Rachel Winitsky
There's nothing like bird watching on a clear summer day. The only thing that comes close is fishing on a foggy autumn day, which is exactly what we're doing right now.
Peter McNerney
I couldn't agree more, Rachel. I love fishing off the side of the ship. I hope we catch something strange, bizarre, out of the ordinary, odd, kooky, unusual. Maybe like a thesaurus.
Rachel Winitsky
No, thanks, Peter. I'm not trying to meet a dinosaur today. Okay, let's see what we can catch. Hmm. I just caught an old tire. Meh. And here is a pair of fancy shoes. Nope. An autographed baseball. Ooh, looks like it was signed Meryl Streep. Nope.
Peter McNerney
Ha. Nothing unusual yet. Let's keep fishing.
Rachel Winitsky
Oh, wait a second. I think I caught something. Look, on the end of my fishing line in the water. It looks like a bottle.
Peter McNerney
That's no ordinary bottle, Rachel.
Rachel Winitsky
Why? Is it a rare soda flavor like peach mango or spicy milk? Or my discontinued line of soft drinks, Rachel Cola?
Megan O'Neill
What?
Peter McNerney
No. It looks like a wishing bottle. Reel it in. I'll help.
Megan O'Neill
Wow.
Peter McNerney
I was right. It is a wishing bottle.
Rachel Winitsky
A wishing bottle.
Peter McNerney
A wishing bottle.
Eric Austin
Did somebody say wishing bottle?
Peter McNerney
Yes, Eric, we both did.
Eric Austin
Could it be? Why, yes, it is an actual wishing bottle.
Rachel Winitsky
I'm sorry, can someone tell me what that means?
Eric Austin
Legend foretells that once every 99 years, a wishing bottle will emerge from the depths of the ocean. Legend foretells that if you flip the bottle upside down and tap it gently, a wishing wizard will appear. Legend foretells that after that, you'll sort of be in a classic three wishes situation.
Peter McNerney
Eric, do you have to start every sentence with legend foretells?
Eric Austin
Legend foretells that? I do.
Megan O'Neill
I love storytelling.
Hannah Solo
I'm very different from everybody Conf. Curiosity.
Megan O'Neill
Okay, that's a really funny idea. We have to send that in.
Hannah Solo
Characters aren't just a fragment of your imagination. They can be real people. I believe all the things in my story. Human beings are just able to create the story Pirates.
Lee Overtree
Welcome back to the Story Pirates Podcast.
Rachel Winitsky
Where we take stories written by kids.
Peter McNerney
And turn them into sketch comedy and songs.
Megan O'Neill
Wow. I've never seen a real wishing bottle before. It's beautiful.
Peter McNerney
I'm gonna wish for a chocolate fountain.
Rachel Winitsky
I'm going to wish for my agent to call me back. I'm going to wish for my soda company, Rachel Cola, to finally catch on.
Lee Overtree
I'm gonna wish for more wishing bottles. And everyone is going to say, wow, Lee, you're so smart. Nobody has ever thought of that before. You're a genius, et cetera.
Eric Austin
Legend foretells that we'll all get to make wishes very, very soon. But first, let's do a story. And here to introduce it is the author.
Hannah Solo
Hi, my name is Hannah. I'm nine years old and I live in New York. This is my story, how to make grilled peaches.
Sheena Shunsheid
Good morning and welcome to Good Morning Local Town, the number one morning talk show in your local town. I'm your host, Sheena Shunsheid. And this is my co host, Randy.
Lee Overtree
That's me. Ha ha.
Sheena Shunsheid
Today we'll be asking spring forward spring fashion as we preview outfits for daylight savings time. But first, have you ever wondered how to make grilled peaches?
Lee Overtree
Every day of my life. Ha ha.
Sheena Shunsheid
Wonder no more. Today's first guest is an expert in how to make grilled peaches. Please welcome world famous chef Julia Adoltz.
Julia Adoltz
Hello.
Sheena Shunsheid
Welcome to the show, Julia.
Julia Adoltz
I am delighted to share with you all my simple, no fuss grilled peaches. It's the perfect recipe for a hot summer day.
Sheena Shunsheid
Yum. We have a whole gourmet kitchen set up for you.
Julia Adoltz
Great. Because the very first thing you must do to make grilled peaches is to take all the cushions off your couch.
Sheena Shunsheid
I'm sorry, Take all the cushions off your couch.
Julia Adoltz
It's a very important step.
Sheena Shunsheid
Well, you're the chef. Let's get those cushions off the couch.
Peter McNerney
I'll have nowhere to sit.
Sheena Shunsheid
Okay, all the cushions are off the studio couch.
Julia Adoltz
You need to get out your vampire grill.
Sheena Shunsheid
Vampire grill?
Peter McNerney
I don't even know what that is.
Lee Overtree
Ha ha.
Julia Adoltz
Don't worry, I never go anywhere without my vampire grill. Or I should say without a vampire that owns a grill. Oh, Vlad the pale.
Sheena Shunsheid
Sorry, you know a vampire.
Lee Overtree
Hello.
Julia Adoltz
Hi, Vlad. May I borrow your grill?
Lee Overtree
Making grilled peaches, eh? Sure.
Megan O'Neill
Here you go.
Lee Overtree
But don't forget to clean it when you're done.
Megan O'Neill
Wahaha Gah.
Julia Adoltz
Now to open the vampire grill. And since vampire grills only work at night, we'll just sit Here and wait for the sun to go down.
Sheena Shunsheid
But it's 7am why would you bring a grill on a morning show if it only works at night?
Lee Overtree
Seems like poor planning.
Sheena Shunsheid
Guess that means it's time for a commercial break. Welcome back to Good Morning, local town and our segment on how to make grilled peaches. I hope you enjoyed that 12 hour commercial break.
Peter McNerney
I've got cramps in both my legs.
Julia Adoltz
I promise it's worth the wait. Let's fire up the vampire grill and grill those peaches.
Sheena Shunsheid
Where's that spooky music coming from?
Julia Adoltz
The grill. Now it's time to toss on the peaches.
Sheena Shunsheid
Wow. There you have it, folks. Grilled peaches. Thank you so much for tuning in.
Julia Adoltz
Not so fast. Who wants to eat a grilled peach at night?
Sheena Shunsheid
Do we have to sit here and wait 12 more hours until it's the day?
Lee Overtree
No.
Sheena Shunsheid
Phew.
Julia Adoltz
We have to go to your living room and then wait 12 more hours.
Sheena Shunsheid
My living room producers, are we good to take another 12 hour commercial break? We are. Okay, we'll see you after the break. Welcome back to the show. It took us the whole 12 hours to move all our cameras and crew to my living room where we're still doing our segment on how to make grilled peaches.
Peter McNerney
I desperately need a bath.
Julia Adoltz
Our grilled peaches have cooled, so now we must heat them up.
Sheena Shunsheid
Okay, so do you want to use my microwave?
Julia Adoltz
Microwave? How dare you. I will draw a demon circle around the peach container.
Sheena Shunsheid
Demon circle.
Julia Adoltz
The demon won't attack if I cover my head with my sweater and rub it with flowers.
Rachel Winitsky
What?
Julia Adoltz
I'll just grab these flowers here.
Sheena Shunsheid
Hey, my grandma got me those from my last day.
Julia Adoltz
That demon will never be able to smell me now.
Megan O'Neill
Look.
Sheena Shunsheid
The demon circle is generating heat which is warming the peaches. I guess that means that the peaches are grilled and this segment is over. My living room is on fire.
Julia Adoltz
Demon.
Megan O'Neill
Fire.
Sheena Shunsheid
Can we get a fire extinguisher here, someone?
Wishing Wizard
I got one.
Sheena Shunsheid
Ha ha.
Megan O'Neill
Phew.
Sheena Shunsheid
My living room is ruined. But at least we finally have our grilled peaches.
Julia Adoltz
The next step is. Oh, there's more going to the demon avoidance store.
Sheena Shunsheid
I don't even know what that is. Let's take another commercial break while we relocate our entire production a second time and I re evaluate my life choices. Welcome back to the show. Supposedly we are standing in front of a demon avoidance store, but it looks like a candy store to me.
Julia Adoltz
That's because you're looking at it wrong.
Sheena Shunsheid
How do we look at it correctly?
Julia Adoltz
We just Take these flowers and turn them into goggles like this.
Sheena Shunsheid
Hey, my grandfather gave me those.
Julia Adoltz
Now, when you look at the candy store with your flower goggles, you'll see that this is really a demon avoidance.
Sheena Shunsheid
Let me see those.
Lee Overtree
Whoa.
Sheena Shunsheid
That's terrifying.
Julia Adoltz
Let's go inside.
Megan O'Neill
Oh. Welcome to the Demon avoidance store. May I help you?
Sheena Shunsheid
We're here to make grilled peaches.
Megan O'Neill
Ah, then you need some living room replenishing spray.
Sheena Shunsheid
Some what?
Julia Adoltz
Here it is. Living room replenishing spray.
Sheena Shunsheid
Great. So we're done. We found the spray, we grilled the peaches, and now we can end this forsaken segment, right?
Julia Adoltz
Of course not. We have to pay. Oh, demon. We're ready to buy.
Megan O'Neill
Wonderful. All I will require is your soul food.
Lee Overtree
What?
Megan O'Neill
Kidding. Old demon joke. No, we just take normal currency here. You know, demon dollars.
Sheena Shunsheid
How do you get demon dollars?
Julia Adoltz
Just take this ordinary penny and rub it on your butt.
Sheena Shunsheid
My what?
Julia Adoltz
You heard me. Start rubbing.
Sheena Shunsheid
This is so embarrassing. Okay, it's done. Now can we pay and get out of here?
Megan O'Neill
Not so fast. I have to make sure it's really a demon dollar. Put your butt penny over there in the Kiyosukuba machine.
Sheena Shunsheid
I put it in the machine. But why is it called Kiyoskuba? I see.
Megan O'Neill
Thank you for your business. Please come again.
Sheena Shunsheid
Sure. And that's how we make grilled peaches.
Julia Adoltz
And let's head back to the studio.
Megan O'Neill
Come on.
Sheena Shunsheid
Okay. What's one more 12 hour commercial break?
Megan O'Neill
Anyway.
Sheena Shunsheid
Welcome back to I don't know. All I know is that we've been making grilled peaches for what seems like an eternity.
Peter McNerney
I wonder if my kids will remember my face.
Julia Adoltz
Ha.
Lee Overtree
I. Huh?
Julia Adoltz
Now for the final step.
Sheena Shunsheid
I'll believe it when I see it.
Julia Adoltz
Eating the grilled peaches. Here you go. Well, what do you think?
Sheena Shunsheid
You have turned my dream job into a waking nightmare. The entire crew has quit. Our ratings are the worst they've ever been. I've been trapped in a Sisyphean nightmare of a segment. And for what? The best grilled peaches I've ever had.
Julia Adoltz
And that's how to make grilled peaches.
Megan O'Neill
The end.
Sheena Shunsheid
And now, over to Trip with sports.
Eric Austin
Ha ha.
Sheena Shunsheid
Sports.
Eric Austin
Oh, I know.
Megan O'Neill
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I was distracted by the wishing bottle.
Rachel Winitsky
Me too. I can't stop staring at it, thinking about all the amazing wishes we're about to get.
Peter McNerney
I'm gonna wish for unlimited snacks. I've had to resort to eating some things around here that are not technically snacks or food.
Megan O'Neill
I'm Gonna wish for a brand new graphing calculator. Someone took a big bite out of mine.
Rachel Winitsky
I'm going to wish for the power to see 10 seconds into the the.
Lee Overtree
The future.
Peter McNerney
Whoa.
Rachel Winitsky
How did you know I was gonna say that?
Peter McNerney
I'm wish we were talking to wish you happy.
Sheena Shunsheid
Not only Help.
Eric Austin
Everybody quiet. Calm down. It's time to flip the wishing bottle, gently tap it, and meet the wishing wizard. Here we go.
Lee Overtree
Wow, look. Somebody's coming out of the bottle.
Rachel Winitsky
Is it Rachel Cola?
Lee Overtree
What's Rachel Cola?
Rachel Winitsky
It was a beautiful dream.
Peter McNerney
No, it's not Rachel Cola.
Sheena Shunsheid
It's the. The Wishing Wizard.
Wishing Wizard
Hello, story pirates.
Lee Overtree
The Wishing wizard knows who we are.
Wishing Wizard
Of course I do. You're the number one kids and family podcast across all platforms. I have a lot of time in the bottle to listen to podcasts. Have you heard the Daily from the New York Times? I don't know where they come up with that stuff. Serious? No, no. Sorry, I'm rambling. It's time. The moment I'm sure you've all been waiting for.
Lee Overtree
Oh.
Wishing Wizard
Oh. There's something in there. You tapped on my bottle. So now it is time to present myself here in the form of a rhyme. I'm a magical wizard from deep in the sea, and now you will grant to me these wishes 3.
Eric Austin
I'm sorry, what was that last part?
Megan O'Neill
Oh.
Wishing Wizard
I'm a magical wizard from deep in the sea, and now you will grant to me these wishes three.
Lee Overtree
Ha. Classic slip of the tongue. I'm sure you meant to say, now I will grant you these wishes 3. You are granting us the wishes, obviously, right?
Wishing Wizard
Nope.
Eric Austin
What do you mean, nope?
Wishing Wizard
Oh, I apologize. It's short for. No, I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. Deal with it.
Rachel Winitsky
But. But you're a wishing wizard. We thought we were going to get to make wishes.
Wishing Wizard
Common misunderstanding. I'm not the type wizard who grants wishes. I'm the type of wizard who makes wishes.
Eric Austin
But legend foretells that after the wishing wizard appears, we'll be in a classic three wishes situation.
Wishing Wizard
This is a classic three wishes situation. I get three wishes and you have to make them come true. Deal with it.
Rachel Winitsky
This is quite the twist.
Wishing Wizard
Ooh, let's see. What do I want to wish for?
Megan O'Neill
Hmm.
Wishing Wizard
Anything in the whole wide world. Let's see.
Lee Overtree
Hold on, Wishing wizard, What happens if we can't make your wishes come true?
Wishing Wizard
Then I won't go back into my bottle. I'll never leave your ship. And let's just say that a lot of my closest friends have called me unbearably annoying. I am loud, I am messy, and I am currently training for a yodeling contest.
Megan O'Neill
Yodeling. Yeehoo.
Eric Austin
Okay, we'll try our best. What are your wishes?
Wishing Wizard
Now we're talking. I wish for a tuna sandwich with mustard and cheese.
Megan O'Neill
Okay, that's not too hard. I feel like we can figure that one out.
Wishing Wizard
And I wish for a glass of water. No ice. Tall glass.
Lee Overtree
All right, so far I think we can pull this off. For a second. I was worried these would be difficult wishes.
Wishing Wizard
And with my third wish, I wish for $30.
Megan O'Neill
$30. This is story Pirate.
Lee Overtree
Story Pirates.
Eric Austin
Money grows out of my dress.
Wishing Wizard
Good luck, Story Pirates. You better get to work. Remember, I'm not leaving your ship until I get my wishes.
Megan O'Neill
Oh, boy.
Hannah Solo
We'll be right back after a few words for the grownups.
Benjamin Salka

Megan O'Neill
Aren't adventurers supposed to have a specific purpose?
Benjamin Salka
What are you doing on this quest?
Megan O'Neill
Just meeting strangers? Yep.
Sheena Shunsheid
My purpose is to have no purpose.
Megan O'Neill
Though I sort of find purpose as I go.
Eric Austin
My basket.
Lee Overtree
It's missing.
Sheena Shunsheid
I have tried many means of defense.
Wishing Wizard
But none have yet proven successful.
Sheena Shunsheid
I just wish someone would succeed in getting that darn sword.
Lee Overtree
I am under attack by this Ruffian.
Megan O'Neill
I want to be big and strong and fight evil.
Sheena Shunsheid
I have hope that if you show.
Rachel Winitsky
Up at her door, she might listen.
Megan O'Neill
Want to help me?
Lee Overtree
Yell at them with your sword in a threatening manner.
Megan O'Neill
Side Questing is a fantasy podcast about.
Benjamin Salka
Avoiding the main plot.
Megan O'Neill
It follows Ryan, an adventurer who's willing to help just about anyone out, as long as they're not being asked to deal with that scary wizard everyone keeps talking about. Subscribe today on your favorite podcast app.
Wishing Wizard
You found this old bottle and gave it a flip and appeared. I then did on the deck of your ship. And I won't ever leave to return to the fishes till you grant to me my three magical wishes. She's still here.
Rachel Winitsky
Is she clipping her toenails?
Wishing Wizard
Ooh, that feels nice. I haven't cut these bad boys in a long time. Ow. Sharp. And by the way, I love your furniture. So comfortable. Where did you get this chair?
Megan O'Neill
That's not a chair. That's Peter.
Rachel Winitsky
We're gonna have to grant the wishing wizard her three wishes if we want her to leave.
Lee Overtree
Okay, let's figure this out. Her first wish was a tuna sandwich.
Wishing Wizard
Don't forget the mustard and cheese.
Lee Overtree
Does anyone know how to make one of those?
Rachel Winitsky
I can do it. I once auditioned to play a sandwich making robot in an episode of Big City Detectives, and I think I remember a thing or two. She never said it had to be good, did she?
Eric Austin
No. It can be bad. It can be terrible. It just needs to be a tuna sandwich with mustard and cheese.
Rachel Winitsky
Okay, perfect. Who's got bre?
Peter McNerney
I do.
Rachel Winitsky
Thanks, Peter. Who's got tuna?
Peter McNerney
Me also.
Megan O'Neill
Eh.
Rachel Winitsky
How about mustard and cheese?
Peter McNerney
Here you go. And here you go, Peter.
Rachel Winitsky
You had all of that in your pockets?
Peter McNerney
Yeah. What do you think cargo shorts are for? Not tuna.
Rachel Winitsky
Okay, time to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. And voila. Wishing wizard, here is your tuna sandwich with mustard and cheese.
Wishing Wizard
Thank you, story Pirates.
Megan O'Neill
Mm, mm, mm, mm.
Lee Overtree
Cheese.
Eric Austin
Uh, we did it.
Rachel Winitsky
Now, her second wish was a glass of water. No ice, tall glass.
Eric Austin
Does anyone know how to make one of those?
Rachel Winitsky
I was the creator and CEO of one of the worst soda companies of all time, with flavors like sour corn. Bottle and empty. So, yeah, I think I can handle a glass of water.
Lee Overtree
Rachel Cola had a bottle flavored soda.
Megan O'Neill
I told you it was bad.
Rachel Winitsky
What I'm trying to say is, her wish is my wishing wizard. Here's your water, no ice, tall glass.
Wishing Wizard
Thank you, story Pirates. Now for my final wish. $30.
Lee Overtree
Okay, story pirates, this one is Going to be tough. Does anyone have any cash on them?
Eric Austin
I have $1.14.
Peter McNerney
And I have seven potato chips. I mean zero.
Megan O'Neill
Anyone else? No? Okay, by my calculations, that's $1.14. That's not nearly enough. What are we going to do?
Wishing Wizard
I could stay on this ship forever. It's so nice just kicking back, watching all the little islands and beaches we pass by, all the little fishies in the sea.
Megan O'Neill
Wait a second. I might have an idea.
Eric Austin
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Lee Overtree
Story pirates. Let's huddle up and speak in hushed tones.
Rachel Winitsky
Well, friends, I've heard a lot of plans and a lot of schemes, and I think this is one of our best. Let's do it.
Megan O'Neill
Okay, there are two islands nearby. Lee and Megan, you'll go to the one on the left. Eric and Peter, you'll go to the one on the right. Rachel and I will suit up in the scuba gear and dive deep into the ocean and meet back here after a quick sound effects and music montage.
Lee Overtree
Perfect. Ready? Go. Okay, we're back. Let's huddle up. And whisper again.
Peter McNerney
Whisper again.
Megan O'Neill
Whisper again.
Julia Adoltz
Mumble again.
Eric Austin
We did it. We actually did it. Let's go present this to the wishing wizard.
Wishing Wizard
I'm ready for my $30.
Megan O'Neill
Wishing wizard, here is your 30 sand dollars. But, but you never specified what kind of dollars you wished for. So we filled in the blanks ourselves and gathered up Sand Dollars, a species of flat burrowing sea urchins found commonly in the ocean or washed up on beaches. Here's 30 of them. Hello. We're Sand Dollars. Are you our mama? We love. We're Sand Dollars.
Wishing Wizard
Well, I, I, I suppose you're right. I never did say what kind of dollars. How clever. Oh, I love them. I love them all. Thank you for my Sand Dollars. Story Pirates.
Megan O'Neill
Yay.
Wishing Wizard
You've granted all my wishes. Time for me to go back into the wishing bottle. I'll never forget you, story Pirates. Yoda la he hoo hoo.
Peter McNerney
Good job, everybody. Time to toss this bottle back into the ocean.
Lee Overtree
Well, we may have not gotten to wish for anything ourselves, but we made someone else's wishes come true. And honestly, that felt pretty special.
Rachel Winitsky
And I got my greatest wish. A fun day with my friends.
Eric Austin
Aw.
Rachel Winitsky
She forgot one of the Sand Dollars.
Megan O'Neill
Keep me.
Rachel Winitsky
Sure, why not? Well, story pirates and one tiny little sand dollar. Should we do another story?
Lee Overtree
Yeah, okay. Okay, listeners, this next story is really special. A couple of months ago, we got to work with an organization called Make a Wish, who asked us to help grant a Wish for an incredible kid named Matilda and Make a wish. Not only got us a story written by Matilda, but they also helped Matilda and her family travel down to New York City to see the story. Pirates record her story in the studio. Matilda also got to play a part in her story, and honestly, it was a wonderful experience. We loved performing Matilda's story for her live, and she was so good in her role. Take a listen and see if you can guess which character she plays. And here's Matilda to introduce her story.
Hannah Solo
Hi, my name's Matilda. I'm nine years old, and I'm from Vermont. And this. This is my story. Peanut butter smoothies.
Megan O'Neill
Wow, Max. I can't believe we finally graduated from obedience school. I thought this day would never come.
Hannah Solo
Tell me about it. If someone tells me to roll over one more time, I'm gonna lose it.
Lee Overtree
Max, no barking.
Hannah Solo
Sorry, Mr. Terrier.
Eric Austin
Hey, puppy. Over here.
Megan O'Neill
Oh. Oh, that's my dad. My dad. I'll be.
Hannah Solo
Why do you seem so excited to see your dad?
Megan O'Neill
Because, Max, my mom is at a conference in San Franbarxo for the week. And you know what that means.
Hannah Solo
Your dad's in charge of dinner?
Lee Overtree
Yes.
Sheena Shunsheid
Oh, yeah.
Megan O'Neill
I'm gonna have my favorite treat in the world. A peanut butter smoothie.
Lee Overtree
Dogs, no howling.
Hannah Solo
Sorry, Mr. Terrier.
Eric Austin
Puppy, come on.
Megan O'Neill
Gotta go. Bye, Max. Bye. Peanut butter smoothie, here I come.
Eric Austin
There she is. Ms. Obedient School Graduate.
Megan O'Neill
Thanks, dad. Time to celebrate.
Eric Austin
Ah, but first, Puppy, sit.
Megan O'Neill
Right.
Eric Austin
Stay. Now put on your seatbelt. Wow, you really were paying attention at obedience school, I see.
Megan O'Neill
Yep. Sounds like I deserve a treat.
Eric Austin
You can stop right there and put those puppy dog eyes away. Don't think I don't know what you're up to.
Megan O'Neill
Whatever do you mean, Father?
Eric Austin
You think just because Mom's out of town, I'm gonna roll over and let you do whatever you want, like jump on the nice couch or eat junk food?
Megan O'Neill
Oh, come on, dad. Are you telling me that you actually have a dinner plan for tonight? You are gonna shop and cook?
Eric Austin
Well, I didn't say that.
Megan O'Neill
Fast food, here we come.
Eric Austin
Fine, but I'm ordering.
Megan O'Neill
Oh, we'll see about that.
Lee Overtree
Hello.
Peter McNerney
Welcome to Doggles Hummer the Dog Dog Hound.
Megan O'Neill
Can I help you?
Eric Austin
Um, let's see.
Megan O'Neill
Dad, why are you acting like you don't know what I want? A kibble burger with the greatest treats on Earth? A peanut butter smoothie.
Eric Austin
Hey, I'm the dad, not you. I order what I want you to get.
Megan O'Neill
Come on. We both know you're gonna give in so let's drop this charade.
Eric Austin
Oh, yeah. Watch this for the puppy. Can we please have a treat meal with one kibble burger and a peanut butter smoothie?
Megan O'Neill
Dad, quit playing around. Anything else?
Wishing Wizard
And here it comes.
Eric Austin
A bag of small treats.
Megan O'Neill
Yeah. Wait, what?
Eric Austin
And I'll take a salmon burger with a cup of peanut butter flavored water.
Peter McNerney
Nothing else?
Megan O'Neill
Yes, something else. Peanut butter.
Eric Austin
Nope.
Peter McNerney
That's all coming right up. Please pull up to the second doghouse window.
Eric Austin
Thank you.
Megan O'Neill
Dad, stop the car.
Julia Adoltz
What are you doing?
Megan O'Neill
Go back.
Wishing Wizard
I need a peanut butter smoothie.
Eric Austin
Oh, sorry, honey. Someone else needs to order. We need to go down to the next window.
Megan O'Neill
No.
Peter McNerney
Hi there. That'll be three bones.
Eric Austin
Here you go.
Peter McNerney
And here's your food.
Eric Austin
Thank you.
Peter McNerney
Have a nice day.
Eric Austin
Bye. Come on, honey. We need to get to the house.
Megan O'Neill
Daddy. What have you done? Mom. Out of town smoothie? Why?
Julia Adoltz
I thought I knew you.
Eric Austin
I guess this old dog isn't as easy to push around as you thought.
Megan O'Neill
I'll never be happy again.
Eric Austin
Let's get home and eat this yummy dinner. Ah. That was some delicious dog food. Don't you agree, puppy?
Megan O'Neill
I can't hear you, Father, from all the way down here in this pit of despair.
Eric Austin
Puppy, I know what you're doing. You're trying to make me feel bad so I get you a treat. But it's not going to work.
Megan O'Neill
Whatever could you mean, Father? Ugh.
Eric Austin
Okay, honey, get in the car. I'm bringing you somewhere.
Megan O'Neill
Where, Daddy? Where?
Eric Austin
It's a surprise.
Megan O'Neill
Nothing could surprise me anymore. Not after the betrayal I have suffered on this day.
Lee Overtree
Come on.
Megan O'Neill
Dad. We've been in the car for a half hour. Are we there yet? Where are we going?
Eric Austin
Quit your whining. Why don't you stick your head out the window to distract yourself?
Megan O'Neill
Oh, you think I'm the kind of puppy that gets distracted so easily? That. Omg.
Julia Adoltz
Daddy stopped the car.
Eric Austin
What is it?
Megan O'Neill
What is that?
Eric Austin
What is what?
Megan O'Neill
That big building with pillars at least as tall as two of our dog houses. I've never seen it before. It's all the different colors in rainbow order.
Eric Austin
How do you know all the colors of the rainbow? Aren't dogs colorblind?
Megan O'Neill
A dog can dream, can't she?
Sheena Shunsheid
What's in there?
Megan O'Neill
Daddy, can we please go in? I know that it's gotta be more interesting than whatever boring errand you're taking me on.
Eric Austin
Okay, okay. If you say so.
Megan O'Neill
Come on, let's open the door and go inside. Whoa. Look at this place. It's almost.
Lee Overtree
It's almost magical.
Sheena Shunsheid
Huh?
Megan O'Neill
Oh, I didn't see you there, old guard dog.
Lee Overtree
We've been expecting you, puppy.
Megan O'Neill
You've been expecting me? What do you mean?
Lee Overtree
Right this way, through the doggy door. Whoa.
Megan O'Neill
Just me. Daddy, are you coming?
Eric Austin
Seems like you don't need me.
Megan O'Neill
What?
Lee Overtree
Have fun going down the doggy slide.
Megan O'Neill
What doggy slide? What is this place? It looks like a playground, but it's not. Exactly a playground.
Julia Adoltz
Welcome to the mansion.
Megan O'Neill
Whoa. I'm right at the foot of the rainbow playground looking thing. It looks so fun up there. Maybe I'll start climbing this ramp. Ah. The ramp is extending up. I'm getting higher and higher and higher. Oh, I'm so far off the ground. I'm approaching the clouds. This is all happening really fast. It stopped. I'm just completely surrounded by clouds.
Eric Austin
Careful up there, puppy. Remember, you can't walk on clouds.
Megan O'Neill
You're not in charge anymore, Daddy. I'll walk on the clouds if I want to. Like this. Huh? This cloud is solid. Boy, if it wasn't, that would have been a really bad idea. What's gotten into me today? I just graduated from obedience school, but for some reason, all I've been is disobedient.
Julia Adoltz
Sorry to interrupt this moment of personal reflection, but the final surprise is here.
Lee Overtree
The final table.
Megan O'Neill
How did I not notice that giant table way up high above me? Oh, I know. It's not good to feed puppies at the table. I learned that at school. But how can I not? A giant doggy staircase just popped up. Easy access to the dinner table. Oh, this is a puppy's dream. I gotta find out what's up there. Here I go. It's a surprise. Dad.
Eric Austin
Hey, kiddo.
Megan O'Neill
Mom.
Rachel Winitsky
I caught the early flight back from San Franbarxo.
Megan O'Neill
Max. Hey, bestie. But what are you all doing here?
Hannah Solo
We're here to celebrate your graduation from obedience school.
Peter McNerney
With this.
Eric Austin
Is that an endless number of peanut butter smoothies? You bet your fleas it is.
Megan O'Neill
Daddy, you're the best. Oh, I love you. I'm so sorry that I was so disobedient. I feel like I don't deserve this.
Eric Austin
It's okay, kiddo. No, puppy's perfect. I mean, I still drink out of the toilet sometimes.
Rachel Winitsky
You what now?
Eric Austin
Come on, let's drink all the peanut butter smoothies we can.
Rachel Winitsky
Within reason, Mom. Well, I suppose you deserve it today.
Hannah Solo
Yes.
Rachel Winitsky
Besides, I'm sure your father thought ahead and didn't feed you fat before this, right? Right, Rover?
Megan O'Neill
Wait, dad. Don't say it. Don't say it.
Eric Austin
The end.
Megan O'Neill
No.
Lee Overtree
And now Lee speaks with the author. Okay. So, Matilda, I love your story so much. How did you get the idea for it?
Hannah Solo
I don't know.
Lee Overtree
Do you have a dog?
Hannah Solo
Yes.
Lee Overtree
You do? What's your dog's name?
Hannah Solo
Kira.
Lee Overtree
Kira. What kind of dog?
Hannah Solo
She's a husky lab terrier mix.
Lee Overtree
So. And how old is she? Is she like a puppy or a grown up dog?
Hannah Solo
She's 14.
Lee Overtree
So. Very old.
Hannah Solo
Yes, yes.
Lee Overtree
Did you know her when she was a puppy?
Megan O'Neill
Yes.
Hannah Solo
My parents got her when she was four months old. She's been at our house longer than me.
Lee Overtree
Wow. So do you remember when she was, like, a young puppy and, like, super excited and, like.
Hannah Solo
No, I don't. But my neighbors, they have two puppies. Well, they're not really puppies anymore, but I was around when they were puppies.
Lee Overtree
Oh, cool.
Hannah Solo
So they're still cuckoo.
Lee Overtree
But it's clear that you really understand the psychology of a little puppy from your story.
Hannah Solo
Yes.
Lee Overtree
So you came down to New York City to see the story Pirates.
Megan O'Neill
Yes.
Lee Overtree
Perform your story live. Mm. What was that like?
Hannah Solo
It was really cool. And it was even cooler that I got to be in the story.
Lee Overtree
You got to be in the story. What role did you play? Max. Okay. And when you were on your way down to New York City from Vermont, did you know you were gonna play Max?
Hannah Solo
No.
Peter McNerney
Did you know?
Hannah Solo
I didn't even know Max was a character because it got Peter made him up.
Lee Overtree
Peter made up that character. And so what was it like to see. Cause you're used to hearing the Story Pirates podcast, hearing everybody perform.
Hannah Solo
Yeah. And it sounds like they're moving around and doing all that.
Lee Overtree
Right.
Hannah Solo
But they're really just sitting here on mics.
Lee Overtree
Yeah. And what was it like to see that and learn the truth about what it is to record a podcast?
Hannah Solo
It was really actually kind of cool.
Lee Overtree
Do you feel like now that you've seen the story Pirates kind of like adapt and perform a story the next time you write a story, has anything changed for you for the way that you think of stories or characters or anything?
Hannah Solo
I can see now that, like, characters aren't just a fragment of your imagination. They can be real people.
Lee Overtree
Mm. Amazing. Mathilda, thank you so much for coming to see us. And thank you for letting us perform your story.
Hannah Solo
Yeah, totally.
Lee Overtree
All right, bye.
Eric Austin
Bye.
Hannah Solo
Bye.
Lee Overtree
And now it's time for Story Pirates roll call. Send us your story.
Wishing Wizard
Send us your story.
Julia Adoltz
We read them all.
Megan O'Neill
We read them all.
Julia Adoltz
You know, we love all mindful story Pirate roll call.
Lee Overtree
First up, From Emmy, a 6 year old in Nebraska, we have a story called called Superhero Family and Doors. Now, we all know that the best heroes have incredible arch nemeses. And in this story, the arch nemesis of the superhero family is so good, I have to tell you about it. They are doors. That's right, evil doors that come to life. And then the superhero family has to fight the doors to stop them from taking over the earth. And the doors, get this, have the ability to stop people from closing any door. That's terrible. What about privacy? Superhero families save us. You gotta read this story to find out if they do great work, Emmy. Next up, from 7 year old Elijah in Washington, we have a story called the Blanket that Couldn't be Warm. And honestly, I found this story pretty spooky. It's about a blanket that is upset that people haven't been nice to it. And so it starts turning everyone in the family cold whenever they want to use it. Isn't that kind of spooky? You gotta read this story for yourself. But don't read it in the dark. It's too spooky. But don't worry, it does have a pretty happy ending. Elijah, incredible work, my friend. And finally, from Cooper, a 10 year old in Tennessee, we have a story called Turtle Court. And this episode of Turtle Court is called Please Remove the Automobile. And you may know this, but I love a courtroom drama or comedy. And Cooper's story does not disappoint. This is about a courtroom or a courthouse or actually an entire legal system that is run by turtles. Or at least the judge and the jury are all turtles. There are other animals involved. But my favorite part of any courtroom story is I love when the lawyers get up in front of the jury and they start talking, either doing their opening or closing statements. And actually, Cooper sent us a recording of him reading his story. So I would like to play for you a little bit of it. This is the part where the opening statements happen from the prosecution and the defense. This is so funny. Cooper, take it away.
Megan O'Neill
And so it was time for opening.
Hannah Solo
Statements for the prosecution. And here is what they said. Possums are gross. And here is what the defense said. We are possums.
Lee Overtree
Cooper, I love your sense of humor and I love Turtle Court. Thanks for sending us in your story. To read all of today's roll call stories, just head to storypirates.com that was roll call. And now it's time for you to write us a story. And if you don't know where to start, here's one idea. Take a picture of something normal and every day and then make up a story about what you imagine could be happening in the picture. Kind of like this from Hannah, the author of how to Make Grilled Peaches. Okay, so Hannah, can you describe your picture for me?
Hannah Solo
My grandpa, he, like, has a mannequin head, so he gave me the head. I threw on it, put makeup on it and a wig and called it Susan.
Lee Overtree
Got it. It's a picture of a mannequin head with a pink wig and it's named Susan. So what's your idea of what could be happening in the picture?
Hannah Solo
Okay, so basically it goes out and then it finds a mannequin body in Times Square and then it gets married and then it, like, goes on the mannequin body and just walks around.
Lee Overtree
You see, listeners, sometimes writing a story is about finding an image that inspires you. Grown ups can submit stories and if you want the photos that inspire them@storypirates.com and remember, we respond to every single story we receive. That's it for today's episode. Thanks for listening and a big thanks to today's authors, Hannah and Matilda. We'll be back next week with another episode. Until then, stay creative and stay. The Story Pirates podcast is a production of Story Pirate Studios, executive produced by Lee Overtree and Benjamin Salka. Peter McNerney
Hey, Lee. What's up?
Lee Overtree
Hey, would you mind feeding the sand dollar? I'm too busy working on next week's episode.
Peter McNerney
Sure. That sounds really cute. I'll do it.
Lee Overtree
Thanks a million, buddy.
Peter McNerney
Uh, what do I feed him?
Lee Overtree
You know, sand dollar food.
Peter McNerney
Ah, this is kind of embarrassing, but I don't really know what sand dollars eat.
Lee Overtree
Oh, well. Well, there's a few things you can feed them. Just, you know, whichever of these you have around.
Peter McNerney
Like what?
Lee Overtree
Crustacean larva, Crust Who?
Megan O'Neill
What, what?
Lee Overtree
Or if you don't have any crustacean larva around, then you can feed it a tiny copepod.
Peter McNerney
A whatpod?
Lee Overtree
You know, a copepod, like plankton, diatoms, algae or kelp.
Peter McNerney
Oh. Oh, I see.
Lee Overtree
Any of that will do. Just, you know, whatever you already have around.
Peter McNerney
Well, I'm not sure I have any of those.
Lee Overtree
Or, of course you could feed a sand dollar dead particulate organic material.
Peter McNerney
Where on earth am I gonna find that?
Lee Overtree
All right, thanks, Peter. Gotta go.
Wishing Wizard
Wait.
Peter McNerney
He's gone. Um. Sand dollar.
Megan O'Neill
Yes, Daddy.
Peter McNerney
Peter, we're going for peanut butter smoothies.
Megan O'Neill
Yay. I'm a sand dollar.
Story Pirates Podcast: "How to Make Grilled Peaches/Peanut Butter Smoothies" (Feat. Hannah Solow) – December 12, 2024
The latest episode of the award-winning Story Pirates podcast brings a delightful blend of creativity, humor, and heartwarming moments. Titled "How to Make Grilled Peaches/Peanut Butter Smoothies (feat. Hannah Solo)," this episode features captivating storytelling by young authors, engaging sketch comedy, original songs, and an unexpected magical twist with a special guest appearance by comedian and actor Hannah Solo. Below is a detailed summary capturing all the key points, discussions, insights, and conclusions from the episode.
Introduction to the Adventure
The episode kicks off with host Lee Overtree introducing a whimsical scenario: the Story Pirates stumble upon a magical bottle containing a wishing wizard, leading them into a classic three-wishes conundrum. This segment sets the stage for a blend of improvisational comedy and imaginative storytelling.
Lee Overtree [00:01]: "Today's episode, the Story Pirates enter into a classic three wishes situation with the help of a magical bottle that contains, you guessed it, a wishing wizard."
Developing the Plot on "Good Morning Local Town"
The Story Pirates perform a comedic sketch titled "How to Make Grilled Peaches" on the fictional morning show "Good Morning Local Town." The sketch humorously depicts their attempts to cook grilled peaches using a "vampire grill," leading to a series of slapstick mishaps, including an ill-timed 12-hour commercial break and interactions with a demon-avoiding store.
Key Moments:
Vampire Grill Mishap: The introduction of the vampire grill by guest Julia Adoltz adds a supernatural twist.
Julia Adoltz [05:58]: "I never go anywhere without my vampire grill. Or I should say without a vampire that owns a grill. Oh, Vlad the pale."
Demonstrating Creative Problem-Solving: The team's inventive (and humorous) solutions, like using flower goggles to identify the demon avoidance store, showcase their creative flair.
Julia Adoltz [09:13]: "We just take these flowers and turn them into goggles like this."
Encounter with the Wishing Wizard
As the sketch concludes, the Story Pirates discover the wishing bottle they've been teasing. Upon flipping and tapping the bottle, the Wishing Wizard emerges with unexpected demands: instead of granting wishes to the pirates, the wizard requires them to fulfill its own three wishes.
Notable Interaction:
Wishing Wizard [13:58]: "I'm a magical wizard from deep in the sea, and now you will grant to me these wishes three."
This twist flips the traditional wish-granting dynamic, introducing a humorous conflict that drives the episode's central plot.
First Two Wishes: Tuna Sandwich and Glass of Water
The pirates undertake the task of fulfilling the wizard's first two straightforward wishes:
Rachel Winitsky takes the lead in preparing the tuna sandwich, showcasing her resourcefulness.
Rachel Winitsky [20:27]: "Time to do a little bit of this and a little bit of that. And voila. Wishing wizard, here is your tuna sandwich with mustard and cheese."
The preparation of the glass of water is handled with Rachel's characteristic humor, tying back to her fictional soda company, Rachel Cola.
Rachel Winitsky [21:04]: "What I'm trying to say is, her wish is my wishing wizard. Here's your water, no ice, tall glass."
The Challenging Third Wish: $30
The real test comes with the wizard's third wish: $30. The pirates realize that obtaining physical cash is not as straightforward, leading to a creative and humorous resolution.
Wishing Wizard [16:12]: "$30. This is story Pirate."
Ultimately, Rachel Winitsky devises an ingenious plan to interpret the wish literally by providing "Sand Dollars," a species of sea urchins, thus fulfilling the wizard's unspecified requirement.
Rachel Winitsky [23:35]: "Here's 30 of them. Hello. We're Sand Dollars. Are you our mama? We love. We're Sand Dollars."
The wizard happily accepts the Sand Dollars, satisfied with the pirates' cleverness, and returns to the bottle, concluding this magical encounter.
