Shirley Hathaway
Thank heaven someone's come help me.
Jerry North
What's the matter? What's happening?
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, it's awful.
Ferdy Hathaway
Oh, that's right, Mr. North. She's just fine.
Pam North
Yeah, her dress is all torn.
Jerry North
Yeah, I see.
Ferdy Hathaway
If we all cut that out.
Shirley Hathaway
Mr. Dog is crazy. Don't. Don't let him hit me again.
Narrator
Mr. And Mrs. North. Starring Joseph Curtin and Alice Frost. Listen as Pam and Jerry solve the mystery. The Premature Corpse. It's a beautiful night in New York. Clear, fresh, and in the snug apartment of Ferdy Hathaway.
Doug Hathaway
Warm.
Narrator
A night for music, for friendship, for love. And Shirley Hollis seems to have this last on her mind as she snuggles up to Ferdie on the sofa.
Shirley Hathaway
Aw, Ferdy, I was just getting comfortable.
Ferdy Hathaway
I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to run along, Shirley. Some people are coming over in a little while.
Shirley Hathaway
Will they be here long?
Ferdy Hathaway
I don't know. It's business. He's Jerry north, the publisher. They're going to discuss a book I've written.
Shirley Hathaway
Well, I'll wait till they leave. I want to talk to you, too.
Ferdy Hathaway
I.
Shirley Hathaway
Come here.
Ferdy Hathaway
What do you want?
Shirley Hathaway
Put your arms around.
Ferdy Hathaway
Now look, Shirley.
Shirley Hathaway
Then I will. There. Hello, Ferdy.
Ferdy Hathaway
It's. It's getting awfully warm in here.
Shirley Hathaway
Yes, isn't it?
Ferdy Hathaway
I.
Shirley Hathaway
Yes, Birdie.
Ferdy Hathaway
Is this what you want?
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, yes, darling. That's just what I want. Now, that didn't hurt, did it?
Ferdy Hathaway
You little cheat.
Shirley Hathaway
Ferdy.
Ferdy Hathaway
My brother's wife. What do you want with me?
Shirley Hathaway
You know I don't love Doug.
Ferdy Hathaway
I knew it when you married him. But you loved his money. I tried to tell him, but he wouldn't listen.
Shirley Hathaway
I don't know why. You've always hated me.
Ferdy Hathaway
Because you're a little Cheat. You married Doug for his money. And now.
Shirley Hathaway
Yes, now what? What do I want with you? You don't have money.
Ferdy Hathaway
You want something.
Shirley Hathaway
I want you, that's all. Can't you see that, Ferdy? It's always been.
Ferdy Hathaway
That's what you want me to think. But I know you. It's just another one of your schemes. I wouldn't put it past you even to try to get me to. To get rid of Doug for you. Now that you have his money. Is that what you want?
Jerry North
Is it?
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, poor, suspicious Ferdy.
Ferdy Hathaway
You didn't answer my question.
Shirley Hathaway
I know why you don't like me, Ferdy. It's not. Doug has nothing to do with Doug.
Ferdy Hathaway
You still didn't.
Shirley Hathaway
That stuffy superiority of yours, that stuffy righteousness. You're a Hathaway, and I was just a chorus girl. That's why you didn't want Doug to marry me. That's why you think you're too good for me.
Ferdy Hathaway
You're a cheat.
Shirley Hathaway
That's why I'm that Hathaway superiority. Well, how about Doug? I suppose he's not a cheat.
Ferdy Hathaway
What are you talking about?
Shirley Hathaway
I'm talking about your brother, a Hathaway, A crook.
Ferdy Hathaway
That's a lie.
Shirley Hathaway
You know it isn't. Well, maybe you don't. Maybe you've blinded yourself with that phony righteousness of yours until you can't see what's going on right in front of you.
Ferdy Hathaway
What do you mean, what's going on?
Shirley Hathaway
You say I married Doug for his money. Well, how did he make that money, huh? The Hathaway fortune.
Ferdy Hathaway
Business.
Shirley Hathaway
Sure. Business. Some business. Black market. In the wartime.
Ferdy Hathaway
You're crazy.
Shirley Hathaway
It so happens I can prove it. And that's not all I can prove. If I have to. I know enough about Doug to send him to jail. How would you like that? A Hathaway in jail.
Ferdy Hathaway
Get out of here.
Shirley Hathaway
Why don't you stop kidding yourself, Birdie? So your grandfather was Colonel Hathaway. You're just a hack writer. Your brother's a crook. Come on, off that high horse. You're no better than I am and no worse. We could be friends. Good friends.
Ferdy Hathaway
Never.
Shirley Hathaway
Ferdy, look at me.
Ferdy Hathaway
You cheap, lying, dirty little.
Shirley Hathaway
I'm not taking any more of that. My God, I tried to be nice, but you don't want it that way. All right.
Ferdy Hathaway
Hey, those nails are sharp.
Shirley Hathaway
And so are my teeth.
Ferdy Hathaway
You're asking for this. Put down that poker.
Shirley Hathaway
I will. On your head.
Narrator
No.
Ferdy Hathaway
No, you don't. Let me have it.
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, you're hurting me.
Ferdy Hathaway
I haven't stopped. Don't try biting again, or I'll make sure you don't have any teeth left to bite with. Now, come on. Drop that poker.
Shirley Hathaway
All right.
Ferdy Hathaway
That's better. And now get out of here. I've got to get cleaned up before the Norths get here. What's so funny?
Shirley Hathaway
You're always concerned about impressions, aren't you, Ferdy? Well, brother, I promise you, you're gonna make a beautiful.
Pam North
The more I think about it, Jerry, the more I think his sister will have to be killed too.
Jerry North
What?
Pam North
But not shot. I think strangling would be better.
Jerry North
What on earth are you talking about, Ben?
Pam North
About Mr. Hathaway's book, of course. Well, what did you think?
Jerry North
I didn't know. The way you start a subject out of a clear blue sky.
Pam North
It wasn't a clear blue sky. It was a murky green elevator. And it's in Mr. Hathaway's building. So I. I should think you'd know what I meant.
Jerry North
I see. Well, let's go tell Mr. Hathaway the sister ought to be strangled. I'm sure he'll love the suggestion. It'll mean rewriting three chapters, but it'll make a story much stronger in one woman's opinion.
Pam North
Well, did Dr. Wallace.
Shirley Hathaway
Golly.
Pam North
So was that.
Jerry North
Sounded like it came from the apartment at the end of the hall.
Pam North
Jerry, it's Ms. Hathaway's apartment.
Jerry North
I wonder what.
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, thank heaven. Someone's come help me.
Jerry North
What's the matter?
Doug Hathaway
What's happening?
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, it's all.
Ferdy Hathaway
Don't Listen to her, Mr. North.
Shirley Hathaway
He tried to kiss me. When I wouldn't let him, he hit me.
Pam North
Sherry address is all torn.
Jerry North
It.
Ferdy Hathaway
She's just trying to embarrass me, Mr. North.
Jerry North
Why would she try to do that?
Ferdy Hathaway
It's kind of hard to explain.
Shirley Hathaway
I hope that it is. You maniac.
Ferdy Hathaway
Now, stop it, Charlie.
Pam North
Did you hit her, Mr. Hathaway? Her face looks bruised.
Ferdy Hathaway
Well, yes, I guess I did.
Shirley Hathaway
But why?
Laura Arnold
Well, because she bit me.
Ferdy Hathaway
Stop it, Shirley.
Shirley Hathaway
It's just an act.
Ferdy Hathaway
If you don't cut that out, Shirley, I'm gonna have to hit you again.
Shirley Hathaway
Mister, no, don't let him hit me.
Doug Hathaway
He won't.
Jerry North
Now, come on. Let's go in and see what this is all about.
Shirley Hathaway
No, no. I want to go home. I want to see Doug. I want my dog. Doug. Doug. It was awful. When I wouldn't let him make love to me, he. Well, he got like crazy. He said all kinds of awful things about you and me.
Doug Hathaway
All right, Shirley, forget it. It's over.
Shirley Hathaway
I can't, Doug. I. I'm afraid. He said he'd see you in jail.
Ferdy Hathaway
What?
Shirley Hathaway
That's right. He said you're a crook and he can prove it.
Doug Hathaway
Bertie said that?
Shirley Hathaway
Yes. He started talking about your tie up with gambling.
Doug Hathaway
What does he know about that?
Shirley Hathaway
I don't know. But he said he's going to make sure you get what's coming to you. Unless. Unless I. Oh, Doug, I can. Not even to save you. I can.
Doug Hathaway
All right, sweetheart, you won't have to. I can handle Ferdie.
Shirley Hathaway
Oh, he'll deny it. He'll make up some story.
Doug Hathaway
Don't worry.
Shirley Hathaway
If you don't believe me, you can ask the nods. They say.
Doug Hathaway
I believe you.
Shirley Hathaway
Shirley, I. I hate. Hate to have to tell you this about your own brother.
Doug Hathaway
Yeah, my brother. My dear, sanctimonious brother. We're just like him to keep his threat and run to the police. Now that he knows about me, I've got to figure some way to shut him up.
Shirley Hathaway
But how?
Doug Hathaway
I'll think of something. One thing's for sure. He's going to keep away from you. Or I promise you, surely I'll kill him.
Bill Wagon
What's the matter, Ferdy? Don't you like this restaurant?
Ferdy Hathaway
Sure.
Bill Wagon
Laura, you're not eating?
Ferdy Hathaway
I'm not hungry. Laura, I've got to tell you something. I don't know how to begin. Laura.
Bill Wagon
Yes, Ferdy?
Ferdy Hathaway
I love you, Laura. You know that.
Bill Wagon
For someone who says he doesn't know how to begin, I'd say you're doing fine.
Ferdy Hathaway
I only hope you believe what I'm going to tell you. My sister in law, Doug's wife Shirley, came over to my place last night.
Bill Wagon
Yes?
Ferdy Hathaway
She made a play for me.
Bill Wagon
What?
Ferdy Hathaway
She tried to get me to make love to her when I wasn't interested. She blew her top.
Bill Wagon
The woman's scorned.
Ferdy Hathaway
It's more than that. She doesn't want me. She wants to use me.
Shirley Hathaway
Use you?
Bill Wagon
What for?
Ferdy Hathaway
I'm not sure, but. Well, you know she only married Doug for his money. Yes, I think she wants to get rid of Doug. I think she wants me to help.
Bill Wagon
Her get rid of him. How?
Ferdy Hathaway
How? Kill him.
Bill Wagon
Oh, no.
Ferdy Hathaway
You don't know Shirley like I do. Yeah, Laura, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what she wants.
Bill Wagon
Well, why are you telling me this?
Ferdy Hathaway
Because I think Shirley's gonna try to go through with it with or without my help. So I've got to warn Doug.
Bill Wagon
Well, I still don't see he's not.
Ferdy Hathaway
Going to want to believe me. Especially because she's probably filled him full of lies. But I. I may be able to convince him. I've got to. Maybe if I tell him some of the things she said about him.
Bill Wagon
What things?
Ferdy Hathaway
Oh, it's beside the point. The point is she's gonna be afraid I may convince him. So she's gonna try to shut me up.
Bill Wagon
How?
Ferdy Hathaway
I told you about last night.
Pam North
Yes.
Ferdy Hathaway
Well, she's already turned that around to make it look like I attacked her. Oh, yeah, and that she's poured it on Hetty to Doug. That's why I wanted to get to you first. I wanted you to hear this story from me, the way it really happened.
Pam North
I see.
Ferdy Hathaway
Because you've got to believe me, Laura. I can't let her break us up. And she's gonna try. I know she is. If she can't shut me up one way, she'll try another. There's nothing she won't stop at to get what she wants. But it's not going to work. At least I hope it's not.
Jerry North
Hello?
Narrator
Hello, Jerry. This Bill wagon.
Jerry North
Oh, yes, Bill. How are you?
Narrator
Okay. Say, Jerry, what can you tell me about Freddy Hathaway?
Jerry North
Hathaway? I'm considering publishing a book he wrote. Why? Does he want to go to your office and do research on how the homicide squad works?
Narrator
No, no, it's the other way around.
Jerry North
What do you mean?
Narrator
We gotta see him. And it's not research. This is the real thing.
Jerry North
You mean he killed somebody?
Narrator
No, that's the other way around, too. Somebody kill him.
Pam North
Well, Jerry, I'm all ready. Let's go.
Jerry North
Pam, it hasn't been two minutes since I hung up the phone and you asked me to tell Bill we couldn't possibly get over to see him for at least an hour.
Pam North
Oh, we're not going to see Bill.
Jerry North
We're not?
Pam North
No.
Jerry North
But, darling, he wants to talk to us. I told him about the incident last night, and he wants all the details.
Pam North
Oh, we'll tell him later.
Jerry North
All right, dear. But if we're not going to see Bill right now, where are we going?
Pam North
To see Laura, of course.
Jerry North
Oh, yes, of course, Laura. That's a good idea.
Pam North
I thought you'd agree, darling.
Jerry North
There's just one thing, though.
Pam North
Oh, what's that, dear?
Jerry North
Who in blazes is Laura?
Pam North
Oh, you know, Jerry.
Jerry North
I do?
Pam North
Laura Arnold, Freddy Hathaway's girlfriend. Don't you remember? He mentioned her last night. He was afraid that she might hear about Shirley's accusation and might believe it.
Jerry North
Oh, that's right.
Pam North
And if she did believe it, it might make her angry.
Jerry North
You would think it might have made her angry enough to commit murder?
Pam North
Well, you never know. At least it's worth checking up on. As long as Bill wants us to give him information, maybe we can take him more than he counted on.
Bill Wagon
Yes?
Pam North
Are you Laura Arnold?
Bill Wagon
Yes.
Pam North
Well, I'm Pamela north and this is my husband, Jerry North.
Bill Wagon
Oh, the publisher. I've heard Freddie mention you. What do you want with me?
Pam North
We'd like to talk to you if we may.
Bill Wagon
Well, I'm. I'm pretty busy right now.
Jerry North
We'll only take a few minutes.
Bill Wagon
Well, all right. Come in. What's it about?
Jerry North
Ferdie.
Bill Wagon
What about him?
Jerry North
I'm afraid you're in for a bad shock, Ms. Arnold.
Bill Wagon
He's been murdered. Is that what you're trying to tell me?
Jerry North
Why do you ask that?
Bill Wagon
He said Shirley wouldn't stop at anything so. Well, naturally I've been afraid.
Jerry North
When did he tell you that?
Bill Wagon
Today at lunch.
Pam North
And that's the last you saw of him?
Bill Wagon
Yes. I came home right afterward about one. I've been here ever since.
Jerry North
Well, that's funny. When we asked if you were in just before we came up, the desk clerk said you got in only about 20 minutes ago.
Bill Wagon
Well, I. Mr. North, I'm frightened. I don't know what to do.
Pam North
Maybe we can help you if you tell us the truth.
Bill Wagon
Yes, here's the truth. I did have lunch with Ferdie. He told me about Shirley. Then we went back to his place and talked a while and I left. But about an hour later I realized I'd left my gloves up there. So I went back. And there he was on the floor, dead. I'll never forget how he looked. I don't want to think about it.
Jerry North
You'd better sit down, Ms. Arnold. There are a couple of things I'd still like to ask you. Because if we're going to help you, we'll have to know what we're doing. She says she was afraid you'd suspect her, Bill. That's why she wouldn't give a name when she phoned that she discovered the murder. And why she ran out before you got there.
Narrator
Uh huh. Well, I'll get around to her later. After I've had a talk with Hathaway's brother and the brother's wife.
Pam North
Find out if they own a yellow convertible, Bill.
Jerry North
Yes, that's right. Ms. Arnold says that a yellow convertible pulled away from in front of Ferdinand Place just as she arrived the second time.
Narrator
Did she Know the make?
Jerry North
No. She said she never saw one like it. It was very long and low and.
Pam North
It had a funny shaped back, kind of like. Well, the way she described it, it must look something like. Well, like the back of that car parked right in front of us.
Jerry North
Hey, Pam, that is, the car fits.
Narrator
A description to a T. And it's parked right in front of Douglas Hathaway's apartment. Let's go in and see what he has to say.
Doug Hathaway
I know you have your job to do, Lieutenant, but is it necessary to question me now? After all, it's quite a shock hearing my brother's been murdered.
Narrator
Well, suppose we question your wife. And from what I hear about last night, I don't imagine his death should make her too unhappy.
Shirley Hathaway
I didn't kill him, if that's what you're implying.
Narrator
I'm not implying anything. I just want to ask you some questions.
Shirley Hathaway
I suppose you want to know where I was. Well, I was right here. I've been home all day long.
Pam North
Was your husband with you?
Shirley Hathaway
No, he was at the office, Mrs. Norton.
Pam North
Then nobody was with you here. Nobody saw you.
Shirley Hathaway
The servants did. Part of the time anyway.
Pam North
And part of the time not.
Shirley Hathaway
Doug, are you going to let them seduce.
Doug Hathaway
No. Look, Lieutenant, I can't take this now. I don't feel up to questions and I certainly don't intend to sit by while you badger Shirley.
Narrator
Well, let's clear up the matter of the car at least.
Doug Hathaway
What about the car?
Narrator
Did you drive it to work this morning?
Doug Hathaway
Couldn't. It's brand new. Wasn't delivered until noon.
Narrator
Then you didn't have it with you at the office?
Doug Hathaway
I just told you.
Narrator
All right, all right, you didn't have it. And you, Mrs. Hathaway, you didn't go out at all.
Shirley Hathaway
How many times do I have to tell you?
Narrator
Well, then who did have the car?
Shirley Hathaway
Nobody. The salesman delivered it, left it out front and it's been there all afternoon.
Narrator
Well, if you want to get by with a story like that, you should get a car that's not quite so distinctive.
Shirley Hathaway
What do you mean?
Narrator
Tell her, Jerry.
Jerry North
Well, Mrs. Hathaway, it so happens your car was seen driving away from your brother in law's right after the murder. And with a custom job like that, there can be no mistake.
Shirley Hathaway
Well, I. There is a. I don't.
Doug Hathaway
All right, Lieutenant, I had the car.
Narrator
Oh, you did? Hathaway?
Doug Hathaway
Yes, I. I came home from the office early and picked it up. Went to see Ferdy, but I didn't kill him.
Narrator
Why'd you go there?
Doug Hathaway
I wanted to talk to him, but there was a man with him. What I had to say was private. Family matter. Didn't care to discuss it in front of a stranger, so I left.
Narrator
Who was the stranger?
Doug Hathaway
Ferdy didn't introduce us. Only there a minute. What did he look like? Tall, blonde, well dressed.
Narrator
You'd know him if you saw him again.
Doug Hathaway
Yes, but. Now, that's enough questions.
Narrator
Not quite. I. I said that's enough. Now, look, Mr. Hathaway, I'm just trying to find out what. Say, where are you going?
Doug Hathaway
Call my lawyer and see if I have to put up with this. Don't answer anything until I come back. Shirley.
Shirley Hathaway
When you know Doug better, Lieutenant, you'll know better than to try to cross him.
Pam North
What was that?
Shirley Hathaway
There must be someone in there with Doug. They're fighting.
Jerry North
It's all the shots. Come on, Bill. There's Hathaway on the floor.
Doug Hathaway
He got away. Window to the terrace.
Narrator
I'll go see what I can find. Jerry, and you stay with Hathaway and see if he's all right.
Jerry North
Right.
Shirley Hathaway
Doug. Oh, Doug. What happened?
Doug Hathaway
He was hiding in here. A fellow I saw at Ferdy's tried to slug me with a blackjack. But I heard him and turned. Just grazed the side of my head.
Jerry North
Yes, you've got a gash there.
Doug Hathaway
I put up a fight. He broke away, ran for the window. I fired at him. Guess I missed. Blow had me kind of woozy.
Jerry North
You're sure it's the same man you saw at Ferdy's?
Doug Hathaway
Positive.
Narrator
Well, I took a quick look outside. No sign of anyone now. Well, he could have crossed the terrace to another apartment or gone down the fire escape and ducked in below.
Pam North
But then he's still in the building.
Narrator
He'll be out of it before we can do anything about it, Pam.
Doug Hathaway
Then what do we do?
Narrator
Well, first of all, Hathaway, you stop being coy and give us a detailed description of this character. Or do you still want to call your lawyer?
Doug Hathaway
No, Lieutenant, you win. I'll tell you whatever I can.
Pam North
There's your coffee. Jerry. Jerry. Jerry North.
Jerry North
What? Pam?
Pam North
Your coffee. I know you don't like it cold.
Jerry North
Oh, thanks.
Pam North
Where were you?
Jerry North
What?
Pam North
Just now, in your thoughts. You were miles away.
Jerry North
I was thinking about the Hathaway case. It's been three days now and no sign of the mysterious stranger.
Pam North
Well, maybe they'll never find him. He had time to get far away.
Jerry North
But I don't think he did. That's what I've been thinking about.
Pam North
You think you know where he is?
Jerry North
Maybe. Anyway, I'll bet there's one place they haven't tried yet.
Pam North
Where's that?
Jerry North
The morgue.
Pam North
The morgue?
Jerry North
And somehow I have an idea it might yield results.
Narrator
Well, I have to admit that was a pretty good idea of yours, Jerry.
Jerry North
I don't know, Bill. Wait till we see if Hathaway identifies the body. Yeah. I could be wrong, but this seemed like the logical bet.
Narrator
Well, here's where we find out. Here's Hathaway.
Doug Hathaway
Morning, gentlemen. Good morning.
Narrator
Oh, good morning.
Doug Hathaway
Am I late?
Narrator
Oh, right on the nose, Hathaway. Well, should we go in and get it over with?
Doug Hathaway
Yes, let's.
Narrator
All right. Right through here.
Doug Hathaway
You really think it's the right man, eh, Lieutenant?
Narrator
Well, that's for you to say, Hathaway. He seems to fit the description you gave us. Well, here he is. Well, Hathaway.
Doug Hathaway
That's the man.
Narrator
Are you sure?
Doug Hathaway
Yes, Lieutenant, I'm sure.
Narrator
Well, Jerry, seems you were right.
Jerry North
Mm.
Narrator
You know, Hathaway, this is very interesting. Now, you say you saw this man at your brother's the day your brother was killed.
Doug Hathaway
That's right.
Narrator
Your brother was killed on Tuesday. But it so happens this fella died on Monday.
Jerry North
You see, Pam, I thought that if Hathaway was lying, he'd jump at the chance to strengthen the story. So I. I suggested that Bill show him a corpse that approximated the description he gave us.
Pam North
Yes. After all, a corpse couldn't talk back.
Jerry North
Right. And now that we've eliminated the mysterious stranger, we can concentrate on the real suspects. And Bill thinks he can wrap it up. That's why he asked us down here today.
Narrator
Come in. Now, Pam and Jerry.
Jerry North
How's it going, Bill?
Narrator
We've just started.
Shirley Hathaway
I don't see why you had to bring them in, Lieutenant.
Narrator
Because, Mrs. Hathaway, they were present when you had your unpleasantness with your brother in law.
Shirley Hathaway
All right, we had an unpleasant, sir, but it wouldn't make me kill him.
Jerry North
That depends on the reason for the scene, Mrs. Hathaway.
Shirley Hathaway
I told you the reason. He tried to make love to me.
Jerry North
I can suggest another. Yes, Jerry, suppose Mrs. Hathaway wanted to get rid of her husband.
Shirley Hathaway
What do you mean?
Jerry North
He has a lot of money, Mrs. Hathaway. Maybe that's what you married him for. Then you tried to get Ferdy to help you kill him. And when he received.
Shirley Hathaway
You're lying. You're lying.
Narrator
That's enough, Mrs. Hathaway.
Pam North
Now stop it.
Jerry North
Stop it.
Pam North
Ms. Hathaway.
Shirley Hathaway
Where his eyes out?
Jerry North
I believe you would.
Shirley Hathaway
Doug, help me. You know he was lying.
Doug Hathaway
Of course he was. So calm down, will you?
Shirley Hathaway
You don't believe him, Doug.
Doug Hathaway
I told you I don't. But this is no way to answer him.
Shirley Hathaway
Yeah. Yes, you're right. But he made me so mad.
Jerry North
I see. I did. You have a low boiling point, Mrs. Hathaway.
Doug Hathaway
You couldn't expect her to like what you were saying.
Adam Graham
North.
Jerry North
I didn't.
Doug Hathaway
You just said it to upset her.
Jerry North
I just said it because I wanted to see if it were true.
Doug Hathaway
What on earth gives you the idea.
Jerry North
That it might be things that Laura Arnold told us?
Doug Hathaway
So that's it. Laura wouldn't you know?
Jerry North
Why do you say that?
Doug Hathaway
Can't you see she's behind this whole thing? It all ties up now. I'll bet she's the one who claimed to have seen my car at Ferdy's too, wouldn't she?
Jerry North
What if she is?
Doug Hathaway
Lieutenant, you said I've been trying to shield Shirley. I have.
Shirley Hathaway
Mm.
Doug Hathaway
When you said my car was seen at Ferdy's, I could see Shirley was upset. She didn't know what to say. So I stepped in and said I'd been to Ferdy's.
Narrator
And you hadn't?
Doug Hathaway
No. But I thought Shirley might have. But now that I know she wasn't. At least not at the time of the murder.
Narrator
How do you know that?
Doug Hathaway
Because now I know when the murder happened. It's been in the paper.
Narrator
Well?
Doug Hathaway
Well, I did have the car at that time, but I was nowhere near Ferdy's. So if Laura says she saw me there, she's lying.
Narrator
It seems to come down to your word against hers. Well, I've sent for her too. So let's see what happens when she gets here.
Pam North
Oh, I don't think we'll have to wait for that, Bill. I know which one to believe.
Narrator
You do? Pen?
Pam North
Yes, Laura. Mr. Hathaway's still lying. So it looks like he's the murderer.
Doug Hathaway
Don't be ridiculous. Laura says she saw my car at Ferdy's. That means she had to be there herself.
Pam North
That's just it, Miss. Ha.
Doug Hathaway
So naturally she's going to. L try to play somebody else there too.
Pam North
She couldn't have been lying.
Doug Hathaway
Why not?
Pam North
You told us your car was brand new. It had been delivered just a short time before the murder.
Doug Hathaway
That's right.
Pam North
Well, then how could Laura have described it? Unless she really did see it at Ferdy's?
Shirley Hathaway
Jerry, get him.
Jerry North
I've got him. All right, Hathaway, sit down. Looks like you've told one lie too many. Oh, it's A beautiful day, isn't it, dear?
Pam North
Yes. Poor Shirley.
Jerry North
How do we come to Shirley out.
Pam North
Of a clear blue sky? The sky's clear. And you just mentioned the weather. So you see, there is a logical connection.
Jerry North
You win, dear. But why do you say poor Shirley?
Pam North
Well, it's quite obvious that she just married Doug Hathaway for his money. And now that he's caught for murder, they've broken him down about how he made his money.
Jerry North
His whole crooked house will come tumbling down.
Pam North
That's right, Jerry. And all his money is tied up.
Jerry North
And so poor Shirley gets none.
Pam North
You see what I mean, dear? Poor Shirley.
Jerry North
But somehow it doesn't break my heart. She knew Doug was a crook. Ferdie knew it, too. That's why Doug killed him, to shut him up. He claims Ferdy was always a tattletale as a kid. Hey, Pam, why are you stopping?
Pam North
Oh, I just want to look in this window. Look at that car, Jerry. Isn't it beautiful? It's sort of like the Hathaways car. Oh, it must be wonderful to be able to afford a car like that.
Jerry North
Even if you could, where would you ever find a parking space for it? In Manhattan?
Pam North
Well, if you didn't live in Manhattan.
Jerry North
But we do live in Manhattan, and we can't afford the car anyway.
Pam North
I know, Jerry. I'm just thinking. Don't you ever like to think of what it would be like to have a car like that?
Jerry North
I don't let myself.
Pam North
How do you prevent yourself?
Jerry North
Easy. I just walk over to the curb. Like so.
Pam North
Yes. And then.
Jerry North
Then I just shout. Like so.
Doug Hathaway
Hey, taxi.
Ferdy Hathaway
The adventures of Mr. And Mrs. North.
Jerry North

Adam Graham
Welcome back. Well, sometime between January 1951 and February 1952, the melodrama in this series got amped up to the next level, giving it practically a soap opera tone. In some ways more extreme than Mr. Chameleon, although it's a very different style. However, I think that there were still some very good moments by the North. Jerry's Morg ruse was pretty good, though. This is one case where cleverness feels a bit wasted when the murderer is an idiot. I mean, the guy used a very distinctive car. He just got to go and visit his brother with murder on his mind and was tricked into committing the murder by his lying wife. And he stumbled into Jerry's morgue trap and then told a ridiculous lie that Pam caught that proved him guilty. But I think this is a story where the Norths, just being the Norse, really do save this one. Alright, well, listener comments and feedback and we have a couple of comments on YouTube. Doris writes, I love this couple. They are so cute. And another listener shares listening on a windy night in the UK on February 19th. Well, thank you so much. Laura Arnold
You can tell me this. Why did all those things happen late at night when those poor old folks wouldn't have any reason to be up and around when there wasn't anybody around who could help them until it was too late?
Doug Hathaway
Well, so far as that's concerned, why.
Laura Arnold
Sure, sure, folks have got to get up at night sometime for one reason or another. But they all had their own private and if they want anything from downstairs, like something to read or some hot milk, something like that, why, all they have to do is ring the push button in their room and my wife gets it for them. We do that all the time.
Narrator
Where is your wife, by the way?
Laura Arnold
Martha? Why, she's right here, Frank. Who's this you're blabbing off your mouth too? Why Martha, this is Mr. Johnny Dollar, insurance investigator.
Shirley Hathaway
Investigator, huh? Well, you can march yourself right out of here.
Doug Hathaway
Hold on just a minute, Mrs. Scott.
Laura Arnold
Just a minute nothing.
Shirley Hathaway
You get out of here and leave.
Ferdy Hathaway
Us alone, Mrs. Skinner.
Laura Arnold
If you don't, I'll throw you out. If you don't think I'm young and strong enough, then I'll show you strong.
Narrator
Enough to throw a little old lady out of a window or shove a.
Doug Hathaway
Couple of people downstairs.

In this captivating episode of Mr. and Mrs. North, titled "The Premature Corpse," listeners are transported to a suspense-filled evening in New York where secrets, lies, and deceit intertwine, leading to a gripping mystery. Hosted by Adam Graham, the episode delves deep into the complex relationships and hidden motives of the Hathaway family, ultimately revealing the dark truths behind a seemingly straightforward murder case.
The story unfolds in the plush apartment of Ferdy Hathaway on a serene New York night. Shirley Hathaway arrives unexpectedly, creating immediate tension with Ferdy, Doug Hathaway's brother. Shirley confronts Ferdy with accusations of manipulating Doug for his wealth, igniting a heated argument that sets the stage for the ensuing mystery.
As the tension peaks, Doug Hathaway arrives, only to be confronted with Shirley's dramatic claims and physical altercation with Ferdy. The situation escalates when Ferdy accuses Shirley of attempting to manipulate him into aiding in Doug's downfall. Amidst the chaos, a mysterious phone call from Laura Arnold hints at foul play, leading Pam and Jerry North to investigate.
The investigation takes a pivotal turn when Doug Hathaway reveals a potential alibi involving a distinctive yellow convertible. However, inconsistencies in Doug's account and conflicting testimonies cast doubt on his innocence. The Norths employ a clever strategy by introducing a corpse to test Doug's honesty, ultimately unmasking him as the true culprit behind Ferdy Hathaway's murder.
Shirley Hathaway (Alice Frost): Ferdy's wife, whose aggressive demeanor and confrontations reveal deep-seated resentments and hidden agendas.
Jerry North (Joseph Curtin): A perceptive publisher who, alongside his wife Pam, unravels the complex web of deceit within the Hathaway family.
Pam North (Alice Frost): Jerry's astute partner, instrumental in piecing together the puzzle and exposing the truth.
Ferdy Hathaway (Larry Thor): Doug's brother, whose murder becomes the central mystery of the episode.
Doug Hathaway (Jack Webb): Ferdy's secretive brother, whose dubious alibi and interactions with Shirley raise suspicions.
Laura Arnold (Guest Character): An insurance investigator whose involvement complicates the investigation.

Introduction of the Corpse Ruse:
Final Revelation:
After the dramatized narrative concludes, Adam Graham provides a thoughtful analysis of the episode's dynamics and storytelling techniques:
Character Development: Graham highlights the transformation of the "Mr. and Mrs. North" series during the early 1950s, noting a shift towards more melodramatic and soap opera-like elements. He appreciates the complexity added to the characters, especially the clever maneuvers employed by Jerry North.
Plot Mechanics: The host commends the use of the morgue ruse, where Jerry North introduces a corpse to test Doug Hathaway's credibility. However, Graham criticizes the plot for relying on the perpetrator's incompetence, arguing that Ferdy Hathaway's use of a distinctive car made him an easy target for such a ploy.
Thematic Elements: Graham points out the themes of greed, manipulation, and familial betrayal that permeate the episode. He emphasizes how Shirley's antagonism towards Ferdy and Doug's questionable actions set the stage for the ultimate revelation of Doug as the murderer.
Listener Engagement: Reflecting on audience feedback, Graham shares positive comments from listeners who adore the dynamic between Mr. and Mrs. North and appreciate the immersive storytelling that keeps them hooked.
