Welcome to the great detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Graham. In a moment, we're going to get into this Week's episode of Mr. And Mrs. North, but I do want to encourage you, if you enjoy the podcast, to follow us using your favorite podcast software. In addition, our listener support campaign continues and you can become one of our Patreon supporters for as little as $2 per month at patreon.greatdetectives.net the source I've been looking at for Mr. And Mrs. North episodes has had some confusing issues with episode duplication, and I found an episode that I'd missed we should have played three weeks ago on another site. So here from September 5, 1950, is the Million Dollar Murder, Mr. And Mrs.
Jerry North
Lord, starring Alice Frost and Joseph Curtis. Like most people who've spent the summer losing golf balls, finding a sun pan, and getting over poison ivy, Ham and Joey north are happy to. They cape their vacations and return home at last. And on this September day, as they spread their way through New York City traffic after a long drive from the country, Pamela looks forward to the humble joys of home.
Pamela North
Oh, it's going to be so good to get back to my own little bed again. And a mattress that doesn't go uphill in the middle.
Jerry North
Didn't you like the one at the hotel, dear?
Pamela North
Oh, it was all right, Jerry. But I like a mattress that just lies there and give instead of fighting you back in the wrong place.
Jerry North
Well, if I'd known that, I'd have given you mine. I had a mattress that was so limp, it sagged from the weight of the pillow.
Pamela North
Well, it doesn't really matter now, now that we're practically home. Oh, which reminds me.
Jerry North
Of what?
Pamela North
As soon as we get to the apartment, we've got to call them.
Jerry North
Who?
Pamela North
The Fergusons.
Jerry North
Who are they?
Pamela North
Don't you remember, darling? That wonderful couple with the Ptolemy poisoning? They spent two whole weeks at the hotel getting it out of their system.
Jerry North
Well, I must have gotten them out of Mine? Because I don' Anybody by the name of Ferguson.
Pamela North
Oh, you must, Jo. He's a tall, good looking man who dances so well.
Jerry North
I never had the pleasure of dancing with Amir.
Pamela North
Well, you must have danced with her. Don't you remember the fuss you made over that low cut evening dress of hers? Never seen anybody stare so.
Jerry North
Oh, Ferguson. Why, of course. Nice color.
Pamela North
Yes, wasn't she? Oh, Jerry, look after that woman.
Jerry North
What woman?
Pamela North
In the red dress. Oh my glory, you've hit her.
Jerry North
Let me go, Pam. I better see if she's heard.
Pamela North
She must be Jerry. My. Ms.
Jerry North
Quick, we've got to get up to a doctor.
Pamela North
No, no, I. I don't need a doctor. The car didn't hit me. I just fell.
Jerry North
I'm terribly sorry, miss. Let me help you out.
Pamela North
No, no, I. I don't have to be helped. I'm perfectly all right. Well, you've got to be on the safe side. We'll take you home.
Jerry North
Yes, get in the car and we'll drive you right over. Where do you live?
Pamela North
Well, I live. That's funny, I can't remember.
Jerry North
Well, don't worry about it.
Pamela North
If you just give us your name, we'll find out where you live. But I can't remember my name either. You don't remember anything? Well, just that I put on this red dress and. Wait a minute, somebody was chasing me. Somebody with a gun. Jeffrey, I can't remember.
Jerry North
Who. Seem to forget that I'm a man of considerable weight. Well, the dictionary size doesn't agree with me. Well, it don't agree with me neither, boys. But if you want to keep track of that dame in the red dress, we'd better get a move. I'm moving. Yeah, but you locked me up with that slow walk of yours. Now I lost the day. Well, find it again. Be quick about it. Yeah, that's funny. I could have sworn to come around this corner. Hey, wait a minute. Get back over there in front of that car talking to that blonde Damon of guy. Are you sure that's the girl? Well, that's the one we've been following from the hotel. And keep your eyes on her. Is getting into their car. That young lady is worth a million dollars to me. Literally a million dollars. She waited terrible life. That all depends on what she does that quick. Get a cab. The car she's in is starting up. Yeah, don't worry. Don't tell me not to worry. Follow that car. Make sure that girl doesn't get to bottom of his office. You just leave it to me, boys. Boy that girl won't get.
Pamela North
You. Still can't remember what your name is or. Or where you live? Nothing, Mrs. Lor. My mind is just a blank. Can't remember anything before the accident.
Jerry North
What you find in her bag, Pam?
Pamela North
Nothing. That. Nothing.
Jerry North
There must be something in there. They'll tell us who. If somebody with a gun is after her, we better find out in a hurry.
Pamela North
Nothing in here but odds, man.
Jerry North
Look.
Pamela North
Dead. Correct. Wait a minute. Here's something. What is this? A hotel key. Room is 203. Jason Park Hotel. Does it mean anything to you? No, no, I don't think so.
Jerry North
Well, we're not going to take any more chances in your life, young lady. As soon as this light changes, we're taking you straight to police headquarters for your own protection.
Pamela North
If I can do better, Jerry, I've got a feel. Golly. Where did those shots come from?
Jerry North
I don't know, but I'm getting out of here fast.
Pamela North
Jerry, what's the matter? The shot. They came through the winner of the car and they hit her.
Jerry North
What?
Pamela North
Dead, Jerry. She's dead. Those shots we heard are the ones that killed her.
Jerry North
All right, Terry. Now the body's been taken away, you can show me exactly where she was sitting. Well, we told you, Bill. We were right here in the car waiting for the red light to change. And the woman was nearest to this window.
Pamela North
Then we heard the shot.
Jerry North
And if Pam hadn't told me she'd been hit, I wouldn't have known anything had happened. Didn't see who fired the shots, of course. No. You don't know the woman's name or who was after her?
Pamela North
No. The only clue we've got is this hotel key.
Jerry North
Well, hang on to it for a minute until I figure something out.
Pamela North
Let's get over to the Jason Park Hotel and find out what this key means.
Jerry North
Pam, will you let me play detective for a minute?
Pamela North
The key won't run away, but the man who committed the murder will. Why do we have to stay here?
Jerry North
Because I've got some witnesses to question. Now, there are six people over there who were on the sidewalk when the shots were fired, and I've got to talk to every one of them. Well, you talk to the witnesses and we'll go to the Jason Park Hotel.
Pamela North
That's right.
Jerry North
No, no, no, no. Wait a minute. I can't have you running off and getting into trouble. What's the matter, Bill? Are you afraid we'll find the murderer? No, I'm afraid he'll find you.
Pamela North
Well, if he does, we'll call the police.
Jerry North
No. No. Pam, come back.
Pamela North
There, you with the Hotel bill. Room 23.
Jerry North
Oh, all right. All right. Go ahead and get a kill. See if I care. But for Pete's sake, be careful. Here it is, Pam. Room 203.
Pamela North
Well, what should we do? Knock or just use the key?
Jerry North
Well, I'd say knock, but from that look in your eyes, I can tell we're going to use the keys.
Pamela North
Wow, Jerry. Trying to sneak in? We better keep it a secret. Well, that's not much of a secret, Jerry.
Jerry North
Darling, I'm not a second story man. And this door is no help either.
Pamela North
Anybody in there?
Jerry North
Not as far as I can see. The room's in perfect order.
Pamela North
Well, let's go in and disorder it.
Jerry North
See anything?
Pamela North
Bed, dresser and a phone tape. My goodness. I just remembered. I was supposed to call the Fergusons as soon as we got to New York. The Fergusons? Jerry, don't you remember those people with a low cut evening drink?
Jerry North
Pam, will you stop thinking about evening dresses at a time like this?
Pamela North
I promised we'd call them and make a day.
Jerry North
Well, you can do that later. Now, see if you can find anything that, uh. Oh, here's something on the dresser. Why, a picture, Jerry.
Pamela North
It's a picture of the woman who was murdered.
Jerry North
Oh, it is? Yes.
Pamela North
In the drawer of a package of letters. And a photostatic copy of the Dark.
Jerry North
What's the name on it?
Pamela North
Olivia Ward. The letters are addressed to her too.
Jerry North
Then that's who the dead woman is. Olivia Ward. You better get hold of Wigand and tell them her name before we open these letters. Now, Pan, you leave those letters alone.
Pamela North
Yes, I think you'd better. Huh? Get your hands up, both of you. I want those letters. And I want that birth certificate too. Well, you can't have it. Can't I? You don't seem to realize that I have a loaded gun in my hand. And I'm not afraid to use it.
Jerry North
To get hold of these letters. Are they that important to you?
Pamela North
That's my business, and I don't like people interfering in it. Now give me those letters and be quick about it.
Jerry North
Oh, no. We're turning these over to the police. They'll be here any minute.
Pamela North
Who are you kidding? What do the police know about this?
Jerry North
More than you think, young lady. And if you don't believe me, just have a look out this window.
Pamela North
What for?
Jerry North
For this.
Pamela North
Let's go. All right, Jerry, I got it.
Jerry North
Point to the media. Go with me.
Pamela North
You crazy fool. What do you think you're trying to do?
Jerry North
I'm trying to find a murderer. And the way it stands right now, you're a very likely suspect.
Pamela North
You out of your mind? I don't even know who's been killed. Why do you want these letters? What do you know about. About Olivia Ward. Olivia Ward?
Jerry North
Yes. She was murdered about an hour ago. And you killed her, didn't you?
Pamela North
Don't be insane. How could I have killed her? I'm Olivia Ward.
Jerry North
Hello. Boy in the world have you come to my apartment? I tell you not to let that girl out of your sight. All right, stop blowing your top, boys. There's no harm done. No harm done. Suppose that girl goes to Bottomley's office. Suppose she shows him a birth certificate and those letters from her aunt? Well, if she does, it'll be the trick of the century, boy. She's dead. Deceased, Deceased. Dead and laying in the morgue. Then the police are out looking for the murderers. Then you killed her? Why, yes. There's no questions, Mr. Skinnis. I was hired to keep that girl away from Bottomley's office. And now that she ain't ever gonna get there, my job is done. Fuck. Murder. Cold blooded murder.
Pamela North
What?
Jerry North
That was gonna make what the temperature is. I want my doughboy. I want it right now. Well, before I pay off, I want to make sure you're telling me the truth. What's the matter? Don't you believe me? My dear boy, in matters of money, I make it a habit not to believe anybody. What are you gonna do? At the hotel? Of course, and check on your story.
Pamela North
Park Station Hotel.
Jerry North
Room 203, please.
Pamela North
Yes, sir. Room 203. Hello?
Jerry North
Who's this?
Pamela North
But it's me. Who's that?
Jerry North
Why, York. I'm Ms. Olivia Ward, attorney. Mr. Bartol. And it's of the utmost importance that I see right away. Do you know where I can find her?
Pamela North
Olivia Ward?
Jerry North
Yes, definitely. You see, I told you she was dead. Quiet, will you?
Pamela North
Hello?
Jerry North
I wish to speak to Mrs. Ward, please.
Pamela North
Well, this is Ms. Ward.
Jerry North
What?
Pamela North
Is Mr. Bottomley?
Jerry North
Yes, but. Excuse me, I can't talk just now. I'll call you back. Confounded, Redmond. You did lie to me. Don't be crazy. She's dead. I tell you. I saw her. You didn't see Olivia Ward dead. She was just on the phone. You killed the wrong girl. What? Come with me. I hate to trust you with a plan that requires intelligence, but I haven't any choice. Oh, what's the plan? You're going up to Ms. Ward's hotel room and tell her you're Mr. Bottomley's chauffeur. I'll be waiting downstairs in the car. And if you can get her to come down there, the rest will be easy. Once I get my hands on Olivia Ward, I'll never let go.
Pamela North
I can't understand it, Mr. North, but that was Mr. Bottomley on the phone. Are the actual strange. Maybe he's a strange man. Well, I've never met him, but he's a well known lawyer. And if there's something wrong, I want to know what it is.
Jerry North
Easy now, Ms. Ward. As soon as Lt. Wigan arrives, we'll get to the bottom of this whole thing.
Pamela North
But you don't understand. My life has been threatened. That's why I came in here with a gun. I was afraid I might be killed. You meaning why? Because I have a chance of inheriting an unheal misfortune unless I'm killed before I can prove my identity.
Jerry North
What do you mean?
Pamela North
Well, my aunt was a very rich woman, Mr. North. Her name was Agatha Pierce. And when she died, she didn't leave a will. So her entire estate goes to her nearest of kin.
Jerry North
And that's you.
Pamela North
Well, that's what Mr. Bottomer thinks. That's why he wrote to me out in Seattle and sent me the money to come east. But even out there I. I received threatening phone calls. From whom? I don't know. But I was afraid to make that long trip alone, so I brought a friend along.
Jerry North
The woman whose picture you have on your dresser.
Pamela North
Yes.
Jerry North
Ms. Ward, I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Your friend is dead.
Pamela North
Dead? Yes, she was murdered in our car this afternoon. Oh, no. I just left to here about an hour ago. Well, she must have gone out after you left. We saw in the street.
Jerry North
Yes. Is that your bill? No, sir.
Pamela North
This is Mr. Bottomless Joke.
Jerry North
Who? Mr. Bottomless Joke. Well, open the door.
Pamela North
Jeff.
Jerry North
Snitz Ward into Mr. Bottom. I want to see you right away. About what? Well, he says it's dangerous for her to stay here any longer. She might be killed. My scene by the man, looks like. Kill him. That's why he had to ring off on the phone to save his own life.
Pamela North
Well, we got to be.
Jerry North
Now there's in the car and he's waiting, see. And he wants Ms. Woods to come down right away and. And bring all her identification.
Pamela North
All right, all right, I'll go.
Jerry North
Now wait a minute. If there ain't time, sir, the killer might be on his way up here right now.
Pamela North
He's right, Mr. Moore. I can't afford to Stay here any longer.
Jerry North
Okay, we'll take you down to the car. Come on, Pam. We gotta hurry. Have you got your papers, Ms. Ward? Yes, I've got some, and let's go as soon as we get out of here. Wait a second.
Pamela North
The matter?
Jerry North
Somebody's coming down the hall. Quick. Open the door and get back in the room. What's oil? That guy in the wharf. Quick, get back. What? Why, that's Bill Wigan. The man you're with is Tully Redmond. Grab him, Jerry. He's an escaped cop.
Pamela North
That's Billy trying to get away.
Jerry North
Oh, no, you don't. Oh, what's the idea of ideas? To keep you quiet for a while until I find out what you're up to.
Pamela North
I'll tell you what he's up to. Kidnapping Ms. Ward. He made believe that he was trying to help her. Shelly.
Jerry North
What?
Pamela North
Ms. Ward? She's gone.
Jerry North
Holy Mackenzie. We've got to find her, Bill, before she gets killed. Who?
Pamela North
The woman who was just here. They tried to kill her this afternoon, only they made a mistake and shot the wrong girl.
Jerry North
She couldn't have disappeared, Pam. She must have taken the elevator at the end of the hall.
Pamela North
No, the back stairs. Jerry, over there.
Jerry North
Oh. Oh, I beg your pardon. Who are you? I'm the manager of this hotel. I just come up the stairway to investigate the disturbance up here. Well, I'm Lieutenant Wigan, Homicide. Anybody pass you on those stairs? Why, yes. Ms. Olivia Ward, who was going down while I was coming up.
Pamela North
Oh, for goodness sake. Why didn't you stop her?
Jerry North
Well, I tried to, madam, but a great big fat man puts me out of the way. A fat man? Come on, Bill, we gotta find him. Oh, it's no use, sir. They ran up through the lobby and drove off in his car.
Pamela North
Where are you taking me? Why are you driving so fast?
Jerry North
Patience, my dear. We'll be there in a moment. Now, my summer cabin is just off the main road here. You see, it's back there amongst the trees. Open.
Pamela North
Why are you taking me to your summer cabin? And why'd you rush me out of the hotel?
Jerry North
My dear child, I was protecting you from those ruffians in the hallway. They might have harmed you.
Pamela North
What if.
Jerry North
Olivia, please, we're here now, and some of your questions are so fatiguing. I'll answer them when we get inside. Yes.
Pamela North
First, please. No, I'm not going in.
Jerry North
You're not what? Come along, young lady. No time for femininity.
Pamela North
I'm not going in, I tell you.
Jerry North
No, I should have to offer you a little inducement make this done.
Pamela North
Put that down.
Jerry North
I will. When you do precisely what I tell you to do, be quick about it.
Pamela North
Very well. You'll have a lot of explaining to do when we get back to New York, Mr. Bottomley.
Jerry North
We're not getting back to New York, my dear. And I hate to disillusion you at this late date, but I am not Mr. Button. I just told you that too. It is quiet on the way.
Pamela North
You didn't.
Jerry North
I'm afraid I did, Miss Ward. You see, I'm rather an evil man. My name is Skinner. And your dear departed antagonist Pierce was a first cousin of mine. But if not for you, I would be the uncontested next of kin and the heir to a considerable fortune.
Pamela North
This way it stands.
Jerry North
In a word, yes. Now get inside. I have a great deal to talk to you about.
Pamela North
Haven't you sat enough?
Jerry North
Not quite. I brought you here because deep down in the fatty folds of my heart, I have a spark of generosity. I'm willing to let you live.
Pamela North
Live?
Jerry North
On one condition. To furnish me with the proof of your identity, accept $20,000 in cash and vanish from the face of this earth forever.
Pamela North
You gave up the million that belongs to me.
Jerry North
Don't be greedy, Miss Lord. Look what greed has done to me. A very good creature like yourself would be. Unpalatable.
Pamela North
I won't do it.
Jerry North
You won't give up a million dollars for your own life?
Pamela North
No. You wouldn't kill me anyway.
Jerry North
Wouldn't I? One girl has died already for that million. Your death can be taken in stripes.
Pamela North
Let me go.
Jerry North
What's your answer, Miss Ward? You do as I tell you.
Pamela North
No, I won't.
Jerry North
You shall have to suffer the consequences.
Pamela North
Let me go. Let me go.
Jerry North
Well, you miserable little wretch. By instinct, I'm not a violent man.
Pamela North
No.
Jerry North
But through the years, I've learned to overcome my gentle nature. No. No. Step on it, Bill. If Skinner's got that girl up here in his cabin, he'll kill her for sure. I'm going as fast as I can, Jerry. Hey, hey, hey. Take it easy. There's the turnoff right there.
Pamela North
Oh, gosh. Made that on two wheels.
Jerry North
Well, two's better than none. Where's the cabin, Redmond? Yeah, right up ahead in the woods. You're not kidding us, are you? But if you're leading us on a wild goose chase, you'll do 10 more years. For what? For what? This is his cabin, I tell you. There's his car, all right. And you stay with us. Don't try any tricks we're all going in here together.
Pamela North
Hurry, Bell. We'll be too late if you don't hurry.
Jerry North
Okay, let's go. Remember what I told you, Redmond. You try to get away, I'll nail you. All right, Jerry, open the door. I'm bringing him first. Take your hands off that barrel, Skinner, and get him up in the air.
Pamela North
Oh, my go. He tried to kill me. Well, I'm glad we got here in time to prevent him.
Jerry North
You, Redmond. You told them where to find me. Well, I couldn't help but chum there was committed sight to great. Well, I gave you the four.
Pamela North
Hey, hey, cut that out.
Jerry North
Are you all right, Ms. Ward?
Pamela North
Yes, I think so.
Jerry North
Well, I. I'm sorry you had to go through all this trouble, but you made it easy for us to find out who murdered your friend Sally Fuller. Mr. Skinner, you're under arrest. Oh, don't be absurd. You haven't any case against me. We'll see about that when we get to court. Now, just a minute. You can't railroad me into a crime I didn't commit. The man of kill Sally Full is standing right over there. Who, me? Yes, you, Redmond. You practically admitted it in my apartment this afternoon. Why, you're full of baloney. I didn't admit nothing. But you were at the scene of the crime when the murder was committed. Yeah, who knows where you was when the murder was committed.
Pamela North
Just a minute, just a minute. I think we can settle this thing once and for all.
Jerry North
How, Pam?
Pamela North
Through the Fergusons.
Jerry North
Oh, not them again.
Pamela North
Well, I just remember, Jerry, the Fergusons are related to Ms. Ward's aunt. Yes, and when Mrs. Ferguson was out in Seattle this summer, she paid a visit to. Well, come to think of it, she paid a Visit to you, Ms. Ford. Me? Yes, I. I think she said you went to a concert together. And you remember Mrs. Cranston, don't you? Oh, yes, of course. We did go to a concert.
Jerry North
Oh, for crying out loud, Pam. What in the world has this got to do with the murder of Sally Fuller?
Pamela North
Everything, Bill, everything. Because Sally Fuller wasn't murdered. This young lady is Sally Fuller, and the dead woman is Olivia Ward. What are you talking about? I'm talking about you, mister. You were so anxious to prove your phony identity, you walked right into the trap I set for you.
Jerry North
What trap?
Pamela North
About Mrs. Ferguson. Mrs. Ferguson never went to Seattle, and she isn't related to Agatha Pierce, are you? Dirty little skunk. I'm so sorry, Ms. Puller, but I had to find out what your game was and Now, I know you killed Olivia Ward so you could take her identification papers and impersonate us for a million dollar inheritance. That's a lie. Is it? The real Olivia Ward would have known that Mrs. Ferguson never took her to a concert this summer. And the real Olivia Ward would have denied it. But you couldn't afford to because you were afraid it might reveal you as a faker.
Jerry North
Bill grabbing Let go.
Pamela North
Let go.
Jerry North
I'll let you go, all right. But where you're going, you'll never inherit a million dollars.
Pamela North
Oh, home. Home at last.
Jerry North
And a pretty grisly looking sight it is, too. Pamela, dear, did you forget to have the cleaning woman come here during our vacation? Yes. And did you forget to cut off the newspapers and the milk and the electricity?
Pamela North
Yes.
Jerry North
You forgot to defrost the refrigerator, too, dear. Looks like the Arctic Ocean in here.
Pamela North
Oh, but it's home, Jerry. And now that we're here, I'm going to call up the Fergusons.
Jerry North
The Fergusons?
Pamela North
Well, I promised to call them as soon as we got in, Jerry.
Jerry North
Okay, okay. Go ahead and call them.
Pamela North
Hello? Hello? Operator? Operator. What's up? Getting to that.
Jerry North
What's the matter now?
Pamela North
The phone, Jerry. The only thing I remembered, I had it disconnected when we went away. SA.

Welcome back. A typical Mr. And Mrs. North mystery where there's a lot of misdirection at work with a whole nother crime going on to distract from the main murder. But Pam cuts through it all to solve the case. You do have to appreciate a villain saying, I'm a very evil man. It lets you know exactly where you stand with him. Of course, he was threatening a very evil woman, and you can understand her refusal to take a settlement after having committed murder to get the million dollars. Poor Pam. At the end, she came up with the exact wrong pattern of remembering and forgetting things with the decision to disconnect the phone. I don't get the whole philosophy of disconnecting your phone while on vacation. We encountered that on Johnny Dollar a few weeks back. Was that actually a common practice that people did? It seems like the maintenance of a phone line wouldn't be that big of an expense to make it worthwhile. Plus, getting phones reconnected tends to be a bit of a hassle though I suppose if you were going to be spending the whole summer at another location, it might make sense to turn the phones off, but I just don't see it for your typical few weeks vacation. Alright, well, listener comments and feedback. Now we've got a couple nice ones from YouTube and we start with KT who writes Adam, I live in Virginia but have family in eastern Oregon and west of Boise, so I'm always so happy to hear your voice. It heartens me and closes the distance. I feel. I love your analysis. It's great to hear the stories plus their background and the story of Old Time Radio as well. Thanks again. Well, thanks so much. I know that Boise is far away. Even if you're going by plane, it tends to be a bit of a hassle and an expense to get there. So I'm so glad to be able to bridge the gap via the Internet at least. And then we have a comment from Mildred who writes, I got hooked on Old Time Radio back in the 80s when I had my first apartment and didn't have a television yet. A couple of local stations played old radio shows and that was my entertainment every night from 9 to 10. It was called the Drama Hour, even though on Saturdays and Sundays they played comedy. After I got a television I would turn it off every night at 9:00 to listen to the Drama Hour. Thanks so much. Great story Mildred. And now it is time to thank our Patreon Supporter of the day and I want to thank Rachel. Rachel's been one of our patreon supporters since June 2022, currently supporting the podcast at the Psalmist level of $4 or more per month. Thanks so much for the support Rachel, and that will do it for today. If you're enjoying the podcast, please follow us using your favorite podcast software and be sure to write and review the podcast wherever you download it from. We will be back next Thursday with another episode of Mr. And Mrs. North, but join us back here tomorrow for yours truly, Johnny Dollar Wear.

How under the sun can a man be crazy enough to issue a policy like that? John, you know how it is. The company prides itself on the fact we'll insure anything, not only life and property and health and so on. But the voice of a singer, the feet of a dancer, hands of a pianist. Even the dimples on the knees of a chorus girl. Yeah. Singing mice, an old alley cat, a sick whale. Of course, I can't say that Harry wasn't in position to do it. But, Johnny, you've got to help me. First you better tell me who and why and what it's all about. Just the trouble. I don't know. You don't know? I only got back here to the office this morning. I found our copy of the policy lying here on my desk. But if you don't even. Oh, look, I've handled some pretty screwy cases for you, George. Yes, but they've all finally made sense one way or the other. Johnny, we have paid you some very nice fees. You can't deny that. George, tell me, have I ever questioned your expense account? But death insurance? It doesn't make sense. Have I insurance somebody against living? Have I. I'm sorry, but this time the answer is no. Listen, if you take this on, I'll okay your expense account without even reading it. Yes, insurance expense account Unlimited. Johnny. George, there are some things even a conniving, chiseling, unprincipled rascal like myself won't even. Unlimited.

In this episode of The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio, hosted by Adam Graham, listeners are transported back to September 5, 1950, with the thrilling audio drama titled Million Dollar Murder. Starring Alice Frost as Pamela North and Joseph Curtin as Jerry North, this installment delves into a complex mystery involving mistaken identities, deceit, and a hefty inheritance.
Setting the Scene (00:00 - 01:58)
The episode opens with Pamela and Jerry North returning from their summer vacation in New York City. Pamela is eager to settle back into their comfortable home after dealing with minor inconveniences during their trip. Their peaceful return, however, is quickly interrupted as they navigate through the bustling city traffic.
The Accident and the Mysterious Stranger (02:37 - 08:05)
As the Nords drive home, they inadvertently collide with a woman in a striking red dress, who appears disoriented and amnesic. Pamela discovers a hotel key in the woman's possession, leading them to Room 203 at the Jason Park Hotel. Their concerned investigation reveals that the woman, later identified as Olivia Ward, has been tragically murdered.
Unraveling the Mystery (08:09 - 20:40)
Determined to protect Pamela and uncover the truth, Jerry takes charge, questioning witnesses and piecing together clues. The discovery of letters addressed to Olivia Ward and a birth certificate deepens the intrigue. Tensions mount as suspicions arise about the true identity of the woman and the motives behind the murder. The arrival of Lieutenant Wigan and the confrontation with the antagonist, Mr. Skinner, escalate the stakes, leading to a dramatic showdown at Skinner's summer cabin.
The Revelation and Resolution (20:52 - 26:20)
In a cunning twist, Pamela exposes Skinner's deceit, revealing his plan to impersonate Olivia Ward to claim a million-dollar inheritance. The Nords apprehend Skinner, ensuring justice is served. The episode concludes with the Nords returning home, only to face minor domestic challenges, hinting at their resilient partnership in solving mysteries.
Pamela North (Alice Frost): The sharp-witted and resourceful wife who plays a pivotal role in unraveling the mystery.
Jerry North (Joseph Curtin): Pamela's equally determined husband, whose investigative skills are crucial in solving the case.
Mr. Skinner (Jack Webb): The primary antagonist, whose sinister plans drive the conflict of the episode.

Pamela North on Returning Home:
"Oh, it's going to be so good to get back to my own little bed again." [02:37]
Mr. Skinner's Admission:
"I'm rather an evil man. My name is Skinner. And your dear departed antagonist Pierce was a first cousin of mine." [19:51]
Jerry North Confronting the Villain:
"You, Redmond. You told them where to find me. Well, I couldn't help but chum there was committed sight to great. Well, I gave you the four." [23:11]
Pamela's Clever Trap:
"Everything, Bill, everything. Because Sally Fuller wasn't murdered. This young lady is Sally Fuller, and the dead woman is Olivia Ward." [24:50]
After the drama concludes, Adam Graham provides insightful reflections on the episode:
Misdirection and Character Dynamics:
"A typical Mr. And Mrs. North mystery where there's a lot of misdirection at work with a whole nother crime going on to distract from the main murder. But Pam cuts through it all to solve the case." [29:23]
Villain Characterization:
"You do have to appreciate a villain saying, I'm a very evil man. It lets you know exactly where you stand with him." [29:23]
Real-World Practices: Graham muses on Pamela's decision to disconnect the phone during vacation, questioning its practicality and drawing parallels with another series:
"I don't get the whole philosophy of disconnecting your phone while on vacation. We encountered that on Johnny Dollar a few weeks back." [29:23]
Adam shares heartfelt listener comments:
KT from Virginia:
"I live in Virginia but have family in eastern Oregon and west of Boise, so I'm always so happy to hear your voice. It heartens me and closes the distance. I feel. I love your analysis."
Mildred's Nostalgia:
"I got hooked on Old Time Radio back in the 80s when I had my first apartment and didn't have a television yet. A couple of local stations played old radio shows and that was my entertainment every night from 9 to 10."
