A
Thank you so much, Dawn. That was so very kind and I appreciate you and I'm so happy to be here. So honored.
B
Well, I appreciate your time. I know you're busy, and I know it's not easy to take time out during the day like this. So I'm gonna try to get as much info out of you as I possibly can in the time that we've got today. You have a lot going on as I listed there. And I am kind of the same way as you where I like to have a lot of different things going on. But you know, you have to be careful because you got to balance A lot of things. And you got to make sure you take things in stride. So first, before we even get into everything that you do and to. Why, Just. Just start with your background a little bit. You've got a pretty. Pretty awesome background. So let's start from where you came from and why you kind of came to be what you are today.
A
I think that's perfect. And I. And I'm grateful that this is how we begin, because it's how I always love to start every moment of my life, no matter where what I'm doing, and that is that. I am 9th generation in my lineage, as you mentioned. I'm a doctor of acupuncture and Chinese medicine. So herbal medicine has come in my lineage nine generations. I'm the first woman in my lineage to be guardian of the formulations, which is the knowledge and the wisdom of ingredients, but also a formulation. Hence why I'm sure we'll discuss it later. I even have my lab, JBK Wellness Labs. I contract manufacturer all these products. But it's all rooted in whether our clients decide to use Eastern medicine or not. It's rooted in that wisdom and that understanding. But a little bit more about me that kind of encompasses everything of who I am. And the gratitude I have for all of my ancestors that came before is that I teach what I call the three M's, and that's what's been passed down. That's our ancient medicine, right? And so I am one lineage. There are others, not so many. But it's all rooted in thousands upon thousands of years of medicine. And the way I describe and teach medicine is maybe a little bit different in our Western culture than what people totally understand. But listen, more and more people are open, and that is medicine as I just described, right? What we put into our bodies. Food is the greatest medicine, as well as the formulations that we would put onto and into my day job, as I call it. But actually, what I teach is that there's two more medicines, if you will, and I use that word purposely. After decades of teaching and wishing to do my best to share what's been passed down to me, and that is movement. Movement is medicine. And I know that means a lot to you as well, Dylan. I'm sure we'll talk about that as well. But specifically, what I teach is qigong, which is a traditional martial arts. I've come to find that people are not as familiar with qigong, but they know Tai chi, which, listen, I go with the dao, the universe. That's where it's all rooted. So whatever you want to call it, as long as we're on understanding. But qigong in like a couple of seconds is the first form of any exercise. I mean, we're talking 10,000 years ago, you know, is when it's first recorded or, you know, passed down and then recorded that. That this form of movement, of medicine is movement became. And it's the very first breathwork as you know it. And so I teach that as well. And finally, the third pillar, the third M is mindset. I call it living meditation, which is the book that I wrote, I think I sent to you. It's Myungsung, the Korean Art of Living Meditation. But just remember, living meditation, and it's the understanding that our mind and our thoughts equals our habits, the way we live life. Also, of course, we all understand and acknowledge this now very much is what leads us down a path of health or imbalance. So that's. That's who I am, and that's what I. What my duty is, as far as I'm concerned. And I've accepted.
B
I love that and I love the focus.
A
It's.
B
It all kind of revolves around self, right? Because the. The mental aspect does tie in to the movement and the food, because there's a lot of mental struggle when it comes to all of that. So if you. And this is the way that I look at it for a lot of people, and I'm no psychologist by any stretch of the imagination, but I know the importance of mind over matter and everything else first. Because if you're not right here, it's impossible to be right anywhere else, right?
A
Absolutely.
B
So do you tend to focus on, like, the mindset first? Do you have an order of importance here or is it just all tied together?
A
No, I've been doing this for 20 years, Dylan, and I'm not sure anyone's asked me, or at least I can't recall anyone asking me that exact question. And what a good one. You know, everything is always changing. That's the root of it all, right? So we have the yinor to dao and then comes yin and yang. And you know, we won't go into that right now, but what that. What that shows us is there's always a balance, right? No matter what, within our bodies, amongst each other, in nature, around us. That's what yin and Yang is, day and night. Happiness, sadness, failure, success. Like, they have to go together. And why I'm responding in this way is it probably adjusts, right? There's times in my life when I really Take a pause and think about what you just asked me, that maybe I have to prioritize a little bit more my physical self right through movement. But all of that is also interconnected. But the way I'd like to respond to you right now is that truly in my life right now, and I'm noticing that's with a lot of people, maybe everyone, to be honest, right now, but we would all agree that really the mindset aspect is our mind, our thoughts, how we're handling everything, everything in our life, in the universe around us and in our life around us. The mindset is so incredibly important. Probably also at this point in my life, I'm in my 40s, I have my children, I'm running businesses, so it leads to everything. So, yeah, I might say that the mindset aspect, that living meditation, but again, I can't not say it. It all connects though, so.
B
That's right. I totally get it. I've spent more time kind of digging in and focusing on mental health and mental side of things. I'm a spiritual guy. I know everybody's not that way. Well, I share like, for me personally, the more that I've developed that trust in God and my faith, the easier it's been to handle stressful situations and realizing that if you just give it, then it's a lot easier to receive it when it comes. If you're just in the belief that it will. Right. And I think that if that's not you, that's fine. But I think that finding a balance in your mind to where you can alleviate stress by taking your mind elsewhere and just believing instead of causing stress that you have to ultimately understand is not going to change the scenario at all. All it is going to do is make your health bad and make the situation far worse. Instead, what I think would be the best advice, and I want to hear your thoughts on this, is to instead, if you think that there's a stressful situation, is to have a plan, think about a plan on, okay, if this does go awry, this is the plan. But if it doesn't, and I plan on it being good, this is what we're going to do. And just be ready as opposed to being stressed and then being double stressed when you're not ready. If something bad does happen, which inevitably will, and you just. It's adversity. Right?
A
Yes. Yes. I love all of that. I could not agree more with everything that you just said in my personal life and rooted in what I teach. First, I want to acknowledge with you that, yes, without My faith, without my. My connection, not just a belief to me, it's. It's real. It's my entire life. Without my connection to higher power, to God, that life would be incredibly challenging, maybe even not possible, to be honest. And I don't even say it that strong, but I feel like we're there right now. And so let me just say it. Without that, I don't know if I could survive. And listen, I'm known to be one who can survive a lot. That's the truth. I have a feeling you are as well, Dawn. So let me start. All right? And yes, I. I love that you just said that. It's not something that I share all the time. So I'm taking a pause here again to think about how I'd like to communicate this. But what you just said is that once again, I go back to the dao, and that's in all three of those pillars. You know, the medicine, how we take of our bodies, mind, according to that, the movement, the mindset, our life is that there's always going to be ups and downs, and so stress is going to be inevitable in our lives. And more and more our society, our culture, is acknowledging how much we do have to be aware of that, you know, and to the best of our ability, balance with that. Or it can be the number one thing to make us sick a hundred percent. You know, the way we look, the way we feel, mentally, physically, spiritually. Again, I could not agree more. One of the things that comes to mind, and I love that you even gave the two options, because I. I actually practice that and teach that a lot as well, that sometimes I call it short circuiting or part of something, especially certain types of personalities, which I know I can be and you can be, and probably a lot of people listening who do want to achieve a lot. And we make choices to be going down paths that, you know, the entrepreneurial, the. So many different things, making sure not to scatter. But it's important to us. We have a lot to share, and that. That matters to us. Or maybe it's not even so much that it's just part of the balance of, you know, whether it's being a mom or a dad with children or whether it's, you know, different relation, whatever it is, we have a lot on our plate. And so sometimes we can find our minds if we don't have that training. Because to me, the movement that I teach is a way that we train our minds, right? So we train our body. We know how important that is working Out. But if you start to think about it as I have to train my mind, our mind is so powerful and of course it's necessary. But if we don't learn how to take control of our own mind, which is the only thing we can control in this life and our own mind, body, right, then life can become very chaotic. And so what I find again is that we can short circuit is what I, what I started to say, where we kind of get obsessed. We. We make ourselves so stressed, we can't stop thinking about. And then once you become more aware, what you start to feel is it starts to drain you. It starts to take your, your attention away. This is where we are not living in the present. When we are, when we are in that space, we cannot achieve everything that we wish to the best of our ability. So sometimes, again, going back to what you just said, I find it to be very helpful to take a breath. I really do connect very much in my own personal life. And when I teach that, that being aware of ourself through movement, through breath work, because it's the quickest way in my experience and what my ancestors and the great teachers have taught us, to make ourselves present. Right. And that's why I teach qigong. It's the quick. Oh, it's an incredibly quick way to literally breathe in. You exhale. Sometimes I like to even talk out loud to myself. You know, right now, this is a really challenging situation right now. This is really hurtful. And you literally say it out loud right now. I understand that I have this thing at work that I really have to focus on. There's something about even saying it out loud and acknowledging it, having our mind focus and become present, that our mind, we're training our mind to stop just going, going, going and going in all the different directions. So we're getting something super specific right away. But I love it because hopefully this is a good tool for people. People. And I agree with you. It's like we know that we have this goal, right? But getting to that goal, that is where I say I'm of the Dow. Life is always changing. And if I've achieved any of the success in my life, it's being prepared for that. And it's not always a comfortable feeling. But when we are able to remind ourselves that we do have to constantly balance that we have to be able to pivot when, when we can keep bringing ourselves back to that because it's a constant journey, we will find that that life will become a lot less stressful. Hence we'll Be able to be more present. We will be able to achieve a lot more because we've given ourselves the space to have more energy to focus on the things that we actually want to achieve. And part of that is also looking at the other end. I know I want to go here at this moment in time. This is my strategy to get there. But I'm going to take this breath because guess what, Something just happened that, that might throw me off that, that particular path to get there. But I see my eye is on the prize. Okay, I take a breath and sometimes I agree with you. Sometimes it's helpful to go to the worst case scenario. It sounds funny, but that is a way that I have found. You can become present and you can make your brain stop short circuiting. If I go here and it's the worst case scenario, usually what will happen is that is going to be incredibly challenging. That's not what I wanted. But guess what? It's going to be okay. I will survive. Sometimes it's even important, and I'm being a bit extreme here, but I find a lot of people are going through some extremes right now in their life, you know, in many different ways. That's why I want to go there. It's also important for us to be kind to ourself. And this is a phrase that I just recently started talking. I'm a warrior, okay? So many, many decades of my life, I would not find myself saying this because I would bulldoze through. But I find that it can be really helpful at times to, when you take that breath to remember, I have walked through this before. And you remember that you thought you couldn't get through. And we all have those. Some of them were. Some of us have more than others. And guess what? We got through it. And finally, even this very powerful conversation that I find very effective once again, right, right now in particular, is to remember that life is short. You know, kind of right off the bat. One of the most challenging moments of my entire life is when I lost my father unexpectedly. It's going on nine years now, so it's been a bit of time, but sometimes it can feel like just yesterday. He was my greatest teacher. He is what he is, a main teacher who cast all of this down to me. And it was very unexpected. And I found myself saying one day in an interview, when I just kind of connect and let things go naturally, that was one of the greatest gifts he ever gave me. What a crazy thing to say. Even when I said it, I thought, what did I just say? But It's. It's correct. It's an honor of him and all the life and sacrifice that he gave that. Losing him in that one moment, I always remember because exactly what I just said. We are here right now and guess what? We do not know what life will be. And I don't mean to sound so daunting, but it's important I find that literally we could not be here tomorrow or a person that we might be in conflict with, or it might not even be here tomorrow. So what am I going to do in this moment to make sure that I live my life to the very fullest? That if I were to go tomorrow, I would look back and think, you know what? I am so glad that I didn't let that drain my energy. I am so glad that did not take me away from my significant other, from my children, from this incredible project that I care about. It's about preserving our energy. So that was kind of a whole thing.
B
But no, it's good, you know. No, no, no, this is good stuff. And, and I'll tell you so. And I talked to you about this before. My dad also passed unexpectedly. And it's been about just going on. Well, it was 10 years in February. And you know, I spent so many years in this, like, shell of where I refused, where my mom would bring them up or things and I'd be like, I just don't want to talk about it and, and just do these things. Things. And then as I started to get better in my faith and I sat one day and I said, okay, this is ridiculous. I'm letting this go. And instead of doing this, I'm going to tell you how thankful I am for all the years I had and remember everything he taught me and remember everything that we did and how blessed I was to have such a dad. And since I did that and released that, I have become a much more patient person in everyday life, a much more understanding and far happier in general because it's not in the back of my mind anymore. I always say, you know, I wish he could see me now because I was such a screw up before and now I've, you know, made amends. But on the same time, I still feel good about it because I know I'm doing what I was taught and what would make him proud. And so once you wrap your mind around that and I. And I wonder, in the Bible and in the teachings I was reading about consolation and desolation, so when everything's great and it's just fine and dandy, you're in consolation, right? But you don't know what. When the desolation could come and it could be right when you're in the midst of being extremely happy. And it's how you handle that. And I got tested with that last year and I spent three or four months in wretched wreck mode. And then when I figured it out that this is a test so that you're prepared for what's going to come later and you'll be equipped to handle it. And when I figured it out, I actually understand now. And I'm much more prepared in stressful situations to say, hey, it's gonna be fine, dude. It always is. It's how you handle it. And you can make it 20 times worse or you can slow the burn if you just handle it right.
A
I really appreciate you sharing. I think that is something that so many, if not everyone can resonate with. And that's exactly right. Oftentimes I'll say why are we making life any harder than it has to be? You know, since I. Because I am very. Because I do have these teachings. Listen. Whether it came down in my lineage or not, it's always a choice. In fact, we keep. We've said numerous times now that it all comes down to the self. First we're. Listen the number the. I have eight keys of living meditation in the book behind me, right? The first key is know your true self. Because everything starts there, period. And we have to be aware of that. Right? And so I just want to acknowledge that cuz we've said it enough times. I also just heard you say, you know, it can happen so fast. And that's the whole thing about balance, right? It really is. So often it is. It's just one. It's like a fine line and then it switches and it's a fine. But guess what? Once you plug into that and you know that is literally life, then you also can balance with. That's the power, you know. And actually that's a key that I don't always talk about in the eight keys. Cause I have to choose which ones. You know, I love key which I'm sure we'll talk about. We already have. It's be like bamboo. That being flexible and soft actually can be the most powerful. Even in comparison to being strong and bulldozing through which we've all done both. But the key that I'm hearing us talk about right now is. Is the key number six of living meditation is change your reality for the better. Okay, that must sound like a bunch of words In a sentence to some people. It didn't with you, Dylan, and I appreciate that. But one of the most important things about that is that I was taught and it's been handed down based on the kind of the Taoist which way back. It's not a religion, that's a philosophy of life. It's just principles that exist. One of the reasons I love it is that you can be any religion or not even believe or just believe in nature. And all these principles do come down to just certain things that don't change. And that's what a principle is. But what was taught to me and how I named it, this key number six. Because my ancestors didn't do that. They didn't say, well, key number one was no. They passed down all of these. And I tried to organize it for us. But change your reality for the better, literally can be a flip of a switch. You know, all the things leading up to that moment, all the things that you're going to do to either change a habit or stay on whether it's good or bad, all of those things, it really comes with one decision. And then you set your. A lot of times you set your mind in that moment, and that's how you move forward. Like it's. It really is. Sometimes when I speak, I know it can sound. You know, a lot of these principles are so profound, but it can sound so simple. But when we do, remember that at the end of the day, it actually can start at a very simple place. You know, it also takes away a lot of the stress. You know, it's everything we've been talking about. You know, here I am. What am I going to do with this? Am I going to make this 10,000 times harder, which we don't even realize we do? How often is so much harder than we need to do? Is it worth it? That's why I say that. Is it worth it? So this now has made you this upset. Is it worth it? Is it worth it to keep it? What is your point like? And the beautiful thing is, this is the key number one. Know your true self. You can have this conversation. I don't care if you look crazy or not. I invite. I give everyone permission to do it. Go and talk to yourself in a room because it's helpful. Something about words, right? You put it out into the universe, you hear yourself, it becomes more solid. And I invite everyone to do this. Is it worth it that I'm doing? Do I care that much? Sometimes it's hard for people to let it go. But the more and more we train our minds to do this, the more I just naturally even do it. I take that breath. I heard you say it. I'm huge on this. I let it go. Why am I carrying this with me? What is it doing? You know, I joke around sometimes. It's just gonna give me more wrinkles. It's gonna age me. Cause sometimes it's funny to go there, right? The vanity of it. But listen, why don't. Why can't we care, you know? But obviously much deeper than that. Is it going to take away that joy in my life? Is it going to take away time? Like, what is your choice at the end of the day? Because you're the one making the choice. You can blame everything and everyone around you, you know, and maybe some of that. There's reasons for it all. But at the end of the day, does it actually matter? And if we live life that way, I guarantee that on the day we leave this earth, we will look back and be very thankful. If, in fact, we choose to let a lot of these things go, you know, it doesn't mean we brush around the rug. We just realize what's important and what isn't. It's. It's just a. It's a habit. It's a lifestyle. That's the living meditation, you know, it's very important.
B
You know, one of the things that I've noticed that's made. I don't want to say time slow down, because as you get older, the time does fly a lot faster. But what I will tell you is this, what's made my time seem like it. It is a little bit longer, is developing a deeper appreciation for everything around me. And I'm talking the most basic of things. I'm talk. And when I get up in the morning every day, and I got. When I see the. And I'm in Iowa right now, and I'm looking at green grass that I used to think, like, I live near farms and stuff, you know, and. And seeing how clear the sky is. And I. I'm so grateful. Even when I leave the gym, I. I say a little prayer of thanks, of thanks for letting me do what I love to do and to be able to take care of myself where a lot of people can't or a lot of people don't have these luxuries of the nice gym to go to. When you stop taking things, small things, for granted and come to the realization it really makes your mind clearer, it tends to make the time. I don't know. It's Just it's more content of a life, I feel. And there's a lot more happiness all the way around in things that you do throughout the day that you may think are, you know, like you're pessimistic about or you think are annoying or you just hate doing. And then you start to value your routines and the things that you get to do and experience every day. And then when you do something really epic, it means even more to you, you know, And I just have found that over the years, the things that I used to think were just either ridiculous to look at or think about, or now things that are like dominant of my day that I have to have every day. The most basic of little things.
A
Oh, I love that. To me, the word that keeps coming, because I said words to me are very important to be as conscious as we possibly can, you know, even in the things that we think and the words that we use and the word that keeps coming is connection to me. When you're saying that, I also practice, you know, there's a reason why so many people talk about gratitude. And, and one of my favorite things to, to acknowledge and it has to do with words as well, is that we use gratitude, being present. You know, there's all these things that we say and sometimes they can almost even become cliche. But then I erase that because especially with these ways of living, these words, if we actually pause and think about that for a minute, even the word meditation, what is it we talk about all the time? Or calm? What is it? Gratitude? Why is it important? You know, even taking that little pause, which is literally the practice of gratitude and awareness, it absolutely gives us life. It absolutely just makes us connected it very quickly. Even when you're speaking that way, I know in my. I close my eyes because it's more of a something we feel in our heart than it is that we think in our mind. And there's always that balance as well. But you know, when we do take the moment and teach ourselves, train our minds to take these moments, you know, I am so grateful right now for my health. We've all been so sick. And then right after we're sick, we have those moments. Whether it lasts for a couple of seconds, a couple days, it depends on what we choose to do. Let's go there for a second. We are really sick. We can't function. We feel horrible. You know, some people live their whole life this way, depending on their conditions. That is exactly correct. But then right after, from. From many, most of us, that we can rebalance that we, we in that moment, like, oh my gosh, I'm so happy that I can, you know, get out of bed. I'm so happy that like I. I don't have that cough anymore, whatever it might be, that gratitude. But we can imagine if we bring this back for a minute, it just immediately connects us. That's why I said it. You can feel it in your body. It grounds us. And like it is that kind of like grounding into the earth, into the present moment. That's why to me, it's like I have to use my entire body to have this conversation for those who can't see me. And that's part of the movements that I teach too. Even that breath that you can feel your body settle your nervous settle system settle your brain waves, your brain function calm. Because when things are calm, which is to me, that's one of the things. I've never said it this way actually, but I find that gratitude does that. It does in a sense. As you were saying, maybe we can call it slowing things down, but it calms everything for a moment, right? That's the feel of it. So I'm so grateful that I'm alive. You feel yourself ground. You feel yourself connect in that one moment, you're that much more connected to everything around you because. Because that's what happens. So I'm. I could not agree more, Dylan. And that's what actually all of the three M's, which is all of life. That's just the way I kind of categorize it. As much as I'm of the dao and cyclical and of the balance, I also like logic and linear things, you know, reasons I like. Right. I mean, our brains work this way. Most of us in some way shape or form. That's why I like, like the three pillars. We can. We can wrap our head around that. But all three of those things in some way shape or form, that's what they do. They help everything to function properly. The medicine, how we take care of ourselves, the mindset, the movement, the whole point of that, in a very Eastern medicine type of way of looking at things, right? Holistic, really what that means is we just look at our whole self, mind, body, spirit, emotions, everything. And so a lot of the. Not a lot of actually what every one of those pillars is founded upon. Even the way we eat is everything in balance, but also constantly keep kind of grounding, centering. You know, in Eastern medicine, it's all our digestion is where everything starts from our mindset. When we ground ourself and imprisoned. So it really is one of my favorite things is to keep kind of making things a little bit more simple for us in the moment to wrap our head around so that we can be consistent. Because that's. That's the key, right? And that's exactly what I hear us saying. These little steps, that's the living meditation. Every moment, right? We let think of meditation. Now, it's something everyone's aware of. Twenty years ago, by the way, when I talked about meditation, everyone thought I was crazy. Now everybody knows meditation, you know, just. Even if they've heard of it and they don't know what it is, what is it? I think everyone to some extent understands, okay, it's something that makes us better. Okay, let's just start there. But meditation, why does it have to be something that you just do in the morning? You know, why is it a stressful thing? I didn't have an hour to meditate. Forget it. When did our teachers teach us this? Who. Who made up that rule? That's my favorite thing. I don't know who made up that rule? It's not a thing. Why these practices? Why we take care of ourselves so that every moment that comes equals living meditation. We can balance with whatever comes to me, that is strength to me, that is being a warrior or whatever resonates, whatever it is that we wish to be. That's what it is. It's balancing whatever comes our way in that moment, preparing our mind, our body, our spirit, through the way we take care of ourselves, the way we train our mind and our body so that when we are faced with the challenges of everyday life, sometimes small, sometimes huge, what are we going to do? What choices are we going to make? And how is it going to affect the rest of our lives?
B
You know, I love it.
A
It's interesting.
B
Okay, so yes, you've said this now multiple times, and we have gone back and forth with it. But let's break it down a little bit, if you would. So my question is, and take this, however, in any way that you want to take it, to go with it on the answer. But when you're talking about Chinese medicine, Eastern medicine, and then we're talking about Western medicine, can you just give a little example of what exactly is the Chinese type medicine or Eastern medicine and how does it compare to Western medicine? What's some of the differences? Because I think that's an intriguing thing to discuss, that a lot of people, you know, how people have a misconception one way or another of what it is and what it's not. And I'm sure you get that a lot, but I would be curious to hear your thoughts and your breakdown of. Of that, please.
A
Absolutely. No, absolutely, Dylan. So. And I've done it enough times. It comes out differently every time a little bit. I know the main things that I think are important and, and yes, you know, people can utilize and it can be effective. So first and foremost, I want to all acknowledge Chinese medicine, Eastern medicine, what's the difference? Because some people may not even know I come from a Korean lineage. That's why I say Eastern or Oriental medicine, right? Because it's, it's beyond just China. But Chinese medicine was the very first. So I studied Chinese medicine. So that's just one thing I just want to acknowledge. But all in the same one way of understand. And also I want to acknowledge that a lot of people, especially many years ago, decades ago, where it was not as understood or accepted, if you will, that I am a proponent of both. I believe that there's a place for Western and there's a place for Eastern, and it is our place, job. I'm going to say it kind of strong, since our conversation is always that way, to do our very best to educate ourselves and to become aware to the best of our ability to know when to use what, at what different situations. And that's where the experts do come in. And so I'm going to touch on that a little bit right now. But at the end of the day, we're our own best doctor, meaning we're the only ones who truly know how we feel. So we have to be aware of ourselves. I must say that.
B
Right?
A
So in general, one thing we'll often hear is that Western medicine is very good at treating symptoms, right? Or like they don't always look at the root cause or where something comes from. Now, this is a very generalized statement. I don't love making these, but I want it to be very helpful. To some extent that's accurate. And to some extent, and to many extents rather, that can be incredibly important. You know, when it comes down to diagnosis, certain lab tests, to all of the different modalities and technology, we have to understand what's happening inside, go for it. If we need antibiotics, get the antibiotic, but know when that's appropriate and when it isn't. Right? For example, that's one. Or if we need a quick surgery or operation, you better believe we need Western medicine. I don't think anyone's gonna be complaining about Western medicine if they are in that situation. Right. So let's be whining about this, okay? It's again, very generalized. But let's just acknowledge Eastern medicine, our ancient medicines, okay? The holistic medicine really does focus on the consistency of it. People don't love to think about it that way, but it is that we hear oftentimes preventative, right? Wellness. Longevity is a word I've used forever. I literally now call my products that I just launched longevity potions. We can get into that maybe later. But that word longevity is the fact that we are human being, we live on this life. So how are we going to maintain our health? How are we going to pay attention to the way we eat, the things we put into and onto our body? Meaning the skin care, the body care, hair care. Again, I've been talking about this for decades. People have been talking about this for centuries. And now I'm so happy people are paying attention because it all matters. Okay? So going again just to Eastern medicine, once again, it all comes down to that balance of everything, right? And to break it down and just very quickly, it's all about, as I mentioned before, enabling our bodies, literally from every cell of our body. Our skin cells, the cells and our digestive system equals our organ systems, our muscles, our joints. And the main goal is to make sure that everything is functioning and it's optimum and everything is flowing properly. This is what I always love to teach. And one of the reasons I love to teach this is number one, it is the foundation of all Eastern medicine. But also it's a way that we can start to become aware of our own selves. Whether I'm teaching medicine movement or mindset, what that means is we can picture our body, all of our organs, everything is connected. And Yin and Yang exists in our body too. Like literally, this is Eastern medicine. 101 in a couple of minutes. A way of understanding. Like I said, Yin Yang first comes the universe. Our body is our microcosm of all this. Then there's Yin and Yang in the universe. I already mentioned, there's day and night, there's fast and slow. It's this dichotomy that always is together, no matter what. There's feminine, there's masculine. Without one, you can't have the other. In our body, we talk about qi and blood circulation. Qi is vital energy. Like I said before, 20 years ago, if I mentioned this, people would be like, okay, what planet are you from? Right? And I say that just to sizzle in her mind. I didn't mind. And now people are understanding this. More energy Is a real thing. It's one way of understanding it. In Eastern medicine, it's literally what pushes blood through our system. Of course, we have our pumps and our valves and all of our veins and our arteries, our heart. But the way Eastern medicine looks at that is you have your qi and your blood flow, okay, Then through our body. Just picture this is what I love to give people. All these meridians, these channels, just like our circulatory system that travel and are connected all within our body, okay? And our mind, same thing. And when you picture this, the ultimate goal, in conclusion, is that whatever the medicines you take, again, the food you eat, the movement that you do, the stress that you either allow into your life or you're able to balance through, allows us or. Or keeps us from everything functioning properly. It's like river systems going through our body, okay? And just like a river, that water has to flow properly for everything to be nourished in order to function properly. And when you have stress, when you have injury, when you have natural aging, all of a sudden those blockages within that river system occur. And so that's Eastern medicine. Eastern medicine, holistic medicine, focuses on constantly opening up that flow of everything. That's the fountain of youth. That's how I explain, like, how to achieve optimal beauty. It's everything. That's literally how I make the formulas in my lab for all the amazing skincare companies. That same principle, hopefully, that helps us understand and visualize literally how things work in our body. That's that.
B
Awesome. Well, thank you for the breakdown. Much appreciated. Yes, well, yes and no. I mean, it could probably go on a lot longer. So, you know, I think it was a good breakdown. And it's appreciated because there's. There's a lot of misconception on, I mean, everything. But it's nice to hear a nice explanation. So let's move forward here. So one of the things that's listed in your high amount of skill sets, I must say, is herbology. So what exactly does that mean?
A
Yes. So herbal medicine is like literally the materia medica. Somewhere behind me is my book of materia medica. And so that is, you know, it's plant medicine, herbal medicine, some boyly shape or form, if not in every way. Shape or form. Everything basically comes from a plant, right? That's our medicines that have been passed down for thousands of years. In Eastern medicine, people will often think of acupuncture, right? And then herbal medicine and. And they do. They go hand in hand. There's other things as well. There's some of the other modalities, right, that we're aware of now. Gua sha cupping, even the jade rolling. I mean, I brought gua sha and jade rolling into this country 20 some years ago. I should have made it more of a thing that, you know, I was part of this whole thing because people had any idea what it took to get all these tools in, but. I'm joking, but those are all like part of what Eastern medicine is, okay? And so herbal medicine is a huge part of it. But in this country, I find that oftentimes you'll find the acupuncturists, right? And they'll do a bit of herbal medicine. When you are in East Asia often, mostly you'll see you have your acupuncturist and then you'll have your herbal medicine doctors. Now, we both know how to do both. But herbal medicine is like the true herbologist that came before me and studied all of this. You know, they would go on to say very East Asian of them. You know, you could study one herb for your entire lifetime, and that's medicine, right? So it's our plant medicine, it's our botanicals. And so to kind of have us, in conclusion, wrap our head around this, Herbal medicine can be in the skin, Skin care that I make, you know, topical formulations. It's good for our digestion, our endocrine system. It's ba. It's medicine. It's recipes that are created from these botanicals. In my lineage, I have some secret recipes that have been handed down for so long. But ultimately all medicine is made in this way, in some way, shape or form, right? Just herbal medicine oftentimes uses the actual plant or certain parts of the plant. Where a lot of our medications nowadays in Western medicine will take certain and take out little constituents or. Or concentrate them. So that's one way of understanding it, right? But yes, herbology is basically all of the plants. We study them for years upon years. It is not easy. It's a lot to remember. But one thing that I really want people to understand is that from understanding each individual herb, true herbal medicine is knowing how to synergistically combine those herbs together. Which is how I even started my lab, why I even started doing what I do, because not many people understand that. And if you do not have a formula, again, whether it's skin care, hair care, body care, internal supplements for anything you can think of, if it is not formulated properly, no matter how great that ingredient, you're does not mean your body's going to Accept and absorb it. And so it really does not do anything for you and furthermore, can cause side effects. So that is the key that I want everyone to understand and what I educate about.
B
So I am a big proponent, and I want your thoughts on this. Of that every single disease or everything that there is out there, that God put a remedy on the earth for that. I. I don't care what any scientist says or anybody else or anybody. I really don't. And I do a lot of things based on science and a lot of studies and I do a lot of data, and I, you know, I'm all about that. But at the same hand, I am under that belief. And so you know how some people say, oh, that herbal snake oil and this crap, but I'm just like, yeah, unfortunately, there's some bad actors out there that make bad products and mismarket them. I don't disagree. Absolutely. Yes, yes. But I want your thoughts on the people that actually do it. Right. And the types of things that are out there that probably some of us don't even know about. And a lot of those would probably be in the Chinese medicine avenue, which I've actually learned about over the years. And I'm not saying that's the only place by any stretch, but how do you feel about that statement? Do you feel that's accurate?
A
Well, listen, I. Again, I've been doing this for decades. I was, like, born into this, quite frankly. I think I've come from lifetimes of this, you know, so it doesn't really ruffle my feathers. I just have always thought, you know, I just have to continue to learn how to communicate it better, because, let's face it, people forget that this medicine has existed for thousands upon thousands of years. You know, Western millstone is very new. Literally, very new. And so it's almost silly to me now, now that I'm in my 40s and have done this for so long, I'm just gonna say it as it is. And. And quite frankly, at least, you know, in my experience, speaking on panels, having many close medical doctor friends at this point, everyone acknowledges this. It's not like, you know, years ago, it was. It was silly to me because literally, these are medicines that have existed for thousands of years. Before Western medicine, it was not even a thing. So.
B
Right.
A
That be kind of connected to that which. I always love this because I am a realist. I'm very practical this way. There's a reason why this ancient medicine still exists, right? It's because it works. It would not be in existence for Thousands upon thousands of years. And now all of a sudden, our culture and society are looking at it so strong because it works. You know, there's places for it, there's places for modern medicine. We have to know how to use each. The beautiful thing is our world, this part of the world especially, is becoming much more integrated, which has always been my wish. And I do know and believe, and I'm grateful that I've been a part of this and I will continue to be, to educate properly to the best of my ability and share it in a correct manner. Because there is, you know, we were at a time where there was not very much information. And now I found that's the balance too. Things can be extreme now. Today there's an overwhelm of information which. Yeah, I'm so happy that people's eyes are open to so many of the ancient medicine, ancient philosophies, ancient tools and practices that I call them to make us healthy and to have optimal wellness and longevity. But now there's a lot of. A lot of people talking about it. And so the reality is there's always a balance. That's why it's very important to know who you're listening to, where this is coming from. You know, in East Asia, for example, you have a teacher, and that teacher you can follow where they came from. How long is this? That's why I even begin always. I am ninth generation. It reminds me, Janelle, you are not the one who came up with this. I do improve and enhance upon it. I have to do my job. But, you know, ancestors have been doing this for thousands, literally thousands of years. Do we understand? Like, it's not a. That's my answer, you know, that's why I won't even, you know, entertain that. Because it's, it's silly. It's existed forever and everything comes from the earth.
B
Yes, exactly. And I won't.
A
Nowadays, I can't even say that. But you know what I mean.
B
You know, I know what you mean for sure. And I won't take this too far. I will just say I'm privy to certain information that I know and I know how things work with the way that things are prescribed and. Or mis. Prescribed. And when something's beaten down your throat is the only way, or this is it, and when it's so over prescribed, where your body can become resistant to it, or it's prescribed for something you don't even need and there's alternative options and they're telling you there's none of this and none of that to me, if that's not the ultimate trigger point to tell you something's wrong, I don't know what is. And I am a firm believer in options. And hey, you know, we have free will. We were given that free will. And we also should be free to choose what we want to take and what we don't. We shouldn't be having the inability to get things that we need that can work. You know, I'm a Peptides person. I believe in the, the way that they're, most of them, you know, for the way that they can help and benefit and the way that they could be stigmatized or something, which is complete nonsense and not available. It's very bothersome to me that as all people that we can become restricted or told something that they, they too know is not true, just simply over money. And so I think it's important to have people like yourself that can provide education, provide products, provide details on alternatives and safer and perhaps more effective options.
A
Yes, yes. I mean, you're, and you as well, Dylan. I am certain there are so many, and myself included, so many people grateful that you opened the door and that you are part of this whole. We come together, all of us really, all human. And I should say that, you know, years ago, when it was much more taboo or if people were not aware, and I really was one of the first people to be talking about these things in like mainstream places, you know, one of the reasons I, I say it didn't really ruffle my feathers didn't mean it never bothered me, and I'm sure it did, but I certainly don't even remember those moments because it really came down to, listen, I'm a human being and you're a human being. And when all this began, they were human beings, like thousands of years ago even. And hopefully there will continue to be human beings. End of the day, we're all on the same page. You know what I mean? That's the truth. And, and we can. I hear you. I know that there's certain things and, and, and sometimes those moments in life which we've talked about a lot during our conversation, I'm grateful. Oftentimes it's those extreme moments, usually the ones that are very challenging for any of the reasons that help to open our mind or not. But if we so choose based on our free will, Key number one, know your true self. No matter what, we always have a choice. We so choose to open our eyes to other things. Right. And have more of an awareness, you know, that's, that's the key. And it's usually these moments. I mean, we all know that we just walk through, literally, as an entire world, a scare in all of our health. You know, I'm tired of even talking about it, but it's good to acknowledge it and thank God, you know, in many ways, that was the universe's way. I'm certain. I think we can all agree of doing something to make us open our eyes and expand our perspective, you know, and now, all of a sudden, right after that, in my 20 plus years of being an adult and doing this work, you know what I mean? I have never seen people more open, searching more for the understanding of ways with which we can have longevity and wellness. And so from a very, you know, extreme situation, look at where we are now, you know?
B
Yes, I agree for that.
A
There you go.
B
I am, too. You know, I'm grateful to be.
A
No, I'm grateful for them, too. And I'm like, all right, let me rephrase this. Maybe you didn't correctly.
B
No, I'm. I'm with you. I couldn't be more grateful to be in the space that I'm in, to be able to talk to people like you, to. To help spotlight people like yourself and to be able to be a part of it and to learn from and then build my own education to help others see and know that there's options and things are not always as they seem, and it's not a conspiracy every time. And so it's. It's important, I think, for these kind of conversations and to have nice, factual, evidential con. Conversation that people can listen to. So let's kind of shift over now while I still got some time left with you, to the. To JBK Wellness Labs and kind of what you have going on there. What was the motivation behind all of it and where it's headed?
A
Yes. Okay. Well, now you all have a pretty good understanding. I think of myself and what I do. But JVK Wellness Labs is named after my great grandfather, not myself. There's nothing wrong with naming his after yourself, but that's just a thing. Jinbo Kim. I did not think I'd be doing this if you asked me 20 plus years ago, I thought I'd have clinics, you know, I'd be treating patients, certainly in the integrative model. I was really hoping to bring that integration into our part of the world, but kind of fast forward, certainly not to stay there too long. The universe and several, you know, key individuals kept asking, janelle, you have got to put some of these formulas that have been passed down that I've already explained. The far, the knowledge, the wisdom, the actual formulas that have been handed down. You have to put this into the world. And so I started in the spa, the high end spa industry, like creating beautiful skincare formulations. The very first, if not the first, with herbal medicine, natural products. There was no such thing as clean beauty back then, so on and so forth. So that's how I started kind of creating formulations. I'd work with specific brands. Fast forward some time and people started asking us, myself, my husband, we've been doing this together for 20 years, building our labs to contract manufacture to make formulas for their companies. And so again, there's a lot in between, but that's how JBK came about. And so we started making formulas as contract manufacturers for other brands that are carried now in your credo, Sephora, Nordstrom, Neiman's, Ritz Carlton, all of the above. Where we do make skincare, body care, hair care, you know, internal supplements of all kinds, from your, you know, super greens to, you name it, digestive, hormonal, endocrine, type of balancing products. All rooted in everything that we talked about today. So that's jbk. So we make all kinds of products with amazing brands and companies that, that really care, you know. So that's awesome. Yes.
B
So what's next for you then, personally, that you are working on or making?
A
Yeah. So I recently launched, which I people have been asking me for for many, many, many years to have my own products. But I love what I do. It means so much to me.
B
Yeah.
A
But I started to notice that there are times such as here with yourself, where people would ask, or at events or wherever I might be that people would ask, you know, where can I get these products? And just by the nature of our business and how things work, I can't always tell you all the people we're working with. And so I decided finally to come out with a couple what I call hero products, Products that I know are incredibly effective and I want all people to have. At the very end of the day, that's my ultimate, like goal and duty, is to share as much as I can. And so I've come out with my own products. So it's by Dr. Janelle Kim called Longevity potions. Exactly. We're talking about years and years ago. They'd be like, oh, what are these potions you make? And so when, when my team asked me, you gotta make some products, Jennel, I said, fine, I'll make some you know, which is obviously not hard. I can think of some of my favorites and I thought I'm gonna call it potions, kind of just again to remember all the people who may have, you know, misunderstood. But I love it. Let's call em potions. They are miraculous. And longevity is a word that I've used forever. So it's a muscle and joint product, very good for any kind of, I mean martial artists or some of the very first athletes to understand the way our bodies work and how to utilize these formulas. I have a serum, a face serum and a face oil that are much strong enough to, or actually something I did want to acknowledge at our lab. While everything is rooted in the ancient medicine. So I bring that in for sure some of my like proprietary herbal formulations. But I love and think it's very important to combine in those formulations modern ingredients that are incredibly helpful for anti aging. I'm doing the quote signs for people who can't see me because there's no such thing. There's longevity. We're going to age basically. And so actually in my serum we have, we have peptides in particular hexapeptide, which is nature's Botox. Right. You don't name me. But combined with these beautiful herbs to give you an understanding. That's what we do when it's purposeful, when I know it's a proper formula. So that, and then you know, the body oil and at some point I'll come out with an internal supplement. So basically no matter who you are, if ever you know me, you can, you can access these formulas through my website or wherever you might find them so that at least everyone can have these core products in their life, which I, which I know will be good for you. So that's really exciting. Yeah.
B
Now that I've, I've seen this and I've seen. So I've seen a couple that use N A D and they're very effective, I know that for a fact in their skincare and I've seen some that are implementing Ghku copper which is also very effective. So that's awesome. I love that you're doing that on the muscle treatment thing that you've got going on. What are, do you mind sharing some of the ingredients in there or, or how it works?
A
Powerful ingredients. So people are aware of, you know, kind of topical. We were one of the first to make the roll on, you know, the type application which I love. It's quick, easy and it's effective. So it's a muscle and Joint what I call recovery gel. We have angelica, ginseng, achy ranthus, corydalis. These are powerful herbs that in a formula that have been handed down again for thousands of years. You know, they were once used by the martial artists who went to war in battle and like, didn't sleep for days. And this is how they kept themselves going. But I liked, and we make variations of this formulation for Olympians, professional athletes. In fact, we launched this product. I was very grateful and proud of this. It's at the NBA All Star game, you know, so it's a very effective formula, but not just for when you're in discomfort. That's something I really love to share for those athletes out there, including our young ones. Are you kidding? My boys, who are 12, eight, they love sports. I put it on them because the proper way of understanding these formulas is not just to wait till you have discomfort, although it's incredibly effective. You know, we're talking neck discomfort, shoulder, you name it. But actually, prior to your workout, I think I told you this, Dylan, Cause I, I know I sent you some as well. But actually, the correct way of using these types of martial artist formulas is that you put them on your muscles, joints, you know, quickly. But it becomes a habit before you're training. And what it does is help to prepare your muscles, joints to prevent further injury or any kind of injury, because it makes everything function and flow, just like I said. But it also can help with strength, endurance, stamina. So that's the proper way, you know. And another thing that I really wish to share that, because now it's out there, and I don't want to forget is also this type of formula could be amazing for women during their time of the month, which is a conversation that we are having much more frequently now, you know, just even on your or digestive issues. Because these herbs, they move and they nourish. So you can imagine that's good for many other things, not just, you know, recovery or discomfort. So I just want to acknowledge that. So I'm excited about that. I'm happy I finally did it.
B
Yeah, because, you know, I mean, aside from using like BPC157 for injuries and things like that, when it comes to just something that can actually help and work, like really work, that's not just like a band aid to a wound or magnifying it or whatever the case, it's, it's very hard to find. I've been through them all. I, I, you know, I've beaten myself up so bad. So I know And I've tried almost everything, and they're very few and far between. It's. It's a testament to your work and your effort that you found something that worked, you know, and it's appreciated. One more question for you. The CBD skincare line. So let's talk about that a little bit.
A
Oh, gosh, that's so funny. It's been. I feel like it's been a lifetime since then. I haven't heard that in a while. So, yes, I was it. I was a big. How can I say. Educator is the word that comes to mind when this CBD industry first started. Yes, Quite frankly, they came to me. They kind of the. The people who started the whole industry, and I kept saying no because I didn't know where they were going with this. And that's right when I was starting JBK and doing all the things. And it was. It was serendipitous, I will say that. And it has been so long as I thought about this. But I have to acknowledge that was another time in my life where I saw with this industry came people's eyes opening to a whole other side and understanding of our ancient medicine. Right? And so to kind of sum it all up, right, because we can go into so many. That could be a whole show in and of itself. Believe me. One of the reasons why I decided to jump in with the people who started this whole thing is to educate properly. Because ultimately, hemp is one of the 50 fundamental herbs of Chinese medicine. And that's why I finally agreed. Fine. Because when I saw them doing with CBD in general, so we never worked with THC or anything, you know, that had the psychedelic effects. And we really had to learn with these. With these people who started it, how to even create CBD and have it proper without those just everything. I mean, it's such a huge. But the reason why I decided to jump in some time ago now, many years ago now, is because I wanted to educate properly. Same thing. And I saw them helping kids. When I saw that, I thought, okay, fine, because there is absolutely a place for hemp, the actual cannabis plant, right, where we just use the CBD aspect, which is incredibly powerful. But again, it's one of the 50. I just said 50 fundamental herbs of East. East Eastern medicine, Chinese medicine. So there are. That is one of the best herbs to incorporate into formulations. Right. And I still do that with certain clients. But now I. I do. What I did in the beginning is say there's a time and purpose for this ingredient. No different than ginseng? No, different than, you know, you name any ingredient, that's the way we should look at it. But it's a very powerful ingredient, especially to help kind of calm our mind. Very good for discomfort. So just knowing how to use it, when to use it, and having a purpose, not just because it sounds cool and it's the thing. So. Yes, so I was a part of that. I haven't thought of.
B
Awesome.
A
And we still create products that utilize it with purpose.
B
You know, do you find that it has a really strong effect on like anti aging or what is the. The main effect on the cbd? I'm just curious because I'm so well versed on skin care. I've been doing it so long, but I haven't, you know, really dug into the. The facts behind the CBD aspect of it. So I'm very curious.
A
Yes. Now it has. It has properties in it just like any of the other very fundamental herbs. And every herb, for that matter, every herbal ingredient, every plant medicine, botanical, whatever you want to call it, has properties in it. And so by nature, it is very powerful at kind of rebalancing and homeostasis is the thing that I talk about a lot. And so that's an incredible herb. If you think of creating a formulation and it's like this beautiful recipe where all. All the ingredients work together. I used to say in herbal medicine, we almost call it. There's one way. You know, thousands of years ago or centuries ago, they called it like an army. They'd build an army of ingredients, which I love that. And you can picture it, you know, you have the. The king or the queen, and then you'd have the general, and you'd have all the soldiers, and every one of them plays a part. One of my favorite things to. That's like the first delivery system, you know, about skincare, Dylan. So there you go.
B
Yes.
A
And CBD is. Can be a huge. Play a huge role in that formulation. So for skincare, is. Can be so good at calming the skin. It can be very good for longevity and the simple sense that it is a powerful herb to create that homeostasis or that balance within the cells within your body. Um, also another, because you had asked me what it's good for. Certainly it's very good for sleep. Are you kidding? For calming the mind and sleeping, calming the nervous system. Of course, we could. I'll just say it of THC and, you know, the other kind of side of this. But CBD does not do that. But it does have all of those properties of certainly calming the mind and the body, creating like that much more homeostasis in our nervous system and in our chi. So it is, it's an incredible ingredient that I haven't talked about in a while. So I'm glad we just did.
B
So there would be a good benefit obviously then to using this before bed.
A
Yeah, absolutely. And we I created beautiful skincare lines with cbd incredibly effective that are still out there for sure. And I still do. That's what I'm saying. So there are what I kept explaining though with grace, but also wanted to be strong about it before is once again it's one of the 50 fundamental herbs. So there's so many other ingredients too which I will never stop sharing along with this beautiful ingredient of that can help us with longevity and beauty and anti aging and all the things. So we utilize them all at our labs. Yes.
B
So tell, tell me this because I know we're low on time here. What is your do you have any like new plans on any books or what is what's next for you? I'm curious there.
A
So I do one thing that I should share because I did. I launched my first Warrior Within Retreat in Costa Rica where I actually really and spoke on. Hello. Hello, Janelle. You should be sharing this. The three M's. It was beautiful and everyone had the most amazing. I mean it meant so much to me because, you know, having your first retreat is a whole thing. I have a lot of projects in my life and things that I care about and I have to tell you that one was caused a little stress deep down inside because I care so much and it went beautifully. So I'm going to do it again coming up in February. It's called the Warrior Within Retreat again where I do all three M's. So we learn about every pillar, do a lot of the movement. I have a Jen Ketting of Sound Sanctuary, which is one of the she's one of the most amazing sound healers or facilitators which also helps to improve flow and function in our body. That's again a whole other conversation. So I have that happening. And yes, I have my book Living Meditation with Penguin Randenhausen Watkins. And actually it's funny you should ask. I do have another one coming out soon. It will be actually a new edition, which is a beautiful opportunity. So I will share more at some time. But it will be Launching I believe February 2026 again with Watkins, my publisher. They're amazing. And then here in the United States, it's distributed with Penguin Random House. Thank you for asking.
B
Great. Absolutely.
A
That's in a nutshell. That's what I'm sharing. Yes.
B
Sweet. So let's tell it. And I'll link all of this in the descriptions and everything. But what are the best places to follow you? Do you do any other media? I mean, just everywhere that we can kind of listen into you?
A
Absolutely. So you can always find me on my website. Janelle kim.com. you'll have the link. But it's J E N E l l e kim.com. definitely on social media. You know, many years ago, I should probably even stop saying it. Now I have embraced it. It is a way that we can educate and share and get the word out and engage. I am the most engaged personally, probably with Instagram, because I do have limited time, but I'm on all the things. You know, I can't even.
B
Yeah.
A
Right now. So. But that's a great place to. To find me. And then I do. I have a couple of courses with a movement and the breath work aspect on my website and I do plan to have more because that's something that a lot of people ask for. And I'm. So I'm working diligently to get that out. But. And then you can also find the longevity potions on my website there for anyone here's interested. They are now available.
B
Awesome.
A
