A father wants to spend time with his 2-year-old. But he can’t. Not because he does not have the time or is distracted — but because the content on his phone is so dopamine-rich that his own child, by comparison, just feels… dull.

This is one of the most raw conversations I’ve had on this podcast. And it is not about banning screens. Or putting a screen time timer. It’s a far more uncomfortable reckoning about what compulsive scrolling is actually doing to us.

Aditi Mandal is the founder of Take Back Your Time. She works with individuals, parents, and professionals from India to break the cycle of compulsive scrolling — not by banning devices, but by understanding why we really reach for them.

When people tell her about their tech problems, Aditi sees screen addiction fall into three distinct buckets:

Productivity — The erosion of deep focus. Senior managers zoning out of meetings, scrolling mid-conversation, falling behind on the work that actually matters — not because they’re lazy, but because sustained attention now feels genuinely hard.

Presence — “I am physically present, but mentally somewhere else.” This is a statement she often hears from participants who are trying to course-correct their screen time addictions. “When you’re addicted to content consumption, everything else will feel boring,” she explains, “because the dopamine hit is so high.”

Emotional regulation — This one hit hardest. Bored? Scroll. Anxious? Scroll. Angry? Scroll. “Instead of taking action to deal with an emotion, you just scroll. And so the intolerance for any sort of discomfort becomes so high that now you don’t know what to do with your emotions.”

But the deepest cost, Aditi says, isn’t attention. It’s identity.

What you aspire to, what you believe in, how you see the world — all quietly reshaped by what an algorithm decided to serve you today. Opinions replace perspectives. Black and white replace nuance.

We also talked about Jonathan Haidt’s sharp observation: a parent won’t let their child walk to a park alone because a stranger might approach — but will hand them a phone, which is essentially allowing a hundred strangers into their bedroom.

And we ended somewhere I keep returning to: the solution isn’t control. It’s connection.
