Like, I just want everyone to notice that, that this is not a. A story that you heard when you were a kid. And then it's like, yeah, I know, I know, I know. For the rest of your life, it's here you are almost 50 years old, and you hear the truth of what God did for you and you can barely talk. Yeah. I mean, I just want that for everyone.

I do, too. You know, Frances, when I had that moment, it was in my bedroom when I was 24 years old, and it felt like that veil was lifted off my eyes and God just revealed his truth to me. I felt fully understood the gospel for the first time in my life. I. I prayed that day, God, don't ever let me forget this, the depths of what this means and what you did for me. And I always want to know how. How massive this is in my life and forever life changing. And it's just so humbled by it that he would do that for me.

Francis Chan (4:44)

Yes, yes.

Candace Cameron Bure (4:45)

And for everyone. And Francis, I pray. Been praying that prayer for 30 years that I would not forget. And I truly believe it's why I'm so affected every time I hear it, because God just reminds me of how his love is for me.

Yeah. No, I just wanted, you know, that's so ministered to me. I just loved it because that's the way it's supposed to be.

Candace Cameron Bure (5:08)

Yeah.

Like, I think sometimes in our churches we want to come up with something new.

Candace Cameron Bure (5:13)

Right.

Francis Chan (5:13)

To keep everyone's attention. It's like, ah, are we going to take communion again? You know, no, Communion should be more exciting each time. Like, I'm reminded of the cross again. I'm reminded, like, we should get better at this and we should get more responsive to the gospel as this news just gets more outrageous to me rather than that's old news. It's like, no, it's good news. It's great news. Say it again. I was with a couple who lost their child, you know, died in their crib. And he was one of our elders. And I remember getting to their house and a bunch of us went over there and you don't know what to say.

Candace Cameron Bure (6:09)

Yeah.

Francis Chan (6:10)

And everyone just kind of huddled around Them. And, And I just remember the wife says, would someone just preach the gospel right now? Just tell me the gospel again. Would you just. Just shower us with verses, please. Just read verses, please. Just like, yeah, I don't need you to say, I'm sorry or it's going to be okay. Preach the gospel to me. And I just still remember that, like, when it's the most devastating time, remind me of what happened on the cross again. And so to hear you say that just brought me back. And too many people are chasing, like, new information. And that was the point of what I was writing was like, I'm realizing the love of God is not something you move beyond. It's something you have to keep coming back to. And it strengthens you and deepens you and you can enjoy it more each time.

Candace Cameron Bure (7:18)

So we were together not too long ago at a funeral.

Francis Chan (7:22)

Yeah.

Candace Cameron Bure (7:24)

And you gave an incredible word. I mean, but you, too, preached the gospel because the person who had passed wanted the gospel preached at his funeral, wanted to make sure that everyone that was there knew the love of God. And then our mutual friend Shaleen.

Francis Chan (7:48)

Yes. Upstaged me again.

Had an incredible word and preached the gospel. And then her daughter went up and preached the gospel.

Francis Chan (7:56)

Yes.

Candace Cameron Bure (7:57)

Well, right after that, Francis, I had to go speak at a conference, and I was speaking to several thousand people.

Francis Chan (8:06)

Yeah.

Candace Cameron Bure (8:06)

I just come from the funeral, and I had prepared to talk a little bit more about living my faith out in Hollywood.

Francis Chan (8:15)

Yeah. Yes, yes, yes.

Candace Cameron Bure (8:16)

I came in like a bull on fire, and I came in hot, and I was like, where are you? Where are you guys going?

Francis Chan (8:25)

Yeah.

Candace Cameron Bure (8:26)

Because we're all going to die one day.

Francis Chan (8:28)

Yes.

And I just preached the gospel. It was kind of all I could do. It just took over. And I, you know, I hope that after the. I mean, you can never go wrong preaching the gospel. But I, I was like, oh, I realize I came in hot, but there's. There's nothing more than death.

Francis Chan (8:47)

Yes.

Candace Cameron Bure (8:47)

That's going to remind you of what's the most important thing in life.

Francis Chan (8:52)

Absolutely.

Candace Cameron Bure (8:52)

And so I didn't. I wanted to make sure that they'd already heard the gospel even before me, other preacher or other speakers that were there. But I, I, I just couldn't not share that, because if they walked out that door.

And that was the last thing they heard. I want to make sure that they

knew that God loved them. I love it. Yeah. I mean, I feel like we could do podcasts and preach the gospel every time and, and have it not get old, but I know you have other topics you got.

Well, let's take. Let's take a listener question here. This is. This is from someone named Candace with an I, not an A.

Okay, okay.

And she asks what scriptures can help us with our vices. I struggle with multiple things that just seem to come back over and over.

Francis Chan (9:41)

Wow, man. Thanks for being honest. Candace with an I. I know for me there are certain things I need to be reminded of. First Corinthians 10:13 is a great one where he says, no temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability to. But with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape that you may be able to endure it. Maybe I'll just sit on that passage because he's saying, look, we all have our temptations. And he is promising now that no temptation has overtake you except that which is common. We can't say, well, I'm more tempted than everyone else ever. He just says, no, it's common to man, and he won't let you be tempted beyond your ability. So at that moment, whatever it is, you could get out of it. Don't let the enemy say, oh, no, this is just too strong. Too strong. I trust this. Every time I'm tempted, I go, I could get out of this whether I choose to or not. It's always my fault. I'm not going to play the victim and go, well, it's just too hard for me. No, this is a promise from the word of God. I'm not going to call him a liar. So I think it's a key passage and it says, he'll always give you a way of escape so you can endure under it, so you may be able to endure it. So it doesn't mean. And okay, so you've probably encountered people, let's say they were alcoholics and then they give their life to Jesus and then suddenly they go, my son in law is this way. He goes, I never desired again. It was. In fact, I went to a party the next day. I tried to even take a sip, and I couldn't do it. It's just like it's just gone. And I've had other friends say the same thing. But then I have a slew of friends that go every day, look, I love Jesus, but that temptation is in my face and I long for it. And I beg him to take it away from me, but he hasn't. And I go, man, God is so honored by your fight every day. And Sometimes it's even like what we've been talking about with the beloved. There are people like you. You don't wrestle with God's love for you. I still do at times. Like, the enemy gets so in my head. But I don't take it as poor me. I just go, God, that's awesome. Because that forces me every day to meditate on your love and be reminded of these truths. And God is honored by both types of people. The one where he does the miracle, that is a once and for all. You got it. You don't crave your. You know, whether it's drugs, alcohol, pornography, like, it's just gone somehow. Because testify about that, right? Boast in the Lord, because you know you didn't do that. And then for the person who struggles through it every day, boast in the Lord and go, gosh, she gives me strength every day, though, and every day I can overcome. So that's what I would say to Candice with an eye.

Candace Cameron Bure (13:29)

So we're talking about life in this episode, and we didn't really talk about the fact that you wrote the book with your daughter. And I think that's a great place to start within your family and life. And so tell me about writing this with mercy.

Francis Chan (13:49)

Oh, gosh, it's a dream. It's like, it's not even a dream because I didn't dream it. Like, I wouldn't even know to dream these things. You know what God says He'll do things that you can't even beyond what you could ask or imagine. I never imagined my family being like this because I didn't even have the creativity to believe a family could be this great and that a relationship with my daughter. And, you know, in our family, like, when it's your birthday, like, we'll just go around the table and everyone will say what they love about you. And that year, this year, when it was my daughter's turn, she said, dad, to be able to sit and talk about the love of God for six months with you, that is something I will never forget. Like, it was just such a gift.

Candace Cameron Bure (14:48)

Yeah.

Francis Chan (14:48)

And that's the way I felt. I'm like, are you kidding me? I am with my daughter. That all the history we've had and just this great relationship and now we're writing together. And she's. God has given her this wisdom that I don't have and other gifts that I don't have, and. And to be able to do that together. And now we have completely different upbringings. She's bringing her experience into this. I don't know. You know, the Bible says that he came to give us life and life to the full. There's a fullness. Like, I just. Like when the psalmist says, my cup overflows. That's what I feel like. And when my family is laughing and. Or praying or worshiping or just whatever, just anytime we're together, it's like, oh, this is so full. It's so good.

Candace Cameron Bure (15:49)

Yeah.

I have a full house.

Candace Cameron Bure (15:52)

You do have a full house.

I should have a sitcom.

Candace Cameron Bure (15:57)

Talk about abiding in love and what the word abide means.

Francis Chan (16:11)

Yeah, I mean, abide is very simple. It's like, just live there. Live in it. Just. Okay, this is really good. Like, you know, we talk about the Holy Spirit being in us, right? And that's like, whoa, Holy, holy, holy. God is dwelling in me. That's awesome. And I've dwelt on that. But have you ever meditated on the fact that right now you are in him, like, inside of him. Like, picture like, when you were pregnant and Lev is inside of you. Like, he's just surrounded. Now imagine you and I, right now, we're in God. We're somehow, like, inside of him. I don't have to worry about anything. I don't have to fear anything. And he says, I want you to abide in me. I want you to abide in my love. Like, just live inside of it. Like, don't. Don't let the enemy distract you. And now suddenly you're insecure. You're thinking about this. This is, get back in here. Get back in here and just live there. Oh, yeah, I'm loved by him. I'm inside of Him. You know, some describe it like a. Use this illustration of a sponge. And I just put it inside water. And now it's like, okay, like, I'm that sponge. Like, he's. I'm inside of him and he's inside of me. And where do I end and where does the water start? Like, it just. I don't know how to explain it. It's just I'm perfectly inside of him. You can't really describe where's Francis and where is God? And I can't separate the two anymore. Like, that's the way we just live inside of God and inside of his love. And, you know, sometimes when I'm speaking somewhere, I'll take one of my kids and I'll just. I'll just hold mercy and, you know, because she's a worship leader sometimes she's leading worship. I'm like, come up here, honey. You know, and just. I'll just hold her because I want the crowd to see this picture. And I go, okay. Is this how your relationship with God looks? You know, where you're just. That was John, like, the one that just put my head on his chest because I knew I could. I knew he would like it. I'm just safe there. I just live right here. I mean, that's what he wants for us.

Candace Cameron Bure (19:17)

What do you think the biggest things around us cause us not to abide in love? You talked about distraction. Yeah, well, problems in our lives.

Francis Chan (19:31)

The Bible talks about Satan being the accuser, so he is always, like, just wanting to accuse. And that's what he's doing with Job. Come on, God. You know, Job, he only loves you because of this. You know, hey, do this, and he'll hate you. That's what he does all the time. And he does it to us. You know, it's like, come on, Candace. Really? God loves you. You know? Remember when you did this? Remember what you. You know, what about this? What about this? What about. And so not only does he do that, almost, like, somehow whispering these words to us, but he uses people, and they'll say the most horrible things about you. And then he'll use Christians who just will attack you. Mm. And. And what happens is, it's hard to forget some of those biting statements, and they're trying to convince everyone else that you're that way, and you get riled up. And then now, suddenly, are you abiding in his love? No. You're thinking about what this person said to you, Right? And. And you. But that's where I have to go. No, God tells me, I've told the elders of my church this. You know, I go, look, this is. If someone writes something horrible about you, you don't have the right to meditate on that. The Bible says you're supposed to take every captive, every thought captive, right? And it says you're supposed to dwell on what's lovely and true and praiseworthy. Does this fit the description of true, lovely, praiseworthy? You know? No. And so, just like my body is not my own, I'm not free to just do whatever I want to do. My mind is not my own. I gave that to the Lord. So I'm not free to meditate on whatever I feel like meditating. Because sometimes it's almost like we're masochistic, and we. We want to replay those times when we Got angry at someone and just picture how you would, you know what? Oh, I could have said this. Dang it. That would have been a better one.

Candace Cameron Bure (21:48)

Deeply hurt you.

Francis Chan (21:49)

Yeah. Oh, yeah. And. But I have to remind myself, like, that's why I told the elders, don't meditate on it. You're not allowed to meditate on it. You're commanded to dwell on what is true. And that's what I have to do. And those are some of the things that will distract me is if I listen too much to what others are saying rather than dwelling on what God has said about me. It doesn't mean, you know, of course you always want to be humble and go, okay, is that true? And when people come to you and love and like, wow, my wife said something to me yesterday and I was like, yeah, you're right, I didn't love that person. Well, yeah, you're right, you're right. And so it doesn't mean like, you're arrogant. Like, I'm not listening to that. It's like, no, that was true. And I am weak in that area. And I do need to change that. I do need to go apologize. And I went and apologized to the guy. So I'm not talking about that. I'm just saying when you dwell on some of these things that just aren't true, voices in your head saying you're worthless, you don't match up, you shouldn't be doing what you're doing. It's like, no, I'm not that.

Oh my gosh. It was outrageous. It was. I go, every believer on earth needs to hear that interview. I mean, it.

Candace Cameron Bure (27:52)

Yeah, it's type in. Yeah, whatever. However you guys do that, Francis, Johnny. And it'll be J, O, N, I. I mean, it's. But she makes this statement of. She goes, there are times when she's a quadriplegic for 60 years and so her husband is just caring for her. And she goes, there's days I wake up and you gotta clean me up, you've gotta put this thing on me, you gotta do this, you gotta clothe me, you gotta feed me. And I'm in so much pain right now. And I don't want to cry out in pain because I don't want to make my husband do another thing. And I just start, you know that he goes, the enemy just starts telling me like, you're a burden. You are a burden to so many people. And she goes, Then I go, no, that is not true. I'm a daughter of the king. I have purpose and I'm a beloved child of God. I. I'm just like, yes, you know, here's a quadriplegic being taken care of for 60 years and says, I'm not gonna believe that lie, that I'm a, an obligation, a burden. And it was so powerful.

Candace Cameron Bure (29:14)

Yeah.

Francis Chan (29:15)

It's like, I'm not gonna go there. Oh, I know what God has said about me.

Candace Cameron Bure (29:19)

Incredible. Yeah, I'm gonna go watch that.

Francis Chan (29:21)

You need to watch it.

Candace Cameron Bure (29:22)

I loved an example, a story that you wrote in the book too, really, about putting your focus in the right place. And it was about you mountain biking and burning and crashing.

Francis Chan (29:32)

Yes, yes, yes. Okay. I consider myself a decent athlete, you know, and, you know, and so my friends and I, we've always been very competitive. Whatever. And they started mountain biking. I'm like, whatever, I'll try it. I know how to ride a bike. But I kept falling, like, ridiculously. Like, I, I would wedge My tire in the wrong place and, you know, fall. I would hit a rock, I'd fall. I did one of those where I went off the edge of this cliff, like. And I'm trying to break as I go down. And it's a weird feeling, but you, in slow motion, you start flying over the handlebars. And I'm just rolling down this cliff. And once I get up, then all my friends are laughing, and. And I finally asked my friend Keith. I'm like, what is the deal? And he says, do you see, like, a rock? And go, I don't want to hit that. I go, yes. I go, did you see that cliff? And go, I don't want to go down it. I go, yes. And he goes, that's your problem. He goes, when you mountain bike, don't look at the obstacles. You're supposed to stare at the path where you want to go, and then just keep your eyes on that path. Because what happens is if you stare at the rock you don't want to hit, your arms will naturally, naturally go where your eyes are looking. And. And so you just hit these things, stare at the path. And. And later on, I thought about. And then I didn't fall anymore. But I thought, oh, my gosh, that's exactly what the scripture says. Like, fix your eyes on Jesus. Like, don't go, oh, I. I don't want to look at pornography. I don't want to look at pornography. Guess what you're going to do instead. Like, just stare at Jesus. Like, don't take your eyes off of him. Pick the path where you. You don't go, I don't want to become like my dad. I don't want to be angry like my dad. You spend your life doing that. Guess who you're going to become like, instead of going, wow, Jesus, you're so beautiful. Jesus. The way you forgave Jesus, the way you love, the way you loved me. You just. You fix your eyes on where you want to go. And so that was just a great.

Candace Cameron Bure (31:57)

It's a great example. Yeah, it really is. Will you talk about the distinction between conviction from the Holy Spirit and condemnation from the devil?

Francis Chan (32:12)

Wow. Well, first, thank God, if you're convicted.

Candace Cameron Bure (32:19)

Yes.

Francis Chan (32:19)

Because the Bible says today is a day of salvation. Like, if. If you hear the voice, he says, don't harden your hearts. Don't, don't. It's. It's. The idea of the word is, like, callous. Don't. You know, when you get calluses, you know, you work out. It's. It's like, suddenly it's like, oh, good, good, good, good. Or if you play guitar, it's like, okay, I got calluses on my fingertips so they won't bleed anymore. I won't feel it. And he says, you know, your heart can be that way. You stay in a sin long enough. Like, the first time you sin, it's like, oh, I feel terrible. But each time you feel a little bit less terrible because you're building up this callus. And that's why he says, if you can still hear his voice change now, thank God that you can hear his voice, because that's what the Spirit does in us. If you can just keep going on in your sin and feel nothing, that's a very dangerous place to be. Thank God. If you feel conviction from the Holy spirit. That's why First John 3 says, no one who's been born of God keeps on sinning. You don't just keep on because his seed abides in you. It's like the Spirit abides in you. And the Bible says he makes you a slave to righteousness. And so really, for believers, we get convicted about what's wrong, and we should be thankful for that conviction. Wow. Thank you, Lord. Thank you. That I feel that what I just did was wrong in your eyes, and I'm so sorry. And I don't. I don't want to go back to that. Praise God. That's conviction. Condemnation is like this fearful, like. Like I'm not going to be forgiven. Gosh, I'm trying to think of words for this one. It's almost like you've lost your position before God because of this sin and he no longer loves you.

Candace Cameron Bure (34:35)

The good way to put it.

Francis Chan (34:36)

Yeah. How could I. How could he possibly love me after I did that? That's coming from the devil. Because now you're not staring at him and his who? He says he is rich in mercy. He's the dad of the prodigal son. I'm not focusing on what he says about himself. I'm not believing that I can come to him again. But I just feel condemned. I just feel like I can't approach him. I'm not going to approach him. I'll wait till I do better and then I'll start praying again. I've had those thoughts in the past. Like, okay, let me prove to you, God, that I'm serious. I even remember in college, like, there was such a seriousness. Like, if I struggled with lust that day, I told myself, okay, then I will fast the next day. And so every time I lust the next day I won't eat, and I'm just gonna discipline and force it. And then if I fast long enough, you know, then after a day of fasting, then I can come before God again. I know I was saying it's wrong to set up things like that, but it was a weird, like, works type of thing.

Candace Cameron Bure (35:52)

Right.

Francis Chan (35:52)

I lost a lot of weight, but it was just. It's one of those things where I'm like. I don't know. It was like a weird earning and condemning thing for me. Like, I'm going to prove to you that I was serious. It's the exact principle of the prodigal son who says, okay, I'll be your slave for a little bit, and then maybe eventually I can be a son again. And it's like, no, that's not the right God. You're not worshiping the God of the Bible. That's a condemnation from the enemy.

Candace Cameron Bure (36:28)

I've talked about this before on the podcast, but when I was in a. Just a tough season in my life and in some sin patterns that I was well aware of, but I wanted to be in them. And I'm like, this is what's giving me comfort right now. And, God, I know it's wrong. I want my comfort from you, but. Yeah, but at the same time, you're not giving me this instant gratification that I want right now.

Francis Chan (36:58)

Yes.

Candace Cameron Bure (36:59)

And I'm just going to step away from you for a minute. But I was like, but I still want you at arm's length. Because I knew enough. I was like, don't let me go. Don't let me go. But I need to take a break from you right now. It was a weird season of my life, but I'm grateful that God was very patient with me and. Because it's a weird feeling to know the truth, but willingly say, but I don't want to stand in that. I'm a little kid and I want to do what I want to do.

Francis Chan (37:34)

Yeah. Yeah. Wow.

Candace Cameron Bure (37:36)

And I don't really know the point of why I'm sharing that, but it was just.

Francis Chan (37:40)

So glad you did.

Candace Cameron Bure (37:43)

But I talked with him through that season because I was like, I don't want to disappear from you, but I already know this. I know this is wrong. So let me figure out why I'm doing this, what I'm doing, and work through my issues and just don't leave me. Don't leave me because I want you, but I just need a timeout right now.

Wow. I think that's so helpful. For you to be honest with that. Because, like, there's times when I've even told God, like, I know if I just went read my Bible and prayed, it'd be better. I'm just gonna watch this show on

Right. And take my mind off of this. And each time afterwards, you're like, why did I do that?

Candace Cameron Bure (38:44)

And then when you finally do get in the presence of God and you're like, I'm such an idiot. I'm such an idiot. Thank you for being patient. Thank you for your grace. Thank you for your mercy. Yeah.

That's what's been incredible, is that God's always there when you ask. You just ask him to be there. He's always there.

Francis Chan (39:09)

Yeah. And the Bible doesn't say that we just won't sin at all. It says that you continue in that you can't stay in, that God won't let you.

And the spirit in you, you won't let yourself. And so. Yeah, thanks for sharing that.

I'm gonna see if we have time for a listener question. Okay. This question is from Jane, and she asks, do you think that if we didn't have the promise of God's love and the promise of heaven or eternity with him, that we would still have faith or that there would be an urgency to know Him? That's an interesting question.

Francis Chan (39:59)

Yeah. Yeah. No, I appreciate the question. Here's how I would answer that. We can throw a lot of hypothetical things out there, and we could start having podcasts about questions like that, because this is the way people think, and we throw it out there. And I would say there are so many wonderful things to meditate on and talk about. Like when we talked about the gospel and just said, wow, let me think about what he's done. Let me think about what he feels toward me this very second. I want to rest in that. I want to abide in that. I want to meditate on that. And sometimes maybe we overthink things or we talk about things, we only have so much capacity in our mind and in our hearts and our affections. And so while I can appreciate questions like that, I almost feel like, for me, when I dwell on things like that too much, it's not good for my soul. So things like, well, if God made me this way, or if he. If he had did things differently, like, okay, but he didn't.

Did. He didn't.

Francis Chan (41:51)

And I have such a hard time focusing on the right things that I'm actually not going to take the time to meditate on that one. And I hope that doesn't sound rude.

Candace Cameron Bure (42:05)

I don't think so at all. I think it sounds wise.

Francis Chan (42:07)

Yeah. It's like, I don't really want to do that. Let's just keep talking about how much God loves us. Isn't it awesome? Yes, it is. He's so great. He's just. He is so good. His mind is. Because I. I always knew he was. I never challenged his power or his intelligence, but now I'm finally understanding that I've kind of challenged his love. Like, I know you. You're smarter than me. You're stronger than me. But do you love me as much as I love my kids? That's also the attitude I had. Like, well, that was stupid. Like, if I love my kids that much, then almighty God, like he says, if you as an evil father know how to give. Imagine me. And so it's like if I. I know what I feel towards my kids and God's going, well, imagine me. Think about how I feel about you and Candace. Okay. I want to think about that. I don't really want to think about anything else.
