The incomparable Charlie Chan. We proudly present the incomparable Charlie Chan in a new and exciting series Join the famous detective every week at the same time as he combines the wisdom of the east and the science of the west in a dramatic chapter from the Adventures of Charlie Chan.
D
Charlie Chan humbly bids you good evening and extend warm welcome. Honored sage Mencius wrote, man who gambles all should not complain when he loses. Same Tonight we meet criminal game in which stakes were dead. Listen, please. Thank you.
B
Tonight's adventure, the Frightened Shruff. Two weeks ago, Jimmy Dace was shot in a gunfight with the police. This afternoon, Charlie Chan and his number one son sit in the Dace home Chan fat and benevolent Gently sympathizes with the dead boy's mother.
D
Hath been written, Mrs. Dace. Sorrow, like bad weather in time, will pass and be forgotten. Do not permit grief to monopolize thoughts. This abandoned person. So sorry to be cause of son's death. It wasn't your fault, Inspector. No, you did your job. You couldn't save Jimmy. He was dead already. Dead already. The day he started running with that crowd, he was lost. It was just a question of time. Heaven only knows how. I begged him and pleaded.
B
He wouldn't listen.
D
Most unfortunate. That's good of you to come here. You're very kind. You're the only visitor I've had since it was in the papers about Jimmy. Yes, I'm the notorious Mrs. Dace. They point at me and whisper. Great philosopher once said, any event, no matter how small, always produces large talk. Maybe too much for me. The looks and the whispers. No one understands the heartbreak of a son gone wrong. This person understands and sympathizes. Mrs. Dace. You're the only one. I'm leaving San Francisco, Inspector. I've lived here all my life. But I have to get out and be a stranger somewhere else. This inept brain suspected such decision was reason for visit. Soon that ran away, Mr. Faith. There is no escape. Remain in city. Your friends will return. You will restore purity to name intent. No. No, it's impossible. Crime and dishonor exist everywhere. You cannot escape. Must remain and continue battle here. That's the door. More of porters, I suppose. No, I'm leaving. I'm settling everything and going away. I have to. Yes, what is it?
B
Message for Mr. James Dace from Gregor.
D
Message for? Don't you know it? Let me see. Come in. You are from Mr. Gregor. A reference to famous Schroff in business on Grant street.
B
That's right.
D
Mr. Schroff or what? A Schroff. Publisher. This is an IOU signed by Jimmy for $50. He couldn't even take his trouble with him. When he died, he had to leave it for me. All right. Here's your money. I've got it. What A Schroff. Pop Schroff is Oriental name for money changer, bill collector and small banker. Here's your $50. I suppose I keep the note, don't I?
B
That's right, ma'.
D
Am.
B
It's a receipt.
D
Thanks. Ah. One moment, Mrs. Dave. May this person inspect IOU in hand? Why? What's the matter? Hmm? You recall this person's words? There is no escape from crime and dishonor. Here is proof. What you have not paid son's debt, Mr. Stace. But observe IOU closely. Note Signature is composed of many short lines. As though sketched by artists. This experienced eye recognizes signature as freehand forgery. Kali. Pop, come quickly, please. Inspector Chen, your son death. But you cannot escape, Mrs. Stacey. No one can escape crime. You are involved in new trouble. Must remain and assist this person in solution. Yes, Inspector Chet. Mount devil wagon at once. Son must find messenger who collected payment. That must be his car going down the hill. Hurry up, Pop.
C
Hold on.
D
I don't know what this new business is, Pup, but I'll catch that messenger for you. And sound horn. Please. Indicate desire to overtake. I don't think he knows what we want. He's feeding. Golly. If he isn't careful, he'll pop. He'll let him make that corner. He's kidding, Josh. You want me to call an ambulance? Time for acceleration completed. Unfortunate gentleman dead. He ought to have known better than tear down Russian Hill like that. Perhaps there is dispatch case under car. Kindly bring same to father. Right. What's this all about, Pop? Explanations will follow. One moment. Ah, Golly, look at all that money. Case contains over $500. Also three IOU notes. I don't understand, Pop. All signs indicate ancient confidence trick now in operation in San Francisco. Have a hard, Pop. Educate me. Unidentified criminal watches. Obituary columns. Lists names and addresses of defunct persons. Two weeks after death presents forged IOUs for payment. As they did with Jimmy Dace? Exactly. Usually bereave family too grief stricken to observe ordinary business places. They just pay the dead man's debt, and that's easy money for someone. But how do they forge the signature? Extremely simple. To obtain sight of departed persons. Writing from from files of telephone applications, driving licenses, voting lists, etc. Probably through rules of posing as a business investigator, political organizer and so on. It's a smart idea. And most visits vicious. Victimizes persons in times of greatest tragedy must be stopped at once.
B
How?
D
What do we do? Proceed immediately to office of Shroff on Grant Street. Was wise sage who wrote. No matter how black crime may be, its source is always gold.
B
Come in, gentlemen. Come in, come in. So nice to see you. Beautiful day outside, no? Oh, you disagree? I am of likewise opinion. Is terrible day.
D
Pardon, please. Are addressing Mr. Gregor in person?
B
In the flesh. Dimitri Gregor. You wish money changed? Gregor changes rubles, francs, pounds, marks, lira, yen, pesos, crowns.
D
This visitor, Inspector Chen of police. That's side number one. Son Chan.
B
Ah, so you are perhaps visiting native home. Yes. Gregor will change dollars for you, Gregor.
D
We aren't going back to China.
B
Oh, but naturally. Foolish thought. Who would make such a suggestion? Now, Gregor.
D
Mr. Gregor, you are involved in serious crime.
B
Osimo, I am innocent. I was not there. I will bring with you.
D
Attention, please. Observe IOU notes in hand were taken from your messenger. Kindly explain source of notes, Mr. Gregor.
B
From the messenger? But how did you.
D
He's dead. He was in a car. Smash dead portion. Authorities are now in charge. Kindly explain source of notes, please. How obtained, how much paid at what date?
B
I. I do not know.
D
What do you mean, you don't know? They're your notes, aren't they? No.
B
I am collecting these debts for third party on commission, so.
D
His name, please.
B
I cannot tell you his client, you understand? Confidential. A Shiroff cannot remain in business if he tells what is confidential. Not even if he is brave. I am not brave. Inspector Gregor is frightened. Schroff, I am not a brave man.
D
You don't have to tell us. Most unfortunate, Mr. Gregor. But you will be imprisoned, Schroff, unless you give information. These notes you collect for Klein, most probably forged. Forged? One of them was. And maybe the rest.
B
All right. Very bad ethics. But I tell you. And when you see her, you tell her Gregor don't want any more business.
D
Her? Duh.
B
Duh. A blonde lady, very pretty. She has office on California Street. Ms. June Morris. I give you a dress, you tell her to come get monies Gregor collected for her and go away forever. Famous Russian philosopher named Goglitzi once said about brawny.
D
Oh, sorry. Cannot discuss philosophy of lady at present. Must navigate self to office for personal interview. Peter Bard, 1200 Van Ness. Jack Carey, 40 Sutter Place. Roy Pascal, 7820 Hynde Street. And that's all the victories for today.
B
Right, Julie? I'll start on them. Did you pick up the collection from vigor?
D
Yesterday's 900. Yes.
B
Good enough. I'll be moving along now.
D
Wait a minute then, huh? Well, what about my money? Oh, now, Junie, I'm taking the same chance as you are. I told you I want more money.
B
Junie, I'm going to give you more than you think. You'll be getting everything I make out of this.
D
What? What are you talking about?
B
Wedding bells, my sweet.
D
You're not joking, are you, Dan?
B
Try this one for size.
D
Mr. Temple. Mr. Temple, have a heart. I'm just a poor working girl.
B
All right, Julie, but how about that extra money? Now?
D
I'll take it out in orange blossom.
B
Good girl. That's what I hoped you'd say, let's make it soon, eh?
D
Fine. Good.
B
I'll go and do some arranging then. Thanks for the list. I'll give it to Inky right away. Goodbye, Junie.
D
Goodbye, dad.
B
Oh, and by the way, don't bother to pick up the money from Gregor's today. I'll save you the trip.
D
You'll call for me later?
B
Yes, Julie. I'll be calling for you.
D
This was like a puppy. June Morris, typewriting service. Shall I knock? Yes, son. Shy do. Nobody here, Pop. Office is empty. Ah, office. Exceeding tidings for busy typewriter service. Maybe she wasn't doing much work. Obvious Ms. Morris do little typewriting. Rubber roller of machine scarcely marked. And what's this? Obituary notice from daily paper, son. We'll see what's behind that door. Please. All right, Pop. Hey, Pop, look. There's someone here. I see. I see. Unfortunate girl dead. Has been shot. Is it Ms. Morris? Do you think this person. Afraid so. Blond as Gregor the Shroff said was getting paper from shelves here when shot fired. Initials on lapel brooch say JM Suggest this indeed the lady will seek. Gosh, Pop. What do we do now? Great sage say, when sudden landslide flows, main road traveler must reach destination by back lane.
B
We will return to the inimitable Charlie Chan in just a few moments. But in the meantime, you're an answer. And now back to the incomparable Charlie Chan. While Charlie Chan and his number one son are looking for other roads to lead them to the solution of the crime, Dan Temple is busy too. You find him hurrying through the streets, taking the stairs two at a time. And bursting into his fat, anxious and excited. Inky.
D
Hey, Inky. All right. Here, Dan. I just finished a very pretty bat.
B
Now, listen, Inky.
D
I ain't the kind of fella to pat myself in the back, Dan. But you certainly are the best artist in the business. You just one look at the licenses and I'm right. Now, that's art, Dan.
B
Yes, yes, I know. But we've got more important things on hand now. He we're leaving town.
D
What for?
B
We'll be in trouble with Junie if we stay.
D
What kind of trouble? Wrong trouble.
B
I'm not joking. We're leaving tonight. We start again in St. Louis. Get a new girl and make sure she's the brainless type.
D
I always like St. Louis.
B
You go down to Gregor's and pick up today's collection. Meet me here. I'll be packing.
D
Well, how about Junie?
B
June won't be picking up the collection.
D
Had a quarrel with her, eh?
B
I wouldn't exactly call it that, Inky.
D
No, no, no, no.
B
Journey's got ideas. I had to stall her off with some talk about wedding bells and orange blossoms. And she fell for it. Yeah, she fell for it. And listen, Inky.
D
Yeah?
B
Don't say anything to Gregor. Understand?
D
What did I have to say to Ink?
B
Nothing, Inky. Nothing. But even saying nothing can get you into trouble in this town.
D
Pop, I don't get it. What are we doing here in Chinatown? Patience. And patience. It's not going to do us any good hanging around outside the. The. What do you call a deck collector bloke? A shruff is Oriental word for gentlemen of this persuasion. This shru is only road left to solution of Kate. Murder of Ms. Morris left no clues. Must pick up trail here. How? Son? Has followed instructions. I'm supposed to pour water on the knob of the door handle and keep it wet all the time. Correct. It's as wet as seal rock. Very good. Father will explain plan. Criminal must come to office to pick up money collected for him by shroud. If we remain inside of it, they frighten him away without revealing identity. I see that. But how will a wet doorknob show who we're looking for? Wait, please. Person approaches shut. We've watched 10 people go in and come out already. How are we going to know the right man and will recognize suspect? By blood on hand. Blood in his hands. Precisely. How's he gonna get blood in his hands through a wet doorknob? Wait. Ah. Observe. Hands of gentlemen just leaving. Golly. The red. Pop, come quickly, please. Stop. What do you want, mister? This Inspector Chan of police. Observe credentials. You are under arrest for. For what? Participation in murder of Ms. June Morris. What? She was shot dead an hour ago. Murdered? Shot when? I don't know anything about it. I swear it. Oh, sorry. Come, please. Oh, wait a minute. Wait, Inspector. I didn't have anything to do with it. But I know who did. I know. I'll turn evidence. See, I'm too old to look. Our facts, please. Quickly. No wonder he's talking about leaving town. Having trouble with Juny. And he never told me. Get me in for a murder rap. He never told me who. Jan Timber, criminal of lowest species from success, Chicago. This is acquainted with unsavory faith. Yes, sir. Fell D temper have one telegraph for you. You can get me for forgery, Inspector, but not for killing. You want Dan Temple for that?
B
Yeah. I better pack everything.
D
I. I don't leave anything behind. Shit sucks.
B
Inky, that's you.
D
All Right. All right.
B
Just a second. Listen, Inky, I. Gregor, you've done quick. Where's Inky?
D
Very bad news, Dan.
B
What are you talking about? Your business is finished. You're telling me. What about Inky? He's finished for good. Oh, don't rush and talk with Gregor.
D
I.
B
Hey, what's the gun for you, Dan. Say, listen, I very sorry, Dan. Gregor is frightened. Sh. You know, I am frightened now. Bad that Detective Chan comes a little too close for comfort. I tried to stop him. I think maybe I take care of Ms. Morris in time. I was wrong. Now I take care of him. Gregor. I can't let anybody tell what they know about Gregor. Dan can't let you tell.
D
Chan.
B
You double cross.
D
Give me the gun.
B
You crazy man.
D
Man. Do not shoot revolver, Mr. Gregor. What private chance. Petey. Behind you is number one son. Also concealed have been threats, Mr. Gregor. With last minute assistance of Mr. Temple. Drop can, please. I've got you covered, Gregor. You better do what Pop says.
B
You were right, Inspector. I. I only half believed you when you talked me into this, Pops.
D
Almost always right.
B
You'll keep your word, Inspector.
D
Hey.
B
I will not be charged with murder.
D
This person's iron word will be kept. Mr. Temple will receive justice for participation in confidence trick. No more. Mr. Dimitri Grego will be sole beneficiary of trial for murder.
B
You that smart trick for frame.
D
You were indeed frightened. Shruff. Very shortly will be executed. Shruff. Truly it is written fear follows crime and is punishment for sin. Hmm. They got a pretty good writer of the case in the papers, Pop. Father instructed son to read papers for news, not ancient history. Gregor was in waste, Temple. Mm. So when he found out we were on the trail, he tried to cover up. Precisely. This person suspected Schroff after murder of Ms. Morris. Was only person who knew intention to question Sam. Yes. It could have been Temple. He was with her just before we came. Mr. Temple only annoyed and frightened at demand of Miss Morris for more money, put her off. And then attempted to leave town. There's two things I want to know, Pup. First, what was that? Blood on Inky's hands. Very simple. Your father secretly dusted envelopes containing collected money in Shroff's office with anthracene dye. Anthracine What? Atrocine. Invisible dust which turns blood red on contact with water. Used often in counterfeit cases. I see. And Inky got his hands wet on the doorknob. Then when he picked up the dusted envelopes, the dice found his hand red. Precisely. First question answered. Aha. But here's the second in the paper. It says that Mrs. Dace discovered the forgery and assisted you in catching the criminal. Now that stretching the truth, Pop. Why did you do it? Ah, Mrs. Dace suffered because of crime entire life smashed. Now has profited from solution of second crime. Has achieved standing in community and honor in eyes of friends. Well, she won't try to run away anymore. Precisely. And she has learned valuable lesson of Mentius who said trouble is like man's shadow. Can never run fast enough to escape either. Before this person has further words with you, here is an answer with words of wisdom. Before saying good night, Charlie Chen would like to leave you few words of ancient philosopher. Just when we are giving up seeking, it's time to find. Good night. Thank you.

What do you think makes the perfect snack? It's got to be when I'm really craving it and it's convenient. Could you be more specific? When it's cravenient? Okay, like a freshly baked cookie made with real butter, available right down the street at a.m. p. M. Or a savory breakfast sandwich I can grab in just a second at a.m. p.m. I'm seeing a pattern here. Well, yeah, we're talking about what I crave, which is anything from AM PM what more could you want? Stop by AM PM where the snacks and drinks are perfectly craveable and convenient. That's cravenience. AM PM Too much. Good stuff.
C
Welcome back. And if you're listening in the morning, you already learned your new word for the day. Schroff. Now, the meaning of schroff, which there's some indication of Chinese Indian origin, but also some Arabic connections, is a banker or money changer. Although the lending part isn't the most prominent thing that people think of, because as money changers, they needed to test the purity of coins to make sure they weren't counterfeit. And schroff is not only a noun, it is a verb. And the verb form of Schroff was the Dictionary.com Word of the Day on April 15th of this year, with the meaning to test coins to find out the purity of the metal. So if you're measuring the purpose purity of a silver coin, for example, you are said to be schroffing it. Now, the other thing I'd note is that I have to admit at first I didn't care much for Chan's attempt to get the mother to continue to stay in San Francisco. Because my thought is that sort of decision is very personal and that you can't tell people to stay. And it's not necessarily indicated. But I think you have to interpret it through the lens of his time and ours. We are much less tied to a sense of place than people were in the early parts of the 20th century. We are far more likely in the 21st century to relocate for reasons far less severe than having a son involved in a notorious crime and killed. Moving away from somewhere you'd lived all your life would be a more radical change in that era. And give the inspector credit. He went out of his way to make it easier for her to continue to stay. Alright, well, now we comment. Feedback and then I have a comment from mechanic66 regarding the episode Escape Musician. Thanks for clearing that up. About the Australian accent. I thought I was imagining it. I thought the guy at the ferry sounded British as well. Could be. There were not only Australian actors in Australian radio, there were also American expats and I think also some British expats as well. All right, well, now it's time to thank our Patreon Supporter of the Day. Well, you. Huh? Off your beaten path, aren't you? Danny. Inside. Nikki, don't. Strong arm, Danny. I was gonna invite you in anyway. Georgia Gray. Nikki. She's dead. Word came to me how you closed our eyes. I wish it had been me. Maybe you got there ahead of me, Nikki. Maybe you went dancing. Saw Georgia in a place you never thought she'd be. Killed her because she was getting away from you. Oh, you're tired, Danny. Awful tired. No one gets away from me. Not even the dead. Come on into the den. I want you to meet my mother. She'll be hurt. I don't show her my friends. All right, Nikki. I wouldn't want her to be.

Episode: Charlie Chan – The Frightened Shroff (EP4827)
Date: October 21, 2025
Host: Adam Graham
This episode features a suspenseful radio drama from the classic Charlie Chan series, titled "The Frightened Shroff." The story thrusts Charlie Chan and his Number One Son into a tale of forgery, extortion, and murder centering on the world of shroffs—traditional money changers and collectors—in San Francisco. Blending the "wisdom of the East and the science of the West," Chan seeks to uncover a criminal swindle targeting the bereaved, navigate the emotional aftermath for the victim's family, and unravel a deadly web that leads to murder.
Charlie Chan opens the episode with his trademark humility and philosophic touch:
“Man who gambles all should not complain when he loses... Tonight we meet criminal game in which stakes were dead. Listen, please. Thank you.”
(Charlie Chan, 03:35)
The backdrop is set at the home of Mrs. Dace, whose son Jimmy was killed in a police shootout after falling in with the wrong crowd.
Chan consoles Mrs. Dace as she expresses her intent to leave San Francisco due to shame.
He encourages her to stay and rebuild her reputation rather than run from misfortune.
“This abandoned person. So sorry to be cause of son's death... There is no escape. Remain in city. Your friends will return. You will restore purity to name intent.”
(Charlie Chan, 05:09)
Their conversation is interrupted by a messenger seeking repayment of an IOU supposedly signed by Jimmy for $50.
“Unidentified criminal watches obituary columns... Presents forged IOUs for payment. Usually bereaved family too grief stricken... They just pay the dead man's debt, and that's easy money for someone.”
(Charlie Chan, 10:04)
The investigation leads to Mr. Dimitri Gregor, a shroff (money changer/collector) on Grant Street, who claims innocence and proclaims himself a “frightened shroff.”
“I am not brave. Inspector Gregor is frightened. Schroff, I am not a brave man.”
(Gregor, 13:07)
Under threat of prison, Gregor reveals he’s collecting debts for a third party: a mysterious “blonde lady” named June Morris.
At June Morris's office, she’s found dead—shot while working—and the trail of deceit seems to hit a dead end.
Chan’s insight: “When sudden landslide flows, main road traveler must reach destination by back lane.”
(Charlie Chan, 17:11)
“Had to stall her off with some talk about wedding bells and orange blossoms. And she fell for it. Yeah, she fell for it.”
(Dan Temple, 19:00)
“Do not shoot revolver, Mr. Gregor... With last minute assistance of Mr. Temple. Drop gun, please.”
(Charlie Chan, 23:43)
“Crime and dishonor exist everywhere. You cannot escape. Must remain and continue battle here.”
(Charlie Chan, 05:22)
“There is no escape from crime and dishonor.”
(Charlie Chan, 07:25)
“I am not brave. Inspector Gregor is frightened. Schroff, I am not a brave man.”
(Gregor, 13:07)
“Almost always right.”
(Charlie Chan, 24:10)
“Mrs. Dace suffered because of crime entire life smashed. Now has profited from solution of second crime. Has achieved standing in community and honor in eyes of friends.”
(Charlie Chan, 27:57)
“Trouble is like man's shadow. Can never run fast enough to escape either.”
(Charlie Chan, 28:35)
Adam Graham (Host, 29:51):
Adam explains the etymology of “shroff,” offers historical and cultural context on the concept, and reflects thoughtfully on Chan’s advice to Mrs. Dace, suggesting listeners interpret the character’s actions through the lens of the era.
“Give the inspector credit. He went out of his way to make it easier for her to continue to stay.”
(Adam Graham, 31:12)
He then wraps up with listener feedback, Patreon thanks, and an invitation to next week’s detective drama.
Charlie Chan: The Frightened Shroff delivers a tightly wound plot with a creative confidence scam, emotional depth via the Dace family’s plight, and the use of classic detective ingenuity (the anthracene dye) to catch the culprit. The writing balances Golden Age radio mystery conventions with philosophical reflections and period-appropriate commentary, making for a memorable and suspenseful episode that exemplifies the series’ enduring charm.
