All right, guys, let's buckle up for a depressing week because we're going to be covering the Psalms of Lament.
Joby Martin
Okay?
Kyle Thompson
I know you've been waiting your entire life for this moment, right? But I'm just going to go ahead and admit to you right from the jump that for whatever reason, I am drawn more towards the darker and sadder side of things. God put me on this planet to equip men to push back darkness. Men like you to push back darkness. And that's what we do day in and day out at Undaunted Life. So I reckon it makes sense that I spend a good deal of time being familiar with darkness, so I can recognize it when I experience it. But here's what I love about the Lament psalms that we see in the Old Testament. They're incredibly raw and honest. These psalms express grief and sorrow and distress and duress. But they very often culminate in a hunger for and a trust in our holy, mighty, powerful, and loving God. So we're going to look at five different Psalms of Lament this week. Today we're going to hit Psalm 13. I'll read it here in its entirety to the choir master. A Psalm of David. How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day? How long shall my enemy be exalted over me? Consider and answer me, O Lord my God, light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death. Lest my enemies say I have prevailed over him. Lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken, but I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me. Guys, can you see why I like the Psalms of Lament so much? I mean, can you not feel the unbelievable, unconcealed emotion here from David? I actually love this comment from Augustine concerning the second verse. How long shall I place counsel in my soul? There is no need of counsel but in adversity. Therefore, how long shall I place counsel in my soul is as if it were said, how long shall I be in adversity? So here at the beginning of Psalm 13 David is anguished because he is experiencing adversity. That should be a relief to all of us that find ourselves up against it at times. Because if God saw David through this, would he not still do the same for us? The first four verses are just wrought with anguish and distress, but then the turn verse 5 but I have trusted But I have trusted. In what? In my ability to pull myself up by my bootstraps? Nope. In my resilience reserves that I have built up over time. But I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He he has dealt bountifully with me, not me, but He. We'll wrap up today with another comment from Augustine concerning verse five because this very thing that a man be not moved, and that he abide fixed in the Lord, he should not attribute to self, lest when he glorifies that he hath not been moved, he be moved by this very pride. What are we to do when we're lost in a state of lament? Stop looking at and to ourselves and start looking at and to our gracious, merciful, and wholly capable Heavenly Father.

Kyle Thompson sets the tone for the episode by addressing the challenging nature of the upcoming discussion:
"All right, guys, let's buckle up for a depressing week because we're going to be covering the Psalms of Lament." [00:20]
He acknowledges the inherent darkness present in these psalms but emphasizes their importance in understanding and combating spiritual adversity.
Kyle openly shares his affinity for exploring the "darker and sadder side of things," a sentiment that aligns with his mission at Undaunted Life to help men "push back darkness."
"God put me on this planet to equip men to push back darkness. Men like you to push back darkness." [00:24]
He appreciates the Psalms of Lament for their honesty and depth, highlighting how these scriptures allow individuals to express genuine grief and sorrow while ultimately fostering a deeper trust in God.
"They're incredibly raw and honest. These psalms express grief and sorrow and distress and duress. But they very often culminate in a hunger for and a trust in our holy, mighty, powerful, and loving God." [00:24]
Kyle focuses on Psalm 13, presenting it as a quintessential example of a lament psalm that transitions from despair to hope.
Kyle reads Psalm 13 in its entirety, capturing the psalmist David's heartfelt plea to God amidst personal turmoil:
"A Psalm of David. How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? ... but I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me." [00:24]
Kyle emphasizes the raw emotion conveyed by David, noting how it resonates with listeners facing their own adversities.

Drawing from Augustine's commentary, Kyle interprets verse 2 to highlight the inevitability of adversity:
"How long shall I place counsel in my soul is as if it were said, how long shall I be in adversity?" [Approx. 01:30]
He reassures listeners that just as God supported David through his hardships, the same divine assistance is available to them.
Kyle identifies the pivotal shift in Psalm 13 at verse 5, where David moves from desperation to steadfast trust in God's love.
"But I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation." [Approx. 02:15]
He clarifies that this trust is not based on personal resilience but entirely on God's unwavering support.
"But I have trusted in your steadfast love. My heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because He has dealt bountifully with me, not me, but He." [Approx. 02:30]
Concluding his analysis, Kyle cites Augustine's caution against attributing unwavering trust to one's own strength, warning against the pride that can arise from self-reliance.
