking? That must make it really tough. I mean, you must be, like, raw. You must be feeling everything.
Paul W. Downs
I'm very raw.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Adam Pally
So are you eating? Are you?
Paul W. Downs
I cried in public the other night. Well, we did, like, a panel, and I couldn't.
Adam Pally
Where did I see you the other night?
Paul W. Downs
At Kate's.
Adam Pally
You.
Paul W. Downs
You performed at Kate? Yes.
Adam Pally
Yeah. So sorry.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, that was fun. Sorry. I'm gonna turn this on. I'm expecting a call. I need to take. Guys, I have to take it. I can keep it in the pod. It's fine.
John Gabrus
It's fine.
Adam Pally
Here's this.
Paul W. Downs
You could.
Adam Pally
That's the smallest Bluetooth I've ever seen.
Paul W. Downs
What?
Adam Pally
How are you hearing it? Oh, you're not? I thought you were talking.
Paul W. Downs
Hello.
John Gabrus
What do you mean? You can't extend it very small, but
Paul W. Downs
it also does my phone.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Really good. It's really good. They're getting better.
Adam Pally
Hearing aid.
Paul W. Downs
Really?
Adam Pally
Yes. My age, like, my best friend. Yes. That we both.
Paul W. Downs
That's. My baby monitor is on. Can you believe this? How about that, guys?
Adam Pally
Your baby monitor is on.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Right now.
Paul W. Downs
My nan. It's like always on.
John Gabrus
And your baby's on a conference call with uta.
Paul W. Downs
Yes, exactly. He's, you know, well, he's writing for the show now, so he keeps. He does have two jokes.
Adam Pally
He keeps pitching shirtless scenes.
John Gabrus
He's like, shirtless, pop up, please.
Adam Pally
Body.
Paul W. Downs
Dada, you're gorgeous. She does always say, isn't Dada so cute? And he's like, dada so cute. And I'm like, don't do this. This is cra. This is trauma. You can't. You can't make our child say that. I'm huge. It's crazy.
John Gabrus
Cut to, like, your kid is like 12. You're like, dad, that's so cute. Right? I have to go.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Oh, he's gonna be in a lot of therapy.
Adam Pally
I mean, I. I definitely do call my kids sometimes. I'm like, do I look okay?
Paul W. Downs
Do you? That's good. That's good. Yeah.
Adam Pally
The feedback is so harsh.
Paul W. Downs
Really?
Adam Pally
Oh, my God. My kids are like, especially. My 14 year old is like, very into fashion.
Paul W. Downs
Well. And so runs in the family.
Adam Pally
Yes. But. But he's like, young, and so it's still like, you know what I mean? Like, I like, see something I like, through my Instagram or whatever.
Paul W. Downs
Right.
Adam Pally
That's cool. I have no. Want to seek it out anymore.
Paul W. Downs
Sure.
Adam Pally
He's like, you know, wearing shoes would have like, like things like.
Paul W. Downs
Really? Oh, really?
Adam Pally
Yeah, no, he's got like tabbies or. Tabbies. Yeah, he's like, super cool.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And the other. The other day I was going to a party and I was like, wearing black jeans and a. Like a. The sailor shirt that I have and a blazer. And I was like, how's this? And he's like, I feel like you look too young for how old you are.
Paul W. Downs
No.
Adam Pally
And I was like. And it was such like a kid thing to know. Yeah.
John Gabrus
That's like, that. That would undo all of us. That's like an entire part of our industry.
Adam Pally
But the way he said it. The way he said it too. He's like, you look too young for how old you are. I was like, oh, my God. And he's like, what? I mean, you want to show up at this party, was gonna be like a bunch of people and. And you want to, like, stick out because of the thing you're wearing. And I was like, oh, my God.
John Gabrus
I mean, I read you.
Paul W. Downs
This is Crazy.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
I got an earring.
Paul W. Downs
This is good, though.
Capital One Announcer
It is.
Adam Pally
Well, it is nice to have that. And we all will. If you are. If you are a parent.
Paul W. Downs
I am.
Adam Pally
There will be a day where you get, like, your insides read aloud to you, you know, in a casual way that will put you down and he'll just go on with his day, you know, he was like, oh, yeah. He was like, all right, see ya.
John Gabrus
FaceTime over.
Adam Pally
And I was sitting in the hotel
Paul W. Downs
room like, you're too old for that. That's crazy.
Adam Pally
So. So are you eating? Is there. Are you cheating? In what am I. Are you cheating?
Paul W. Downs
Anyway, this is what I've been doing. I've been doing keto, which I know is like, old school, I guess. Is it something I've been doing keto, like two amazing.
Adam Pally
Like, what kind of keto are we talking? Because there's like, all.
Paul W. Downs
Dirty keto.
Adam Pally
Dirty, dirty, dirty keto with a twist.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, with a twist. Dirty keto. Yeah. Yeah. I do eat olives. Olives are keto friendly.
Adam Pally
All right.
Paul W. Downs
No, I've been eating like, I ate more red meat than I've ever eaten this the past six months, honestly. And guess what? My cholesterol is. Went up 150.
Adam Pally
Oh, God.
Paul W. Downs
I was at like 50. I was at like 77. Now it's like 243. Something. My LDL. Yeah, it's really. My doctor was like, this is. Is an emergency. He was like, we have to test your blood again in three months. I just had a physical because I've been doing it for a while, and it's the best because you eat cheese, you eat fat. I. I've already. I already do heavy cream in my coffee. I've always done that.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I was really the first thing I cut when.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, wow.
Adam Pally
I wasn't a heavy cream guy. I was like a. Even like a milk or. Or non fat milk skim milk guy. But as soon as I was like, oh, I have to lose weight, I was just. Black coffee.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I can't do it.
Adam Pally
Black coffee.
Paul W. Downs
I really can't.
John Gabrus
Sugar out of my coffee like, 15 years ago. And now I'm just like, I'm. I'm always trying the newest boot. Like, I live in West Hollywood and I just get to choose the bougiest plant milk I can find every time. And now I'm on unsweetened vanilla flax milk that I like. But for a while, I was on Honestly, Dashio.
Adam Pally
That sounds like delicious dog. It is unsweetened vanilla flat. Wow. What's the vanilla. What is vanilla?
Paul W. Downs
Sweet.
John Gabrus
Yeah. But it doesn't have any, like, added sugar. You get. It's called unsweetened vanilla, but it has a hint of it. And I just need my coffee to be slightly diluted.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
You know what I mean?
John Gabrus
It's more about that. Yeah. Then I get. I like it watery. You like.
Adam Pally
I like my.
Paul W. Downs
You do.
Adam Pally
To have the consistency of tea.
Paul W. Downs
That's very New York, I think.
Adam Pally
I think so, too.
Paul W. Downs
That's like bodega coffee.
Adam Pally
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul W. Downs
I need it to be like espresso, like, black, dark black. But I need cream. I. My evolution.
Adam Pally
When you're in Italy, you don't do. You don't do, like, the espresso.
Paul W. Downs
I do. I do when I'm in Italy.
John Gabrus
Although that's, for me, that's toxic masculinity. I drink. If everyone around me orders black coffee, I don't change. Yeah. Black coffee. Like, I'm like, yeah, I'll do an espresso.
Adam Pally
I don't stick out.
John Gabrus
Yeah. No. I would never order a cappuccino.
Paul W. Downs
That's right. You got part of the team. I'm part of the community.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
I find coffee for me is that, like, I only drink iced coffee. But if I'm somewhere and someone's like, we made a pot of coffee, I'll be like, yes. The idea of the communal pot of coffee, I'll. I'll enjoy drinking, you know?
Paul W. Downs
Or like, I'm much more hot. I always want hot. Even in the summer. I'm like, I want a hot coffee, especially in the morning.
Adam Pally
An iced coffee doesn't do it for me. My wife lives on iced coffee.
Paul W. Downs
So many people do.
Adam Pally
My wife was like, that.
John Gabrus
I.
Adam Pally
Sometimes I'm like, did you eat anything today? Or just have 10 giant iced coffees?
Paul W. Downs
Like, yeah.
Adam Pally
You know, and. And I. I can't even sip it. It's like, there's something. But if it's the same thing in a hot cup, I'll drink the whole thing.
Paul W. Downs
I know. It's like. It's the. You know, the ritual, the morning, the thing. Yeah. But my evolution has been crazy because I was addicted to mocha Lotta chills from Cinnabon. I had one every day from seventh grade till I graduated college. Not a joke.
John Gabrus
That's a very.
Paul W. Downs
They're like 1400 calories.
John Gabrus
They are very specific place to get, like. I know they're not as ubiquitous as Starbucks.
Adam Pally
I never remember you. I never remember you with any sort of. Of mocha.
Paul W. Downs
Really?
Adam Pally
Chin of fat on you.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, well, oh, well. It was like cocaine. I was like, you know, and when you have that, you don't need to really eat much because you're running around. You're crazy. Yeah, I would get them at Penn Station. I would get it at Penn Station before ucb and when I was in college, there was only one at the airport. So I'd pick people up and buy, like, five in a carrier, put them in my fridge. They would get thick. They would get, like, thick and hard. Really disgusting. But when I was in high school, I. I drove past the Cinnabon on my way to school. So I would go in every day on the way home.
John Gabrus
Oh, my goodness.
Paul W. Downs
So then I went from that to coffee with tons of sugar and cream. Then I cut it down to, like, one Splenda. Then I took that out. Now I have less. I'm gradually moving toward black, but I can't do black.
John Gabrus
That's like the natural maturation, right? Like, that's just growing up.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
I guess when you're a kid, you're like, I can't believe my mom drinks coffee every day. It stinks. And then you find you get coffee, you're like, I can't live without this.
Adam Pally
You know?
John Gabrus
And then you meet some old. And like, once you're like, oh, I just know this old Italian guy who smashes down two espressos, and you're like, that sounds great. Then the second you become that, you're like, I am now the old Italian I do. You make your coffee at home?
Paul W. Downs
I do.
John Gabrus
That is the biggest jump from when I moved from New York to la. I was like, I used to just take my dog out and go to the bodega and get a coffee every morning, and it was, like, six doors down. Now in la, I'm like, I just need. I. I want it before I could even reasonably get to it. So, like, yeah, I'm standing in, like, crust in my eyes, piss in my bladder, trying to whip up.
Paul W. Downs
Wow.
Adam Pally
Wow.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Crossed in my eyes.
John Gabrus
Sorry, I have that wrong. Piss in my eyes, crossed on my dick.
Adam Pally
I didn't say dick the first time.
John Gabrus
Yeah, well, now I'm remembering how I really went.
Paul W. Downs
Right, right, right, right, right, right. Yeah, that's good.
John Gabrus
Time to change the bed.
Paul W. Downs
You're still getting crust on your dick. You know, you're going. Doing good. That's good, that's good, that's good.
John Gabrus
So, Paul, we really only ask our guests one question on this podcast, and we'll just get to it now.
Paul W. Downs
Let's do it.
John Gabrus
What are you Doing to stay alive.
Paul W. Downs
Wow.
John Gabrus
You've been fit as long as I've not. And not fit, like, oh, you know who's like, you? A person who pursues fitness.
Paul W. Downs
I do pursue it. Yeah. I do pursue it. Well, you know, and I pursued it for a few different reasons in life. One of them was because I played a trainer on tv, and so I got really into working out then because I was like, I got a kind. Yes. When I was on Broad City, I was like, I kind of got to look a little bit like, I'm in shape, because I hadn't really lifted weights or done anything since I was in high school.
Adam Pally
Did the casting come first or did the. Because, again, like, I remember you as always in shape.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Like, were they like you. Were they like, you're in shape, or were you just the most in shape of a group of people that were completely Slavic?
John Gabrus
Yeah. Being in shape for sketch comedians is like, it was. I was like, being in shape for tv.
Paul W. Downs
You know what? I was a swimmer. I was like, no one does butterfly. I'm going to do butterfly. That's going to be my stroke, you know? And so I was like, how can I differentiate myself from all the comedians in these hoodies? I know.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Hex.
Adam Pally
No, no, I mean, because, yeah, I
John Gabrus
already have giant blue eyes. What can I try next?
Adam Pally
So they, they put you, they, they put you as a trainer, and you're like, I gotta look the part. And then it's also like, wow, I'm getting addicted to looking good.
Paul W. Downs
Yes. Although I guess I've always had what's, what do they call it? Orthorexia, when you, like, are addicted to eating healthily. Oh, wow. Yeah. I think it's called you're orthorexic. I, I. And I was that not a joke After I basically stopped drinking mocha. Lotta chills. Because a friend of mine's dad was a cardiologist, and she was like, so my dad says you're gonna have diabetes. And I was like, what? She was like, the amount of, like, blood sugar you probably have is crazy because I had them every day. I'm not even kidding. This girl that I went to school with. And so I was. That kind of freaked me out. And then When I turned 24, 25, they started. I started getting, like, heavier. I was like, oh, my metabolism is changing. And that, like, freaked me out because I had always, I, you know, I was a swimmer. And then I, I don't know. I had always been an ectomorph. I had always, like, you Know, I had. I didn't really need to work out.
John Gabrus
Right.
Paul W. Downs
So that freaked me out. So then I started working out a little bit. And then when I was a trainer, I was like, well, I'll work out a lot.
Adam Pally
Right.
Paul W. Downs
And then it's different times in my life when I'm like becoming a little bit ocd. Like, like now with the show ending, I'm like, what can I control?
Adam Pally
That's what I was thinking.
Paul W. Downs
My body. So I'm not drinking, I'm working out a lot. You know what I mean?
Adam Pally
That makes a lot of sense.
Paul W. Downs
I think this final season was a lot about control.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
You know, interesting.
Adam Pally
I mean, you got to grab it somewhere in your life. It's. It's really hard to. I try to not control it. Like, I really try to float through.
Paul W. Downs
Good for you.
Adam Pally
It's so hard. It's not because you're like, you find yourself doing it in ways that are like, not the ways where you're like, that's not control either, you know?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Yeah.
John Gabrus
Well, yeah. Like leaving a show that you're ostensibly in control of and now back into the world where nothing is in your hands. It's all in the stranger. Middle person, middleman kind of hands. Like, you're like, I need to grab hold of something. I had another follow up question. Like, when you do that for the Broad City trainer role, you're like, I better. One thing about resistance training is you notice results and then all of a sudden you're like, I think in our industry you can frequently do a lot of stuff without seeing any, like, any kind of feedback or any kind of results. And then when you're like, Whoa, I'm squatting 10 more pounds today than I did two weeks ago. I'm improving. No one's ever going like, Paul, your writing is getting funnier.
Paul W. Downs
Right.
John Gabrus
Gabriel, your improv is doing so much, you know, like, no one's ever, like, you're not really able to quantify it. Really. Nothing's quantifiable that we're doing. But all of a sudden, weights and you're seeing results in the mirror and you're feeling stronger and you're like, oh, shit. And that's that. To me, that's my version of the control of, like, there's progress happening.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Where nothing else I do feels like progress, everything else feels reactive so totally. It feels so good to be like, I do this again and I'm better at it than I was last month.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Like, that just doesn't. We don't get that feedback in a lot of place. Except for, like, I guess, your quote.
Paul W. Downs
Right, right, right.
Adam Pally
Well, yeah, but no one gets.
Capital One Announcer
Maybe.
Paul W. Downs
I know. No one gets a quote. Yeah, it's like, I'll wave my quote. You know what I mean? It's like, oh, my God.
John Gabrus
Excited to be here.
Adam Pally
I wave bye bye to my quote quote every time I get a new one.
Paul W. Downs
Of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's crazy. Yeah.
Adam Pally
I don't even have a quote anymore. I have like, hyphen.
John Gabrus
My quote is, I'll do it.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah, exactly. That's the only quote I'm in. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Adam Pally
So you're working out. What kind of workouts are you doing?
Paul W. Downs
So I do resistance training, I do weight training, and I do like one or two muscle groups when I work out.
John Gabrus
We call this bro split.
Adam Pally
You're on the bros.
Paul W. Downs
I'm on the bro split. Yeah, I'm on the bro split.
John Gabrus
And are you programming yourself or do
Paul W. Downs
you have a trainer? I work with a trainer, but also I work out on my own.
John Gabrus
Yeah, yeah.
Paul W. Downs
One thing I've like, learned is things are out of proportion. Like, things grow faster than other things.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
I never do biceps or triceps because if I'm doing chest or shoulders, they. They just. Yeah. The secondary. You know what I mean? The secondary muscle groups. So I never do those. Even though sometimes. Anyway, sometimes I'm like. I don't want to look like I'm just doing our glamour muscles, you know what I mean? Abs wise, I do leg lifts, I do full leg ups, which is sometimes you hold a thing and you put your legs up and then you slowly lower them. Yeah. Toes to bar.
Adam Pally
Okay. So that's lower abs. That's giving you that. The calm gutter.
Paul W. Downs
Trying to get the calm gutters deep. You know what I mean? I need them to, you know, because there's so much. Sometimes you just need somewhere to go, you know? I want to drown, so I need those.
Adam Pally
My gutters.
Capital One Announcer
The.
Adam Pally
The rain goes over the roof.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, yeah.
Adam Pally
They don't even get to the ranges.
Paul W. Downs
You gotta be careful. You can slip.
Adam Pally
I know. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Very careful. Yeah.
John Gabrus
It's so funny on my body to get like surgery to add cum gutters, but I still have like this huge belly in the middle. But I. Weird.
Adam Pally
I always had love handles. I feel like love. Like, even when I'm in the most shape I've ever been, it's like I catch myself from the back.
Paul W. Downs
I'm like, totally.
Adam Pally
Like, I'm just Homer Simpson.
Paul W. Downs
That was the only thing that defeated love. Handles for me was going keto because I started living on fat, and so it, like, burns your storage. That was the only thing that did that because I had that. You know, everyone has that.
John Gabrus
Abs are made in the kitchen. Yeah, I know. Out train, but I can't cook.
Adam Pally
Cook.
Paul W. Downs
Let him cook.
John Gabrus
No, actually, I can.
Paul W. Downs
I gotta order.
John Gabrus
I gotta order.
Paul W. Downs
Don't let him cook.
John Gabrus
Yeah, don't let him cook.
Adam Pally
Best order.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Capital One Announcer
Are you.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I'm a very good order.
Paul W. Downs
I bet you are.
Adam Pally
Yeah, Very. I know the menu up and down.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Adam Pally
I crushed it last night.
John Gabrus
Are you looking forward to your exercise? Like, what's your relationship with your exercise these days?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I do think it gives me energy and I do like to do it. And yet one of the reasons I work out with a trainer and I think even working out with a buddy is does this, like, it does make me accountable because I wouldn't do it.
John Gabrus
Right.
Paul W. Downs
You know what I mean? I'd be like, I'm gonna do 15 or 20 minutes maybe, and then maybe not.
Adam Pally
Are you a morning guy? Are you?
Paul W. Downs
No, no, I'm an owl, not a lark. Yeah, but I. Well, I do it in the morning because I have to. But I'm not a morning guy.
Adam Pally
Right.
Paul W. Downs
I do do it.
John Gabrus
This is my exact match. I cannot. I do not like waking up early. But if I don't do it in the morning, there's almost. It's immediately. Every hour I wait to do it, the percentage of it actually occurring goes down.
Adam Pally
Like, of course, yeah, I can get it in. Like, I've become accustomed to getting it in wherever, but I prefer if I'm up. It's like, I do it. Yeah, just do it. Just go for an hour. Just, like, get it over with, you know?
Paul W. Downs
Feel good when you do it.
John Gabrus
Yeah, you said the old man thing, too. Because we're not talking about how we look or like. Or how much we bench. It is the kind of like the old man thing of, like. Like. Well, honestly, I just feel better when I have. Yeah, You. When you're young, you're like, hear people talk about runners high and. And you're like this.
Paul W. Downs
I still don't get that. I gotta tell you, I actually don't get runner's high. I'm like, huh?
Adam Pally
I've tried.
John Gabrus
It's exercise.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I guess, sure.
Adam Pally
I've tried to get high every which way.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
John Gabrus
You're doing whippets on the treadmill every morning.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, that's fun.
Adam Pally
But I know that those are what's
John Gabrus
getting me high, Bro, have you tried this runner's eye? Dude, that's galaxy gas.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God.
Adam Pally
Yeah, no, I. I like to run, but never felt a runner's high. Like, I enjoy running. I like, like putting in miles.
Paul W. Downs
You do?
Adam Pally
Oh, yeah. I get, like, in a Zen space. I can, like, especially when it's nice out outside. Like, I can really dig in.
John Gabrus
And you might accidentally be describing runner's high, too. Yeah, you know, like, it might not. It might not hit for, like, people who do drugs might not feel. Yeah, I think runners. Yeah, I would say you have a high tolerance for getting high.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Yeah, right.
John Gabrus
Wait, this doesn't feel as good as when I do fucking dmt.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, no shit.
John Gabrus
It's still running.
Adam Pally
You know what?
Paul W. Downs
You're right.
Adam Pally
I'm killing the drug marathon.

Wow, you're still drinking soda?
Adam Pally
Yeah, it's Zevia Creamy Root Beer.
Capital One Announcer
Isn't soda full of sugar and bad food?
Adam Pally
Nah, Zevia doesn't have sugar or fake like other sodas.
Capital One Announcer
Okay, but does it taste like.
Adam Pally
Here, try one.
Capital One Announcer
Oh, this is delicious.
Adam Pally
Told ya. Zevia, it's soda made better.
John Gabrus
No?
Adam Pally
Find Zevia Creamy root beer, orange creamsicle, and more flavors at your local grocery store. You're on this press junket now?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Are you getting it in? Like, how do you. How does it change for you when you're like, in Vegas shooting or in Paris shooting? Like, are you. Are you one of those that's like, no matter what, I'm up and I'm doing it, or are you one of those. It's like, you know, we're in Paris, whatever.
Paul W. Downs
No, I'm trying to do it. I am trying to do it when I'm there. But it depends on the. It honestly depends on the hotel. Like, if there's a good gym, you
John Gabrus
know, it feels it's an ultimate victory if you get a lift or a jog in on vacation or on, like, even road gigs. Like you traveling. Like, we.
Capital One Announcer
We.
John Gabrus
You travel too much for work to be like, when I travel for work, I don't exercise. Like, that's just impossible if you're gone eight weeks out of the year or whatever. It's like. But when you do it, it does make you feel like you're a, like Navy SEAL or a monk or something where you're like, yeah, I know we're in Paris, but I did 100 push ups in the lobby or whatever, and
Adam Pally
they're like, sir, you have to stop working out in the lobby.
Paul W. Downs
They're very upset. Although you know what I've noticed?
Adam Pally
Do not disturb.
Paul W. Downs
The people in Europe are working out more than ever.
Adam Pally
Yes.
Paul W. Downs
I used to go and be like, no one runs. You know what I mean?
Adam Pally
If you go to Italy, run clubs in Paris, like, I've.
Paul W. Downs
People are working out all over the place. Everyone's great. It's crazy.
Adam Pally
Yeah. In, in, in.
John Gabrus
How do you run in black pants and a black leather jacket and a beret?
Paul W. Downs
I don't know. Yeah.
Adam Pally
And you can't. You can't communicate with them because you're like, excuse, I'm walking here.
John Gabrus
The amount of people, and they're like running with cigarettes.
Adam Pally
They're doing ropes, and a lot of them aren't even moving. They're just running a marathon.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, exactly. But you still burn.
Adam Pally
And they're shredded.
Paul W. Downs
You burn in place.
Adam Pally
Shredded mime.
Paul W. Downs
I've never. I've never seen a mime out of shape, have you?
John Gabrus
I've never seen a fat.
Adam Pally
You talk with your body.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. And the horizontal stripes wouldn't look good.
Capital One Announcer
No.
John Gabrus
Michelle Marcel told me when I tried to study with them.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, really?
John Gabrus
I'm sorry, but there are no fat mimes.
Paul W. Downs
You can do this. But we have a regiment.
John Gabrus
Also gamers. I've never seen you not talk for 30 seconds. Are you sure you want to be a mime?
Adam Pally
It is Monk like.
Paul W. Downs
But, yeah, I try and do it when I go. But, you know, I'm also like, it's probably 20% of what I actually would do, you know, But I've started to learn that, like, even if you do 20 minutes, I'm like, that's enough. Enough. Just give yourself a little bit of a.
John Gabrus
You know, this is the staying alive mantra. Something is better than nothing. Sure, get in your own. Especially if you're like, a person who likes to work out. You're like, well, I'm not gonna get a full hour to do back and body.
Paul W. Downs
Right. Right.
John Gabrus
What am I gonna do? I might as well just do nothing. And then you're like, you could easily do that for, like, eight days in a row and calcify.
Paul W. Downs
Totally. I think if you just do. You do lateral flies, guys. That's it. You just do that and then you're done and it's okay. Like, you're.
Adam Pally
You know, I don't even have lateral flies in my. In my rotation.
Paul W. Downs
You don't? No.
John Gabrus
You should do.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, they're like. They're like. Like my number one thing, really.
Adam Pally
I'm on squats.
Paul W. Downs
I hate doing legs. I do.
Adam Pally
I do them, but everybody says that, like, squats are the full body, like, sure thing. And I. You know, for someone who's in a hotel, it's like, I know I can get in those squats.
Paul W. Downs
Totally. Yes.
Adam Pally
Squats, Push ups. That's kind of where I'm at.
Paul W. Downs
You know, you see these people on Instagram who are like, all you need to do is these four things, and you're going to look like crazy like this. And it's, like, so insane. But I am like, well, do those four things.
John Gabrus
Every one of those people is lying. It's so.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. And they're online.
John Gabrus
All I do is do this breath. And you should never, never think that. Look at the app. I mean, I'm sure people know this, but you should never look at the efficacy of a workout based on the model's fitness level.
Paul W. Downs
I know, but it works on me so much, too.
John Gabrus
Well, if that guy with those huge traps does his shrugs like that, I might as well.
Paul W. Downs
I mean, have you ever had all I do for traps? You know what I mean?
Adam Pally
That's the thing.
Paul W. Downs
And it's like, really?
Adam Pally
Have you ever had an out of shape, like trainer or exercise class leader?
Paul W. Downs
No, I'll come to.
John Gabrus
I'll come to their defense.
Paul W. Downs
That's hard.
John Gabrus
There's an expression, a mechanic's car runs the worst.
Paul W. Downs
That's right.
John Gabrus
They're so focused.
Paul W. Downs
The cobbler's children have no shoes.
Capital One Announcer
Right.
Paul W. Downs
Or whatever. Yeah, sure. Yeah.
John Gabrus
But they're helping other bodies.
Paul W. Downs
Their body. They don't have time for them.
Adam Pally
This is an industry that doesn't feel like that.
John Gabrus
No, no.
Adam Pally
It feels like you would. But I have a billboard for your. Totally. Yeah. I have been at a few exercise classes where like, the person I'm with will be like. They didn't seem like they were in such great shape.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
That's. That's hard. Yeah. Really hard to be. It's like going and getting a facial from someone with really bad skin. You're like, huh?
Adam Pally
You're like, how does this.
Paul W. Downs
This is your business. What are you doing?
John Gabrus
Speaking of facial. Yeah. What. What are you doing outside of beauty wise pure lift? Because we. We're also into all, like. We're sauna people. I'm a cold plunge guy. We like love all that.
Paul W. Downs
I did do cold plunge for a while.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
I did it in the winter because we have. I don't have like a cold plunge, you know, And I don't go to a place for it. But when our pool was like 50 degrees, I would. I would get in for five minutes.
John Gabrus
Wow.
Paul W. Downs
And that was actually great. I thought that was great.
Adam Pally
Supposed to be amazing. I mean, there. We don't know if it's good or bad.
Paul W. Downs
We don't. Okay.
Adam Pally
We don't.
Paul W. Downs
All right. Good to know. You guys probably know more than me.
John Gabrus
Believe it or not.
Adam Pally
We've asked everybody.
Paul W. Downs
Really. We don't know.
Adam Pally
Okay.
John Gabrus
But I think even at. I'm at the stage in my life where even if it is psychosomatic, it's worth it to fix my psycho.
Paul W. Downs
Psychosomatic is. Is rocking. You know, Psychosomatic is very good placebo is real.
Adam Pally
A positive placebo effect. I'm in.
John Gabrus
Me too.
Capital One Announcer
Right?
Paul W. Downs
Me too.
Adam Pally
Yeah, of course. So you're cold plunging. Are you?
Paul W. Downs
I take nad.
Adam Pally
You're the. The second person this season to tell us about nad. That is a.
John Gabrus
Those are in an IV or. No, you sometimes.
Paul W. Downs
But it's in a syringe. Guys.
Adam Pally
Really.
Paul W. Downs
I know. Should I admit that? Am I gonna knock out health insurance?
Adam Pally
No.
Paul W. Downs
Are they gonna deny me? You know?
John Gabrus
Wait, I'm on. I'm on. Zepbound in a syringe.
Paul W. Downs
Okay.
John Gabrus
Shooting up.
Paul W. Downs
All right.
John Gabrus
I'm shooting up weekly.
Paul W. Downs
Okay.
Adam Pally
And that's how I take heroin.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Heroin high beats famously the best way.
Adam Pally
You make a lot of sense. It's like, as someone who's hooked on heroin, it's hard for me to expect to get the same pleasure.
Paul W. Downs
Your skin looks really good for being hooked on heroin.
Adam Pally
You look. Thank you. I just got a facial, I think, or I rub my face in a toilet. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Something.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Not sure, but it looks way worked.
Capital One Announcer
Thank you.
John Gabrus
I like. I like nad. These are the questions I really want to. Especially for people who live in la, because, like, that's the stuff that intrigues me. Like, all of a sudden, you hear from someone you're like, getting your blood. Like, Zoe told us she gets her blood lasered, and we were like, we got to know more about that.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Mr. Jones is having her blood pulled out, lasered, and then put back in. What? Yeah, it's like having a printer cartridge replaced or something. I don't know.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Well, she does look good.
Adam Pally
Like, how you gonna argue with that? So. But similarly, so.
Paul W. Downs
Yes.
Adam Pally
So are. Do you. Are you feeling benefit of a nad shot, like, right away? It's like a big part.
Paul W. Downs
I do feel a little bit of a jolt, but again, I don't know. Long. Although I'll tell you what, I am prescribed Adderall, which I don't really take. I take it as needed. And it's usually like, if I'm. If I'm in a place where I walk into a room and I'm like, why am I in the room? You know what I mean? Or I'm finding myself being really distracted in a way that it is impacting my day. I will take a little bit of it. And that happens, you know, especially when we're in production where you're over fatigued and all this other stuff, you're. You're driven to more distraction. So honestly, I take it very infrequently, even though I legitimately have adhd. But when I take nad, I find that I never. I'm never in a place where I'm like, why did I open the fridge? I'm not hungry. Why did I open this fridge? You know what I mean? I don't ever try this reach for that. I do think it's. I do think in terms of, like, brain fog, it is helpful.
Adam Pally
I gotta try because I have the most severe 80. I'm on Vyvanse, 40 milligrams every day.
John Gabrus
40.
Paul W. Downs
Damn.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
That is so wild.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Well, you seem so.
John Gabrus
And this is his energy. That means that.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
That's how hard that ADHD have you been for.
Paul W. Downs
For a long, long time?
Adam Pally
For the last like six, six, seven years.
Paul W. Downs
Okay. So as an adult, though.
Adam Pally
As an adult, yeah. But it's been an enormous change.
Paul W. Downs
Can I tell you guys will appreciate this.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
So dorky. When I was in college, I was diagnosed. I was prescribed Ritalin. I probably had the best GPA I've ever had that I was so good at school. But I thought. I felt like I wasn't as good in improv. I wasn't as. I wasn't getting off the back line and I was like, I think I'm not like, you know what I mean? Not able to follow the fun.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
So I stopped taking it until truly a couple years ago.
Adam Pally
Oh, my.
Paul W. Downs
But I was like, I can have bad grades. I need to be funny in the improv scene.
John Gabrus
Relatable. And I wonder how much I mean relatable to. You know, I wonder how much that is your perspective, too.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
I don't know if that was actually true.
John Gabrus
No one would have even noticed that you were. But, like, if you're not feeling it in that moment.
Paul W. Downs
I wasn't feeling.
Adam Pally
There was a more negative perspective back then on antidepressants and of course, yes, totally ADHD medicine. And it was like, there. There was. I heard that a lot more back then. Like, aren't you concerned it's going to, like, take the you out of you?
John Gabrus
Whatever.
Adam Pally
It's like, I don't. I think it's actually the opposite to you.
John Gabrus
I think it lets you be okay.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
For me. But I have it so severe that I. If I'm not taking it, there are times where I will be talking to you and have to stop. Stop while my mouth is moving and go, what were we talking?
Paul W. Downs
Totally. I. Me too. I. I so get that. I'm like, what would we say?
Adam Pally
Because I'm. My mind is going, like, in 50.
Paul W. Downs
I know.
Adam Pally
And that is, like, not good for anybody involved. You know, it's not good for me. It's not good for the person I'm talking to.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Like, the whole thing is bad. So I've noticed since I. For the last, like, you know, grip of years, however long I've been on it, I definitely am more present and there and, like, able to. To kind of do the thing I'm supposed to be doing.
Paul W. Downs
Right.
John Gabrus
Yeah. I don't understand the severity of ADHD and how it works. But I know that I can tell when you haven't been taking yours, you know, really like. And we're not like roommates, but we are constant collaborators and constantly talking. And I could tell that. Wow. Yeah. And I'd be like, okay. I think Adam, is everything okay? He's like, I've got to get my prescription sent to Florida. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Isn't it so crazy how it's hard also? Yeah.
Adam Pally
And so we were in production in Miami.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And especially in Florida. It was like really hard to get my, my meds. And we were coming not from New York or la, where. It's where I'm all Hollywood.
Paul W. Downs
Yes.
Adam Pally
You know, we're coming from Vale or something and couldn't get it. And the first two, three days of production, he was so frustrated with me.
John Gabrus
It was like, it was like having an off leash dog. Adam, really? Sit down. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Wow.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Wow.
John Gabrus
Every time we walked into the hotel we were staying at, he had to go to the front desk to get another room key. And I noticed it on like day three that he. And then one. I. I've told this story on the pod before. One day we just opened the car that. The Suburban that we were being driven around and opened the car and like a dozen room keys fell out and I was like, Adam, I found all
Paul W. Downs
of your room keys.
Adam Pally
Yeah, I know I can't, but I, I'm able to like have a chill demeanor. Yeah, kind of.
Paul W. Downs
You do. That's what, that's what I mean. It doesn't seem like you're on 40 milligrams because I take. Yeah, seven. I. I'm like prescribe 10, but I take like, I break off a little bit.
Adam Pally
Yeah, 40. I was at 30. This is a three. What?
Paul W. Downs
No, not three. 30.
Capital One Announcer
30.
Adam Pally
I was like, three. No, I was at 30.
John Gabrus
I went from three to four.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Capital One Announcer
Wow.
John Gabrus
I chose it on my.
Adam Pally
My doctor said it had to happen now. No.
John Gabrus
I started taking 123 milligram pills every morning.
Adam Pally
I was at 3, at 30 for a while and then went to shoot a movie in London for. For a while. And they were. The way that the American health system is just so up that they were like, we can't write you a three month prescription for your Vyvanse at 30 milligrams because you've been taking 30 milligrams for however long. So we can write you one for a new prescription. So you either have to go up or down. And my doctor, a while, my doctor and I were like, well, you can't go down Right. Because if you go down and then go into production on a movie.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
No, you're gonna be. See, you have to go up.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And so then I went up and it's been like a year.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Yeah.
Adam Pally
And I. I actually feel great. But it had. It happened because of like a. A weird insurance.
Paul W. Downs
That's so crazy.
Adam Pally
Yeah. It sucked.
John Gabrus
I never been diagnosed. I do feel like what I have is possibly something like adhd. But I do fantasize the idea of, like, I take it and all of a sudden I'm like jamming out screenplays
Adam Pally
and
John Gabrus
I'm like, oh my God, I can actually focus on something. It's like, no. Your constant weed smoking and distraction is foundational part of your brain. Unfortunately, that's not like a medical.
Adam Pally
Well.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
People. When. When everyone asks me, like, do you feel like you're not. Like you're not as funny or like, do you feel like that? I'm like, no, actually it feels like I know a little bit better myself because not everything's happening at once.
Paul W. Downs
Totally. Yeah.
Adam Pally
So it's like I'm able to cut through. Cut through a little bit better. Especially at work. Like.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Acting was. Was so hard. Wow. With the amount of ADHD I have.
Paul W. Downs
Wow.
Adam Pally
Because I. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
You gotta focus on your scene partner and like, listen and react.
Adam Pally
You gotta react. You gotta. And like.
John Gabrus
And all the listening outside of cameras rolling too. Of just.
Paul W. Downs
That's the thing. There is so much distraction, so much going on. It is actually hard. I mean, you know, I know, like sometimes people are like, oh, doing theater is so much harder. You know, but when you're on a soundstage or you're on set, there's. There's 50 people around. There's things happening. There are sounds happening.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
That aren't picked up by your mic.
Adam Pally
Theater. I think theater is harder in the. The repetition of it. Have you done it yet? Like real a play? It.
Paul W. Downs
I mean, not since college. No.
Adam Pally
You should do one.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I want to.
Adam Pally
You're.
Paul W. Downs
You're rich. That's what I. That's what I want to. You know what? We'll see. We'll see.
Adam Pally
Yeah, No, I thought that too.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. What do you mean?
Adam Pally
I did a play for six months and I was like, oh, I didn't make any money.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, sure, sure.
Adam Pally
Like this was a mistake.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
I feel charity. I feel fulfilled and broke. Yeah, no, no, it's just. It's the grind of it. Every day is. Is the challenge of it. Cuz you're like, same thing every day. Every Day. The. The hardness of. Once you're doing it, you're like, sailing. You're like, I know what I'm doing here.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Yeah.
Adam Pally
When you're doing a television show and there's, like, a grip yawning.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
And you're trying to get your, like, timing right.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
That is a challenge.
John Gabrus
It is. This. No one wants to hear people about how hard being a TV actor is, but one of my.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, I love it.
John Gabrus
One of the hardest things is.
Adam Pally
I could care less.
John Gabrus
One of the hardest things is when they're like, all right, you get your lines, like, great. And then, like. Like, the director's like, hey, if you can do me a favor, if you could just make sure you land here on. And you're like, yeah, no problem. But then the DPs, like, if you can actually lean heavy on your left leg, that would help me. And then the sound guy's like, you're moving your necklace so much when you walk. If you. And then the props person is like, can you remember which hand you keep your coffee in? And then all a sudden, there's like, a dozen more things, all simple, just human behavior stuff. But then you have to just put it all in your head. And then on the next one, you're like, sorry, cat. And they're like, really? Yeah. No, I know, I know. I just have one line, but everyone told me something to add to this take, and I blew, and I blew it.
Adam Pally
No, that's. That's.
John Gabrus
And you're seeing partners looking at you like, is everything okay?
Adam Pally
You don't know what a banana. You don't know how to banana.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Banana.

Adam Pally
what are you gonna miss most? Directing, Acting, Producing, acting?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, I'm gonna miss acting the most. Yeah, acting's the best.
Adam Pally
It's just you're a baby. You're a baby in the womb.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, it's so fun.
Adam Pally
It's so fun.
John Gabrus
It's you and you and Meg in particular are such a fun storyline.
Paul W. Downs
We have so much fun. I'm gonna miss her and, and, and our scene work and you know, I
Adam Pally
love your bits on the red carpet too, you know, like every time you do under. Right up my alley.
John Gabrus
I'm like, love that.
Paul W. Downs
That's nice. I'm like, is it overkill at the.
Adam Pally
No, it's. You gotta keep.
Paul W. Downs
They're so, I mean it's, you know, these shows are very self serious and it's like I, the first time we did a bit, having a bit, I was like, it's so fun. It's so fun. And everyone else is like, it's for even the people that are doing like the interviews on the red carpet, they're like, we get to talk about this. We don't have to be like, what are you excited to see? You know what I mean?
Adam Pally
And yeah, especially those red carpets are so infuriatingly demeaning of for everybody. Like you get there as an actor and you're in line to have your picture taken, you know, and you have to do It. Because you're like, I do want my picture taken. But you're in a line like, you would be at Disney World or something.
John Gabrus
Like, in that moment of giving the option, you're like, well, I'll just go sit down. I don't need a photo.
Paul W. Downs
If you had to do it many, many times, you're like, well, I could
Adam Pally
just go sit down, take my photo. A different thing. It's like, no, you have to do it now. So there's this waiting to be part of a show that you're not part of. It's. The whole thing is weird and awkward, and I feel like when you have a bit. You're just. It's like, don't with me. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
It's like, yes. Yeah. It's a show. It's entertaining, it's fun. It's. It's totally different.
Adam Pally
And you lean on it and you're like, well, this will carry me through every awkward interaction where, like, Jeff Goldblum is asking me what I'm doing next.
John Gabrus
Yeah. And you're. And you're in a pair. A pair, too. Which is so freeing as well. Like, if you have to be there, like, dressed as, like, a emo guy or whatever. And people are like, I can't tell if this is.
Paul W. Downs
What is this?
John Gabrus
Right behind you is Billy Bob Thorton. D. Dressed the same. And he's not doing a. Exactly.
Adam Pally
Oh, that's your next one. You got Billy Bob.
Paul W. Downs
We almost wore vials of blood. We were like, should we wear Vi. We were like,
Adam Pally
did you know with her that you're like, first scene, table read, you're like, oh, you and I speak the same language. We are?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Well, the first day, probably on set, I mean, we. We based the character on an assistant that we knew in the industry who is, like, both really entitled, but also kind of bumbling.
Adam Pally
Yes.
Paul W. Downs
And so most of them. Yeah, a lot of them, honestly, I can say that it's safe. They're all like that.
Adam Pally
They come from Ivy League schools, most
Paul W. Downs
of them, or their Nepo or whatever.
Adam Pally
Whatever. How, however, they've been friended and friended. A friended A Friended. Friended. And they have this amazing education, and they may not necessarily want to be an agent.
Paul W. Downs
Totally. Right. They're just doing that because it's like, well, it's a job. I have a job after school.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
And it's a hard job. I was not at an agency, but I was an assistant. It's hard, you know, So I. We had written it, and then Meg's Persona Online Was kind of. She kind of did that like stuttery half talk, you know, like some of her stuff. Like, well, you know, I'm gonna damn do that. You know what I mean? Like, she had that entit and self assuredness, but also the bumblingness.
John Gabrus
We were like, it's kind of like high, low status at the exact time.
Paul W. Downs
Exactly. Which is really hard to do. You know, like some actors are like, well, they're always good at high status. It's not. You don't even want to see them low status. But she can do both. Yeah. So I guess when we. I then did a. I was doing a stand up show and she was on it and her standup is unhinged. And I was like, this girl is special. She's a performance artist. She is like, to call her a stand up is not even right. You know, like, she's. She's special. And then the first day on set, it was so easy. Cause she does a thing that you guys know when you're acting and an improviser. To improvise in the lane and do it right is really hard. Especially for someone like her who's never been on tv. And she was able to do it in a way that didn't change the scene. And it wasn't like, well, we can't use any of that. You know what I mean? She got better at it. There were some things in the beginning. Well, you can't say that, but.
John Gabrus
But we have to do another scene after this. That keeps the story.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, exactly. Yeah. But she was just. She just got it. And we. I think because we both tickled each other, it just. You know what I mean? You could just sense that.
John Gabrus
So you can see that in the
Paul W. Downs
show, which is so fun. We have so much fun. I mean, to Lucia's chagrin, I mean, we break the most, you know, we just. We have so much fun. She's like, guys, we have to go.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
But.
John Gabrus
Yeah, that was a good Lucia. Yeah, I know. I love watching a guy do an impression of his wife and collaborators.
Paul W. Downs
Nailed it.
Adam Pally
Nailed it.
Paul W. Downs
That was new. Yeah, that was.
Adam Pally
How is Luch?
Paul W. Downs
She's good. Yeah, she's good.
Adam Pally
Is she dealing with this okay?
Paul W. Downs
She is. I think she has always said that today will be the hardest day. It's so funny. We're recording today that once it airs and it's out in the world, then every day will be further and further from the experience. And so I. She's very raw today.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Oh, yeah. I would think rap. I would think rap Day would be the hardest emotionally. But no, for not the director and the right. Because you still gotta live with it.
Paul W. Downs
We had so much more to do. I mean, we were approving things. Things yesterday that like BTS things that are going to come out, you know, like we're still doing edits and doing things and I mean, luckily we'll still have, you know, some events and things that will see the cast, but it's going to get less and less and today is like a big marker of.
Adam Pally
Are you guys all going out tonight or anything?
Paul W. Downs
We're gonna go to dinner, I think. Yeah.
John Gabrus
Nice.
Adam Pally
Where?
Paul W. Downs
Tower Bar.
Adam Pally
Really?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Oh, my favorite.
John Gabrus
Feels really good.
Adam Pally
That's my favorite spot.
John Gabrus
It feels really good to end a. Like for you guys. Like whether you wanted to do it. Like it's determined that this is the end of this show. You know what I mean?
Paul W. Downs
Not like we wanted it.
John Gabrus
Not like I hope we get to come back and then you don't.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Like the way it goes for most people who are creators and that's such a fun, extra powerful moment of like where. And we know this is the series finale going into it, which is such a. And I think as even a fan of tv, that's such a treat when that gets to happen. Because so frequently you're watching a season finale that you. You're like, well, that's maybe the series finale. We don't know and I won't find out till three months after this or whatever. So that's such a rich place to be in.
Paul W. Downs
And I think a lot of people write this way, but we always wrote so that the season finale felt like the series finale in case because that's what it's like now. You know, you never really know. But HBO was so supportive because we pitched this episode in the pitch. So we've always known what we wanted to get to. We didn't know if we'd be able to because honestly, it is a business and you have a Sammy. People are tuning in and watching and subscribing for it. So we feel so relieved and happy we got to do it the way we plan to do it. But it's very weird. It's very, very weird.
Adam Pally
You've also done with it one of the cool things outside of it, which is like you've. You've hit the highest of the highs of, of of the. The crazy big nights and rooms. Like you've been at the BAFTAs, you know, at the end. What's the crazy. Do you remember a time where you've looked around, and you're like, whoa, this is wild.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, we constantly. I don't think you're ever like, oh, whatever. There's Steven Spielberg. You know what I mean? You're like, it's crazy. I'm still like, whoa, this is nuts. I mean, weirdly, as you do it and, you know, as the world gets smaller, you, like, become more friendly with these people or people that are in other shows or, you know what I mean, that you see on the circuit, which is nice, because then it feels a little bit more like, oh, this is a fun party, because I kind of know this person I've met that. That kid's child, you know? But I. I think when we did, we were. We had like, the AFI honors are like a luncheon. Have you guys ever been to that?
Adam Pally
No, but I've seen the press.
Paul W. Downs
It's crazy because there's no press. Really?
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
I mean, there's like, they have, like, house photographer from afi, but there's no press. It's just every great movie and TV show of that year, and people want to be like, hey, I watched. I loved it. And it's crazy. I mean, that was like.
John Gabrus
Yeah. Having people you look up to come to you and say, like, the. The most. The only version of that I've ever really had was when we did the Creative arts Emmys and RuPaul said, I love your show.
Paul W. Downs
Okay.
John Gabrus
I kept walking around.
Paul W. Downs
Thank you, Rue.
John Gabrus
And we just kept walking like, that's the.
Paul W. Downs
That is the seal of approval.
John Gabrus
Yes.
Paul W. Downs
I'm like, there is no higher seal.
John Gabrus
They're a friend.
Adam Pally
Rue was my hair stylist on Happy Endings.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Right? Oh, my God.
Adam Pally
So. And honestly is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. And still, incredibly, there's like, three people that I always get emails from on my birthday, and it's Rue.
Paul W. Downs
That is so sweet.
Adam Pally
Weird Al. Weird Al.
Paul W. Downs
Love that.
Adam Pally
And Beanie Felt.
Paul W. Downs
Wow. Okay, good. Really good group.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Dream Blunt Rotation. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Dream Blunt Rotation.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Nightmare. Blunt Rotation.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
No, but that was be fun.
Paul W. Downs
That'd be fun.
Adam Pally
Oh, that was cool. Cuz it was like, you should get
John Gabrus
weird out to do a parody of one of your songs.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. That is good. Or just a cover. Just a straight cover.
Adam Pally
I don't know what I'm going to do with those.
Paul W. Downs
They're great.
Adam Pally
Oh, no. I got to figure it out.
Paul W. Downs
Got to get an album going.
Adam Pally
I'm going to burn them, Put out
John Gabrus
a special where you play songs you're like, I don't know what I'm going to do with my song.
Adam Pally
I know I didn't play. I didn't play any songs in the special. Right, Right. So I got away with it.
Paul W. Downs
Well, now we gotta. We gotta. You gotta do, like, an arena tour.
Adam Pally
I know. The problem is I can't. No one wants to hear it.
Paul W. Downs
Well, you know.
Adam Pally
Well, what are you. Are you thinking? What's. Are you yet? Like, I got an idea for next thing. Are you. Are you, like, I'm gonna take some time. I'm gonna. I'm gonna travel. I'm gonna, like, what's. What's happening?
Paul W. Downs
We're taking. We're taking a vacation. Vacation. Our first one in a while.
John Gabrus
Smart.
Adam Pally
I love six years. And I love a dance vacation because you get picks.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Disgusting.
Adam Pally
You get pics on a dance vacation?
John Gabrus
Well, you get, like, multiple angles because you're friends with all.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Because you know, all the people that
Paul W. Downs
you meet up on the road, it's just us. There's not going to be that.
Adam Pally
You gotta be Darcy in the Caribbean.
Paul W. Downs
We invited Darcy to come.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Travis, maybe Dan, maybe we get Justin back to swing.
Paul W. Downs
They're not coming.
John Gabrus
They're not coming.
Paul W. Downs
That has to work right after. It's too hard. You know, he doesn't. Yeah. So funny to tell you who's coming and not coming.
Adam Pally
The. The. What's the. What's the. You have a vacation. A long one. Like a honeymoon.
Paul W. Downs
Very long.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Two weeks.
Paul W. Downs
Very long. Two month.
John Gabrus
Yes.
Paul W. Downs
We're out of the country for two months.
John Gabrus
You're right.
Paul W. Downs
Out of the country for two months. It was supposed to be less, but we're going to actually go and see. We're going to go to Roland Garros. We're going to French Open.
Capital One Announcer
Whoa.
Adam Pally
So fun. So hot.
Paul W. Downs
I know. And Lucia, you know, is a tennis player, so she is like. We were asked if we were interested in going, and I've never seen her respond to an email faster. She was like, absolutely. I was like, well, we do have an event that we're gonna miss. And she's like, and we're gonna miss it.
Adam Pally
You're both like, you have to check with me.
John Gabrus
No, no.
Paul W. Downs
I was like, we're going. We're all going.
John Gabrus
Oh, that sucks.
Paul W. Downs
So it extended our time because we're not gonna come back and then go again.
Adam Pally
Fun.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
It's so funny how badly I want to get a lot of work so that I can have a big vacation, but it's also, like, I guess I Could just do the big vacation while I'm not getting work. Like that feels like that, that's. But my brain doesn' need like the reward for hard labor.
Adam Pally
Like.
John Gabrus
Yeah, I feel like I'm. I don't know, it's my. I feel like my dad's rolling over in his grave. Like really a vacation? Would you even. Do you know what I mean?
Adam Pally
No. I'm taking a three dayer after the kids go to sleepaway camp. Which is like a three day is like beautiful. A nice reinvigoration.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, but that's the thing. Actually do the vacation because I don't know about you, but I think that's when the best stuff happens. Or when, when I like think of the best stuff is when I'm like not. Yeah, they're not like think of it now. You know what I mean?
John Gabrus
There's no deadline, there's no email saying like when you don't want to hear about stuff is when you start hearing about stuff in a weird way.
Paul W. Downs
I was like, watch me book something. You know what I mean?
John Gabrus
Fly a fly home from Turkey.
Adam Pally
Lately I feel like I'm just.
Paul W. Downs
I would love.
Adam Pally
Lately I'm just throwing my audition tapes off a cliff. That's what I feel like completely.
Paul W. Downs
I just tape for the first time in a long time. I feel like it's so bizarre to. To do that.
Adam Pally
I tape once a week for another project that is a dream, you know.
Paul W. Downs
That's good.
Adam Pally
It's great.
Paul W. Downs
That's really good.
Adam Pally
I'm at a nice level jealous where like people will be like, put yourself on tape for this dream part. And you do it and you feel really good about it. Cuz you're like, I'm crushing this.
Paul W. Downs
Never felt that emotion. But that's cool. That's great.
Adam Pally
I've always felt that on a tape. Cuz there's no one there. It's like me and the tape, by the time it gets sent in, it's like. I grinded that.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah. You.
Adam Pally
You send it in and then there's like. It's literally like watching a bird fly off the frequency. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
It. It disappears.
Adam Pally
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Goodbye.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. Yeah.
John Gabrus
Did we ever hear back from that Nancy Myers project? She said she thought I was very funny. They're like, let's check in and then they come back. It's like it's in week two of filming right now.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
I could hear the recycling bin when I submit. I hear them click and drag it in like you know, like immediately.
Adam Pally
Did you have luck on your tape? What does that Mean, did you book it? Did you get called back?
Paul W. Downs
Oh, I don't. I just sent it in yesterday.
Capital One Announcer
Man.
John Gabrus
Man, that must be a crazy head space to be in. Is like your show that you've been a part, like, dealing with and. And creating and working on for like seven years. All of a sudden you're also like, it's wrapping up tomorrow. And then you're like, hi. Literally slating Los Angeles, California, willing to travel.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Adam Pally
I can tell you it's do it after one season at every year. It's much easier to get right back into the flow.
Paul W. Downs
Into the flow?
Adam Pally
Yes. Because I do show. And then I'm like, I hope this comes back. And they're like, no, it's not coming back. And I'm like, great. I'm all ready. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Let's get this.
John Gabrus
Build up a nice palace.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
Adam Pally
Yeah. But no, you've. It's. It's amazing that. That you've gotten to.
Paul W. Downs
It's crazy. I'm telling you. We say every night, we're like, we are so lucky. We. We do not. It is not lost on us how lucky. We are so lucky.
Adam Pally
I think it comes across in the work.
Paul W. Downs
That's good. That's really good.
Adam Pally
I. I don't. I don't ever take that from you guys. You know what I mean? Whereas sometimes in with talent, just because it's like, we know what everything means, you can be like, I. I don't know if I love this, Vi. Like, you guys never put that out. You guys always put out, like, we are working comedians.
John Gabrus
Well, I think it helps that you guys say. You say interesting things about comedy within your show too. I mean, granted, like, not everyone is permissed to do that based on their show, but this allows you to. To, like, voice opinions on comedy in the state of comedy, which I find to be really enjoyable. Like watching Hacks and then the Comeback, newest season, back to back, I was like, yeah, AI throw ax into a data center on Smart. And almost said, Phoebe. He's a good drone. Ursula's twin sister.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Ursula. That's so funny.
Adam Pally
Ursula from Ursula from Mad about you.
John Gabrus
I had a.
Adam Pally
That's where Ursula was interested, right?
Paul W. Downs
That's right. Yeah. Oh, my God.
Capital One Announcer
Yeah.
Adam Pally
That's some nerdy.
Paul W. Downs
That was good. That was good.
Adam Pally
Thank you. So are you.
John Gabrus
I had a smelly cat T shirt in high school.
Paul W. Downs
Did you?
Adam Pally
Wow.
John Gabrus
My aunt bought it for me because my aunt called me Chandler Bang. My whole life.
Paul W. Downs
I get that. I can see that.
John Gabrus
I was just like, that Was also the funny brunette white guy.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah.
John Gabrus
So if I was the funny person in my family they didn't have like my aunt didn't know who like John Candy was or something.
Paul W. Downs
Right, right, right, right, right. I was well everyone to be Chandler of our generation. Right? I did.
Adam Pally
Yeah. Everyone wanted to be Chandler. I always got made Schwimmer.
Paul W. Downs
Okay.
John Gabrus
Really? Well I was more in Joey territory in my head in real life.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, yeah.
John Gabrus
Like you're a handsome like. Yeah, yeah. You're not you, you. You harness.
Adam Pally
Yeah, no, I. Yeah, no I put
John Gabrus
it in a harness and swimmer is just you being self anti Semitic. Because honestly you might be Monica.
Adam Pally
Wow.
Paul W. Downs
Incredible.
John Gabrus
Might be Ms. Monica Geller.
Adam Pally
Maybe I'm Jen.
Paul W. Downs
Oh that now that's. Everyone wants to be Chandler. Everyone wants to be Rachel.
Adam Pally
Yeah, maybe. How hard are your new.
John Gabrus
On a daily basis. That was like foundational for.
Paul W. Downs
I wish mine were harder. I'm always like I just remember being
John Gabrus
a kid and being like this is just on tv. Like I could picture her green sweater.
Adam Pally
She was always like pulling a turkey out of the fridge to start a scene.
John Gabrus
She had her like that was why don't you make a snow.
Adam Pally
It was always a thing
John Gabrus
just keeping her cold. Guys. CR. Well, we know what kind of pieces of. We're in the writers room now.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Adam Pally
So are you two months coming back?
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Starting like you. You guys in an overall?
Paul W. Downs
We are. Yeah.
Adam Pally
So that means that you don't have to do anyway. Well are. They're not going to put you on a room right? They're not going to like.
Paul W. Downs
No.
Adam Pally
Put you on someone else's show?
Paul W. Downs
No, I don't think so. So. But we're you know, we're crazy and I think part of the coping with it ending is we've already gone on a a little research trip for our next thing.
Capital One Announcer
Oh.
Paul W. Downs
Jen Lucci and I already went and like so we are. But we're. But the hope is and it's not picked up. It's just development right now. But the hope is to do a limited because it would be a nice palate cleanser to do something after that isn't like we're launching another series which my God, wouldn't it be amazing if we got to do a series that had five seasons but that's a marathon so it's a little bit bit like you know, we get to do this thing. It's a little more contained.
John Gabrus
Figure it out, flex a different muscle.
Paul W. Downs
It's a different. It's a tone shift. Yeah. So that's so cool. That feels like the right thing. But we'll see.
Adam Pally
That's awesome.
John Gabrus
We heard some work goals. We heard some vacation goals. Do you have any personal fitness or health goals or at least aspirations or events or something you want to do?
Paul W. Downs
Health and fitness. Personal health and fitness. Yeah.
John Gabrus
Because that's where my brain goes sometimes, too. When I finally have, like, when I'm past something, I'm like, oh, you know what? I'm gonna enter in a 10k or I'm gonn. I'm.
Paul W. Downs
Well, I'm going on this vacation, so I'm ready to get, like, round and brown. You know, I'm going to get tan and be eating a lot of pasta and tennis.
Adam Pally
You're going to play tennis? Tennis is becoming very cool again.
Paul W. Downs
It is cool. I don't really play, and Lucia doesn't want to play with me because she's so good. It's just frustrating for her. You know, she plays with bsj. They play together because he's quite good. So there are people that. Like Brandon Scott Jones.
John Gabrus
Yes. We got. Put him on the list. We got to get people on the list.
Paul W. Downs
He'd be great. He'd be excellent.
Adam Pally
What about stats?
Paul W. Downs
Better than me is.
Adam Pally
What about stats? How she's holding up?
Paul W. Downs
She's good. She's. She's playing a lobotomy. I don't know if she's going to go through with it, but she's like, I need to go to Arkham Asylum. I need a lobotomy.
John Gabrus
Why so serious?
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
Adam Pally
Talk about joker energy.
John Gabrus
Stats. Every good production team needs one joker.
Paul W. Downs
That's right.
Adam Pally
Of course.
Paul W. Downs
Right? That's right.
Adam Pally
Without me, there's no you. Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah. And that is true. But she might. She might come on vacation with us a little bit.
Adam Pally
Oh, cool.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah, a little bit.
Adam Pally
You guys are living.
John Gabrus
Adam and I just sitting here going.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
So two months.
Paul W. Downs
Hey, you want to come? You guys are welcome.
John Gabrus
Oh, yeah. I wasn't gonna say anything.
Adam Pally
I don't know. I'll be in London. We've got a house close to France.
Paul W. Downs
It is close. It is close. We're gonna be in Italy for a month, so.
Adam Pally
Now you're speaking my linguine.
Paul W. Downs
That's right. I know. Well, we almost made a movie there.
Adam Pally
Really? You and I. Yeah. I still want to make that movie.
Paul W. Downs
Amazing.
Capital One Announcer
Really? Yes.
Paul W. Downs
Yes, I know it's a great movie.
Adam Pally
No, I really want to make a movie, and I, more than anything, anything, want. I just want to work with you guys. I. I email. I email Lucia two times a Year saying please direct me in something.
Paul W. Downs
Well, she would love to. I know she loves you both.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Very big fans, Luchi, and as do
Adam Pally
I, as big fans of both.
John Gabrus
And you know she loves you guys. She told me I had to do this show.
Adam Pally
No, she told me she was too raw.
Paul W. Downs
She approves all my podcasts and I. I was not allowed to do any. Except for this one. One other one.
Adam Pally
And you're doing a tennis one episode. No, we love you long time and.
John Gabrus
And we've been saying that for years.
Adam Pally
I've been saying that since we finally
John Gabrus
got rid of the accent.
Paul W. Downs
That's good. That's a pretty good. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Proud of myself.
John Gabrus
Good work.
Adam Pally
Kept out of my pocket for 45.
Paul W. Downs
Really good. Really good.
John Gabrus
Well, thank you so much, Paul. We appreciate you coming on and love you guys. Congratulations. And if. I mean, by the time you're watching this, the Hacks series finale has come out.
Paul W. Downs
That's right.
John Gabrus
If you haven't watched the show show at all, binge that shit.
Adam Pally
Are you gonna be a thing? Are you doing any more HBO panels this week? Because I have one tomorrow.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, you do?
Adam Pally
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
What is it?
Adam Pally
It's for the stand up.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, cool. Yeah. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Are you done with that?
Paul W. Downs
I'm done. I think I'm done.
Adam Pally
Nice. I think I'm done because I really dreading a panel.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, really? You'd be great on a panel.
John Gabrus
I joined the Real HBO Real Sex panel tomorrow, which I'm kind of nervous about. I guess I have to wear clown makeup.
Paul W. Downs
Funny. Bring back HBO Real Sex.
John Gabrus
I would love to host Real Sex.
Paul W. Downs
Amazing.
Adam Pally
You should.
Paul W. Downs
Honestly.
John Gabrus
That was really good.
Paul W. Downs
That is.
Adam Pally
You should host Real Sex.
Paul W. Downs
I love that.
Adam Pally
And there's so much up going on.
Paul W. Downs
I know now it's great. There's so much more.
Adam Pally
So much more.
John Gabrus
There's so much more.
Adam Pally
Like.
John Gabrus
And I'm open to learning about everything.
Paul W. Downs
Yeah.
John Gabrus
Yeah.
Paul W. Downs
Okay. That's really good.
Capital One Announcer
Okay.
Adam Pally
Okay.
Capital One Announcer
Okay.
John Gabrus
I was just here, but I'm in Hbolilu's production company.
Adam Pally
I'm off camera.
John Gabrus
Talent purely. I'm off camera.
Paul W. Downs
You're there. You're there.
John Gabrus
You're in the cage.
Paul W. Downs
You're in the cage.
John Gabrus
You call me talent on set. I'm cranking it, but I'm not on camera.
Paul W. Downs
Oh, my God. Okay, let's do it.
John Gabrus
Paul Downs, Real Sex take. You're so good at it.
Paul W. Downs
Really good. Really good. Oh, my God.
Capital One Announcer
Awesome.
Adam Pally
Thanks, Paul.
Paul W. Downs
Thank you, guys.
John Gabrus
Brother, good luck with whatever way more important you're doing today. Dude, are we allowed to take a two month Vacation after we record three episodes of Staying Alive. Because I want to go away for two months with you, dude. I wanna.
Adam Pally
You know what is so nice about, like, I don't.
John Gabrus
I.
Adam Pally
My mind doesn't work the way that our guests do sometimes. And it's so nice to talk to people and just see how their mind, how they live life. And it's like, this guy's worked so hard. He put out arguably one of the best comedic TV shows of all time. And in his mind, he's like, you know what? I'm gonna take two months off and take my family to Italy and. And that's what I'm doing. I. I don't have to apologize for it. I'm just gonna do it and, and live in it and whatever.
John Gabrus
It's low key. Like, one of the fun side effects of this show is just being open to from people who are our friends, but hearing more and more from them and like, interesting perspectives, and I was just like, fuck, yeah. I got to set it up where I'm in a. In the headspace that I deserve a two month vacation, you know?
Adam Pally
Yeah. But I think what he's saying is kind of like, you got to just do it.
John Gabrus
You got to just pull it.
Adam Pally
Yeah. You got to pull a trigger. Like, you. You want to go to Italy, go to Italy. If you get called for a job, you come back.
John Gabrus
Right. And. Or if like two months in Italy is not. You didn't just do five seasons of a TV show. So two months in Italy is not. But you want two months, months off. You scale that down and you figure
Adam Pally
out how you do that.
John Gabrus
Yeah. You just make it work. Yeah.
Adam Pally
Yeah. That's really like, I just met this
John Gabrus
guy I shot an indie movie with, like three months ago. I saw him again last night for the first time, and he was like, I moved to Mexico City. I'm like, what? He's like, yeah, it's not a crazy flight to come in when I get some work or whatever. But he's like, it's great there. It's a little cheaper. The culture is really interesting. And I'm like, I. And I know there are a lot of people who do that, but when you just hear from someone, like, and you're like, oh, I've never even considered that as a possibility. And whether or not it makes any sense for me, it's very fun to hear these other perspectives on, like, how to live outside of our jobs too.
Adam Pally
Yeah, no, Stay alive.
John Gabrus

Your song about Everything's a Hundred Dollars is so I think about it every day now. Every time I go to the house, I'm like, it's $100.
Adam Pally
I know.
Paul W. Downs
I'm like, I'm parking at a meter. It's $100. You know what I mean? Like two hours is a hundred dollars. It's really everything's a hundred dollars.
Adam Pally
At least. At least I know.
John Gabrus
