1798. Did I do that? 1798. Alexander Hamilton. Alex. Alexi, as we call him Alexis, was controlling President John Adams cabinet.

But after more French provocation, Alexander finally got his army. So people don't want America to have an army. A lot of people.

Earlier in his career, Alexander seemed more pro immigration, arguing during the constituent Constitutional Convention against a law that allowed only American born men to be members of Congress. Okay, so what was he?

Federalists controlled Congress and did all they could to stop immigration and stifle free speech, especially papers critical of the Adams administration. And Alexander is delighted with what the French quasi war was helping the Federalists achieve. Adams had asked Washington to be head of the army again should war with France happen. And Washington agreed.

So Adams wanted Henry Knox for inspector general. His. He's popped up a couple times.

His Alexander loving cabinet disagreed, of course, because Right. When Adams cabinet handed him a list of officers for the army which listed Alexander as inspector general, Adams forgot the list, which he was supposed to sign before a trip home. And he then rewrote it, demoting Alexander. But Washington said that if Adams didn't give the position to Alexander, he wouldn't lead the army. And so Adams gave in.

That's such a weird relationship those two had.

Alexander was, quote, being crammed down my throat.

And he grew increasingly upset at Alexander's scheming in his administration.

They didn't like the embrace of Great Britain or the desire for a standing army. And they were put off by the Alien and Sedition Acts. Aaron Burr took notice and began organizing his political allies like no one had before. Holding street rallies at which he and other charismatic Republicans spoke, choosing Republican candidates he knew would have a good name recognition and conducting voter research.

Alexander's Federalist friends begged him not to publish it. But Alexander was incapable.

He did not mention that Philip was upset about things I said about Alexander.

A few Years later, in 1804, Burr was also on the outs with his party. After angering Jefferson and losing Southern support, he knew he would not be on the ticket in the next election. So he ran for governor of New York. Alexander was afraid Burr was looking to switch to the Federalist Party or to create his own party made above the disillusioned, which there were a of lot, lot a lot, if you can imagine. When Burr went to a Federalist banquet in New York, Alexander was sure of it, knowing, noting that many Federalists had, quote, embarked with zeal and support of Mr. Burr. So he's Alexander. So papers began viciously slandering Burr regularly. Okay, probably written by Alexander. They echoed the exact words he'd used against Burr in the past.

So Hamilton is afraid that Burr is going to, you know, kind of of again. It's sort of about people finding out how big of a piece of shit he is. So he thinks, oh, he might be a Federalist, but really what he's doing is he's taking the disenfranchised Federalists, the people who feel like maybe they don't have a party anymore. And he's sort of speaking to that disillusionment and potentially gaining popularity. And Alexander, that's sort of a threat.

He could. He could gain people from both parties.

[Dave Anthony]

Right.

[Gareth Reynolds]

And be a problem, start a new party.

And, yeah, God forbid that happens.

Oh, boy, we got to kill this guy. So after he goes to that party, Alexander rises up and starts writing these letters, exact words that he used against spur of the Past accusing him, a widower, of consorting with male prostitutes, attending parties with black people, and turning his home into a house of prostitution. Berger's like, what? What are you doing?

[Dave Anthony]

Oh, my God, that guy would be so popular now. That is gonna be a presidential candidate outside of the he's gay and hanging out with black people and he's got progressive policies.

[Gareth Reynolds]

Yet Burr, again, his whole thing is don't respond and he just keeps running a clean campaign. That's his deal. I'm not gonna mudsling now. There's not a federalist on the ticket. So Alexander was attacking just for the love of the game. Right. He backed a weaker Republican candidate. And the slander Alexander's friends made against Burr, who he started out incredibly popular and was the assumed winner. But the slander works and Burr is defeated by so many votes, it's unlikely his political career, whatever a political career, would ever recover. Like he just gets crushed because they just lied and lied and lied. Shortly after newspaper article reported Dr. David Cooper, Burr reported a Dr. David Cooper said that Alexander made an insulting remark about Burr at a private dinner

that he said that Burr was a, quote, dangerous man who ought not to be trusted.

Alexander's father in law, the rich guy, Philip Schuller, was angry about the leak and wrote a rebuttal saying Alexander would never say that because he had promised to remain neutral. Troll.

Dr. Cooper, the Guy who leaked the thing in the first place, responded that he was not lying and added, quote, I could detail to you a still more despicable opinion which General Hamilton has expressed of Mr. Burr. So Burr doesn't pay attention, but then he hears about it months later, Right? And he writes to Alexander, he didn't care about being called dangerous, but the word despicable implied that Alexander had been going after his character and behavior. And he demanded that Alexander give him, quote, a prompt, an unqualified acknowledgement of denial of saying such a thing. And rather than deny it, Alexander nitpicked, asking what Burr meant by the word despicable. If he didn't know, he refused to confirm or deny anything. Burr said Alexander was being insincere and explained what he meant by despicable, giving Alexander another chance to deny It.

By the way, this is Alexander's dream. He's like, oh, letters back.

Alexander would not. He dismissed advice from a couple of men on how to word his reply to avoid a duel and keep everyone's honor intact. And instead he wrote back dismissively, quote, I have no other answer to give than that which has already been given. Later, Nathaniel Pendleton said Alexander had made up his mind to duel long before the exchange of letters was over because he has nothing left to live for.

And if anything doesn't get it back in the public's view. Right, a winner.

Like you just tap it and it goes off. Alexander knew. So they review the rules. They were asked if they were ready and both responded present. And then the first shot was fired. There's different versions of who shot first. Pendleton said the pistols fired seconds apart. Days later, he said Burr had fired the first shot and Alexander's only shot after he had been shot from reflex.

Alexander was shot and fired after.

Yeah, like it cost him to shoot because it's a hair. Hair trigger. Van Ness said Alexander shot first and Burr at Burr and missed and burst. Stumbled, then readied and shot and he hit Alexander. Both seconds. Both seconds. And several seconds elapsed between first and second shots. And so sorry, let me say that again. Both seconds said several seconds elapsed between the first and second shots. So that's. That they agree on. And it seems unlikely that it happened. As Pendleton said later, that's Alexander's guy, right? Historian Andrew Burstein, quote, Hamilton brought the pistols, which had a larger barrel than regular dueling pistols and a secret hair trigger bigger and were therefore much more deadly. Hamilton gave himself an unfair advantage in their duel and got the worst of it anyway. But we're never. We never will know. We're just not going to know either way. Alexander was on the ground. Pendleton and Burr looked shocked and regretful. He tried to run to Alexander but was stopped by Van Ness, who pushed him toward the waiting boat.

And Burr yelled, quote, I must go and speak to him. Before the boatman rode away.

Alexander Hamilton reads like a catalog of the ills of modern government. An out of control, unaccountable monopolistic bureaucracy in Washington D.C. the demise of the Constitution as a restraint on the federal government's powers. The end of the idea that citizens of the United States should be the masters rather than the servants of their government. National debt, corporate welfare and central economic planning and political control, control of the money supply which have instigated boom and bust cycles in the economy. Alexander Hamilton was a brilliant mind with boundless energy and ambition. Arguably, no other founder has had a bigger impact on society than he has, but that impact has been almost universally negative. From the perspective of those that would like to think of America as the land of the freedom.

And I think the thing that we have been so hypnotized into believing for so long that there are ways out of what's coming or out of this, you know, nightmare. And we are now being confronted daily and regularly with the idea that there actually isn't. And that would be something that would probably make a good musical. But instead you get instead. I mean, I, I, I really, really, I wonder how much, you know, I mean, if you're like someone who writes a musical about this guy that achieves such wild success, I mean, it is, it's like you're getting people who clearly have an open space in their minds available for some sort of historical understanding and you fill it with this sort of shadow. Are you ever able to confront the damage you've done? Probably not. So he probably lives in a world of delusion, of this is okay, because it, it's not like it ruins things necessarily or directly, but there is a correlation between believing in some dumb like this and where we are now. I mean, this, he's so trumpy. Stephen Millery.
