John Olson has spent almost 20 years helping people change their lives through fitness. He's the co-founder of Individual Fitness, co-owner of two locations, and by every outward measure, the picture of health. What most people don't know is where he started.John was the "fat kid" in school. As a young adult, he was overweight, an alcoholic, and a smoker. He didn't grow up an athlete. He didn't walk into the gym confident. His story began the way so many of our members' stories begin, with a moment of reckoning. In John's words, he "saw Jesus." A near-death experience (or what he believed was one at the time) cracked something open, and he decided to try. You'll hear in this episode that what worked for him was one small step at a time. No big overhaul, no big transformation. What Daria and John unpack in this conversation:The moment John knew something had to change — and why fear, not motivation, was the first moverHow he started (spoiler: not with a six-week challenge or a punishing plan)What "food noise" actually is, why so many people feel ashamed of it, and why John still battles it todayThe practical techniques he uses to quiet the noise and stay on track — the ones he shares with clients tooWhy walking into a gym is one of the hardest first steps, and what he wishes every intimidated new member knewWhat almost 20 years in the industry has taught him about coaching, community, and staying human through it allThis episode will resonate with anyone who has ever felt afraid to start, ashamed of where they are, or exhausted by the mental battle around food. John is proof that the story doesn't end where it starts — and that the fight doesn't fully go away, but it does get workable.Where to find Johnny:You can train with Johnny right here at DSC. He coaches Recharge once a month, and every Saturday he leads the Hyrox training camp. You can also find him at his Individual Fitness location in Concord. Come meet the man behind the story.
