Together we will unpack the nuances of what it really means to be a conscious consumer and find more joy in what we have right now. So grab your tea, your coffee, or whatever floats your boat and join us in the conversation. Let's go. Yay. Yay. Welcome. Welcome back, everyone. Hi. Today we are taking on the style that I am seeing on the streets of Milan, as well as one of my favorite topics, Italian style. So chic. So chic. They're just so good. I'm a bit biased because my parents are Italian, and I love Italy and the culture and all of it, and I come here quite often. I'm very lucky. So I do think, however, that every part of the world has such a different style. So I'm not saying that Italian style is, like, better. I mean, I can say it because I'm Italian, and I think from Italians is that it kind of is superior. Okay, I'm just gonna say it. Just kidding.
Christina
There's a reason it's a fashion city. It's an iconic fashion city.
Alyssa
Yeah. There's a reason why I think the Italians, like, just make. And it's not just fashion. I think the Italians have an inherent desire to make things beautiful from a design perspective. And Perspective. Well, yeah, it's like the bella figura, which is. I feel like. Yeah. Like, I feel like we can't really start talking about. About Italian style without talking about the concept of la bella figura, which is something that. It's a concept. It's an idea that I think Italians are kind of like, when you're born, you're raised with this idea of always putting your best foot forward, and not just in your physical appearance, but in your manners, in the way you carry yourself. So it's not even, like, an idea that is meant for. Oh, as in you have to always wear expensive things. Like, it's. It's nothing to do with that. It's, you know, keeping your. Keeping your clothes in good condition, always putting your best foot forward in every way, you know, making people feel, you know, welcomed. And it's almost like a way of showing respect for yourself and showing respect for others. I talk about this more in a video about Italian style, which I can link, but I just think it's really cool that I've. I've been able to spend quite a bit of time here in Milan. And so I'm going to share, we're going to just chat. A couple of things that I've been seeing that I've learned, especially in the winter. I always feel, I'm fascinated by how people approach the cold weather.
Christina
How cold does it get there?
Alyssa
So it's like the coldest we've had is like 5 degrees Celsius.
Christina
You can still wear great shoes at 5 degrees Celsius.
Alyssa
This is what we were talking about, like Christine and I think last week we were talking about this how it's cold. Like it's. I find it cold, but I don't have to put on snow boots. Like my clothing does not let my shoes. It's all about the shoes. Yeah. I don't have to wear boots. Like. Well, I, I do. I wear boots like we're wearing boots. But it's not like the Kevlar, like I must walk through a snowbank, you know, kind of boots.
Christina
They don't need insulation.
Alyssa
No, they don't need insulation. I mean, mine, mine are waterproof. They definitely have to be waterproof. Yeah, A lot of like, I guess we could start maybe with footwear. Like a lot. I'm seeing so many sneakers still. Tons and tons of sneakers. Even like in the winter time, they're always worn with like a great soc. Still seeing a lot of like the samba. Wait, is it the samba or the gazelle? I always get confused between those two.
Christina
I know the trend is like colorful now, right?
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
First sambas came out and it was like the white samba, the classic samba, the white and the black one. And now everyone's doing the colors of the. The colors, the leopard print ones and all of those.
Alyssa
But. Okay, but here's the thing. Every time I've come to Italy, their footwear, their sneakers have always been cool and colorful. And even the non brand, like all over Italy, in Rome, everywhere, even the south, their shoe stores have always had sneaker options that are just cool. Leopard and green, orange and yellow. Even the no name ones that are like these more like independent brands that you don't know, but they're just so cool. So that's always been a thing. But now I am seeing a lot of it is the gazelle. So like a lot of the gazelle in these really cool colorways I'm also seeing, which I find very odd, the short Ugg with a bit of a platform.
Christina
I kid you not, the Uggs are everywhere. They've infiltrated.
Alyssa
I don't understand.
Christina
They look so comfy though.
Alyssa
They look so comfy. And of course these women like that are wearing them. They, they're, they're, they, they look good. I'm like, ah, they, they wear them typically with like a w. Soft pant. I don't see them often styled with a trouser. Like it's a very clear, comfortable aesthetic. Usually with like a really beautiful coat or they're going like full on, leaning into the whole. I'm functional and cute in the winter. And they've got like a puffer and a cute hat or something, you know.
Christina
Okay. And you're sure they're Italian?
Alyssa
Yeah, yeah. This is a great question. So, like a lot I would say when it comes to the ugg, it's more the, I would say tourists that wear them. But I have for sure, like, I listen and they're speaking Italian. So there are. It's more. And it's more the younger the fashion.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Girls that are wearing these. I'm also seeing in the leisure section. I think of you and Toronto often, Christina, because if, if someone's wearing leggings in an athletic context, like, it's clear they're like walking their dog or going to the gym, then the, the uniform I would say is definitely like the legging with a high white sock and a white sneaker. Like a white sort of not dad. Not full on dad sneaker, but definitely retro inspired.
Christina
The Gen Z kind of vibe.
Alyssa
Yeah, the uniform. Right, The Gen Z uniform.
Christina
The crew sock versus the ankle sock.
Alyssa
Yeah, 100% yes. Yeah. So that's, that's kind of interesting too.
Christina
I've always heard that in Milan. Is it Milan or Milan?
Alyssa
It's, I say Milan.
Christina
It's a lot of black. Is that true?
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
Italians wear a lot of black.
Alyssa
Yes. Yeah. I think Milan as a city, style wise has a very strong undercurrent of elegance and like, no nonsense kind of style. So you'll see a lot of black, a lot of beautiful black tailored coats always worn usually like. So I feel like there's two camps. There's the all black, super elegant. Maybe they're wearing like a color in their scarf, like a bright yellow scarf or a hot pink toque. And then they've got black. Everything else, like a black trouser with a great black boot, like and, and like, I mean like a nice like sleek leather boot. So there's that kind of camp. But then there's also this other side which is very trend forward and these Usually do skew to. I find, like, a younger. It even depends on where you are in city. Kind of like the more, like, cool, like, trendy zones. Like, if, like, Brera, for example, you'll see, like, actually kind of everywhere. This is. This is the other side of the coin is the. The fur or faux fur or vintage fur jacket, shorts.
Christina
I think it's. Yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
It's adorable. It's a great silhouette.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
And I really like it mixed in with athleisure. Like, I love that with a track pant or with, like, probably with an ugg or a legging. I think that would be kind of fun. Yeah.
Alyssa
Yes. And we see that like, that with, like. Yeah. Or with denim. Like, a lot of, like, wide leg or straight denim. But, yeah, it looks really good with. With the athleisure vibe, I think that's so cool. Yeah. Like, it's a great contrast. So it's almost like there's the two. There's, like, the trend forward people and, like, and then there's still very stylish, but they're clearly, like, not here to play. Like, they're here to just look good. Yeah.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
So that's. That's that. So. Yeah.
Christina
So have being in. You've been in Milan for, like, a month or maybe like a month and a half, two months. So have you noticed how it's influencing your style while you're there? Like, how do you feel? Okay, so I watched your packing video, and you packed a very small capsule. So are you feeling like. Did you feel like you nailed it, or do you feel like something's missing? How are. How is it influencing. How is being in Milan influencing your style right now?
Alyssa
What a great question. I. There are definitely pieces that I'm missing. I met my sneakers. I should have brought my, like, sneakers. Oh, you brought your running shoes. And I should have known. I hate my running shoes. From an aesthetic perspective, I want to swear right now, that's how much I hate them. God, they're so ugly to come out. This is how much like, footwear. The.
Christina
Oh, footwear. I feel like it makes or breaks. It really does. I don't know.
Alyssa
No. 100%.
Christina
We should do a whole episode on that.
Alyssa
We could.
Christina
When you feel off, what is.
Alyssa
It's the footwear.
Christina
Where to go first.
Alyssa
Yeah, it's what I do. Always.
Christina
Me too.
Alyssa
Always. It's footwear. That's what I switch. And so, yeah, I have a pair of, like, just the lifestyle, like Asics. They're called the classic light, I think. And like, they're not. They're certainly not as interesting as the shoes we're seeing here. But I would definitely feel more like I am honoring the moment here if I had those shoes. So I. I miss that. Otherwise, I feel fine. I feel everything I brought is pretty classic. And like you said, it was small. Yeah, I feel good when I go out. I have good belts. That's huge. Because the other piece. So, like, I think there are kind of three things, and I'm going to do a whole video about this. But what I've noticed, at least in Milan, and I have to say, like, I've done videos on Italian style before, but the more time I spend here, the more I realize that. And this is everywhere. I mean, unless your country is really small. But even so, I think it's different. The way people in Milan dress is, like, very different from the way people dress in Rome in Leche. Like, even in. Like, I was in Torino the other day, and there was a little bit more of a sense of ease there, I found. But at least I think in general, some of the through lines that I've been seeing is shapes and cuts in general are fairly classic. And that definitely speaks to my style. Like, I've always found that. But you asked sort of how my style has been influenced, and I think I'm kind of being here validates why I like that so much. Like, it's just I've always tried to go against it and be like, why don't I try this? Why don't I try this? And now I'm like, eff it.
Christina
Like, this works for me. This aligns. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Alyssa
And it's like, I. Seeing all these other people doing. It's like, okay, but now this is how I can do it in a more interesting way. Because sometimes I do feel a little boring.
Christina
Oh, my God. You could never be boring.
Alyssa
No, but. Oh, thanks. It's kind of you. But. So, like, what I. What I noticed was with these shapes and cuts, then they're adding. They're adding the interest from color and texture mixes and details. So that's kind of what I'm working on next for me is the finding the details, whether it's like a really cool earring or like, we talked about the little bags with the. We talked about this in the last episode, I think. Or the episode about trends, the hyper personalization of bags. So I'm seeing a lot of charms on bags, which is really fun, even for those people who, like, I mentioned, like, they're wearing all black sometimes I still see, like, their bag is going to be, like, out of this world. And I don't mean, like, designer. Like, it just means it's a really cool bag. So the bags and shoes. And I've said this in. In past episodes about Italian fashion, like, because it's. It's very obvious to me, once you've kind of looked at all the recurring themes, the accessories, bags and shoes are just. It doesn't have to be designer. Doesn't have to be whatever, recognizable.
Christina
Is it a lot of loafers? When I think of Italian style, I don't know why I always think of a loafer. Maybe because I think of Gucci loafers or something. Or just something really classic and timeless and comfortable. Is that a thing?
Alyssa
Definitely. There's definitely. Yes, that's a great point. Lots of loafers. That's another kind of staple for all ages. It's just the way they're being styled. Like, you see the shuria who are wearing them. Shuria for. Are like. It's a term used for very elegant and stylish, mature Milanese women. I've mentioned them before on the podcast, but they're like, they're kind of just known. And I see them out and about, and these women, like, they're kind of in another category. So I kind of talked about, like, trend forward. That silhouette of the poofy fur with the wide leg.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Chunky shoe. Like, that's one. The next is the all black tailored people. And then there's the shuria who are just, like, in a world of their own. And they're the ones with the color and the hair is always done and the lipstick is always on. Oh. I couldn't take a picture of her because we were in the cafe and I don't like taking pictures of people when I'm, like, in an establishment. But she was wearing. She had to be like, in her late 80s, and she was wearing leather. Like a tapered leg, leather trouser.
Christina
Wow.
Alyssa
With a black sock and a loafer and a. Was it like a leopard or a faux leopard coat?
Christina
Oh, my God.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
And a red lip.
Alyssa
And it was like 9:30. Like, I was working at the cafe. It was 9:30 and I was having my coffee, and she was having her coffee and she just walked in and her bag was amazing. And she had, like, a big, like, a cool stud earring.
Christina
Man, this life. Find me in my 80s.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
Amazing.
Alyssa
Like, she might have had a dog with her. I don't know.
Christina
Oh, my God.
Alyssa
But like.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
And so they're like in a category all on their own because they, like I said, there's this coordination almost like not like bags always match their shoes or whatever, but there is, there's definitely like I saw another lady, she had a cobalt blue coat and the cuffs were turned inside out and they were like a. It was like a puffer, like a vinyl coat. Like it was just a regular vinyl quilted puffer kind of coat. And she had the cuffs turned out, so they were camel. I think I might have taken a picture of her if I did, like at the back of her. I'm going to link it here. But the cuffs were turned up and they were like a tan cognac color. And I think it was her bag. Yeah, she had like a great structured, Birkin esque looking bag and it was that almost an identical, like tan. So that's where the rest of the look. I forget. But that coordination, like that very strong visual reference is a really good, I would say through line for the shuria who just like, they're so cool. They just.
Christina
Is that what you're manifesting?
Alyssa
Yes.
Christina
Yeah. What are you most attracted to when you're there? Like, where do you see the most influence in your own style? Or like when you're getting dressed and you're thinking of, you know, the street style that you're seeing and the shuria and all of that? Like, what's in your head? Is it them? Is it the tailoring? Is it the, the younger generation? It.
Alyssa
You know what, it's definitely the, the. I think just the idea of being more playful. It's definitely not the, the younger with, you know, the trend forward. Because already I think I might have mentioned this in, in an Instagram post. I'm. At first I was very much attracted to the silhouette of like the poofy with the wide leg, but I see it so much now. Like it's everywhere that now I'm already sick of it. I'm like, oh, I'm done. I haven't even participated here.
Christina
That's so fascinating because I find that something in my mind is something that I see at least in Toronto. Like we kind of talked about this how some trends you really only see online versus the ones that you see in real life. Maybe because Milan is a more fashion forward city. So like people are actually adopting, like they're the early adopters and they, they, you know, take it on ahead of, ahead of kind of the rest of the world, especially in North America. I feel like we're a little bit slow on the uptake unless you're in, like, New York City or something like that. But, you know, for example, like, I still see the denim skirt and Uggs and the Lululemon onesie or the Aritzia onesie, and that's like, kind of a uniform. But. And if. If people are wearing that fur coat, it's like two of. It's like one. One in a hundred people that I'm seeing. And, like, that's the fashion girly. You know what I mean?
Alyssa
Okay.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Okay, so you can pinpoint her.
Christina
Yeah, yeah. I think, like, you can. You can tell, but they're a bit more of an outlier compared to the norm. Whereas it seems like, because Milan is such a fashion city, that. And that's kind of like on the forefront of everybody's mind and like, the culture and just like, what the city is known for, then, you know, that would influence you getting dressed and I think maybe makes people feel more bold and empowered to just wear that as normal, I guess.
Alyssa
Effy? Yeah, there's definitely a sense of. I don't want to knock it, but there's definitely a sense of like a not hustle, but keeping up. Not so much keeping up, maybe. Also because I'm not used to big cities, I do feel like this way in Toronto a little bit too. Like, it's very commercial, you know, that people who are here, like, they're always working, they're going somewhere, they're doing the thing. Like, yes, they're still going to aperitivo and stuff, but there's clearly, I think a lot of, like, they're aware of it, you know? Yeah, like, they're aware of it. Like, it's almost like everyone's. I don't think it's a sense of, like, everyone's trying to one up everyone. I don't get that sense, but I do get the sense of, like, you.
Christina
Know, that I care. This is me. Like, I'm here, you know, Like, I can hang, I can. I can run with the. With the big boys kind of thing. Yeah. Yes, I get what you mean.
Alyssa
You know what I mean?
Christina
And.
Alyssa
But equally, like, no one, I never feel judged for not wearing these things. You know what I mean? Like, there's equally. There's an appreciation for just someone who's well dressed or puts pride in their appearance. You know what I mean? Like, I also never feel like an outsider or like, okay, I need to go buy this thing now, because I just. I don't. I don't feel out of place. But I've definitely noticed the I just. I think I just put a little bit more effort. I make sure my details are good. Like, I'll do, like, this earring.
Christina
Yeah. And I've noticed when you've been doing the ring stacks that are kind of fun, you've been doing that every time that we get on. Get on the. Get on the chat, get on the podcast recording, there's always, like, little details like that, which I feel like you've done, but I feel like you're just. You're doing it more here. I feel like I'm noticing. Yeah.
Alyssa
Okay. Interesting. Yeah. And, like, I have this strong urge to go to a vintage store and buy a brooch and, like, stick it on my toque, you know, like my hat. Yeah, yeah. My little knit hat. So it's. Or like, even the bag personalization. I probably wouldn't seriously consider that in Canada, but, yeah. Seeing it done here in so many iterations has kind of opened me up to be like, oh, okay, I can do this in a way that I like, you know?
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
But, yeah, really paying. I'm trying to think, like, really paying attention to the details. Wearing my wide legs a lot, but I'm seeing a lot of skinny jeans still, too. And so that's. Yeah. So I think. I love that. But the. The skinny jean is. Is usually worn with a chunky combat boot or like a sneaker sock combo or like a loafer sock. But. No, no, not loafer. Sorry. But like the chunky boot for sure. So it's. I think it's just, like, paying more attention.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
If that makes sense.
Christina
Cool. Yeah.
Alyssa
I don't know.
Christina
I feel like this. This episode goes well with our. We. Before Cena went on Matt leave, we did an episode all about Scand style. So I think it's just kind of cool that we get this first. First person point of view, international kind of assessment of what these styles are. So from a Scandinavian, from an Italian in Milan. So it's. Yeah, I find it very interesting.
Alyssa
Cool. I'm so glad. And we got your.
Christina
We did.
Alyssa
We talked about Toronto style, too.
Christina
Yeah, we did.
Alyssa
We're not Canadian.
Christina
Yeah, yeah, yeah, It's. It's very cool. We just got like 10 centimeters of snow over the weekend, so we're snowed in. And so it's boots and puffer coats and hats and scar and mittens, and that's what we're doing. Waterproof everything.
Alyssa
Yeah. It has to be here. Also, there's a lot of, like, the little balaclavas. Is that happening yet? Like, the little Mini hood.
Christina
I haven't seen too much of that. Okay, maybe more like. Yeah, like, the fashion areas, like, maybe Yorkville and King west and stuff. But I'm seeing that more as, like, people just actually wearing their scarves in a headscarf kind of way.
Alyssa
In a headscarf.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
That's what I. I did that once or twice. I was like, let me try this.
Christina
Yeah. Yeah.
Alyssa
It's fun. Yeah.
Christina
It's cozy.
Alyssa
Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Oh, I hope. And this is, like, total disclaimer to all the Italians who are listening. Like, I hope I'm. I hope this is a fair assessment. I'll be in Rome in March, so we can do an episode on Rome, too.
Christina
Oh, nice.
Alyssa
Yeah.
Christina
Yeah, that's it. The other things I kind of think about. So you said, like, very classic kind of styling, a lot of black. Like, I think of, like, Brunello Cucinelli or like, Laura Piana. And like, to me, that's. I guess that's a very classic, classic. Like, very tailored, very neutral, clean lines. I always think of, like, men's wear.
Alyssa
Oh, yeah. Like the tae. I think tailoring. Tailoring is a. Is a big one. Like. Yeah, tailoring is a really big one. But then there's also. It's cool. Like, there really is that mixed bag. There's the trend forward and then the tailoring. Tailored people who are. Who are there as well. But even then, even when it's simple, like I said, there's. There's always an element of, like, it's a beautiful knit. Like you said, like the Brunello Cuccinelli. Like, the sweaters are like. There's like a detail, or you can tell it's just really nice. Just a nice, high quality jean. High quality. There's an interesting, Like. Yeah, there's an interesting detail there. I'm trying to think. I bet you in the summer, spring and fall, it's easier to get a read too, because now it's just everyone's wearing their coat. So.
Christina
And you said black, like, long, black coat. Are you seeing a lot of, like, a tailored. So I guess what's the difference between Italian style and the Copenhagen style that we observed?
Alyssa
Oh, what a great question. Yeah. I think the Italian style is more. I mean, Italian style is still very playful, but Scandinavian style has. In my opinion, I feel like there's more of a sense of ease. Whereas in Italian, Italians, like, like you said, we want you to know that we've put effort into our look. Like, we. To look effortless, we end up. We end Up Like I'm talking, like I'm one of them. They end up looking effortless. But it's not because they're trying to. It's just because that's part of, that's just the way of life, is to put together a good outfit. Like, even if you're just going to the grocery store or even if you're just walking your dog.
Christina
Yeah. What do those outfits look like when you're out and about? Yeah, when you're going to the grocery store, picking up your pasta for dinner.
Alyssa
Same. I mean, it depends where you are. Definitely there's people who are like, you can tell they're just coming off work and like we're, you know, just wearing like a coat. Like I wore, I had, I went for a long walk one day and I went and I did like a grocery run and I had to do a bunch of errands and I wore leggings and my sneakers and a pair of high socks and my puffer coat. Like I was, I didn't look, I felt good because it was, I had my little yellow hat, so I had an interesting pop of color. My bag, I had my, my black JMB like made in Canada leather backpack, which is really beautiful. You can tell by the craftsman's craftsmanship. So like I felt put together.
Christina
Yeah.
Alyssa
Maybe not stylish, so you see that. But then also like there are, you know, you see people who maybe don't put as much effort in because they're exhausted and they're whatever and they're just wearing like a cool coat. But the shoe is always good. Like, yeah, a shoe in the bag. You know, if the rest of their look is clearly just like, this is my day to day, like, I don't care. The shoe in the bag is usually there's a cool detail. It's interesting, it's thoughtful, it's comfortable.
Christina
Okay. So if for our listeners at home, if you wanted to start feeling like you were dressing a bit more like an Italian or dressing with the. What's the word? How. What does that look like? Like, what can, what's one thing that someone can do when they're getting dressed to exude that in their outfit, no matter where you are in the world.
Alyssa
What a beautiful question.
Christina
As we close out. What's one great takeaway that this is.
Alyssa
I don't want it to sound so wishy washy, but I think it's to put some thought. Some thought into what you're wearing. So whether it's that all of the pieces work together, cohesively that they have been well maintained. So, I mean, unless it's a tre. Like, you know, your denim is ripped because it's intentionally ripped, or you've got, like, a visible mend. And that's really cute. Like, those things are fine, but no.
Christina
One'S wearing, like, a wrinkled shirt kind of thing. Like, it's pressed.
Alyssa
Yeah. Like, it's. It's really like, just if you. If you were to take. If you were to get dressed, and then after you get dressed, take, like, five minutes and just check yourself. Be like, do I like. Do I like the way this is falling on me? Do I like the way this feels? Could I like, am I bringing attention to the parts of me that I want to bring attention to today? I think that's. That's what it is. Because if you give yourself those five minutes, then you might end up cuffing a sleeve or, like, just doing a little lint roll and being like, wait a minute. Like, this isn't quite presentable. Like, this isn't right where I want it. So it's not about getting, like, a 10, in my opinion. It's not about getting, like, a 10 on 10 outfit. It's about maybe my outfit right now is a six or a seven, and that's okay. Because life is life, and like. Like, this is reality. Okay? Like, our lives are crazy. The world is crazy right now. So maybe your outfit starts as a six, but la bella figura kind of, you bring it. Maybe you bring it to a seven and that's it. Yeah, maybe it's a six and a half.
Christina
I like that. I feel like it also. That makes me kind of think of, like, it almost lowers the expectation of just getting dressed on a daily basis because I feel like there's pressure to feel like your outfit needs to be a 10 every single day. And to me, you know, a seven. It's almost like back to that all or none thinking or, like, done is better than perfect. If it's a 6 or if it's a 7, I feel like that's a great way to move through the world.
Alyssa
Right?
Christina
You know, like, that's like a. Just like, you're not meant to be super happy all the time. We're not meant to be super sad all the time. Like that nice kind of cruising moderation.
Alyssa
Yes. I love that. Yeah, I actually. Oh, my God. I actually filmed a short about that. I think I said, like, something along those lines. Like, it's not about how your outfit doesn't have to be a 10 every day. Yeah, it's just not realistic.
Christina
No, I agree. Yeah. But I like that how you mentioned. Yeah, giving yourself that extra five minutes. That does give you time and space to add a cuff, to add a belt, just to zhuzh, I guess a little bit. But that's something that doesn't try too hard. I think it's the intent and the care. As you said, everything needs to be beautiful. Everything needs to be just put together.
Alyssa
It's like pride in oneself, you know?
Christina

Title: We're spilling the best Italian style secrets from the streets of Milan
Release Date: February 25, 2025
Hosts: Alyssa Beltempo, Christina Mychas, & Signe Hansen
In this vibrant episode of Sustain This!, hosts Alyssa Beltempo, Christina Mychas, and Signe Hansen delve into the enchanting world of Italian street style, specifically focusing on the fashion-forward city of Milan. Alyssa, drawing from her personal Italian heritage and extensive time spent in Milan, leads the conversation by highlighting the unique elements that make Italian style both sophisticated and accessible.
Alyssa Beltempo opens the discussion by expressing her deep affection for Italian culture and fashion, stating, “I think Italian style is superior” (00:16). While acknowledging her bias, she emphasizes that Milan’s status as a fashion capital is well-deserved, not only for its clothing but for the broader Italian appreciation of beauty and design.
La Bella Figura: A central theme Alyssa explores is the concept of la bella figura, a quintessential Italian philosophy that transcends mere appearance. She explains, “It’s about always putting your best foot forward… showing respect for yourself and others” (02:22). This cultural mindset influences every aspect of Milanese attire, ensuring that even casual outfits exude intentionality and care.
The conversation shifts to Milan’s approach to winter fashion. Despite Milan’s relatively mild winters, the streets are teeming with stylish footwear that marries functionality with aesthetics.
Footwear Trends: Alyssa notes the prevalence of colorful sneakers, mentioning iconic styles like Samba and Gazelle in vibrant hues (03:39). She observes, “Every pair is so cool and colorful, even the non-brand ones” (04:11). Additionally, Uggs have made their way into Milanese fashion, but often styled in a more sophisticated manner, paired with tailored coats and chic accessories (04:21).
Sustainable Choices: The hosts discuss the importance of sustainability in Milan’s fashion scene, highlighting how practicality doesn’t compromise style. Alyssa shares her personal challenge with bringing aesthetically pleasing footwear, underscoring how critical shoes are to complete a Milanese look (09:28).
Milan’s diverse fashion landscape is characterized by distinct segments, each offering a unique take on contemporary style.
All Black Elegance: A significant portion of Milanese fashion leans towards an all-black palette, embodying elegance and sophistication. Alyssa describes this look as “beautiful black tailored coats” paired with sleek leather boots and occasionally accented with vibrant scarves (06:34).
Trend-Forward Youngsters: In contrast, the younger crowd in trendy neighborhoods like Brera embraces more avant-garde styles, incorporating faux fur jackets and mix-and-match textures (07:54). Christina adds, “They look really good with athleisure, creating a great contrast” (08:19), highlighting the playful yet polished nature of these ensembles.
Shuria: The Epitome of Milanese Chic: Alyssa introduces the shuria, a term referring to elegant and stylish mature Milanese women who epitomize refined fashion. She recounts an encounter with a shuria dressed in a tapered leather trouser, leopard coat, and structured bag, illustrating the meticulous coordination that defines this group (14:01). Christina humorously remarks, “Find me in my 80s” upon hearing the description, emphasizing the timelessness of this style.
The episode delves into how Milanese fashion influences personal style choices and sustainable practices.
Alyssa’s Style Evolution: Alyssa reflects on how her time in Milan has validated and refined her own minimalist yet thoughtful approach to fashion. “I’m really trying to pay more attention to the details,” she shares, mentioning her focus on accessories like earrings and personalized bags (12:00). This mindfulness aligns with the podcast’s overarching theme of sustainable and intentional consumption.
Christina’s Observations: Christina draws parallels between Milan and Toronto, noting how Milan’s fashion-forward ethos contrasts with the more uniform athleisure trends observed in North America. She observes, “In North America, especially outside of fashion hubs like New York, trends like denim skirts and Uggs remain more uniform” (17:20), highlighting Milan’s role as an early adopter of diverse styles.
As the episode wraps up, Alyssa offers actionable insights for listeners eager to infuse Milanese elegance into their own wardrobes.
Thoughtful Dressing: Alyssa emphasizes the importance of putting thought into attire, ensuring that each piece is cohesive and well-maintained. “Take five minutes to check your outfit… bring attention to the parts of me that I want to highlight” (27:22). This practice encourages a balance between functionality and style, embodying la bella figura in everyday life.
Practical Tips:
Embracing Imperfection: Christina adds a layer of relatability by advocating for a balanced approach to dressing: “A seven is a great way to move through the world” (29:29). This mindset alleviates the pressure to achieve perfection, promoting a sustainable and joyful approach to personal style.
The episode concludes with the hosts encouraging listeners to share their own community’s style nuances, fostering a global conversation about fashion and sustainability. Alyssa looks forward to exploring Rome’s unique style in a future episode, promising more insights into Italy’s diverse fashion landscape.
Final Quote: Alyssa encapsulates the episode’s spirit by inviting listeners to appreciate the thoughtful effort behind each outfit: “It’s not about getting a 10 out of 10 outfit. It’s about maybe bringing it to a seven and that's it” (27:53).
This episode of Sustain This! offers a rich exploration of Milanese street style, blending cultural insights with practical fashion advice. Whether you’re inspired to refine your wardrobe or embrace sustainable fashion practices, Alyssa, Christina, and Signe provide valuable perspectives that celebrate intentional living and mindful consumption.
