Together we will unpack the nuances of what it really means to be a conscious consumer and find more joy in what we have right now. So grab your tea, your coffee, or whatever floats your boat and join us in the conversation. Go. Yay. Good morning, hello, good afternoon, wherever you're at. Welcome. Welcome back to another podcast. We recently talked about wish lists, how to make one, what to do now that you have one. And we've also spoken about spring trends with the change of the season. So today we're talking about sort of how we manage our wish list with trends and the trends that we are glad we bought, the trends that we didn't buy, and maybe even a little bit the ones that we've purchased and maybe kind of regret it. So. Yes, let's get into it.
Christina
Let's get into it.
Alyssa
There's always a couple in the spring. Spring for me, I don't know, it's. It's usually one where I bypass trends. Anyway. I don't get as excited about spring trends. You.
Christina
Yeah, I agree. And because the season is so short that it just. At least here in Toronto, it's like spring lasts for like five minutes, and then it goes straight into the humidity and heat. So it's a very, very small window of actually wearing your sort of transitional spring items.
Alyssa
Items. Yeah, I.
Christina
You know what?
Alyssa
I.
Christina
The leather jacket weather is, like two days long. It's very small. Yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
Because then it gets super hot.
Christina
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
Here, actually, here in Europe and Italy, they've got a nice long spring, which is really cool.
Christina
Yes.
Alyssa
I think the shoulder seasons are my favorite.
Christina
I think the shoulder seasons.
Alyssa
Yes, I call them shoulder seasons. Does no one else.
Christina
I've heard that before. I've never heard that. Oh, my God.
Alyssa
Maybe it's just made it up. Shoulder. Yeah. Right. Because it's like not winter and. Or it's just shoulders. It's like almost. You're almost there, you know?
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
There are a couple. I mean, I mean, you've got. I feel like you've got your finger on the pulse of. Of trends, Christina. Especially the ones that are like the cool, like, online ones.
Christina
Yeah, we talked about. Yeah. Like, we Talked about the 2025 trends in a previous episode not too long ago. But I feel like there's some trends that are kind of coming back around that haven't been talked about. Like the one I'm seeing a lot are those deck shoes.
Alyssa
Those are big. Everyone's wearing them in Italy.
Christina
Yacht wear. Oh really? Yeah, really. Oh my God. That takes me back to like grade seven and eight. I feel like I wore some of those non stop.
Alyssa
Really.
Christina
But yeah, but it's like looking back, I'm like, this is not nautical, is not my style. I don't know. I. Yeah. So I feel like that's a shoe I'm going to be seeing a lot that I'm happy to not be influenced by. Whereas like last year, and I think this is a nice kind of thing to know. It's like what's for you and what's not and like what's a hundred percent not for you. And I do think some things can eventually grow on you. Like for example, I hated the dad sneaker when it first came out. And then you know, a couple years later I did end up getting it. But like last year the mesh flats were really big and I actually really liked them. I liked them right away. Like there were some that felt like they wouldn't be as nice quality or that they would like fall apart quicker than others. But I did end up getting that trend and it's something that I'm going to continue to wear when we can wear cute shoes again, like when our toes.
Alyssa
Hopefully soon.
Christina
But I feel like that aligns with my style. Whereas like the deck shoe that kind of like slip on loafer yacht vibe is just not. I don't, I just don't see it. So I. It's nice to just be like, that's nice that it's trending and it's cool that I'm seeing it a lot. But thanks but no thanks.
Alyssa
It's like a little too preppy for you.
Christina
Yeah. Oh yeah, yeah. Big time. Yeah.
Alyssa
Because I can't.
Christina
You've got.
Alyssa
Do you have regular loafers?
Christina
I do, but I don't. Yeah, I don't really reach for them that much. I find loafers are tough. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
I'm trying to think of your, your like outfits that stand out in my head and I, I feel like the loafers don't pop up as often, so. And that's a similar silhouette, it's a similar visual weight. So yes, that is a trend that I will be missing. Also I think it could be interesting to talk about like if you like what it does to an outfit, maybe what do you have in your closet in stead or like, that you could use. That could give you the same look. So I think in terms of vibe, what it adds is, as you said, Christina, that kind of nautical prep vibe. And I think you could. Instead of using. Injecting that vibe via a shoe, you could wear a stripe and see how that goes. Or even just throw something around your shoulders and see. Or even, like, a pair of Bermudas would probably replace that because it's kind of like an awkward. I see those shoes as, like, just being. Adding a little bit of awkwardness to an outfit, but, like, could be a cool sense of awkward. So you could try, like, a short with a sweater if you want to hit that sort of nautical note. And then in terms of visual weight, they're heavy. So if you already own loafers.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Try. Try wearing your loafer in place of where you would want that shoe. Or, like, I know some people are wearing that shoe with, like. I've seen them with really cool, colorful socks, and I love that look.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Very fun.
Christina
With loafers, you mean?
Alyssa
Yeah, well, with the. With the. With the boat.
Christina
Oh, yeah.
Alyssa
Also. And I think that's really neat. Yeah. But, like, you can have. You can achieve that. That same effect with a loafer with a colorful sock. Right. Which we saw quite successfully. So think about. I would say that shoe. It's about weight and vibe. So, yeah, if you're. If you're into it, try those first. Yeah, that's. That's what I'm gonna do, at least, because it is one that kind of interests me, because I have a bit more of that, like, kind of preppy, but I don't think it's necessary. I think I'd rather buy another loafer than that shoe or another ballet flat than that shoe. That's what I would do.
Christina
Did you find your perfect pair of loafers?
Alyssa
No. I mean, the ones I have are kind of perfect. The Ma Parsons ones I have say I love those. But, like, it's like, then if I really like them, which I do, maybe I get them in a different color or a different texture or something. You know, that's. That's what I would do.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
What else? I feel like plaid is having a moment, even though it's spring.
Christina
Oh, is it?
Alyssa
Was I. I think so.
Christina
I was. You're seeing it a lot in the street.
Alyssa
Yes. And even in vintage stores, there's big plaid sections.
Christina
Actually, you know, that's true. That was. That was a trend. That was a trend. The mixing patterns, like mixing stripes with plaid or like, just plaid in general? Yeah, it was. It was a trend for 2020.
Alyssa
We talked about that. Yeah.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
And I think it's just kind of interesting because it's spring, so we don't see that often for spring.
Christina
Yeah. It makes me think of fall.
Alyssa
Yes.
Christina
Very autumn. There's, like, a window to wear plaid, at least in my life. Like, I'm thinking of, like, a check blazer or something. Yes, that. Yeah, it's an autumnal vibe for me.
Alyssa
Yeah. You don't. So you won't be wearing plaid this spring?
Christina
No. And I've never.
Alyssa
You own anything plaid?
Christina
Yeah, I have the one like Anita. Anita Bing blazer.
Alyssa
The blazer. Okay.
Christina
Yeah, I think I'm. Yeah, I'm going to. It's going to go now. I can sign it. We're finally decluttering. Wow.
Alyssa
Okay.
Christina
It's been a while. I got to do my quarterly declutter, so I think it's. I think it's time. I never reach for it. I never do. But I. What's held me back about that blazer for so many years is one. I really like the fit. It's a very kind of, like, it fits well. It's oversized enough, but not swimming, so it's still, like, nice and tailored. What. What other. The other thing that holds me back about that blazer is I feel like if I bought something new, it wouldn't be made as well or it would be like, you know.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
Just the construction of something. Even five years ago, you. There's such a difference. It's wild. It's wild. And that kind of holds me back on it. And then the other thing that holds me back is as soon as I get rid of it, I'm going to be like, ah, I really want a plaid blazer, but when I have it, I literally never reach for it or when I try to style it, I take it off.
Alyssa
So.
Christina
So it's just. Just cut the cord, baby.
Alyssa
That's right. You won't miss it.
Christina
No, I don't think so. I mean, in my mind, there's like, a fear that I will, but that's just a little bit of scarcity. And we can.
Alyssa
We can over get over that. What is it that you don't like about it?
Christina
I think it's just too pale. I don't know. Let me go get it. Hold on.
Alyssa
Yeah. Show and tell. Show and tell. Ooh. Oh, shoot. It's a stronger plaid than I was thinking of.
Christina
We styled it, remember?
Alyssa
We.
Christina
One of our very first collab Videos. We did.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
And I liked it. I just still. I don't know. It's like, too light or something. I'm not sure.
Alyssa
You know, I think this print is too small for you. I think it's too much small print and that. It's too big.
Christina
Really?
Alyssa
You think I need a bigger print? Well, no, not necessarily a bigger print, but I think because it's. So. Not only is it houndst, it's also a houndstooth plaid. There's, like. There's a lot happening in this blazer, which I think is underestimated, and I think that's why. No, you're not a print person, and this is like a double whammy print.
Christina
Yeah. So it's like. I don't know.
Alyssa
Yeah, let's see.
Christina
So, I mean, that's cool. I could, like. I have something that could participate in the trends. I don't know.
Alyssa
Yeah. Yeah. It's not.
Christina
It's off, right? Yeah.
Alyssa
100.
Christina
Something weird about it. It's the prince beautiful blazer. It's beautifully soft. It's. It's very nicely. It's, like, very well made. She doesn't make this blazer anymore either, so. But, yeah, I'm over it. I don't know.
Alyssa
It's. It's too.
Christina
And I love the blue and yellow in here, but.
Alyssa
Yeah. And even the tan is great because you've got. Is that, like, a tan or is it yellow? That must be yellow.
Christina
It's like a mustardy yellow.
Alyssa
Yeah. Cool. It's. It's. Oh, yeah. No, it's a great blazer. It is a great blazer, but I think it's the. Yeah, for sure. The print is too busy. Interesting choice to do houndstooth and plaid. Like, that's. That's a lot.
Christina
Oh, I see what you're saying.
Alyssa
Visually. Do you see what I mean? Like, the lines are made of houndstooth, so it's like you. You can't decide what. What's interesting about it. There's too much.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
In my opinion. Okay. This is so much better.
Christina
So it's something that I did buy, but it. That was like. I bought that in, like, 2017 or, like, it's. It's. I've had it for a long time, so.
Alyssa
Was it a trend when you bought it?
Christina
I think so. Yeah, it was, but. But, yeah, it. I'm pretty sure it was, but it, like, I think I still bought it. Like, bought it later. I find whenever. I just don't. I don't buy into trends immediately. Um, I do buy them, but, like, it takes me a bit. Yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
Time to get into them. Okay. Yeah. Plaid. I mean, that one's simple. You probably already have it in your closet. Style it for spring with, like, something short, like a cute skirt or even, like, a midi. Like, a midi denim skirt would be cool. And a pair of sneakers or ballet flats. Or if you've got, like, a little plaid skirt, you could do with a blouse or a tee. Just like. I would do, like, a simple tee. That would be really fun.
Christina
I have one that I feel like it's been around for a few years now, so we'll see if it trends into this year. But it's one that I'm so glad that I did not buy. And that's a denim skirt.
Alyssa
Remember the denim skirt? Yes. But wait, which kind?
Christina
The long one. The maxis. Like, they've been hot, hot, hot for the past few years, and that's one that, like, I really like it when I see it on other people.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
I feel like I've seen some very chic ways of actually styling it, but to me, it just takes me back to, like, grade eight.
Alyssa
Did you wear one when you were in grade eight?
Christina
I had one. Yeah. I did have one. Yeah. Yeah. So it's interesting how, like, some trends, people love them or people hate them, but it's sometimes a lot of it has to do with just, like, what you associate with that garment, you know?
Alyssa
Yeah. Oh, my God. That's so funny. I bought one. I thrifted one.
Christina
You did?
Alyssa
Yes. I don't have it with me because I'm in Switzerland. Like, I was in Pescara with my parents, and it was totally. It wasn't on my list. But I've been attracted. I will try. I've tried so often to buy a denim skirt, but, like, it's always a pencil skirt, and then I can't move in it. I'm like, why am I wearing. I would. Why? But this one was a little bit big on me, and I actually liked that because I tried it on, and it's like, I wear it at the hip, so it's, like, kind of slouchy, and it reminds me of a good pair of jeans, like, soft and slouchy. And it's a light denim. And I wore it around the other day with sneakers and a sweater, and I really liked it.
Christina
Oh, nice.
Alyssa
It's a midi length.
Christina
Okay. I just feel like you have the. You have the height to carry it. I feel like maybe. I think. I don't know. I feel like the. I get very truncated And I feel like for me, it's just a lot of fabric.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
And I could almost hear the sound or, like, feel it, like, flopping around as I try to walk, you know, like. Like I'm kicking it. Just.
Alyssa
Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I get that. I get that.
Christina
So. And it's a bit like. Yeah. I don't know, for me it can go into a little, like, country western a little too quickly sometimes.
Alyssa
Yes. Yeah, that too, totally.
Christina
But, yeah, I'd love to see how you style that. So I'm looking forward to an upcoming YouTube video.
Alyssa
Yes. It's two. It should be up in two weeks. Yeah, I know. I couldn't believe it. It was totally unplanned, but.
Christina
Wow. Oh, my God. I'm so. I'm so curious.
Alyssa
Me too. But, like, now that the weather' getting good, it's like, like, that's a good spring piece that in Canada you'd probably wear for like, two days.
Christina
Maybe.
Alyssa
Maybe you'd wear in the summer. But anyway.
Christina
Yeah. Speaking of that, I feel like there's another one that I'm glad I didn't buy, and that is the. The white peasant skirts. They were everywhere.
Alyssa
Yes.
Christina
Last summer. And I feel like they're going to make a resurgence this year. I just. I love to love it. I love to see it on other people, but I have like a skirt, like a cotton poplin skirt like that. It's like a navy kind of a line with a slit. And I've just tried to make. I just. I can't. I can't do. I'm not. I can't do. I don't know. I don't do skirts.
Alyssa
No. Yeah. I can't really see. Yeah.
Christina
So, yeah, I've tried to make that one work, but.
Alyssa
When did you buy the navy? Was that recent?
Christina
A couple years ago? No, it's. I've had it for a few years now. Yeah.
Alyssa
Okay, so it's like a similar silhouette.
Christina
Yeah. And I love the idea of like that. A line summer vibe skirt with like a flip flop or a ballet flat or even a mesh flat and then like a tube top or something. I think that's so. Just cute and effortless. Yeah. But no.
Alyssa
How long is it?
Christina
It's maxi.
Alyssa
Oh, it is maxi.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
You know what it is? It's like. I think it's too much structure on the bottom half. Like.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
The denim. Yeah, I think so.
Christina
The denim or the.
Alyssa
It's like. Sorry, both. Because they're both in. They're kind of similar. Right. Like a denim maxi Is almost like a, you're putting like a giant rectangle on your bottom half. And then this one is like a strong a line. I think.
Christina
Yes.
Alyssa
You need to have like this kind of angular, like architectural.
Christina
I need a pant leg. Is like what I need.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
Ye.
Alyssa
I've never seen you.
Christina
Yeah. The, the denim skirt, it was like. If it was a pair of wide leg jeans. Great, give it to me. Or the a line skirt. If it like the poplin skirt. If it was a pair of like summer, summertime cotton.
Alyssa
Like a wide leg.
Christina
Like a wide leg. 100. But it's weird. As soon as, like as soon as I lose the pant leg, it's over.
Alyssa
So weird. Even dresses, right?
Christina
Yeah, dresses are tough for me.
Alyssa
I still don't wore a dress.
Christina
I wore. I had this, like, I have this kind of tube. It's a beautiful brown tube midi dress. So it's more form fitting. I think the neckline is good. That one I've worn but. And I feel better in like a dress like that. I think it's just, I need like the sleek. Yeah. So any of those, like more voluminous trends? I just can't.
Alyssa
Don't work.
Christina
They don't work.
Alyssa
Got it, Got it. I'm trying to think of what else, what have I passed on? I didn't buy the mesh flats.
Christina
Again.
Alyssa
That's like footwear is. Yeah. I would have just bought another regular ballet flat. What else? I'm trying to think of what else is trending.
Christina
It doesn't have to be a trend. It could just be something that was on your wish list. That.
Alyssa
Right. That I didn't buy. Gosh. I don't remember. Because I take them off as soon as I'm like, oh, f this. So I see. Isn't that crazy? Like, I don't even think of, I can't even think of them because they weren't even that important.
Christina
Obviously.
Alyssa
I have, I wrote down Shearling Bomber and I'm looking at that now. I know that could be cool. But I, I, I'm looking at it now and like I'm, I don't think.
Christina
Do you have a picture of it?
Alyssa
No, I just wrote it down like just, you know, like the typical, like sort of black, I think because I saw a girl wearing one the other day and I was like, oh, she looks so good. So I put it on my list and now already I'm just like, I don't think it's necessary.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
You know, there was a little. I know. Like, I feel like the Tennis. Tennis aesthetic is coming back big time.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
And I love, I love the little knit polos. Like.
Christina
Oh, I think they're not so cute.
Alyssa
No, it's way too preppy for you. But I love them and, but I haven't. I didn't. And see, I didn't buy into that. And I even tried one on at a vintage store and I didn't buy it and I'm happy I didn't buy it. Like, I think I have enough.
Christina
I think you like the mini skirt. So would you do like a tennis skirt?
Alyssa
Exactly. Yeah. Like, that appeals to me more. The little like knife pleat or like a cheerleader esque kind of skirt. Yeah, that's how I would incorporate. That's how I would incorporate that trend. Yeah.
Christina
But is there anything you ever bought that you thought you would love and it was just like.
Alyssa
Oh, my gosh.
Christina
No.
Alyssa
A big no. Yes. I'm almost sure of it. Yes. I bought this like metallic vintage. It was like a lame, like a silver lame halter, very Halston inspired. It was like €10. And I was enamored by it. And I, and I even like, I tried it on sort of over my outfit at the market and I thought, oh, this is so great for, you know, whenever going out. And it was metallic, which is a classic, but also kind of trending. Like, I think silver is having a moment. And I, I was like, no, no, this is not. I don't know. I tried it on. The length was off, the silhouette was off, which is odd because normally a halter dress, it was like, it just didn't, it really didn't work. And that was a disappointment. But that was the most recent one. Oh, I have one. A pair of gunmetal cowboy boots. I bought those. They were. Yeah. Secondhand. And I thought I would wear them so much more. Right. Like, they have attitude. I love the structure. They're a great heel. You can walk in them forever. And I almost, I almost never wore them.
Christina
Did you get rid of them?
Alyssa
So, yeah, and actually a woman in my community wanted them because we have a little swap within our community and I think I had brought them in at home in a move and my mom accidentally sent them away and decluttered them.
Christina
Oh, no.
Alyssa
I was so sad. Yeah. So that was the demise of those boots.
Christina
I don't see you in cowboy boots.
Alyssa
No way.
Christina
No, no, no. Like, I feel like unless you were going to like a, like a part, like a themed party, that's like the.
Alyssa
Only time I can see. Probably.
Christina
Yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
But. And that they were a big. I remember they were a big trend when I bought them, but I found them secondhand. So I was like, great. Like something trending metallic. That all the things.
Christina
The barn jacket. Remember the barn coats? And now I feel like we're moving into everyone wanting like a barber. Like a barber style coat. Yeah, but the barn. The barn style jackets, those were super hot, like fall. I feel like they'll come back around for the transitional weather now, but. And that's something that's easily thriftable. And I think it's super classic and fun, but it's just not a silhouette. Like, it's a silhouette that I liked. I like it every time I see it on people, but it's just not. I just know it's not. Again, not my vibe. No, like, just something that I'm happy to bypass. Like, I forgot about it as soon as it went on my wish list. Just forgotten about immediately. That's why it took me so long to even get to it. I'm like, huh? Oh, yeah, okay.
Alyssa
Barn jacket. No, yeah, same. It's just a silhouette that I probably wouldn't go for. This is an. Oh, right. Skirt over pants.
Christina
Ah. I mean, that's not some.
Alyssa
That's not even something that we have to buy. But, like, is that even something you would do?
Christina
No, the only. I saw it styled in a really interesting way with like a sheer dress over shorts over, like really cool wide leg. Like almost Bermuda style shorts. I don't know if that would work on me because I feel like those shorts, I have like thicker cabs and stuff, so I just feel like the proportion might look strange. So I am curious. Like, I would try it, I would style it, but I think that looks really, really interesting. But I think it's maybe like, nice for tall people.
Alyssa
Yeah, that's a very tough one to pull off.
Christina
It's kind of.
Alyssa
Yeah, yeah, that's a. That's very. Especially with the bermuda. I wouldn't choose to do it with.
Christina
A bermuda, but it looked really great. But yeah, I feel like that's. It's tough. It's. That's a lot of fabric, a lot of layering. I think it really works when it works. But that's something that. Yeah, definitely. You don't have to buy it, but I think that's one that I'm not going to be. I don't think I would be trying that. I might try it. Like, if I did, it would be like for a styling video. But this is something that. It's more like let's try this in real time and see how it. If we like it or not. As like a experiment. But I just don't see. I don't see myself wearing it all day long as a fit, you know?
Alyssa
Got it. I would do a dress over pants. I wouldn't do a skirt. I feel like that kind of. I don't know. I like it when things. I like vertical lines on my body and I feel like a skirt plus a pant. You can't really appreciate one or the other. So I. But I would do a dress. I actually. I would do like a nice shirt dress, sort of left open.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Over a trouser.
Christina
But I kind of like the. The trousers that almost have like the illusion of a built.
Alyssa
The little panel.
Christina
Yeah, I do like that. So I feel like that's something because it's like you're not quite committing.
Alyssa
No.
Christina
And I feel like you could kind of like wear it down and have it be this kind of interesting, like, dangly piece. But that's something I would wait on if I were to buy into it. I don't. It's not like I'm not, you know, it's not screaming at me. You know, it's kind of like, oh, I like the way this looks, but am I looking for this? I'm not sure. Yeah, it's cool, but also forgettable to me, I guess.
Alyssa
Yes. Oh, that's a good word.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Cool, but forgettable, apparently. Tank tops, I saw that, like, last. Last year, but just like your typical, like, scoop. That. That reminds me of high school. Like. Like a racer back, you know, like the racerback tank with the scoop neck and the sort of moderately thick straps. I mean, to me, that's just like a staple. Like, it's a tank staple. You wear it or you don't. It's a basic. I don't know.
Christina
That's coming up as a trend. How is a tank top a trend? Are you serious?
Alyssa
Yeah. 100.
Christina
Where did you see this? On both.
Alyssa
I saw this on Vogue, but also I remember seeing it last year when I was looking at trends. Or maybe it was in. I think it was. Yeah, I think it was either in a fall video or something like that. I remember seeing this, like, the U scoop shape tank top.
Christina
Oh, my God.
Alyssa
Very, very, like, y2k.ish.
Christina
I just find that hilarious how, like.
Alyssa
It'S a tank top.
Christina
Yeah, exactly. That's such, like the. It's such a staple. Such a basic. The basic of basics. Yeah. Yeah.
Alyssa
This is how, you know, fashion is like Running out of ideas, right?
Christina
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Alyssa
I think like, athleisure is still a thing. Like.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
You know, like the Adidas track pants is still pretty strong. Track jackets is like, jackets is a big one. I probably. I probably wouldn't be participating in that. I'm not like a huge. When I do sporty, it's more like American sport. So like a denim, like a button up shirt or something like that with that kind of thing. It's not like actual athleisure sport. And to be honest, you. Yeah, you've done. You have.
Christina
Yeah. Sporty is like one of my words, though. That's like something that I always have. So I love, like the idea of mixing kind of like high and low and whether it be like sneakers or like a track pant or like a cool bomber jacket or something that's like.
Alyssa
Yeah, that's cool.
Christina
I love it.
Alyssa
Yeah, that's very you. That's so. Yeah, that's like really you. I. To be honest, if I've been starting to wear my leggings.
Christina
Oh, yeah.
Alyssa
Life. Like, I think. I don't know if I think I've. I've been seeing them a lot more like people just wearing leggings without even something long. You know, like we all used to think, oh, we have to wear and like, look, it depends. Like, I'm not going to wear them in a super casual way, but I like that silhouette.
Christina
So what do you style it with?
Alyssa
So I'll do it with honestly, just a little like a sweater. A sweater. But I will do my long coat over top. So I mean, sorry, not like a long. Just not like a long shirt. But I'll definitely do a long coat.
Christina
Yeah. Yeah. We're not going to like the layered tank tops or whatever. I did that all the time in like 2005. Yeah, I love that.
Alyssa
That's so good.
Christina
A long tank top to try to. Yeah.
Alyssa
You like cut. Then you like cut the bottom of one to like do a fold.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Did you ever do that?
Christina
And then the stinky ass ballet flats. Yeah.
Alyssa
Oh, my gosh. But yeah, no. So the skinny, like a legging or. That's actually one that I'm like happy to participate in.
Christina
I think I have one that I bought into a few years ago and that I kind of regret and it's the straw bag.
Alyssa
Oh, really? Straw bags are classic.
Christina
I know.
Alyssa
Not really. You. Not your classic. Wait, what kind of straw bag? I don't remember.
Christina
It's like this like, kaas tote that I got and it's like the rattan kind of style. Yeah. I thought I would just wear that all the time, and I'd be like, let's go on these little picnics, and let's get flowers, and it's so cute. And I'm gonna put my baguette in here and. Oh, my God. But, yeah, I got the. I ended up getting a weave bag, but it's made of leather, and I feel like it kind of gave me the texture that I wanted and, like, the durability and that kind of summery vibe. But, yeah, I don't. I'm not a rattan basket bag, girly. I guess. Yeah.
Alyssa
I don't see.
Christina
But they do come back every summer.
Alyssa
They do get one. Yes. I love mine. I wore it way more than what I thought, actually.
Christina
Oh, nice.
Alyssa
I was shocked. Yeah, I was. I got it because I was like, it's a summer. Mine's like a tote. It's a tote with leather straps. It's from Suzanne. I'm obsessed. And I remember thinking, oh, I'll just. I'll have it with me when I need to just throw stuff in and bring it to the beach. But it was, like, my everyday bag every day. I wore it all the time. And I'm still. I didn't. It's not with me now. And I'm kind of sad because I would start. I would have started to wear it, like, almost in the next few weeks.
Christina
Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that's one that interest. One that didn't end up working out. Interesting. I don't know.
Alyssa
Are your. Am I looking at the wrong trend lists? Because these are so vague. Here I have tomato, tomato, fruity red for spring. I mean, red was really big, but, like, this seems so random. Oh.
Christina
So they're changing up the shade of the shade of red. So. Okay, so here we go.
Alyssa
Red.
Christina
Yeah. So we had kind of like a cherry red sweater vibe last year. Then we went into burgundy for fall because obviously, groundbreaking. So now we're doing the tomato red. Okay.
Alyssa
But tomato. This was a big one for last summer, too. The tomato red.
Christina
Was it.
Alyssa
I remember, like, tomato girl summer. Yes. That was huge.
Christina
Oh, okay. I don't know where I was for that.
Alyssa
Yeah, yeah. That's why I'm like, is this still a thing? Yes. Sorry. The bright red was a big one last summer.
Christina
I do feel like trends, we say that they do rise and fall quickly, but I still think they. They hang around for a few years. Like, I feel like the mesh flats will be back. And those were actually around for maybe a couple. Maybe like two or three years. Two years probably. And I still feel like they'll be back this summer. I think the white skirt will be back. Like, it kind of hangs around for a little bit.
Alyssa
Tomato. Would you participate? You've got some red.
Christina
I do. I keep getting that. People say it's the wrong red. I'm like, okay, I don't know, whatever. But it's like, wear more color. No, this is the wrong color. So I'm just gonna wear what I like. So. But it's more. It's like a. It's a cardigan. I find it's a little too pre. It feels too prep when I wear it. And I think, honestly, like, with all the working out I do and stuff, it's. It doesn't look right because I'm. I have, like, developed shoulders and arms now to me. It doesn't feel like I'm filling it out too much. It doesn't feel, like, dainty to me. And this cardigan is, like, very dainty. I feel like it would look good on you. Maybe next time you come Toronto, you can try. But I actually. I kind of wear it as, like a belt wearing. So I've worn it, like, over my shoulders for like a pop. It's like, thin enough that you can almost put it through a belt loop. And I do like that. So that's how I use it. And I kind of. And I like it that way.
Alyssa
Cool. I like that.
Christina
But close to my face and actually wearing it. No. And what I realized too is I'm not a cardigan person at all. Like, I just don't. I don't. I don't like a. I don't like a cardigan. I'm not really a sweater person either.
Alyssa
Yeah. I don't see you wearing knitwear often.
Christina
No, like, I'm just. I'm layer. It's always a tank top. So I think actually I'm planning on doing my spring wardrobe switch over and closet declutter, like, every time I do my kind of mini capsules or like, seasonal capsules, I'll bring in stuff that I am planning on, like my more seasonal stuff. And I always also declutter at that time. And I think I'm gonna get rid of some knitwear, like, probably have four key pieces, and I just don't. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like a. Nice to have you always. Yeah, like. Well, you're a knitwear all the time. I can see. Are you wearing a vest?
Alyssa
Yes.
Christina
Oh, cool.
Alyssa
It's Very Swiss. I dressed for my.
Christina
Oh, yeah, yeah, There you go.
Alyssa
It feels very Swiss.
Christina
Yeah. Or is that French? I know, well. Swiss. French. Yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
Interesting. But you had. Did you not. Did you buy red socks and try that out?
Christina
I. I do like the red sock. Yeah, yeah. They're fun. I like colorful sock. That's like a thing. I'm down with that. Yeah, Yeah.
Alyssa
I like a textured sock. Oh. Another trend I think is definitely those little like lacy, delicate socks.
Christina
Oh, like the dolly socks.
Alyssa
Yes.
Christina
Yeah, no, no, thanks. Yeah, big time. Big time.
Alyssa
I.
Christina
Please enjoy if you do. But no.
Alyssa
Yeah, definitely not. You. Like, we've established that you. The skirts are. No cardigans or. No, clearly we're in the like romantic frillies. Just like not also falls under that category. Yeah, I. I love them. Not the ones with the little ruffles. I don't like those. But I do love the little lace socket. Like I would wear that with a loafer and a cut off denim or something. Like. Like a trout. Like my denim.
Christina
Yeah, I like like a textured sock. The way you're describing that. Or like a. Like a legging or something that you used to layer. Like I've done layering where I'd wear like ripped jeans and then do like a cool pair of under. It's the only time I'll wear like stockings or pantyhose or whatever. If they have like an interesting. If I'm using it as a tool. Not because I'm not gonna wear dress. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
No, I like that. I would. I don't have a pair of those little socks, but I definitely. I don't know that I would skip over that one. I would maybe. Maybe participate. Buy one pair.
Christina
Ah, cool. Yeah, yeah, do it.
Alyssa
I think that's a pretty solid list, Christina.
Christina
Yeah, I'm glad I didn't buy some of these things.
Alyssa
Yeah, I know. I think. You know what though? Looking back, I feel like it's. I mean, mistakes, quote unquote. I made some solid. Some solid mistakes there. So it's good to reflect.
Christina
We learned from them. Yeah. And then some things I'm like super stoked that I bought. So it's very fluid and it is. Yeah.
Alyssa
Can't always get it right. Even with a list with a wish list, you know?
Christina
Yeah.

Sustain This! Podcast Episode Summary
Episode Title: Let's Talk Style Trends We're Glad We DIDN'T Buy (Spring 2025 Trends & More!)
Release Date: April 8, 2025
Hosts: Alyssa Beltempo, Signe Hansen, and Christina Mychas
In this engaging episode of Sustain This!, hosts Alyssa Beltempo, Christina Mychas, and Signe Hansen delve into the realm of spring 2025 fashion trends. They explore which trends they resisted adding to their wardrobes, the reasons behind these decisions, and discuss alternative styling methods to achieve similar looks without compromising their commitment to sustainable and intentional fashion.
The conversation kicks off with the trio reflecting on their previous discussions about wish lists and spring trends. They emphasize the importance of discerning which trends align with their personal styles and sustainable values.
Christina:
"Let's talk about how we manage our wish list with trends and the trends that we are glad we didn't buy."
[00:43]
Christina expresses relief over not purchasing deck shoes, citing their overly nautical and preppy vibe, which doesn't resonate with her personal style.
Christina:
"I feel like that's a shoe I'm going to be seeing a lot that I'm happy to not be influenced by."
[03:04]
Alyssa adds that while deck shoes are popular in places like Italy, they don't suit her aesthetic either. They discuss alternatives like colorful socks with loafers to achieve a similar playful vibe without the commitment to deck shoes.
Alyssa:
"You can achieve that same effect with a loafer and a colorful sock."
[05:58]
Christina discusses her decision to declutter a houndstooth plaid blazer, highlighting its overcomplicated pattern and how it doesn't fit her style despite its high quality.
Christina:
"It's too pale and too busy with the houndstooth and plaid patterns combined."
[09:30]
Alyssa concurs, noting that the intricate patterns make the blazer visually overwhelming.
Alyssa:
"There's too much happening in this blazer, making it hard to appreciate."
[10:02]
Christina explains her reluctance to embrace denim maxi skirts, associating them with her school days and feeling uncomfortable with the voluminous fabric.
Christina:
"It just takes me back to grade eight, and the fabric feels too much for me."
[12:36]
Similarly, she avoids white peasant skirts despite their popularity, finding skirts generally unappealing.
Christina:
"I can't do skirts. The white peasant skirts just aren't for me."
[15:36]
Alyssa suggests that while these items are trending, alternative pieces like a cotton poplin skirt might offer a similar aesthetic without the need to follow the exact trend.
Alyssa:
"Style it for spring with something short, like a cute skirt or a midi denim skirt."
[15:46]
Alyssa shares her decision to skip mesh flats, preferring regular ballet flats. Christina echoes this sentiment, mentioning her switch to a woven leather tote for durability and style.
Alyssa:
"I didn't buy into mesh flats and opted for more traditional footwear."
[30:12]
Barn jackets are also dismissed by Christina as not fitting her silhouette preferences, despite their popularity in fall fashion.
Christina:
"It's a silhouette I like seeing on others, but it's just not my vibe."
[22:52]
Alyssa recounts her purchase of a metallic vintage halter dress inspired by Halston. Despite its trendy appearance, she found the fit and silhouette unflattering, leading to regret.
Alyssa:
"I tried it on and the silhouette was off. It was a disappointment."
[20:06]
Another regretful purchase was a pair of gunmetal cowboy boots bought secondhand. Although she admired their structure and heel, Alyssa rarely wore them, ultimately passing them on through a community swap.
Alyssa:
"I almost never wore them, so I had to let them go."
[21:35]
To maintain a fashionable edge without succumbing to fleeting trends, the hosts suggest alternative styling approaches:
Loafers with Colorful Socks: Alyssa recommends pairing loafers with vibrant socks to introduce interest without adopting deck shoes.
Alyssa:
"You can achieve that same effect with a loafer and a colorful sock."
[06:08]
Layering for Barn Jackets: Christina considers experimenting with layering a sheer dress over shorts and wide-leg Bermudas to modernize the barn jacket trend.
Christina:
"I would try it for a styling video, but I don't see myself wearing it daily."
[23:58]
Shearling Bomber Jacket as an Alternative: Though Alyssa notes interest in shearling bombers, she ultimately hesitates, reflecting on maintaining a cohesive style.
Alyssa:
"I'm looking at a shearling bomber, but I don't think it's necessary."
[18:08]
The hosts emphasize the importance of personal style over blindly following trends. They acknowledge that while some trends may seem appealing initially, true satisfaction comes from wearing what genuinely resonates with them.
Christina:
"Sometimes a trend may grow on you, but for the most part, I stick to what feels right."
[03:57]
Alyssa highlights the value of making thoughtful clothing choices and decluttering items that no longer serve their purpose or align with their style.
Alyssa:
"It's good to reflect on our choices and learn from them to cultivate a more intentional wardrobe."
[36:13]
In wrapping up, Alyssa, Christina, and Signe encourage listeners to evaluate their own wish lists critically, embracing trends that enhance their personal style while gracefully letting go of those that don't. They invite their audience to engage by sharing their thoughts on current trends and how they navigate their fashion choices.
Alyssa:
"Let us know what is on your wish list or what trends you are excited about or not so much in the comments below."
[36:24]
The episode underscores the podcast's commitment to promoting mindful consumption and building an intentional wardrobe, reaffirming that sustainable fashion is not just about the clothes we wear but the choices we make.
Christina on Short Spring Seasons:
"Spring lasts for like five minutes, and then it goes straight into the humidity and heat."
[01:17]
Alyssa on Shoulder Seasons:
"I call them shoulder seasons. Does no one else."
[02:02]
Christina on Decluttering:
"It's time. I never reach for it. I never do."
[08:18]
Alyssa on Mesh Flats:
"I didn't buy into mesh flats and opted for more traditional footwear."
[30:12]
Christina on Tank Tops as a Trend:
"Are you serious? How is a tank top a trend?"
[26:16]
This episode of Sustain This! offers valuable insights into navigating fashion trends with a sustainable and personal touch. By sharing their experiences and preferences, Alyssa, Christina, and Signe inspire listeners to make conscious fashion choices that reflect their true selves.
